WANGARATTA teen Debra Klima-Everingham has returned home after spending 12 months in Brazil. The 18 year old who left for her trip on January 18, 2019 and returned last month, is now fluent in Brazilian Portuguese and has a year of memories to last a life time. “My Mum has travelled a lot and has always talked about the places she’s gone so I got the excitement for a different lifestyle and take on everything from her,” Debra said. “One of Mum’s friends from work told me about the Rotary program so I went through an interview and application process and asked to go to South Korea, Canada or Japan because I was learning Japanese and South Korean at the time and I like Canada. “However, because I was a late applicant, I only got the choice of Switzerland, Taiwan or Brazil and initially I was pretty upset I didn’t get my choices. “Within my first month though I was so happy; I lived with four different host families for three months each and my first experience was in a tiny apartment in a cramped city, plus I didn’t know any Portuguese so it was tough.

HUNTING CORNER

YOUR GARDEN

Deer hunting changes FURTHER changes have been made in December 2019 for permit recreational hunters to have wild deer processed in an unlicensed meat processing facility. Under the Wildlife Act 1975 and its subordinate legislation there are a number of circumstances in which wild deer can be harvested and a number of ways in which the carcasses can be used. Additional requirements under the Meat Industry Act 1993 or interstate legislation may apply to deer carcasses taken for commercial processing. All deer (except Hog Deer) are unprotected on private property in Victoria under certain conditions. A landowner, or person authorised by the landowner, may humanely destroy deer (except Hog Deer) on their property. The deer carcasses can be used for personal consumption and can be taken to a facility licenced by PrimeSafe for commercial processing for pet food or inedible rendering. The deer carcasses can also be taken to a facility licensed by PrimeSafe for commercial processing for human consumption.

with agriculture.vic.gov.au

A person holding a relevant game licence from the GMA may take wild deer from private land (with the permission of the landowner) or from public land, for personal consumption. Recreational hunters should ensure that any unlicensed meat processing facility used to process deer carcasses has sufficient practices in place to manage food safety and hygiene. Deer carcasses taken by recreational harvesters cannot be processed in any meat processing facility that processes game or other meat into products available for sale. For more information, including what you must know before destroying deer on private properly is available from the Game Management Authority (GMA) or call 136 186. Hunters can ďŹ nd further information at http://agriculture.vic.gov.au/ agriculture/game-hunting/processing-of-wild-deer/game-meat-safetyfor-recreational-deer-hunters.

◆ SPECTACULAR: This ush of owers - Senna artemisioides [form] - was taken after 50mm of rain this month.

Senna artemisioides

I GREW up among dyed-in-thewool South Australian gardeners who, despite living in the driest state on the driest continent on earth took great pride in creating beautiful gardens. A most reliable, popular and beautiful medium shrub was Yellow Cassia or Punty Bush. In springtime, clusters of buttercup-gold owers offset feathery silver-grey foliage with further ‘bonus-surprise’ ushes following heavy summer rain. Australian Cassias have now been re-classiďŹ ed as Sennas, and Senna artemisioides remains a ďŹ rm favourite of dryland gardeners. Plants can be found in gardens and natural bushland in every Australian state. Masses of these lovely plants grow wild beside the Stuart Highway from Alice Springs to Port Augusta and bloom proliďŹ cally in late winter. They feature in dryland public gardens such as the Olive Pink Botanic Gardens at Alice Springs, the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden at Port Augusta and

Saturday 7th of MARCH

the Australian Inland Botanic Gardens at Wentworth [near Mildura]. Sennas belong to the Fabacaeae [pea] family. This becomes obvious when, following proliďŹ c blooming, conspicuous pendent at green seedpods measuring up to about eight cms appear. The pods age to dark brown, some retaining dark brown small pea-like seeds, others curling to release the seeds, adding another dimension to this easy-togrow shrub’s attractiveness. The S. artemisioides complex has presented a naming challenge for botanical classiďŹ cation, and further investigation continues. It has been described as “a form taxon whose phylogenetic diversity is still largely unresolvedâ€?. Approximately 15 species which were previously considered independent are now considered subspecies or forms of S. artemisioides. The Latin epithet “artemisioidesâ€? refers to the similarity of the foliage to the unrelated Artemesia [wormwood plant.

Various forms of S. artemisioides vary in height from one to three metres, with a similar spread. This group of medium shrubs works well in mixed plantings for interesting foliage contrast. S. artemisiodes adapts to a wide range of soil types, but must be protected from frost below -4° when young. It grows best in dry, welldrained sites in full sun, needing minimal supplementary water, and is long-lived. It may reach mature dimensions in 10 - 20 years. S. artemisiodes may be propagated from semi-hardwood cuttings. If collecting seed from garden plants, and to protect from insect attack, collect pods from the shrub as soon as they are dark brown. Place these in a zip-top bag in the freezer for a few days. Once dried, the seed will remain viable for years. Scarify the seed with boiling water before planting in a good seed-raising mix. Germination may be erratic. S. artemisiodes is also available from the nursery trade.

This Day in History, 1872 A FINE crop of opium poppies, grown quite legitimately at Taminick, went on display in Wangaratta on this day in 1872. Farmers were particularly anxious to diversify, and were willing to try any crop which had the potential for profit. At the time, opium was in considerable demand, not only for medicinal purposes, but the growing Chinese community in Melbourne provided a ready market.

Are you mineral deficient? MINERAL deďŹ ciencies are more common in Australia than you may realise. This is occurring for many reasons: poor diets, poor soil quality that our food is grown in, increased stress, increased reliance on medications, increased caffeine and alcohol consumption, all effect how many of the minerals and vitamins we consume and absorb with each meal. More than one in three males and one in 10 females have inadequate levels of zinc, 73 per cent of Australian women are not meeting their calcium requirements, 34 per cent of women do not consume enough dietary magnesium and 23 per cent of females have inadequate iron intakes. such as iodine, selenium and chromium follow a similar trend. Many more people are following restricted diets such as low carbohydrate, low allergy diets or adopting a vegan lifestyle. Following these can restrict gluten, dairy, nuts, ďŹ sh, meats and certain fruits and vegetables. Others are over-consuming meat, dairy and cereal based products, leaving little space for fruit and vegetable intake each day. Over consuming and under consuming certain foods can lead to deďŹ ciencies in minerals, if good alternatives are not sought or recognised. But it isn’t just dietary restrictions leading to low nutrient levels. Even those with a ‘good diet’ can

New perspectives in Brazil Ŷ

From page 1

“In my first three weeks I also experienced a shooting at a night club I was at with friends and someone was attacked on the main street and died so that was pretty confronting. “My other three families went relatively well; I could speak Portuguese after the first three months and I met so many amazing people.” Debra said she had some amazing experiences all around Brazil, which she will never forget. “We went to Rio de Janeiro for a week and got to see a carnival and the Parade of Champions, which was amazing,” she said. “We stayed on a boat for three days on the Amazon River with no service which was lifechanging; there were about 30 students and everyone got along so well.

“On that trip we were introduced to southern native American tribes who performed a ceremony for us and told us about their lifestyle. “We also went to a village that was fully self-sustainable and had little to no contact with the rest of the world; there were about 2000 people living there with 150 students at their school and they only sent two students a year to university in the big city which is about a six hour boat ride. “To support them our trip advisor told us a few months before the trip to collect school supplies for them and collectively we brought 25kg to that village and it was like Christmas for these kids.” The trip was Debra’s first time overseas and before she left she told people she

wouldn’t miss her family or friends. “At about the three month mark I realised how far away my family was so I definitely learnt the value of what I have back home and how lucky I am,” she said. “I also missed speaking English because I obviously had to learn the language but I’m fluent now so that’s exciting and, from learning Brazilian Portuguese I can now understand Italian, French and Spanish.” Overall, Debra said her trip was an incredible experience and she is glad to have had the opportunity to learn more about Brazil as a country. “Brazil is quite unknown from an outsider’s perspective but the people are so friendly; not one person I met was rude to me and they were so welcoming,” she said.

“One of my favourite things was the way people greet is with a hug and a kiss on the left cheek. “I think I’ve changed quite a bit for the better; I learnt so much and it was nice to be around people who hadn’t grown up with me and who would tell me negative things I might’ve been doing and I’d learn from them. “Going into a developing country as a first travelling experience was crazy; the moment I switched planes from my international to domestic flights in Brazil I could immediately see the difference. “When I was in Brazil I decided not to contact Australia so I could make my own life there and immerse myself in it but I did lose a lot of friends and they all graduated while I was away but I’ve learnt that the people

who stick around are the most important.” Debra is now completing year 12 at Wangaratta High School and is maintaining her Portuguese language by read-

Levels of abstraction - Part 1

GONE FISHING

“At each increase of knowledge, as well as on the contrivance of every new tool, human labour becomes abridged. - Charles Babbage, father of the digital computer.

â—† YUMMY YABBIES: Yabbies are a true delicacy. As the water starts to cool down soon the yabbies will start to go off the bite for the winter months. These rippers were caught last week in a private dam.

Cod hard to catch MY Murray cod drought continues. I have more chance of getting kicked by a tiger snake than I do of catching a Murray cod at the moment - well it seems that way anyway. Speaking of snakes, I ran into two while ďŹ shing in the Wangaratta area last week, so be careful where you put your feet. Across North East Victoria most people are reporting slow Murray cod ďŹ shing. There have been a few caught and bait seems to be working the best with tasty cheese cut into small cubes being the stand out bait. The above mentioned cod were caught in the Ovens River and the Broken River. There is a ush of very dirty water slowly making its way down the Ovens River at the moment. As I type the Ovens River upstream of Wangaratta is absolutely ďŹ lthy. I suspect the dirty water is coming from the Buckland and Buffalo rivers which were burnt out last month. On Tuesday the dirty water was at Tarrawingee and it took until the end of the week for it to start impacting Wangaratta, so it is very slow moving.

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA If ďŹ shing the Ovens River this next week, I recommend you head downstream. I ďŹ shed Lake Sambell in Beechworth one evening during the week and landed two nice redďŹ n of 27cm and 31cm. They were the only ďŹ sh I caught, ďŹ shing from my kayak. Both ďŹ sh were caught on Strike Tiger nymph soft plastics. I have been yabbying quite a bit lately, trying to get a feed or two before the cool weather arrives. Once the water starts to cool down the yabbies start slowing down quite quickly, so if you like yabbying now before they go off the bite. Yabbies are a true delicacy. As the water starts to cool down soon the yabbies will start to go off the bite for the winter months. These rippers were caught last week in a private dam.

AS we go about our day, it’s easy to forget just how much impact computers have on our lives. More to the point, almost nobody actually thinks about the intricate, Russian-doll like cascade of electrical current that runs through a computer when they type the letter ‘a’. If there is any technology that the phrase ‘Standing on the shoulders of giants’ ďŹ ts most, it is surely computers - for without the contributions of remarkable people each decade since the early 20th century, modern day computers would be outright impossible to build from scratch. From the manipulation of electrons via transistors, to the ones and zeros known as binary, to the gates that use boolean logic to turn this binary into useful snippets of machine code to perform actions and beyond, we call each of these intermediate steps ‘levels of abstraction’. And it’s probably of interest for you to know that at some point throughout the history of computing, each level of abstraction was considered to be a fully functioning computer in it’s own right. Over the next couple of weeks, I thought we would take a look at each of these levels, as it’s a lesson in the history of computers that gives us perspective - and a great deal of appreciation - for the technology we take for granted today. The Tabulating Machine In the 1880’s, the United States Census Bureau was facing a crisis. The population of the US was booming, and it had taken seven years to complete the census -so long, in fact, that the data was critically out of date by the time it was complete. And it was estimated that the 1890 census would take 13 years to complete, which posed a considerable problem given that the census needed to be completed every decade. So the bureau turned to Herman Hollerith, who invented an electrome-

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ FIT THAT IN YOUR OFFICE: The Harvard Mark I, comprised of 765,000 components, was developed by IBM for the Allies during World War II. This remarkable achievement’s sheer mechanical complexity spurred scientists to develop better ways to build computers.

chanical tabulating machine. The machine worked by inserting a card into a slot that had small holes punched out of it corresponding to particular data for a given citizen. If you were married, for instance, you would punch out the ‘married’ hole. If you were Catholic or Protestant, you would punch out the appropriate hole, and so on. Once inserted, pins would drop down inside the machine and either be stopped, if no hole had been punched, or passing through the hole if it had, dipping into a small vial of mercury which would complete the circuit and register a result. Hollerith’s machine was a remarkable success, completing the 1890 census in just two and half years, and Hollerith himself would go on to found a machine building company that would later become International Business Machines - or IBM for short. Yes, you may have heard of it. Equally important, the tabulating machine was one of the earliest and most well known examples of an electric machine that used truth tables and boolean logic. The Harvard Mark I One of the largest electromechanical computers ever built was the Harvard Mark I. Built by IBM for the Allies during

World War Two, it contained 765,000 components, three million connections, and 500 miles of wire. The brains of the operation in this behemoth were relays - electronically controlled mechanical switches. When current owed through the relay control wire, the electromagnetic ďŹ eld generated attracted a small metal arm inside the relay that completed the circuit. The completed circuit might then continue to other circuits, or turn on a small motor that might increment a count on a gear. In this way, the Harvard Mark I used the same basic principle that Hollerith’s earlier machine did - the manipulation of the ow within circuits to register true or false statements, but on a much grander scale. There was just one problem, the mechanical relay arms contained mass, and the best ones were only able to ip back and forward around 50 times per second, so no matter how big the machines became, speed would always become a compounding issue. On top of this, wear and tear was a major problem, and the Harvard Mark I probably spent more of it’s time nonoperational and needing to be ďŹ xed than it did actually working. To solve these problems would require further advances in technology.
