Kelly collection deserves space
By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE
A LIFELONG interest in the Ned Kelly story resulted in Matt Shore founding and co-curating the Ned Kelly Vault with his good friend and Kelly biographer, the late Ian Jones, but the collection needs a new home. “I am not a Kelly expert, rather an enthusiast who has been utterly fascinated by this story since I was a little boy when my aunty presented me with the companion magazine to the 1980 television mini-series ‘The Last Outlaw’; I was well and truly hooked,” Matt said. “I worked on three Kelly exhibitions between 2001 and 2005. “Two of the exhibitions were held in Melbourne and a third (much smaller) exhibition was held at the Burke Museum in Beechworth. “The collection was so good that we knew it deserved a museum space of its own so after those exhibitions ended, Ian and I, along with the collection owners, tried to establish a permanent exhibition/museum.” Unfortunately for everyone, a suitable location couldn’t be found in Beechworth so Matt and Ian tried to expand their options with feasibility studies and meetings held in a number of different North East Victoria locations including Glenrowan, Avenel and Benalla.

Dental disease in our pets DENTAL disease is one of the most common conditions seen by veterinarians, with signs developing in dogs early in life. If left undiagnosed and untreated, it can cause significant discomfort to your furry friend. Smelly breath in your pets is not normal and is a sign your pet may be suffering from dental disease. Other signs of dental disease you may notice include discolouration or plaque/ tartar build up around the teeth, redness or inflammation of the gums, difficulty eating or inappetence, discomfort or pawing around the mouth and abnormal swelling around the mouth or eyes. We all brush our teeth every day, why should it be different for our pets? Whilst daily brushing of our pet’s teeth might be hard for most of us to fit into our schedules, it will reduce the build up of plaque, calculus and associated gum disease (gingivitis) later on. Getting your new puppy or kitten used to opening his/her mouth and using a designated toothbrush or pet finger brush will make things much easier down the track for you and your vet. Even brushing once or a couple of times a week will be of benefit, but daily brushing is best. You can buy pet toothpaste (do not use human toothpaste) or alternatively just use water and brush in a simple back and forth motion along the teeth.
In addition to brushing, or if brushing is out of the question for you and your pet, chewing is a simple way to help improve dental health. A daily dental chew or toys that promote chewing feed can also be effective in helping to slow plaque build up. Raw bones may be helpful too but be careful as they can sometimes cause fractures to teeth, especially in puppies. Never feed your dog cooked bones. There are many other products available to prevent the build up of plaque and soften existing plaque such as dental diets. Next time you are at your vet, have a look at what is available and talk to the nurses and vets about your pet’s teeth. Along with best efforts to keep our dog and cat’s teeth clean at home, regular check ups at the vet will help. As part of every vaccination, your vet will check your pet’s teeth and monitor plaque build up and look out for problems. Even with preventative dental care, a scale and polish under general anaesthetic may be indicated. Your vet will let you know if this is the case. Any signs of drooling, dropping food, or not wanting to eat (especially hard food) could be a sign of dental disease in your pet and should be checked out. As always, if you have any concerns about your pet, book in to see your vet or remember to mention it at your next visit.

Elder - Sambucus nigra THE lockdown has not been good for many things, but it has been good for research. Researchers in East Kent Hospitals are investigating whether elderberry liquid may be helpful for symptoms of the virus. Not as a cure, but as symptomatic support. For those who are interested, that article can be found here (https:// www.ekhuft.nhs.uk/patients-andvisitors/news-centre/latest-news/ east-kent-researchers-trial-blackelderberry-liquid-as-a-treatmentfor-covid-19/?fbclid=IwAR2WZp1wM 0dgClE5JTwPVdQJX2W4mkM5N4 4Uw95D6wlOni6wpAAKGw58xL0) Whilst this looks promising and it is good to see herbs getting a look in for what they do best, reducing symptoms and improving recovery

times for viral infections, we can’t say how this study will pan out for COVID sufferers. We can however, vouch for our love of elder trees. Belinda and I go foraging for elder flowers locally every November and every January we try to beat the birds for the tart blackberries. These trees grow like weeds in this environment and as smaller shrubby trees, they can easily be grown in a backyard garden. They grow best in full sun (must be why the cordial reminds me of summer in a glass) in well retentive, well drained soil and once established are fairly drought tolerant. Elders do look a bit scruffy (a haircut immediately after flowering can help them keep shape), but don’t be fooled.
In early and late Summer they provide a plethora of floral and fruit waiting to be turned into cordial, wine syrup and medicines. Why not have a go at planting an elderberry tree, or a small plantation? Make sure it is species Sambucus nigra if you want to stock your medicine cupboard with elder syrup gummies, elder rob for sore throats and delicious summery cordial for your G and T. If you want to know more about the medicinal uses of this plant, keep your eyes peeled for our 2021 workshops on DIY medicine making at North East Natural Health Centre. You can learn to harvest grow and make your own medicines... and you’ll get free medicinal cordial from your tree and our workshop.

All Saints Estate 2019 Marsanne THERE are peculiar kinds of blindness we all suffer from, from time to time. There are those whose sheds are so full of stuff they couldn’t swing a cat but they’ll still spot it when a single tool has been moved. There are others who own 100 old t-shirts but notice straight away if one is missing when you’ve tried to slip it into the rubbish bin. I confess to having complete blindness when it comes to the makes and models of cars, and would be hopeless if I had to identify the getaway car after a bank robbery. However when I see someone drinking a beer or pouring wine I can easily tell you what brand it was, no matter how far away they were. Call it selective sight, but where there is an interest it seems the brain is able to store those familiar markers into the memory banks. I recognise the familiar cursive font of All Saints Estate from a long distance and the sight of the word Marsanne immediately makes my mouth water. This refreshing white wine has a golden straw colour and

light floral aroma which leans towards stone fruit and honey. The flavour is peachy, with a nice, soft mouth-feel and developing honey warmth, but there is also a firm citrus edge. Enjoy only lightly chilled and in a bigger glass to appreciate its softness and complexity. My glass may still look half full, but it’s perfectly clear to me that it needs topping up.
Available from local outlets or the cellar door in Rutherglen. About $26.
This Day in History, 1883 CRICKET purists said no good would come of this new overarm style of bowling and they were right. Charles Clay, a ledger clerk at the Bank of Victoria in Shepparton was shaping up to play a shot in a match against Mooroopna, when the ball slipped from the bowler’s hand and Clay took a heavy blow over the heart. He fell to the pitch, and died. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death.
The 80/15/5 rule of good health CLIENTS often ask me do they have to ‘be good’ all the time or forever? Everyone has certain nurture points in their body that they need to ‘nurture’ to be the best that they can be - but it’s what you do most of the time that counts. This is your base, your foundation, and will improve your health and increase your energy. The better you feel, the more inspired you’ll be to improve your health. When I was much younger and studying naturopathy I just loved learning about natural health and trying things out on my own body - though I was also quite idealistic and rigid in my thinking. I thought that I had to do everything 100% to be effective and stay at super optimal health which was my aim. There was no wavering. Now, thank goodness, I live in the real world and really I love it. That’s why I just adore the 80/15/5 rule.
If 80% of the time if you eat right for your body, exercise and generally look after yourself, that’s great. If 15% of the time if you visit Aunty Mabel and she’s made a delicious upside down pineapple cake or you’re partial to your mum’s home-made lasagne with the amazing cheese sauce on to top, then go for it. Lastly, 5% of the time if you really love a good coffee and a tiramisu or other delicacies, then enjoy it. However, really enjoy it - sit down and have it after a movie or with good friends rather than as you are rushing home. The best thing you can do for your health is to work out what is the best 80% for you. An iridology assessment cant help this as your structure and colours of your irises are packed with an incredible amount of information about how you can be the best that you can be. Your iris can tell you whether you
are better to start your day with protein or carbohydrates, whether you need small regular meals rather than larger meals, whether you should avoid too much dairy or acidic forming foods - and a whole lot more. Putting time and effort into your meals is important, as is sitting down and eating mindfully. Eating with positivity has been shown to increase your immune system so if you are eating something you think you shouldn’t, there’s no point in berating yourself afterwards - learn to make better choices next time. Choose wisely, be calm, enjoy food, enjoy life and be the best that you can be. For an iridology assessment or to find out what your constitution and nurture points are call the North East Naturopathic Group (we are now part of Wangaratta Wellness Centre) on 5798 3344.

But it all came to nothing, until Patrick Watt commenced his role as manager of the Burke Museum in 2014. “We approached Patrick and the ball started rolling almost right away with the Indigo Shire allowing us use of the historic sub-treasury and museum staff to oversee the day to day running of the Vault,” he said. “Over the past six years, more than 40 local volunteers staffed the Ned Kelly Vault and it has been very much part of the historical precinct during that time. “The collection is pretty extensive; I will say it’s nationally significant. “It is made up of many separate parts and pretty unique in its composition. “There are of course some incredible objects in public collections, such as the Kelly armour, for example. “The Kelly collection at the Ned Kelly Vault includes items such as the original forge/smithy door from Ned’s maternal grandparents home near Wallan, there’s
the first reward notice ever published for the Kelly Gang, rare books from 1880 to today, film scripts, Ned’s favourite rifle which he named ‘Betty’, bullets removed from Ned at Glenrowan, the bullet-riddled dining room table from the Glenrowan Inn, which miraculously survived the gunfight, a rare family photo of Ned and Dan Kelly together and so much more. “The list goes on and on and there are many items we didn’t get to display at the Vault because we didn’t have the room,” Matt added. “In that sense, it tells the story of the Kelly gang and Ned himself from its beginnings right through to the present day. “I think it’s important to acknowledge the story didn’t end with Kelly’s hanging in 1880; the story continues to evolve, inspire and divide and will continue to do so for many years to come.” Several items owned by the Burke Museum will be retained there for museum and precinct display and interpretation however, the bulk of the collection is yet

to find a new home in the North East and has reportedly had plenty of interest. Indigo Shire Council chief executive officer Trevor Ierino said the collection that Matt assembled was an ‘exciting and significant piece’ of Kelly history. “It would be a positive outcome for Beechworth if Matt can find a suitable home in the town that does justice to the size and scope of the collection,” he said. “Indigo Shire has had a great working relationship with Matt since 2014; we wish Matt all the best in the next stage of the collection’s journey and look forward to seeing what happens with the collection. The collection has been linked to the proposed Ned Kelly Alive project in Glenrowan but time will tell if it comes to fruition. If you know of a suitable space the collection could be housed in, or you have items you would like to donate to the collection, contact Matt Shore at nedkellyvault@gmail.com.

GONE FISHING
nemedia.com.au
TECH & SCIENCE
◆ YUMMY: A nice feed of Lake Hume redfin caught while kayak fishing at Huon Reserve last Thursday.
Redfin still running in Hume, trout in rivers THERE are still patches of of high and dirty water around North East Victoria from rainfall earlier this month. The Ovens River is still much higher and dirtier than usual around the Wangaratta area. I went lure fishing on the outskirts of Wangaratta on Saturday evening and did not get a single touch from a fish. It was so quiet that my lure got bored. Wading was difficult in the fast flowing water too. I have not had many reports of Murray cod being caught on lures in the Ovens River this week however bait fishing has been very productive, with live shrimp being the best bait. My friend Tim Galley and I managed to catch a few small cod on shrimp on Friday evening in the lower Ovens, and on Thursday evening I caught three small yellowbelly and one small cod. One was caught on worms and the rest shrimp. So if you are heading to the Ovens River at the moment, make sure you take a shrimp net. Lake Hume is still firing with
with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ ATOMIC: It was the development of this terrible weapon of mass destruction that led us to nuclear energy.
Inventions and innovations of World War 2 with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA some nice sized redfin. I went there last Thursday. Fishing from my kayak at Huon Reserve I managed to catch around 20 or so redfin, keeping five nice sized fish for a feed. My fish were not record breaking, but they were big enough to fillet and tasted magnificent. Most of mine were caught on a Strike Tiger soft plastic 1.5” curl tail grubbed, trolled about 50cm up the line from a Halco Crazy Deep deep diving lure. Some fish hit the lure but most preferred the plastic. Also thanks to the recent rainfall, we are seeing some great trout fishing in many of the region’s streams, including the Ovens and Kiewa rivers which are carrying more water than they usually do at this time of the year.
TO say that World War II completely changed the world always sounds like either a massive understatement or a trivialisation of the entire conflict. However, the simple fact is that the war really did change everything - including ushering in a new technological age. The violence, terror, and horror of war is not something we should ever make light of, yet we are remiss not to reflect on the technologies that emerged during this period of history. Understanding where our technology comes from is, ultimately, the best way to ensure it is not misused in the future. Nuclear power The potential power stored within the Atom had been known for quite some time prior, but it was during WWII that the race to harness its power really began. The US beat the Axis powers to the finish line with the Manhattan Project, which developed the first Atom bomb. On August 6th 1945 the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, then on August 9th 1945 a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. It’s estimated that between 150,000 and 250,000 people were killed
as a direct result. There’s been a lot of controversy surrounding these events and the development of nuclear weapons ever since. However, without this discovery there would be no nuclear power, which has largely remained a safe and - arguably - comparatively clean way of generating electricity. The first computer With the Germans encrypting practically every message, Bletchley Park was put into operation to decode them and give the Allies a massive advantage. In the process, the incredible team that worked there, created the world’s first computer. The main focus of Bletchley Park was breaking the code generated by the German Enigma machine; which involved creating another mechanical machine, known as the Bombe. However, the cryptologists were also tasked with breaking the far-harder Lorenz cipher, whose traffic was known as Tunny. This was created by Lorenz machines, which were far larger, and therefore not portable, but much more complex than Enigma. As this traffic was used by the German High Command, the messages en-
crypted were incredibly important. Lorenz machines were closer to modern encryption than Enigma. Penicillin Discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1928, it wasn’t until 1939 that Howard Florey and a team of researchers showed the potential of penicillin - and it was during the war that the antibiotic gained its popularity. In 1943 the US War Production Board came up with a plan for the mass distribution of penicillin to Allied troops fighting in Europe. By 1944, the US had produced 2.3 million doses and the medicine is credited with saving an estimated 12 to 15 per cent of casualties. Radar In 1886 Heinrich Hertz showed that radio waves could be reflected by solid objects, setting in motion the technological advancements that would become Radar and even leading to microwave ovens. This work was to be heavily developed and improved upon during the war, particularly by the British who had need of the technology to detect incoming bombers during the Battle of Britain and scramble a fighter response.
