◆ HELPING OTHERS: Jo Brookes enjoys connecting with North East communities in her work as a paramedic community support coordinator in the Upper Hume region. PHOTOS: Kylie Wilson

By KYLIE WILSON A DESIRE to connect to her community drives paramedic Jo Brookes in her role as a paramedic community support coordinator in the Upper Hume region. Jo lives in the Mitta Valley and has recently celebrated 10 years’ service with Ambulance Victoria, commencing as an ambulance community officer with the Mitta Mitta team in 2008. She said she first joined after her family moved to the region from South Gippsland and she was looking for a way to become involved with the local community as well as make friends. After becoming part of the Ambulance Victoria team, she trained and studied to become a paramedic through the Rural Sponsored Degree Program and graduated in 2015. While she began in her new role just this month - which sees her working as a professional paramedic whose work goes beyond the traditional role of responding to emergency cases - she has been working closely with people in rural communities in the North East for many years. In addition to supporting emergency response, a key focus of Jo’s role is working with local health services to provide primary care and training, and supporting local ambulance first responder teams, engaging with many communities across Upper Hume including Mitta Mitta, Chiltern, Bethanga and Walwa. She also liaises with local health organisations so that she knows what health care is already available to small town residents.

Suburban scammers pushing illegal early access to super So far, the ATO has seen promoters targeting people with small to medium super balances, people involved in local community and cultural groups, and those who may not have engaged with their super at all before being approached. If you are approached by someone telling you that you can access your super early, or you hear about it from family, friends or work colleagues: t EP OPU TJHO BOZ EPDVNFOUT t EP OPU QSPWJEF UIFN XJUI any of your personal details t TUPQ BOZ JOWPMWFNFOU XJUI the scheme, organisation or the person who approached you t TFFL BEWJDF GSPN B QSPGFT sional advisor or the ATO. Generally, you can only access your super once you turn 65 or when you reach preservation age and stop working. Currently, in Australia, the preservation age is 55 years old for those born before 1 July 1960. It then increases by one year, every year, up to the maximum of 60 for those born after 30 June 1964. There are some very limited circumstances where you can legally access your super early. Check the Illegal early release of super information on the ATO website and contact them on13 10 20 to report the promoter. The ATO has general information on accessing your super on their website, and you can ďŹ nd out further information about other schemes the ATO has warned about, at Super Scheme Smart.

with Helen van Riet AUSTRALIAN PLANTS SOCIETY (VIC) ◆ GROWING: An eight year old Brachychiton rupestris, developing a ‘bottle’ trunk.

Kurrajongs - a succulent surprise

IN North East Victoria, Brachychiton populneus, the Kurrajong, occurs naturally and it and other Brachychiton species are planted extensively as garden and street trees. There are 31 species of Brachychiton and all except one are native to Australia. Although they are signiďŹ cant trees, Brachychitons are actually succulents. When it rains, the roots transport water to the trunk and it expands. In dry times, the trunk shrinks to conserve precious water. Brachychiton species appear on many lists of ďŹ re-retardant plants. The Kurrajong is the only Brachychiton which is evergreen. It can reach around 20 metres, and grows fairly quickly to form a straight, shapely, tree with lustrous green leaves.

ciduous, and has masses of pinkish red bell owers up to 5cm in diameter which smother the tree in summer. A pink carpet of fallen owers can completely cover the ground below. B. ruprestris (Queensland Bottle Tree) is a curiosity and great garden specimen. The bottle form develops from about 8 years. B. acerifolius (Illawarra Flame Tree) has a spreading crown. Clusters of bell-shaped owers are bright red. Flowering is variable from season to season, and is best following hot dry periods. In good years, trees completely defoliate. Seedlings make good indoor pot plants. Brachychiton species graft easily, and can also be grown from cuttings. Spectacular, smaller-growing grafted Brachychitons include B. Jerilderie Red, B. Bella Donna, B. Beau Bells, and B. Griffith Pink.

It is deep-rooted, but the roots are not invasive. The bell-shaped owers are pinkish cream, and appear in summer. Brachychitons have been an important indigenous food plant. The young roots are tuber-like and can be eaten fresh. Their high water content is valuable when other sources of water are not available. The hard, boat-shaped seed capsule contains pea-sized seeds which can be roasted and eaten. Kurrajong is derived from the traditional language of the Darug and Eora peoples of the Sydney region - ‘garrajuŋ’ = â€œďŹ shing lineâ€?. Fishing lines and nets were made from Kurrajong bark. Brachychitons are all spectacular trees and many are suitable garden plants for our region. B. discolor (Lacebark Tree) is de-

THE Australian Taxation OfďŹ ce (ATO) has become aware of people in some suburban areas attempting to encourage others to illegally access their super early to help them to purchase a car; to pay debts; to take a holiday or to provide money to family overseas in need. Deputy Commissioner James O’Halloran said that the last thing the ATO wants to see is people’s retirement savings being put at risk by unscrupulous promoters. “Attempting to access your super early in this way is illegal, and people need to be aware of the ďŹ nancial dangers of falling prey to these promoters. “These people could cost you a big part of your hard-earned retirement savings.â€? The ATO has seen evidence of promoters promising that they can organise access to super (for a fee). They ask people to ďŹ ll out blank forms and provide identity documentation, while assuring people that these arrangements are legitimate.

FEATURE STORY

Caring for your chooks CHOOKS in the backyard make great pets and they are very useful at providing fresh eggs - here are some tips to keep them healthy. Chooks will just about eat anything, but it is important to feed a balanced pellets or grain mix as the main part of their diet. In addition to this, all those food scraps you would normally throw away can be fed to the chickens, but just remember that coffee, avocado and chocolate can be toxic so avoid these. During the day it is ďŹ ne to let chickens scratch around in the back yard, but remember wherever you live, predators such as foxes, birds of prey and dogs can attack chickens, so they need to have a secure shed or pen for their safety. The pen should contain perches, nesting boxes and plenty of clean fresh water. There are many breeds of chickens available: some types are very large and some are small (bantams); there are laying breeds such as Isa Browns and also meat breeds which are heavier birds that are suitable to eat; meat breeds do not lay as many eggs and have a more

with Dr Annette Kelleher, BVsc VETERINARIAN seasonal laying pattern than the egg laying breeds. It is important to remember that when you live in town, it is usually ďŹ ne to have hens, however roosters can be very noisy and upset the neighbors when they crow ďŹ rst thing in the morning and sometimes the local council has restrictions on where roosters can be kept and also how many birds you can have in a built up area. Roosters can also be quite aggressive, so care should be taken when keeping them. Chickens are quite prone to parasites such as worms, mites, lice and ticks. Your local vet can provide advice on treating these problems but remember if you are consuming the eggs or eating the birds, then with holding periods must be observed. Chickens can be prone to lots of other illnesses that can be transmitted by wild birds so if you notice any abnormalities, ring your local vet.

VET CORNER THIS week’s pet of the week at Wangaratta RSPCA is Princess, a four and a half year old domestic shorthair female cat who is black and white in colour. To see more animals up for adoption at the Wangaratta RSPCA, visit the shelter in Connell Street or phone (03) 5722 2874.

â—† COLLEAGUES: Natarsha Canny, the paramedic community support coordinator for Southern Hume, chats with Jo Brookes.

Ensuring healthy communities

Criss-crossing the region, she has met with various community organisations - from parent groups and schools to people at Men’s Sheds. Over time, Jo has educated community groups and members of the public about CPR, the correct use of deďŹ brillators, and other forms of ďŹ rst aid, so when an emergency happens, “people aren’t so overwhelmed with what is occurringâ€?. “I provide education and whatever they want to know,â€? she said. “It helps build community resilience and preparedness for medical emergencies. “I love to get out there and see communities. “I want to listen to people.â€? Jo said she was proud of the work that she had done with local commu-

nities over the years, in places where health services can be located up to an hour away. “The most rewarding thing for me is seeing what these ďŹ rst response teams can achieve, seeing them work as a team and putting their training into action,â€? she said. Jo added that while all the small communities she deals with have their own health response systems in place to deal with the health risks most pertinent to their community, Chiltern is well served by their long running Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteers. Southern Hume counterpart Natarsha Canny, who is based in Alexandra and works with a number of small communities in the region, including Marysville, Eildon and Woods Point, said she

also ďŹ nds fulďŹ lment in helping people in her area. “For me, it’s really nice to come back to your own community,â€? Natarsha said. “We’ve both got a passion for the community,â€? Jo added, while Natarsha said, “it’s why we went for this jobâ€?. When not working, Jo said she loves to spend time with family, working on her farm and volunteering in her community, especially at her local school and football club. “I have a very strong sense of community, and understand the commitment that volunteers show when taking on roles within their communities,â€? Jo said. “I am also passionate about enhancing the availability of emergency services capability and continually improving health outcomes in rural areas.â€?

Competition heating up across the mountains as winter peaks WHETHER you enjoy honing your skills or watching skilled sportspeople compete, there is plenty going on at local snow destinations at the moment. At Falls Creek, you can see the beauty of the mountain by moonlight this Saturday with a Moonlight Tour, or you can escape the cold and watch short films on Sunday as part of Mountainfilm on Tour. There will also be action aplenty at the Australian Police Winter Games, which kick off on Monday, July 30 and include social events, skiing and snowboarding races, and more. At Mt Hotham, talented women will rip up the slopes this weekend as part of the Women’s Snowboard Shred Session, an intensive weekend clinic led by female instructors.

From July 28-31, Mt Hotham will also play host to the SSA Futures Camp and SSA Grom SBX Championship, and the FIS Australia New Zealand Cup (ANC) SBX will hold their first and second races, so there will be action aplenty on mountain. Meanwhile, this Friday will see Fox FM presenters broadcasting live from the ABOM at Mt Buller. At Mt Buffalo, conditions are great for tobogganing, cross country skiing, snow shoeing or simple snow play. See the Parks Victoria snow reports outlining conditions and chain requirements at ski hires in the valley below and also on the Mount Buffalo Ski School Facebook page. Whatever mountain you’re visiting, keep an eye on snow cams or ask at

your local ski hire business or tourism information centre to find out current snow levels, snow chain fitting advice, and weather at resorts around the area.

with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson and Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) â—† REST UP: Adequate rest is a key ingredient in recovery from glandular fever

Glandular fever recovery

GLANDULAR fever (GF) is a virus that often affects young adults. Initially someone with glandular fever will feel tired, have a sore throat, enlarged tonsils and probably lose their appetite. This virus is easily tested for on a blood test, and the most common advice is to stop and rest until you feel better. This is definitely important, but sometimes it can still take months of resting for an improvement to occur. Natural medicines are very effective at treating this kind of virus, and for the most part, the naturopath will work on a convalescent type approach, which is supportive to bed rest, but allows the body to respond faster and recover more fully.

Naturopath’s top 5 tips for glandular fever recovery: Prescription of herbs and nutrients: these ďŹ ght the virus, support the drainage of the glands and rebuild energy. YEP tea – yarrow, elder and peppermint - is great for the symptoms and fever of glandular fever. Increase foods to support the appetite: This is really important because if you don’t eat enough you will be tired and you won’t have enough nutrients to allow the immune system to do its job effectively. Increase ginger, chicken soups, hot lemon and honey tea, spicy pumpkin soup and fresh juices with beetroot, carrot and celery as well as red meat stews. Eliminate foods that compromise the immune system: sugar, fatty foods, caffeine and reďŹ ned white carbohydrates all

deplete the immune system and make recovery slow. It is important to avoid these foods until you are completely recovered. Support the liver: Glandular fever is a virus that lies dormant in the liver and progresses to the throat when you are run down. To protect your liver from the virus, increase the above herbs, foods and nutrients. Continue to rest even once you feel your energy returning and follow up with a stress management plan. The main reasons we see GF relapsing, is because someone has not managed their stress well or has hit the exercise too fast, too soon. We can work with you to devise a program that supports your exercise and lifestyle needs, at the right time.

ALMOST three-quarters (73 per cent) of Australian workers would like a job offering exible work practices, with career progression opportunities (72 per cent) and ongoing learning and development (59 per cent) also important when job searching, according to a survey by recruiting experts Hays. These rank ahead of more than 20 days’ annual leave (28 per cent), health and wellness programs (15 per cent), ďŹ nancial support for study (12 per cent) and payment of usage charges for employee-owned devices at work (8 per cent). As for the beneďŹ ts employees say they receive, 70 per cent get exible work practices, 56 per cent ongoing learning and development and 45 per cent career progression opportunities. Less popular offerings are health and wellness programs (36 per cent), over 20 days’ annual leave (32 per cent), ďŹ nancial support for study (30 per cent), payment of usage charges for employee-owned devices at work (25 per cent), free or subsidised food (20 per cent), a day off for your birthday (seven per cent) and onsite childcare (three per cent). “With salary increases set to be even more restrained this year, the beneďŹ ts an organisation offers will help to attract and retain top talent, particularly if they support career advancement,â€? says Nick Deligiannis, managing director of Hays in Australia and New Zealand. Flexible work practices is the number one beneďŹ t professionals want (73 per cent) and receive (70 per cent), but just 45 per cent of employees are ‘very satisďŹ ed’ or ‘extremely satisďŹ ed’ with their current level of work-life balance. “An organisation that doesn’t offer exible working options is now in the minority and this has an obvious impact on attraction and retention,â€? says Nick.

TECH & SCIENCE with Chris Febvre, NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au â—† NUKE IT: The ďŹ rst domestic microwave, introduced in Chicago in 1967, was installed by a home-economist who then cooked the customer’s ďŹ rst meal - they don’t make them them like they use to.

Of melted chocolate bars, magnetrons, and the microwave IF you’re anything like me, and your culinary expertise extends to ‘not always burning toast’, there’s a fair chance you’d be completely lost without a microwave oven to heat up your meals. Frozen meals, pizza pockets, popcorn, legs of lamb, vegetables - just ‘chuck ‘em in the microwave’ and you’re good to go. Okay, you won’t be winning MasterChef any time soon, but whatever you heat up is edible, for the most part. The point is, without this trusty appliance, our lives would be a whole lot less convenient, and probably involve a lot more third degree burns. But where did this miraculous innovation come from? To whom must we bachelors prostrate ourselves in endless appreciation and awe for our daily sustenance? That honour goes to an esteemed engineer by the name of Percy Spencer, a curiously melted chocolate bar

in his pocket, and the surely dangerous levels of exposure to radiation he unknowingly subjected himself to - all in the name of science...and food. In fact, the microwave oven we know today was invented by happy accident. Percy’s journey to become the inventor of the microwave began when he was very young. He grew up poor at the turn of the 20th century in the rural area of Howland, Maine, USA. Mr Percy’s parents passed away when he was very young, and by the age of 12 he was the head of his family and began working at a spool factory. He quickly became a skilled machinist, and - when the factory was converted to electrical power - a 16 year old Percy was one of three men who signed up to outďŹ t the factory with the new source of power. A remarkable feat consid-

ering he had no real formal education nor prior training. By the time the factory was fully operational, Percy had become a competent electrician. Inspired by the heroism of the wireless operators who sought to save passengers during the sinking of the Titanic, Percy joined the Navy during the First World War and learned wireless telegraphy. Once again, he received little in the way of training, instead teaching himself what he needed to know during the long hours of the night while he stood watch. After World War I, Percy landed a job at the newlyestablished American Appliance Company, co-founded by engineer Vannevar Bush, who today is most known for organising the Manhattan Project and predicting many of the innovations that led to the computer revolution and the internet.

In 1925, the company changed its name to Raytheon Manufacturing. Percy became one of Raytheon’s most valued and wellknown engineers. During World War II, while Raytheon was working on improving radar technology for Allied forces, Percy was the company’s go-to problem solver. He earned several patents while working on more efďŹ cient and effective ways to mass-produce radar magnetrons. A radar magnetron is a type of electric whistle that instead of creating vibrating sound creates vibrating electromagnetic waves. When ďŹ rst developed, Raytheon was only able to create 100 magnetrons per day, due to the precision of construction required. And so, Percy developed a new method of construction - one that involved multiple copper and silver plates

that could be bored out by machines and stacked on top of each other before being fused together in an oven. This, and other innovations by Percy, meant that Raytheon were able to produce upward of 2500 units per day, an achievement for which the Navy awarded Spencer the Distinguished Public Service Award. After the Second World War, Percy was observing one of the magnetrons and noticed that the chocolate bar in his pocket had melted rapidly. This was the catalyst for further experimentation. He then observed as popcorn kernels quickly popped when placed close to the magnetron, and eggs exploded. It was then that Percy knew he had something great on his hands. In 1946, Raytheon produced the ďŹ rst commercial microwave ovens. These behemoths were

the size of a refrigerator and required plumbing as they were water cooled. But by 1967 Raytheon had perfected the engineering of microwave ovens to the extent that they were able to mass produce smaller, domestic versions of the oven. The microwave was such a revolutionary technological step that Raytheon hired a team of home economists to install the ovens in people’s homes and cook their ďŹ rst meal for them. These home economists were available 24 hours a day for the ďŹ rst year after the launch of the product. They certainly don’t make customer service like they use to. So the next time you’re nuking your meal, spare a thought for Percy Spencer and his melted chocolate bar. Because, let’s face it, without him, we’d spend more time setting off smoke alarms than actually eating anything.

Experience a different kind of ‘reality’ TV CHANNEL CHAT

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS:

SHOW: Wellington Paranormal CHANNEL: SBS Viceland TIME: Tuesdays, with FREYJA POSTLETHWAITE 9.25pm TAIKA Waititi and Jemaine Clement are comic geniuses and, whether you know it or not, you’ve most likely enjoyed their work. Their individual and joint bodies of work include the effortless comedy in Thor: Ragnarok and the stupid hilarity in mockumentary film What We Do in the Shadows and in legendary series Flight of the Concords. So it’s no surprise that, after just watching the teaser trailer

of Wellington Paranormal, I cannot wait to sink my teeth into it. We are being blessed with a double episode premier of the show and I have every faith that even that won’t be enough. The show is set to be a spin-off from What We Do in the Shadows, which followed the lives of vampires living in a share house together. Police officers Mike Minogue and Karen O’Leary, who

◆ SPOOKS: Taika Waititi (pictured) and Jemaine Clement’s most recent comedy, Wellington Paranormal, is a promising watch.

were hypnotised in a ridiculous scene in the film, are featured in Wellington Paranormal as members of a special police paranormal unit. They are under the watchful eye of Maaka Pohatu and together try to address the issue of a paranormal crime epi-

You Can’t Ask That (ABC, 9pm, Wednesdays) Groups of misunderstood or marginalised Australians answer many inappropriate, uncomfortable and often offensive questions some are too afraid to ask, turning the concept of “political correctness gone mad” on its head. Frasier (Eleven, 6pm, weeknights) I used to hate this show when my parents would binge it before binging was cool, but now I’ve rediscovered it and think I just didn’t like it because my parents did. It’s quality viewing if you can handle neurotic main characters. Gender Revolution with Katie Couric (SBS Viceland, Thursday, 9pm) Katie Couric talks with scientists, physicians and other experts about gender and gender identity in an effort to provide a deeper understanding on how science, culture and society influences gender.

demic in Wellington. What We Do in the Shadows delivered more spit-water-outyour-nose laughter moments than I care to admit, and - given the series is born from the same wavelength of ideas - I’m excited for more to come. I particularly enjoy the dedi-

cation to the perception of reality this mockumentary has promised, as it does pose the question of what an actual paranormal unit might really look like. Granted, it’s probably not something that’ll ever happen – I for one believe in ghosts

but as far as evidence goes, there’s not much – but it’s certainly still something interesting (and ridiculous) to think about. Expect this to join the television series box-sets that sit on my bookshelf and get watched over and over.
