BY the time October rolls around, many of us have carried out our spring cleaning and started on the projects we’ve been waiting all winter to do (and hopefully managed to avoid being attacked by daddy Magpies looking after their babies). For others, like Judy Steer and Read and Steve North, October signals an event they’ve been looking forward to all year - the Aussie Backyard Bird Count. Running annually since 2014, the Aussie Backyard Bird Count is part of BirdLife Australia’s National Bird Week and is the largest citizen science event in Australia. BirdLife Australia is the nation’s largest bird conservation organisation and Bird Week itself has been running for more than 100 years, making it one of Australia’s longest running community conservation events. With the summer bushfires and COVID-19 pandemic challenges, this year’s event is not only an opportunity to get in tune with nature and be part of a national effort to track how everyday Australian birds are faring, but also take the time out to de-stress. With more than 88,000 people participating in the event last year and counting almost 3.4 million birds, BirdLife Australia is expecting the 2020 count to be even bigger. For Wangaratta resident, Judy Steer, her interest in birds began long before she was given a subscription to Australian BirdLife magazine in 2014 and participated in her first Aussie Backyard Count the same year. “My interest in birds was encouraged by my father who taught me and my brothers how to identify birds, their calls and nests on our farm in the Mallee,” Judy said. “I have participated each year and find the phone app simple to use. “I enjoy the 20 minutes, usually in the morning, listening, watching and identifying the birds in our garden and nearby. Judy, and husband Lindsay, take great pride in their garden and have a variety of bird-attracting shrubs. “It is common for us to have four types of honeyeaters enjoying the nectar,” Judy said. “There are also house Sparrows and a family of Magpies who visit us daily along with Yellow, Eastern and Crimson Rosellas, King Parrots and smaller insect-feeding Wrens, Silver Eyes and Thornbills.

Gastrointestinal stasis GASTROINTESTINAL stasis (GI stasis) is a relatively common condition that rabbits can develop. As the name suggests, in this condition a rabbit’s digestive system slows down or stops completely. This can make the rabbit very sick and can easily be fatal. When the digestive tract stops moving, bad bacteria is able to proliferate and produce gas which builds up in the intestines and caecum (an organ similar to the human appendix). This gas is incredibly painful and further deters the rabbit from eating and drinking. How to know if your rabbit has this condition: rabbits will stop eating and subsequently have smaller than normal to no faeces as ingesta fails to move through. They will begin to hunch over as the belly becomes swollen and painful. They then become lethargic as they become sicker. There are a number of causes that can lead to GI stasis in rabbits. Low fibre and high starch diets have a lack of bulky material moving through the gut which fails to stimulate the gut to contract and move material through it. Pain from things such as dental disease or urinary tract infections and stress are other common causes. Rabbits can become stressed from simple things like change in location, guests visiting the house or more severe things like loss of a companion which interferes with eating and can cause stasis.

with Felix DeNatris, Wangaratta Veterinary Clinic Especially for rabbits confined to hutches, lack of exercise is a major cause of GI stasis. Blockages of the gut with hair from grooming can also lead to stasis. If you think your pet rabbit has GI stasis, contact your vet. There are various treatments that your vet may administer or prescribe including, gastric motility drugs that will help stimulate movement of the digestive tract, IV fluids to keep the animal hydrated and help soften ingesta, pain medication due to the known discomfort of the condition, antibiotics to help stop the over growth of harmful bacteria and syringe feeding a high fibre diet. There are several things you can do to prevent GI stasis from occurring in your rabbit. First and maybe most importantly is to feed your rabbit a hay based diet (high fibre). This diet also helps to wear teeth and is good to prevent painful dental disease. Regular vet visits can help catch and treat diseases early. Evaluate your rabbits living conditions and make sure there is adequate room to exercise. Keep stress to a minimum. Wild life and other pets should be avoided, changes made slowly if possible.

Birdwatching for beginners BIRDWATCHING is a great excuse to get out into the great outdoors. Wherever you go, you will see birds. One of the great aspects of birding is that different species of birds live in different areas and habitats, so it is not difficult to see a whole variety of different birds. When you’re starting out, it’s best to become familiar with the birds that live in your garden, the local park, on walking routes and at holiday spots. In this way you will soon become aware of the range of common species associated with each site, seasonal changes through the year, the breeding residents, regular migrants and occasional visitors. With practice, you will begin to recognise different species, and eventually you will notice that each has its own way of life. About 800 different species of birds have been recorded in Australia. Some are unmistakable, but others are a little more difficult to identify. Luckily, most of the hard work of identification has already been done and there are a number of available field guide books. As you gain experience, you will

discover that birdwatching is not just about watching birds at all - it is also about listening to them. By listening out for bird calls you will increase your awareness of the different birds that are active in the area, as some birds are often easy to hear but difficult to see. Birdwatching does not have to be an expensive hobby. Usually the most valuable item of birding equipment is a pair of binoculars. Although they may not be absolutely necessary at the start, they are useful because they make it easier to see the birds you are looking at, which, in turn, helps you to identify them. The only other equipment you will need to get started is a notebook and pencil for compiling lists, making notes and drawing rough sketches to aid identification. Because most birding takes place outdoors, you should be suitably dressed for weather changes. Subdued clothing is recommended, as brightly coloured clothes (‘bird-scaring clothes’) make it difficult to approach some birds. Hats, sunscreen and good walking shoes are all appropriate birding

fashion accessories. There are many birding clubs throughout Australia that cater for all levels of experience in birdwatching, and they all welcome new members. BirdLife Australia is Australia’s oldest and largest national bird research and conservation organisation. BirdLife’s regional branches and affiliated groups are run by volunteers, and provide many services to birders. They publish newsletters and hold regular meetings, as well as conducting outings to good birding sites. Often they run projects to discover more about the birds in their area. Most importantly, they provide opportunities for anybody with an interest in birds to meet others in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Be warned: at first glance, birdwatching may seem like an occasional or casual hobby, occupying an otherwise dreary hour or simply providing an excuse for some healthy outdoor exercise. However, its infinite, constantly unfolding variety may lure you on a passionate adventure that will transform your life.

Brown Brothers King Valley Prosecco THE news that restrictions were being lifted in regional Victoria seemed to come at just the right time for many of us. While our thoughts go to those still conďŹ ned in metropolitan Melbourne, even the most of patient of us were starting to feel somewhat fatigued and frustrated by not being able to move on. Now with the sun shining and the birds singing we can dare to dream about getting out and about and doing things again without having to have an essential reason to leave our homes. I’m hoping we will all relish and better appreciate those simple joys and pleasures like getting out in the fresh air, catching up with loved ones, and eating, drinking and laughing with our friends. It’s time to smile and that means it’s time to open a bottle of Brown Brothers Prosecco. This delightful sparkling wine is as eager to get out of the bottle as I am to get out of the house. Lively with ďŹ ne bubbles which bolt to the surface creating a pure white froth, it has a subtle, fruity aroma reminiscent of apple and pear.

with Anita McPherson

Those bubbles keep on coming as you enjoy the gentle fruity avour which has a citrus edge. It feels clean, fresh and exuberant in the mouth and would be wonderful to have with some oysters, a bucket of prawns or maybe a sashimi platter - perhaps shared with a few friends around a table at a restaurant or a winery. Happy days are here again.

Available from local outlets or visit www.brownbrothers.com.au.

This Day in History, 1867 MOST of the duelling done on the goldfields was with fists, and occasionally pick handles and shovels, so there was a deal of surprise expressed when a report circulated in Beechworth that a real duel had been arranged, following a falling out between Colonel Probst, the commander of the Beechworth German Rifles, and his adjutant, Captain Ahrens. Rumour had it that a matter of honour was involved a disturbance over a woman at the Freemason Arms Hotel. An appointment was made for a duel with pistols at dawn on this day in 1867. The place chosen was the Rifle Ground near the Beechworth Racecourse. The Colonel arrived in good time for the engagement and sat in a buggy nursing a loaded revolver. Captain Ahrens must have had a more pressing engagement because dawn broke without him. After waiting for about half an hour, the Colonel departed with body and honour intact.

Breathing in a mask WE have had so many people complaining to us about masks making them feel dizzy, tired, dry in the mouth and worsening headaches. Interestingly these symptoms can all be ampliďŹ ed by mouth breathing and shallow breathing. Many people mouth breathe when they feel anxious or stressed. “Two of my favourite feathered visitors are the White Faced Heron and the Grey Shrike Thrush which has a beautiful song.” Judy said that during the other days, weeks and months of the year when the bird count is not happening, she continues to observe the birds in her yard. “I enjoy contributing information to assist in managing the birdlife and understanding the effects the seasons, environment, bushfires and weather have on their distribution,” she said. Beechworth couple, Read and Steve North participated in their first Aussie Backyard Bird Count last year, and the couple are eagerly awaiting the chance to do it again tin 2020, describ-

ing themselves as enthusiastic bird novices who have been on a ‘steep bird and gardening learning curve’ since they moved to the region seven years ago. “Before moving to the North East in 2013, we lived in the outer Northern Suburbs of Melbourne on a tiny little block,” Read said. “We had always wanted to make our home in the country, so our move to Beechworth in 2014 was a lifestyle move. “We wanted to be surrounded by trees and gardens and have been working on that for the past six years. A friend’s father, himself a keen bird watcher, told Read and Steve about the bird count and they quickly downloaded the app - which includes an easy

to use Field Guide to help identify what you’ve spotted. “You don’t need to be a bird expert (and I’m certainly not) to count,” Read said. “All you really need is to be interested and be able to set aside 20 minutes to observe the birds around you, where ever you may be - at home, in the park, or even outside in your work lunch break.” “It’s a great excuse to sit down, relax, and watch birds for 20 minutes, as many times as you like throughout the Bird Count week - I call it ‘productive procrastination’,” Steve added. “You can count solo, with family or friends and I think that as more people participate in the Bird Count, it will result in an abundance of data from all over

Australia, which will give scientists and conservationists a clear snapshot of current bird life and distribution,” Read said. “The changing climate affects bird health and behaviour and the more information that’s collected can only serve to help better understand and respond to these impacts. “When we first moved onto our bare hillside paddock, we mainly saw Magpies and Wedge-Tailed Eagles but as the garden has grown, we’ve had Eastern Spinebills, Kookaburras, Red Rumped Parrots, Crimson and Eastern Rosellas, Superb Fairy Wrens, Wattle Birds, Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoos, Galahs, Honeyeaters, Pardalotes, Robins, Dusky Wood Swallows, Crested Pi-

GONE FISHING

◆ YELLOW GOLD: This perfect sized yellowbelly for the plate was caught in the Broken Creek system late last week on worms.

Great to be fishing IT’S great to finally be back writing my weekly fishing column for North East Media. Trout season is now open and in full swing, thanks to the easing of restrictions for regional Victorians last week. I have experienced reasonable trout fishing, catching a few in the mountain streams but I have had to work hard for them. From what I have heard this seems to be the general feeling among anglers fishing most North East streams although I have had two really good reports of great trout fishing in the Ovens River upstream of Bright. On the weekend I fished at Lake Nillahcootie with my Dad. We were in the boat fishing with bait (worms). From 7am to 11am we tried nine different spots and didn’t get a single bite. We then trolled for an hour and Dad caught one tiny Murray cod on the smaller sized predator lure, and I trolled (fluked) a mirror carp. I was trolling a Tubby Native Minnow and foul hooked the carp in the top (dorsal) fin - what are the chances of that? So Lake Nillahcootie is still fishing really slowly, however it has risen from 22 per cent to 95 per cent over the last few months.

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA Once we get some warmer weather, I am expecting Nillahcootie to really fire this spring and summer. Last Friday I fished the Boosey Creek and Nine Mile Creek, both of which are a part of the Broken Creek system. I was bait fishing with worms and managed to catch two yellowbelly and two carp. One of the yellowbelly was 39cm and was released - into my esky. The other was undersize and released. Before going to Broken Creek last Friday I went to Lake Moodemere for an early morning session. I fished from sunrise for four hours, catching just one carp. It was very slow. Before the lockdown I was experiencing some excellent winter carp fishing at Lake Moodemere.

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ HOLO-GRAPHIC: While some strides have been made in the realm of true holographic technologies, most contemprorary examples are fairly impractical for the types of purposes people would want to use them for.

Future and emerging technologies AS a lifelong fan of science fiction, there has been a multitude of technologies and concepts explored in various novels, films and tv series that has captured my imagination since I was a young kid obsessed with the movie ‘Back to the Future 2’. This week, I thought we’d take a look at emerging technologies and research that closely resembles some of those classic concepts we’ve all dreamed about at some point. Holographs Augmented reality and other sorts of overlay vision technologies seem to have outshined the old dream of a threedimensional hologram. But the technology is still being worked on in certain corners of the tech world. Future holographs won’t require the addition of a special set of eyeglasses, which current VR and AR applications are limited to. The invention of a seamless 3D hologram could potentially allow for the uninterrupted perception of talking to someone thousands of miles away, and make it seem like they were right there in your living room. Artificial gravity One current problem facing any potential long-term space trip is the fact that we can’t generate an environment with artificial gravity.

The ability to do this would allow us to bypass many of the pitfalls of living in a zero gravity environment for long stretches of time. Theoretically it would be possible to generate artificial gravity through centrifugal force. We would need large scale rotating spacecraft, like the one seen in 2001: Space Odyssey. Many fictional space opera shows bypass this problem by conceptualising some gravity generator device. Fusion power The burning of fossil fuels and even new and novel ways of generating power through renewable energy could one day be a thing of the past. To go beyond collecting solar energy and instead generate power through our own fusion reactor would dramatically shift the way we power our civilisation. Since the 1950s, research has gone into the development of fusion. If it were created we’d have an unlimited source of energy. Scientists have figured that just one kilogram of deuterium extracted from water, could per day create enough electricity to power nearly a million homes. It’s going to be a challenge, but some recent advancements have made the promise of unlimited energy look like a future reality.

Cryonics The age old foe that’s haunted life forever. Death and our eventual defeat of it has been immortalised in our first poetic epics and the thwarting of it is now seriously being considered by many of our leading minds. One of the weird ways we’ve thought about overcoming death is by literally freezing ourselves. Cryonics is the “science” of freezing a human corpse with the hopes that we could one day revive the person. Most of the scientific establishment considers this pure quackery. But this hasn’t deterred some of its fiercest proponents. Not to mention, when it comes to death there’s really nothing to lose in trying our hand as a last ditch effort. President of the largest cryonics organisation in the world, Dennis Kowalski, once put it this way - “There’s no guarantee you’ll be able to be brought back, but there is a guarantee that if you get buried or cremated, you’ll never find out.” This so-called quackery could be a game changer for the thousands already frozen if methods become available to revive the dead. Scientists at Yale University just recently were able to restore brain function to pigs after they’d been declared dead for hours.
