Pet lizard sparks lifelong passion
◆ THE SNAKE CHARMER: Jeff Davies has had a life time of experience with deadly and dangerous animals.
By NICK SINIS
FOR wildlife controller Jeff Davies, dealing with dangerous snakes and animals isn’t just an everyday job, it’s a way of life. The owner of North East Wildlife Control has had an adrenaline fuelled career spanning more than 40 years, with his interest in wildlife beginning at a young age. “It all started with a blue tongue lizard and just grew from there,” he said. “I had one then got a second one and the collection just grew...I had 15 tortoises at one stage. “I got involved with snake catching in NSW and in those days it was voluntary, and then got involved with wildlife rescue.”

Keeping and caring for backyard hens
KEEPING backyard hens (or chickens) is becoming increasingly popular in Australia. Layer hens are social and inquisitive animals who enjoy the company of other hens so keeping at least three chickens will give them enjoyment. When making the decision to keep hens, it’s important to make sure they have a comfortable, clean and secure house that protects them from weather and predators. Henhouses (or coops) bought from stores are usually wooden or metal enclosures but you can build your own, providing it’s big enough to give your chickens plenty of space with both an inside and outside area. The indoor area should provide hens with shelter and room to sleep, roost on perches and lay their eggs in nest boxes. When outdoors, hens need plenty of shade and space to scratch, forage and dustbathe. Your henhouse should be regularly cleaned so when choosing a type of house make sure it can be easily cleaned. An essential part of keeping your backyard hens healthy is feeding them a complete and well balanced diet. Layer hens are omnivores so they can enjoy a varied diet of seeds, grains, leaves, fruit, vegetables and insects. To ensure your chickens get all the nutrients they need, a good quality commercial poultry feed should make

with Knowledgebase - RSPCA up the main part of their diet. In addition, your hens can be given a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables daily. Never feed your hens fatty, salty or spoiled food scraps. They also shouldn’t eat specific foods like potato, avocado, chocolate, citrus fruit, uncooked beans, onion, garlic or uncooked rice. Depending on your hens’ age, breed and size, the feed type and amount they require will differ. To make sure you’re feeding your hens correctly, it’s important to check with a veterinarian or get in contact with your local poultry association or local poultry fancier’s society. When layer hens are not provided adequate enrichment, they can develop problem behaviours like feather pecking or bullying of other birds. Enrichment will mentally stimulate your hens and provide them opportunities to perform natural behaviours. Cleaning their house, providing food treats or fruit and vegetables, handling them or letting them roam in the garden will help. Your hens should be wormed regularly and should be checked daily for any changes in their health or signs of wounds, feather loss, scaly legs or parasites (such as mites or lice).

◆ ALONG THE ROAD: Drooping Mistletoe on the Murray Valley Highway. ◆ MISTLETOE BIRD: (Inset) Occupying an ecological niche.
The ecological function of Mistletoe SOME trees, particularly lone remnant paddock trees and those along the verges of highways often carry many Mistletoes. This is a significant change since European settlement when mistletoes were lightly distributed on trees at the edges of forests. The increased occurrence of Mistletoes is because of extensive land clearing. Mistletoes are parasites. The Mistletoe Bird which deposits Mistletoe seeds via its droppings on branches is a forest-edge specialist. In the mistaken belief that Mistletoes caused the death of trees, it used to be accepted practice for farmers to remove Mistletoes from paddock trees and shoot Mistletoe Birds. Nowadays, revegetation to create biological diversity and healthy soils is an accepted practice. In Europe, there is just one species of Mistletoe. In Australia there are over 1500 species. In the com-

plex web of life on Australia’s unique land mass, each species has evolved to fill an ecological niche. Specialised Mistletoes occur from mountains to deserts in almost every Australian State. Mistletoes have a very long flowering period. The flowers provide food for honeyeaters in summer when there is not much else available. The moist, sticky fruit is a nutritious food for other birds and mammals, and is a tasty ‘bush tucker’ snack. The leaves and flowers are essential foods for the caterpillars of many butterfly species to complete their life cycle. Caterpillars in turn become food for birds. The sticky Mistletoe seed coat has evolved symbiotically with birds and mammals which deposit it on a branch of a living tree, thus germinating and growing on. Mistletoes attach to their host
via a haustorium. This specialised organ anchors the plant and allows it to draw nutrients and water from the host. Mistletoes can grow rapidly, as they do not photosynthesize. Their leaves are very nutritious and leaf litter under trees with Mistletoe carries a significantly greater microbial, vegetative, insect and animal diversity than those forests without Mistletoes. Australian Plants gardeners have successfully grown Mistletoes from seed on selected host trees. Drooping Mistletoe [Amyema pendula] or Box Mistletoe [Amyema miquelii] will successfully establish on Eucalypts, and on some Acacias. Choose ripe seeds, and ‘plant’ on an actively growing branch. Mistletoes are an important component in the ecological health of our environment. Respect and enjoy them.

This Day in History, 1951 THIS day, a Sunday, marked the opening of a week of festivities for Back to Wangaratta 1951. From the opening event, a Massed Band Festival at the showgrounds, to the final event the following Saturday, former residents of the town went back to their old schools, saw the booming residential developments, saw mushrooming industrial estates where only a few short years before had been open paddocks, and generally marvelled at the changes.
â—† HEALHY SIGNS: We often think of health in physical terms, such as our ďŹ tness, but it is much more than that. How our body recovers from illness, our diet and appetite, mental state and relationships are all important health considerations too.
Signs of being entirely healthy WHAT does health mean? The World Health Organisation (WHO) says health is deďŹ ned as not just absence of disease or sickness but ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing’. These are the guiding principles of naturopathy and today I wanted to explore what this means. Often I hear people say ‘oh I’m very well, I never get colds and us, but geez my hips are sore and I can’t get rid of this cough’. A good way to tell if you are healthy is not that you never get a cold and never get sad - these are normal if transient changes, but that you will recover from these physical and mental setbacks quickly and fully. You should not have an ongoing cough or residual energy loss after a cold, and have the ability to smile and
feel calm again after an emotional setback. Here are some signs of being totally healthy - if you can tick yes to these 90 per cent of the time - that is a pretty good start. snakes that we get in our area are what they call elapid snakes, which are front fanged and highly venomous,” he said. “So people don’t want them around, which is totally understandable, it’s a lot safer to pay us to come deal with them rather trying to kill or dispatch them yourself. “You upset those things you are more than likely going to get bitten.” Apart from the dangerous encounters and close calls, he continues to love all animals with a particular fondness for wombats. “I have a real soft spot for wombats, years ago I had a wombat adopt me, it just turned up after I had come from a weekend away,” he said. “The wombat was just having a bit of a snooze in my garden and turns out it had actually made a home for himself under the house.”

GONE FISHING
TECH & SCIENCE
YouTime
◆ YELLOWBELLY DELIGHT: Lindsay McKenna caught this lovely yellowbelly at Lake Nillahcootie on a live yabby last week.
Slowing going for cod I REALLY wish that I could tell you that the Murray cod are biting like mad, but unfortunately I can’t. In fact, if you are struggling to catch a cod at the moment you are not alone. The Murray cod fishing is very slow right across North East Victoria at the moment - it often is at this time of the year. The water in the Ovens River is quite dirty all the way from the Buckland River junction down to Bundalong. I think it is slowly clearing up around Wangaratta but it is taking a long time. I have had reports of carp being caught on worms at Lake Moodemere this week. I haven’t heard much from Lake Moodemere lately but this week I had two different people telling me about the carp they had caught. I have also had reports of yellowbelly being caught at Lake Nillahcootie including a report from Lindsay McKenna who caught a nice 41cm yellowbelly off the bank last week using a small live yabby as bait. Lindsay had never caught a yellowbelly before and went to Lake Nillahcootie specifically to try and catch one. The trout fishing is quite good at the moment with many trout streams fishing well as the water continues to cool.

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA Even some of the streams that were totally burnt out are already fishing well and showing excellent signs of recovery. There have been some nice trout caught in Mt Beauty in both the Kiewa River and the Mt Beauty pondage, including one of the golden tagged trout that have been stocked by the Victorian Fisheries Authority which netted one lucky angler a $2000 cash reward. While this weekend’s scheduled Ovens River Challenge fishing contest has been postponed until a date yet to be fixed, there are still more golden tagged fish each worth $2000 - to be caught in North East Victorian waters. For those of you that enjoy yabbying as much as I do, things are starting to slow down and empty nets are becoming more common. Yabbies will still continue to bite for a little while in some places, but on the whole they’re already starting to slow down.
◆ THIS TOO SHALL PASS: But in the meantime, thanks to the internet, there are plenty of avenues for self improvement.
The upside of isolation A GLOBAL pandemic. Businesses closed, shops shut down, and streets are empty around the world. And the far-reaching economic and political fallout of all this is only just beginning. It’s a disquieting time. Many of us will be left in isolation, twiddling thumbs in worry and boredom. What to do? What to do? Well ladies and gents, I know that many of you are social creatures who love getting out and mixing with other humans, so take it from a guy who enjoys nothing more than living like a hermit - complete with unkempt appearance, hole ridden robe, and the occasional shout at noisy birds in the backyard - there’s always Youtube. Youtube - the font of all knowledge and the patron of all “Actually, I did try this at home” professionals everywhere. The very first thing I’ll be doing is watching a tutorial on how to set up a
nursery, because amidst all this calamity my partner and I are about to become first time parents. It’s been a joyess time for us, mixed with a lot of aprehension for the short term future, but we know we are going to be fine. And in my downtime, there are plenty of subjects I want to research. Right now, I’m on a bit of a Roman Empire kick. But I’m also brushing up on my mathematics, as it was always something I struggled with in school but now have the patience to study - and I’m actually really enjoying it. For those interested, there’s a great channel on Youtube called “tecmath”. They explain how to solve just about every equation you can think of, and they do it in a really easy to digest way. Another excellent channel is “Crash Course”. Crash Course is divided into a variety of mini series from literature, to history, to political science and
The North East is open for Business. Make your next purchase, weekend away or day trip a local one. Your local communities and businesses NEED YOU NOW.
each series I’ve watched, despite the name, gives you a pretty comprehensive understanding of a given subject. Beyond Youtube, there’s the actual online learning websites like Udemy. When on special, which is most of the time, the courses are dirt cheap, and you can download and watch the video tutorials any time you please. Recently I thought I’d try my hand at learning Unity - a video game engine - and quickly realised I needed to learn a bit more about the coding language C# while I was at it. The point being, when we have very little option but to stay at home, the upside is there is plenty of room for self improvement. And it doesn’t matter what your particular interest is, you can find ‘how to’ resources online for it. At the time of writing this article, I’m unsure if my column will be appearing again next week. If that is the case, stay safe dear readers, and I’ll catch you on the other side of this.
