By KYLIE WILSON A COUNTRY childhood, learning about life from her Italian and Chinese grandparents while growing up in Markwood, have helped inform popular AFLW player Darcy Vescio’s latest role – that of an Ambassador for Multiculturalism. She was recently named as part of the program by the Victorian Multicultural Commission, and said she was humbled to be a part of it. “I feel privileged to be a part of the Ambassadors for Multiculturalism campaign, as it’s so important to share stories of multicultural Australians and highlight our contributions to society,” Darcy said. “People from all walks of life play football and other sports, and sport has a unique way of uniting people to celebrate what you share rather than what your differences are. “Our stories break down barriers, build human connection and bring people together.” Darcy said she had a “really special” childhood, living “across the paddock” from her Italian Nonno Frank Vescio and Nonna Lina Vescio. She also regularly spent time with her mother’s father, of Chinese background, Cheong Lip Louey.

Fixation with new cars comes at a cost AUSTRALIANS love buying new cars and are forking out tens of thousands for the luxury, despite having a number of other financial commitments and goals, a new survey by ME reveals. The status new cars provide, plus falsely assuming new cars cost less over time, were found to be the key reasons behind the obsession. Key findings from the survey of 1000 car owners include: t /FX DBST BSF NPSF QPQV lar than old: 53 per cent of Australian car owners purchased their car new versus 47 per cent who purchased a pre-loved vehicle. t /FX DBS CVZFST BSF TIFMM ing out $20,000 more than used car buyers. While 33 per cent of car owners overall took out finance to buy a car, 41 per cent of new car owners borrowed to buy and 59 per cent of Gen Z car owners borrowed to buy. t "MTP BEEJOH UP UIF FY pense are unexpected running costs: 25 per cent of all car buyers said their car’s running costs were higher than expected, increasing to 39 per cent among Gen Z. ME money expert, Matthew Read, said good financial

sense often takes a backseat when buying new wheels, particularly among young generations. “Status is one of the key reasons we’re obsessed with new cars: 51 per cent of new car buyers said ‘the car they drive says something about them so they prefer to purchase new cars’, rising to 64 per cent among Gen Y, he said. “Owning a new car is a nice luxury, but could $20,000 be used for another savings goal like a house deposit or even simply covering the rising cost of expenses? Mr Read said another factor that might explain the popularity of new cars was a misunderstanding about the relative running costs of new cars versus used cars, with many owners mistakenly thinking new cars cost less overall. “Modern cars are generally well-made and buyers can expect them to run for many years before more serious and costly maintenance is required, he said. “Furthermore, 65 per cent of respondents failed to identify depreciation as the biggest cost of owning a new car in the first three years, including 86 per cent among Gen Z. “If you do your research and negotiate well, buying a preloved vehicle could save you a lot of money.

Insect damage in the garden HELLO readers! I hope you are all busy gardening with this beautiful weather we are having. We have been lucky to get a little bit of rain to keep things growing. A problem I have been asked about a lot lately is curly leaves on plum trees. This is often mistaken for the fungal disease leaf curl. It is actually insects attacking the tree. If you have this problem and look closely at the affected leaves you will see that the inside is riddled with aphid and thrip. Both of these are sucking insects. They are literally sucking the life

out of the leaf causing deformed and stunted foliage. The good news is this problem is easily controlled. You can spray with an insecticide or use an organic option if you prefer. As most of the leaves will already be affected it may seem like it is too late but the damaged leaves will shed and new growth will appear - this is what you are protecting by spraying. Next year if you spray the new growth as it is just appearing you will have a lot less damage. Fruit y is a hot topic at this time of the year. I have recently attended a fruit y information evening run by landcare.

If you get the opportunity to go do, it was very informative. It is absolutely time to be putting out your lures - this is purely an indication of whether or not you have fruit y activity in your garden. I have been advised that the female fruit y lays eggs in the fruit/ vegetables around six weeks prior to normal ripening so make sure you have your protection in place prior to this. Again come and have a chat at the nursery. If we are all doing our bit to help the fruit y problem, we can keep enjoying our homegrown produce. Happy gardening.

FEATURE STORY

Pyometra in cats and dogs PYOMETRA is a disease of entire (non-desexed) female dogs or cats. It is a bacterial infection of the uterus this generally occurs after a dog comes on heat that can result in severe life-threatening illness due to septicemia. Pyometra usually occurs four weeks to four months after a heat. It is most commonly seen in; middle aged-older animals, dogs rather than cats and there is increased occurrence in rough coated collies, rottweilers, Cavalier King Charles spaniels, and golden retrievers. Dogs that develop pyometra will normally present to the vet clinic very unwell. Common signs include; vaginal discharge, lethargy, inappe-

tence, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, drinking and urinating more frequently. Diagnosis is usually made based on clinical signs and confirmed with ultrasonography or radiographs as well as bloodwork. Treatment usually requires hospitalisation for fluid therapy and surgery to remove the infected uterus. Desexing is the only method of prevention of pyometra. If you have any questions in regards to pyometra, contact your veterinary clinic for further information.

◆ PASSION FOR MULTICULTURALISM: Darcy Vescio, seen here speaking at the launch of the Ambassadors for Multiculturalism campaign, wants to use her role to break down community barriers.

Darcy said spending time with relatives for whom English was not a first language fostered her respect and admiration for them and taught her to see beyond language barriers. She added that going to school with a small number of students at Markwood Primary School showed her the value of teamwork and being inclusive, as anyone who wanted to play a game in the playground usually had to get most or all of the school involved to have enough players. Darcy said that while she grew up in a multicultural family and community, exposed to different cultures from an early age, she did not feel different. “I don’t feel like we were treated any differently,” she said. “I never really thought anything we did was different. “It was all about you as a person. “It was pretty special.” Darcy said that she was looking forward to connecting with people from all walks of life in her ambassador role, and said sharing personal experiences was an excellent way to find common ground with others. “I think sharing your story helps people connect with you,” she said, adding

that it helped underline the contribution of those with multicultural backgrounds. “I want to start conversations and open up dialogue for people to share their experiences.” Darcy said as a prominent athlete, she has seen the value of sport in communities throughout her life, with sport being the heart and social glue of many small and regional towns. “You see how important football and netball are to communities,” she said, adding that she thinks sporting bodies have an important role to play in stimulating community conversation. “Everyone who steps on a football field is still a person with values,” she said. “It instills a different sort of passion into the game. “It’s part of why I play football – you can bring about change through sport and sporting conversation.” The ambassadors in the program will promote their multicultural experience by sharing their personal stories - reflecting on the strength of cultural diversity in their lives and experiences and its powerful force in shaping a more inclusive community. The panel of ambassadors also comprises actress Olympia Valance; Victori-

an chef, restaurateur and media personality Karen Martini; AFL premiership star Jack Riewoldt; and successful corporate personality and NBL chairperson Larry Kestelman. VMC chairperson, Helen Kapalos, is hopeful that by adding a range of diverse voices and experiences to the current discussion, the ambassadors will encourage others to share their stories and add to the state’s rich social fabric. “Victoria is well known for its successful and visible brand of multiculturalism, which takes the collective goodwill and efforts of many,” Helen said. “We see the role of our ambassadors as continuing to build a stronger, more resilient and more cohesive society at a time when we need to be reminded of the great gifts our unique diverse society brings”. Through the course of the program, each of the ambassadors will engage with communities across the state, sharing their multicultural stories and how Victoria’s diversity has positively impacted their lives. ◆ WHAT A WHOPPER: Reece Southern with a true monster from Lake William Hovell. This brown trout went 73cm long and weighed 8.3lb.

THIS week’s fishing report contains one of the best fishing photos that I have ever published with this column. This is Reece Southern with a massive brown trout from Lake William Hovell that was caught trolling a scrub worm behind gold cow bells and was one of six trout caught from the boat in a short session. The trout was 73cm long and weighed 8.3lb. Wow, well done to all on board. The trout streams continue to show signs of better fishing. Kingsley Murray, from the YouTube channel ‘Murray Crabb Fishing’, has told me that he and a mate found a small stream here in North East Victo-

ria that is teaming with trout last Friday afternoon. They caught quite a few trout up to 50cm long. Based on Kingsley’s report and my own observations, I can definitely say that the trout are out there in the small streams if you are willing to persevere, look around and explore. Like myself, Kingsley has had a very slow start to the trout season but perseverance has now paid off. I hopped over to Lake Moodemere on Friday afternoon (literally hopped thanks to a sore foot) where I managed to catch two carp on worms before having to come home early on doctor’s orders and have a blood test to find out

what was wrong with my foot. Just like the Richmond Football Club’s reign at the top…it was fun while it lasted. I have had a couple of reports of both yellowbelly and redfin being caught at Lake Nillahcootie with both boat and shore based anglers having success. The larger yellowbelly have been caught using yabbies as bait while smaller yellowbelly, redfin and carp have been caught using worms. Once again there’s rain in the forecast. Will it deliver? If it does deliver, I think an flush of fresh water will make the fish go nuts in just about every waterway.

◆ DRINK UP: Staying hydrated is an important part of maintaining and improving thyroid health.

Thyroid gland health THE thyroid gland is a part of our endocrine system, an intricate system that relies on balance, feedback systems and adequate nutritional status. The thyroid has a big job: the hormones it secretes help regulate heart rate, maintain healthy skin, and play a crucial part in metabolism. When the gland is sluggish (hypothyroidism), it can rob you of energy, dry out your skin, make your joints ache, cause weight gain, and kick-start depression. The endocrine system as a whole influences our fertility, metabolism, immune function, growth and development as well as everyday wellness and health. When an organ of the endocrine system is out of balance it in turn affects the dynamic interrelationship of all or some glands within the endocrine system.

Weight gain associated with hypothyroidism can be contributed by the following: Hormones: an under functioning thyroid gland results in a reduced amount of circulating hormones. The low levels of hormones slow down multiple systems in your body including metabolism, digestion and the ability to burn fat (lose weight). Constipation: the digestive system slows down resulting in constipation, reduced transit time of food, bloating, flatulence and burping. Lethargy: a loss of energy results in people reducing their physical activity. Incorporating exercise into your lifestyle increases the sensitivity of thyroid hormones making them more available for proper function. Exercise also improves

digestive function reducing the above symptoms. Even if your thyroid isn’t working at its best, there are simple diet and lifestyle changes you can make to support its function and or the function of any medications you may be taking. Easy to implement changes include: eating a palm size piece of lean protein and three handfuls of salad or vegetables with each main meal, incorporating whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa, buckwheat. Maintaining hydration is also key assisting with fat burning and alleviating some of the above symptoms. If you are diagnosed with or suspect an endocrine disease such as hypothyroidism, please consult your health care professional for individualised treatment plan.

WINE TALK

FOOD TALK

Pfeiffer Wines 2017 Pinot Grigio FOR some reason, the clock seems to start ticking a little faster at this time of year. Once the footy finals are over, daylight savings starts and spring really kicks in, the diary becomes full of places to go and things to do and most of them are in the great outdoors. It’s the perfect time to visit local agricultural shows, shop at farmer’s markets and enjoy the many festivals taking place throughout the North East. Another highlight is visiting open gardens where you can find so much inspiration, it makes you want to rush home and get cracking in your own garden. After visiting a couple in the region recently it made me think of which wine captured the freshness of spring and the vibrance of a garden in flower, and I came up with Pinot Grigio. Pfeiffer Wines Pinot Grigio

with Anita McPherson is made from fruit sourced in the King Valley and has a hint of florals in its bright, fresh aroma, along with the fruitiness of a just ripening pear. That pomme fruit flavour comes through in the taste, which when not overly chilled also exhibits hints of honey warmth, like the fruit has been sun-kissed. The crisp and dry citrus finish amps up the refreshment factor - and also make it particularly good with a lunch that includes goat’s cheese, frittata or perhaps a cheesy Margherita pizza. It’s the taste of the North East – and let’s face it - who’d want to live anywhere else? Visit the cellar door in Wahgunyah or go to www.pfeifferwinesrutherglen.com.au.

Digital natives need to work on face-to-face communication skills DIGITAL natives are natural online communicators, but recruiting experts Hays warns that for many it’s come at the expense of face-toface communication skills. According to the recruiter, employers are increasingly vetting candidates’ skills in this area. “Digital natives have grown up using the internet and mobile phones, and while they can quickly grasp the latest online communication tools, face-to-face communication has been the cost,â€? says Nick Deligiannis, managing director of Hays in Australia and New Zealand. A recent study found that globally, 65 per cent of Gen Z and Millennials communicate with others more digitally than in person. Consequently, employers are increasingly factoring a candidate’s face-to-face communication skills into their recruitment decisions. Why? “No matter how much technology evolves, face-to-face communication is fundamental for employee learning, productivity, wellbeing, relationship-building and ultimately, career progression and good business,â€? says Nick. “Nothing can replace the human interaction needed to build lasting professional relationships that businesses still rely upon. “And just because you are a digital native, it doesn’t mean you don’t have the face-to-face communication skills needed to thrive in the world of work. “It’s just a case of taking proactive steps to prove this in an interview.â€? To do this, Hays advises: 1. Prove you can build a rapport with others “When you arrive for your interview, greet everybody you are introduced to, regardless of whether they are your interviewer or not, with a warm smile, eye contact and a ďŹ rm handshake. “While these people won’t make the ďŹ nal decision, they will often feed back to the interviewer. “Listen to your interviewer as they speak, and

be careful not to interrupt. “After all, listening is a key part of effective communication. “Body language also plays a big part in face-toface communication and rapport-building. “Looking around the room, leaning back in your chair or ďŹ dgeting can imply your mind is elsewhere. “But positive body language, such as sitting up straight, leaning forward, and nodding and smiling as you are spoken to, will show that you are paying attention and are engaged in the process.â€? 2. Answer the interview questions with conďŹ dence and clarity “Another common concern that we hear from our clients is that because digital natives communicate so much online, and so are used to being

able to edit what they are about to say before they hit ‘send’, they are sometimes less conďŹ dent and concise when it comes to speaking in front of others. “Employers worry that this will be a hindrance when it comes to speaking in meetings, giving presentations or talking on conference calls. “You can tackle this concern during your interview by answering questions conďŹ dently and clearly. Before your interview, it may help to follow some recommended conďŹ dence boosting steps, such as taking deep breaths, picturing positive outcomes and speaking with your recruiter who can put your mind at rest. “Practice answering common interview questions, and sticking to a structure like the STAR technique (Situation, Task, Action and Result) in

order to keep your response concise and relevant to the question asked. 3. Be responsive in your communications, both before and after the interview “Your interviewer won’t just be assessing your communication skills during the interview itself, advises Nick. “They’ll also be looking at how communicative and responsive you are before and after as well. For instance, they may well consider how quickly you respond to phone calls, and how forthcoming you are in opening up the lines of communication yourself. “So keep your phone close by and be proactive in contacting the interviewer after the interview to thank them for their time and reiterate your interest in the job.

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ SEA-ING RED: Red seaweed, or algae, contains a carbohydrate element crucial to the production of bioplastics and is a clean, biodegradable alternative to fossil fuel plastics.

Could seaweed provide the answer to the plastic problem? right direction, was only half the solution. What’s the problem with plastic, exactly? Australia produces almost three million tonnes of plastic per annum of which less than nine per cent is recycled. Globally, nine billion tonnes of plastics have been produced since the 1950’s. Plastics are made from nonrenewable natural resources such as crude oil, gas and coal. Plastic has remained the most common category of rubbish picked up on Clean Up Australia Day over the last 20 years. Plastics never break down, they just get smaller, - as such they are an enormous contributor to pollution, both during their production, and when they are dumped into landfill or wind up in our waterways. One of the most dangerous elements of plastic waste is

tiny pieces of debris known as microplastics. These are damaging the environment, mostly the ocean, and in much greater amounts than originally thought. A recent study, published by IOP Science shows the number of microplastics has reached up to 51 trillion particles, or 236,000 metric tonnes, globally. These tiny particles can end up in people’s stomachs via drinking water or eating seafood, which could present health risks. From this, two conclusions can be drawn. First, the use of plastic has an enormous negative impact on not only the globe, but our own bodies. And second, modern civilisation is intrinsically wedded to the use of plastics, and while statistic citing, head shaking and hash tagging has a nominal impact, to actually do

something about this problem requires a radical alternative solution. And that solution might well be bioplastics. Enter Indonesia, an unlikely potential saviour Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world and twothirds of its territory is water. It is also the world’s largest producer of red seaweed, whose carbohydrate element is the key ingredient for bioplastics. A recent report suggests that Indonesia is a highly suitable place for red seaweed farming due to its climate, nutrients and geographical conditions. Indonesia is also one step ahead of other countries in developing seaweed-based plastics. Indonesian startup Evoware has invented cups, food containers, and packaging made from farmed seaweeds and

sold them commercially. This seaweed-based packaging - which is biodegradable and chemical-free - can be dissolved in warm water, and has a two-year shelf life without preservatives. The cups and containers can even be flavoured and are edible, such as in the case of Ong Tek Tjan, a retailer who sells ice cream in these seaweed cups which taste like jelly, in flavours like peppermint and green tea. The 25 year old founder of Evoware, David Christian, told Prestige Magazine: “Our mission is to create innovative solutions from seaweed to solve the plastic waste issue while increasing the livelihood of Indonesia’s seaweed farmers. “The idea came up when I was back in Indonesia in 2015 after living in Vancouver for four years. “I realised Jakarta’s air pollution was harmful, it affected my health.

“In the same year, US plastics researcher Jenna Jambeck declared that Indonesia was the world’s secondlargest contributor of plastic waste to the oceans. “We have to change the way we use plastic and we have to start it now.” Seaweed bioplastics also have a significant advantage over other plant based bioplastics - since they are grown offshore, they don’t compete for farming land, and won’t impact agricultural production of food. By using seaweed for bioplastics, the production of agricultural commodities for food will remain intact, so no food price hikes nor food crisis will occur. I must say, I’ve never felt this enthusiastic about seaweed before. Sources: 2016-17 Australian Plastics Recycling Survey https://plasticfreesea.com.au.

MUCH has been made of the recent move by our supermarket giants to eradicate single use plastic bags in a bid to be more environmentally conscious by reducing the toll on landfill, our waterways and coastline. While most people believed the move was a positive and necessary step, roughly 20 percent of shoppers opposed the ban to some degree, and roughly half believed that needing to carry one’s own bags to the supermarket, or purchase reusable bags, would be inconvenient. For my part, considering both our big supermarket giants handed out roughly 3.2 billion bags each per year prior to the ban, and most of those wound up in landfill, the need to do something about such figures was a forgone conclusion. But I also feel that banning these bags, while a step in the

Immerse yourself in the world of The Doctor CHANNEL CHAT SHOW: Doctor Who CHANNEL: ABC or catch-up on iview TIME: 6pm, Monday

with SIMONE KERWIN TOM Baker’s scarf-wrapped incarnation of The Doctor is part of the wallpaper of my early childhood memory. However, apart from vague recollections of battles with Daleks, I didn’t become really immersed in the world of Doctor Who until my 11 year old son launched into the back catalogue of the re-booted series this year. After a 15 year hiatus, the

show returned to the screen in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston as time lord The Doctor, and from his episodes through to those starring David Tennant, Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi, we have worked our way through 10 seasons during 2018. This express education in all things Doctor Who – from sonic screwdrivers to the T.A.R.D.I.S., from weeping angels to cyber-

◆ SMOOTH TRANSITION: Jodie Whittaker is the regenerated face of The Doctor in season 11 of the British series’ re-boot.

men – has been well-timed to enable us to take in the latest regeneration of The Doctor, in the form of Jodie Whittaker. And the first three episodes of series 11, with Whittaker as the 13th Doctor, have been well worth the immersion. Much was made in lead-up publicity of the transition to a female Doctor for this series,

but it speaks volumes about the nature of the current generation that the kids didn’t bat an eyelid with the change from “a grey-haired Scotsman” to a blonde Englishwoman. Whittaker’s Doctor is as funny, witty, and generally crazy as her predecessors, and a couple of mentions of the change in gender were perfectly subtle. Her companions – always a key aspect of the series – present some likeable personalities to bounce off the hyperactive Doctor, with Graham an early fan favourite. Even if you haven’t done the research our household has for this season, it’s a great jumping off point for newcomers. And if you’re completely bamboozled, Rove McManus’

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS: Young Sheldon (Nine, Tuesday, 7.30pm): New episodes of this series, which fills in the back story of Dr Sheldon Cooper, letting viewers know what shaped him. Big Bang Theory (Nine, Tuesday, 8.30pm): Follow-up Young Sheldon with Married Sheldon in what will be the final season of this popular US sit-com, as we follow Sheldon and Amy into married life. This is Us (Eleven, Thursday, 9.30pm): The Pearsons are back! It will be fascinating to see how the series progresses to show us different aspects of the family, going back in time to Jack’s stint in Vietnam, and forward to Tess as an adult social worker.

companion show (pardon the pun), Whovians (7.30pm Monday, ABC Comedy) makes you realise that not everything in this show is meant to be understood. For me, the best episodes of Doctor Who are the ones fea-

turing actual historical figures and events, so, as with the ABC’s Horrible Histories, there is an element of education for young viewers. I can’t wait to see where in the world, and in history, the 13th Doctor takes us.
