Living in the past, for future generations

ROYCE Sample may have been considered an ‘outsider’ when he first arrived in Gapsted with his delightfully prominent Oklahoman twang but it wasn’t long before he proved himself a dedicated advocate for the area and its history, and is now claimed by the locals as ‘one of their own’. Royce was born and bred in North East Oklahoma, USA and migrated to Australia, specifically Melbourne, in 1975 as a ‘political refugee’ from Nixon’s America. Originally a geography and history teacher, Royce’s main motivation in coming to Australia was to be a farmer, so when the family grew tired of Melbourne in 1985 they found their way to Gapsted. “We liked that particular property better than any others we looked at and it reminded me a lot of where I grew up,” he said. In 1988, Royce’s teaching background and strong interest in environmental issues led him to join the newly-formed Burgoigee Creek Landcare Group in the next valley over at Bowmans Forest/Murmungee. “I was fortunate to be selected by the group as the part-time coordinator and a sequence of environmental and agricultural consulting jobs in North East Victoria followed in the ensuing years,” he recalled. Those opportunities led to Charles Sturt University (CSU) Professor, Alan Curtis, asking Royce to join his social studies team which mostly investigated landholder experiences with various governmental environmental programs. “After several years talking to landholders in Victoria, NSW and Tasmania, I ‘retired’ to farm once again,” Royce said. But it wasn’t long before he was drawn back to his historical roots and, with Landcare bounding forward in the early 1990s, Royce found himself becoming ‘almost a local’ in Bowmans Forest/Murmungee.

Corneal ulceration THE cornea is the transparent shiny membrane that makes up the front of the eyeball. It is composed of many layers, and ulceration can result from damage to one or several of these layers. If left untreated, corneal ulcers can be severe, where irreparable damage and blindness can occur. We see corneal ulcers in many species including cats, dogs, horses and cattle. Common causes of ulceration include traumatic injury such as cat scratches or grass seeds. Other causes include constant irritation from infection, eyelid abnormalities or decreased tear production. Corneal ulcers can be diagnosed by closely examining the eye and with the use of a fluorescent green stain. If an ulcer is present, it will soak up the stain and fluoresce under UV light.

with Amy Brown, BVSc, Wangaratta Veterinary Clinic Once a diagnosis is made, the treatment will depend on the severity of the ulcer. Superficial ulcers will usually heal quickly with an antibiotic ointment and pain relief. Deeper ulcers can be much more complicated; sometimes involving more extensive treatment such as placement of a contact lens or even surgery to assist in the healing process. Corneal ulcers are very painful; signs to look out for include squinting, avoiding bright light, rubbing of the eyes and discharge from the eye. These signs may also be present in other eye conditions and therefore seeking veterinary attention is recommended, to ensure the correct diagnosis and treatment.

◆ GET DIRTY: Studies show that spending time in green spaces and getting dirty can have mental benefits. PHOTO: Garden Releaf

Gardening is nature’s medicine GARDENS, gardening and interactions with plants and green spaces provide therapeutic and physical benefits improving our physical, emotional and mental health and wellbeing. Recent health studies in the UK are encouraging GP’s to prescribe gardening and gardens as support to traditional clinical referrals to help alleviate health symptoms. Quantitative studies have shown significant reductions in symptoms of depression and anxiety following gardening-based interventions (www.sustainweb.org/ resources/files/presentations/GH-

Research also shows that 20 minutes spent in green settings such as parks and gardens reduce the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), compared to time spent in concrete recreation areas and even views of greenery through the window can have a positive impact on mental health. Are you getting enough Garden Releaf, and can a loved one benefit from more Garden Releaf? Garden Releaf day is held in March each year, and is proudly supporting Beyondblue and more

than 40 locally owned garden centres across Australia. Among other activities, plant ‘parties’ which provide ideas, inspiration and information to help and encourage people to get involved and take part in a 30 green minutes challenge are held. Participating local nurseries, further information, tips and tricks for your own garden and much more can be found at http://gardenreleaf.com.au. And, as they say at Garden Releaf: whenever and wherever you can get in a garden, get healthy and have fun.

All Saints Estate The Keep Tawny BACK in the days when Masterchef had judges we all knew the name of, there was a real trend towards the idea of dessert bars and dessert-only restaurants. Inspired by the likes of Zumbo and Polyviou, clever cooks like contestant Reynold amazed with sweet sculptural installations that belonged in the pages of a glossy magazine, and somehow the idea seemed reasonable. But much as I love a beautiful dessert, for me a sweet can only ever be the full stop at the end of a savoury sentence, and more often than not, I go without. The other tricky part is that toward the end of a multi-course meal I’m usually enjoying a full bodied, dry wine, so really only cheese will do. I’d rather wait until I’m home and end the evening with a small glass of All Saints Estate The Keep Tawny from Wahgunyah. It’s made from Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro grapes, harvested from some of All Saints’ oldest vines, with brandy spirit added to fortify the wine. It has a bronzy red colour and a warming, fruity aroma which is a little bit oaky and nutty.

with Anita McPherson

The liquid is mellow and soothing; slightly sweet and fruity but also slightly savoury with oak - and there is a bit of dryness at the finish. While I’m happy to just sit and sip, it turns out that it goes really nicely with baklava, and I can also imagine enjoying it with a brownie, or a small slice of pecan pie. Not necessarily in the same sitting - but let’s not rule anything out.

This Day in History, 1974 IN an unusual competition held in conjunction with the 1974 Albury Trade Fair, a team of three Wangaratta motor mechanics assembled an engine faster than any other team. In competition against a number of other district teams, the Wangaratta team from Pat Heffernan Motors - Neville McPherson, Adrian Kiker and Les Brown - assembled a motor from 160 pieces and got it started in six minutes and 48 seconds. That time included the mandatory 10 seconds running time after assembly. The team won a three day holiday at any Travel Lodge in Australia, with air fares thrown in.

with Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) ◆ NOT A SQUARE MEAL: While vitamin supplements have their place, they should not replace a balanced diet.

Multivitamins no substitute for diet ARE you living a healthy lifestyle with a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables and whole-grains? Or are you simply making up for a nutritionally devoid diet by popping pills? Vitamins and minerals have their place when it comes to controlling symptoms, but this place is not at the top of the food chain. Only six per cent of Aussie kids are eating the minimum serving of two fruits and five vegetables. However, as a nation we self-prescribe ourselves millions of dollars worth of dietary supplements each year. Multivitamin and mineral supplements are a multi-million dollar industry, and while supplements defiantly have their place, this place is not at the top of the food chain. Have you read the back of the multivitamin packet? You should. The packaging clearly states - ‘vitamin supplements should not replace a balanced diet’. While supplements work exceptionally well to combat symp-

toms, there is no substitute for eating good food everyday. If you think that eating white bread with added omega 3, a glass of orange juice concentrate fortified with folate, one tablespoon of frozen vegetables and a multivitamin is adequate nutrition, then you are missing the point. Being healthy is not about which multivitamin you are taking. It is about how many pieces of fresh fruit and vegetables you had today, yesterday and will have tomorrow. It is about growing a small planter box of your favourite culinary herbs on the windowsill and adding these to homecooked meals. Being healthy is about getting your nutrients from a food that recently came from the earth, the land, the dairy or the sea - not from a jar, tin, packet, fast food outlet or the nutrients from a pill. Talk to Belinda, our naturopath, about how to best support your diet, and if you really do need a multivitamin, or something more specific.

Living in the past, for future generations Ŷ

From page 1

“I was aware that the local area had some unique (but typically Australian) characteristics and that many of the original settlers’ descendants still lived there,” Royce said. “The Landcare Group had started a history project but the 2009 bushfires derailed that effort so in 2017, I decided to update it with a brief local history. “There was so much enthusiasm from the group that we decided to revive the project. “The area contains all the most fascinating elements of Australian history; Aboriginals, convicts, squatters, gold, selectors and the struggle to develop agriculture and a way of life.” A committee which included Royce, Glenda Heywood, Denise Rae and Judy Griffiths was formed and they estimated a budget of $12,000 would be

needed to fund the research and then get their findings out to the wider community. A successful grant application saw $10,000 awarded from the Rural City of Wangaratta with the final $2000 pledged by the local Giant Pumpkin and Harvest Festival. In early 2018, the committee started work on the first part of the project - a local history book named ‘Gold, Grog, and Good Ground’ which was to be launched for the 150th anniversary of the old Murmungee Hall’s completion in March 2019. The book only went to print the week before the ceremony - Kwik Kopy in Albury tasked with the job of printing, collating and binding 150 copies ready for sale in time for the celebrations. for future projects but for interested readers, copies are available for loan at the Wangaratta, Beechworth and Myrtleford libraries and the committee is currently in discussions about a limited reprint of the book due to its popularity. Buoyed by the response to their efforts so far, the group got started on the next stages of the project; historical signs and a website where an even wider audience could find information on the area, its people and history. With the assistance of community members who donated time and shared information, family history and stories, four out of the intended six historical signs have been produced by David Collier of Beechworth and erected as part of a local History Trail. “The intention of the signage is to give travellers, bike

The first is located at VicRoads Roadside Stop on the Great Alpine Road at the Burgoigee Creek, which was the route Hume and Hovell took to cross the Ovens River, near the site of the original ‘town’ of Bowmans Forest. The second sign is at the Bowmans Forest Cemetery - the resting place of many of the pioneers and Chinese citizens - and was one of the first such cemeteries in North East Victoria. The third is at the ‘new’ Bowmans-Murmungee Hall on the site of the original 1897 Creamery - the major employer at the time (there was an existing sign at the heritage listed ‘old’ Murmungee Hall on the Buckland Road). The fourth is at Taylors Gap

THIS is part of a regular series featuring recipes that have become popular during the COVID-19 lockdown. This is Myrtleford Times journalist Ashleigh Piles’ favourite banana bread recipe. Ashleigh shares her simple and delicious recipe for banana bread, with the addition of Nutella cranking up the sweetness.

◆ WAR OF WORDS: If you’ve done a google search recently, you’ll no doubt be aware that the Australian Government is set on passing laws that will force Google and Facebook to pay for the news content they feature in their respective news feeds. But similar laws in both Spain and Germany saw Google respond by removing news content from their feeds, effectively harming the news organisations the laws intended to help in those countries.

The lion and the mountain goat

Easy banana bread GET your tastebuds buzzing for this simple make, bake and watch it go recipe. Once baked, keep in an airtight container out of direct sunlight for up to three days or freeze for about a month. Tastes divine fresh out of the oven and even better toasted. Ingredients: 2 cups all-purpose flour ½ tsp baking powder ½ tsp baking soda ¾ cup sugar 1/3 cup melted butter 2 mashed bananas 2 eggs 1 cup greek yoghurt 1 tsp vanilla ½ tsp salt Nutella

Method: Preheat oven to 200 degrees and grease an oven proof square tin. Mix together all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, melted butter and mashed bananas. Add eggs, greek yoghurt, vanilla and salt. Add half of the mixture in pan. Spread desired amount of Nutella. Add remaining mixture on top. Garnish with bananas (optional). Cook for 40 minutes or until golden on top. Leave to cool for five minutes and enjoy!

IT was a bright and sunny day. The birds were chirping, the grass and flowers danced joyfully in the light breeze, and the fish swam around babbling brooks, performing their fishly duties - whatever they may be. Many days had been similar to this, but this day was quite different due to one small, but very special detail. For today - unlike other, lesser days - a quite important mountain goat had a very important business meeting with an extremely important lion. And so it was that the important mountain goat marched with important purpose along a mountain path to the lion’s cave. Upon reaching the cave, the important mountain goat stamped it’s hooves twice, puffed out it’s chest, and said, “Mr Lion, I am an important mountain goat, and I am here to speak to you about our business together.” A low, yawning growl emanated from inside the dark cave, and a short time later the extremely important lion emerged from the cave’s mouth, stretched lazily, and regarded the mountain goat with mild bemusement. “I own and operate many businesses, little goat, I’m afraid you’ll have to be more specific,” said the lion in a deep, resonant voice. The mountain goat puffed out his chest even further, hiding his chagrin at the lion’s dismissal of his importance.

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au “Well,” said the mountain goat. “I specifically refer to my business, ‘Mountain Grass Pty Ltd.’, and the sale of my vegetation related products in your ‘LioMart’ stores.” “I see,” replied the lion. “And what of them?” “Well,” continued the mountain goat. “For years my own ‘GoatMart’ stores sold my vegetation products. “Then your LioMart stores moved in and grew larger and larger - everyone shopped at them - and eventually I had to close my own stores.” The lion rubbed his chin, intrigued as to where the conversation was leading, “Go on,” he said. “Well, now I sell my products out of your stores.” “Yes,” responded the lion. “Now that you mention it, your little goat products do ring a bell.” The lion paused, licking his paw idly for a moment, before continuing, “You’re here to negotiate a bigger share of the profits, I presume?”

“In a manner of speaking,” said the goat. “My products are immensely popular among other mountain goats, and so I think it is only right and fair that you pay for the privilege of stocking my items on top of the profits I make.” The lion frowned, “Mountain goat patronage comprises a very small market share of my overall turnover,” he said. “So small, in fact, that I often don’t bother putting a profit margin on it at all. “In addition, without my stores, you admit you would have nowhere to sell your products.” The lion gave the mountain goat a patronising grin, “So tell me, little goat, why would I elect to continue stocking your goods at all if you’re going to make it so fiscally...uninteresting?” Taken aback, the mountain goat sputtered, “Well, the council of animals has declared that your treatment of me is inequitable, unjust, and all-round unfair.” His expression mixed with despondence and sympathy, the lion padded his way over to the goat and put a consoling paw on its shoulder. “It’s true,” said the lion. “My treatment of you is unfair, unjust, and undeniably inequitable. “But you are forgetting one important little detail, my important little goat.” “And what’s that?” asked the goat. The lion bared his teeth. “I am a lion, and you are a mountain goat.”
