Appetite for change By KYLIE WILSON THE role of communities in creating positive change and growth from within, and the ways in which they can tackle that change, is at the forefront of a new community festival coming to Beechworth in April. The Beechworth Festival of Change is a notfor-profit venture driven by a volunteer group of Beechworth and district-based businesses and non-profit organisations. The purpose of the festival is to build skills and networks to increase the ability of communities to drive positive social and environmental change. The four day event is running from April 1-4, with a range of learning opportunities on offer. Among the hard working organisers of the event is Dr Trudi Ryan, from Words For Change, who said the idea for the festival has been “bubbling along” for a few years, and the intent was to create a unique adult learning experience that offered something for everyone. “Whether you’re a social change advocate with decades of experience, a university academic puzzling on the machinations of society or someone with no previous experience in community-driven change but a growing fire in the belly about the scale and scope of the issues in front of us, there’s much to learn at the festival, and much to be learnt from each other.” Dr Ryan said the festival has a deliberate focus on building skills and networks, rather than on individual issues, and speakers are attending from North East Victoria as well as across Australia and internationally.

Mental health support for small business AUSTRALIAN Taxation Office (ATO) Commissioner Deborah Jenkins recently stated that the ATO is committed to working with government and community organisations to address the issue of mental health support for those in small business. “More and more small businesses are telling us that they are under stress,” she said. “We understand that long hours, cash flow pressures, endless paperwork, staff issues and the blurring boundaries between work and family life can take a toll on mental health.” “That’s why we are working together with organisations such as Beyond Blue, ASBFEO, small businesses and their associations as well as tax practitioners to develop initiatives to better support small business own-

ers with their tax and super obligations when they are experiencing mental health issues.” The ATO has rolled out training for all frontline staff to assist them to better understand mental health issues and show empathy for taxpayers who are struggling. Nearly 6000 staff have already undertaken the training. They also offer a range of services aimed at helping businesses stay on track. As managing debt can be a big contributor of stress for small businesses, the ATO are working to make it easier for small businesses to negotiate and enter into payment plans if they need them. In 2017–18, they negotiated 790,000 payment plans with small businesses. “Payment plans allow small businesses to manage their

tax debts and take the pressure off when other bills are due,” Ms Jenkins said. “But our primary focus in 2019 will be on early engagement and support before debts are due.” The ATO has a small business live chat service and an after-hours call back service available from Monday to Thursday. Small business owners can also subscribe to the Small Business Newsroom to get all the latest information and alerts. The website has more information for people running small business experiencing mental health issues - ato.gov. au/smallbizmentalhealth There are also many helpful resources available for small business owners on the website at ato.gov. au/SBsupport.

with Mandi McDonald GARDENING SPECIALIST ◆ TLC: Taking extra care with your plants - especially roses – now will pay off handsomely in autumn.

The end of summer care

I’M sure we are all breathing a sigh of relief with the cooler temperatures and lovely fresh mornings. Given that it is February, I’m not sure our hot weather is over yet, but we will enjoy this while it lasts. The dewy mornings and cooler nights temperature can lull us in to a false sense that we do not have to water as much. Unfortunately, we need to keep it up now more than ever because the ground is extremely dry. There is danger of plants that you have gotten through the worst of summer not making it to the end. All of us will be experiencing losses in the garden due the extreme heat. It is disappointing but unavoidable. It is a really good opportunity to see what plants are summer survivors and think about using these elsewhere in the garden.

CATTLE

If you have shrubs and perennials that have burnt foliage resist the temptation to cut them back too hard until the weather cools down quite a bit more. Exposing the fresh growth to more potential hot weather will only stress it out. Once the temperature has dropped but the ground is still warm, get busy trimming and enjoy some fresh new growth. A dose of liquid fertiliser in mid autumn will be taken up readily by hungry plants, so do this once you have tidied up. Roses have not been at their best this summer, but we still have a chance to enjoy some blooms in autumn if we do the hard work now. Trim spent flowers, tidy up leaves with black spot and trim off any burnt foliage. Give them a dose of rose food and keep the water up to them, and in a few weeks you should be rewarded with some lovely blooms. Happy gardening.

VET CORNER

FEATURE STORY

Socialisation of puppies GETTING a new puppy is an exciting time. While it is important to ensure your puppy has the correct preventative healthcare such as vaccination and parasite treatment, it is also very important to take steps to positively socialise them with other animals and people, and to expose them to as many situations and places as possible while they are young. This is best done during the critical socialisation period for dogs which lasts from 3-16 weeks of age where social learning is much quicker and easier. Puppies’ experiences during this critical period can inuence and shape their behaviour well into adulthood. To help with this, most veterinary clinics run puppy preschool classes. These are generally weekly one hour evening classes for a month.

VET CORNER THIS week’s pet of the week at Wangaratta RSPCA is Kath, a three year old female domestic shorthair cat who is tabby/tortoiseshell in colour. To see more animals up for adoption at the Wangaratta RSPCA, visit the shelter in Connell Street or phone (03) 5722 2874.

Growing appetite for change

From page 1

The growing role of community organisations in creating change formed part of the inspiration of the festival, explained Trudi. “Communities across Australia and around the world are getting on with the job of creating the future they want to live in,â€? she said. “It’s clear we can’t sit around and wait for government leadership on the most pressing issues. “Increasingly, it’s communities that are leading the way. “I see two clear patterns emerging here. “The ďŹ rst is that everywhere you turn, you encounter the most wretched of problems. “In this summer alone, we’ve recorded the hottest January on record, witnessed devastating freshwater ďŹ sh kills, heard that global insect populations are plummeting, and on a national and international level, we’ve seen empathy and compassion for those that need it most twisted into a narrative that instead stokes fear and division. “But there’s also another pattern emerging in society, and it’s one that offers tremendous hope. “In growing numbers, people and communities are demonstrating their deep concern and responsibility to each other and to our natural world through actions big and small. “Communities are working together, planning, mobilising and getting busy shaping the future they want to live in, and that’s very inspiring.â€? Trudi urged anyone interested to attend the festival. “Come along, learn some skills, build some networks and then go forth and give your energy, ideas and capacity back to your community to make a real difference,â€? she said. Sarah Thompson, part of the Into Our )BOET 'PVOEBUJPO BOE BNPOH UIPTF organising the festival, said that for Into 0VS )BOET iPVS GPDVT IBT CFFO UP TVQ port elements of the program that get the community to think differently about

resourcing their community projects, and build skills and knowledge about how you fundraise for the long termâ€?. Sarah said that the organisation wants to build the capacity of local non proďŹ t organisations in order for them to leverage more funding for their work and better service the region and its residents. “We are supporting the philanthropy, resourcing and fundraising side of the program,â€? she said. This includes securing local speakers and experts in grant writing and proposal pitching, sessions on the value of philanthropy engagement and building philanthropic relationships, and much more. Sarah added that the growing success of grassroots movements in the region covering everything from renewable energy to advocating for refugees has been inspiring for those behind the festival. “From our perspective we have watched these grass roots organisa-

tions grow and evolve, they all get to the stage where they need more support – speciďŹ cally resources and funding – but they don’t necessarily have the philanthropy networks to secure funding when they need it,â€? she said. “We think the philanthropy side of the program is crucial for these groups and movements to learn the vital skills of fund development and fundraising to help get the attention of national funders and build those important relationships with donors who can take a risk with them and support their cause.â€? Organisations involved in mounting the Beechworth Festival for Change are The Resilience Planning Community of Practice, Words For Change, Australian 3FTJMJFODF $FOUSF *OUP 0VS )BOET $PN munity Foundation, Cause and Effect Consultancy, and Quercus Beechworth. ◆ BROWN DELIGHT: A lovely brown trout that I caught in a small North East Victorian stream on a jointed minnow on the weekend. The trout fishing should start to pick up now as we head into autumn, but low water flows might be a problem in many streams.

THINGS are changing. The Murray cod slowdown has begun. Each year the Murray cod fishing slows down in the Wangaratta region around late summer and early autumn, and this year is no exception. The slowdown has already begun and the Murray cod fishing has become hit and miss over the last couple of weeks. Don’t write the fishing off just yet though. Some of my best Murray cod fishing has been in March and April. The fish do not just completely stop biting, they just become more incon-

sistent with their feeding in the cooling water. It is still well worth fishing for Murray cod for the next couple of months. You might catch heaps or you might catch none. Bait fisherman will most likely find the most consistent Murray cod fishing. Lake Mulwala is a little bit the opposite, as this is the time of year when the fishing starts to pick up - a quick chat to Vanessa Bennet at Lake Mulwala Fish Camp Ski late last Friday has ensured me the lake has started fishing very well over the last couple of weeks. Lake Mulwala is well worth fishing

over the next few months. The upside to the cooling water is that the trout are starting to get more active. I have fished a number of small tributaries of both the Ovens and King rivers over the last week and found that the trout are showing more willingness to feed than they were a few weeks back. I have been catching a few trout on a jointed minnow lure as well as a Royal Stimulator dry fly. For the bait fisherman, floating grasshoppers would be a dynamite way to target trout in the streams at the moment.

Cooling down with fruit WHAT a harsh summer this has been. DAYS on end of 40 degrees, multiple days of 45 and the so called ‘cool change’ of 35 degrees at the end of it all. I find summer to be a time when people struggle to get enough of the right foods and nutrients. This might seem weird when it is the season of tropical fruits and berries, but the heat zaps digestive strength and during the festive season we often drink too much alcohol and use carbonated beverages to cool down and replace lost sugar/energy. Feb Fast is just about to end, and it is great that momentum has grown around using February as a month to detox from Christmas and New Year and start new health goals. However, we also notice that many replace beer with soft drinks trying to

quench their thirst after work/to replace relaxing effect of alcohol at the end of the day. Given we crave refreshing, thirst quenching alternatives to water in the heat and that we require lots more energy from fluids in summer, why not use the last weekend of Feb (this Sat) to learn about some herbal mocktails, tonics, wild sodas, squashes and infusions to mix and serve at home with or without alcohol. Herbal and fruit based drinks can provide electrolytes, nutrients, energy, and even become a source of medicine to regulate digestion, hormones, energy and mood. Traditionally herbalists turned homegrown and foraged fruits, herbs and flowers into herbal syrups and infusions to use in mocktails and cocktails

(yes, you can see your naturopath and enjoy moderate amounts of alcohol too). In fact, herbalist history is steeped in traditional use of using alcohol to preserve medicines and excess produce! Rather than giving up alcohol forever, why not aim for one extra alcohol free night a week and use the syrups and infusions from homegrown and foraged fruit, herbs and edible flowers in health promoting drinks and refreshing herbal mocktails. Then, at your next party, use these same infusions as a base to beautiful fancy cocktails. For those wanting to look after their non-drinking guests and their own livers, we think it is fun to experiment with herbal mocktails, call the clinic for workshop details.

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ HARD MODE: With the fall in stock prices of industry big hitters EA and Activision Blizzard, developers have felt the brunt of the cost.

Game industry woes hit Australian shores AS anyone with an interest in video game development could tell you, the industry has always been a tumultuous one. Largely, it’s an unavoidable reality given the sheer nature of the beast. A video game of any reasonable quality and scale takes years to develop, and there are so many moving parts to the endeavour, and so many people of different disciplines required to make it, that it takes gargantuan effort on the part of development leaders to bring their vision together. Writers, concept artists, asset artists, animators, coders, marketers and executive producers (to name just a few roles) all need to band together to create a cohesive product that turns enough profit to fund their next project when their product finally hits the shelves. A single failure can spell the doom of a

development studio. But over the last two decades, the industry has grown enormously. Once the purview of a relatively small number of enthusiastic fans - predominantly young males - the audience for video games has expanded in both breadth and depth, encompassing people of all ages both male and female. Along with this expanded consumer base and increased enthusiasm, stock prices increased dramatically as well, with two companies becoming the big wigs of the game development industry - Activision-Blizzard and Electronic Arts. For a while, it seemed like a golden era for the industry. Both game development and gamers had matured. The innovation and technical ability on display in each title with each passing year seemed to ramp up as studios sought to out do their competitors.

The hobby itself was no longer marginalised, in fact it became so popular it spawned two brand new, multimillion dollar industries - esports and game streaming. But then something happened in 2018. The share price of the biggest giants in the industry took a violent nose dive. Why did this happen? Ironically, it was likely an inevitable consequence of the sudden growth of the industry. Growth begets investor interest. And, upon investing in a gaming company, that investor has expectations. But what does the average investor know about the production of video games? Aside from a select few, they don’t know much at all. All an investor really cares about is how much the share price is going to increase, year after year. Every new game that is launched has to sell better

than the last or heads will roll. And how does a game developer go about ensuring that? They mitigate risks by reselling the same popular game, year in and year out, with only minor, surface changes. If your neck is on the line, you’d be less than enthralled by the prospect of a new IP that hasn’t been tried and tested. That’s why Activision’s has released Call of Duty reskins 20 times (and counting) since the inception of the franchise in 2003. And it’s why Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed franchise has seen 11 main entries and 17 spin off titles. Such a strategy worked, for a while at least. But eventually consumers got tired, and angry, of being foisted the same derivative title every few months. Couple that with an oversaturation of the marketplace,

and some very predatory microtransaction practices in the form of loot boxes, and game producers like Electronic Arts and Activision had found that in their endless bid to feed ravenous investors they had alienated the very people generating that revenue in the first place - their player base. As a consequence, Activision’s stock value dropped 43 per cent between October and December of 2018, and Electronic Arts dropped 47 per cent in that same period. Both stock values have begun to limp upward again, but neither company has come even close to the value they had gradually built over the last decade or so. With this result, layoffs were inevitable, and this year has seen some pretty awful news about staff redundancies. Last week, Activision-Blizzard fired 800 employees despite the company still managing to increase its profit margin by $500 million over

No job too big or small. We can handle it. Get

the previous year (even with all the trouble brewing). This move sparked outrage from the industry’s fledgling union movement, Game Workers Unite, who called for Activision-Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick to be fired. “Upending 800 workers’ lives while raking in millions in bonuses for you and your csuite buddies isn’t leadership, it’s theft,” said a union representative. And the bad news hit Australian shores as well, with Electronic Arts declaring that some 40 to 50 employees in their Melbourne-based development studio - Firemonkeys - would be made redundant. Those 40 to 50 people represent 10 per cent of the industry in Australia, so this news is absolutely devastating for video game development in Australia. The industry certainly seems set for an upheaval this year, it just remains to be seen what shape that will take.

Women are bad mothers and desperate housewives CHANNEL CHAT

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS:

SHOW: Bad Mothers CHANNEL: Nine TIME: Monday, 9pm

Get Krack!n (Wednesdays 9pm, ABC) This show focuses on disability as hosts Kate McLennan and Kate McCartney take a satirical swipe at early morning TV. Ms Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries (Thursdays, 8.30pm Prime7) Please refer to last Wednesday’s review by Shane Douthie of this new series set in the 60s.

with Leah Anderson Byrne LAST week, a new program appeared on our television screen which aims to be a relatable depiction of mothers who are not quite perfect, and are therefore, clearly ‘bad’. The Australian television drama series centres around five women whose lives collide following a series of shocking events and learn that life can get a whole lot

more complicated, outrageous and fun, than they ever imagined. Shalom Brune-Franklin, Tess Haubrich, Mandy McElhinney, Jessica Tovey and Melissa George play five mothers juggling parenthood, social and personal drama as best they can. Addressing the series’ title and the name adopted by Danielle and her pals, Tovey

Gogglebox (Thursdays, 8.30pm Win) Always a big yes to this wonderfully humorous show, guaranteed to make you giggle. ◆ WONDERFUL WOMEN: Being a bad mother just means you aren’t perfect, but who is?

said, “To me, the main reason for that name is because women often feel that they are bad if they’re not perfect at everything. “That if they can’t have a career and be a perfect wife and get to the gym all the

time and be a great friend, that somehow they’re failing at being a woman, which is completely unfair and ridiculous. So these women have taken ownership of that name and gone, ‘Great, we’re not perfect,

so we’re the bad mothers,” The eight-part Melbournebased series has already been compared to the program ‘Desperate Housewives’ but much like the housewives weren’t exactly ‘desperate’; these mothers

aren’t exactly ‘bad’, they’re just mothers. Also similar to the mystery that initially drove ‘Desperate Housewives’, Bad Mothers has a death in its opening episode, as well as an arrest and an ongoing investigation.
