FOR Wangaratta’s Paul Camilleri, growing up in Adelaide didn’t have many places to go digging for gold or other treasures, so he spent his time playing football, surfing or fishing instead. But in 1978 at the age of eight, Paul’s father took him to the goldfields of Maryborough, Victoria and his love of finding buried treasure was born. Paul has been detecting seriously for about four years, and loves to head out with mates, Troy Tobias and Mick Stanton, to do some fossicking, with Paul’s wife extremely supportive of his hobby. “Meredith is always quick to ask me when I’m leaving when I mention I might go ‘out for a while’,” Paul laughed. “I love the thrill of the chase and the anticipation of what I might find. “I get a real buzz when I dig up an old coin or relic which might be 200 or more years old and I love to wonder about the story and people behind it. “We’ve found some really cool stuff so far,. “My favourite things to find are World War I medals and medallions. “I found a Returned From Active Service badge (RASB) from 1917 in a Glenrowan paddock. “We contacted the National Archives of Australia (NAA) in Canberra to see if they could help us reunite it with the soldier’s family, but unfortunately they couldn’t find who it belonged to, even though the serial number was on the back of the badge. “I found a Cartwheel penny too, which is a rare English coin from 1797. “These coins are huge and made from copper, they were the first copper pennies to be circulated in Britain. “I don’t know how you’d lose one as it’s 36mm in diameter and weighs one ounce (28 grams).” Paul has also found an old trade token for the Mansfield Hotel at Eldorado.

Dementia in companion animals AS our knowledge and awareness of healthcare in our companion animals increases, so does the expected lifespan of our four-legged friends. Along with this increased life expectancy has come a rise in incidence (and recognition) of cognitive dysfunction disorders that mirror disease processes such as Alzheimer’s in humans. These disorders greatly affect not only the quality of life our pets but also tend to affect the whole household as they can lead to disrupted nights’ sleep or what seems like endless ‘tidying up’ of accidents in the house. Cognitive dysfunctions or dementia can present in a multitude of ways and can present differently in dogs vs cats. It’s also important to consider that other diseases of geriatric animals can be closely linked or easily confused with dementia, such as arthritis, blindness, deafness or thyroid disorders. Some signs that may indicate that your pet is suffering from this condition are: t 5IFZ TUBSF JOUP TQBDF CBSL NFPX PS vocalise for no apparent reason or wander aimlessly. t 5IFZ HFU EJTPSJFOUBUFE JO BSFBT UIFZ know, get stuck behind objects or walk into walls or objects. t 5IFZ EPO U TFFN UP SFNFNCFS NFN bers of the household (humans or animals).

â—† WATER: Plants that are grown in pots dry out quickly so regular watering is essential
Gardens in the dry season
8& IBWF BMM IFBSE UIF NFTTBHFT GSPN UIF XFBUIFS HV rus warning us of an early dry season which can make all gardeners very nervous. 8BUFS JT CFDPNJOH B QSFDJPVT BOE FYQFOTJWF SF source, especially if water restrictions are enforced. So what can we do to help our precious plants survive over the dry season? Building up our gardens beds with organic matter and applying mulch is a very important way to conserve soil moisture and can reduce the amount of water needed by up to 50 per cent. "MXBZT BQQMZ XBUFS m STU CFGPSF BEEJOH BOZ NVMDI NB terials and never apply mulch directly against the trunks of trees or shrubs as this can cause fungal issues beneath the bark. 8BUFSJOH ZPVS QMBOUT FBSMZ JO UIF NPSOJOH FOTVSFT UIBU the water doesn’t evaporate before soaking into the soil. Deep soaking rather than light hand watering, several times a week over the summer, encourages the plants to grow roots down into the soil. Controlling weeds at this time is crucial as they will compete with your plants for every precious drop. Plants that are grown in pots dry out quickly so regular watering is essential. A great idea is to group pots with similar water needs together and place them in an obvious spot so as not to forget to water them. This helps keep pots cooler as they will often shade each other. Always use ‘Australian Standard’ potting mix as this contains water storage crystals which will swell when
watered and provide an extra reserve for plant roots to draw upon. Thoroughly wet potting mix until you can see water coming out of the base of the pot, as many people may not realise that if potting mix dries out between watering, the mix can become water repellent instead. In order to remedy this, you can apply soil ‘wetters’ to help the water penetrate deeply into the soil again. Using liquid fertilisers in the hotter months, both in pots and on garden beds, helps to aid moisture retention instead of applying dry fertilisers which tend to absorb moisture and can result in a burning effect on plant roots. Using ground covering plants that spread thickly over garden beds are also a natural mulch. Vegetables and fruit trees must have water to crop properly which can be difficult when water is in short supply. Create windbreaks around orchards and vegetable patches to help reduce water loss from leaves and soil. Start your seedlings under shelter and transplant when at their largest, so they are less vulnerable to heat stress. Shade your veggies and fruit during extreme hot weather to prevent ‘sundried’ produce. (SFZ XBUFS GSPN UIF MBVOESZ BOE PS CBUISPPNT OPU toilet) can be used with care around trees, while being mindful to use low-sodium and low-phosphorus detergents to avoid salt build up in the soil. 3FHVMBSMZ n VTI XJUI GSFTI XBUFS XIFO BCMF UP (SFZ water is not recommended to use on edible plants. with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson and Sophie Lorback ɘ#)4$* /"56301"5):ə ◆ FATIGUE: General symptoms of illness can persist for a prolonged period of time after an acute virus as left your body.
Post viral fatigue and coughs
THIS winter saw the usual exacerbation in upper respiratory tract infections and chest infections. But what we are seeing in the clinic and in our community is the lingering symptom of post viral coughs, fatigue and digestive upsets that have lingered long after the acute virus has passed. We have had great success with soothing dry, scratchy and irritating coughs and thinning stuck tenacious mucous from the chest with therapeutic herbs and nutrients. When you have a cough or lingering fatigue after a virus, rest is important. With sleep disturbances due to the hacking/tickling cough, getting enough rest is a big problem for our clients. This is time to cut your schedule back to the bare minimum. This is often the most difficult thing to do in our society as we have fostered a ‘soldier-on’ mentality that does not serve our nervous or immune system at all.

It’s the thrill of the chase From page 1
During 1855 and 1874, Victorian shopkeepers were allowed make their own copper coins, known as trade tokens, to give change in their stores, provided they didn’t look like normal currency. Mansfield Hotel was one of the first businesses in the town to issue Ale Tokens. When a patron purchased a drink, these tokens (to the value of three pence) were given instead of change and could only be spent at the hotel. There are a few essential items you need for metal detecting, the main one being a decent detector, a good shovel is also important, a pin pointer (a small device which helps you locate the target), a reliable back pack and small container for your finds. If you plan to search for gold, you will also need a miner’s right licence, which costs approximately $30 for 10 years. “You should always leave the place as you find it,” Paul advised. “Fill your holes, take any rubbish with you
and if you’re detecting on private property, always seek the land owner’s permission. “Winter is a great time to go as the ground is easier to dig, and with wet earth you get a better response from your detector from underground targets. “Detecting is a great social activity that you can do with friends or family, you’re out in the fresh air and I know people who do it because it helps with their depression. “It’s really a hobby that anyone can enjoy you should definitely get into it if you have a love for history. “The trick to being successful at detecting is to research your detecting sites, be patient and take your time and then the finds will come. “Learn your machine inside out - 300 hours on your detector and you should be getting there.” The ‘Holy Grail’ for the boys would be to find an Australian gold Sovereign, which are the rarest and most sought after sovereigns in the world.
The first sovereign was struck at the Sydney Mint in 1855, with The Perth Mint producing them between 1899 and 1931. Although The Adelaide Mint was the first mint in Australia and produced Australia’s first gold coin - the Adelaide Pound - in 1852, they never produced gold sovereigns. “Troy found a gold sovereign holder, which was pretty exciting,” Paul said. Sovereign holders were made from silver and were used for carrying either full or half gold sovereigns. In the shape of a locket or pocket watch, they were often worn on a chain either around the neck or in the pocket of a gentleman’s waistcoat. “Unfortunately, it was full of dirt rather than sovereigns, but imagine if it had had sovereigns in it?,” said Paul. That would have been awesome.” For anyone interested in learning more about metal detecting, or in following the boys’ adventures, you can watch or subscribe to their YouTube channel called Cointector.

GONE FISHING
TECH & SCIENCE
Trout fishing remains patchy LAST week I went trout ďŹ shing in the Buckland River where I found the ďŹ shing to be patchy. In some places the ďŹ shing was great and in other places the ďŹ shing was dead. At one point I got in and waded upstream for over two hours. I caught ďŹ ve trout, all of which were caught on a gold Super Vibrax spinner within the ďŹ rst half an hour of arriving. I was having a blast, when just like that the action stopped and I barely sighted another ďŹ sh. I also ďŹ shed a couple of the tributaries of the Buckland to no avail, however I did get a report from a fella who also ďŹ shed the Buckland last week and also caught ďŹ ve trout. He was right down near the junction with the Ovens River whereas I was up high in the catchment. There have been a few carp caught at Lake Moodemere over the last week, but no further reports of the elusive Moodemere yellowbelly. The pond behind the tennis courts at Merriwa Park (Merriwa Park Lake) in Wangaratta has still
with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA got quite a few rainbow trout in it and my friend Tim has been catching a few on spinners. Stanley Dam is ďŹ shing very well and producing quite a lot of rainbow trout. Both of the above mentioned waterways were stocked for the September school holidays, but thanks to the football ďŹ nals, the open trout season and whatever other reasons they seem to have not seen as much ďŹ shing pressure which is why there’s still quite a few trout in each. Lastly, the yellowbelly are really starting to ďŹ re in pretty much every waterway that has them. I have seen photos of yellowbelly caught in Lakes Nillahcootie, Eildon, Hume and various other waterways including irrigation channels.

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ WHY THE LONG NECK: A giraffe’s long neck, which can reach seven feet in length, allows them to eat the highest foliage on trees, giving them an advantage over other animals when it comes to competing for food.
Giraffes, the tallest mammal in the world OF all the animals in Africa, giraffes would have to be my favourite. Not only are they the tallest animal in the world, their physiology makes them a truly unique mammal. This week, I thought we’d take a look at these majestic creatures and answer some common questions people have about them. How tall are giraffes? The giraffe is the tallest mammal in the world, standing at around four to ďŹ ve metres high, and the tallest giraffes ever recorded have been up to 5.9m - over a metre higher than a double-decker bus. It shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that such a large animal weighs quite a lot as well - up to 1900kg, which is more than most cars. One of my favourite giraffe facts is that they’re probably the biggest pollinators in the world thanks to their great height. As they wander around feeding from the tops of trees, they inadvertently transfer genetic material on their muzzles from the owers of one tree to those of another. How many bones do giraffes have in their necks? Despite being incredibly tall, giraffes still only have seven vertebrae in their necks - which, interestingly, means a giraffe neck has the exact same num-
ber of bones as a human neck. Each vertebrae is several inches long. How do giraffes drink when they’re so tall? A giraffe’s neck is too short to reach the ground. Consequently, it must shuffle and spread its front legs to reach the ground for a drink of water. Fortunately giraffes only need to drink once every few days, as they can get most of their water from the plants they eat. Will a giraffe faint if it stands up too quickly? A fully grown giraffe can raise or lower its head by up to ďŹ ve metres, so it might actually pass out were it not for a dense network of ďŹ ne capillaries (the ‘rete mirabile’) that cushions it’s brain against rapid changes in blood pressure. Other adaptations to prevent sudden giraffe collapse are valves to stop the back-ow of blood and elasticwalled vessels that dilate and constrict to manage ow. Interestingly, NASA conducted research on the blood vessels in giraffe legs to get inspiration for human space suits. Are giraffes endangered? Giraffe tails are highly prized by many African cultures and are used

in good-luck bracelets, y whisks, and even thread for sewing or stringing beads. They have lost 40 per cent of their population in just 30 years, and recent reports show poaching and wildlife trafďŹ cking are contributing to this decline. Giraffes are easily killed and poaching (now more often for their meat and hide) continues today. What do giraffes use their horns for? Both male and female giraffes have ‘horns’ at birth. More properly known as ‘ossicones’, they lie at and are not attached to the skull to avoid injury at birth. They only fuse with the skull later in life. Giraffe horns become formidable weapons in adult males, worn bare at the tips - older bulls may even have patches of bare bone elsewhere on their massive, craggy heads. Male giraffes most often use their horns to ďŹ ght other males in displays of dominance. Does each giraffe have a unique pattern? Just like human ďŹ ngerprints, no two giraffes have the same pattern. Researchers who spend long enough studying the same giraffes eventually ďŹ nd that they can recognise dozens or even hundreds of individuals from their patterns.
