A forgotten history By ASHLEIGH PILES
BLINK and you will miss the tiny town of Murmungee, roughly 18 kilometres from Myrtleford, and populated by just 153 people. The annual Pumpkin and Harvest Festival and the iconic local hall are its best known features for many people. But historian Royce Sample has managed to dig up hundreds of years of history about the town that was once a gold mine to honour Murmungee Hall’s 150th birthday. Mr Sample, who once taught history at schools in Footscray, Boort, and Yarram before becoming a Landcare coordinator for Burgoigee Creek, said it was about time the town’s history was uncovered. “I’ve lived here for 35 years and I know these people pretty intimately and I thought I knew a lot,” he said. “But when I started to do this, I realised I didn’t know anything.” “I actually started the book with a quote ‘you can’t know where you’re going unless you know where you came from.’” After a year of research Mr Sample’s findings were published in a 213-page hardcover and it focuses on the Bowmans-Murmungee district earliest history. Like every good book, the title tells an interesting story.

age of 4 online purchases each year. With $96 reported as the average spend per online purchase; the potential annual loss of not returning items which you never intend to use is $384 a year - that’s flights for a holiday, a new vacuum cleaner or your morning coffee costs covered for almost 4 months. “As with all expenses, it’s important to keep track of what you spend because little things can add up to a large amount that may be best spent, or saved elsewhere,” said Read. “The ease and convenience of ordering items online doesn’t always match the time and effort involved in returning items, so be prepared for that, unless you’re willing to absorb the loss. “It can be tempting to let it slide ‘this time’ and choose not to return a low cost online purchase, but if you’re like most online shoppers, chances are it’s not a once-off occurrence and the costs add up, fast,” said Read.
◆ BE PREPARED: Autumn is the ideal time to do some soil preparation both in garden beds and pots.
Gardening in the changing season
I AM sure we can all agree that although the calendar says it is autumn the weather is certainly not behaving that way. So what does this mean for your garden? There are still a few jobs we can do now in preparation. At this time of the year most of us would have already been busy out in the yard. Trimming, feeding, digging and, unfortunately, still watering. The reality is that after a long, hot and dry summer it is particularly hard to find the motivation to get outside and enjoy the garden once more. For many of us it has become a chore and has simply been a matter of keeping things alive. The good news is Autumn weather is just around the corner (surely!) so get out those gardening gloves and get stuck into a few things we can do now. Although you may be reluctant to plant just yet it is a good time to do
some soil preparation both in garden beds and pots. Summer annuals in pots would have provided you with a lovely display during the warm months. If they are still flowering well leave them where they are for the time being. But, if looking tired and ratty pull the plants and refresh the potting mix for the coming season. You can reuse some potting mix but you must add compost and fertiliser (slow release) to replace what has been leached out with summer watering. If the potting mix is very dry and not holding water it is best to start with fresh. Tip the old mix into your compost or on a bare patch in the garden. It doesn’t need to go to waste. Garden beds will really benefit from some extra love now. If your soil is looking ‘tired’, dry, compacted and not holding water well, add compost and well rotted manure. This will help

replenish nutrients and improve the structure of your soil. Organic matter will also encourage more worm activity. Worms do an amazing job in the garden so a good soak will provide the moist environment they need to get busy. Sprinkle around some complete fertiliser while the ground is still warm and your plants will respond with a lovely flush of growth and flowers before they slow down for the cooler months. Liquid feed your pots for a late display of colour. Although you would generally plant your sweet peas by St Patrick’s day you still have plenty of time. Plant in the next few weeks for a beautiful spring display. Sweet peas are happy both in pots or the ground so I’m sure you can find a spot that suits your garden style. Happy gardening

DIGITAL technologies like online shopping have made our lives easier, but that convenience can come at a cost if you’re not careful, according to a new ME study. ME surveyed 1000 Australian adults and found that the majority of Aussies aren’t always returning their unwanted online purchases, with 70 per cent admitting to have not returned an online purchase that wasn’t quite right (wrong size, fit, quality etc.). “It’s important to consider the online shopping experience as a whole, with returns making up a significant part of the process. “It’s not over when you get your item; what you choose to do with the item at that point is a deciding factor between a healthy or hurt hip pocket,” said ME Money Expert Matthew Read. The research was commissioned to explore the potential cost of online returns behaviour, and found that Aussies typically want to return an aver-

miniature schnauzers. If your dog is diagnosed with cataracts, the first thing your vet might do is to run a blood test to rule out diabetes as a cause. If this is negative, then the options include management with medication for secondary effects such as uveitis or surgery to remove the lens. Unfortunately, as cataracts progress, they can begin to leak lens protein inside the eye. This causes inflammation inside the eye, called Lens Induced Uveitis (LIU). This is painful and can be difficult to manage if severe. Thus, surgery is usually a better option in the long term and is more successful if done early in the disease process. If you notice any changes to your pets eyes, it is best dealt with sooner rather than later, so these conditions can be managed in the best way possible for your pet.

◆ RIGHT AT HOME: Royce Sample said there is more to Murmungee than meets the eye.

“The locals thought of the name, ‘Gold, Grog and Good Ground’,” Mr Sample said. “This is a gold area and there were 13 hotels within ten kilometres, so you didn’t have to go far for a drink, so people really drank to excess.” “And those hotels don’t even exist anymore, the last one to operate in this area is on the left-hand side right by the highway and there’s actually a picture of it in the book but it was turned into private residence which is what usually happened with hotels.” The story dives into the evolution of the convicts, the Aboriginal squatters, and gold across the district in what Mr Sample described as revolutionary for regional Australia.
ALBURY-WODONGA
ANTIQUES & COLLECTABLES FAIR
Mr Sample said the district is steeped in fascinating history and locals will be surprised at the heritage of some of their ancestors. “There are a lot of families still around that would have some connection to a chapter in the book and I don’t think they would even be aware of it,” he said. “People just didn’t want to know about what was happening and now I think Australians need to lift their game about their history.” “I only did this as the first chapter and hopefully someone else will come along to write the next edition.” Gold, Grog and Good Ground will be launched at Murmungee Hall’s 150th celebrations this Saturday, March 30 with all proceeds going towards bringing home the iconic fire cart.
“The first section of the book is about the big forces that made this town, you can’t understand what happened here unless you know what went on in their wider world,” he said. “Gold discoveries in Beechworth and the Buckland led to much traffic through the Basin and the Buckland riot led to a number of Chinese settling in the district.” “Gold was also instrumental in the government’s attempts to open the squatters land for selection which helped at least 10 early selectors buy their first last along the Burgoigeee Creek in 1857.” “This place is just a very good case study of rural Australia and the influences of how rural Australia developed as the best thing for this country.”

AS dogs age the lens in their eyes changes as a part of the normal aging process. The lens becomes denser as our pets age and thus they become slightly cloudy and start to look more grey or blue in colour. This change doesn’t affect vision or cause any other issues with the eyes. Cataracts on the other hand is the ‘opacification of the lens’. This is when either the entire lens or a part of the lens becomes totally opaque and looks white or silver. This does effect vision. The lens is normally clear and transparent, but when a cataract forms the lens protein goes cloudy. There are many potential causes of a cataract, some of these include genetic defects, nutritional deficiency, elevated blood glucose, electric shock and faulty embryogenesis. However, the vast majority are inherited or from an unknown cause. Common breeds this occurs in include miniature poodles, American cocker spaniels and

kayak in at the junction of the Ovens and King rivers at Wangaratta, fished my way upstream to the old Wilson Road swimming hole, then drifted all the way back making hundreds of casts with a few different lures. I didn’t get a touch….nothing, despite the Ovens River looking fantastic - but perhaps the fish do not agree? Over the weekend the Murray cod fishing reports were scattered right across North East Victoria. Some people caught fish and others didn’t. By and large the Murray cod fishing can be best described as patchy in North East Victoria at the moment.
At the same time, I have seen photos of some truly massive Murray cod caught in Lake Mulwala over the last week. Most of these big fish have been over 100cm long and have been caught on a variety of surface lures. There have also been some nice Murray cod and yellowbelly caught in Lake NIllahcootie over the last week. Most fish have been small but there has been a few decent sized fish of each species caught. Terry Alexander went over there last week to try and catch a few himself and managed a nice 57cn Murray cod on a live shrimp as well as a few small redfin.

LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION
AUTUMN sure can be a frustrating time of the year to go fishing in North East Victoria with red hot fishing one day and the total opposite the next. Early last week I went fishing in Wangaratta and had a magic evening - managing to catch three nice Murray cod between 30cm and 50cm in quick succession at twilight. Two were caught on an old mate lure and one was caught on a Koolabung codwalker surface lure. The following evening I went out with Brett Corker, and he managed to catch a nice Murray cod on a Sweetwater surface lure, but I didn’t catch a fish. Fast forward two days, and I put my

A fart a day (or 14) keeps the doctor away NATUROPATHY and gut health have always gone together. Let’s face it, naturopaths are just good at getting people to talk about farts and to produce better poo! Poo with less stink, poo with less pain and discomfort and poo of superior form. It is our claim to fame. If you cant poo, see a naturopath, if you poo too much, see a naturopath. I stand by my claim, that if I can help you to poo well, sleep well and have a laugh, 9/10 you will refer a friend and be very satisďŹ ed with the work we have achieved together. Those who fart excessively, (now deďŹ ned as > one an hour, 22 a day) may have a food intolerance (dairy is a key) or artiďŹ cial sweeteners (soft drinks, lollies etc) or loads of cruciferous vegetables. If it is the stench you are concerned about, excess eggs, meat or general poor gut bacteria may be the problem. FOOD TALK
Gapsted Wines
2017 Ballerina Canopy Chardonnay WITH bushďŹ res still burning away in the distant ranges and little movement in the air, it can feel a little like we are living in seasonal limbo, waiting for a good downpour to freshen things up. It makes life difficult for those who are sensitive to poor air quality, and the rest of us begin to appreciate how important our sense of smell is to everything we enjoy, especially food, wine and the great outdoors. Perhaps when it’s not the best time to go out and smell the roses, it is a good time to head in and enjoy a long lunch, before conditions change and we’re inclined to garden again. A good all-rounder to enjoy with most menus is a chardonnay like Gapsted’s Ballerina Canopy – especially when just lightly chilled so it’s not too cold. The wine has melon and peach fruit aromas which work
with Anita McPherson perfectly well with an entrĂŠe of chargrilled vegetables using the abundance of zucchinis, tomatoes and capsicums around at this time of year. There is a pleasant weight to the golden wine, with stone fruit avours and a nougat-like creaminess which surrounds the mouth and stay with you through to a main course of maybe chicken or seafood. The citrus edge at the ďŹ nish is perfectly palate cleansing, getting you ready to tuck into some ďŹ gs, perhaps studded with blue cheese and drizzled with honey for dessert. It’s lucky having a healthy appetite is always in season. Try it at the cellar door and restaurant in Gapsted or go to www.gapstedwines.com.au.

Baked blackberry brie THIS recipe, courtesy of Megann Evans for Fresh Aussie Berries, is a decadent treat during peak Australian rasberry and blackberry season (November-May). It serves approximately eight people. More recipes like this can be found at www.freshberries.com.au. Method - compote Place blackberries or raspberries, caster sugar, lemon, water and vanilla in a saucepan and simmer over a low heat until sugar has dissolved and has thickened slightly, approximately 5-10 minutes. Do not boil - it will continue to thicken slightly as it cools. Transfer bowl of compote to fridge and leave at least 1-2 hours before
serving (the mixture will keep in the fridge for up to three days, or freeze for three months). Method - brie Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Prepare the brie by shaving off the top of the white rind on one side. Position onto a tray lined with baking paper, then arrange blackberries and scatter small dollops of blackberry compote in between the berries. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until the brie is soft and gooey. Sprinkle with pistachio nuts and desired herbs and serve immediately.

TECH & SCIENCE
with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au â—† WHAT A SMILE: The Tyrannosaurus Rex has captured our imagination for decades as the pure embodiment
of prehistoric ďŹ erceness, savagery and majesty.
Long live the king - the Tyrannosaurus Rex THIS Week, in celebration of the new Tyrannosaurus Rex exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, which runs from March until August, I thought I’d take a look at some of the facts surrounding this ďŹ erce and wonderful creature from the prehistoric era. T. Rex has captured the imagination of millions and is arguably the most iconic of all dinosaurs, with a starring role in the Jurassic Park ďŹ lms, as well as making an appearance in a bevy of other forms of popular media. Whether T. Rex is a creature of wonder or fear for you personally, one thing is for certain - he knows how to make an impact. When was T. Rex ďŹ rst discovered? The very ďŹ rst partial specimen was unearthed in 1902 at the famous Cretaceous-age Hell Creek Formation in Montana by paleontologist Barnum Brown, who later sold this specimen to
the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh. Six years later he found an even more complete skeleton (including a well-preserved skull) which would form the basis for the American Museum of Natural History’s (AMNH) famous mount of the superlative dinosaur in New York. In 1905, the curator of the AMNH Henry FairďŹ eld Osborn dubbed the specimen Tyrannosaurus Rex. The name Tyrannosaurus Rex means “king of the tyrant lizardsâ€?: “tyrannoâ€? means tyrant in Greek; “saurusâ€? means lizard in Greek, and “rexâ€? means “kingâ€? in Latin. A formidable ďŹ gure Coming in at up to 13 feet (four metres) tall at the hips (the beast’s highest point since it did not stand erect) and 40 feet (12.3 m) long, Tyrannosaurus Rex was one of the largest land carnivores of all time.
of rock formations dating to the Maastrichtian age of the upper Cretaceous period, which lasted from 67 million to 65 million years ago, toward the end of the Mesozoic Era. It was among the last of the nonavian dinosaurs to exist prior to the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event, which wiped out the dinosaurs. More mobile than many other land-based dinosaurs, T. Rex roamed throughout what is now western North America, at the time an island continent identiďŹ ed as Laramidia. More than 50 skeletons of T. Rex have been unearthed, according to National Geographic. Some of these remains are nearly complete skeletons, and at least one skeleton included soft tissue and proteins. What did T. Rex eat? T. Rex was a huge carnivore and primarily ate herbivorous dinosaurs,
T. Rex weighed around 9 tons on average (about 8160 kilograms). Recent analysis of a T. Rex fossil nicknamed ‘Scotty’ - which was discovered in 1991 - have conďŹ rmed it is the largest specimen discovered yet, supplanting the former largest specimen - Sue. Nicknamed for a celebratory bottle of scotch the night it was discovered, Scotty has leg bones suggesting a living weight of more than 8800 kilograms, making it bigger than all other carnivorous dinosaurs. The bones were encased in sandstone, which took more than a decade to remove. It’s only recently, after several more years piecing together the specimen like a jigsaw puzzle, that scientists have been able to study Scotty in his full glory. When and where did T. Rex live? T. Rex fossils are found in a variety
including Edmontosaurus and Triceratops. The predator acquired its food through scavenging and hunting, grew incredibly fast and ate hundreds of pounds at a time. For many years, the evidence that T. Rex actually hunted for its meals was circumstantial and included such things as bones with bite marks, teeth near carcasses and foot tracks suggesting pursuits. But in a 2013 study in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, University of Kansas paleontologist David Burnham and his colleagues unveiled direct evidence of T. Rex’s predatory nature: a T. Rex tooth embedded in a duckbill dinosaur’s tailbone, which healed over the tooth (meaning the duckbill got away). “We found the smoking gun! Burnham said. “With this discovery, we now know the monster in our dreams is real.

Pickering your way through the big news good to have a lighter take on the not so light and fun
CHANNEL CHAT
Billy Connolly: Made In Scotland. (Prime7 9.15pm Monday) Part 2 of 2. Takes a look at the life and career of Scottish stand-up comedian Billy Connolly, who I adore.
SHOW: The Weekly with Charlie Pickering CHANNEL: ABC TIME: 8.30pm Wednesday
Married At First Sight (Nine, 7.30pm Monday) I wanted to highlight that this is not a TV highlight and is such a silly show, and that’s coming from someone who religiously watches all the bachelor shows.
with Leah Anderson Byrne THE series return of yet another satirical news program appeared on televisions last week as The Weekly with Charlie Pickering began its exciting fifth season. According to ABC network, The Weekly is “your reliable source for down to the minute news, every seven days”. “Some shows have all the news all the time but we sepa-
cross to a specialised corre-
an interview with a THIS WEEK’S TVspondent, HIGHLIGHTS:
rate the wheat from the chaff and ask the big questions,” they said. Charlie Pickering, Tom Gleeson and Adam Briggs are joined by new “superstar correspondent” comedian Judith Lucy to dig up the funniest and stupidest moments from the news, which isn’t hard in this current political and social environment.
True Story With Hamish & Andy (Nine, 7.45pm Tuesday) Always a laugh with comedy duo Hamish and Andy, this show, where Australians recount hilarious true stories, is another beauty. ◆ BACK AGAIN: The dream team (from left) Adam Briggs, Charlie Pickering and Tom Gleeson are back, with comedian Judith Lucy, for the fifth season of their satirical news program.
The big question is…can the team outlast another Prime Minister in 2019? Last Wednesday’s program featured the NZ Christchurch massacre and Fraser Anning’s
disgusting response to it and, of course, the legendary egg boy who did what many may have dreamed of doing. I always enjoy a good satirical news program, it’s
news we do see nowadays. Similar to the hilarious Shaun Micaleff ’s Mad as Hell and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, the program provides a selection of the past week’s news stories interspersed with jokes. The show also features a
guest, a sketch or story and a spin off quiz show entitled Hard Quiz. So really it’s just an all-round good time, and something you don’t have to think too hard about if you want to catch up on the week’s news.
