Alana an agent of change
◆ NEW KIND OF WOMAN: After completing her university studies, Alana Johnson was never going to ‘just be’ a farmer’s wife. PHOTO: Mel Guy
By BELINDA HARRISON THE unquestioned privileging of males over females by the Catholic Church and school system that Alana Johnson attended in her formative years worked to create a young feminist before she even knew what the word meant. “Back in the early 1970s the boys were definitely sexist and the belief that girls were not as smart as them was still pervasive,” said the North East resident. “I think this was actually an added incentive for me to ‘show’ them and it became a driver for me to achieve.” And achieve she has, with Alana recently being awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award from La Trobe University which ‘recognises alumni who have demonstrated significant accomplishments for the service of their community, state or nation’. When Alana was completing year 12, the Whitlam Government introduced free tertiary education which saw thousands of young women, including Alana, flock to Australian universities as first generation tertiary students. “I come from four generations of farmers on both sides of my family,” she said. “My parents were both lifelong learners, my father a very progressive farmer and my mother a voracious reader and interested in diverse social issues. “My two sisters and I were encouraged by both our parents to continue our education and create choices in our lives.” At La Trobe University in Bundoora, Alana studied for an arts degree because she ‘didn’t know what else to do’ but she enjoyed university so much that she stayed on and completed a second degree in social work.

with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson and Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) ◆ SNEEZING SEASON: Many people suffer hay fever at this time of year, but there are things you can do to minimise its impact.
Hay fever and allergies IN our beautiful North East region we are blessed with stunning inland mountains and open farming plains. Without the coastal breezes, the airborne pollens that burst forth at springtime hover thick in the air we breathe. If you are one of the many people who suffer with hay fever in the North East, here are the naturopathic top five tips to reduce the discomfort: 1. Nettle Tea - a mineral and vitamin rich tea which provides great antihistamine properties. This is a great way to increase your water intake with a therapeutic kick. But please seek naturopathic advice if you have kidney issues,

Seek naturopathic help to guide you and help create a menu to reduce your symptoms 5. Schedule an allergy test with a naturopath. Additional sources of irritation such as pet hair, excessive dust and food intolerances just add burden on a body which is already under stress. Eliminating or treating these allergens can help greatly with your sinus problems. Hopefully this will encourage you to get out into the garden for healthy exercise and out and about in our stunning local area on your legs or bike (watch out for those magpies!) and enjoy the beautiful “hay season”.

WHEN it comes to fruits and vegetables which divide us, I would consider asparagus up there on the list along with broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage and mushrooms. There are those who love asparagus with a passion but it is also one of those vegetables many of us have experienced awful versions of, whether tinned, old and woody or way overcooked. It’s amazing really how not just the texture but the taste and smell of a vegetable can change so completely when boiled beyond recognition, until it becomes something else completely. I’ve been a little off asparagus, until being served some beautifully thin, young spears which were virtually raw, but for a little blistering on the barbecue. They were sublime - topped with goat’s cheese and a drizzle of olive oil - and shared with a glass of Gapsted Ballerina Canopy Chardonnay. The straw coloured wine made from fruit grown in the King Valley region has aromas of creamy stone fruit with a hint of honeycomb. There’s a pleasant weight to it, with lasting flavours reminiscent of fig and peach fruit, a touch of citrus and all surrounded by a

Alana Johnson: an agent of change Ŷ
From page 1
“By that stage I had developed an interest in social justice and wanted to be part of creating social change,” she said. “My mother and grandmother were both farmers’ wives and I think I became aware from a young age how they felt limited in their lives, with little autonomy or choice and no control over their fertility. “When I returned to rural living, I, like so many other young women, was not satisfied to just be a farmer’s wife or housewife...we had so much to do and so much to achieve.” The passion for enacting social change led Alana to spend the next 35 years in a number of diverse careers from family therapist to spearheading the Rural Women’s Movement, from farm succession planning to rural leadership training and co-founding Voices for Indi. She has also been appointed to ministerial advisory councils and boards due to her unique knowledge of understanding how change happens, how to engage people and communities to take action and her experience in agriculture and
natural resource management. “The common thread throughout my career has been ‘change making’,” she said. “I learnt how people can change, about facilitating empowerment and how to be a change agent. “Often people are so focused on ‘what’ they do and on ‘outputs’ that they can lose sight of good process. “I believe if you get the processes right, the outcomes look after themselves and this is true in families, in communities, in workplaces and in politics. “Simply put, this means knowing your purpose, your ‘why’, being clear and consistent about your values, being genuine about including people and listening to them as well as good planning.” It doesn’t appear that Alana will be slowing down anytime soon - she and her husband, Rob Richardson, have been involved in tree planting and habitat restoration as part of the Regent Honeyeater Project for the past 25 years near their home in Benalla. Alana is also deputy chair of the Victorian Catchment Management Council, a member
of the Victorian Ministerial Council for women’s equality, the chair of the Victorian Women’s Trust, an advisor to the Invisible Farmer project at the Melbourne Museum and to the Victorian Rural Women’s Network, a director of Goulburn Murray Water and a committee member of Voices for Indi which is a local democracy movement established for citizens to have their voices heard and reclaim activate participation in the political process. “The greatest social changes we have witnessed in the 20th century such as women’s suffrage, workers’ rights, black power, gay rights, the women’s movement and the conservation movement have been initiated and led by ordinary citizens, by people power,” she said. “My work these days is about facilitating groups and organisations to be more effective. “I get to be part of the selection committees for the Churchill Fellowship, the Australian Rural Leadership Program, the Rural Women’s Award and the VESKI Fellowship. “I am optimistic about the future for our rural communities and for agriculture.”

◆ CATCH AND RELEASE: Wangaratta angler Terry Alexander with an over sized Murray cod caught in the Ovens River a couple of years ago. The maximum size for Murray cod is 75cm, anything bigger is protected by law and must be returned to the water, as this beautiful fish was.
Murray cod season opens this Sunday MURRAY cod season is almost here. This Sunday, December 1, is the opening day of Murray cod season and many anglers around the region are fired up and ready to go. At the time of writing, the streams are in amazing shape as good as they get. They’re quite low and clear, but not quite all the way down to their summer levels. This weekend I expect that pretty much all known Murray cod techniques should work surface lures (my favourite), spinnerbaits, hard body lures, swimbaits will all be worth trying. Bait fisherman should try bardi grubs, large yabbies or cheese for bait. If you do use a yabbie, don’t be scared to use a really big one. Murray cod love a big food source. That goes for lure fishermen too. Murray cod will freely hit a very large lure. At this stage, I suspect that just about any known Murray cod water will be worth fishing, and around North East Victoria there are plenty of them.

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA When we think Murray cod, we often think of the Ovens, Murray and King rivers. Equally as good, and in some cases better are the lower reaches of the Mitta Mitta River downstream of Tallandoon, the Cudgiewa Creek, lower Kiewa River downstream of Dederang, Buffalo River downstream of Lake Buffalo, the Broken River, Goulburn River and a bit further across the Campaspe River. Gone are the days of only having a small selection of Murray cod fishing spots to choose from. These days Murray cod are much more plentiful and abundant in many waterways. Just remember it is the angler’s responsibility to know the rules and stick to them, so I suggest you grab yourself a copy of the Victorian fishing guide, or download the Vic fishing app to make sure you don’t accidently break the law.
Boosting your memory HOW good is your memory? This week I’d like to look at a few ways in which you can help boost your powers of recollection. This article contains information related to diet, exercise and supplements, and, as always, it’s best to consult a health professional before radically altering your day to day regimen. A good night’s sleep Perhaps the best way to boost your memory and other brain functions is a good night’s rest. Sleep is key time for your brain to solidify the connections between neurons. In one study published in the journal ‘Sleep Medicine’, researchers asked subjects to perform some memory related tasks and then either sleep or stay awake. Those who napped remembered more of the tasks they had performed than did those who stayed up. Seven to nine hours of sleep each day is the general agreed upon amount. Quiet time Meditation improves your concentration and focus, and a still mind is better than a busy one when it comes to storing memories. When under stress, our bodies release cortisol, adrenaline, and CRH (corticotropin-releasing hormone). In small doses, these chemicals are important in a ‘fight or flight’ scenario in which we are confronted with danger. But if we are stressed over a long period of time, these chemicals can change the structure of our hippocampus, de-

stroying nerve endings integral to information flow. A memory jog - literally Exercise is a key way to increase blood flow throughout your body, including your brain, which in turn enlarges the size of your hippocampus (the key area of your brain for memory) and increases the amount of neurotrophic factor proteins which are necessary for long term memory. Food for thought It’s a fairly obvious one, but your brain can’t function correctly without the essential nutrients and chemicals that power it. Blueberries are a key source of substances called anthocyanins, which are brain-boosting antioxidants. Anthocyanins shield the brain against both inflammation and oxidation, which can damage neurons and make them less effective at communicating with one another. Studies suggest that leafy vegetables rich in phytonutrients like vitamin C are also important in fighting against agerelated memory loss and neurological conditions. Smarter supplements Fish oil is one of the best supplements you can take as it contains Docosahexaenoic Acid, an omega-3 fatty acid that decreases the production of memory-inhibiting substances in the brain. Good old vitamin D can help since it “stimulates the growth of new neurons and helps clear protein abnormalities associated with diseases that affect memory, such as dementia,” says David J. Llewellyn, a research fellow in epidemiology and public health at the University of Exeter, in England.
