By KYLIE WILSON THERE would be few people in Beechworth and district’s music scene who do not know Shaun Rogers. A former Beechworth Secondary College student who has also studied the music industry at TAFE, Shaun has loved having music in his life for as long as he can remember. “My earliest memories of music was my dad singing along to a song in the car,” Shaun said. “I’ve always been drawn to music and the way it can change the atmosphere of a room – or someone’s mood – really quickly. “Depending on what kind of music I’m listening to, it can make me feel positive, happy, it can bring back memories and draw out your emotions, which is what I love about it.” For the past few years he has been tirelessly involved in a number of community projects, many of them aimed at showcasing music in the community. One of the most high profile things he has done was to establish the Victorian Month of Music (which takes place in June) in 2014. “I started Victorian Month of Music because I’m passionate about music and was concerned about music piracy,” Shaun explained. “Since the start of Victorian Month of Music, we’ve focused on supporting the music industry. “The Victorian Month of Music Award, which has been running since 2016 and supports local DJs, musicians and bands from North East Victoria, has been awarded to three musicians: Riki Graham [2016], Connor Young (aka Tulpar) [2017] and Liam Packham [2018].

Parents urged to talk to kids about money as early as preschool AS children head back to school, parents are being urged to talk to their children about money, as early as preschool. Dan Crotty, National Manager of the Saver Plus program with community organisation, the Brotherhood of St Laurence, says 84 per cent of parents who do the Saver Plus program around Australia teach vital budgeting skills to their kids. “When parents role model good money behaviours and have open conversations about the household budget, we see that participant’s children are better equipped to manage their money as they grow,” he said. “This will help establish good money habits for life. It’s easy to find ways to talk to children about money, no matter how old they are,” he said. Mr Crotty said these lessons are even more crucial as we become an increasingly cashless society. “Children no longer have a tangible connection to money as we move to digital banking and tapping cards at the checkout. “They also have little understanding of how credit works and the potential impact of debt on
their finances.” Savings tips for kids from preschool to high school Pre-school • You need money to buy things • Money includes notes and coins • You earn money by working Primary school • Comparing prices and shopping around before you buy something is a good habit • You need to be patient when saving up • You can choose how to spend your money • Let your kids pay for small expenses with their pocket or birthday money. This helps them work out how far money goes. High school • Doing a budget helps you work out how you should spend your money • Credit is money that you borrow and have to pay back with interest • It is good to have savings in case of a money emergency • Keep track of mobile phone data and expenses to make sure you don’t run out of credit or get a larger bill than you expected.
with Mandi McDonald GARDENING SPECIALIST ◆ IN THE SHADE: Your trees need extra TLC during extreme heat.
Caring for trees in the heat WITH the chance of repeating myself, I’m going to talk about watering again, this time specifically in relation to trees. You may notice in your garden that there are some trees that seem to be not coping well with our extreme heat. It is important to make sure you get them through the summer so they have the chance to recover during their dormant period. As the temperature consistently stays in the high 30s to mid 40s, trees that may have survived previous summers and dry spells will be showing signs of stress this year. Their leaves may appear burnt and in extreme cases the tree can drop all of its leaves.
Local people, local places ...immerse yourself in the region
A tree will do this as a form of self preservation as it is unable to cope with staying alive as well as maintaining healthy foliage. The good news is this does not necessarily mean that your tree has died. If the branches and the buds appear healthy, keep watering the tree. It has simply shut down and gone into summer dormancy. It can often re-grow new leaves in early autumn or may even wait until the following spring if it is particularly stressed. If you are worried about your water usage and you need to prioritise, trees should be at the top of the list as they are often the most expensive and difficult to replace. They also take quite a long time to
su
reach a reasonable size. Small shrubs and flowers can be replaced easily and at a much lower cost, so spend your water and effort on keeping your trees going. Keep your fruit fly baits and traps fresh to ensure maximum effectiveness. Pick fruit and vegetables regularly. I am finding that picking my tomatoes when they have a small amount of colour and ripening them inside has helped avoid them being stung and they still taste just as good. The occasional tomato that lurks under the bush and reaches full maturity seems to be the one that has fruit fly. I usually would end my article by saying ‘happy gardening’, but this time I will finish by saying - stay cool.

FEATURE STORY
Heart murmurs WHEN listening to the chest with a stethoscope, your veterinarian may notice a heart murmur. A heart murmur is a whooshing sound of the heart replacing the normal heart beat sound as a result of abnormal blood flow through the heart. This can be due to a variety of different structural issues with the heart including, narrow vessels, valve problems, holes in the heart, and infections. Heart murmurs are not always a problem. Many heart murmurs are benign, and dogs can live their entire life with no symptoms. Other murmurs can be quite serious and can even be fatal quite quickly. Differentiating benign and aggressive heart murmurs can be done by a series of radiographs or a heart ultrasound. These diagnostics can also allow your veterinarian to determine the structural issue with the heart and determine prognosis associated with the condition. Mitral valve disease is the most common cause of murmurs in dogs. These murmurs cause a valve
with Felix DeNatris BvSc, VETERINARIAN in the heart to leak, leading to less blood pumping around the body. To compensate for this, the heart pumps harder and gets bigger. This occurs for a period of time, until the heart cannot get any bigger. When this happens, you might notice weakness, lethargy, exercise intolerance, coughing, collapse, difficulty breathing, of fluid in the abdomen. If these signs occur, then it is best to see your vet about starting on medication. Another way to determine whether the dog needs treatment or not can be determined by counting a sleeping respiratory rate. This is done at home while your pet sleeps. If the breathing rate has increased over 30 breaths, then it’s time to start medications, as this is a reliable indicator that the heart is no longer compensating and the animal has progressed to congestive heart failure.
VET CORNER THIS week’s pet of the week at Wangaratta RSPCA is Diesel, a male Staffordshire terrier that is black and brindle in colour and is five years and eight months old. To see more animals up for adoption at the Wangaratta RSPCA, visit the shelter in Connell Street or phone (03) 5722 2874.

“Our other events, Victorian Month of Music Live and the Victorian Month of Music Challenge, inspire great musical discussion and bring back the social culture of the music store.” His community involvement does not stop there, however. He has also been involved in community campaigns centred around youth centres and highlighting Myrtleford history, and has been involved with Indigo FM, the Indigo Rocks FReeZA Crew, and Beechworth Health Service (2015-2016, as part of a radio program on Indigo FM). He even popped up at the recent Beechworth Music Festival as a DJ. Shaun said he had a range of favourite musical artists, including Zag-
er and Evans, Duke Dumont, Queen, Cyndi Luper, Green Day and Blink 182. “Some of their songs have so much emotion, something that catches your imagination, some amazing sounds and their own ‘magic’,” Shaun said. He said his ultimate career ambition was to become a DJ and emcee, to allow him to work with music as a career. He said the music scene in the North East “as a whole, is in my opinion fantastic”, with plenty of DJs, musicians and bands participating in community events, but said there is always room for improvement. “I think some towns are more musically alive then others, and that’s something I think in some areas needs a bit of improving.
“I’d like to see commercial radio stations in the North East engage with the local music scene like some of our local and community stations do,” he said. Shaun said there is plenty planned for this year’s Victorian Month of Music, with events scheduled to occur this winter including the Victorian Month of Music Award, Victorian Month of Music Challenge, Victorian Month of Music’s Global Sounds Week and Victorian Month of Music Live. He urged music lovers to “stay tuned” for more information. To keep up to date on the forthcoming Victorian Month of Music, see vicmusicmonth.wixsite.com/vicmusicmonth or go to Victorian Month of Music on Facebook.

◆ EFFECTIVE: Mr Orange, my orange Predator lure with one of its three Murray cod victims from an evening fishing with Brett Corker last week.
I’M not going to bang on about the hot weather other than to say that last Friday it was so hot that even the pigs were bacon in the heat! The heat has done funny things to the local cod fishing, with some quite hot and cold fishing being experienced by many anglers, myself included. One night last week I fished for Murray cod with Brett Corker here in Wangaratta and landed three fish in a two hour period. A couple of days later I found they had slowed right down. All three fish were landed on a bright orange Predator Lure which I have nicknamed Mr Orange. The cod were
climbing all over it. Other lures on the night didn’t get a sniff apart from one half hearted surface strike that Brett had on a jointed Codger surface lure. On Saturday evening four of us fishing YouTubers (Murray Crabb Fishing, Codgobbler01, RKJ fishing and myself) fished the King River. Four fisherman fishing for close to four hours, and we only managed to land two small Murray cod with Rohan from RKJ fishing getting one and Kinglsey from Murray Crabb Fishing getting one. Both fish were undersize. Rohan caught his on a Force Ten jointed minnow from Big W and
Kingsley caught his on a small Jackall Mikey swim bait. I have had a report from Lake Buffalo of slightly improved redfin fishing to when I was up there two weeks ago with half a dozen small redfin being landed from the bank casting a gold coloured Super Vibrax bladed spinner in number one size. The fish were all small. For the first time since before Christmas we currently have a forecast without any 40 degree days in it. Let’s hope a slight cooling leads to a slight improvement in fishing consistency.

Pizzini Wines Pinot Grigio 2018 THE only thing more annoying than a heatwave is hearing everyone banging on about it everywhere you go. It’s not enough that we have to continue to live and work in heat so oppressive it’s hard to breathe when outdoors, we have to listen to people talk about it on the radio in our cars as we clutch the hot steering wheel on the way home. And watch out if you cross paths with one of the poor souls who struggle to sleep at this time of year – they have an even shorter fuse and can lash out with the speed and venom of a red-bellied black. We want to be cool, calm and collected in a heatwave, which is why I prefer leftovers, pimped up with bottle of beautiful Pinot Grigio. Lightly chilled, it’s refreshing, vibrant and food friendly. And it was perfect with a piece of cheesy vegetable frittata, whipped on the weekend by someone who saw the forecast and had no intention of turning on the oven over the next five days. We might need a second bottle – frittata’s going to on the menu for some time. Available from the cellar door in Whitfield or go to www.pizzini.com.au.

This Day in History, 1978 IT was local wisdom that any drought could be broken by staging either the Wangaratta Show or the ANA Weekend Carnival. Relief from dry conditions was sorely needed as the hardworking committee of the Wangaratta Athletics Club completed preparations for the 1978 Athletic Carnival. The carnival got under way on the Saturday, and on Sunday the rain started to fall. It eased up on Monday afternoon, but by then up to two inches of soaking rain had fallen across the catchments.

TECH & SCIENCE
with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ THE SEARCH: Professor Jason Wright and his team are writing a series of papers detailing their ambition, with the aid of NASA, to search for technosignatures which could indicate advanced alien life on other planets.
The search for E.T. might be put into hyperdrive ARE we alone in the universe? Does life exist on other planets? Are there advanced civilisations on other planets that we can detect, and if there are, what would be the societal impact of such a detection? For a very long time, to study and research such questions as a qualified astronomer has been something of a taboo, if not academic suicide. The search for alien life on other planets has not been taken seriously by credible institutes, and the development of technologies which could enable such a search have suffered because of this.
But this year the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) might just be set to go mainstream if Astronomer Jason Wright gets his way. At the American Astronomical Society meeting in Seattle in January, Wright convened a group of determined and enthusiastic scientists with the goal of getting SETI on NASA’s agenda this year. The group is writing a series of papers arguing that scientists should be searching the universe for “technosignatures” - any sign of alien technology, from radio signals to waste heat. The hope is that those papers will go into a report to the U.S. Congress at the end of
2020 detailing the astronomical community’s priorities. That report, Astro 2020: Decadal Survey on Astronomy and Astrophysics, will determine which telescopes fly, and which studies receive federal funding through the next decade. “The stakes are high,” says Wright, who is an associate professor of Penn State University. “If the decadal survey says, ‘SETI is a national science priority, and NSF and NASA need to fund it,’ they will do it.” SETI searches date back to 1960, when astronomer Frank Drake used the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia to listen for signals from an intel-
ligent civilization. But NASA didn’t start a formal SETI program until 1992, only to see it canceled within a year by a skeptical Congress, conscious of fiscal waste. Private organisations subsequently took up the slack, most notably the SETI Institute which was founded in 1985 by Jill Tarter, the astronomer who was the inspiration for Jodie Foster’s character in the 1997 film ‘Contact’. Today, the SETI Institute uses a specially designed instrument for its SETI efforts – the Allen Telescope Array (ATA) located in the Cascade Mountains of California. The ATA is embarking upon a two-year survey of tens of
thousands of red dwarf stars, which have many characteristics that make them prime locales in the search for intelligent life. The Institute also uses the ATA to examine newly-discovered exoplanets that are found in their star’s habitable zone. Additionally, the Institute is developing a relatively lowcost system for doing optical SETI, which searches for laser flashes that other societies might use to signal their presence. Such technosignatures are exactly what Professor Wright and his team are trying to zero in on in their bid to have NASA take them into their fold.
“If NASA were to declare technosignatures a scientific priority, then we would be able to apply for money to work on it. “We would be able to train students to do it,” Wright says. “Then we could catch up” to more mature fields of astronomy”. It’s certainly an interesting prospect, one which Professor Wright believes may have garnered enthusiasm in recent years. “I have the pop sociology theory that the ascension of geek culture has something to do with it,” Wright says. “Now it’s like all the top movies are comic books and science fiction.”

A cooking show or a competition? CHANNEL CHAT
THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS: The Good Doctor (Prime7, 9pm) Series return, the hospital remains in quarantine as Shaun finds himself overwhelmed by the chaos of the emergency room. I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! (Win, 7.30pm) Hosted by Julia Morris and Dr Chris Brown, this show is always a good way to have a laugh at other people’s misfortune, and find out a little more about your favourite celebrities. Married at First Sight (Nine, 7.30pm) What a ridiculous, ridiculous show…I’m so, so hooked.
SHOW: My Kitchen Rules CHANNEL: Prime7 TIME: Monday 28 at 7pm with Leah Anderson Byrne COOKING shows have become more and more focused on the competition aspects of entertainment, rather than good old fashioned cooking. I used to love watching MasterChef, before the actual food became a little left behind as the drama, rivalry and competitiveness took over the kitchen. The 10th anniversary season of My Kitchen Rules is no different, although at least this
show has consistently been about the drama, rivalry and competitiveness. And it is described as a cooking game show, so it’s not hiding the fact that the food is just part of the entertainment value. Also, the fact that each competitor rates the meal of their competition is bound to stir up some heated arguments. “This history-making season
