Fostering design talent

By KYLIE WILSON

WITH student engineers from across Australia and 12 different countries set to descend on the North East this December for design competition Formula SAE Australia, Wangaratta’s Geoff Pearson is looking forward to helping others foster their engineering skills. “Hands-on work gets people together and creates real relationships,” Geoff said. He has been engrossed in engineering since his youth, when he worked in the motorcycle industry straight out of high school. At the age of 30, he decided to go back to university, and began attending RMIT in 1998 to study mechanical engineering, concentrating on automotive engineering. During a gap in his studies, he spent time working at Holden, which piqued his interest in working with design engineers themselves and leading people. “I like to look at design from a creative point of view, and learn how you encourage creativity,” he said. Geoff joined RMIT’s Formula SAE team in 2002, which gave him a practical outlet for his engineering expertise and helped him hone his leadership skills. Formula SAE cars can be either combustion engine or electrically powered, and all aspects of the project must be completed by the students. In 2003, he became the chief engineer of the team, and they competed in the Australasian event.

GARDEN HINTS

Still plenty on at the snow fields SNOW fun is drawing to a close, but there are still plenty of ways to enjoy local mountains. Those at Falls Creek are looking forward to the McKays Snow. Dirt. Road. Enduro on October 6, with the course taking riders 23 kilometres through various terrains for a total descent of 1750 metres. At Mt Hotham, children can enjoy the fun of Lego at Big D as LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre Melbourne is bringing LEGO® fun from the city to Hotham these September school holidays until October 7. At Mt Buller, Yoplait Petit Miam Kids’ Week is taking place until Friday, with plenty of fun for the kids to enjoy. Mt Buller will also host 2018 ski season closing festivities on October 6. At Mt Buffalo, the snow cover is still sufficient for sightseeing and snowplay, and possibly to-

bogganing (depending on current conditions – check on ski reports as below). Whatever mountain you’re visiting, keep an eye on snow cams and ski reports, or ask at your local ski hire business or tourism information centre to find out current snow levels, snow chain fitting advice, and weather at resorts around the area. with Mandi McDonald GARDENING SPECIALIST ◆ WHITE BLOOM: Magnolia blooms are making their presence felt in local gardens right now.

Get to work in garden everything make sure to top up mulch as well. This helps to suppress weeds and keep the ground moist. Water your garden after fertilising and mulching. If we are not getting significant rain you will need to keep watering. As the garden is having a massive growth spurt it is really important to ensure it has adequate moisture to sustain this growth and head into the warmer months. Prepare your vegetable garden now for spring planting. Well rotted compost and manure are a good source of organic matter to get the worms busy.

EARLY spring is a busy time in the garden! There are lots of jobs we should get done now before summer sneaks up on us. Feeding is really important at this time of the year. As the days get warmer, plants will respond well to fertiliser as most are in the active growth period now. It is also a great time to trim any hedges that may have gotten untidy over autumn and winter. Trimming now means they have time to recover before the summer heat. Also tidy up any trees and shrubs as they finishing flowering. Once you have trimmed and fed

Unless you are prepared to cover for frost hold off planting tomatoes and other frost tender vegetables until early to mid October. Also make sure you have fruit fly protection in place. Lawns will need some attention now. Feed the entire lawn and over sow bare patches so it can establish before it gets hot. Mowing regularly helps keep the lawn healthy as well. Enjoy the beautiful show that your spring garden will be putting on now. Tulips, magnolias, and asparagus spears are certainly giving me a sense of spring in my own backyard. Happy gardening.

FEATURE STORY

Toxic plants and chemicals KEEPING our dogs and cats safe from potentially toxic plants and chemicals require us to know what to look out for. The following are just a few common plants and chemicals used in the garden. PLANTS Foxglove and oleander contain cardiac glycosides, a toxin that can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness, muscle tremors, difficulty breathing, cardiac arrhythmias, heart failure and death. In the case of oleander, the toxin remains in the leaves and branches long after clippings have dried and in some instances poisonings occur as the plant no longer has any odour or taste. Garlic, onion, leeks and chives all contains various amount of organosulfoxides, toxic to cats and dogs. Clinical signs vary depending on whether ingestion occurs in small amounts over long periods or large amounts in the short term. They include vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, weakness, anaemia and exercise intolerance. Daffodil contains alkaloids and oxalates, the bulb being the most toxic part of the plant. Clinical signs include vomiting, diarrhoea, oral irritation, drowsiness and convulsions. Lilies are toxic to cats when ingested and cause acute renal failure, which can lead to death very quickly and often requires prompt and aggressive veterinary intervention. Unfortunately treatment is not always successful when trying to restore kidney function and long term kidney damage is of major concern. Grapes are toxic to dogs. 40 grams of fresh grapes consists of a toxic dose causing kidney damage. Acute renal failure and irreversible kidney damage can occur.

with Dr Kate Norman VETERINARIAN Sago palm is toxic to dogs when ingested. It can cause vomiting, lethargy and diarrhoea. In its most severe form it can lead to neurological signs, jaundice, spontaneous bleeding and liver failure. More severe clinical signs can take weeks or months to occur and it is associated with a 50 per cent mortality rate. GARDEN CHEMICALS Snail bait typically contains metaldehyde, however there are some products on the market that use different chemical compounds and checking the active ingredient on the packaging will shed light on the type of chemical used. Metaldehyde toxicity following ingestion causes severe uncontrollable muscle tremors and hyperthermia (overheating). Clinical signs ensue 1-3 hours after ingestion and there is no antidote. Treatment consists of decontamination of the gastrointestinal tract and supportive care whilst the absorbed toxin is cleared from the body. Cases of toxicity are often severe and can be fatal. If you witness your dog or cat ingesting snail bait, contacting your vet immediately is strongly advised. Pyrethroid based insecticides are toxic to cats. Contact with the skin and ingestion cause excessive drooling, agitation, vomiting, incoordination, tremors, seizures and difficulty breathing. Exposure can be fatal and prompt veterinary intervention is required following exposure. If you are concerned your pet may have been exposed to a toxic plant or chemical it is best to ring your vet for expert advice.

VET CORNER THIS week’s pet of the week at Wangaratta RSPCA is Nugget, a tan and black, one year old male Staffordshire cross dog. To see more animals up for adoption at the Wangaratta RSPCA, visit the shelter in Connell Street or phone (03) 5722 2874.

◆ WINNING SPIRIT: Geoff Pearson (at bottom left) with his RMIT teammates during Formula Student competition in 2004.

Ŷ

From page 1

The team then qualified to compete in England in the equivalent European event in 2004, which the RMIT team won outright with their vehicle, built on a shoestring budget of $10,000. “It was a real pleasure,” Geoff said, adding that it has been a highlight of his engineering career. “I worked with such brilliant people, and it was really nice project to be a part of.” Geoff continued into postgraduate studies at RMIT and kept mentoring the team, which has continued to go from strength to strength, including taking out the Australasian Formula SAE championship in 2006. Following his studies, he got involved in the Society of Automotive Engineers, including a brief stint as its executive director, but after his Parkinson’s Disease diagnosis in 2009, he had to scale back his commitments. But Geoff is philosophical about living with the condition, saying it has helped him focus on what is most important in his life. “You have to really focus your energies, and limit the battles that you fight,” he said. Moving to Wangaratta around three years ago, he said he has been keen for several years to help bring a big Formula SAE event to the

DRUG & ALCOHOL FREE EVENT

area, and he is excited for the Formula SAE Australasia competitive event to be taking place this December at Winton Motor Raceway. “I was really keen to bring it up here,” he said. “It gets a fair bit of interest.” Geoff said the growing popularity of science, engineering and other related courses in the area, as well as the growing visibility of school engineering and robotics teams, show the community interest in fostering tech talent. “It gives them a perspective of where they could go with their studies,” he said. Geoff said more people should get involved in engineering and similar fields as a career to help built Australia’s reputation for innovation. “We’re a very hands-on nation, we just need more leadership and vision,” he said. Geoff, the volunteer coordinator of the December event, said that volunteers aged over 18 are currently being sought in a number of capacities to help the December event run smoothly. Formula SAE Australasia will be held at Winton Motor Raceway from December 6 to 10. For further details, including information on volunteering, visit www.saea.com.au.

Bright report on trout fishing Anthony went on to tell me that it has been the best start to a season for many years for him. I think him for the awesome and refreshing report. Me personally, I still continue to struggle in the streams. I went fishing in the Bright and Myrtleford region myself last Thursday. I fished several small tributaries of the Ovens River where I found the fishing to be quite tough. In some streams I found fish that were not interested and in other streams I saw nothing. I did manage one lovely brown trout

TROUT fishing reports continue to vary a lot this week, but I have had one standout report. Anthony Cocks has reported fantastic trout fishing in the Bright region. His exact words were: “I’ve been reading your columns in the Alpine Observer since the start of the season and your reports of ordinary fishing are entirely at odds with my experiences in Bright. With only a couple of exceptions every trout, mostly rainbows, but also a brown or two has been over 35cm with the biggest going 40cm (16”) and 1.3lb. Almost all fish have been caught within 1km of the centre of Bright”.

of around 35cm on a home made Millewa spinner though. I have been back over to the Boosey/Broken Creek region trying to catch more yellowbelly a couple of times but have been unable to reproduce my success from a couple of weeks ago, managing only a few small to medium sized carp. I am hoping to get over there on my days off work this week with the hope that the warmer weather may see the yellowbelly biting a bit better. On a less serious note, I learnt something new this week - Dogs can not operate MRI scanners, but cats can.

LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION

◆ FUN TO CATCH: The recent warmer weather has seen quite a few carp caught around the region. Carp are a fantastic fighting fish and great fun for kids to catch. This big ‘scaled whale’ was caught in the King River in Wangaratta on Sunday afternoon on a bunch of worms.

Place the grapes on a baking tray, drizzle over some oil and the white balsamic, season with sea salt and sprinkle over the thyme leaves. Toss to coat the grapes. Roast for 10 minutes, until the grapes are starting to burst. Remove from the oven and set aside. Reduce the oven temperature to 150C and line a baking tray with baking paper. To make the candied pecans, combine the egg white, maple syrup, cinnamon and sea salt. Add the pecans and toss to coat well, then lay the pecans out on the prepared tray in a single layer and bake in the

oven for 40 minutes, turning every 15 minutes, until the nuts are golden. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with sea salt. Combine the yoghurt and lemon juice. Place the kale, apple and celery in a large bowl and add the yoghurt mixture along with a generous drizzle of olive oil and a pinch of sea salt. Toss everything together. To serve, arrange the kale and apple mixture on a serving platter, top with the roasted grapes and all their pan juices, dot with the burrata or mozzarella and scatter over the pecans. Finish with a ďŹ nal drizzle of olive oil and another pinch of sea salt and black pepper. This recipe was supplied from Hetty McKinnon’s Family cookbook for Meat Free Week 2018. The campaign runs from 24-30 September in support of Bowel Cancer Australia. See meatfreeweek.org to sign up.

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ MOUTHFUL: The Aztec Sun Stone, called Teoilhuicatlapaluaztli-Ollin Tonalmachiotl, was one of a variety of calendars the Aztecs used to measure the course of the year for various purposes - chiefly, religious ceremonies and agricultural dates.

Ancient civilisations - technology of the Aztecs

THE Aztecs were a mighty civilization that flourished in Central America between 1325 and 1521, when they were forced to surrender to an invading Spanish army. From their magnificent capital, Tenochtitlan, they governed a vast empire that stretched from present-day Mexico to Guatemala, and from the Atlantic to the Pacific oceans. They are often thought of as a fierce people, aggressive in battle and engaging in human sacrifice to appease their various gods. However, the Aztecs were also extremely civilised and sophisticated, developing advanced technologies for their time, independent

of outside influence. Some of the important accomplishments of Aztec technology include independent development of mathematics, development of a specialised calendar, invention of the canoe, and various helpful forms of medicine. Aztec weapons Aztec technology used for making weapons mainly relied on the use of stone and copper due to the fact that they did not have access to iron and bronze. Before the use of copper for making weapons, they mainly relied on obsidian and chert. In certain other areas, Aztec technology for tools was quite sophisticated - for instance, they made drills which were

made of reed or bone. One of the innovative weapons used by the Aztecs was called macuahuitl which was a wooden club having sharp pieces of volcanic glass. It was used to disable an enemy soldier without killing him. Transportation Aztecs faced two crucial disadvantages in terms of technology for transportation: the absence of wheels and horses. On the land, travelling by foot was the most common way of transportation which naturally was very slow. Due to this reason, the Aztecs did not construct any roads. However, Aztecs did develop canoes which made trans-

portation through streams and rivers easier. This mode of transportation was thus extensively used throughout the Aztec Empire. They dug many small canals for the transportation of canoes. This focus on aquatic transport over land-based transport is largely attributed to the environment surrounding the Aztec Empire, which contained many swamps and tributaries. Science and education Aztecs made several important advancements in the domains of education and science. They were among the first societies in the world to make education compulsory for all children.

This education also included basic military training for all male students. In the field of science, they made advancements in mathematics, medicine, and astronomy. Steam baths and a variety of herbs were used as medicine. In mathematics, they had their own number system which used 20 as its base. Among various other purposes, this numbering system was used for calculating taxes. Buildings and structures One of the most remarkable and well-known achievements of Aztec technology was in the domain of architecture and building of various structures. Some of their enduring feats

include the chinampa system of farming (man-made islands on which crops were planted - around which water flowed, irrigating the soil), stone carving, and the remarkable step pyramids. Proper care was taken about proportions and structure of these pyramids which served as the temples. Another example of Aztec technology in the domain of architecture was the city of Tenochtitlan which was divided into four parts, each having its own architectural value. The Aztecs also built two large aqueducts which fulfilled the need of fresh water for bathing in the city of Tenochtitlan.
