Home is where the school is
By BELINDA HARRISON
AAAHHH, the sweet sounds of children returning to school for another year - a delight (and often relief) for parents, and an unfortunate reality for the kids. From temper tantrums about the new early wake up time, to the eternal I can’t find my ... (insert relevant clothing item here), to the last minute rush to the bus stop or the realisation that an important piece of homework was left behind on the kitchen table, yes the end of January is a blessing and a time of hair-pulling all at once. But imagine you didn’t have to battle with (some) of those daily routines... Imagine if you could just roll out of bed, get yourself ready and by 8.30am, your children were sitting diligently at the kitchen table ready for their day of lessons. For Eldorado couple, Lachlan and Melanie Buchan, and five of their seven children - Hamish (15), Angus (13), Archie (11), Siena (nine) and George (seven) this is their reality and the kitchen table the permanent space for home school lessons. “In the beginning, a home schooling veteran advised me to school at the kitchen table. I listened to this advice for 10 years and it worked really well,” Melanie said. “Then Pinterest came along and I suddenly wanted a home school room with all the bells and whistles, so last year I transformed part of our living room into a home school room - but it didn’t last long - we were back at the kitchen table within weeks.” The couple’s youngest children - Hugo (four) and Tobias (20 months) are never far from their mother or siblings’ watchful eyes, able to play in the open-plan lounge/kitchen area or in the rooms off the main part of the house. On the days when extra curricular activities or appointments take up precious time during the day, schooling is moved to the evenings, overseen by Melanie as she multitasks preparing dinner, watching the youngest two of her brood and ensuring each child is up to date with their work.

YOUR GARDEN
All about Stag Beetles THERE are over 1200 species of these big-jawed beetles in the world and more than 85 different species in Australia, but many are facing a loss of habitat that is threatening their survival. Stag beetles love to live in damp woodland areas with lots of leaves and rotting wood on the ground but unfortunately, these are also the kinds of areas that humans like to clear for houses, farming or to use for logging. Male Stag Beetles are easy to recognise because they have a great big jaw, like a pincer. The females can be a little trickier to spot. Stag beetles’ jaws can be big and imposing but they’re not like human jaws that chew up and down, instead they move sideways. Their jaws are not used for chewing, in fact, most adult stag beetle species don’t eat much - just a very rare treat of nectar, sap or young tree shoots. Many types of stag beetle don’t eat anything at all once they hatch as adults. So what are their big jaws for? Male stag beetles use them to wrestle with other males, especially when a fe-
with Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife male is nearby or they have stepped into someone else’s territory. It’s how the beetle got its name; they use their jaws like a male red deer, or stag, uses its antlers to show off and fight. The stag beetle is a great friend to humans, playing an important role in ridding forests and our gardens of rotting leaves, fruits and wood. You will most likely find them making a home for their babies in rotten logs and trees or underneath layers of moist leaves on the ground. Be a ‘buddy’ to stag beetles by leaving it where you find it either in the wild or your backyard, plant local deciduous trees in your garden - stag beetles love the leaf litter created each autumn, especially by trees like Red Cedars and Illawarra Flame trees and leave rotting trees or branches on the ground, or place a few hollow rotting logs near a pond or water source in your yard.
PET CORNER
with Waterwise (North East Water) ◆ CONSERVATION: Understanding the microclimates in your garden, and the best plants for those areas, can help you reduce water consumption.
Microclimates around your home YOU will live in an area with a specific climate of rainfall temperature extremes. There are buildings, fences and large trees and shrubs and all these will influence the climate in your garden to make microclimates. The microclimate or environment of any garden depends on the rainfall, temperature range, radiation of light and heat, light and shade, humidity, wind, slope, position of nearby structures and ground cover and orientation. Areas under the eaves may be hot and dry or cool and dry. Garden beds near paving will be warmer than those near the lawn or out in the open. To make your garden water efficient, you should make use of the microclimates. Modify them if necessary and match the correct plants to the conditions. If you choose plants that suit all the different microclimates on your block they will grow much better and their water needs will be reduced. Because they are growing well and not under stress they will need much less attention and you will have more time to enjoy your garden.
WARNING - lame dad joke ahead: I used to have a joke about matching socks, but I lost one ... does this ‘Socks’ make up for it? WANGARATTA RSPCA has many lovable creatures waiting for the perfect family to take them home. Understanding some of the reasons for your microclimates and how they work can help make your planning a success and make your garden much more water efficient. James & Co. Wines 2019 Pinot Grigio
WE were not the only ones to welcome a day of decent rain after going weeks without a drop. It not only put a dampener on the risk of bushďŹ re, something many of us have been living with since the New Year, but freshened the air and made the garden come to life again. It was hard to believe the dams could ďŹ ll up, and lawn which crunched underfoot like crispy cornakes, could rise up and even show a hint of green after just one day. It’s a reminder that no matter what Mother Nature throws at us, things will eventually get better. Now able to smell again too it was a pleasure to take in the aroma of some fruity Pinot Grigio. The James & Co Pinot Grigio is made from Alpine Valley fruit and it has quite a oral aroma which hints at rose petal, but also melon fruit. There are some tropical fruit avours in what is a lightly straw coloured wine, and there is freshness from some citrus acidity, but it’s also quite smooth with a mellow mouthfeel. Enjoy lightly chilled and take some time to appreciate the nuances in aroma and avour.
with Anita McPherson
The makers suggest this food-friendly wine is perfect with antipasto on the terrazzo and I have to agree, especially now the banana lounge is back in use. It’s only early days I know, but Pinot Grigio and parties might just be back on the calendar.

This Day in History, 1902 DECLARED a township on this day in 1902. Great things were expected of this town. In the survey, provision was made for a main street two miles long. Gold discoveries fulfilled the optimism of the pioneers in a way they scarcely expected. The area had been named El Dorado many years before the first gold rush.
with Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) â—† HEALTHY TREATS: Freezing orange slices can be a healthy alternative to sugary ice creams.
After school snacks - summer fruits ONE of my favourite hot weather treats as a child was frozen oranges. At the start of each summer we would quarter dozens of oranges and pop them in the freezer. Surrounded by fruit orchards we would have access to the ripest and juiciest summer oranges and these became our icy poles. I still love them and as I have grown up I have been experimenting with many natural iced things.
These iced things don’t need artiďŹ cial avours as they are made from deliciously sweet summer fruits and fresh minty herbs. Icy treats make great after school/ sport snacks, fun deserts and are a great way to cool down. The kids can try: Frozen fruits: quartered oranges (peel on), fresh pineapple triangles (skin left on bottom of triangle)
Banana on a stick: peel a ripe banana and place on pop stick. Decorate by pressing choc dots into the banana esh before freezing Frozen smoothies: use your favourite smoothie recipe and pour into an icy pole tray and freeze Freshly squeeze some lime, lemon, orange or grapefruit juice and freeze in ice cube trays. Add these to water or soda water for a refreshing tang.

The idea of home schooling came after Mel met Lachlan’s sister early in their relationship. “She was home schooled and I found her education incredible,” Mel explained. “I met other home schooling families through Lachie’s family and noticed that the kids were mature and free of anxieties and peer pressure. “The lifestyle and freedom to learn at your own pace and level inspired me.” While Mel didn’t know how she and Lachie would go with doing it themselves, the couple spoke on it in detail and Lachie ‘came round to the idea’ well before the couple were engaged, the two determined to give it a good try when the time came to educate any children they had. While the exact number of children they wanted wasn’t something they discussed, they did know that they wanted a large family - Mel’s father came from a big family, and Lachlan himself is one of six children.
“Lachie loved growing up with all his siblings and I loved having a stack of cousins, so really it was an easy decision for us to make about our own family plans.” For the past 10 years, Melanie has worked diligently setting appropriate lessons which comply with the regulations set out for home school families by the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority. She uses lesson plans for the younger children through her American Catholic program and has also found plenty of websites and blogs by other home school parents to learn from and widen her own children’s experiences and education. “You’d be surprised how many people do choose to home school their children even locally,” Melanie said. “It’s actually more common than you think.” While Melanie is the main ‘teacher’, Lachlan is also involved, often taking on the maths lessons, while Lachlan’s mother
has been known to help out with grammar lessons. Extra curricular activities are also plentiful and include bagpipe, swimming, piano, cycling, horse riding, dancing and flying lessons. Hamish and Angus are also involved in the air force and army cadets. The children don’t miss out on excursions either, travelling to Sovereign Hill and visiting Ned Kelly’s real armour, there are also trips to museums, out into the bush for bushwalks or up to the snow. “We don’t go it alone, we know quite a lot of other home school families and we get together whenever we can at mass or during sport. “Sometimes we attend home school days where we can swap ideas or give encouragement. “I really love home schooling; my kids and I couldn’t imagine a different life.” For those wanting more information on home schooling, visit the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority website at vrqa.vic.gov.au.

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ YABBY TIME: Yummo! A delicacy of freshwater yabbies caught last week. Now is a great time to target yabbies, before the water starts to cool down.
Strike while the water is warm
AFTER a horrific heatwave in late December and early January, we have been blessed with mild weather over the last week. I took advantage of this glorious weather last Thursday and went to Lake William Hovell with my kayak. I trolled four redfin on a small Dimiki diving minnow, and caught three others casting a Strike Tiger nymph soft plastic. None of the fish were big enough to keep, but I had a truly delightful afternoon. I endured an afternoon downpour, followed by dead calm conditions with mist rising off the water, and the entire lake all to myself. It was a truly ethereal experience. At the time of writing the road to Lake Buffalo is still closed due to recent bushfires, but once it reopens I anticipate that it will be well worth fishing for redfin. Murray cod reports have trickled in at a steady pace all week with many people catching a few fish right across the region. Bait seems to be the most consistent producer of fish for many anglers with lure fisherman picking up the odd fish.
with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA My wife Lauretta and I fished near Peechelba with cheese on Friday evening. We only managed two small cod (Lauretta caught them both). Lauretta had to dive to save her fishing rod from being pulled into the river by something big that took her bait, possibly a nuclear submarine! Something that I absolutely love about summer time is yabbying. I absolutely love catching yabbies, almost as much as I love eating them. I have been catching a few over the last couple of weeks. This is the best time of the year to catch yabbies. Once the water starts to cool down the yabbies stop biting quite quickly, so if you want a feed of yabbies, now is the time to head out chasing them.
◆ MANY UNKNOWNS: While medical researchers are working hard to determine the origin and means of transmission of the new coronavirus, there is a lot of work ahead to provide concrete conclusions.
All about the new coronavirus A NEWLY identified coronavirus, dubbed 2019-nCoV, has been spreading in China, and has now reached several other countries, including five confirmed cases in Australia (in Melbourne and Sydney). As the number of confirmed cases and deaths continue to rise, health officials are working on all fronts to learn more about the virus and put measures into place to curtail its spread. At last count, the number of confirmed cases of the virus had risen above 2700, with a death toll of at least 80 people putting it’s mortality rate at around three per cent. What is a coronavirus? Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can cause respiratory illnesses such as the common cold. Most people get infected with coronaviruses at one point in their lives, but symptoms are typically mild to moderate. In some cases, the viruses can cause lower-respiratory tract illnesses such as pneumonia and bronchitis. These viruses are common amongst animals worldwide, but only a handful of them are known to affect humans. Rarely, coronaviruses can evolve and spread from animals to humans. This is what happened with the coronaviruses known as the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-Cov) and the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-Cov). How far has the virus spread? The first cases of the pneumonia-like virus were reported in Wuhan, China, on December 31, 2019. Since then, the virus has spread to various other countries, including Thailand, Japan, Korea, the United States, Australia, France, and Taiwan, among others. The first Australian case was confirmed on Saturday, January 25 in a man from the affected Wuhan province of China who had flown from Guangzhou to Melbourne. Where did the virus come from? Considering that the virus first occurred in Wuhan in people who had frequented a local seafood and animal market, officials had stated it was likely that the virus from animals to humans. And a new study, sequencing the genes of the coronavirus,
and published in the Journal of Medical Virology seems to have provided evidence that this is the case, with the originator of the virus likely being snakes. That said, it has not been confirmed that the virus was directly transmitted from a snake to a human, and researchers caution that there is still many unknowns concerning the virus and its ability to spread. How did the virus hop from animals to humans? Some viruses carried by animals are known to be able to transmit to humans, and this coronavirus is one such example. The study also found that a change to one of the viral proteins in 2019-nCoV allows the virus to recognize and bind to receptors on certain host cells. This ability is a crucial step to entering cells, and the researchers said that the change in this particular protein may have helped the virus hop to humans. Can the virus spread between people? The virus is capable of spreading between people in limited cases, however the CDC has stated that the primary means of transmission is from animal to human. Still, people are advised to take precautions as the virus can be spread via the air (from a cough or sneeze), as well as personal contact, or contact with a surface or object that has viral particles on it. What are the symptoms of the new coronavirus and how do you treat it? Symptoms of the new coronavirus include fever, cough and difficulty breathing. Despite sharing some symptoms that were similar to SARS, there are some differences, such as the absence of upper respiratory tract symptoms like a runny nose, sneezing or sore throat, and intestinal symptoms like diarrhea - which affected 20 to 25 per cent of SARS patients. There are no specific treatments for coronavirus infections and most people will recover on their own, according to the CDC. At this stage, there is no vaccine for the new coronavirus but researchers at the US National Institute of Health confirmed they are in the preliminary stages of developing one.
