FOCUS and hard work have not only meant a Commonwealth Games slot for Rutherglen’s Gaye Shale – they have helped shape her approach to life. The mother of three will represent Australia in July at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in women’s double trap shooting, and the journey to reach the elite sporting level has been a long one. “It was an ambition of mine to represent Australia in the Commonwealth Games since I was 19, and now it’s a reality,” the 45 year old said. “My children are really proud of me, and have been amazingly supportive of my hectic training and competition schedule. “I hope that in the example of my determination in pursuing my dreams, they will also strive to follow theirs.” Gaye lost her husband Jerome in a tragic farm accident in 2001, leaving her with the responsibility of a farm, a bakery and their three children. The couple met as teenagers and both competed as sporting shooters, and Jerome always encouraged his sweetheart to nurture her talent. “He said, ‘you’re good enough to make it in the Australian team’,” Gaye said. “He was a really good shot in his own right. “Both of us could have done really well.” continued page |

Caffeine consumption
Photinia or bust
WITH BELINDA MCPHERSON BHSci., NATUROPATH
MY photinias have been in the ground for four years. These lovely small trees feature attractive, deep red new tip growth in spring and as they mature, change to a glossy dark green. Photinias have clusters of white flowers in spring which contrast well against the green and red foliage. They are great hedging plants, which is the reason I planted mine. What was supposed to be a beautiful hedge has once again been decimated. The hedge should be about one metre high and thick and lush after being feed regularly and mulched. But alas no, it has been eaten. After surviving drought and flooding rains, what is the downfall of my anticipated hedge? Not pests or diseases of the botanical kind, but pests of the four legged variety, not once but four times now. The cow decided to sample the hedge in the first year reducing the plants to sticks. Due to the mulch, regular fertilising and watering they survived and put on healthy new spring growth. In the second year, our newly acquired sheep escaped their
IN MODERATION: Keep a close eye on your caffeine intake.
- Caffeine is a diuretic robbing your body of water soluble nutrients such as magnesium and B Vitamins. These vitamins are important in making energy and healthy nervous system function. - If you “must have” coffee to start or continue your day you may be lacking certain nutrients or vitamins that are needed to produce energy. - Caffeine can be addictive so withdrawing it from your diet cold turkey can result in some side effects such as sleep disturbances,
heightened anxiety, headache and fatigue. - Caffeine reduces absorption of important minerals such as iron. Alternative suggestions to coffee: chai tea, hot raw cocoa (you can also add maca powder), dandelion tea and smoothies. Keep your caffeine consumption to one cup a day, enjoy it and hydrate before and after with herbal teas and fresh pure water. Seek help from your local naturopath to make some changes to your diet and lifestyle to balance your health today.

paddock and proceeded to munch on the nearest edible produce, which was the recovering hedge. Next, came a full on attack from some roaming goats - not mine who discovered the free photinia menu and proceeded to eat over half of each bush. They were promptly rounded up and taken away by the local animal ranger, much to my relief. The final blow was this week, the increasing flock of sheep had escaped yet again and feasted, unattended on a vast variety of plants, especially the photinia hedge. Twenty plants that were supposed to grow into a 20 metre long hedge for privacy and to screen an ugly shed were this time reduced to twigs, with no foliage left at all. The soil, aspect and site are suited to growing these spectacular tough plants. With the onset of spring, they will once again produce lush, new red growth and start the process of growing into a hedge. The morale of this story is to try, try and try again. Happy gardening!

WE have all heard it before; life is about balance and eating/ drinking in moderation. Coffee or caffeine is no different. Low to moderate consumption of coffee in healthy individuals as part of a healthy lifestyle in some studies has been shown to have some health benefits. This consumption does not include coffee with loads of empty calories in the form of milk or additives such as flavorings and sugars. The following people should avoid excessive coffee consumption: stress related illnesses, such as adrenal fatigue, sleep disturbances, headaches, heart palpitations, elevated blood pressure and anxiety, gut issues such as IBD, constipation, autoimmune conditions and those who are trying to conceive or are pregnant. Some facts about caffeine: - Caffeine can increase stress hormones (like cortisol) exacerbating people with the above symptoms as well as contributing to weight gain via hormonal responses and empty calories from excessive amounts of milk.

FAMILY MATTERS: Gaye Shale (far left) cherishes the close relationship she has with her children Demi, Kacey and Adam.
Gaye said watching the shooting at the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games in 2002 helped renew her passion for the sport, but it was another few years before she was able to compete. She loves shooting because it requires concentration, focus and consistency, and helps remove her mind from everyday stresses. “It’s a sport I compare to golf, as you’re doing the same thing over and over again consistently,” she said. “It’s just you and the target… you’re basically beating yourself each time. “It’s sort of like meditation for me.” Currently training up to three times a week in Melbourne, Gaye cannot disguise her excitement for the upcoming Games.
“I’m looking forward to taking it all in,” she said. “Representing your country is a dream come true. “It’s not easy doing it…it’s just a matter of not giving up.” Gaye said she is constantly humbled by the support shown not only by her family, but also the Rutherglen and district community. “They’ve been fantastic,” she said, noting each of her kids have also competed in shooting at various levels, with son Adam having also shot at a national level, and in 2012 the pair both competed at national titles in New Zealand. Those wishing to keep up with Gaye’s sporting efforts can follow her on Facebook by searching for Gaye 2 Glasgow or follow her on Twitter under the handle @ Gaye2Glasgow.
POLYPHAGIA, or increased food intake, has a number of potential causes including behavioral problems, medical conditions or in some cases it is a normal occurrence. Conditions that hamper or prevent digestion and absorption in the gastrointestinal tract will cause the animal to lose calories and nutrients in their faeces. Animals will often be underweight, despite always being hungry and eating large amounts, as their body is not getting enough energy. Conditions causing maldigestion and malabsorption include exocrine pancreatic insufficiency or infiltrative bowel diseases. When the body is not using the available nutrients the animal will again appear ravenous. They too, as with maldigestion, may be underweight. Gastrointestinal parasites, such as worms, and metabolic conditions including diabetes mellitus may cause this presentation. If the animal’s body has an
packaging to assist with calculating the appropriate amount to feed. When excessive eating is occurring with concurrent weight loss or excessive drinking potential underlying conditions need to be investigated. Contact your local veterinarian if you are concerned about your animal’s eating habits. Felicity Miller BVSci, Wangaratta Veterinary Clinic.

increased metabolic rate, they will require more calories than a normal healthy animal. This is a normal occurrence in late pregnancy, lactation, growing animals or where activity levels are increased as when the energy demands on the animal are high. Abnormal situations where we see an increased metabolic rate include hyperthyroid where the animals produce excess thyroid hormone, stimulating an increased metabolic rate, leading to a hungry and skinny animal. Lastly, eating excessively can be due to behavioral and psychological issues. Common causes include side effects of particular medications or competitive behavior between animals. In some cases owners may not be feeding the required amount for the animal and the pet will appear to be eating excessively. They won’t necessarily have increased food intake, unless they get into cupboards, but will eat the provided food ravenously. All dog foods have feeding guidelines printed on their

Dogercise THESE days there are exercise programs especially designed for parents of babies and young children. Which is great because, as any new parent will tell you, between night feeds, day feeds, nappy changes, soothing, bathing and the odd bit of housework, there’s not a lot of time to worry about your own health and well-being. But it’s important that we do, because if the main carer goes down, everyone suffers. Remember the old saying, “Happy Wife, Happy Life”? Well it still rings true today. Mums need to nurture themselves too – not only for themselves, but for their families too. And so, this industry of new ‘mum-specific’ exercise programs is booming. Not in the least because many of them encourage the mums to bring the children along. Sometimes the babies and toddlers are physically utilised as ‘dumbbells’ and their prams are used for resistance and cardio training. This set up is great on two counts: a), you don’t have to pay for childcare and b) your children get to see you being active, which is great role-modelling. So what’s made me think about all this? Well, you see I’ve recently added a physiotherapist to my stable of ‘health professionals’ (he joins my chiropractor, my podiatrist, my GP and my hairdresser, the latter perhaps not being so much a ‘health’ professional as a ‘mental health’ professional because she knows how anxious and demented I become when I start seeing grey hairs.) Well, anyway, I’ve decided if I’m to live in this body for maybe (with luck) another thirty years or so, I’d best do some ‘renovations’. So off to the physio I went as it occurred to me that, if I’m hobbling and groaning when I get out of bed each day at THIS age, what will I be like when I’m ….like….40 (he he)? The physio sent me home with some stretching exercises which I’ve been attempting to do this week but let’s just say, even without babies, toddlers or night feeds, it’s had its challenges - for example:
BY CATHERINE WARNOCK I’m lying on my stomach on the floor attempting to do some push-up style stretches. With every upward thrust – a hairy, doggy little face is micro-millimetres from mine and on Thrust No. 6, Moses finally manages to sneak in a mucky chin-lick. Eeew. I splutter and push him aside before rolling onto my side for the next exercise. It’s called “The Archer”; you point both hands to the side, then draw one backwards as if you are about to fire an arrow (as one often does, in 21st century, urban life). I manage to execute a few of these backward draws quite skilfully (Robin Hood eat your heart out) until, out of nowhere the Scruffy Dawg launches himself awkwardly - and rather heavily - across my person, effectively winding me and possibly cracking a rib in the process. He seems not to notice that I’m in some discomfort as he playfully attacks my ‘arrowdrawing’ hand. Clearly, he’s on for a game, despite the fact that for the past few days he’s been suffering his own debilitation (he’s just been diagnosed with cruciate ligament problems). Apparently, he’s forgotten he’s supposed to be limping. Anyway, instead of getting up and putting the dogs out, as a normal person might do, I continue my attempts at exercising. The dogs are having a great time being shoved back and forth as I fling my trusty arrow. When I roll back over to do some more push ups, Moses helpfully positions his chubby little self on my back. It’s at this point, I get an idea. Maybe I could use these meddling mutts to my advantage? Maybe, like the New Mums, I could incorporate them into my exercise program? This thought lasts about ten seconds until I receive another mucky face-lick. “Nah” I decide and put the dogs outside so I can get some peace. Unlike the mums and bubs, at least I always have that option. Bonus!

WITH ANITA McPHERSON perfect choice to help fire up your furnace, and Politini’s liqueur tawny is an ideal, fruit-filled heart starter. Its bouquet is rich and berry filled with a hint of rum and raisin chocolate, and the flavor is long, lingering and earthy, with the sweetness of ripe cherry and wild blackberry. I’d suggest indulging at the end of the evening when it’s almost time for bed, but you could also serve it up to friends with the best chocolate you can find and call it dessert. And the very contemporary slim-line bottle shows this sweet thing off to its best advantage. Search for it at local stockists or try www.politiniwines.com.au

Escaped prisoner, 1942 ON this day in 1942, with an alert out for an escaped prisoner from the Murchison POW camp, Mrs D Oates of Wangaratta had a mysterious night caller at her Mackay Street residence. Mrs Oates called the police, who arrived and
showed her a photo of the escapee, who was one Lieutenant Edgardo Simoni. Given some hope by the householder that her caller could have been Simoni, the police conducted a manhunt, and finally arrested – not the POW escapee – but an ordinary tramp.

WHEN I was young and sick my mum would ask what I felt like to eat, this was a sure favorite of mine, and mum knew I was starting to feel better when I polished off two or three of these cabbage rolls. There are lots of different versions of cabbage roll recipes out there, but I always go back to mum’s recipe as its easy and everything is on hand in the pantry or at the supermarket. Method In a bowl mix mince, onion, rice, salt and pepper. Bring a large pot of water to the boil, gently peel the cabbage leaves off in whole lots (some do tear a bit) about 12 to 15 leaves. Boil whole leaves 5 or 6 at a time for 5 minutes or until soft enough to roll, place in cold water to stop the cooking process, dry on a tea towel or kitchen paper.

IT was a case of déjà vu when I wandered down the street the other day and noticed knee length jumper dresses in a shop window. It took me back to a dark time decades ago when they were popular, and mine was coveted by friends because of its “starsky jacket” banding. I only wore it once; not because I was a precious fashion diva, but because what seemed like a great idea in concept was flawed in its design. The garment was insufferably hot and itchy, so unless you were planning an arctic expedition, there was no where you could go without desperately wanting to get it off. And it clinged to your body in an unflattering way, like some kind of weird woolly sausage casing. It’s not a way I plan to keep warm this winter, but there is another retro heart warmer I’ll happily slip into. Fortified wines are the

MONEY MATTERS
BUSINESS AND FINANCE
Credit for worthy customers WITH the move in Australia to comprehensive credit reporting, has the time come for all to enjoy an interest rate based on your personal credit score? Already we have seen some lenders prepared to vary the interest rate on your loan according to your credit score. SocietyOne is the first provider to throw down the gauntlet to others by moving to a model where interest rates are tailored to match the creditworthiness of the applicant, offering people deemed more creditworthy a better deal than those with a couple of strikes against them. Risk based lending, as it is called, became possible in Australia after we joined the rest of the developed world in moving to a comprehensive credit reporting model in March. Before the change, very little detail was held about your credit history, with only missed payments and bankruptcies. But now, your monthly payment history on loans and missed payments of more than five days will be on record. Veda is the only credit agency in Australia so far to provide individual scoring of credit as a result to the move to comprehensive reporting. Their top score is 1200, with an average score of 749. Using this method, an applicant with a score of 200 means they have a 50 per cent chance of having an “adverse credit event” within the next year. SocietyOne is the first provider to be using VedaScore to place loan applications into four categories, where they assess credit files and bank statements to further tailor the loan to the creditworthiness of the applicant.
Streamlined online tax THIS tax time, more than 1.4 million taxpayers will have access to the ATO’s new myTax service , which is expected to slash the time and effort it takes to complete your tax return. “MyTax is a new streamlined online tax return designed specifically for people with straightforward tax affairs,” Deputy Commissioner Steve Vesperman said. “We know people want their tax to be as effortless as possible. “MyTax allows you to lodge your return quickly and conveniently on tablets, smart phones and any computer.” MyTax pre-fills your return with information from your previous tax return and with information provided by your bank, employer, government agencies and others. “If you wait until early August, when most of this information is available, myTax will do most of the hard work for you. “With only 10 main screens to review, your tax return will
be easier to complete than ever before,” Mr Vesperman said. “For those with more complex tax affairs, e-tax continues to provide a free, convenient, and secure online lodgment option.” To find out more information on myTax, your eligibility and online lodgment options this year visit www.ato.gov.au/lodgeonline. Online services now available through myGov. ATO online services are now available through myGov. To lodge your tax return online - with either myTax or e-tax - you will need to create a myGov account and link it to the ATO. If you already have a myGov account, simply link the ATO as one of your member services. Once linked to the ATO, you can use your myGov account to manage your tax and superannuation affairs online. You can update your personal details, keep track of your super, arrange to pay a debt and lodge and check the progress of your tax returns.

kclarke@alphalink.com.au Low risk applicants are offered the lowest interest rate, while higher risk candidates are offered higher rates. The Company (SocietyOne) is different from most lenders in that it does not lend the money itself, but sources money from institutional and private investors. They divide the loan into portions and then offer the funding of the loan to investors – and many investors could be contributing to your loan. According to Matt Symons, co-founder of SocietyOn, everyone who qualifies for credit with the big banks tends to pay more or less the same interest rates. Veda spokesperson Belinda Diprose said it is a good idea for consumers to become familiar with their credit report and their VedaScore, because they are going to become more important, seeking better deals from credit providers. “It really puts the power into the hands of consumers rather than lenders,” she said. Consumer advocates always say that it is worth trying to bargain with your lender for a better deal. Should this not be forthcoming then look around for a better deal. Remember also that you are able to obtain for free, a copy of your credit report available from credit agencies. So, don’t be surprised if next time you are looking for finance, your credit provider will have a large dossier on you and your credit history.
