Canvassing the garden for inspiration By BELINDA HARRISON WITH a vocal, pint-sized boss determined to ensure his needs are her top-most priority, Wangaratta artist Joelene Mitchell’s dreams of a full-time painting career look like they’ll have to wait until her son grows out of the ‘terrible twos’. “I would love for art to be my full-time job, but Charlie is a task driver and won’t let me off the hook that easily,” Joelene laughed. Joelene has been lucky enough to stay at home for the last couple of years and focus on raising her children with partner Brendan, but said she’d also found time for herself to sneak out to her studio while Charlie was at occasional care or catching up on some much needed sleep. “I’ve also lost myself to some very late nights making the most of the quiet when everyone else is asleep, which has been divine,” Joelene added. Creativity seems to run in Joelene’s family with her father an artist blacksmith who has made incredible works forged out of iron and her mother creating beautiful pencil work in graphite and coloured pencils along with delicate botanical watercolours. “I can recall watching my late grandmother painting still lifes in oil when I was little and I have watercolours which belonged to my great-grandmother framed and hanging in my lounge.” Joelene’s first introduction to art after high school was in folk art. She joined the Victorian Society of Folk and Decorative Artists and attended some of their classes and retreats in Melbourne, even teaching a couple of classes locally before she set aside her paints and focused on first time motherhood to her daughter Grace (now 14).

Healthy weight in our pets IS my pet a healthy weight? This is a common question asked by pet owners in the veterinary consult and an important thing to understand. It is estimated that about 40% of dogs and 30% of cats in Australia are overweight. It is important to keep our pets fit and at a healthy weight to reduce the risk of obesity related health issues such as; pancreatitis, diabetes, cardiac disease, arthritis and lower urinary tract disease. How do I tell if my pet is overweight? At each veterinary visit, your vet will assess your pets weight by performing a body condition score. Your pets weight is assessed from a score of 5, where 3 is an ideal body weight and score 4 or 5 indicate obesity. Things they will be looking at and things you may no-
with Freya Williams, Wangaratta Veterinary Clinic tice at home are; does your pet have a reduced waistline? Is there increased fat coverage over the ribs, hips and tail base? Other things you may notice at home to indicate your pet may be overweight are related to reduced mobility and activity - do they waddle when walking? Are they less willing to go on walks? Do you ever notice shortness of breath? If you are concerned your pet may be overweight, discuss this at your next vet visit. Your veterinary team will be able to discuss various weight loss options appropriate for your pet.

NATIVE grasses play an important role in many habitats and they can in backyards too. Native grasses provide shelter from predators for many small creatures like finches and skinks. They attract insects for other creatures to eat and provide food in the form of seeds for many birds. Plant some native seed grasses under trees, shrubs and plants, and in empty areas of your backyard. If you do, you will soon be seeing plenty more butterflies, birds, skinks and other creatures. There are varieties of native grasses to suit every climate. They are a great addition to your garden and can be easily grown from seed with a little care and patience. Seeds are most successfully germinated in small pots or tubes and covered with a little potting mix, or you can buy the grasses from your local native nursery and plant straight into the ground. Some good seed giving grasses include: Common Wallaby Grass - Danthonia tenuior. This grass will attract finches and other seed-eating birds like rosellas and some parrots. It grows in: Western Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales, and South Australia. Wallaby Grass - Danthonia caespitosa. This grass

Buller Wines Fine Old Tokay
THERE is something quite special about the intertwining of the old and the new. While we have all had to upskill and embrace new technology in order to communicate face to face, at the same time its reconnecting generations in an exciting new way. It has opened up the opportunity for those living far apart to connect more often and in a much more uid way, beyond formalised events and special occasions. We’ve also found ourselves turning toward more traditional forms of entertainment at home, playing games, solving puzzles, sitting around the table and making meals together. There are aspects to the new normal I hope we’ll continue with a greater sense of appreciation for each other and the simple pleasures in life. Rutherglen fortiďŹ ed wines used to be a fashionable after dinner drink our parents and grandparents brought out and I’m all for bringing them back again this winter. Buller Wines ďŹ ne old Tokay immediately tempts with its gloriously golden amber colour and it continues with a dreamy caramel-fruity bouquet that makes you feel like oating away.

The lip-smacking Muscadelle liquor has bright yet also quite complex oak-infused toffee avours which hint at orange peel and linger beautifully in your mouth, while the spirit resonates and warms your ears. It’s just the ticket for a quiet night in by the ďŹ re, perhaps while sharing some creamy blue cheese eaten straight off the end of a knife. The â€œďŹ ne oldâ€? range may be at least 10 years old, but that makes it mighty ďŹ ne by me. Around $25.
This Day in History, 1919 GREAT celebrations all over the North East as peace was declared. It had been a long wait between Armistice the previous year and the final acceptance of peace terms, but the signatures had been affixed and it was all official. At South Wangaratta, the news was phoned through from the Chronicle office, and immediately the Union Jack was flown, several patriotic songs were sung, the teacher Mr F.W. Powell delivered an address to mark the occasion and three rousing cheers were given for the troops.
with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson and Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY)
Let’s get to the guts of it A LARGE population of our community is suffering from gastrointestinal dysfunction in one way or another. Commonly we hear people are putting up with constipation (anything less than one stool a day), diarrhea, ulcers, heartburn/reux, gas and wind and discomfort in their digestion. Why are you putting up with it? Your gut isn’t just for digestion, it is also an area of your body that has a large number of receptors for moods and immunity. When our digestion is compromised by the above symptoms or some medications like PPI (antacids like Nexium, Losec etc) our natural ability to absorb nutrients like iron, magnesium and calcium are compromised and so to is the ability of the mood and immune system receptors to function correctly, leaving you uptight, anxious, with low moods, stressed and having that “gut feel-
ingâ€? that something isn’t quite right. Working to improve your digestion is a real art form and one that is taught to us through our four years of university. It helps us literally get to the “guts of the problemâ€?. Naturopaths are trained to look at what is affecting the GIT’s function and causing it to react in this way. Rather than how do I suppress that symptom in the GIT? Looking at alternative reasons can often lead us down a path to long term resolution of symptoms without our remedies causing side effects and other nutritional deďŹ ciencies. Naturopaths are brilliant at supporting the body as a whole to improve digestion, moods and immune system as one intertwined ecosystem. We look forward to seeing you in clinic soon.

Joelene dabbled on and off in the intervening years until four years ago, when she discovered Tamara Laporte’s classes online and her desire to ‘do more painting’ was reignited. Throughout the year-long class, Joelene learnt from different artists and met a flood of incredible teachers. She also attended workshops with Susan Nethercote, Jacqueline Coates and local artists Kate Jenvey, Margaret Zeal and Kathy Ellem. “All of those women are incredibly talented and generous with their time and I feel so lucky to have been able to learn from them through the classes and workshops.” Joelene’s medium of choice is acrylics on canvas. “I love the feel of the brush gliding across the canvas,” she said. “Acrylics are also fast drying so while sometimes it’s a little frustrating with the heaters on or in mid-summer,
you can learn to keep them open for a little while and work quickly. “It also makes storage of completed pieces a bit easier as the drying/curing time is pretty quick. “In saying that though, I do have a stash of oil paints that I’m trying to get the courage up to try; I think once I start however I’ll love how they blend together and remain workable for a lot longer.” Joelene also loves watercolours but admits that she often jumps straight in (to painting) before thinking about which areas need highlighting and less paint. “I’m a bit too impatient waiting for the layers to dry before adding more paint too, but I guess it’s good for practising my patience.” Roses, peonies and macro florals on large canvases are becoming Joelene’s signature, with the artist explaining that she loves the tiny details of nature and how meditative and invigorating it is for her to paint them.
There’s also often a personal connection for Joelene and the flowers which make it to her canvas - the reference photos she keeps in her phone (of which there are thousands!) grown in her garden or from local gardens. “The kids know that if I wander off into a garden they’ll most likely have to drag me away, begging to be allowed to take a couple more shots. “There’s a magic about painting flowers that I just love - the detail and flow of the petals of peonies especially - they’re my absolute favourite to work with and I’ll find any excuse to purchase a bunch, or a plant or visit a peony farm. “Late last year I arranged for a small group of artists to visit a prominent peony farm in Monbulk where Ron grows thousands of varieties; we were in heaven and came away with a lifetime’s worth of photos, yet we all plan to go back again next season. “On my easel at the moment is a large painting of some iceberg roses from my front garden.
“The light play of early morning, or later in the day as the afternoon sun and shadows from the house meet creates some interesting shadow play and the colour variations are fun to watch.” Earlier this month, Joelene was involved in an online art sale with Gallery 1111 Pollinator Project which raises money for projects around the world supporting wildlife and pollinators. “I was very grateful to have sold several pieces, with a couple currently making their way across to the United States,” Joelene said. “Two of the pieces that were snapped up very quickly were from the Iceberg rose series and now I’m busily trying to add more paintings back into my collection, which is a lovely situation to be in.” To arrange a private viewing of Joelene’s work or to find out which local art shows she will be involved in, visit her social media channels on Facebook or Instagram @peonygirlart.

nemedia.com.au THIS is the third in a regular series featuring recipes that have become popular during the COVID-19 lockdown. This recipe comes from journalist Nick Sinis. Nick shares his secret recipe for crusty sourdough. Perfect for breakfast or served on the side with soup or saucy pasta dishes. This recipe will give you a beautiful sourdough that is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

Good snowfall for start of ski season WITH the ski season able to (ďŹ nally) open this week, a number of our resorts have received good snowfall in the last couple of weeks. This will hold them in good stead as people ock to the mountains a few weeks later than usual, and with more vigour considering we’ve all had to stay at home so much. Falls Creek has been blanketed with its third snowfall this month and Mt Hotham has also seen several light dustings of snow in the past week, with temperatures dipping to freezing level. For those who have already returned to the mountain in preparation for the opening weekend, they’ve awoken to fresh snowfalls and crisp mornings. At Mt Buller, ski hire, retail outlets and supermarket services are back up and running and HARROART Gallery, which is new to the village for 2020, brings Tony Harrington’s collection of photographic art and installations in a new location.
Food and beverage services are available from the following: ABOM Cafe and bar, Skates Cafe, Buller Grocer, BT Pizzeria, Birdcage, Ski Club Victoria, Coffee Garage, Dump Inn Bar, The Whitt Restaurant, Kooroora Hotel, Pat’s Italian Restaurant and Bar, T’s Cafe, Little Villager, The Villager and Spurs. Mt Buffalo is open for the 2020 season but there will be a limit on the number of visitors permitted into the park at any one time. Once capacity is met, entry to the park will be temporarily halted to manage visitor numbers. Vehicles will be permitted to enter as other vehicles leave. Parks Victoria staff will be at the park entry to assist visitors and monitor vehicle numbers. This recipe comes from a close friend who worked alongside bakers in the Yarra Valley, who taught him the best way to craft authentic sourdough. Creating bread requires a lot of time and patience, so it has been a great isolation recipe to make during the recent months. Once you make homemade bread the supermarket will never compare again.
