Spoiling the bush

By BELINDA HARRISON

LANDSCAPE painter Andrew Pye may have dropped out of his highly sought after RMIT Fine Art degree 20 years ago, but that hasn’t hindered his love for painting or his ability to successfully exhibit the work he feels compelled to create. Speaking of his BA Fine Art he said, “I wasn’t ready. My art was not good and I was failing.” But Andrew didn’t stop painting, creating works of the urban terrace houses of North Carlton and Fitzroy where he was living instead. In 2005 he married Catherine, a nurse midwife, and spent time in Wangaratta and the North East when visiting Catherine’s parents’ farm, hoping to one day move to the area to be closer to the landscape. “Catherine’s not overly creative, but she is super practical, and that really helps with the art practice,” Andy said. “She has a really keen eye for what works … which helps me after I’ve been in the studio for 12 hours and can’t determine if my day’s work is any good.” In 2009 Andrew enrolled at Deakin University, completing a Bachelor of Arts with honours, and almost 10 years later with his Deakin degree ‘not being put to use’ he decided to return to study, enrolling in Master of Teaching (secondary) at Charles Sturt University. “Some of my favourite painters have been teachers so I went and did a Masters,” he said. He is just about to graduate and could specialise in teaching English, or more broadly in art, politics, history or humanities, unless his wife lets him study some more - a PhD would interest him. Andrew and Catherine have four children ranging in age from two to 12 years old so life can be pretty busy but, living in central Wangaratta in a charming home built in the 1880s, is much more relaxing compared to the ‘big smoke’.

Feline Calicivirus (cat flu) ON July 11 2009, a five and a half year old, de-sexed, female, Siamese cat was presented to us a little depressed, off her food, hyper-salivating (drooling a lot of saliva), with elevated heart and respiratory rates and a normal temperature. A definitive diagnosis was not made but the cat was treated symptomatically and discharged. On July 13 2009, she presented again in a deteriorated state with severe respiratory distress. Fluffy was treated with intensive care therapy over the next three days and despite this treatment she died of respiratory failure. Fluffy was from a multi-cat household and the owner reported the other cats were beginning to show similar signs. By July 16, a four and a half year old female Siamese with similar clinical signs had been admitted for treatment and several other cats in the household with similar but milder signs were being treated at home. In total, all five cats in the household were infected and one died. The owner also reported a friend’s cat to have come down with the same clinical signs and we have

with Andrew Colson, Veterinarian seen several other cats from the surrounding area with both direct and indirect contact suffering from what appears to be the same disease. Samples were collected from the deceased cat and on July 24 2009 it was confirmed by the University of Melbourne Veterinary School’s pathology centre that the infectious agent was Feline Calicivirus. Feline Calicivirus is part of the infectious feline respiratory disease complex (cat flu). It is a highly contagious respiratory tract disease virus that usually only severely affects very young or very old cats. It may also affect cats that are in some way immuno-suppressed like those carrying Feline Immuno-deficiency virus (Feline AIDS). Routine feline vaccination which includes “cat flu” will reliably protect cats from this disease. It should be noted that the cat that died had been vaccinated as a kitten but it had not received any follow up immunisations.

◆ HAPPY PLACE: Use your imagination to create your own sensory garden for health and wellbeing.

Sensory Gardens

ARE we getting enough out of our gardens? We follow trends, aesthetically apply a visual approach to planting, manicure our garden beds and lawns but are we offering any consideration towards our senses when designing a garden or just focusing what we like to see? We have always known that gardening is good for us. Studies have told us that gardening can be an oasis for mental wellbeing. Gardening also helps improve physical fitness and overall health, so why not apply thought to stimulating the senses in your garden design? Now stimulation can occur courtesy of plants through foliage or flower, it could also be the use of materials or objects placed in the garden to engage the five senses of sight, smell, touch, taste and sound of the individual and encourage them to explore and take in the garden experience. The idea of sensory gardening was inspired by the horticultural therapy movement in the UK during the 1970s. By planning your garden for each of your five senses, you can create a relaxing atmosphere for yourself and others to enjoy, they can also be educational. Sensory gardens were originally developed for those with specific needs in mind, but everyone can benefit from a sensory garden. These types of gardens are popular and beneficial especially for those who have sensory processing issues. To get the maximum use from a sensory garden, it is important to consider what plants and features will best

achieve the atmosphere that is desired and enrich the overall sensory garden experience. Consider plants with fragrant foliage such as scented geranium, rosemary, lavender, mint or other plants that when touched omit an aromatic fragrance. There are many flowering plants that could be used not only for their flower fragrance but to attract birds and bees - gardenia and osmanthus for fragrance, salvia and buddleia for bees, grevillea and callistemon for birds. Thought could also be given to leaves that are soft to the touch, such as lambs ears, phlomis fruticosa, salvia leucantha and senecio cineraria, tall grass plants that move in the wind like miscanthus and fountain grass are among other plants that could be considered. Interesting elements like wind chimes or a water fountain located in specific area placed in a way that encourages you to explore, take a visual slant, add a whimsical collection of your favourite things and put in an obvious position to draw you further into the garden. By using your imagination, a sensory garden may give you the opportunity to use your creativity in ways you might not have considered before, challenge yourself to design a garden that offers more than an aesthetic visual approach and offers one that stimulates the sensors. Happy gardening.

yet still hinting at that cherry fruit. It can be enjoyed on its own but really suits smoked fish, egg-based dishes, cheeses and antipasto, and it’s also great with charcuterie. That’s a lot of boxes ticked, including being likeable, local and good to look at too. Just like the people you enjoy hanging out with.

This Day in History, 1975 A FLASH flood in Wangaratta followed the dumping from the heavens of 33mm of rain in an hour. The floods swept along Rowan Street, ankle deep through the Rickards and Henderson building and Carrolls Supermarket. Waves rolled across footpaths and into buildings, as the speeding cars of exuberant youths aqua-planed along Rowan Street.

with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson and Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) ◆ A LOT ON YOUR MIND: Prolonged stress and anxiety can run you down and fatigue you quickly.

Many ways to treat fatigue FATIGUE is one of the most common reasons people walk in our door and sit across from us in a consultation. Fatigue is more than just feeling tired. Fatigue is a condition in which you feel exhausted all the time, even if you are well rested. It is not a normal part of getting older or a birthright of being a mum or for those who are stressed and anxious, it is a symptom of something that is wrong. There are many different causes of fatigue, so you should see your doctor to do some testing to find out why you are so tired, and your naturopath if there is still no explanation or you want to improve your diet and lifestyle and use natural medicines to assist getting more energy. Fatigue comes in many different guises. Fighting an infection, when our emotional health has not been well supported, not keeping up with our lifestyle, burn out and stress. As such there are many ways to treat fatigue. Types of fatigue: Stress and anxiety: Running on nervous energy, being chronically stressed, catastrophising, not plugging in/taking time to unwind will run our batteries pretty low pretty fast. Nutritional deficiencies: These are more common than you would think.

In particular running low in Magnesium, B vitamins, iron and calcium can make us pretty zonked. Some of these can be checked for on a blood test like B12 and iron, others we simply use clinical signs, like nail, tongue, skin and muscle signs. And then we have our NES scan, which also alerts us to which nutrients you are drawing on in large quantities right now. Post viral fatigue: When you have been sick and the main symptoms are gone and the virus is no longer contagious, but you are left with lethargy and very little energy reserves. Often as a result of not convalescing (resting) during the virus, this can, if not addressed, turn into chronic fatigue syndrome. Glandular fever is a common infection that leads to this type of fatigue, but in truth, any virus where you haven’t convalesced properly can lead to this. Sophie and Belinda work hard to find the cause of your fatigue and then work with you to give you tools to manage and improve your energy easily. How? Because we understand and have been where you are!

WHEN you’re invited to an early lunch it can leave you in a quandary about just what variety of wine you should bring. Unless it’s cuisine-specific, or you know exactly who is coming and what they like to drink, it’s usually best to choose something which will tick a lot of boxes. It seems there are even people who are squeamish about drinking before the sun is over the yardarm, although they’re not the kind I spend a lot of time with. While the easy go-to might be Prosecco, I think a Rosato makes a great choice for a menu that might be brunch-like, where there may be white and red drinkers alike. Politini Wines Nero d’Avola Rosato is made from a red wine grape variety native to Avola in Sicily and it contributes to the pretty, salmon pink colour. It has a beautiful, floral aroma - a bit rose-petal like, a bit spicy and also quite cherry-fruity. There are red fruits in the flavour too but this is a decidedly savoury wine; pleasantly acidic and leaving the palate cleansed,

GONE FISHING

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au â—† ASSASSIN: In simplest terms, a bacteriophage is an organism that hunts down and infects speciďŹ c types of bacteria. This property make them a potential weapon against superbugs.

Fun time to fish in any weather FROM 30 degrees to 13 degrees and then back up to 30 degrees all in a week, welcome to spring. This type of ďŹ shing pattern can lend itself to very good trout ďŹ shing. The warm days bring the insects which the trout feed like mad on, and the cold days help to keep the water temperature down while the trout stop feeding as actively. Tip: On the warm days, go trout ďŹ shing. On the cold days, go somewhere else and ďŹ sh for carp, redďŹ n or yellowbelly. Lake Nillahcootie is ďŹ shing very well at the moment. It is really starting to ďŹ re with plenty of yellowbelly being caught from the bank and by boat. Worms and small yabbies have been working well, and from my personal experience I can’t help but think that live shrimp would work very well over there at the moment too. As stated earlier, the trout ďŹ shing has been great with warm sunny days being the best time to catch trout. I have had reports of trout

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA caught in the Ovens River near Bright, the Kiewa River at Mt Beauty and the Snowy Creek upstream of granite at this week. This really is a fantastic time of the year to go ďŹ shing in North East Victoria. I went to Waranga Basin last Thursday and caught seven small redďŹ n just casting a Strike Tiger nymph soft plastic from the bank. Well kind of from the bank, I was standing in water up to my waist. (That was one of those 30 degree days I was talking about). I cannot help but think that if I had of taken my kayak and gone out a bit deeper I may have been in with a great chance of picking up some larger ďŹ sh. Waranga Basin is a great lake and a favourite of mine, but avoid it on windy days.

Celebr

Bacteriophages, the answer to superbugs? IMAGINE an organism that could hunt you down across a vast distance, attach itself to you via its long, spindly, barbed legs, and then inject it’s genetic material into you - effectively taking over your body and forcing you to incubate and birth millions more of these organisms which in turn burst out of your body and hunt down more of your kind. Sounds like something out of Ridley Scott’s ‘Alien’, right? Well, I have some good news. These organisms are very real, and you’re currently covered in them. Billions of them, in fact. Collectively known as bacteriophages, these microscopic organisms are, very fortunately, harmless to humans, but prove quite deadly to bacteria and may just hold the answer to the problem of superbugs - bacteria that have evolved and become immune to antibiotics. Let’s back up a moment Prior to the mid-twentieth century, people would commonly die of all sorts of bacterial infection. The smallest cut, if infected, could prove terminal for people, and infections such as pneumonia, gonorrhea or rheumatic fever would often result in the death of a patient. In 1928, Professor of Bacteriology Alexander Fleming returned from a holiday and discovered something peculiar in a petri dish containing Staphylococcus - bacteria that cause boils, sore throats and abscesses. It was dotted with colonies, save for one area where a blob of mold was growing. The zone immediately around the mold - later identiďŹ ed as a rare strain of Penicillium notatum - was clear, as if the

mold had secreted something that inhibited bacterial growth. Fleming found that his “mold juiceâ€? was capable of killing a wide range of harmful bacteria, such as streptococcus, meningococcus and the diphtheria bacillus. About a decade later, pathologist Howard Florey and Ernst Chain at Oxford University began the work of turning penicillin from a laboratory curiosity to a life saving drug. Wartime constraints made progress difficult for the researchers, but by the mid 1940’s, commercial production and distribution was in full swing - beginning the era of antibiotics, a miracle medicine that has saved countless lives. In the words of Jeff Goldblum, ‘Life ďŹ nds a way’ The invention of antibiotics might have been a ‘happily ever after’ moment for humanity, but bacteria is an organism, just like every other form of life on Earth and, just like every other form of life, it evolves and adapts in order to survive a changing environment. As the use of antibiotics became more widespread, and it’s usage became more spurious as production costs decreased, more and more bacteria was exposed to antibiotics. As a result, the strongest strains of a virus would live long enough to reproduce and eventually superbugs were born monstrous bacteria that are immune to antibiotics. It’s estimated that around 290 people in Australia die each year from resistant superbugs, and approximately 23,000 people died in America in 2017. Alarmingly, it’s estimated that if current trends continue, superbugs could kill

more people than cancer by 2050. Enter the bacteriophage While the concept of injecting a genocidal, mass replicating virus into our bloodstreams might, at ďŹ rst glance, seem like an incredibly bad idea, bacteriophages possess a number of interesting properties that make them attractive as a treatment against bacterial infection. Firstly, while antibiotics are a kind of carpet-bomb solution to killing bacteria killing off good and bad bacteria in our bodies indiscriminately - bacteriophages are specialised killers, only targeting a speciďŹ c bad bacteria. They are so specialised, in fact, that they are unable to harm humans at all, our cells are simply too different. Secondly, while bacteria have evolved and become immune to antibiotics, bacteriophages also evolve - effectively engaging in an arms race with bacteria that they are presently winning by a landslide. Thirdly, even if bacteria did manage to evolve and become resistant to bacteriophages, current studies show that in order to build such resistance, bacteria must give up it’s immunity to antibiotics. This would allow medical scientists to trap bacteria in a catch-22 situation - die by bacteriophage, or die by antibiotic. It’s still early days, and while some experimental bacteriophage treatments have been conducted with very effective results, authoritative bodies - such as the Food and Drug Administration - have yet to approve the treatment, leaving pharmaceutical investors reluctant to provide necessary funds. The future will tell if humanity teams up with bacteriophages in the next major battle against superbugs.
