Forging Netherlands connections

◆ LENDING A HAND: Janny Staphorst-Bollard, originally from the Netherlands, has lived in Australia for 20 years and spends much of her time assisting fellow immigrants, including fellow Dutch people. PHOTO: Wendy Stephens

By KYLIE WILSON

IMMIGRATING to Australia from the Netherlands 19 years ago, Beechworth’s Janny Staphorst-Bollard has worked hard to make her mark on the local community. Janny said her first exposure to the country came from visiting relatives in the Cooma area in the late 1990s - where she met the man who would later become her husband, John Bollard, on a hike. Their relationship blossomed from there, and Janny moved to Australia in 2000, initially making her home with John near Cooma before the pair moved to Beechworth in 2013. Since then, Janny has become heavily involved with the North East Multicultural Association (NEMA), working on a number of different projects. These have included engaging with migrants who arrived as long ago as the 1950s and 1960s, to help them better access the services they need; liaising with the Albury-Wodonga Ethnic Communities Council (AWECC), forging stronger relationships with mental health bodies to benefit people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and more. Another project was known as the Ovens and Murray Multicultural Regional Area Partnership (OMMRAP), whose priority areas include women’s leadership, domestic violence, youth engagement, community capacity building and leadership development, health, education, employment, and volunteering. She is also involved in a regular morning tea meeting of Dutch immigrants, known as Dutch Connections, in Beechworth every second Tuesday, and she said she loved the chance to connect with some of her fellow countrymen. “It’s good to keep the traditions going,” she said of marking special occasions with fellow Dutch people.

Pandorea jasminoides

Inguinal hernia A HERNIA is defined as a defect in a muscle layer that allows the contents that should be contained within a cavity to move outside of it. Hernias can be acquired, such as a car accident tearing a hole in the abdominal muscle, or congenital, which means an abnormality that an animal is born with. An inguinal hernia occurs in the groin as a soft mass that may come and go. It may in females look like a swelling of the rear most mammary gland as abdominal contents occupy the space below the gland after slipping out through the hernia. There is a natural opening in the groin between several of the abdominal muscles that allows some blood vessels to exit and enter the abdominal cavity. In the male dog this opening, called the inguinal ring, also allows the blood vessels and spermatic cord to pass to the testes. In some dogs or cats the inguinal ring may be increased in size from birth (this is often an inherited characteristic) or it may be enlarged by a traumatic event or during pregnancy. When the ring is enlarged it is possible for the lining of the abdominal cavity to protrude out the ring and sit under the skin. In more severe cases abdominal

with Tim Craig BVSc VETERINARIAN contents like the uterus, abdominal fat, the bladder or intestines may also pass out the ring and sit as herniated contents under the skin. In the worst case these contents then become twisted or swollen and the blood supply is lost. In such cases severe pain and swelling in the groin is observed and the condition is often life threatening. In more simple cases a hernia may be seen as a soft swelling in the groin on one or both sides that may come and go. This reflects some abdominal cavity lining material and some fat that slips in and out of the inguinal ring that is slightly too big. If the hernia is large, involves abdominal contents or is painful then surgery is the treatment of choice to return the contents to the abdomen and stitch the hole back to a normal size. Where the herniated contents have been damaged, removal of a length of damaged intestine or removal of the uterus may also be part of the treatment plan.

VET CORNER THIS week’s pet of the week at Wangaratta RSPCA is Hannah, a female, nine month old domestic shorthair cat who is black tortoiseshell and white in colour. To see more animals up for adoption at the Wangaratta RSPCA, visit the shelter in Connell Street or phone (03) 5722 2874.

IF you need to camouflage a fence, hide the rubbish bins, lend elegance and softness to a utilitarian carport or shade a northfacing verandah from the hot summer sun, the climber Pandorea jasminoides may be just the ticket. This glossy-leaved, dense vine is long-lived and easily managed. It also looks great as the subject of a hanging basket. The name is derived from Pandora, the first mortal woman of Greek mythology, and jasminoides = similar to the genus jasminium. P. jasminoides is one of six Pandorea species native to Australia. It occurs naturally in higher rainfall areas along the east coast and hinterlands of Queensland and New South Wales. It was recognised early after European settlement as a desirable, easyto-grow garden plant, and has remained popular since that time. The profuse and conspicuous bell-like blooms are in terminal sprays to approx. 12 cm long. Flowering occurs throughout the warmer months. There are various varieties. The most common is “Bower of Beauty”, which bears soft pink to dark pink flowers with a reddish hairy throat. “Lady Di” was introduced into cultivation in the 1970s. It has pure white blooms with a cream throat. “Charisma” has variegated cream and green foliage with flowers similar to “Bower of Beauty”. Other varieties include “Lemon Bells”, “Deep Pink” and “Southern Belle”. In its natural habitat P. jasminoides thrives in semi-shaded locations, and can scramble upwards to the light to reach the top of the forest canopy. In the garden it grows well in full sun or part shade. It copes well with ex-

tended dry periods and prefers a relatively well-drained soil. Like many climbers, it can be managed with regular, hard pruning. Flowering occurs over a long period between spring and late summer. The flowers are followed by con-

spicuous boat-shaped fruits which split to reveal flat, winged seeds. P. jasminoides can be grown successfully from fresh seed. It also strikes readily from stem cuttings, which do no need to have a basal node.

WINE TALK

YOUR HEALTH

Dal Zotto Wines NV Prosecco MOST good restaurants you visit these days offer you a choice of still or sparkling water for the table as soon as you are seated. Next you might be offered a pre-dinner drink and while once upon a time it was a glass of French champagne or Australian sparkling, it seems everyone has gone crazy for Prosecco. Whether it’s by the glass, a bottle for the table or in the form of a cocktail, Prosecco is the aperitif of choice and it’s no wonder, because it’s a great way to get your night off to a good start. Michael and Christian Dal Zotto from the King Valley would like us all to make Prosecco our first drink and they don’t have to ask twice. As soon as you crack the seal you’re in for a good time. Pour the sparkling wine and enjoy its manic energy as the pure white bubbles surge to the surface.

with Anita McPherson There’s fruity freshness with some apple and citrus sherbet present in both the aroma and flavour, which leans toward the sweeter end of the spectrum, but not entirely. A bit of crispness adds to its suitability as pre-dinner palate cleanser, but it’s also great with a range of cocktail-style food and particularly with hot and salty appetisers. King Valley has become synonymous with Australian Prosecco and we can thank the local producers for making that happen. It’s not going to be a stretch to show them our support. Available from local stockists or the cellar door in Whitfield, or go to www.dalzotto.com.au.

with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson and Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) ◆ KEEP WARM: You should always be prepared for the changeable weather at this time of year, but don’t forget to keep warm.

This Day in History, 1838 CHARLES Sturt, one of the early Australian explorers, stood at the junction of the Ovens and Murray rivers in 1838. Sturt, by 1838, had already named the Murray. Now he sought to prove the river he had named the Murray further downstream was, in fact, the same river that the Hume and Hovell expedition had named the Hume.

AUTUMN is my favourite time of the year in the North East. Cool nights, warm days and beautiful autumn colours. But with this comes the sudden changes in weather, cool one day, windy the next and then back to warm and summery. It’s like Melbourne has moved to Wangaratta. In autumn, we see lots of people feeling fatigued and lethargic and either like they have hay fever, a plague of viral symptoms enters their homes and workplaces. Autumn, with its changeable temperatures, is infection central. What often feels like hay fever at this time of year is often a virus. Now is the time to ramp up and strengthen your immune support. To reduce infections we tend to look at the role of nutrition, stress, food intolerances, allergies, rest

namon, garlic, horseradish, thyme, rosemary and ginger. 5. Reduce stress and recuperate: Have you ever noticed that you come down with a cold after a period of increased stress? While we are in the thick of it, our natural cortisol levels are slightly protective against infections such as colds but when these levels drop a little we become more likely to succumb to infection. To prevent wrecking your next holiday by spending it nursing a cold, stress management is needed now. 6. Reduce alcohol and sugar, do some regular stress busting exercise (as simple as a daily walk), take a bath or do some yoga/ meditation. Naturopaths are brilliant at both supporting the immune system preventatively, but also helping you acutely to fight off a virus and leave you feeling stronger and fully recuperated afterwards.

and immune system function. Try these strategies to maintain good health at this time of year: 1. Drink a tonne of water despite the cooler weather. Try naturally decaffeinated herbal teas to keep you warm and hydrated. 2. Pack clothes for all seasons and don’t get caught getting cold –the neck and kidneys especially need to be kept warm. 3. Get yourself a naturopathic first aid kit: Consult with your naturopath to see what remedies you can have on hand for you and your family. Each family’s kit will be different depending on if you suffer from upper respiratory, croup, bronchitis or digestive upsets. 4. Up your warm foods: steamed veg over salad, broths over juices, slow cooked meats like casseroles and roasts. Add more warming herbs to your diet; chilli, turmeric, cin-

“It’s a sort of bonding thing. “Our personal networks can be very small, and the idea with coffee or lunch is to build a bigger network.” She has worked in many areas across the North East with NEMA, including Mansfield, Benalla, the Rural City of Wangaratta, Indigo Shire, and Alpine Shire, and loved working for the organisation. “We are a link between everyone,” Janny said. “NEMA is very special, very unique.” Janny said that The Netherlands and Australia had much in common, including a rich cycling culture - although cycling in The Netherlands sees cyclists covering flatter terrain, and cycling in Austral-

ia is more challenging. She added that she also relished Australia’s wide open spaces. “I love the space here,” she said, adding that she and John often took the chance to travel and explore local diverse landscapes.

“There’s so many lovely places to go away.” Janny said the Dutch people had made a big impact on Australian society over many centuries, beginning with explorer and sailor Dirk Hartog making landfall in Western Australia

in 1616, predating Captain Cook’s arrival by a wide margin. Western Australia itself features many place names inspired by The Netherlands, including the famous Rottnest Island. Hundreds of thousands of Australians have Dutch heritage, with Dutch immigration having reached some of its highest levels in the years following World War II. Over the years, many people of Dutch heritage have made their mark in a number of industries, such as the arts, logistics, horticulture, water management and more. More information on the work that NEMA does can be found online at www. nema.org.au.

International experience beneficial to careers WORKING abroad can provide professionals with valuable experience and boost their career potential, says recruiting experts Hays. Over recent years the professional jobs market has become increasingly more global, providing workers with more opportunities to work and live abroad. While industries such as oil and gas have seen professionals working outside countries of their birth for some time, other industries such as life sciences, ďŹ nancial services and technology are now following suit. Nick Deligiannis, Managing Director of Hays in Australia and New Zealand says, “economic potential in emerging markets and skills shortages has led to companies needing to move employees to the countries where their skills are required. “This has led to global opportunities for professionals across the world, allowing them to grow their careers by moving abroad and gaining experience that otherwise wouldn’t have been available to them.â€? Hays CEO, Alistair Cox, adds; “today, international mobility is on the rise and employers value adaptable, inquisitive candidates. “Taking a leap of faith to work overseas – or work in a totally unfamiliar environment – will increase your cultural intelligence and your exibility and it shows a new employer

you are willing to push yourself as opposed to staying permanently in your comfort zone.â€? Why should professionals consider an international move? Nick advises, “There are a number of reasons why an international move could be beneďŹ cial to professionals and why it should be seriously considered by those that are looking to further their career and employability while hoping to expand their life experiences.â€? Nick says these reasons include: t #FUUFS DBSFFS PQQPSUVOJUJFT BOE QSPTQFDUT “Depending on a person’s skillset, there could be a greater range of opportunities available to professionals in overseas markets. TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre ◆ ROBBIE’S BEST: My largest trout this season. I caught it in a tributary of the Kiewa River on Saturday afternoon on a Pontoon21 Pacer jointed minnow. I did not measure the fish but estimate it to be around 50cm long.

Fish running hot and cold I AM not a handyman at all but as soon as I realised that I had a free day on Saturday… I made a bolt for the mountain streams to go trout fishing. The trout fishing has become quite erratic over the last couple of weeks as the trout are just about to start spawning. The trout fishing is typically very hot and cold at this time of the year. I myself have not seen evidence of trout spawning yet, but have had reports of trout paired up over spawning beds known as Redds in some areas. I have had a report of good trout fishing in the Snowy Creek upstream of Mitta Mitta as well as the Mitta Mitta River itself. I have also had a poor report of trout fishing in the Ovens River upstream of Bright, hence the mention of “hot and cold” trout fishing. I fished a stream in the Kiewa Valley on Saturday afternoon and I had several strikes that failed to hook up, but I did land one lovely brown trout, my biggest all season. The trout were there, but were not fully in the mood to commit to striking my lures. I have had several reports from

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA Lake Buffalo this week. All were of no fish except one report of several nice sized redfin caught off the bank on bait, but I’m not sure what bait though. This is typical redfin fishing in the autumn - all or nothing. The key is to move around a lot and try and locate the schools of fish. Lake Mulwala has been producing some quality Murray cod, so too has the Murray River downstream of the lake. When I say quality, there’s been quite a few Murray cod over 100cm caught. To see some great footage of one of these beasts caught last week, search YouTube for “Murray Crabb Fishing” and have a look at his recent video called “Meter Plus Murray Cod”.

NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS: While Charles Darwin is correctly attributed as discovering evolution, it is also true that his ideas didn’t exist in a vacuum. Many people throughout history, including some contempories of Darwin’s time such as naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace, helped pave the road for the theory as we understand it today.

Evolution of the theory of evolution WHENEVER we think about the theory of evolution as we know and study it today, we almost always give credit to 19th Century naturalist Charles Darwin as the arbiter of the theory. However, just as with any scientific theory and discipline, the origins of the ideas we use today to understand and study our world have a long and storied history dating back centuries if not millenia, and evolution is no exception. This week, we’ll be taking a look at some of the figures throughout history who helped bring to light this great unifying theory of biology, speciation and nature. Evolutionary concepts first appeared in early Greek writings, most notably in the work of Anaximander and Empedocles. Anaximander proposed that animals could be transformed from one kind to another, and Empedocles speculated that they could be made up of various combinations of preexisting parts. However, evolutionary theories were subsequently prevented from developing and challenging the belief of special creation for some 15 centuries, due in large part to the influence

of religion on accepted inquiries of science in society. The growth of scientific observation and experimentation led to fledgling theories beginning to emerge from the mid 16th Century. Despite the idea of human progress being central to the Enlightenment of the 18th Century, this did not lead to the theory of evolution. Pierre-Louis Moreau de Maupertuis proposed the spontaneous generation and extinction of organisms as part of his theory of origins but did not advance a theory of evolution. On the other hand, Georges-Louis Leclerc, a prominent naturalist of the time, explicitly considered, and rejected, the possible descent of several species from a common ancestor. The physician Erasmus Darwin, grandfather of Charles Darwin, offered some evolutionary speculations in his book Zoonomia, but they had no real influence on subsequent theories. The Swedish botanist, Carolus Linnaeus, who devised the hierarchical system of plant and animal classification that is still in use today in a modernised form, showed an inclination towards the ability of species to mutate, as a result of his observations of

variations among species. In the early 19th Century, the French naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck presented a clearly stated evolutionary theory. This theory, later known as ‘The Inheritance of Acquired Characteristics’ was ridiculed at the time and thoroughly disproved in the 20th Century, although it did contribute to the gradual acceptance of biological evolution as well as stimulating later studies. The founder of the modern theory of evolution was Charles Darwin. In 1859 the first edition of his On The Origin of The Species was published and it sold out in one day. The naturalist Alfred Wallace had also hit upon the idea of natural selection independently, however, his view differed from Darwin’s, most notably in that he did not think that natural selection was sufficient to account for the origin of man, but divine intervention had been required. Herbert Spencer, a philosopher, was also an influence in evolutionary theory during the latter part of the 19th and early 20th Centuries. He popularised a number of slogans, including “survival of the fittest” which was taken up by Darwin in later editions of Origin of Species.

THE June Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend is the launch of the Salami Season in the King Valley and to celebrate one of their favourite times of year, Dal Zotto Wines presents their very own salami making classes, with their friend James Mele from The Meat Room. “Nothing brings Italians together more than family and the community discussing food and sharing recipes that have been handed down over many generations,” said Michael Dal Zotto. “Skills in the kitchen are as respected as skills in the vineyard and the winery…you can’t have one without the other.” And not surprisingly, salami is a classic match for Dal Zotto’s traditional Italian wine varieties. tŚĞƚŚĞƌ ŝƚ ďĞ ǁŝƚŚ ƚŚĞŝƌ ĨĂŵŽƵƐ Ăů ŽƩ Ž WƌŽƐĞĐĐŽ ;ƚŚĞ Į ƌƐƚ ŝŶ ƵƐƚƌĂůŝĂͿ Ăůů ƚŚĞ ǁĂLJ through their range of white wines, rosato, to their Sangiovese, Barbera and the king of them all, Nebbiolo…there is always the perfect wine for the perfect salami. Dal Zotto’s salami classes form a key part of the King Valley ‘Fit For A King’ Food and Wine Festival, June 8-9, with a weekend of fun and delicious activities across the entire region. ^ĂůĂŵŝ ůĂƐƐ ʹ ^ƵŶĚĂLJ͕ :ƵŶĞ ϵ Ăƚ Ăů ŽƩ Ž Wines Ͳ dǁŽ ŚŽƵƌ ŝŶƚĞƌĂĐƟ ǀĞ ƐĂůĂŵŝ ŵĂƐƚĞƌĐůĂƐƐ with James Mele from The Meat Room, one ŽĨ ƵƐƚƌĂůŝĂ͛Ɛ Į ŶĞƐƚ ĂƌƟ ƐĂŶ ďƵƚĐŚĞƌƐ͘ - Includes a glass of Prosecco on arrival and pizza to share.
