IT is a ritual enacted throughout Australia, in venues ranging from country halls to hotel ballrooms. Proud parents and friends look on as dapper young men in suits and young women dressed in ethereal white take to the dance floor to perform a sweeping waltz to a traditional Pride of Erin. And guiding them all to this point is the humble debutante instructor. And while, in Australia at least, the balls have become less an introduction to society than a way for youngsters to learn new skills, instructors agree it is still a valuable rite of passage for youth. Wangaratta’s Deb Ravida is a keen ballroom dancer and instructor who has teamed up with husband Dom in the past few years to help many teenagers make their debuts in school and sporting club balls. A dancer since childhood, she likes to help modernise debutante balls by including a fun, choreographed dance to the evening’s proceedings in addition to the traditional ballroom dancing from the New Vogue, Latin American or Modern genres. Smiling, she said the best part of being an instructor is helping young people learn new skills and gain more confidence in themselves. “They’re a beautiful age,” she said of her young charges. continued page |

Hay fever and sinus

Spring is in the air

WITH MICHELLE COSE, ND

NATUROPATH

AH-CHOO: There are many natropathic solutions that can help alleviate the symptoms of hay fever.

Salt water nasal sprays can provide instant moisture to dry nasal passages and reduce infection. These are a more convenient take on the traditional “neti pots” which are used in traditional medicine for sinus. Neti Pots are tea pot-like pots used to pour water into the nostrils as a rinse. Salt water sprays are a convenient, “carry with you” alternative. Lastly, an allergy test with a naturopath or doctor is a good idea if

hay fever is severe and unrelenting. Additional sources of irritation such as pet hair, excessive dust, and/or food intolerances just add burden on a body which is already under stress. Eliminating or treating these allergens can help greatly with your sinus. Hopefully this will encourage you to get out into the garden for healthy exercise and out and about our stunning local area on your legs or bike (watch for them magpies) and enjoy the beautiful spring.

SPRING is definitely in the air. Gardens are transforming from the starkness of winter as the plants awake and burst into growth with luscious green foliage and gorgeous flowers. As winter fades, gardens are already brimming with color. The whites and yellows of daffodils and jonquils in full bloom, which will continue to flower through to mid spring, herald the arrival of spring. Tulips make a brilliant display with their bold colors of red, yellow, white, purple and everything in between. The striking port wine magnolia, with its purple tinged tulip-like flowers and the dainty white petals of the star magnolia on bare branches, create a dramatic presence in any garden. Beautiful wattles with their fragrant balls of golden color reminiscent of the sun bring warmth to the color palette. Willow branches are tinged with green as the budding leaves slowly emerge. Purple hues are found in the flowers of the perennial wallflower “winter joy”, lavenders and the native rambler Hardenbergia. Helleborus or winter rose feature nodding flowers of purple, white, green and pink and the air is filled

We welcome new patients and offer same day emergency appointments.

with the exotic perfume of daphne, honeysuckle and stocks. The bright red, new growth and cream flowers of photinia, even more brilliant in hedges, stand out against the green of the older leaves. The flowering winter annuals including calendulas, pansies, primulas and polyanthus bring colour to pockets in the garden. Azaleas are budding, with some in bloom, even lawns are starting to grow and thicken, along with the dreaded weeds, proclaiming the end of winter. But the best sign is the pink and white blossom of fruit trees. As the petals of an early spring blossom falls and carpets the ground with confetti, another blossom tree is budding up ready to burst into bloom. Enjoy the changing seasons. Happy gardening!

IN our beautiful North East region we are blessed with stunning inland mountains and open farming plains. Without the coastal drafts, the airborne pollens that burst forth at springtime hover thick in the air we breathe. If you are one of the many that suffer with hay fever in the North East, here are the Naturopathic top five tips to reduce the discomfort: Vitamin C with Zinc in a powdered form is a nondrowsy anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine, which reduces the itching and redness of the eyes, throat and nasal passages. Add a teaspoon in a glass of water twice daily. To put a stronger barrier between the inside nasal throat and lung linings against the outside air pollens, chewable flaxseed or good tasting fish oil capsules work exceptionally well. We prefer flaxseed capsules because you can use up to 10 per day safely. Keep your water intake high to maintain a moist throat and wet tongue at all times. Carry a small drink bottle with your car keys when you leave the house, keep a bottle with you to sip on. Pollens irritate a dry throat much more.

VETS CORNER

Disc disease in pets PEOPLE aren’t the only ones who can ‘slip a disc’, our furry friends are also at risk. The backbone or spine is made up of many bones called vertebrae which protect the spinal cord, running from our skull to our tail bone. The spinal cord is responsible for getting all of the messages or nerve signals from our brain to everywhere else in the body, and is responsible for all movements and sensations. In between the vertebrae are intervertebral discs, which act like cushions between the bones. The intervertebral discs are made up of two parts – the outside shell (annulus fibrosis) and the jelly-like inside (nucleus pulposus) with cartilage each side connecting the discs to the bones. There are two types of intervertebral disc disease; Type 1 is characterised by the the soft, inner nucleus pulposus becoming calcified and hard. If put under pressure by an awkward jump by the dog, this now hard disc material breaks though the outer annulus fibrosis and can cause compression of the spinal cord. This is commonly known as a ‘slipped disc’ and will show as a sudden inability to walk,

“It bonds them, they end up sealing new friendships and it gives them a little bit of confidence. “For a lot of kids, it’s all about dressing up. “And the boys love suiting up too. “The boys get equally as excited as the girls do.” Deb said she often takes the opportunity to share her own philosophy with ball participants. “I tell them life doesn’t owe you a favor, you’ve got to get out there and grab what you want,” she said, smiling at ball and life partner Dom, whom she met while pursuing her dancing passions. “He is a great backstop for me,” she said. Bubbly Wangaratta High School students Maddie Vearing and Max Dewez are among Deb’s most recent debutantes. Maddie said being part of the debutante tradition helped her step out of her comfort zone and strengthened her friendships. “I wanted to try ballroom dancing, and it’s something we wouldn’t normally do,” she said, with Max adding that “it was nice to have a night where we were all seen as being mature”. Debutante balls are just as much a passion

for those living in the alpine areas, if the experiences of former debutante instructor Margaret Wilson are anything to go by. Margaret, alongside friend David Robinson, trained more than 600 teenagers over the course of 20 years, for deb balls from the local Lions club and SES to Bright P-12 College. She said they were always memorable evenings and debs still approach her on the street to this day. “They say, ‘you taught me to dance’…it was a really lovely time,” she said. While girls receive a lot of attention at debutante balls, Margaret never forgot that it was the boys’ time to shine as well. “I always made it equal, and never let the girls override the boys,” she said. Her own love of dance stemmed from being taught traditional dances when she was younger, and going out regularly to balls in the area. And she believed the skills learnt by debs never go to waste. “You may not use it for 10 years,” she said, “but I’ll bet there’ll be a time in your life when you’re asked to dance.”

depending on the degree of compression. This occurs most commonly in younger or middle aged dogs. Type 2 disc disease is a slower, degenerative process of the annulus fibrosis causing a chronic compression of the spinal cord. We see this more in middle aged to older dogs. Signs vary depending on the site and type of lesion and can range from chronic pain (type 2) wobbliness or incoordination in the hind legs to acute loss of function of hind or all legs. Any dog who suddenly cannot use their hind limbs should be considered an emergency and should be seen promptly by your vet. In serious, acute cases, emergency surgery at a specialist referral centre may be the only option to reverse the damage to the spinal cord. Julia Smith BVSc, Wangaratta Veterinary Clinic

THE KITCHEN PHILOSOPHER MOVIE

Flight of sorrow

If I Stay [CTC] LIFE changes in an instant for young Mia Hall after a car accident puts her in a coma. During an out-of-body experience, she must decide whether to wake up and live a life far different than she had imagined.

ONCE again, after the two recent tragedies involving international flights, we are shocked at the evil some people will inflict on their fellow humankind. Even in these supposedly enlightened times, when everyone should understand the consequences of war and hatred, there are those for whom property, money, religion and power are still more important than fellowship with their own kind. Civilian planes being shot down over what? A strip of airspace? Access to money making resources? Greed? The ‘right’ ancestry? Clearly these kinds of things are more important to the warmongers than whose little child, mother, father, brother, lover, or friend didn’t make it home. I recall hearing on TV the taped conversation by two (allegedly pro Russian) rebels, apparently discussing the shooting down of the plane over the Ukraine. Even though I couldn’t understand their foreign words, I was chilled by the lack of emotion in their voices. It was like they were discussing what they might have for lunch! No sign of shock or remorse, not even a quivering voice; just cold hard statements about the obscene act that had just occurred. Like shooting innocent people out of the sky is an everyday and perfectly acceptable thing to do. I get that these are people trained to be matter of fact about death and destruction, but it still sent a shiver down my spine that they seemed to care so little. Of course, we all know violence and hatred is nothing new to our species. But I had rather hoped by this stage of the game, we might be starting to move to a more enlightened awareness that things work better when you work together. Having said that, I guess there are some wars that must be fought too; where people are oppressed and neglected they must fight for their freedom and rights. And I suppose if you talked to those who are fighting for something this very day, they would each tell you they are fighting for a noble cause.

TICKETS TO THE...

We all like to believe we are right and justified in our actions. I doubt, however, I could ever find a justification for killing and hurting innocent people who have made no war and can’t even attempt to defend themselves. In a time when our world has become so accessible for travellers; where anyone who can afford it can go and see for themselves the amazing sights our planet has to offer, it seems ironic that we so often feel unsafe to do so. I remember travelling to the UK back in 2005. It was my first trip to my Dad’s homeland of Scotland and I was so excited to be finally seeing it. But my excitement was also tinged with trepidation as, only five weeks before we were due to fly out, the horrific ‘London bombings’ took place, killing and maiming innocent commuters as they headed to work. The London tube was eerily quiet when we rode it., which was not surprising; Londoners must have felt so violated and vulnerable. A few years earlier, in September 2002, my own dear friend flew excitedly to Bali on her first ever overseas holiday. She never returned, caught up in someone’s despicable act of terror. Someone who thought they were right and justified in hurting innocent people, and who even smiled for news cameras. And, of course, the year before that, the world watched in horror and disbelief as two planes hurtled into New York’s Twin Towers. That sickening image brought fear into our hearts as we acknowledged that if someone really wants to do us harm, we can’t stop them. But throughout these scary times, I’ve always taken the view that if we stop enjoying our lives, they have achieved their goal. So, as time and money permit, I will continue to pack my bags and visit places I’ve only ever dreamed of seeing. And as my youngest son flies off to Vietnam on holidays, I will say a little prayer, not just for his safe return, but also for the families of those whose loved ones never made it home. And world peace - no harm in asking, I guess. Proudly supported by Wangaratta Rural City Council and auspiced by Jubilee Golf Club Inc.

Michelini Wines

Quesadillas with guacamole

2012 Merlot Around $22.00

A QUESADILLA is basically a Mexican-style stuffed pancake, like a toasted sandwich, made with two tortillas sandwiched together with a cheese-based filling. They are warmed through and served with guacamole and soured cream. They are one of my favorite things to eat. I make them at work a lot, they are light but yummy, great for an afternoon snack or for lunch. Method To make the guacamole I use 2 or 3 ripe avocados, 2 or 3 ripe deseeded tomatoes and a couple of deseeded red chillies, and I throw all this into a food processor with a handful of peeled and chopped spring onions and a good handful of fresh coriander. Once this has been chopped up nice and fine, I add a couple more chopped tomatoes, a good pinch of salt and half of another avocado, chopped, to give it a nice chunky texture. Transfer everything into a bowl and season carefully with sea salt, freshly ground black pepper and a good squeeze of lemon or lime juice. To fill the quesadillas you will need a couple of big handfuls of grated Cheddar, some finely sliced spring onions, a couple of handfuls of chopped fresh coriander, and a red pepper and some red or green chillies all deseeded and finely chopped. Mix all this up in a bowl and then sprinkle half a handful between two layers of tortilla. You can make a few and refrigerate for later at this point. Some people like to fry them in oil, but this makes them greasy and is not all that healthy. You can grill them, but I like to put them in a dry non-stick frying pan on a medium heat, so that after about a minute and a half

WITH ANITA McPHERSON without interruption. The grapes are grown in Michelini’s Buckland Valley vineyard and the wine has an inviting dark red color, a fruity and lightly floral aroma of blackcurrant and herb. The flavor is rich with plums and currant, but there’s also an enjoyable savory edge with a gentle touch of oak. We enjoyed it while nibbling crumbly aged cheddar and some natural peanuts, which had been tossed in pan and sprinkled with salt and pepper, while we contemplated the circle of life. If only raising youngsters and sending them on their way was always this easy. Find it at the cellar door in Myrtleford or visit www. micheliniwines.com.au.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Wangaratta Drama Club, 1870 A MEETING was held on August 27, 1870 at the Council Club Hotel to form a Wangaratta Drama Club. The evening was notable for the presentation of several letters from actors willing to be associated with the company, not the least being from Mr Edward Macready, the son of eminent tragedian WC Macready. The club was duly formed, and the first production was given to benefit the funds of the hospital.

on each side you are left with a really crispy outside and an oozy, stringy filling. To serve the quesadillas cut into quarters, with the guacamole and soured cream, or as I do with our crème fraiche. This recipe is adapted from Jamie’s Dinners. For the guacamole >2 or 3 avocados >4-5 tomatoes onions >2 red chillies handful spring r >1 good handful fresh coriande >Sea salt >Freshly ground black pepper >1 squeeze lemon or lime juice

ANOTHER lambing season is over and this year there were three abandoned babies in need of our attention. Luckily they took to the bottle as enthusiastically as I do, and got through the cold nights by keeping each other warm on an old and shaggy car seat cover. They were so sweet and cute for the first week or so, finishing their milk and then hopping and skipping playfully around the garden. But as their size and confidence grew, they began to attack their bottles like ravenous beasts and nearly bowled me over. I’m just thankful I no longer have to leave the couch and venture out in the dark to give them a feed, and can instead concentrate on what I want to drink. Last night it was Michelini Merlot, recently listed in Winestate’s top 40 best buys, and it’s one I wanted to enjoy

MONEY MATTERS

BUSINESS AND FINANCE

Stop and do not pass go WHAT a red letter day for Wangaratta recently when we saw the opening of the revamped CoStore complex on the same site as the original Co-Operative. I am very aware of some of the criticism levelled at the Rural City of Wangaratta Council in negotiating an agreement with the developers for the provision for you and me of an additional 135 undercover car parks, which we will never own and pay a licence fee on for 20 years. If my memory serves me correctly it cost around $28,000 for each car parking space(but this does not include any land component) and it was estimated that should the council alone try and purchase land within the CBD the cost of the development including land purchase would be about $65,000 per space. So unless council included more than car parking in a proposal then that $65,000 is a realistic estimate. Instead of knocking the development, why not try for yourself what it can offer for the elderly, and mums with babies, on a typical 42 degree summer’s day in Wangaratta. An escalator will take you from the first floor to the front of the Target Store. And it doesn’t matter whether you have a $50 note or a couple of dollar coins or even your credit card, you will pay before leaving the ground floor to retrieve the car. Better than all the parking machines you have to look for in the street, half of which always seem to be inoperable - but a word of warning, you will struggle to get out if you have not validated your ticket and paid the fee. As the free car parking over the river seems to be used by less than 40 per cent, meaning a more expensive car park would not solve our parking

MAKING CENTS OF BITCOINS: Certain taxation regulations do apply to crypto-currencies.

ATO delivers guidance on Bitcoins THE ATO has delivered guidance on the taxation treatment of Bitcoin and other crypto-currencies in time for people to complete their 2013-14 income tax returns. “The guidance paper and draft tax rulings issued today provide certainty for the Australian community on the ATO’s treatment of crypto-currencies within the current legislative framework,” said Senior Assistant Commissioner Michael Hardy. Under the guidance paper and rulings, bitcoin transactions are treated like barter transactions with similar taxation consequences. Generally, there will be no income tax or GST implications for individuals if they are not in business or carrying on an enterprise and they pay for goods or services in bitcoin. Where an individual uses bitcoin to purchase goods or services for personal use or consumption, any capital gain or loss from disposal of the bitcoin will be disregarded as a personal use asset – provided the cost of the bitcoin is $10,000 or less. Individuals who use bitcoin as an investment may be subject to capital gains tax rules when they dispose of it, as they would for shares of similar assets. Businesses will need to record the value of bitcoin transactions as a part of their ordinary income.

They must also charge GST when they supply bitcoin and may be subject to GST when receiving bitcoin in return for goods and services. Record-keeping requirements are similar to other transactions. Where there may be a taxation consequence people should keep records of: t The date of the transaction; t The amount in Australian dollars; t What the transaction was for; and t Who the other party was (even if it is just the bitcoin address). There may be fringe benefit tax consequences for businesses using bitcoin to pay employee salaries. “The ATO has consulted extensively with bitcoin experts, businesses, industry bodies and other external stakeholders to develop this guidance and explain the obligations of bitcoin users. “People involved in buying or selling bitcoin or other crypto-currencies – whether individuals or businesses – are encouraged to read our guidance. “If their circumstances are not covered by the guidance, they can seek a private ruling by contacting us,” said Mr Hardy. The ATO’s guidance paper, rulings and details on the tax treatment of Bitcoin and other crypto-currencies are available online at ato.gov.au.

kclarke@alphalink.com.au problems unless council can find a very central location. I know there are quite a few store vacancies remaining, but I am certain that as people get used to the layout, they will come to enjoy the wide corridors, soft music, and new offerings, which shows the confidence these national brands have in our city. The owners of the complex, who have put their hands in their pockets to the tune of a cool $33 million, have shown great confidence in the rural city by committing to this development which in years to come will still be the jewel in the crown of Wangaratta, as it has for the past 110 years. The owners hope the various features of the development make a significant difference to all business people in Wangaratta, and the wider community, due to more people coming here. It is amazing, but the restrictions placed on us by having the river stopping retail development to the north and the railway line to the west, has seen our CBD compacted so walking to any point within is a fairly comfortable stroll. Shepparton and Albury are two cities in close proximity to Wangaratta which have encouraged fringe development and in Shepparton it seems that the shops on the Benalla Road from the railway line to the end of the CBD are almost all empty. So please, encourage your friends and neighbors to support this investment in our city for the future generations.
