by KYLIE WILSON ACROSS the North East and beyond, a handful of arts councils and bodies representing the arts help bring cultural events directly to their communities. Filled with people with a passion for the arts, they help raise the profile of creative expression of all kinds and organise countless events and performances at various venues throughout the region. Numbered among the North East’s many active arts groups are Wangaratta Arts Council and Arts Yackandandah. Wangaratta Arts Council has a long connection with its community, having originally formed in 1951. The council recently entered a new era, with president of some 17 years, Marg Brickhill, handing over the reins to new president Susan Robertson. Marg said the arts have enriched her life from the moment she began studying music as a youngster, continuing into her studying dance in her 30s, and she also has a particular affinity for jazz and live performance. “The arts have enriched my life enormously and I am glad that I can help to make them more available in Wangaratta,” Marg said. “I appreciate the opportunities to experience so much arts activity in Wangaratta, especially live music. “The arts bring a vitality to communities and assist in the development of community, and they provide opportunities for healthy recreation and ways to learn. “Development of creativity in all aspects of life is very important.” She said the Wangaratta Arts Council has helped grow many local arts initiatives, including the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz, the development of the Wangaratta Art Gallery, and many more, and will continue to do so into the future. Happiness is a Pinterestworthy home, says survey DRESSING our homes is more important to our self-worth than dressing ourselves, according to new research from home loan lender, ME. According to ME’s House Proud Survey: ƺǝ ƋƊǝ Ĺëļǝ áëħŇǝ ŀÊĎçǝ Ňċëǝ ŀŇŨğëǝ ĭÿǝ their home was important to their happiness and individuality compared to only 46 per cent who said the same about their personal dress style ƺǝƊƆǝĹëļǝáëħŇǝŀÊĎçǝŇċëŨǝĹőŇǝŇĎĦëƼǝ effort and money into styling their home compared to 40 per cent who made the same investment in their personal dress style. The only group less obsessed was renters, with 59 per cent of that group reporting they put less effort into styling their homes because they rent while 54 per cent of renters said they don’t spend money on styling because that money could be put toward buying a home of their own. Not being able to afford the home of your dreams may be contributing to the obsession, with 44 per cent of all respondents stating they spent more on styling their home to compensate for living in a home below their expectations. Also, according to ME’s survey, when it comes to styling: ƺǝ ƌƇǝ Ĺëļǝ áëħŇǝ ŀŇŨğëǝ áċëÊĹğŨǝ ÊŇǝ low-cost retailers to keep costs down ƺǝ ƇƋǝ Ĺëļǝ áëħŇǝ ǝ ċÊŜëǝ ļëāļëŇŇëçǝ

Art was given the lowest priority. ME money expert, Matthew Read, said based on these results, what Australians are seeing in the mirror is less important than the mirror itself. “Whether you think it’s misplaced or not, the finding is a sure sign of the importance of ‘property status’ among many Australians. “While there’s nothing wrong with styling your home, it can involve emotional purchases and with a third of respondents regretting spending too much it’s important to stay objective. “Furnishings can be expensive so a good strategy can be to get it right the first time. “Consulting with an interior designer and setting up a master plan can avoid costly styling mistakes.”

Blooming wattles for every season WHEN wattles begin to bloom around late August, we know that spring is just around the corner. Trees and shrubs dripping with masses of bright, beautiful golden rods or balls are a joy. In 1988 the Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnantha) was officially named Australia’s national floral emblem. It bursts into bloom around the end of August. September 1 has been proclaimed “Wattle Day” in all Australian States. There are many wattles that are great garden subjects, and which flower in other seasons of the year. After a long, hot dry summer, their golden flowers can brighten up a corner of the garden on a cold, grey, autumn day. There are many choices - there are approximately 960 species of Australian wattles. About one-third of all Australia’s wattles flower in winter. Some wattles can flower at any time when conditions for flowering and seed production are optimal. These opportunists have adapted over millennia to Australia’s less-than-predictable climate. They are indigenous to dryland areas where annual rainfall is varied and irregular.

NEW PURPOSE DESIGNED FA C I L I T Y - E X P E R I E N C E D LO C A L DENTISTS/HYGIENIST

A particular favorite of mine is Acacia jibberdingensis (Willow-leafed Wattle), which flowers profusely about six weeks after a good soaking rain. Its lovely golden rods are well-displayed amongst fine, willowy foliage. It can flower for up to two months and several times a year. It is frost hardy to minus 7°C. It is long-lived, and responds well to hard pruning. It makes a lovely spreading small tree up to 3 metres high x 4 metres spread. A note on allergies: Wattles are not a major cause of wind-borne spring allergies. The culprits are flowering grasses, with annual ryegrass the most common. Wattle pollen is heavy, and just falls to the ground. The main pollinators of wattles are insects, which crawl around on the flowers. Grasses on the other hand, rely on wind to spread their pollen. You can check out the science at: www.abc.net. au/news/health/2015-09-23/dont-blame-the-Wattle/6791396.

VET CORNER

FEATURE STORY

Ongoing medications FOR many conditions your pet may be put onto medication, sometimes ongoing for a certain period of time, sometimes lifelong. Getting the diagnosis and starting the correct medication is the vital ďŹ rst step. The ongoing treatment requires you and your vet (and your pet!) to work together to ensure we continue to treat appropriately, and that we aren’t getting any untoward side effects. Depending on the medication, blood tests may be required before we even start treatment, or before we decide to continue it at an every day dose. Some of the medication we use requires a blood test to see what level it has reached in the body after a certain period of time - having this information allows us to tailor the dose for your pet, balancing the clinical signs and/or any side effects. Even if everything appears to be going wonderfully once starting medication for a condition, your pet will need regular check ups with your vet (for example every

With Julia Smith, veterinarian six months) for them to asses your pet’s health and talk to you about how everything is going. Regular blood tests, (depending on the condition and the medication this could be up to 12 months) especially monitoring kidney and liver function, is important to make sure the medication is not causing any other issues. Apart from all the health beneďŹ ts for your pet of regular veterinary check ups, vets are under strict regulations that guide us in dispensing medications, and we could be called into question if we did not know the animal/s involved and the condition for what they are being treated (for both farm and domestic pets). So while getting medication for your pet sometimes seems involved, I hope this helps explain it, and lets us all work together for the happiness and health of your pet.

PET CORNER THIS week’s pet of the week at Wangaratta RSPCA is Delta, a one year old, desexed female domestic shorthair cat with tabby/tortoiseshell fur. To see more animals up for adoption at the Wangaratta RSPCA, visit the shelter in Connell Street or phone (03) 5722 2874.

Connected to culture

Ĺś From page 1 “The Wangaratta Arts Council has contributed to the cultural vitality of Wangaratta for nearly 70 years,â€? Marg said. Susan has had a connection with the work of the council ever since she was a small girl, when her grandmother used to take her to performaces put on by the council. “My family still has contact with 100 year old Enid McKenzie, one of the arts council’s original members,â€? Susan said. She said she has been involved with council directly for about 18 months since retiring from work. “Having a son who is a Wangaratta High School/ University of Melbourne qualiďŹ ed musician gives me a greater understanding of artists performance struggles and performance opportunities,â€? she said. Susan said she is keen to embrace her new role and keep encouraging an active arts sector in Wangaratta and district. “My aspirations as president is to hopefully, with the assistance of the committee members, continue to provide a variety of cultural events that rival events one would have to travel to the metropolitan to experience,â€? she said. “Also, I am very passionate about opportunities for young artists and hopefully we can provide impetus for more music opportunities in schools. “We would be enhancing the already existing school music programs through greater collaboration and performance opportunities.â€? Susan said having a vibrant arts sector is essential for communities, adding that the Wangaratta Arts Council was always willing to consult with the community about events and projects. “We, the arts council have a community obligation to enhance peoples lives through the provision of a variety of cultural events, thus adding meaning and happiness to lives - giving people choice is very important in our busy lives,â€? she said.

◆ KEEN VOLUNTEER: Beverley Lello is a key member of Arts Yackandandah. Secretary of Arts Yackandandah, Beverley Lello, is equally passionate about both her town and cultural activities, and said the committee has grown a lot from small beginnings in 2000. Since then, it has become somewhat of an “umbrella group that has helped groups including the Yackandandah Community Choir, Uke-NDandah, poetry and writing groups, and more, as well as facilitating touring productions. Beverley said she was a secondary school English and Literature teacher and her principal interest in the arts was theatre and “any form of bringing words to life. “I feel that the arts are an essential element of our personal lives and the life of a community, Beverley said. “Exhibitions, performances and opportunities to come together with other like-minded people ensure that we connect with others in our community and keep these communities vibrant. Beverley said she was proud of the work Arts Yackandandah had done over the years. “The structure of our committee

as an umbrella for a number of organisations has meant there is a safety net when events are staged,â€? she said. “This has given groups the conďŹ dence to present quite ambitious programs. “Consistent quality means the audiences know they can be guaranteed an enjoyable evening out in their own community. “Perhaps, the greatest achievement is involving so many locals in these events,â€? she said, adding that through good audiences, prudent ďŹ nancial management and several grants, the group has been able to invest proďŹ ts back into community arts facilities. “The events we support and stage announce to the world that Yackandandah is a good place to be, even for a visit.â€? ◆ PLACE FOR TROUT: With the brown trout starting to spawn in streams now is a great time to leave them alone and concentrate our efforts of fishing in lakes such as Lake William Hovell (pictured) in the King Valley.

with ROB ALEXANDER, Wangaratta He had one other solid strike that failed to hook up. I had one report of 16 Murray cod caught at Lake Mulwala in one session, and Tony Bennet told me of several Murray cod caught over the 100cm mark over the last week. At the same time I have had a few pretty ordinary reports, including one chap that I was talking to at Majors Creek boat ramp that

had been kayak fishing with no success. The trout fishing has been a bit patchy in the streams as is often the case at this time of the year. During the week I observed wild brown trout pairing up over gravel beds, meaning they are starting to spawn. As a result of this observation, I will not be trout fishing again this season in any stream that I know contain brown trout, despite the season still being open. I know one stream that holds only rainbow trout, and if I head out fishing I will either fish that stream as rainbow trout do not start spawning for another month, or head to Lake William Hovell to target trout in the lake.

THE stable weather continues to lead to good fishing around North East Victoria. I have had a number of really good reports from Lake Mulwala over the last week. The lake is dropping quite quickly and launching a boat is difficult. Tony Bennet from Lake Mulwala Fish Camp Ski informs me that the yacht club boat ramp in Yarrawonga is the only boat ramp in the entire lake that is still in the water. Sandy Hector put his kayak in at Hogans Road boat ramp a few days ago and fished that area around the middle of the lake. Sandy only managed one fish but it was a lovely 73cm Murray cod that he caught trolling a diving lure along the edge of a submerged creek bed.

Blood pressure and belly fat HAVE you noticed an increase in blood pressure? Have you been told that your blood pressure is elevated and you need to lower it… but you don’t know how? Or has your blood pressure always been fine, but is creeping up and up? Or maybe since putting on a few kilos your doctor is suddenly worried about your blood pressure? These are common concerns that I am hearing on a regular basis at the clinic. This issue of high blood pressure is a constant source of frustration for many, especially for those that have high blood pressure and medication just isn’t working, so another blood pressure medication is introduced. If your waist measurement is over 80cm for women and 90cm for men, this commonly central/

abdominal weight can often be a large part of your high blood pressure problem. The good news is that you don’t have to get it back to 80cm. Often reducing it by 5-10cm will be enough to take the pressure off your heart and obtain a normal BP reading. Tips for lowering blood pressure caused by too much belly fat. · Join a naturopathic weight loss plan. These can allow you to lose 5-10cm of belly fat in just six weeks, you will enjoy plenty of delicious food and never feel hungry. It’s simple to do! · Increase healthy fats: flax seed oil, fish such as salmon and tuna, and avocados all increase energy, burn tummy fat and protect the heart. · Eat a palm serve of protein with each meal (3x a day) egg, fish, meat, nuts, and natural yoghurt.

These stop you craving sugar and help burn belly fat. · Reduce intake of floury grains and sugar. These contribute to belly fat and put extra pressure on the heart, elevating blood pressure. Remember alcohol contains sugar too, even the low carbohydrate beers. · Increase water and mineral intake: optimal hydration decreases the likelihood of blood becoming sticky which makes it hard to flow through our arteries resulting in high blood pressure. Optimal hydration also encourages fat loss, energy production and gentle detoxification. Tip: have a large glass of water with each main meal as well as drinking water throughout the day. Consult a naturopath today to discover simple, safe and effective ways to treat and manage your blood pressure, even if you are medicated.

FOOD TALK

WINE TALK

Rutherglen Estates 2015 Shiraz IT was great to catch up with friends at a Chinese restaurant in the city which was an old favourite, but it might not have happened if I’d been taken in by online reviews. So often punters give a venue a pasting because of a misunderstanding with their booking, they have unrealistic expectations or had a run in with a staff member, without even mentioning the food. Truth is we like to vent when we’re angry and the minute I see a review that runs too long or is verging on nasty, I take it with the grain of salt it deserves. I knew the restaurant was going to be crazy busy and the service haphazard at best, but the roast duck is out of this world which is why I brought along the Rutherglen Estates Shiraz.

with ANITA McPHERSON

The red drinkers at the table loved its deep, dark colour and the heady nose of blackberry and pepper. It’s also has a lovely weight and smooth texture which enhances the intensity of the berry and plum fruit. The toasty oak also helps emphasise the spicy, savoury characteristics and satisfying length of flavour. While it’s great with beef, the fruity savoury combo also worked well with the rich duck flesh and its wrapper of crisp, salty skin, which oozed lots of fatty juices. It’s important to give credit when it’s due and it turns out some people just know their knitting. Try the range at the cellar door in Rutherglen or find out more at www.rutherglenestates.com.au

Combine all marinade ingredients in a large bowl and mix well. Add wing sections and toss to coat. Set wings aside for 30 mins to marinate. Preheat oven to 200°C. Line two rimmed oven trays with baking paper. Remove wings from bowl, reserving marinade, and arrange in a single layer – skin side up – over the prepared trays.

Bake 25–30 minutes, basting with the remaining marinade twice during cooking. The wings are done when they are sticky and golden, and the meat separates easily when pulled. Serve with coriander leaves, fresh papaya, and citrus wedges.

â—† KEEP UP: There are a number of skills you need to keep up in the modern workforce, including coding.

Stay employable during the Fourth Industrial Revolution

IF you’re looking for a new job but not having any luck, it could be your communication, adaptability or digital proficiency that’s letting you down. According to a survey of 951 employers by recruiting experts Hays, 77 per cent said communication skills are and will continue to be important to them. This was followed by adaptability

(66 per cent), digital proficiency in new technology relevant to an individual’s job (64 per cent), innovation (63 per cent) and critical thinking (61 per cent). Further down the list were emotional intelligence (53 per cent), technical skills (43 per cent ), self-learning (40 per cent), data-based decision making (35 per cent) and coding (6 per cent).

Nick Deligiannis, managing director of Hays in Australia & New Zealand, says these are the skills employers value most and building these needs to be a top priority for today’s professionals. “As well as keeping up with the technical know-how relevant to your specific job, employers are looking to see evidence candidates can solve

new problems and work with peers to exchange knowledge and ideas, he said. “That’s why it makes sense that communication and adaptability are at the top of the list. “As technology drives more of our work tasks, employers look to their people to make gains through the way they engage and build relationships

both internally and externally as well as how they collaborate and communicate to solve constantly evolving challenges and problems. “It’s human nature to find change uncomfortable, but to survive and thrive in the workforce of today and tomorrow we must not only learn to adapt to constant change but exploit it to build our careers, he said.

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre, GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ BUILDING BLOCKS: Scientists are vying for a future where medication could be printed to specification at a molecular level, precisely tailored to individual patients.

Designer drugs and molecular printing IMAGINE if one day, you could walk into your local pharmacy, and the pharmacist could use a molecular printer to print your medication on the spot. This micro-manufactured medication could be tailored to your individual physiology and your dosage requirements as determined by your doctor. It’s a vision for the future of pharmaceuticals that a growing number of scientists hope will make medicines more affordable, personalised, and more accessible to rural areas and developing nations. On top of this, emerging molecular printing technology could even allow scientists to craft compounds that are extremely rare in nature, or simply don’t exist at all. Say you’re a medical researcher interested in a rare chemical

produced in the roots of a littleknown Peruvian flower. It’s called ratanhine, and it’s valuable because it has some fascinating anti-fungal properties that might make for great medicines. Getting your hands on the rare plant is hard, and no chemical supplier is or has ever sold it. But maybe, thanks to the work of University of Illinois chemist Martin Burke, you could print it right in the lab. In a study published in 2015 in the journal Science, Burke announced the specs of a chemistry’s own version of the 3D printer - a machine that can systematically synthesize thousands of different molecules (including the ratanhine molecular family) from a handful of starting chemicals. Such a machine could not only make ratanhine step-by-step, but

also could custom-create a dozen other closely-related chemicals some never even synthesized before by humans. That could allow scientists to test the medicinal properties of a whole molecular family. And in January this year, chemist Leroy Cronin and his colleagues reported printing a series of interconnected reaction vessels that carry out four different chemical reactions involving 12 separate steps - from filtering to evaporating a variety of different solutions. By adding different reagents and solvents at the right times and in a precise order, they were able to convert simple, widely available starting compounds into a muscle relaxant called baclofen. And by designing reactionware to carry out different chemical reactions with different reagents,

they produced other medicines, including a drug to fight ulcers and acid reflux. “This approach will allow the ondemand production of chemicals and drugs that are in short supply, hard to make at big facilities, and allow customisation to tailor them to the application,” Cronin told Science Magazine. Such reactionware could encourage the production of medicines used too rarely to justify commercial production, as well as for use in remote settings. One chief concern is that 3Dprinted reactionware could make the production of dangerous or illicit drugs easier, but it’s a concern, Cronin says, that shouldn’t disaude scientists from the beneficial uses of the technology which could save many lives. One such benefit is that distrib-

uted chemical production could stymie drug counterfeiting practices, a huge global problem in which drug manufacturers replace active medicinal ingredients with inert or even dangerous compounds. Counterfeit drugs are estimated to make up as much as 30 percent of medicines in some developing countries and cost legitimate pharmaceutical companies up to $200 billion per year. Distributed chemical manufacturing, Cronin argues, could ensure that drugs are made correctly, because each reactionware setup would only be able to produce a single medicine. It’s certainly an interesting prospect, and one that could see dramatic changes to the pharmaceutical industry in the coming decades.

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS:

Channel Chat SHOW: Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation

Batman (7.30pm, Friday, SBS Viceland): Iconic theme song, star guests, comic ďŹ ght sequences, and double entendres galore – this beloved 1960s series has it all.

CHANNEL: Nine TIME: 7.30pm, Monday with SIMONE KERWIN NEW game show offerings have provided a mixed bag in 2018. Now, to Peter Helliar’s cringe-worthy Cram and Rove McManus’ enjoyable Show Me the Movie, we can add the free-for-all that is Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation. Did we really need a reboot of the 2009’12 show hosted by Shaun Micallef, which pits players from different generations against each other in a series of nonsensical games? After just one episode, the answer is no, no we didn’t. The original series featured seasoned vet-

Back in Time for Dinner (8.30pm, Monday, ABC): Annabel Crabb hosts this series, which sees an average Aussie family’s lifestyle re-shaped each week to experience different eras.

â—† MESSY: Shaun Micallef leads the circus that is Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation. eran Amanda Keller (Baby Boomers), and young comedians Charlie Pickering (Gen X) and Josh Thomas (Gen Y) as team captains. Unfortunately, new panel members Robyn Butler (Gen X), Andy Lee (Gen Y) and Laurence Boxhall (Gen Z) don’t have the strong presence of their predecessors. And this exacerbates the inuence Micallef,

in the host’s seat again, has over the show. There are plenty of people who relish his brand of presenting, but I’m just not a Micallef fan; he serves up too much wafe and too few belly laughs. For a series based on comparing different eras, this is a relic that should have remained in the past.

Behind the News (6pm, Tuesday, ABC): Celebrate the 50th anniversary of this classic kids’ news program with a documentary, followed by a kids’ edition of Q&A. The anniversary edition of BTN screens at 10am.
