Heather is all about sharing FOR Heather Lane, information is valuable and something to be shared. The local resident recently ‘retired’ from her volunteer role at Northeast Health Wangaratta’s Well Ageing Info Hub where she had been helping out since it began in 2017. But helping people and sharing information is not a new thing for Heather, who has a background in nursing and aged care. “I’ve always been interested in that type of thing; I studied nursing and have had a range of jobs in information sharing,” she said. “I initially trained as a nurse at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne and with those skills I was qualified to work in what is now called Allied Health so I did that on and off for about seven years. “I married in 1967 and we went to live in the Mallee but as it was in the middle of a terrible drought...my husband and I moved around a bit where I did a few different jobs. “After our marriage broke down I
By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE decided I needed to do some study. “Would you believe someone at Centrelink told me not to bother being a secretary and to do a Bachelor of Arts so I did that with a focus on social sciences, psychology and a bit of law, while parenting two kids. “It was challenging but very exciting and I enjoyed learning.” Heather has had vision problems since she was quite young, which has brought some obstacles along the way. “It was eventually picked up when I was 14 because I gradually moved from the front of the classroom to the back because I couldn’t see the board,” she said. “It’s a rare genetic disease and you don’t get used to it but you learn to live with it; it sets up many challenges and having low hearing as well creates a big problem for me now.

Equine gastric ulcer syndrome EQUINE Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS) is the result of erosion of the lining of the oesophagus, stomach and small intestine. Gastric (stomach) ulcers are estimated to occur in 85-95 per cent of thoroughbred racehorses, 67 per cent of endurance horses and 58 per cent of show horses. EGUS is a serious disease and is often performance limiting. Gastric ulcers in horses and foals develop when there is an imbalance between the production of acids to breakdown the food (hydrochloric acid, pepsin, bile acids) and the production of protective factors (mucus, bicarbonate). Since horses have developed as continuous grazers, the stomach continuously secretes gastric acid (even when there is no food in the stomach). Exposure of the stomach wall to the gastric acid is thought to be the major cause of gastric ulcers. Horses with gastric (stomach) ul-
with With Dr Ellie Merritt (BVSc), Warby St Veterinary Hospital cers may present with the following signs; poor performance or reduced performance, weaving, reduced appetite, loss of condition, dull coat, anaemia. Gastric ulcers can be diagnosed by performing a gastroscope (inspection of the stomach via camera) and treated using a medication to reduce acid secretion in the stomach. To prevent the development of gastric ulcers, it is important to ensure a continuous supply of forage (grass or hay) which stimulates the production of saliva (which contains bicarbonate). The feeding of hay prior to exercise, reducing grain based diets and maintaining routine can also assist in the prevention of gastric ulcers.

◆ DIRTY: Humus-rich compost will ensure your vegetables grow strong and healthy. PHOTO: SA Dept of Environment and Water
Feeding the soil - composting 101 SPRING time is boom time in the garden. With the mild weather, warming soil and recent rainfall, gardens are coming alive. Not to mention the gardening resurgence due to COVID-19. With all this activity it’s useful to get back to some basics. Good gardens need good soils and good soils are always improved with compost. When mixed with topsoil, compost works wonders with water. It helps improve drainage on heavy soils, and retains water in sandy soil. At the end of winter, the soil in my raised veggie beds was pretty clapped out. By adding compost, I saw an almost immediate improvement in the water penetration. It also gave a boost to my new veggie seedlings. Compost is humus-rich material formed by the breakdown of organic matter. Anything that was once alive enriches the soil as it rots.
A typical house and garden produces a lot of compostable material such as fallen leaves, grass clippings, garden prunings, food waste, paper towel, coffee grounds, newspapers, spent cut flowers and weeds (without the seed heads or bulbs). Beyond the household, you may also have access to straw, sawdust, animal manure or waste from food processing. Just piling up these waste materials won’t necessarily make good compost quickly. The best approach is to mix your materials so that you have a balance in the amount of carbon and nitrogen in your heap. Woody materials, sawdust, hay, paper and fallen leaves are very high in carbon. Kitchen scraps, grass clippings, manure and old flowers are high in nitrogen. For efficient composting, a good rule of thumb is to layer your brown carbon-rich materials with equal or thinner layers of green nitrogen-rich materials. This gives the ideal ratio of 25 to
30 times more carbon than nitrogen. If you have enough space then a layered compost heap of 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.5m will create great compost within two months in warm weather. A heap of this size has enough bulk to generate heat for decomposition. The heap should be turned about weekly. This mixes the ingredients and gets air into the centre to encourage the good microbes and prevent it from becoming anaerobic and acidic. The compost heap should be kept moist but not wet. Compost is ready when it is earthy and dark brown in colour and shows little trace of the original materials. Once it has broken down, compost can be used on the garden at any time of year. It will improve the structure and fertility of any soil. In summary, compost has four main ingredients: carbon, nitrogen, air and water. Add a little time, and it’s easy to make - so why not get back to basics and build yourself a compost heap this spring.

Pizzini Wines La Volpe Nebbiolo THERE is a good reason sayings like being ‘as a cunning as a fox’ or ‘to be outfoxed’ become part of our everyday vernacular. This Day in History, 1856 HIGHWAY robber, Billy the Puntman, was captured in Albury. Perhaps attracted by the vice regal visit, Billy was walking Albury’s streets undisguised, when recognised and arrested. Billy had held up the Melbourne mail coach a few months earlier, after losing his job ferrying the punt across the Ovens River, when the new bridge had put the punt out of business. He was subsequently tried in Beechworth, and sentenced to a hefty term in prison.
THE National Bowel Cancer Screening Program is an Australian Government screening program. Other government cancer screening programs in Australia are the BreastScreen Australia and National Cervical Screening Programs. Bowel cancer screening is designed to check for signs of bowel cancer in people who do not have any obvious symptoms, but are at higher risk of developing bowel cancer because they are in the 50-74 age group. Regular screening is important because bowel cancer can develop without noticeable symptoms. Heather is all about sharing Ŷ
From page 1
“It’s the main reason I had to face reality that I couldn’t hear in meetings and retired from volunteering.” After studying, Heather did nursing again, married her second husband and then worked with the migrant community in Gippsland. “It was a wonderful job,” she said. “Providing people with information and assisting people in understanding their rights as human beings and having the information they needed, whatever they decided to do with that after we shared it. “After that job I moved
to Wangaratta in 1988 and was manager of Community Youth Support Scheme which changed to the Wangaratta Skill Share Program.” Heather moved to Kyabram in 1996 where she was the co-ordinator of Henley Apartments and supported accommodation for people over 55. She retired in 2007 and moved back to Wangaratta to be near family. “My work in the past is similar to what we do at the well aging hub; obtaining and providing information to people,” she said. “I’ve been volunteering there since it started in April 2017 because it was a way of getting involved and
being a part of the community while using the skills I have. “People would come into the hub with various questions and we would try to find the answers for them and then follow up to see how they were going. “These roles help me too; in being able to help people you’ve got to learn the information and if you don’t know you go learn it. “Just by volunteering means you get more skills and knowledge. “The more informed you are the better decisions you’ll make and just be kind to people. “I really loved the hospital and the volunteering
there is so important; many hospitals would not survive without volunteers and we’re just looking for things to do too. “Information and knowledge is part of life, it is part of learning and it is a part of being. “Don’t own the information and keep it to yourself, share it.” Northeast Health Wangaratta aged care navigator Nadia Tilson said she was grateful for Heather’s contribution. “Heather’s knowledge and expertise was an asset to the project,” she said. “We truly valued all her hard work towards ageing well in our community.”
THE Aged Care Navigators is part of a national trial led by COTA (Council on the Ageing) Australia and funded by the Australian Government. This trial started early 2019 and has been extended to June 30, 2021. It is a free, confidential service that provides independent information about aged care services and how to access them. The trial will experiment with different ways of helping people to find their way around the aged care system. This will inform Aged care services which approaches work best and to improve the way information is provided in the future. If you have any questions in relations to Aged Care services,

GONE FISHING
TECH & SCIENCE
◆ MUD MARLIN: I landed this 78cm, 4.5kg carp in Ovens River at Peechelba using worms as bait on Saturday afternoon.
Inconsistent weather has made fishing very mixed WHAT a strange week it has been with the weather. From 25 degrees, down to freeing cold with low level snow and now it is forecast to be back up to 28 degrees by the end of the week. The inconsistent weather seems to be lending itself to inconsistent fishing. I have had reports from Lake Nillahcootie of excellent yellowbelly fishing, as well as people catching absolutely nothing (including us last week). I can not help but think that as soon as we start getting some stable warm weather, such as what is forecast later this week, that the yellowbelly in Lake Nillahcootie, and other lakes around the region will start to really pick up. The trout fishing continues to be quite good. On a trip to a small tributary of the Ovens River last week I noticed that the trout were hitting my lure a lot harder than the week before - they seemed to be a lot more aggressive. I only managed to catch three as the creek was very small and overgrown but they were certainly switched on. I was using a Strike Tiger
with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ ORIGINS: While the flightless Galapagos cormorant is no looker, we owe a lot to this strange bird as it was, at least in part, the inspiration for the theory of evolution by natural selection.
Bizarre birds and where to find them
with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA nymph soft plastic in black and gold colour. I have received quite a good report of trout fishing in the Ovens River near Harrietville. The trout were all caught on a rooster tail bladed spinner and were not very big. I have also had several reports of OK trout fishing in the King River. Not great, but just OK both above and below Lake William Hovell. I went angling in the Ovens River at Peechelba on Saturday afternoon. I was using worms in an attempt to catch a yellowbelly. I caught six large carp and one small trout cod of around 20cm long (which was released). One of the carp was a whopping 78cm and 4.5kg and took me over 10 minutes to land using 6lb line.
THIS week, I thought we’d do some bird watching. Not your run of the mill, boring old bird watching, mind you. These are true aberrations of the avian world. Hoatzin A bird with body odor? The hoatzin, a primitive Amazonian species, purportedly smells like cow dung due to its vegetation-based diet; some people claim that the scent is actually more pleasant. They are the only species of bird that boasts a ruminant digestive system, like a cow’s. And like cows, they spend a lot of time just lying around and digesting. Victoria crowned pigeon A far cry from its pedestrian cousin, the rock dove (Columbia livia)—commonly known as the flying rat—the Victoria crowned pigeon (Goura victoria) of New Guinea is lavishly attired in rich cerulean plumage and, as its name implies, boasts a lacy crest of feathers on its head. At roughly the size of a chicken, they are the largest living pigeon species. Galapagos cormorant Of the 30 or so species of cormorant, only the Galapagos cormorant (Phalacrocorax harrisi) is flightless.
The islands, and this species, are famously known as the inspiration for Charles Darwin’s book ‘The Origin of Species’. Classified as vulnerable by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), these raggedy-winged piscivores are only found on two of the Galapagos islands. Flightlessness often develops in birds that are adapted to insular island environments free of natural predators. However, the species is an easy mark for the cats and dogs introduced to the islands by humans. Not exactly a sitting duck, but close. Shoveler Speaking of ducks…the four species of shoveler resemble their more-recognisable relatives, such as the mallard and the wood duck, until you get to the beak. Instead of a standard-issue duck bill, these odd birds sport flattened mandibles that resemble, well, shovels. They use them to strain small organisms from the marshes that they inhabit. Duck hunters call them “neighbor’s mallards” because the taste of their flesh is somewhat unpleasant. What better way to serve up a little petty revenge to an annoying neighbor than “gifting” them with

rancid-tasting duck meat? Frogmouth The 12 species of frogmouth are among the oddest of the avians. Related to the swallows and swifts, which are renowned for their acrobatic pursuit of flying insects, the endomorphic frogmouths aren’t nearly so aerodynamic. They prefer to sit and wait for insects and other small animals to pass by. The frogmouths resemble frowzy, gigantic versions of their petite relatives. They are the closest relatives of the owls, for which they are often mistaken. Scarlet iiwi The sprightly scarlet iiwi (Vestiaria coccinea) of Hawaii flits through the forests of its native islands in search of nectar, which it extracts from flowers using its curved, pointed beak. Though it closely resembles the South American honeycreepers, it is actually more closely related to the finches, a recent discovery based on studies of its skeletal structure and its genetic makeup. Finches typically have triangular bills suited to seed eating, so the radical divergence of the iiwi and the Hawaiian honeycreepers to which it is related constitutes a remarkable instance of evolutionary plasticity.
