Running the world By BELINDA HARRISON

WITH a full-time job running a 100-head beef cattle stud with husband, Brian, in Lurg, it’s a testament to Karen Morham’s love of coaching that she volunteers her time and travels to Wangaratta twice a week to train future athletic superstars. Karen’s working life started with the National Australia Bank (NAB) in Melbourne - where she was born and raised. After meeting and marrying Brian, they set up their home in Wallan and added four children over the next 10 years. But Karen’s dream was always to work in the fitness industry. “Sport has always been a part of my life,” she said. “When I left school and tried to become a physical education teacher, the university board said they didn’t see me staying in the sports industry. “I guess I had something to prove and never gave up on my dream. “While I was working at the NAB, I studied fitness at night school to become a qualified fitness instructor and gained experience by working with Craigieburn Leisure Centre and as a sports trainer with Wallan Football Club. “After our children were born, Brian and I decided it was time for a lifestyle change. “We wanted to raise the kids in a country community and perhaps own a farm one day, so when the opportunity came up for Brian to work as a diesel mechanic in Finley, NSW, we moved north.”

Karen and Brian purchased a 50 acre farm and Morham Maine’s - a Maine Anjou Beef stud - was born. Karen assisted the primary school with sport, opened her own gym, worked as a sports trainer for Finley Football Club and was involved in Finley Little Athletics Club. “Our son, Aaron, was developing into an excellent distance runner and after representing Finley High at state cross country, he was given the opportunity to go to America with Sports Travel Australia to compete in Nevada. “We were so excited and I went to support him, which is where my career as a distance athletics coach started.” Karen was invited to assist the cross country coaches on a tour to America and became a permanent member of the team, coaching the track and field group on the Track and Field Tour to Canada. Karen was also appointed as an athletics coach for the Berrigan Shire International Children’s Games in Taipei. In 2014, the cows were outgrowing the farm so Karen and Brian sold up their NSW life and bought a 240 acre farm in Lurg, Victoria. “Lurg is beautiful and I can commute to either Wangaratta or Benalla within 30 minutes,” Karen said. “I love that Wangaratta is big enough to have everything I need, but small enough that I don’t feel the hustle or bustle - I love the town and the country vibe.”

How much is that doggy in the window? WITH everyone being isolated at home and not able to see their family, many people have decided now is the time to adopt or buy a family dog. No doubt the thought of a four legged friend has entered many people’s mind especially in the past few months. Making the commitment to a new pet is a decision that requires lengthy thought and research. It is important to make sure you are ready for the responsibility of looking after a new dog or cat as well as ďŹ nding the right one for you. There are many places you can ďŹ nd a new dog or puppy. Once you have decided that you are ready for a pet it is important to choose a breed of dog that will not only bring you a lot of joy but will suit your lifestyle and commitments. There are a number of resources available to help guide you such as your local veterinary clinic, breed books, the internet, breeders and breed kennel clubs. A puppy can make a great addition to a family, teaching children about the responsibility that comes with caring for a pet as well was giving hours of entertainment. Along with training, feeding and playing with the puppy throughout its life your new pet will require routine trips to the veterinarian and these responsibilities should also be considered in your decision. Please put time into researching prospective breeds that you think will suit your lifestyle. Feel free to give us a ring if you have any questions.

â—† JOYOUS: When the garden is looking barren in the winter, jonquils can brighten up your space - whether big or small. PHOTO: Belinda Harrison

Joyful jonquils brighten your garden WHILE the rest of my springowering bulbs are popping up out of the stony earth and preparing themselves for a burst of colour once the weather warms up, my jonquils are proudly displaying their trumpet-like owers and infusing the backyard with their distinctive scent. Jonquils - or Narcissus hybrids - give the garden some life when the roses have been cut back to bare branches and the leaves of the nearby weeping elm, ďŹ g and Japanese maple trees have fallen off. A close relative of the daffodil - which I’ve also seen sprouting gorgeously in local gardens - jonquils come in a range of yellows, creams and whites and they’re quite easy to grow in garden beds, pots or rockeries. At their height of their owering in winter I love to cut a bunch to bring inside, although our cat does

Indigo Vineyard Pinot Grigio 2018 THERE is a lot to be said for just doing the right thing. When you’re young, it’s all about pushing boundaries, challenging authority and breaking the rules, and all it seems so exciting, but it inevitably doesn’t achieve much except to get you into trouble. At the moment we’re being asked to abide by some restrictions and while personally we might not like it, it’s for a greater good, which is the health and safety of all. If we all just chose to do the right thing, there’d be no need to fear getting ďŹ ned, getting sick or getting caught, and before we knew it we’d be out and about again living life to the full. Stay home, ensure the cellar is full, kick back and solve all the problems of the world over a bottle of Indigo Vineyard’s Pinot Grigio from Beechworth. This golden white wine has fruity but also quite oral aromas which are reminiscent of honeysuckle and ripe melon fruit. When it comes to the avour it leans more to the citrus end of the spectrum; maybe lemon and pear and a hint of almond. I like it quite well chilled which doesn’t dull the aroma but intensiďŹ es the almost grapefruit zing of what is a refreshing drop.

with Naturopath Belinda McPherson (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) â—† CLEARLY RADIANT: Sitting in front of heaters, cold winds and diet can all play a part in how your skin looks during winter.

Enjoy with a wide range of foods, including the home-delivered. In the words of one of the world’s great sports philosophers - just do it. PRICE: About $25 a bottle. Available from local outlets or visit www.indigovineyards.com. au.

On This Day in History, 1905 ON this day in 1905, a Saturday, Greta had a fall of snow which stayed on the ground until the Sunday. The hills around the settlement were white. It was, old residents said, the third fall of snow in 25 years.

Beautiful winter skin OUR skin is our largest organ and needs a constant supply of lymphatic uid and blood ow to nourish it. Its health is inuenced by hormones, immunity, toxicity and emotions. Our skin is a protective layer that aids our body in uid regulation, detoxiďŹ cation and vitamin D synthesis, as well as protecting us against infections. Time spent under heaters and cold winter winds dehydrates and strips these protective layers of the skin. You might not think of food when you look in the mirror and see acne, cold sores, eczema, psoriasis or dandruff, but what you put in your mouth has a big effect on this massive organ. Naturopaths’ top ďŹ ve tips for healthy skin: 1. Healthy oils: eliminate deep fried,

carbohydrate laden foods. Consume foods such as avocado, nuts and seeds, salmon and other oily ďŹ sh, oils such as walnut, olive etc. to hydrate you skin and regulate sebum or oil production. 2. Water: removes toxins from your body and lymph system to encourage radiant glowing skin. Dry skin indicates that you are dry on the inside too. 3. Movement: you don’t have to be a gym junkie... simply get out and walk. Improved blood ow increases oxygenation of the blood and aids in removing toxins and brings fresh blood to the surface to be used by your skin. Follow sweaty exercise with a shower to wash off topical grit and grime. 4. ReďŹ ned sugar: causes inammation of the skin. This is found in reďŹ ned carbohydrate foods such as

pastries, breads, biscuits, pasta, etc. 5. Routine: ďŹ nd a skin care routine that works for you. Avoid drying products such as chemicals and witch hazel. Ask our day spa staff for help with identifying products that may help you. Skin issues can be a big worry for some of our clients, as everyone can see that something is “not rightâ€? with you. It’s embarrassing and can affect moods, self-esteem and how we face the world on a daily basis. Diet, lifestyle and the right natural medicines work wonders in skin conditions. Seek help and professional advice by a trained naturopath to allow you to put your best face forward.

But without the gym and the community friendships she’d made in Finley, Karen found herself at a loss and decided to find something to compliment her international coaching work and keep her skills fresh and relevant. “One of my athletes who’d attended the cross country tour to America was from Wangaratta and when he contacted me for additional training, I jumped at the chance … and my squad grew from there.” With the team expanding and full of talented young runners, a name and identity was chosen by the members North East Raptors. “We wanted something fast, smoothly efficient, and tough,”

FEATURE STORY Karen explained. “A raptor can be one of three things: a dinosaur, snake or bird and the North East just flowed and sounded perfect with raptors.” The opportunities for Karen’s athletes to compete on a world stage are made possible by her continued involvement with Sports Travel Australia’s Track and Field Tour to Canada and the Cross Country Tour to America each year. “The Australian athletes compete against Canadian

athletes and the America cross country tour includes international friendlies,” she said. When Karen isn’t travelling with her runners, she and Brian are working hard on the farm feeding their cows and carrying out general cattle husbandry. “I’m proud to say that I acquired a particular skill on that front - I’m accredited to artificially inseminate cows,” Karen laughed. “Maine Anjou is a French breed of cattle, they were once a dual-purpose breed but now we use them primarily for beef … they do still retain great milking ability though. “We’ve been importing Maine Anjou genetics from Canada and America and

have begun to export our own brand - which is the process of breeding the animal to a style, thickness, colour, height, temperament, udder etc to our liking. “Genetics is very tricky at the best of times but our ultimate aim is to produce an animal that is marketable to a commercial breeder with the aim for them to produce great progeny.” Karen’s passion for her cattle is on par with her passion for her squad with both ‘herds’ growing in number - and Karen has big plans for them both. “I coach adults as well as juniors and I see a huge potential in a Master Athletics Squad which I’d love to help
