ACROSS the North East, members of various community groups are working hard to bring the community’s attention to the benefits of renewable energy. These include those involved in the North East’s Community Energy Network, whose member groups include Totally Renewable Yackandandah, Wangaratta Sustainability Network and many more. Cambell Klose, convenor of community energy retailer Indigo Power, said “local energy groups are transforming our towns and regions by promoting renewable energy”, and said helping preserve the environment is a shared responsibility. “We know human activity is changing the climate,” Cambell said. “I think that everybody has a responsibility to do what they can to ensure future generations can enjoy and have access to some of the same stunning nature we have now. “I want my kids to be able to visit the Great Barrier Reef; I want to be able to continue to ski at our ski resorts; I want our region to still farm some of the best produce in the country. “Climate change threatens that. “I think that communities can offer a unique solu-

tion to climate change by transitioning to clean energy.” Cambell said renewable energy is not only a low carbon alternative that helps address climate change, but it also quite literally gives power back to communities. “With renewable energy, we are no longer just at the receiving end of energy. “We can generate our own energy and share it between each other. “It allows communities to own their energy generation and re-invest back into our local region.” “The Community Energy Network brings together local community energy groups and allows us to work together. “Our region has the highest concentration of community energy groups anywhere in the country.” Members of the Wangaratta Sustainability Network (WSN), including Rowan O’Hagan, Rob Carolane and Tony Lane, said the group is working continuously to raise awareness of renewable energy opportunities, particularly those with a community benefit.

Payment times biggest cause of disputes for small business NEW research has found that small businesses in Australia are paying more than $130,000 to resolve a dispute through formal pathways; double the cost of a decade ago. Releasing the results of the Access to Justice Inquiry (Phase I) research in December, the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman, Kate Carnell said payment times and terms remain the biggest cause of disputes. “We surveyed 1600 small businesses across Australia and found time and cost are the most significant factors when determining how far to pursue resolution of a dispute,” Ms Carnell said. “Our research shows 22 per cent of small businesses surveyed had been involved in a serious dispute in the last five years. “Nine out of 10 were business-to-business disputes and one in 20 were business-to-government. “Three out of five sought legal advice from a lawyer. “At this point, the small business owner has to decide whether to pursue the dispute, as the expected costs of further
action most often outweigh the potential gain. “Half of those surveyed considered the amount of time and effort required was unreasonable. “We found one third of disputes are not escalated through a formal process; instead the small business owner sought to resolve it by speaking with the other party and coming to an agreement. “The cost of disputes to small businesses is far reaching. “There can be significant financial loss; existing business relationships become strained; it is a time-consuming process and reputations can be seriously damaged. “If the direct approach has failed, we recommend small businesses consult your state Small Business Commissioner or our office.” The release of this report signalled the beginning of Phase 2 of the Access to Justice Inquiry, which will look at the court systems, explore emerging ideas for streamlining processes and make recommendations to improve access to justice for small business owners.
with Helen van Riet AUSTRALIAN PLANTS SOCIETY (VIC) ◆ VIBRANT: Corymbia Ficifolia “Wildfire”.
The Red-flowering Gum
IN 1995 a new genus “Corymbia” came into being. One hundred and thirteen species were transferred from the Eucalyptus genus to Corymbia. Eucalyptus ficifolia became Corymbia ficifolia. - from Greek korumbos - a cluster and Latin corymbia – floral clusters. Ficifolia is derived from Latin ficus – a fig, and folia – leaves. The leaves resemble native fig leaves. Eucalypts have flowers scattered throughout the foliage, whereas Corymbias bear clusters of flowers which branch from the stem at different levels but terminate at about the same level. Flowers are actually dense clusters of stamens. During development, the bud cap is tightly closed. This is a modified petal and falls off as the flower opens. C. ficifolia flower prolifically in sum-
mer in many shades of red, orange, pink and white. C. ficifolia can be tricky to grow true-to-type from seed. Despite the colour of the flowers of a parent plant, the offspring may turn out to be white, orange, pink, red or any shade in between. To ensure a good form and reliable flower colour, it is advisable to purchase named varieties. Plant breeding has resulted in wonderfully spectacular hybrids and cultivars with smaller, compact growth. “Summer Red” and “Summer Beauty” are hybrid examples. Grafted trees are also readily available. These are grafted onto rootstocks which are adaptable to a wider range of soil types. Some suggested trees are “Summer Beauty”. “Apricot Dawn”, “Orange Splendour’ “Lollypops”, “Wild-
fire” and “Wild Sunset”. Cultivars and grafted trees develop a dense rounded crown and reach between 3 and 6 metres. Young plants should be staked and receive some extra water through the first summer or two. Regularly remove all shoots from the rootstock [below the graft]. With the taller varieties, lower branches can be pruned for ease of access, and pruning systematically after flowering will keep trees compact and encourage next year’s flowering. Some smaller cultivars are suitable pot plants. Once established, C. ficifolia are drought tolerant. They are a glorious sight on even the hottest of summer days. There is a well-established avenue alongside the Wangaratta Railway Station car park.

FEATURE STORY
Malassezia dermatitis MALASSEZIA is a yeast organism that is a normal part of the microbes that live on the skin of dogs and cats. Sometimes however, this organism can overgrow in some areas of the body and cause skin conditions in dogs and cats. Areas of the body that can commonly become infected with Malassezia are anywhere on the skin but particularly areas such as the feet in between the toes, around the lips and genital areas. Malassezia can be a big component of ear infections. It is not known why this organism becomes pathogenic, however it is more commonly found when the animal has thickened greasy skin. Moisture accumulating in the ears can play a big part in Malassezia Otitis (ear infections), this is often seen in dogs

with Dr A Kelleher, VETERINARIAN that like swimming. Signs of Malassezia are itching, often with thickened blackened skin which is greasy and smelly. Diagnosis of Malassezia is made by looking at the organisms under the microscope or running a fungal culture, there can sometimes be a concurrent bacterial infection. Treatment often involves using topical therapies and antifungal shampoos for skin. Many ear preparations have a combination of antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory preparations to treat mixed infections. If areas can be kept clean and dry, this can certainly help.
◆ SPEAKING OUT: Matthew Charles-Jones from Totally Renewable Yackandandah is passionate about renewable energy.
Energetic communities The group has invited several speakers to Wangaratta to speak about renewable energy, including Tim Goodson from the International Energy Agency and Nicky Ison from Community Energy Australia, and have also collaborated with and advised the Hume Renewable Energy Strategy. WSN will host a Sustainability Expo at Wangaratta Library this March. “Many people are making their own decisions about solar PV (and the industry is well developed and supported by Government programs), and other ways to reduce their carbon footprint, however, enabling those without the resources or households who are renting to participate is also important, which means a whole-of-system approach is needed,” Rowan said. “We cannot go on adding carbon into the atmosphere, this is real and will hurt our human economy and our environment for other plants and animals we share the world with,” Rob added. “Renewable energy is a responsible way to use our economic resources to have affordable energy and less carbon.” Tony said that concern for future generations helps drive his work to encourage renewable energy and protect the environment.
Looking forward to becoming a grandfather later this year, he said that when future generations feel the full force of global warming, they were going to look back at previous generations who “failed to make the right call” on climate change. Among those in Yackandandah helping lead the push for renewable energy is Matthew Charles-Jones, of Totally Renewable Yackandandah (TRY). He said TRY, and groups like them, have “offered a huge impetus” to the reinvention of electricity supply in the North East, “by defining a new narrative on electricity; low carbon, local and affordable. “TRY has witnessed a 20 per cent jump in installation density in our local footprint since 2014 – a 14km radius from the centre of town (Clean Energy Council data). “This trend is also supported by a maturing installation industry, improving technology, falling prices for hardware and government investment.” Matthew said he cares deeply about the environment and the impact the human population is having on the earth, both in terms of polluting emissions and personal consumption. “Humanity is having a dramatic effect on the health of the environment
and this trend is, and will, threaten the viability of our future and the future of the natural world,” he said. Matthew added that moving to renewable energy is “crucial, urgent and incredibly possible – and relatively easy. “It has never been cheaper and more reliable, and it reduces cost, builds local economies and gives back control to local communities.” Matthew said the move towards community and renewable energy in Yackandandah is a group effort. “The progress of Yackandandah is a reflection of courage and commitment by a diverse range of people and partnerships; householders, businesses, community groups (particularly Yackandandah Folk Festival) North East Water, Mondo Power, skilled solar installers and the Victorian Government,” he said. To get in touch with Totally Renewable Yackandandah, see www.totallyrenewableyack.org.au, while the Wangaratta Sustainability Network can be found at www.wangarattasustainability.org; there is also information available at communityenergyretailer.com, and relevant groups can also be found on their individual social media pages.

GONE FISHING
CATCH OF THE WEEK ◆ WANGARATTA children Nic and Chloe Liddell caught these fish using cheese for bait during December in the Ovens river near Cambridge Drive, Wangaratta. The fish were too small to keep, but they were both cod.

◆ PATIENCE NEEDED: The always popular redfin are biting at lake Buffalo, albeit a bit slowly until the weather cools down.
There’s blackwater and then there is black water been concerned that this heat will really switch the Murray cod off in the more wild, natural flowing rivers like the Ovens, King, Buffalo and Kiewa, but it hasn’t. The fishing certainly has slowed down, however, there are still reports of Murray cod coming in from right across the region albeit at a slower rate to what they were a few weeks back. From my own experiences, the fishing has slowed down but is still okay. I have managed to catch a couple of cod most evenings that I have been out, with a couple of fishless trips thrown into the mix.

I have found the cod are showing a bit of apprehension when hitting lures, with the strikes being a little less aggressive and fish reluctant to return for a second go, like they do when they are really active. As the days get shorter and the weather starts to cool down a little I expect the Murray cod to bite well. Just quickly, I have fished both Lake Buffalo and Lake William Hovell in recent weeks with similar results from each lake. A few small redfin on small soft plastics and bladed lures. The redfin fishing has been slow but should improve as water levels drop in both lakes.

LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION
THERE has been concern about the water quality in North East Victorian rivers with many streams looking really dark, almost black. This is common for this time of the year in this region and is often associated with hot weather and wind. Warmer water holds less oxygen, giving it a darker look. Windy weather blows leaves into the water which release tannins making the water look dark. A few cooler days and less wind will help the water to look better. In April the river looks its clearest as it cools. There is black water and there is blackwater. Thankfully we only have black water. Will this heat ever let up? I have

IT is time to start thinking about lunchboxes. And this year we forgive you for thinking this means the actual box! Many of you will have considered a more sustainable way to eat lunch, meaning taking a packed box from home, rather than buying plastic wrapped sandwiches - and possibly even have received a metal ‘bentobox’ as a present. WINE TALK
Chrismont Wines Riesling 2018 WE have come a long way since pub meals came with either vegetables, or chips and salad, but whenever the topic comes up, it seems most people have no trouble nominating which side they’re on. Like choosing between Ford or Holden, there seems to be an allegiance to one or the other that doesn’t often change, regardless of the season. Couples knew immediately what to order for their partner, like knowing which way they have their coffee. While you need to make the decision less often these days as tastes and menus have changed, there’s something quite comforting about the familiar, and knowing you’re going to get exactly what you hunger for. I love to try new wines, but sometimes all I want is a good Riesling, like Chrismont’s recent release. It’s made from fruit harvested from some of the first vines planted by Arnie and Arnaldo
with Anita McPherson Pizzini in Cheshunt in the early 1980’s. It has a pale straw colour and a classically perfumed aroma of honeysuckle and citrus. There is a smooth feel in the mouth, as you let the wine rest while enjoying the long lasting citrus, hint of honeycomb and apple-like fruity flavour, before the refreshingly dry finish. Beautifully balanced; this is an ideal table wine which goes as well with modern menus as it does with more traditional fare, like old-style Australian or even Cantonese dishes. Even conservative types like to go wild once in a while. Available from the cellar door in Cheshunt, or visit www.chrismont.com.au.

This Day in History, 1896 ON January 23, 1896, the temperature during the day varied between 112 and 118 degrees. Conditions were made even more uncomfortable by a strong north wind. Towards evening, storm clouds gathered, and the wind suddenly gusted to hurricane force, wrecking the Presbyterian Church, flattening the Miners’ Recreation Hall, and blowing down stables, haysheds and houses.

TECH & SCIENCE
with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ AGENT OF DISASTER: Trofim Lysenko’s dangerous theories concerning agriculturul practices lead to the worst man-made famines in human history.
Lysenkoism - how to destroy agriculture and starve millions “Science cannot long remain unfettered in a social system which seeks to exercise control over the whole spiritual and intellectual life of a nation. The correctness of a scientific theory can never be adjudged by its readiness to give the answers desired by political leadership.” --Charles A. Leone “Lysenko versus Mendel,” Transactions of the Kansas Academy of Science, 1952 IN 1898, a young peasant couple, living and working on a farm in the then Tsarist autocracy of Russia would give birth to a son. This son would witness a revolution that would overthrow the imperial government and install the Bolsheviks - the Russian Social-Democratic Worker’s Party - into power, with Vladimir Lenin at the helm as the head of government of the new Soviet Russia. This tumultuous period, and the decades preceding it, would ingrain in the boy a deep seated hatred of capitalism, the bourgeoisie, as well as any theories believed to be associated with them. It would also give him the opportunity to rise through the ranks of the Soviet Union to one day become the head of
biology under Joseph Stalin. It was this perfect storm of place and period that would see this boy grow to become the man directly responsible for the death of seven million Russians and, later, at least 30 million Chinese. This boy was born Trofim Denisovich Lysenko, and his tale is a cautionary one, concerning pseudoscience and the meddling of governments with vested interests to force certain conclusions that match ideological goals. Trofim Lysenko vaulted to the top of the Soviet scientific heap with unusual speed. Having been born to humble farmers, he was illiterate until age 13 but nevertheless took advantage of the Russian Revolution and won admission to several agricultural schools,
where he began experimenting with new methods of growing peas during the long, hard Soviet winter, among other projects. Although he ran poorly designed experiments, the research won him praise from a state-run newspaper in 1927. His proletariat background also made him popular within the Communist party, which glorified peasants. Having grown up desperately poor at the turn of the 20th century, Lysenko believed wholeheartedly in the promise of the communist revolution. So when the doctrines of science and the doctrines of communism clashed, he always chose the latter - confident that biology would conform to ideology in the end. Principally, Lysenko, believed that the entire field of genetics was nothing but the propaganda of the capitalist bourgeoisie, and instead subscribed to the wholly debunked Lamarckian theory of evolution which held that species could evolve within a
single generation solely due to the environment - a notion wholly in line with the marxist ideology of the time. Effectively this theory stated that, if forced to, a giraffe would stretch its neck to reach food, and would pass that elongated neck to its direct offspring. His rejection of supposed bourgeois science and commitment to the communist cause won him favour amongst officials and Stalin himself. This favour led him to become the head of biology, and it was from this position that his disastrous plan would unfold. Lysenko began to “educate” Soviet crops to sprout at different times of the year by soaking them in freezing water, among other practices. He then claimed that future generations of crops would remember these environmental cues and, even without being treated themselves, would inherit the beneficial traits. According to traditional genetics, this is impossible - it’s akin to cutting the tail off a cat and expecting her to give
birth to tailless kittens. Lysenko, undeterred, was soon bragging about growing orange trees in Siberia. He also promised to boost crop yields nationwide and convert the empty Russian interior into vast farms. Such claims were exactly what Soviet leaders wanted to hear. In the late 1920s and early 1930s Joseph Stalin - with Lysenko’s backing - had instituted a catastrophic scheme to “modernize” Soviet agriculture, forcing millions of people to join collective, state-run farms. Widespread crop failure and famine resulted. Stalin refused to change course, however, and ordered Lysenko to remedy the disaster with methods based on his radical new ideas. Lysenko forced farmers to plant seeds very close together, for instance, since according to his “law of the life of species,” plants from the same “class” never compete with one another.
He also forbade all use of fertilizers and pesticides. Wheat, rye, potatoes, beets - everything grown according to Lysenko’s methods died or rotted resulting in the death of 7 million people between 1932 and 1933. The Soviet Union’s allies suffered under Lysenkoism, too. Communist China adopted his methods in the late 1950s and endured even bigger famines. Peasants were reduced to eating tree bark and bird droppings and even resorting to cannibalism. Truly, it was a dark period of the 20th century, and we should always be wary of science in the service of ideology. Yet now, thanks to a resurgence of anti-American sentiment due to geopolitical turbulence, ‘Lysenkoism’, and the general denouncement and disdain of the empirical scientific method is seeing a resurgence in Russia and even in certain circles of academia in the west. But more on that in a later article.

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS:
SHOW: Rosehaven NETWORK: ABC TIMESLOT: Wednesday, January 30, 8.55pm
Australian Open (Nine Saturday and Sunday evenings) The grand ďŹ nals are always watchable and often memorable like all great sporting tournament ďŹ nales. Would I Lie To You? (ABC, Wednesday, 9.30pm) Rob Brydon, Lee Mack and David Mitchell shine in this brand new series where the jokes are fast and everyone is a target.
with Shane Douthie WHILE the Australian Open tennis is dominating the small screen at home at present it’s good to look forward to the return of a new favourite once the tennis is finished. One of Australia’s most original and charming comedies Rosehaven returns on January 30 and it can’t come quick enough. Apart from sport there is
little to watch on the commercial stations these days if you’re not into reality tv, inconsequential 20-20 cricket or that stale, self-absorbed cooking show on Prime. Rosehaven was developed by two disarmingly subtle and intelligent comedians, Celia Pacquola and Luke McGregor, who both performed at Brown Brothers Grapes of Mirth last year, and
Escape From The City (ABC, Thursday, 8pm) An Aussie version of the popular British series Escape To The Country; worth a second look and try to ignore the “tight budgets.
â—† DYNAMIC DUO: Celia Pacquola and Luke McGregor return in the third series of Rosehaven on January 30.
they also star as the two lead characters Emma Dawes and Daniel McCallum respectively. The storyline follows Daniel, who returned to his hometown in Tasmania, fictional ‘Rosehaven’, to help
his formidable mother Barbara run the family real estate business. Emma turns up out of the blue on the run from her marriage and the pair join forces as the out of place heroes trying to assimilate with the
“colourful and quirky locals. These include regulars Kris McQuade as Barbara McCallum, Katie Robertson as Grace, David Quirk as Damien and Kim Knuckey as Greg. And they all return for
this third series. If you haven’t caught this little gem yet or you’ve been hooked on Netflix, give yourself a break and enjoy some great Australian family viewing that will bring a smile to your face.
