◆ ACCOMPLISHED: Mieke Boynton has captured landscapes from all over the world during her photography career.

By KYLIE WILSON HER life and work has taken photographer Mieke Boynton across Australia and all over the world, but the North East is where she feels most at home. Her early years were spent in Myrtleford and Porepunkah, including attending Marian College, before heading to boarding school in Melbourne in Year 10. After school, she spent four years studying literature in America under a rowing scholarship, before returning to Australia to teach. In 2008, she moved to Wyndham in the Kimberleys to teach indigenous students. Whenever she got a spare moment, she explored the natural wonders of the region, taking pictures of the stunning surroundings, and Mieke said that is the moment she fell in love with photography - and with the Kimberley region. “I went everywhere and took photos of everything,” she said. “The colours were nothing like I’d ever seen before. “It felt like arriving in Eden.” She then requalified as a librarian before spending time working at the Kimberley Land Council in Derby and managing the TAFE Library Services in Broome, all the while spending her spare time taking photos and selling her works at local markets. Eventually, she took the leap to become a professional photographer and has not looked back since, moving back to the North East a year and a half ago.

Ageing gracefully with arthritis ARE you feeling a little arthritic at the moment with all this cold weather? Aches? Pains? Trouble getting out of bed? These are all things that your beloved pets could also be feeling, especially at this time of the year. As your pet matures and gets into their senior years, they are more likely to develop some health problems including arthritis. Knowing the signs to look for, means these can be brought to your vet’s attention early, ensuring your pet has the best chance at a comfortable retirement. Many people with arthritic pets see changes such as slowing down, stiff legs and eating less, and attribute this to ‘getting old’. All these signs can be related to osteoarthritis and are caused by the cartilage in the joint wearing down over time, due to either an old injury or poor conformation. Diagnosis from your vet can be made by feeling and moving the joints to identify areas of crepitus (a grating feeling when things don’t slide smoothly), swelling or pain. In some cases x-rays may be needed

with Dr Chloe Trompf, VETERINARIAN

to show underlying changes in the joint that are not visible from the outside. Unfortunately we cannot cure osteoarthritis, however we can manage the pain and discomfort associated. There are a variety of treatment options ranging from non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) which decrease inflammation of the affected joints and provide pain relief, natural anti-inflammatory products that contain green-lip mussel extracts, cartilage regeneration injections and specialised diets containing Omega-3 fatty acids. Pets respond differently to different osteoarthritis medications, so it is a matter of having your vet assess your pet to decide which treatment is best. Dogs and cats age faster than we realise! One year is equivalent to 5-7 dog years, and it’s up to us to make sure that they get the chance to age gracefully so they can enjoy a long and happy life with you.

VET CORNER THIS week’s pet of the week at Wangaratta RSPCA is Charlotte, a 10 month old, female domestic shorthair cat who is black and white in colour. To see more animals up for adoption at the Wangaratta RSPCA, visit the shelter in Connell Street or phone (03) 5722 2874.

◆ HYBRID: Hakea ‘Burrendong Beauty’.

with Helen van Riet AUSTRALIAN PLANTS SOCIETY (VIC)

◆ DISTINCTIVE: Hakea petiolaris.

Something different THE evolution of plant species through natural selection has ensured survival of the fittest for each specific locality. In undisturbed bushland, we refer to plants specific to a local area as ‘indigenous’. Most gardens are a compilation of selections of species and varieties that have originated from elsewhere. When plants flower and subsequently set seed, the process of natural selection continues through the inherited genes of the progeny. Some garden plants are highly promiscuous – the offspring producing interesting combinations of their shared parental genetic makeup. For centuries, plant breeders have exploited this propensity to cross-breed to develop better food crops and attractive forms, foliage or flowers. Genetic engineering more re-

cently has produced custom-made plants for pharmaceuticals, with higher nutritional value, resistance to diseases and drought. In gardens where plants from the same species but from different regions are grown, hybridisation of the same genus may occur. A most attractive winter-flowering hakea is the result of hybridisation which occurred at Burrendong Arboretum, located near Wellington, NSW. The Arboretum has one of the largest collections of Australian plants in cultivation, including many rare and endangered species. Plants from Western Australia’s low rainfall areas are a feature. In the 1980s a mystery seedling arose. When it flowered, it was identified as a hybrid between Hakea myrtoides and Hakea petiolaris. Both were growing nearby. The hybrid was named Hakea Bur-

rendong Beauty. It has inherited characteristics from both parents. H. myrtoides is a ground-hugging shrub from the Darling Ranges in Western Australia. H. petiolaris is a small tree from South-western WA, from the jarrah forests and wheat belt region. H. Burrendong Beauty is a low shrub - about 1m high x 3m wide. It bears profuse pink flowers in early winter. Leaves are stiff, with attractive linear markings. It is tolerant of dry conditions and moderate frosts. Choose a welldrained, open, sunny position and water regularly until established. It responds well to pruning, and is long-lived. H. Burrendong Beauty must be grown from cuttings to preserve its genetic characteristics. It is readily available commercially.

Indigo Vineyard 2016 Umpires Decision Chardonnay VARIETY is the spice of life, and it’s as true for wine as it is for reading. As much as you might love to read murder mysteries, too many in a row and the plots can start to blend into one. The same goes for some romantic ďŹ ction, which can begin to feel like a journey you’ve been on before that always ends up in the same place. While we might try now and them to improve our minds with award winning literature or reference material, a relaxing read on a rainy day should be about pleasure rather than be a pain. When it comes to wine there are very few varieties I can’t ďŹ nd a time and place for, and some I go back to because I know just how they’re going to play out, and that’s where Chardonnay comes in. Indigo Vineyard Umpires

with Anita McPherson Decision Chardonnay has a golden colour and the aroma of stone fruit and vanilla which hint at its lightly oaked style. There’s a nice weight with some tropical, peach and also citrus fruit, but then also the more developed oaky characteristics rounding it out with honeycomb and almond. The avours stay with you, and also happen to complement dishes like creamy four cheese pasta or some buttery pumpkin gnocchi. The umpire’s decision is ďŹ nal – there’s always going to be a place for Chardonnay. Visit the cellar door in Beechworth or go to www.indigovineyard.com.au

This Day in History, 1867 THE ďŹ rst serious attempt to plant shade trees along Beechworth streets seems to have been made by WT Soulby. He planted a number of English elms on both sides of a property at the corner of Camp and Finch Streets on this day in 1867. There were 14 trees, planted 25 feet apart, and they stretched over 200 feet along Camp Street, and a lesser distance along Finch Street, and Soulby christened his ďŹ nished work “Elm Groveâ€?.

Winter health and wellbeing The ďŹ rst thing to remember about winter, is that it is not just about colds and us, all sorts of health conditions can are up. This is because we tend to spend more time indoors, prolonged time under heating and whilst our bodies want to hibernate and it really feels like there are less hours in the day, we are part of a society that expects as many hours of work/play/social time as in summer. We also tend to take on typical winter behaviours, being inclined to move less and eat heavier richer foods. Here is a list of some common health

Capturing the landscape From page 1

She said her love for photography stems from the fact that she loves beauty and nature, and capturing both for posterity. Landscape photography is her main passion, and Mieke said she ďŹ nds the best way to get a striking shot is going to the location with no expectations or preconceived ideas. “You learn that places have their own personalities,â€? she said. “I let the landscape show me what it wants me to photograph. “The landscape has no expectations; it has no good side or bad side.â€? She has travelled extensively over the years - to destinations as diverse as Patagonia, Norway, Iceland and Morocco - just to name a few - and said that although she doesn’t have a favourite destination to photograph, she held a special place in her heart for the “pristine, undulating sand dunesâ€? of the Sahara Desert. But whatever she does, she loves to come home to the North East and can

often be found photographing the local area’s picturesque landscapes. “Growing up, I didn’t realise how beautiful the North East is, Mieke said. “This is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Mieke, now living in Bright, is currently working on putting together photography workshops, and said her advice to budding photographers includes the fact that people don’t need the latest and most expensive gear to be a good photographer. “Whatever you’ve got, learn it inside and out, she said. “You don’t need a top of the range camera. She added that taking the time to hone your skills and practice was another important factor in learning photography. “It’s just like playing a musical instrument, Mieke explained, adding that connecting with people who also love photography can help you have fun with the pastime and build your skills. Mieke has won many awards for her

work, but she said this year’s win for AIPP Victorian Landscape Photographer of the Year was “incredibleâ€?. She added that the ultimate feeling for her was having people connect with her work. “Any artist wants to ďŹ nd the right audience for their work,â€? she said. “If someone connects with your photograph‌that’s meaningful.â€? Mieke will be exhibiting her work widely this spring, with the ďŹ rst exhibition being of abstract aerial photos called Skyview: Colours of Earth and Water during the Ballarat International Foto Bienniale, taking place between August 24-October 20. She will also have a solo exhibition at Boynton’s Feathertop Winery in Porepunkah from September 19-October 13 called One Year, featuring landscape photos from her travels. Co-working spaces: Australia’s workplace of the future? THE use of co-working spaces is on the rise, but should you accept a job in one or move your employees into a co-working space? According to recruiting experts Hays, there are several pros and cons to consider before you embrace this new trend. “Communal workspaces are not just for start-ups anymore,â€? says Nick Deligiannis, managing director of Hays in Australia and New Zealand. “Big business is embracing the coworking phenomenon, but it’s not for everyone.â€? According to the latest Hays Journal, which explores this issue, coworking chains have grown rapidly. GCUC, a co-working conference company, and Emergent Research, a research and consulting ďŹ rm, found that there were 11,790 co-working spaces globally in 2017, with 1.74 million members. They expect membership to rise to 5.1 million by 2022.

It is thought that co-working will increase by 15 per cent over the next ďŹ ve years – indeed, in Australia alone, the number of co-working spaces grew by a staggering 297 per cent between 2013 and 2017 according to Allwork.Space. The beneďŹ ts “The opportunity to network is a big attraction of co-working spaces,â€? says Nick. “Most co-working companies want to foster a community and many use open-plan desks, as well as hosting regular social events, wellness sessions, product launches and investor meetings.â€? “The open layout of co-working spaces also leads to a more collaborative, personal and socially dynamic culture within an organisation.â€? “Just make sure you ďŹ nd out which other businesses are in the space before you sign up, and whether they align with your goals,â€? advises Nick. Another beneďŹ t is the opportunity

to spot emerging business opportunities. The downside “We are not all the same and to be effective a co-working space must therefore be able to adapt to the needs of individual tenants and their staff,â€? warns Nick. “This includes ensuring there are enough meeting rooms and private areas in which to meet clients or have private conversations. “If you don’t take the appropriate steps, the culture of the co-working company can become more dominant than the employer’s. “Regular video conferences with your head office team and private ofďŹ ces within co-working spaces can help to minimise this risk.â€? A private office within a co-working space also addresses some of the other common drawbacks of coworking: overcrowding, noise, mess and lack of privacy.

LAST Saturday, the 20th of July, marked the 50th anniversary of the successful Apollo 11 manned mission to the moon. On that day, 50 years ago, Neil Armstrong made history by becoming the first person to walk on the moon’s surface. Conceived during the Cold War rivalry between America and the Soviet Union, the mission is now remembered as an iconic moment for spaceflight enthusiasts the world over. In celebration of this marked acheivement, I thought we’d take a look at some interesting facts about our celestial neighbour. The Moon may have formed when a giant object in the solar system hit earth. Scientists aren’t in total agreement on how the Moon formed, but the most widely accepted theory is the giant impact hypothesis. According to this theory, an object the size of Mars called ‘Theia’ collided with Earth 4.5 billion years ago when the solar system was still new and chaotic. The impact dislodged matter from Earth’s crust, and the debris attached to whatever was left of ‘Theia’ through the force of gravity. This scenario would explain why the Moon is made up of lighter elements found in Earth’s outer layer, but it still leaves some questions unanswered. If the giant impact hypothesis is correct, about 60 percent of the Moon should consist of the impact object. Instead, its composition is almost identical to that of Earth. There are alternative explanations: one posits that the Moon is a space object that got caught in Earth’s orbit, and another one suggests the Moon and Earth formed at the same time. The Moon is the perfect size for solar eclipses. A lucky set of circumstances make

◆ FLY ME TO THE MOON: Earth’s Moon is the second largest moon in our solar system. The largest is Ganymede, one of the 79 moons that orbit Jupiter.

total solar eclipses, as seen from Earth, possible. The Moon is just the right size and distance from our planet to appear as the same size as the Sun in the sky. When the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, it covers the Sun perfectly with an impressive corona illuminating its edges. If it were any smaller or farther from Earth, it would look like a blot on the Sun during a solar eclipse. The Moon is shaped like a lemon. The Moon may look perfectly round in the night sky, but it’s actually more of an oval shape. It came out wonky billions of years ago when super-hot tidal forces shaped its crust, heating up some areas hotter than others to form a lemon shape rather than a perfect sphere. Gravitational forces from Earth have helped to exaggerate the Moon’s oblong appearance over eons. Scientists thought Moon dust would cause lunar landers to sink. When preparing to send missions to the Moon, some scientists feared that a thick layer of dust on the body’s surface would cause complications. One of the strongest proponents of the dust theory was Thomas Gold, an astrophysicist at Cornell University. He insisted that the Moon was covered in seas of dust soft and thick enough to swallow a lunar lander. Though the Moon’s surface is dusty, the layer is too thin to cause problems, as the successful landings of the Soviet Luna 9 and the American Surveyor

spacecrafts proved in 1966. The “dark side of the Moon” is the result of synchronous rotation. Even though the Moon is constantly rotating, only one side of it is visible from Earth. This is because the Moon is locked in synchronous rotation. It takes the Moon just as long to complete one full rotation as it does for the body to orbit around the Earth once, so the same side always faces our planet. This isn’t a coincidence—the Earth’s gravitational forces have gradually pulled the tip of the slightly oblong Moon to point toward the planet, creating something called tidal lock. In January 2019, the Chinese space agency landed the first lunar probe on the unexplored dark side of the Moon. The Chang’e 4 spacecraft sent the first photographs of a massive impact crater on the dark side to Earth, giving scientists their first glimpse of that unknown region. Humans are going back to the Moon soon. After completing several manned missions to the Moon, NASA ended the Apollo program in 1972 as budgets tightened and public interest waned. That means most people alive today have never witnessed a manned lunar landing, but now, following a hiatus nearing 50 years, NASA is finally preparing to return to the Moon. The next manned lunar expedition will be ready to launch “no later than the late 2020s,” according to the space agency.
