By KYLIE WILSON THE depths of the human psyche, and the ways in which even the most innocent of settings can be a backdrop for crime inspire North East author Joanna Baker. And local landscapes have inspired her to the point where she continues to write a crime trilogy using the geography of North East towns as a setting. She said she writes simply because she feels driven to. “I don’t know why I write books,” Joanna said. “I just started one day, when my kids were little, and I never seemed to stop,” she said, adding that she also did a PhD in Creative Writing at RMIT. “That helped me to work out exactly what kinds of books I wanted to write, and gave me confidence to do it. “Up until that point, I think I’d been trying to write all kinds of things – the books I thought other people wanted. “And that never really works. “You have to write the books that you write, if that makes sense. “There’s just no other way.” Joanna has caught the attention of readers ever since publishing her novel Devastation Road – set in Yackandandah - in 2004, when it received the Davitt Award from Sisters in Crime for Best Young Adult Novel of the Year. “I set out to write a classical Agatha Christie style clue-puzzle mystery, with dire deeds set in an innocent-place,” she said. “In casting about for a setting, I soon realised I had the perfect peaceful, pretty village right on my doorstep in Yackandandah. “I have followed Devastation Road with two sequels, involving the same main characters, set in Beechworth (The Elsinore Vanish) and Bright (Evermore).”

Poor card habits the norm: study SOME 70 per cent of Australian credit card holders have ‘poor’ habits when it comes to credit card use despite 90 per cent saying they know how credit cards work, according to a new ME study. ME surveyed 1000 credit card holders across seven negative credit behaviours and found 70 per cent engage in at least three, putting them in the ‘poor’ category which can lead to higher credit card costs and an increased risk of ongoing indebtedness. The proportion in the ‘poor’ category rose to 75 per cent among women and 85 per cent among millennials (aged 25-39). Poor credit card habits Typically not paying a credit card off in full each month (27 per cent admitted to this). While not entirely bad if serving a short-term credit need, not paying off your card in full over an extended period will incur more interest charges. Only paying the minimum on a credit card statement (32 per cent admitted to this). While not entirely bad if serving a short-term credit need, only paying the minimum over a longer period of time will incur more interest charges. Buying an item that takes over six months to pay off, excluding special promotions (31 per cent admitted to this). Withdrawing cash from an ATM with a credit card (31 per cent admitted to this).

Accepting a ‘balance transfer’ offer while keeping an old credit card active (19 per cent admitted to this). Concurrently having savings (outside an offset account) and credit card debt (42 per cent admitted to this). Not setting up an automatic transfer to pay a credit card balance in full each month (75 per cent admitted to this). ME general manager of cards and payments, Michael Hendricks, said credit cards are an important financial tool, but come with risks and costs if not managed well. “Credit cards can help people manage cash flow, earn rewards for everyday purchases, and make purchases online, all of which helps them get ahead,” he said. “It’s when people use them unwisely that problems can occur.” Top credit card misunderstandings t QFS DFOU EJE OPU LOPX which credit card to pay off first when faced with multiple cards at different rates. t QFS DFOU UIPVHIU BMM credit cards had an annual fee. t QFS DFOU EJE OPU SFBMJTF missing a credit card repayment may affect their ability to get a home loan. t QFS DFOU UIPVHIU IBWJOH a credit card means they’re always in debt. t QFS DFOU UIPVHIU DSFEJU card rates are set by the Reserve Bank of Australia. t QFS DFOU EJE OPU SFBMJTF credit scores apply in Australia.

with Helen van Riet AUSTRALIAN PLANTS SOCIETY (VIC) ◆ VIBRANT: Common Everlasting - Chyrsocephalum apiculatum - dwarf, spreading form.

Flowers for the hot and dry IT’S been an exceptionally dry winter. The long-term forecast is for a dry summer into autumn. Some Indigenous plants will provide a rewarding display of colour and freshness, even in such challenging times. Common everlasting daisies are a mainstay filler that cope extremely well with hot dry conditions. Attractive either as bedding plants or as understorey fillers, Chrysocephalum apiculatum and C. semipapposum are winners. They thrive in full sun to part shade. What’s in a name? “Chrysocephalum” is from Greek, chryso = golden and cephalus = headed. “Apiculatum” is from Latin meaning ‘ending abruptly in a short point’, referring to the leaves. “Semipapposum” is also from Latin.

Semi = half and pappos = downy or fluffy, referring to the individual flowers being white for two-thirds of their length. Four distinct sub-species occur in Victoria. Intermediate forms between C. semipapposum and C. apiculatum exist, and there are extreme forms of both species. These grey-leaved multi-headed daisies occur throughout Australia. They may be common, but they are also very beautiful. The combination of grey leaves and bright yellow flower heads is brilliant and they thrive in cultivation. C. apiculatum is a dwarf, spreading, bedding plant. It flowers profusely and almost continuously for most of the year.

It can be refreshed by cutting back spent flower heads and will burst back with renewed vigour with more clusters of golden blooms. C. semipapposum is a sprawling plant up to 40cm high and 60 cm wide. It is easy-care – needing only a heavy prune back to almost ground level at the end of the flowering season. From time to time, seedlings may pop up in the garden. They may turn out to be either short, tall or in between. You can take your chances on whether they will be short, tall or in between and just ‘wait and see’. Alternatively, to ensure that you get a particular form, take cuttings of firm young growth. They will strike easily and quickly.

Perfect Christmas gifts everywhere you look!

FEATURE STORY

Managing foal and young horse teeth MOST owners are very dedicated in the caring and up keep of the adult horse’s dental health, but the foal or young horse is often not thought about, maybe simply because they’re ‘young’ and considered in good health. A foal’s ďŹ rst (middle) deciduous (baby) incisors (front teeth) erupt at about 6-9 days of age, followed by the second incisors at 6-9 weeks and the third incisors at about 6-9 months. The shedding/loss of deciduous (baby) teeth is an entirely natural process that generally does not require any intervention or assistance in the process, but like any natural occurrence sometimes it doesn’t go to plan. Regular dental examinations (six monthly) on young horses is most important to ‘put them on track’ for a healthy mouth in the future. The young horse will lose 24 deciduous teeth from the age of about 2.5 years right up until about ďŹ ve years of age, they

with Amy Waldron BEHIND THE BIT EQUINE DENTISTRY will erupt 36-44 permanent/ adult teeth during this period (depending on age and sex). During the shedding process of the deciduous tooth, it is common to see what is known as ‘caps’ which is the remainder of the deciduous tooth on top of the permanent tooth as it emerges, this can cause maleruption (slow or incorrect eruption) and malalignment of the permanent tooth, occasionally fragments of the deciduous tooth remain in the gum causing discomfort (especially when eating) and may lead to infection if not removed. So the next beautiful baby that hits the ground or you welcome into your life remember to ‘put him/her on track’ for a happy and healthy mouth from a young age.

North East noir: Joanna Baker “They will be published next year. I think of the three books as The Beechworth Trilogy.â€? While she originally called the setting Allandale when first publishing Devastation Road, she reverted back to calling it Yackandandah in subsequent editions. “The setting is deďŹ nitely Yackandandah in most aspects and in spirit,â€? Joanna said. “A few buildings are in the wrong place and there are some pathways that don’t actually exist. “And of course the homes and small businesses have to be fictitious. “But I really wanted to give the setting its proper name.â€? Her work has continued with her most recently released novel, The Slipping Place, a murder mystery set in Hobart, was written as part of her PhD. “It is darker and more complex than my Beechworth trilogy,â€? Joanna said. “It is a murder mystery but deals in large ideas: what it takes to make a family; how we choose who we are responsible for and who to help; how some people make art to help them understand life; the beautiful, complex nature of Hobart.â€? She said she found herself drawn to writing murder mysteries, with some of her earliest memories being of devouring Agatha Christie novels. “I can still remember the day I read my first Agatha Christie, some time

around my early teens, Joanna recalled. “The book was A Murder is Announced, one of her really clever ones. “I can remember being out on the back lawn, with about four pages to go. “My parents were running around inside, trying to make me get ready to go out – a piano lesson or something – and I was sitting up against the garage, turning pages. “Basically, I was hiding, because there was no way I was going anywhere until I’d found out the solution to this mystery. And when I got to it, I was just blown away – by how I’d been led along and then tricked. “It was an intense experience. “So I try to write books like that. “I want them to be page-turners and intriguing puzzles, scattered with clues. “And at the end the clues are pulled together, into the story of a terrible murder. “Pretty classical stuff. Joanna described her work as very much in the domestic noir tradition, saying she has enjoyed the recent resurgence of this genre with titles such as Gone Girl, Big Little Lies and The Girl on the Train. “I write about ordinary people getting dragged into terrible events that happen within the circle of their own lives, she said. “The police are pushed into the background. “My books are about

â—† DEEP MYSTERY: One of Joanna’s novels, Devastation Road. families and close friends, people who think they know each other really well. But maybe they don’t. “I think of my books as mind games. “I’m fascinated by how we think about ourselves and other people and the world, what we say to each other, how we communicate, how we obfuscate ‌ and how we lie.â€? “I think the domestic scene is where a lot of our

deepest and darkest secrets lie. Joanna Baker will be appearing at the Mt Beauty Library on November 29 at 10.30am, followed by an appearance at 2.30pm the same day at Bright Library, and will speak at Myrtleford Library at 10.30am on November 30. Murray cod opening this Saturday

THIS Saturday see’s the long awaited Murray cod season opening. Many anglers have been waiting months to cast big lures and target Murray cod. The local waterways are in much better shape than they were for cod opening last year, which delivered a deluge of rain and sudden rise in dirty floodwater on cod opening day. As I type, early indicators are for mid 20 degrees weather with a few showers mid-week, which could put a bit of colour into the water, but nothing too substantial. There are Murray cod in pretty much all of the larger river systems around the region, all of which will be worth trying.

The Upper Murray, Cudgewa Creek, Mitta Mitta River downstream of Eskdale, Kiewa River downstream of Dederang,Ovens River from Myrtleford downstream, Buffalo River from Lake Buffalo downstream, King River from Cheshunt downstream, Broken River, Goulburn River, Campaspe River, Loddon River they ALL have great Murray cod fishing these days. Then there are the lakes. Lake Mulwala, Lake Hume has improved as a Murray cod fishery in recent years, Lake Buffalo, Lake Nillahcootie, Lake Eildon, Lake Eppalock. They all have very good numbers of Murray cod. Probably the lake that is emerging the best as a Murray cod fishery

is Lake Buffalo. In recent years it has really improved and has produced quite a few nice Murray cod. In all lakes and rivers, try using large hard body lures such as number 1 stumpjumper, or large spinnerbaits such as Bassman DT. During the light of day I like to fish deep, then at sunset I switch to surface lures for the most exciting freshwater fishing that we have here in North East Victoria, Murray cod surface fishing. Bait fishermen should try large yabbies, bardi grubs or cheese in any of the above mentioned waterways. Good luck to everyone heading out cod fishing on Saturday morning.

Food for thought when eating alone WHEN talking about food and nutrition, Naturopaths often hear their clients say “well I don’t bother cooking when it’s just meâ€?. This seems to happen when the kids leave home, a partner is away or when people ďŹ nd themselves alone after a divorce or loss of a partner. Often, they are the ones who have spent their entire life cooking beautiful loving meals for their children, partners and family and suddenly when left alone, appetite and the ‘bother to cook’ walks out the door too. The avours dry up and the pantry becomes empty.

The more sadness, grief, a sense of loss or companionship is part of the negative dietary change, the more we need to focus on eating foods high in aromatic herbs and spices, freshly prepared, rather than foods high in carbs and sugar. Chrismont Wines 2016 Chardonnay with Anita McPherson It deserves a decent sized glass so you can enjoy the golden colour and abundant aroma, and the description of stone fruit and butterscotch hit the nail on the head. The wine also has a pleasant weight and mouthfeel, with more peachy fruit and some savoury kind of spice, along with some honey and nutty nougat. A little crispness at the end is highlighted when it’s moderately chilled. Enjoy it over lunch at the cellar door with someone you love, or take it home and share with roast chicken or maybe gnocchi with burnt butter and sage. A little romance is good for the soul. Apple energy balls

This Day in History, 1872 THE isolation of Whorouly from adjoining countryside on the other side of the Ovens was coming to an end, as in November 1872 the ceremonial driving of the ďŹ rst pile of the new Whorouly bridge took place. Funding had been agreed between Beechworth and Oxley Shires, and Duncan Grant, the contractor, was ready to proceed. A good roll up of district people gathered to wish the project well.

THIS recipe by Leah Itsines for Aussie Apples makes an ideal snack, and more recipes like this can be found at www.aussieapples. com.au. These ingredients make 12-14 balls. Method: Place walnuts, apple, vanilla essence, water, almond meal, half of the coconut and dried apricots into a food processor. Blend this mixture for 2-3 min-

utes or until it has come together. Take a small about of this mixture into the palm of your hand and roll into a small ball. Repeat until all the mixture is gone. Roll each ball in the remaining desiccated coconut. Leave in the fridge for 30 minutes before eating. These can last up to a week in the fridge (if they last that long in your house!).

FOR the last few months our bull has been growing increasingly impatient, tired of keeping his own company in the paddock eating grass and becoming desperate to socialise. He’s been stamping his feet, rubbing his head against the gate to the point of bending it into a new shape and calling out in a way that’s a cross between a great whale and a wild brumby. So when the time came to spend time with his girlfriends once again, I swore I saw a twinkle in his eye, as he trotted through the gate kicking up dust in his wake. They say it’s not work if you love what you do, so this guy must be living the dream. We haven’t heard a peep out of him since, even while enjoying a glass of Chrismont Wines Chardonnay on the verandah in the late afternoon.

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au â—† THE WEIGHT OF THE WORLD: The International Prototypre Kilogram, formally the kilogram by which almost all other weights were measured, has been retired after 129 years of service.

Finding a better weigh - redefining the kilogram DID you know that just about every measurement you’ve ever made - from pouring ingredients for a recipe, to weighing yourself on scales, to working out the weight of your luggage for travel - can be traced back to a single object that weighs precisely one kilogram and which sits in a glass case just outside of Paris? This object, known as the ‘International Prototype Kilogram’ or IPK’, has, since its creation in 1889, been the standard of measurement - not only for we good and proper metric system users, but for the odd bunch who use the imperial standard of measurement across the pond. Copies of the IPK were made around the world, with

countries creating their own reference weights as close to the original as possible. These weights were then used to calibrate scales through each facet of our societies - from supermarkets and bakeries, to laboratories and factories. But two weeks ago, after serving faithfully for 129 years as the weight by which all other weights are measured, this humble lump of platinum and iridium has been stood down. ‘But why’, you ask? Well the simple answer is that - rather ironically - the kilogram, doesn’t actually weigh a kilogram anymore. Now - before you spiral into a chasm of paradoxical existentialism, perturbed by the

What’s your favourite festive sound? Christmas songs, festive social gatherings and the excited chatter of children. The pleasure of hearing and taking part in conversations are what many take for granted. Do you laugh and nod at what you hope are the right times, rather than really hear what others are saying and engaging in the conversation. It’s time to take action and be part of the conversation this festive season.

fear that your mass is in ux and you are no longer the constant object you thought you were in the grand scale of the universe - there’s actually a fairly basic explanation for this conundrum. Simply put, the IPK, just like any other object subjected to the weathers of time, has lost mass over the years, and is no longer the shiny kilogram it was in the bright days of its youth. Although the IPK is made of one of the most stable alloys known to science and treated with reverential care — and has sat, undisturbed, in the same location for almost its entire life, encased in a trio of vacuum-sealed bell jars — it has also been losing weight.

During ceremonial weighins that take place every few decades, when reference copies of the International Prototype Kilogram are own in from around the world and compared to their distinguished forebear, the IPK has been found to have lost around 50 micrograms in mass, roughly equal to a single eyelash. Of course, because the IPK is the deďŹ nition of the kilogram, it can’t technically lose or gain weight. Instead, it’s more accurate to say that the rest of the world has been getting slightly heavier. And so, to stave off hordes of angry pitchfork wielders, upset at the fact they’ve inexplicably been gaining weight

despite the radical new diets they’ve been subjecting themselves to, scientists have devised a new way to weigh. This new method of mass measurement is known as the Kibble balance. The Kibble balance works like a traditional set of scales or beam balance, just like those you might use to weigh groceries. But while these scales usually weigh one mass against another, the Kibble balance weighs mass against an electromagnetic force which can be measured extremely accurately. This electromagnetic force is generated using a coil of wire surrounded by permanent magnets.

Scientists can measure the mass on one side of the Kibble balance using Planck’s constant - a quantum of action, or the smallest possible physical action. This is what allows scientists to create a new deďŹ nition for the kilogram: measuring the fundamentals of the physical world down to what is essentially the smallest, immutable unit. The changeover from the IPK measurement to the Kibble balance measurement won’t occur until May next year, so if you are watching your weight at that time, you can look forward to suddenly becoming roughly 50 microgram lighter overnight. Who needs Jenny Craig, eh?

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS: The Office (US) (ABC Comedy, weeknights, late): Don’t let the fear of watching American adaptations of British comedies deter you from indulging in this program – it completely nails the subtle humour and barely gives you time to breathe between gags.

Show: RockWiz Salutes the Decades Channel: SBS Viceland Time: Weeknights, 7.30pm

Poh & Co (SBS Food Network, Thursdays, 9pm): Australian Masterchef champion Poh Ling Yeow shares her secrets in how to create delightful dishes and treats in this show that has a distinctly personal feel.

With Freyja Postlethwaite

ROCKWIZ has become a staple of Australian television since it first aired in 2005. Popular entertainment industry identities and pop culture buffs alike have graced our television screens to flex their knowledge of the world of music. Julia Zemiro and Brian Nankervis lead the fun-filled hour of witty banter and

rapid fire questions. Live music is also provided by a band to help form identification questions and break up the episode for easy viewing. RockWiz Salutes the Decades dedicates each episode to the iconic artists and tracks that made the music of the decade. Viewers can test their music knowledge from the living

Adam Hills: The Last Leg (ABC, Wednesdays, 9.31pm): Join Adam Hills, Josh Widdicombe and Alex Brooker as they talk (and joke) about current events. This is one of the great comedy-injected news programs.

◆ ROCKING THE QUIZ: Hosts Julia Zemiro and Brian

Nankervis. room while musicians and other figures answer questions and have a laugh together. This show has been a regular must-watch for me after it helped my brother and I settle the question of who

knows music best. It speaks volumes that I still enjoy watching despite the fact it has proved countless times I am not more knowledgeable on the topic. There is no bias to genres explored so fans of country

music, rock, jazz and pop can all take part in the fun. RockWiz continues to keep the magic of the quiz show alive, just like British classics Nevermind the Buzzcocks

and Would I Lie to You. It is also a perfect excuse to ditch other Australian made programs that don’t seem to have any real intrigue beyond shock factor.
