Mountain memories

FOR Karen Smythe and the team behind Falls Creek Museum, the building not only houses vital parts of the mountain’s history, it is a tribute to the hard work and community spirit of former community volunteer, Lyn Gibbs, who passed away last year. Karen said she joined the Falls Creek Historical Society soon after
moving to the area four years ago, and was passionate about helping to reopen the then-closed museum. “Upon contacting Diana Patterson, one of the founding members of the HS and a former resort management board member, I found out that the museum had been closed and all of the artefacts and memorabilia had been boxed up,” Karen said. “It was a sad time for the group of volunteers that set up the first museum.”

Trout anglers…it’s time to get excited WHILE many parts of the country are suffering from debilitating drought, North East Victorian rivers and streams are running strong and in almost pristine condition ahead of this weekend’s official trout season opening. While a rainfall deficiency has effected many low lying areas with farm dams and rainwater tanks struggling with low water levels, in the hills it has been business as usual with plenty of winter rain and snow. A quick drive around the region last week to look at the trout streams was quite a delight with all streams carrying a healthy amount of water for this time of the year. None were in flood, but none were excessively low either. In fact, they looked perfect for the new trout season which opens this Saturday. As I type this report there is the possibility of considerable

It is not likely to be flooding rain though, so this could be a wonderful thing that might really get the trout feeding. All areas that contain trout will be worth fishing. If you fished somewhere successfully before the season closed, then that spot will be worth fishing once the season opens. Likely spots to try will be

the Ovens River upstream of Bright, anywhere along the Buckland River, the Buffalo River upstream of Abbeyard, the Dandongalale River, the King River upstream of Lake William Hovell and a little further afield the Mitta Mitta and Kiewa Rivers will be well worth fishing. As the catchments have had considerable rainfall, drifting a slightly weighted bunch of worms should work a treat on opening as there will no doubt be plenty in the system already. Lure fishermen might like to try metallic bladed spinners with plenty of flash. I find metallic bladed spinners often work well early in the season - Celtas and Super Vibrax are a great starting point. Also, a friendly reminder that crayfishing season and Murray cod season both close at midnight Friday night (August 31).

Our end of winter tasks
AS the weather slowly begins to warm up, many unwanted insects become more active in the garden. One of the biggest pests at this time of the year is aphids. You will see aphids enjoying the new growth on your roses. Check for them regularly and deal with them before they have too big an impact. You can squash them by hand, hose off or spray with a garlic spray or an insecticide. Whichever method you prefer. Lawns will be looking dull and patchy at the end of a cold frosty winter. Weeds will be quick to take advantage of bare patches in your lawn so now is the time to start aerating, feeding and watering. Although we have had rain you need to make sure there

is enough moisture in the ground to enable good strong growth before summer. There are weeds that you can spray for now. Bindii is definitely one to get on top of while they are small and still easily dealt with. If you only have a few you can dig them out by hand or spray with a herbicide to help eradicate. You will need to repeat in a few weeks to ensure you get the ones that germinate after the initial spray. Many bulbs will be poking their heads through the soil now and perennial plants will be sending out new shoots. This fresh growth is very tempting to snails and slugs. Snails are not as active in the colder months but you will

find their numbers will increase as the temperature rises so it is best to protect plants now. Snails are more active after rain. Put out some eco friendly snail bait, crushed up egg shells or copper barrier tape to ensure you get to enjoy your plants in their full spring glory! If you don’t mind some after dark activity in the garden, you can head out with a torch and hand remove snails - this is when they are most active. If you have chooks or ducks, they will very happily eat the snails for breakfast. Only feed them to your poultry if you haven’t used snail bait. Remember - start getting your fruit fly control organised now. Happy gardening.

FEATURE STORY
Intestinal adenocarcinoma with Tim Craig BVSc, VETERINARIAN intestinal wall that leads to narrowing of the intestinal tube. As the tube narrows the ow of food is affected and this can precipitate vomiting. With time the narrowness can be near complete and the cat’s ability to eat is severely restricted and rapid weight loss can ensue. This process can occur over many months with more severe signs of projectile vomiting only developing towards the end. This cancer often spreads to the lymph nodes near the intestines and may spread further aďŹ eld. Ultrasounds of the abdomen may pick up the intestinal abnormality as well as local lymph node enlargements. Surgical excision of the primary mass and rejoining of the intestinal segments is useful even in the face of metastasis already having occurred, as this is a reasonably slow growing tumour. If your cat is vomiting with any regularity, a veterinary assessment is a good idea. Tim Craig BVSc, veterinarian

Things began moving when a new space became available through the generosity of the resort management board, and people from the historical society, including Karen, Diana and Lyn Gibbs, began the process of setting up the new museum, including working with community members during numerous working bees. “Diana, myself and the fabulous Lyn Gibbs, a 32-year veteran of Falls Creek Ski Lifts, who had already established an amazing array of items that told the story of Falls Creek, approached former supporters and went from there, Karen said. “Lyn’s inability to throw anything out and to see the value in so many items, allowed us to start with a great base. “We began collecting new items and thus the Falls Creek Museum was reopened in 2015. “We lost Lyn in 2017, but her love of Falls Creek, her own personal memories and collection and hard work is recognised as the reason that this museum exists. “She attended the re-opening of the new museum, cutting the ribbon and I know she was thrilled with where we had ended up. “She was instrumental in its establishment. Karen, is currently chair of the Falls Creek Historical Society, said the society

and the museum could not exist without the “wonderful supportâ€? of the experienced committee members behind her. She said she loved sharing the area’s history with visitors and locals alike, and that the Falls Creek area had a rich history, including opening the ďŹ rst chairlift in Australia. “Falls Creek was established by groups of individuals who loved skiing and the alpine region,â€? Karen said. “They were here for work with the State Electricity Commission but managed to ďŹ nd ways to work and play in the snow. “From those ďŹ rst visitors came a village of hard working, hard playing and hard skiing people. “I respect the early pioneers, especially the women. “They were here through the love of the area. “Even today, the Falls Creek community are here as a lifestyle choice. “Everybody looks after each other and appreciates the difficulties of the work environment. “Falls Creek is a vibrant, full time village that is busy all year round, which makes it unique amongst the ski resorts. “Our closed village in the winter creates a wonderland that visitors get to enjoy.â€? Karen said she was passionate about history.
“Local history celebrates pioneers, trail blazers, the hardships associated with this lifestyle and the rewards that you get from it,â€? she said. “Everyone has a story, and the difficulty is ďŹ nding the right way to tell that story. “In a world that is highly digital, where the younger generation need snap shots and quick hits of news, it is lovely to show them the history through photographs, videos and movies.â€? Karen said the historical society has joined forces with the resort management arts and culture committee to work on ways of showing history through art and culture projects, and the society was also proud of their digital user guide at www.fallsuserguide. com.au, which allows visitors to walk around six stops in the village to hear and see local history. The museum is operated by a group of volunteers, allowing it to open six days a week in the winter and over special weekends throughout the remainder of the year. It is supported by the both resort management and Falls Creek Ski Lifts and also receive ďŹ nancial support from many society members. MANY cats display some vomiting from time to time in their lives. Often it is transient, but in some cases it is repetitive. It is hard to exactly deďŹ ne how often a cat can vomit without it being considered abnormal. Some would suggest that any amount of vomiting that recurs is not right. Certainly if a cat is vomiting every day or every second day, it is likely there is something not quite right causing this vomiting. Cats often suffer from intestinal inammation on a spectrum from food intolerance, through inammatory bowel disease and sometimes into cancerous changes in the intestines. A good starting point for cats that display ongoing vomiting is a diet change to a hypoallergenic diet. This can help in many situations. However, if the vomiting persists a further workup should be taken into consideration. Where a cat is losing weight, vomiting and seems unwell, there is further concern that a more serious problem is at foot. Intestinal adenocarcinoma is a slow growing cancer of the

CD Bloom by Troye Sivan BLOOM is an incomparably sweet and intimate work, well-named because from that base unfurls something grand and universal. It’s also full of pop music - a dizzy swirl of ’80s synth-pop.
BOOK I Am Out With Lanterns by Emily Gale YEAR 10 begins with a jolt for best friends and neighbours Wren and Milo. Along with Hari, Juliet, Ben and Adie, they tell a story of friendship, family, wild crushes, bitter feuds, and the power of a portrait. Published by Random House Australia
See a naturopath and have your coffee/dairy/wheat too make a huge impact to how you feel. I often ask people to eat more of those foods, rather than forgo their favourite treats. I would never dare ask a new mum to give up chocolate, or coffee. In fact, patients are often surprised when I encourage them to eat the choc coated almonds guilt free ( just make sure it’s the good quality dark chocolate ones!). Everything in moderation. I was taught that the difference between medicine and poison is dose. This is true for food - and coffee. I was recently complimented on some muffins I made for a girls’ weekend. The secret was that I followed the recipe - adding all of the sugar. If you are diabetic or have other issues with insulin resistance, eat less
WHENEVER someone ďŹ nds out I am a naturopath they are either really intrigued or really skeptical. Often it generates some kind of conversation about the supplements they take or their fear of seeing a naturopath in case they have to stop drinking coffee or eating bread for the rest of their lives. Whilst dietary modiďŹ cation and supplemental prescriptions are part of naturopathic care, seeing a naturopath does not mean giving up all your favorite foods, eating kale or taking a shopping bag of supplements. A large part of my practice focuses on what foods you could add in, rather than take out. There are so many wonderful ways to cook, jazz up basic meals, improving avour, texture and ultimately digestive compatibility for a person that can

cake and jam, but that doesn’t mean everyone has to. Believe it or not, some people can’t digest kale very well. Studies have shown that if you drink one cup of coffee daily your concentration improves. However, more than one coffee daily can reduce your ability to absorb nutrients and for many people will contribute to poor sleep, anxiety and loose bowels. And everyone’s threshold is different due to weight, metabolism digestive strength etc. Naturopathic food prescriptions are all about working out what helps or hinders your health, with supplements being the icing on the cake. If you are unwell, they can be a helping hand whilst you take time to making lasting changes to your health, diet and coffee consumption.

TECH & SCIENCE
with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ SO LONG, AND THANKS FOR ALL THE FISH: Known for their playful behaviour, dolphins are highly intelligent. They are as smart as apes, and the evolution of their larger brains is surprisingly similar to humans.
Smarter than you think - intelligence in the animal kingdom “On the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much - the wheel, New York, wars and so on whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man - for precisely the same reasons.” - Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. WE humans have the ability to learn, reason and solve problems.
We possess self-awareness, and we’re also conscious of the presence, thoughts, and feelings of others. We make tools and practice the art of deception. We’re creative and we think abstractly. We have language and use it to express complex ideas. All of these attributes are arguably signs of intelligence. This week, I thought I’d take a look at other species that displays these characteristics, often in remarkable ways. Chimpanzees The human and chimpanzee genome is at least 98 percent identical, and, unsurprisingly,
chimps display many intelligent behaviours similar to our own. Chimps make and use tools, hunt in organised groups and engage in acts of violence. Wild troops have distinct behaviours and customs. Field observations and lab experiments show chimps are capable of empathy, altruism and self-awareness. Most astoundingly, in one number-memory experiment chimps actually out-performed humans. Octopuses Given that octopuses possess nine brains (that’s right - nine), is it any wonder
that they display intelligent behaviour? Precisely how intelligent octopuses are is up for debate, given their behaviour can be difficult to interpret, but it’s believed they are disdainful of boredom. They also have the ability to learn symbols, and can learn to complete tasks through observation. They have also been observed using tools to accomplish tasks. Dolphins Alongside chimpanzees, dolphins are the most noted for their level of intelligence. Dolphins are known to use
sponges to protect their snout when foraging on the seafloor - a behaviour they pass on to their young through observation. Other signs of intelligence include distinct whistles and clicks that may serve as dolphin names, perhaps used in a type of language. Dolphins have even been trained to detect sea mines by the US Navy, saving many lives in the process, thanks to their highly evolved biosonar. Pigs Pigs are perhaps the smartest, cleanest domestic animals known - more so than cats and dogs, according
to some experts. But pigs don’t have sweat glands, so they roll around in the mud to stay cool, which contributed to the historical stigma that they are unclean, unintelligent animals. A sign of their cleverness came from experiments in the 1990s. Pigs were trained to move a cursor on a video screen with their snouts and used the cursor to distinguish between scribbles they knew and those they were seeing for the first time. To the surprise of researchers, they learned the task as quickly as chimpanzees.

Get answers to questions you won’t ask CHANNEL CHAT
THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS:

with FREYJA POSTLETHWAITE CONVERSATION these days often seems to revolve around ‘political correctness gone mad’ - people being mad about not being able to say or ask things that are considered offensive to marginalised people. ‘You Can’t Ask That’ very effectively takes this concept and allows the marginalised groups to provide honest answers and have a healthy dis-
cussion about why it is that these questions are offensive. It has received some backlash, however, it’s clear that the objective is to raise awareness about what is and what is not acceptable to say and ask, especially when you aren’t particularly familiar with the person you’re talking to. And it’s an apt reminder that even if you don’t think something is offensive, or you
Filthy Rich and Homeless (SBS Viceland, Friday, 9.30pm): People from typically ‘comfortable’ lives dive into the world in which homeless people live to experience and hear firsthand stories of their struggles. Approach with caution, and a tissue box.
◆ YOU CAN’T ASK THAT: Tonight’s season finale features eight priests from different denominations.
don’t understand why it’s offensive, that doesn’t mean it’s okay to say it. I can totally see how some people can be made to feel uncomfortable by this show, but I think that’s the whole idea.
Feeling uncomfortable forces the audience to rethink their social attitudes and to consider what they can do to change the stereotypes that would make people want to ask these questions in the first place.
This week, in the season finale, eight priests from various different denominations feature in the episode. Questioning faith, holy wine and typically ‘unholy’ activities will certainly make for interesting
discussion material. Each episode opens up a dialogue about socially acceptable behaviours and stereotypes, so I recommend tuning in with a friend or loved one with who you can have a friendly debate.
