FARMERS burned out by the Mickleham-Kilmore bushďŹ re last month are furious that authorities used road-blocks across 24,000 hectares to exclude them and essential services from their farms for up to three days. Tom McDonell, who farms about 2500ha near Darraweit Guim, said the exclusion deďŹ ed common sense and he was “pretty outragedâ€?. “It (the exclusion) was far worse than the ďŹ re itself,â€? Mr McDonnell said. When he spoke with Southern Farmer two weeks after the February 10 ďŹ re, he had lost 10,000 sheep and 400 agisted cattle because of the ďŹ re. And that was the bulk of the ďŹ nal livestock death tally compiled by the Victorian Department of Environment and Primary Industries at the end of February - 16,150 animals of all kinds destroyed. A week earlier the tally was 18 houses, about 12,000 sheep, 450 cattle, more than 300 other animals and at least 1200km of fencing. Mr McDonell, his employees and DEPI staff had had to shoot thousands of sheep largely because of severe lung damage from ingesting smoke and heat. “When you open them up their lungs are just full of gunk,â€? he said. Mr McDonell went on national radio a couple of days after the ďŹ re saying he’d lost 7000 sheep. Less than a week later he had lost 10,000 as he found and killed more
hopelessly burned animals. Certainly the biggest landholder in the area – his farm was more than 10 per cent of the burned region – his losses were far and away the biggest in the ďŹ re. But the ďŹ gure was not ďŹ nal: two weeks after the ďŹ re as he was still ďŹ nding animals which had to be shot. Mr McDonell was able to bring one excavator onto the farm on the night of the ďŹ re to start burying stock immediately. But because of the Victoria Police road-blocks – sometimes two on each road – he was unable to bring in two more excavators, operators and fuel to dig graves, or trucks to move surviving stock, until three days had passed. He said Environment Protection Authority personnel arrived on February 13 to dictate where livestock would be buried but by then the grave sites were well established. One DEPI ofďŹ cer of the dozens eventually allowed into the ďŹ re zone told Southern Farmer that they had to work up to 15-hour days to put livestock out of their misery as soon as possible. Fran Cleland saw her house burn in the ďŹ re. But her strongest words were for the road-blocks and the way in which they stopped farmers from attending to their livestock. “They caused uncounted agony for so many animals,â€? Ms Cleland said. “We saw a farmer stuck for three days at the Wallan refuge, frantic for his sheep.

She said the fact she and her husband Reg had to ďŹ ght for the knackery truck to get to their farm meant their sons had to shoot animals they loved. Australian Veterinary Association president Dean Gardiner also condemned the delay in enabling farmers and others concerned with the health of ďŹ re-affected animals to tend to stock. He said that it might be novel and not easy to start prioritising animals’ welfare, but bureaucrats needed to understand that farmers were usually very emotionally attached to their animals. In January 2013, farmers and vets involved in mopping up after ďŹ res at HeyďŹ eld were prevented from entering burnt farms by Victoria Police road-
blocks for several days. But late last year Country Fire Authority commissioner Craig Lapsley said vets “would be placed in the second access tier, alongside infrastructure and utility expertsâ€?. It has not happened. For the past three years the AVA, RSPCA, fire brigades, police and other bodies have been developing a national protocol to allow farmers, vets and others through roadblocks sooner. But the protocol is still pending. No one died in the ďŹ res and 16 to 18 houses were destroyed. About 1200km of fences was burned although the ďŹ nal ďŹ gure won’t be known until insurance assessors have made their inspections. BlazeAid co-ordinator Lyn Bailey told Southern Farmer that she antici-
pated its volunteer teams of fence builders would be occupied in the ďŹ re area for the next six months. A depot was established at Wandong on February 24 and another is likely to be set up at ClarkeďŹ eld. When Southern Farmer met John UpďŹ eld, Kilmore, he was rebuilding a roadside fence for neighbor Ian Aberdeen. Because Mr Aberdeen runs dorper sheep, he not only used the existing seven plain wires which survived the ďŹ re but chose to have Mr UpďŹ eld attach new prefabricated fence to make the paddock more stock-proof. Mr UpďŹ eld lives on a 16ha property and was able to save his house. But he lost about 2km of fences which were not insured. “I was quoted a premium of $4000 a year about ďŹ ve years ago to insure

a trailer-mounted ďŹ re unit which saved their house and buildings. Most of their 16ha of paddocks burned out. But they had taken in several cattle which escaped from a neighbor’s farm owned by a Melbourne resident. South of Darraweit Guim a 500-tonne straw bale bunker of plastic covered wheat, harvested barely a month ago, escaped unscathed despite the ďŹ re burning right up to it. Until recently the property had been owned for many years by the Hoban family. Mitchell Shire, based in Broadford, has set up two recovery centres for ďŹ re victims at the Kilmore and Wallan libraries. Most of the ďŹ re was within the shire’s boundaries – some was in the Macedon Ranges shire – and ratepayers who have been burnt have been invited to apply to the shire to defer rate payments until May 31without incurring interest. Meanwhile, Mr McDonell managed to save his house and was expecting the ďŹ rst BlazeAid volunteers to start restoring his fences late last month.

the 35 year-old fencing which was close to the end of its life anyway,â€? Mr UpďŹ eld said. “So as it will cost me less than $20,000 to rebuild them, I reckon I will come out ahead.â€? Asked if he would replace the fencing with fireproof materials like concrete posts and fence ends, he said he liked the look of wooden fencing and could not lift concrete posts onto his tractor-mounted post driver anymore. Fencing contractor Michael Walker, No 3 Creek Road, Kilmore, said he had managed mostly to keep the ďŹ re out of his property with hoses and buckets although it had very nearly got into his woolshed. A trailer-mounted ďŹ re unit is high on his priority list for next ďŹ re season. An excavator-equipped earthmoving contractor until recently, Mr Walker launched in a timely manner into the fence contracting business to keep himself busy during winter when earth was usually too wet to move. GRAINCORP Oils has announced an investment of $125 million to secure the long-term viability of its integrated edible oils and spreads processing operations in Australia, largely involving canola. The investment will boost the competitiveness of locally produced food and food ingredients against imported products and deliver significantly improved environmental performance. One of four sites to be expanded is GrainCorp Foods’ West Footscray operations which will be upgraded to deliver a world-class food processing plant, with additional capability including retail spreads, bakery fats and
shortenings. “This project involves creating a strategic hub within Victoria that is located far closer to key oilseed growing regions,” GrainCorp Oils’group general manager Sam Tainsh said. “It delivers a logical and more efficient focal point for the sourcing, crushing, refining and distribution of our locally produced edible oils and food ingredients. “This is our $125 million vote of confidence in Australian food manufacturing at a time of uncertainty for many manufacturers in the country.” At other sites the consolidation of edible oils refining and packing op-
erations in Numurkah will be expanded and upgraded to add vegetable oil processing capabilities and a plant at Murarrie, Queensland will be relocated to a larger site. About 44 new jobs will be generated at the expanded plants in West Footscrayand Numurkah. It is expected the additional economic activity in these regions will also account for up to 400 new indirect jobs. The upgrades too will deliver improved environmental performance, through substantial net reduction in carbon emissions of 25,000 tonnes per year due to the replacement of outdated coalfired equipment, which is
currently used to generate steam. In addition to improving the competitiveness of Australian-produced food ingredients, the project will ensure there is ongoing strong domestic demand for Australian

‘Spudcasts’ for potato pearls AUSVEG has launched ‘Spudcasts’ – research and development podcasts – to enable Australian potato growers quickly to know the latest R&D information. AUSVEG will produce a series of R&D-focused audio programs in 2014 as part of activities undertaken for the Potato Industry Extension Program. Each Spudcast episode will address a key issue affecting the sector and will be available for potato levy payers to stream online from the AUSVEG website (www.ausveg.com.au). Episodes will also be able to be downloaded onto a portable audio device, such as a smartphone or MP3 player. Growers with tractors equipped with a USB input in the cab stereo, such as those in the John Deere range, can also listen to the programs while out in the field. The episodes will feature interviews with a range of industry stakeholders, including researchers, growers, agronomists and supply chain representatives. Episode one of the Spudcast series, to be released in conjunction with the February-March 2014 issue of Potatoes
Australia magazine will focus on potato export opportunities in Asia. This follows the Australian Government’s recent announcement of a free trade agreement (FTA) reached between Australia and South Korea, which will see the immediate elimination of tariffs on potatoes. “With more and more potato growers using smartphone apps and other technologies as part of their day-to-day crop management practices, these Spudcasts could prove a valuable tool for industry members,” said AUSVEG special projects coordinator Luke Raggatt. “AUSVEG recognises the need to communicate R&D material to Australian potato growers using a variety of effective and convenient mediums. “These Spudcasts will ensure that all Australian potato producers with an internet or 3G connection, irrespective of their location, have the chance to hear from leading potato experts and fellow growers about important industry issues. “We’re kicking off the series by investigating an issue that has been a hot topic in Australian politics lately – the growth in export opportunities for Australian food producers.”

Jones family keeps food mile By DAVID PALMER A LT H O U G H t h e Jones family promotes its 500-hectare farm across the volcanic hills north of Smeaton as the Tuki Trout Farm, it also produces lamb and beef and provides an on-farm restaurant where all three products can be eaten. Add to that six cottages built by the Jones from stone on the farm and the Stoney Rises property boasts a home away from home for many Australian and international visitors. Owned and operated by Rob and wife Jan Jones and their sons David and Alastair, the property was acquired by Rob’s father Don and his wife Violet in the 1940s. Don’s ambition was not just to keep running an established sheep grazing property but to maximise the resources at the family’s disposal. He established one of the largest commercial flocks of New Zealand bred Tukidale sheep in Australia and somewhat modified, they still provide the excellent lamb
served in the Tuki Fish Farm/Stoney Rises restaurant. A coarse wool breed, they produce some of the finest carpet wool in the world. Rob told Southern Farmer he and his sons were refining the Tukidales they’d had for 40 years into more of a crossbred type. “It has been wonderful to have Tukidales with horns, but it’s nicer to have them without,” he said. Currently they have about 15 lambs a week killed for their 240 seat restaurant. Tuki Trout Farm is 20km from Daylesford, Creswick and Clunes and 40km north of Ballarat. The trout farm, restaurant and stone cottages are about two kilometres off the main road in the middle of the Jones’ Stoney Rises property, historically. The family decided about three decades ago to capitalise on extraordinary assets and particularly a good spring water supply, excellent volcanic soil and views extending 100km to the north and west across

the Loddon Campaspe valleys, In 1985 they employed an earthmoving contractor to terrace a central north facing slope of Stoney Rises and excavate seven ponds on different contours, to be fed by the spring. They now provide a fishing facility and fresh fish for visitors and food
for the restaurant. More recently they established an earthmoving contracting business operating from the farm and built a large dam further down the range using their own equipment. “So we’ve been able to do quite a bit of our own development in the latter stages with our own equip-
ment,” Rob said. The Jones buy in rainbow trout fry and initially grow them out in the pond nearest to the start of the spring water supply. When Southern Farmer called, there were about 12,000 rainbow trout about 50mm long in that pond. As they grow they
are progressively moved down the chain of ponds, with the aim of selling the 30,000 they grow every year either straight to the public from the ponds, smoked or via the restaurant, at an ideal weight of 400g. Rob said visitors had the option of catching their own fish with provided

rods and sometimes if a visitor wants a large trophy fish, he is directed to the bottom pond where fish weighing several kilograms might oblige. “We’re always trying to grade them so they are not excessively big, although it is nice to see a few going well which we can put in the bottom pond, where someone can catch a trophy trout, because sometimes that’s a lifetime experience for a visitor,” he said. Rob said fish growth is relative to the area of water and the amount of food they get. “But a meal size trout needs to be 400g and not 1.5kg,” he said. He said aquaculture feeds their tourism business. However there is an important distinction in the visitors because some people want to catch fish and some want to just eat one. “But it is important for us to value add as much as possible so some people coming to functions or to eat in the restaurant, end up staying overnight too.” In fact, Rob said, there aren’t many people in aquaculture, “because unless you are prepared to value add, you can’t achieve the economy of scale doing just one thing like providing fresh fish”. So Rob and Don built the restaurant and later the accommodation cottages largely using stone from the farm. Then they extended the restaurant. They both worked extraordinarily long hours together but with enormous skill; the farm stone cottage walls and inbuilt stone fireplaces are absolutely plumb, or as plum as a natural rounded stone wall can be. The father and son team also built a couple of hundred metres of landscaped dry stone walls around the complex.

“We’ve landscaped a lot because a tourism business allows you to self indulge,” Rob said. “At the same time though, if you build a significant sculpture or landscape, it is very satisfying because it will last; if you grow 50 wheat crops in a lifetime you really have nothing left to show at the end of it.” Southern Farmer told Rob he seemed a very contented man and he agreed
saying, “The biggest thing in life is not to be angry and frustrated; be relaxed where you’re at so if there is a disaster you can find a solution and simplify your line of attack.” But undoubtedly there has been a great deal of hard physical and mental work getting to that point, not least being the recycling of countless tonnes of farm rock into beautiful buildings and walls. He said he and his family had had to become

effective salesmen too, to keep the business sustainable. “If you’re good at winning functions you can double your business over time whereas in farming if you produce 1000 lambs and sell them for $100 each, you can’t just say I’ll produce another 1000,” he said. But in one instance at Tuki, a seemingly out of the blue booking led to the Jones providing a meal for 80 people. “So the yield can be very significant,” Rob said. Quite recently the Jones added a new dining room, bar and glassed in balcony so they can now accommodate 140 people in the restaurant at any one time. It is licensed and open from 11am to 6pm daily. However, during the recent 10 year drought, maintaining and producing fish from ponds relying on a depleted spring, became difficult. Rob said, “It was essential for us to continue trading at all costs during the last drought and we did trade and we did give service.
“We have done well from aquaculture but we had to have a strong commitment and a sense of surviving against all odds, in one of the driest decades for a long time”. He does not expand on the difficulties encountered from a greatly diminished water supply, except to say the family grew the business through adversity and became a reliable provider. Rob’s father, Donald George Jones – he is Robert Donald Jones – knew what taking it on the chin meant. “Being born in the late 1920s, my father saw the hard times of the Depression, rabbit plagues, wars and, of course, droughts,” Rob said. “But he kept well and died aged 80 just recently.” The six cottages built by the pair using farm rock as the main material are surrounded by drystone walls and gardens and established trees. Rob said a local woodworker milled yellow box on the farm and worked it into bedboards and other wooden furnishings in the six cottages.

Rain fails to dampen expo crowd By JODIE FLEMING A FEW drops of rain didn’t deter the crowds that attended Australia’s premier alternative farming expo at Seymour last month. With about 39,000 people passing through the turnstiles, Seymour Alternative Farming Expo organiser Colin Stray said some good rain overnight quelled the dust to make conditions “more comfortable” than what expo visitors usually experience.
“It was an absolutely successful expo,” Mr Stray said. “Times are tough out there, but the surprising part was that the machinery-type businesses reported fantastic sales. “The food vendors sold out and people really enjoyed a stroll around while they were entertained and many learnt something new,” he said. According to Mr Stray the lecture series was very well received despite the change of location from previous years and all
were fully booked. “One guy I spoke to said that with the five or six lectures he attended that he was so full of knowledge he thought he would blow up,” laughed Mr Stray. The Farm Trail Competition was won by a Myrtleford couple who had recently purchased a 60 acre lifestyle property and who attended the expo to see what viable options they had for their land. “The Myrtleford winners actually attended two or three lectures and
had an armful of goodies going out the door, so we were thrilled they won because they are exactly the type of people we are targeting here at Seymour,” Mr Stray said. “Talking to people as they were going out the door they all had a beaut time, learnt something, were entertained and they were fed well,” Mr Stray said. “So that is our aim and we achieved it.” The Seymour Alternative Farming Expo will be held on February 14-15 next year.

Be prepared and save livestock MAJOR ďŹ re pump manufacturer Australian Pump Industries (Aussie Pumps) is emphasising the need for graziers and farmers to implement a ďŹ re-ready plan to ensure the safety of livestock. Aussie Pumps’ product manager Brad Farrugia said grass ďŹ res can advance at a terrifying pace, trapping livestock and catching farmers by surprise. “Too often, cattle, sheep, prize stud animals and their irreplaceable genetics are lost through lack of planning,â€? Mr Farrugia said. “We have developed the Aussie Fire Chief for applications like this.â€? The ‘big belly’ design and massive impeller gives ows of up to 450 litres per minute at pressure of up to 100 psi. The Fire Chief is powered by a genuine Honda petrol engine and comes standard with heavy duty steel skids and anti-vibration mounts. “Many farmers are changing over to the big Yanmar diesels because of the inherent ďŹ re safety, lower running costs and overall reliability,â€? Mr Farrugia said.
$XVVLH 3XPSV RIIHUV DGYLFH DQG HTXLSPHQW RQ IDUP Âż UH UHDG\ SODQV The following are guidelines for livestock protection that have been developed by Aussie Pumps in conjunction with government departments and ďŹ re authorities. Plan ahead: Implement a summer cropping plan. If possible, coordinate with neighbors to plant similar lush paddocks, like lucerne, to create a ďŹ rebreak. Identify safe havens: This area needs to be centrally located, easily accessible and strategically placed. Avoid adjoining timbered or brushy areas. There are several important factors to consider including: Grass type: A paddock containing green summer crops will offer good protection as it will not burn as readily as a paddock that had dry, long grass. The NSW Department of Primary Industries suggests keeping paddocks and laneways ‘chewed out’ and bare to reduce dry feed. Bear in mind that grass in higher areas, such as
PUMP PROTECTION: Maitland resident Tillie Angel has geared up with an Aussie Fire Chief to protect her family’s livestock.
ridges, will brown off quicker than in lower, moister areas. SufďŹ cient drinking water: Animals are susceptible to radiant heat, stress and dehydration.
Ensure there is sufďŹ cient drinking water, like a dam or stream to enable stock to remain in the area during periods of high to extreme temperatures. Fire-proof watering
systems: Poly delivery pipes should be buried. Keep tankers ďŹ lled up and ready to go. Keep adequate feed stores: Large numbers of livestock may need to be
kept in a safe haven for an extended period of time. Make sure you have adequate feed to ensure health and maintain condition. Maintain ďŹ re breaks: A low risk area needs at least a 20 metre wide cleared or ploughed perimeter. Consider co-operating with neighbors for longer, more effective ďŹ re breaks. Ensure that the area is clear of fuel, that is leaves, bark, branches. Accessibility: On ďŹ re danger days plan to carry out tasks that can be done close to the house and vehicles. Make sure tracks are maintained and accessible. Ensure any cattle grids and bridges can take the weight of a ďŹ re truck. If you have planted dense strands of trees make sure there is access either through or around them. Speed is of the essence. Under some circumstances it may be necessary to move stock early on high ďŹ re danger days. Make your plans well ahead and let everyone know what they are
responsible for. You may need to herd your stock closer together towards a dam or other water source. Minimise risk: Keep farm machinery like tractors, slashers and harvesters well maintained. Mechanical defects can cause sparks. Machinery should be kept clean and free from grease build up. A steam cleaner, like the Aussie Super Indy, is invaluable as it melts grease and muck. Machinery and vehicles should be equipped with a ďŹ re extinguisher. If possible, turn off electric fences. Do not weld or grind on danger days. SufďŹ cient ďŹ re ďŹ ghting equipment: Be prepared to put out spot ďŹ res and wet down danger areas. A trailer or ute-mounted ďŹ re pump and tank will provide a mobile option. Make sure the pump is capable of delivering sufďŹ cient water. For more information, including a free ‘Fire Ready Survival Plan’ visit www. aussiepumps.com.au.

Guildford merino stud adds Merryville blood By DAVID RIZZOLI
NEW BLOOD: Stuart, William and Stephen Glen are pictured with their new top ram from Merryville, NSW.
THE purchase of a new Merryville ram for $5000 marked a new chapter in the history of the Glen Brothers’ Wattlebank merino stud, Guildford. The Glens bought the 18 micron ram from the Grand Monarch family at Merryville, Yass, NSW, at the Canberra Great Southern Supreme Merino Ram Sale along with 18.9 micron Merryville Supreme. Wa t t l e b a n k M e r i n o S t u d (Flock no.MV3118) was founded in 1962 by RA Glen and Sons with the purchase of one ram and 60 ewes from Chatsworth House (Flock no 2734). Further Chatsworth House
rams were introduced in 1964, 1967-8 and 1970 and also a ram from Warrambeen (flock 1709). A further purchase of ewes from that stud was made in 1965 and from Warrambeen in 1968 and 1974. They introduced Merryville blood in 1970 with the purchase of one ram and it has been the only bloodline used since that date. One ram each was purchased from the Merryville blood studs Montrose Hill (2007), Demondrille and Merringee (2009). About 400 more Merryville ewes were introduced between 2000 and 2009. Since its establishment the stud has undergone a number of
variations to its ownership, but always within the family. In 1975 RMS Glen purchased a half share in the partnership and together with his wife traded as RMS and D Glen. In 1988 RMS and D Glen and their three sons, SM, SA and IA Glen joined in partnership trading as R, D, S, S and I Glen to be changed again to Glen Brothers Pty Ltd from July 1 2008. In 2012 the total ewe flock numbered 350 with 230 ewes mated producing 70 ram lambs and 80 ewe lambs. Blue brings rainbow for South Gippsland cheese THERE is a new big cheese in town with Berrys Creek Gourmet Cheese taking out the champion cheese of show at Sydney’s Royal Easter Cheese and Dairy Produce Show. Barry and Cheryl Charlton from Victoria’s South Gippsland region took out the coveted championship trophy for their blue goat milk cheese. The cheese-making duo had
a hugely successful show, also taking home the Australian cheeseboard perpetual trophy for their ‘Mossvale blue’ and champion sheep, goat and buffalo milk product for their blue goat’s milk cheese, ‘Charlton’s choice’. Chairman of judges, Russell Smith, was delighted with the high standard of entries across the competition, with
23 trophies, 123 gold medals and 422 silver medals awarded over four days of judging in mid February. The main Royal Easter Show occupies most of the second half of April this year. “We awarded 36 more gold and 82 more silver medals this year than last, with around 60 per cent of exhibitors receiving a medal,” Mr Smith said.
“The quality across the non-bovine cheese classes was outstanding so it came as no surprise that the champion cheese went to a blue goat’s cheese made by Barry Charlton; when it comes to quality, he is the most consistent blue cheese maker in Australia. “Other highlights this year included our first labneh
class, with three gold medals awarded from 11 entries. “Labneh is a strained yoghurt with a cheese-like consistency and we introduced this class to reflect the growing consumer interest in this emerging cheese.” Five cheeses were selected for the highly coveted Australian Cheeseboard Perpetual Trophy, giving cheese afi-
cionados a one stop shop for the ultimate cheese board selection. These included: s Berrys Creek Gourmet Cheese – Mossvale Blue; s Meredith Dairy Pty Ltd – Fresh Chevre, and; s Lion Dairy & Drinks (Burnie) – Heidi Farm Tilsit.

a large range of products and services, particularly farm machinery and dairy equipment, and has always been a preferred venue for exhibitors to launch new products, said Lardner Park chief executive Mark Cockerell. “Exhibitors ďŹ nd it to be an essential venue to highlight changes in technology, and to maintain and establish new contacts,â€? Mr Cockerell said. Victorian Deputy Premier Peter Ryan will ofďŹ cially open the ďŹ eld days and will also launch Gippsland’s ‘Food Plan’. The plan sets out initiatives to help Gippsland agribusinesses to take advantage of growing farm produce export opportunities. The presence of about 700 exhibitors using Farm World to promote products and services guarantees an extensive range to suit every interest. Mr Cockerell said a distinctive feature of Farm World was the extensive demonstration program on individual exhibitor
sites and on the Commonwealth Bank demonstration area and the Lardner Park Exhibition Centre. “Tractors, utility vehicles and forage harvesters will be put through their paces at the Commonwealth Bank demonstration area,â€? Mr Cockerell said. “Demonstrations on sites include a robotic milking machine, an all terrain excavator, a portable sawmill, an electric remote-control hose reel and plasma metal cutting machines.â€? There will be working draught horse demonstrations, chainsaw carving, Australian Travelling Fishing Show, whip cracking and a comedy show by the Crack-up Sisters each day in the BP Ultimate pavilion. A highlight each year is the Farm World tractor and machinery awards, which acknowledge signiďŹ cant developments in farm machinery in two classes: best powered machine and best unpowered machine. With 4.5mm pipe bends and 2mm Straight pipe a new G.E. Wasted feed and labour trying to free blockages is the small cost compared to your heard becoming sick from mouldy feed. Small holes and leaks can be fixed with silicon and small patches. For a long term solution a new G.E. Silo will keep your feed in perfect condition. 3. “I’m always running out of feed and it is expensive” Small silos seemed like a good idea at the time as they were cheaper. The problem with small silos is there is less time between getting low on feed and running out. Small loads of feed are much higher priced than larger loads. To save on bulk loads and never run out of feed again invest in a G.E. Silo with as many sight glasses as you need so you pay the right price for feed and you know how much feed you have. 4. “How much rust is too much on a silo” Surface rust is generally not a problem if it is treated and re-painted. If there are holes in legs, cones and walls of a silo then it becomes a lot more serious. This can be extremely dangerous. If one leg fails the whole silo will fail and this is potentially deadly. Don’t take the risk and replace the silo with a G.E. Silo which is constructed using only the highest quality Australian made products manufactured to last.

Free fuel for field HUGE SUMMER SALE day Renault buyers
Water Tanks, Water Carters, Fire Fighting Pumps & Transfer Pumps
ANYONE who buys a Renault from Barry Bourke Renault at Farm World will enjoy a bonus of $1000 worth of free fuel. The Berwick-based team led by sales manager Ian Baird, will welcome visitors with a large array of the famous carmaker’s passenger and sports cars and a full range of light commercial vehicles. Barry Bourke Motors GM Shaun Donaldson, said the company’s long Gippsland heritage - it has been 26 years at Berwick - means its staff understand the needs of rural customers and is keen to introduce show visitors to the delights of the modern Renault family. The company will have a full complement of light commercial vehicles on site including the compact Kangoo, mid-size Trafic and full-size Master vans, including the latest Master cab/chassis versions in three-seater single cab and seven-seater dual cab guise. Mr Donaldson said the Master cab/ chassis is ideally suited to rural environments, with its rear-wheel drive (and differential lock on some models), its 2.5t payload, 3t towing capacity and a choice of manual or automated gear-changing. “Best of all, these hardy workhorses can be driven on a regular driver’s licence. “Cab/chassis versions can be configured to carry refrigerated produce or bulk supplies of sand or gravel, animal feed, fencing supplies or work tools,” Mr Donaldson said. He said staff would be happy to explain Renault’s great heritage and its enduring popularity in Europe.
“Many people know Renault for its Formula 1 and motorsport heritage, but it is very strong in working vehicles too and its LCVs - the biggest-selling van brand in Europe for 16 years straight have a three-year or 200,000km factory warranty. “We pride ourselves on being exceptionally customer-centric; it is one of the values that has made our 26 years in Berwick so successful,” Mr Donaldson said. The company will also show the full range of Renault cars from the chic Clio, to the accomplished Mégane and the high performance Renault sport variants. “Renault is on a very determined and successful growth path in Australia, with sales up 40 per cent last year, underlining the appeal and value the cars and vans provide,” he said. For information go to www.barrybourkerenault.com.au, or call Ian Baird on 0422 751 043.

BUCHANAN Park Nicole, a three year old natural poll Welsh Black female with seven month old heifer calf at foot, took out the ultimate prize of supreme exhibit from 400 head of cattle exhibited from 28 beef breeds and three states at the National Beef Bendigo event last year. But her next showing will be a noncompetitive one on Buchanan Park’s stand at Farm World this month. At Bendigo Nicole was first awarded interbreed senior champion cow from 24 other beef females,
before she was crowned supreme exhibit with the three judges unanimous in awarding her the top prize. Buchanan Park also took out the interbreed best group of three from 22 other beef breeds. Stud principal Jill Furborough said it was a fantastic achievement for the stud and the Welsh Black breed. “Three of our winning exhibits paraded at Bendigo last year were sired by Buchanan Park Jackson, Mrs Furborough said. “He was awarded interbreed junior champion bull at National
Beef Bendigo in 2008. Nicole was described as a standout, “oozing quality and femininity, with a lovely udder and a good calf behind. Mrs Furborough said the win had been a very rewarding achievement for her family’s dedication to the Welsh Black breed. “We have concentrated our breeding program to improve the structure, soundness, conformation and temperament of our animals and over the 12 years we have successfully achieved these aims.

THE Quadra-Fire range of wood fires by Jetmaster, recently released in Australia, will be on show at Farm World. The company says that its six models – the 2100, 3100 and 4300 Millenium and the 3100 and 5700 Step Top – boast unmatched efficiency and technology. For example the 5700 will operate for up to 21 hours from a single load of wood. An automatic air control feature provides all the extra air to start the burning process. It then turns the stove down to the desired burn rate. The range has been tested and approved to Australian Emission and Thermal Standard AS/NZ 4012/13 and clearance standard AS/NZ 2918. system burns the smoke just like fuel in four distinct zones of the combustion chamber. In each, potential heat that would normally escape up the chimney is captured. The bottom line is cleaner air. There is also less flue maintenance and fewer trips to the woodpile. Heating capacity is up to nine square metres for the 5700 while maximum efficiency is 84 per cent. Average emissions range from 1.6g/ kg to 2.9g/kg. More information is available from: Jetmaster Heat & Glo, 444 Swan Street, Richmond. But over the last two years, the ATV Lifeguard (pictured left) has proved one of the most advanced, flexible and compact crush protection devices. “In an overturn the weight of the ATV is transferred down the pillars of the Lifeguard, reducing the risk of serious injury or death as it allows the rider to escape being trapped,â€? Mr Tiplady said. The device is flexible so it will give when passing under low branches .
Brushcutter nylon eliminates breaks WITH heavy rainfall over the summer, grass and weeds are growing at rates not seen during the recent years of drought. If the time has come to dust off the brushcutter, but you are dreading the thought of doing battle with the nylon cord, the Weedwakka may be the answer says Weedwakka principal David Thorne. For many years now, he and his father’s small engineering company near Canberra has been developing and making
the cutting attachment that ďŹ ts onto straight shaft brushcutters. “The Weedwakka eliminates the frustration that many people experience when using nylon cord and conventional steel blades,â€? Mr Thorne said. The MultiCut Weedwakka has exible nylon blades that cut cleanly through much heavier vegetation than nylon cords will handle. The blades are clearly visible when rotating and can be used around trees
without damaging bark. He said the MultiCut is ideal for cutting along paths, walls and netting fences, as it eliminates the constant breakage and rapid wear common to nylon cord. “When the blades are worn, they can be replaced in seconds without the use of tools. For heavier vegetation such as blackberries the heavy duty Weedwakka is the perfect tool. “The hardened steel blades will cut anything
from grass to thumb thickness woody weeds, and never require sharpening. “If the blades strike a rock they are able to deect, greatly reducing kick back, and minimising stress on the brushcutter. “This makes it ideal for clearing scrub in rocky country,â€? Mr Thorne said. Both Weedwakka models cost $55, and are available from site 218 to 219 at Farm World. More information: (02) 6236 8218, www.weedwakka.com.au.

ATV and quad bike safety issues will be one of the greatest talking points regarding farm safety in 2014, with more than 28 per cent of work-related farm deaths related to ATVs according to Matthew Tiplady of ATV Lifeguard, Berwick. “Further figures are even more alarming with 850 people injured and over 120 people killed due to ATV use throughout Australia and New Zealand in recent years, he said.

DAMAGE and economic losses are commonplace for producers facing a kangaroo problem, but a strong fence has taken grapes and vines off the menu for Seymour ‘roos. Fencing contractor David Cornthwaite said kangaroos were causing headaches across central Victoria, including for one of his clients who owns a local vineyard. “Kangaroos developed a taste for their vines and fruit and were doing hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage a year,” he said. “They wanted to install fences that would keep out the ‘roos and minimise
their losses.” Mr Cornthwaite worked with the owners to come up with a solution that would be effective and also fast to erect. “We put in a 1.8m high fence using 240cm JIO® MaxY and JIO Star posts with Stocksafe-T wire. “This combination was quicker than usual to assemble and we did 350m of fencing in a day and a half. “It’s only been up a few months, but the owners are yet to see a kangaroo in their vineyard.” Mr Cornthwaite said the success of this fence design was attracting interest from other landholders, given how much
kangaroos are a persistent and increasing problem across the region. “It’s a great result and I think it will be useful not just for other vineyards, but also on other properties facing destruction from the kangaroo population,” he said. “Cheaper materials just don’t stand up to kangaroos determined to get to your crops and get themselves a fancy feed. “The damage kangaroos do means the investment in a strong, well-designed fence is worth it.” Waratah sales representative Wayne Weston said kangaroos were a reg-
ular topic of conversation for Victorian producers. “At last year’s Elmore Field Days, every second inquiry we had was from people looking for solutions to stop ‘roos,” he said. “They need to be at least 1.5m tall, but ideally 1.8m and made from quality products that withstand their efforts. “The height and type of fence and the wire spacings are all important. “Waratah has designed Stocksafe-T to specifically prevent animals penetrating the fence. “This makes it an effective barrier for pest animals like kangaroos.”

WATER where it’s needed, when it’s needed is every farmer’s dream. So with drought conditions continuing across eastern Australia, reliable, fuel efficient water transfer pumps are essential. Offering flows of up to 1800lpm and heads of up to 28m Australian Pump Industries’ 100mm QP402 high volume water mover has proven itself the farmers’ drought buster. The pumps will self-prime from an 8.4m direct lift, enabling suction from dams, wells and creeks. On-farm tests have demonstrated the pump priming from a 3m lift in less than 30 seconds. In its base configuration, the QP402 comes with a heavy duty cast iron impeller and volute.

ad smells coming from your septic system are a good indicator that something is not right. Not only are smells unpleasant and embarrassing, but they could be a clear sign that things are soon going to get worse. Your septic system is the digestive system in your back yard. It relies on naturally occurring, good bacteria to break down all the waste and grease that you flush away. The wrong type of bacteria or too few good bacteria in your system, leads to smells, clogged drains, overflowing septics and blocked absorption trenches. Families have been relying on Australian made Ecocare Activator for years. This Quality Assured product will clean, clear and condition everything from kitchen
Healthy eating advice for your septic system. sinks to drains, relegating smells and blockages to the history books. “I have been using your product for over a decade. During that period I have had no occasion to use the services of a plumber. Drains run freely, never is there an offensive odour and the septic system works perfectly,” commented V. Wright from New South Wales. One product – multiple uses. But it doesn’t stop with what you can see. As you flush it down the drain it continues to work unseen within the confines of your septic system. Restoring the natural balance of good bacteria and keeping smells and blockages away naturally.

n unpleasant smell is often the first sign that you have a problem with your septic system. But once the smell is there, the problem is already in place. Ecocare Activator, trusted for decades by families across Australia, is your one-stop solution to septic system woes. Ken and Glenise Outch, from Victoria, have been using Ecocare Activator for many years. This is what they had to say, “The product itself is fantastic. We use it around the house for all the cleaning and in turn it is constantly keeping our bacterial level in the septic system at optimal levels. It is also removing the need to use any harmful chemical cleaners which can kill off the system. “Thank you again for your product and the great service you provide…we always know you are only a free phone call away!” Used as an all over cleaner for the house, it is then simply flushed down
the drain or toilet where it continues to work within your pipes to clear blockages and condition your system. No need for expensive maintenance, no need to call out the plumber (and certainly no need to replace the system!).
ever used…The best product and the only one in my house for cleaning!” said Debbie Godfry from Queensland. “I purchased Activator as I had a problem with odour; a build up of fats; blockages in my seepage drains and wetness at the surface of my trench.
…it is keeping our costs low by saving on regular pump outs and having to get a plumber out to remove blockages and/or replace the system…we also don’t have the cupboard full of all different types of cleaners. Thank you again…” (Ken and Glenise Outch, Victoria) “We use it in the drains (toilet, shower, spa etc) and it has been great. I have even used it on my stainless steel oven, stove, sinks, benches, laminated benches and they have come up cleaner than any other product I have
Healthy, happy and odour free in 3 easy steps Ecocare Activator is the one product you can rely on to cut your cleaning time down to the bare minimum and keep your house, septic system and Aerated Wastewater Treatment System (AWTS) clean and healthy. “I have recommended Ecocare Activator regularly and have seen even the most neglected system turned around… within as little as one month,” said Senior Service Technician Michael Goddard from Wastewater Consultants Pty Ltd. Use to clean all hard surfaces and kill odours on contact, then simply rinse your surfaces and pour any remaining mixture straight down the drain. As it moves into your septic system it continues working, clearing blockages and conditioning your system. You do the first part, leave it to do the rest.
Expert advice that won’t leave you stranded Competent, experienced and highly knowledgeable in our field of expertise, we are also friendly and down-toearth and here to make your life easier. Ecocare Activator will solve your wastewater problems and prevent them coming back. Read what Michelle Lavinge from Victoria had to say about our service:
“I had been told by 3 plumbers there was nothing they could do to help me with the terrible odour…Your team worked with me over several months to clean out the waste through the various areas of the house… Thank you for all the times you called me to check and confirm how our problem was going – I didn’t have to call you. Fantastic work – it’s rare to see such great customer service when things get tough. “I would like to thank you for the friendly service, after sales support and excellent result I have received from your company and product Ecocare Activator. Our extremely unpleasant experience with this terrible odour from the drains and septic is now over and we couldn’t be more relieved.”

Heat knocks Beef Week roll-up Gusty winds and 40-plus temperatures force stock and buyers to seek the shade By DAVID RIZZOLI THE late Noel Coward once sang “Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun”. Add in dedicated cattlemen and newspaper contributors who should know better and you have Beef Week 2014. This year days five and six covered Southern Farmer’s region with a small
number of studs on the eastern edge of day eight. For 2014 it was the turn of that part of the region to the west of Melbourne to be visited by this newspaper. The weather forecast for day six, Sunday, February 2, was not promising – temperatures to 40 plus degrees and gusty winds. So, it was with an Esky full of ice and cold drinks,

that Southern Farmer set off to visit the first of the studs for the day, Phillip Gay’s Heatherington Park Poll Herefords at Kingston, some 25km north of Ballarat. The cattle were already seeking the shade as Phillip displayed his crop of rising two years old bulls which included the first sons of the new sire Allendale Robin Hood. The condition of the animals, as with all the studs visited was excellent, reflecting the good seasons experienced in south-eastern Australia A few kilometres to the east was McKay Brothers’ Marschay Shorthorns. Founded in 1975 this stud runs 350 cows, 70 of which are registered. It won junior champion heifer at the 2013 Royal Melbourne Show with Marschay Christine. David McKay, who is a former chairman of Beef Week, together with Scott McKay also farms potatoes and canola on rich volcanic soil. Mr McKay reported a good roll-up of visitors (some with cheque books) and it was still early in the day. About four km north is

the Tippett family’s Glengyron Shorthorns. This stud, which has enjoyed success showing at Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney and Geelong Royal Shows, had its new sires Glengyron High Power and Outback Sprys Covert G292 on display, as well as their team for the RAS Heifer Challenge. A selection of red, white and roan bulls was for sale. The grand hilltop retreat of the Mobbs family’s High Spa Angus Stud at Daylesford was the next port-of-call with Theresa Mobbs doing the meeting and greeting while Brian, Wayne and Kevin presented a large selection of bulls and females for the many buyers present. All the yearlings and bulls of working age had been performance recorded and the highlights of the day were the PTIC heifers and mixed age cows carrying quality and proven performance recorded genetics. A long trip then to Lancefield and Jeff Smith’s Andtravern Herefords established in 1997. Southern Farmer was shown the animals by daughter Erin, who plays a large role in the running of the stud, care being taken not to disturb the cows
resting in the shade. Andtravern’s current herd sire, Glendan Park Fire Power was on display along with his progeny as was a broad selection of the stud’s herd. Heading west the next stud to be visited was the Boonderoo South Devon stud of Hilary Jankelson at Redesdale. At this stage it was obvious that the heat was affecting attendances and studs were reporting a drop-off in the number of visitors. The stud’s cows and calves, a number of which were for sale, were on display. Next was the grand entrance and sweeping bitumen drive of Alvio Trovatello’s Glendan Park Herefords and Poll Herefords and Kyneton Olives at Barfold. Established in 1989 it currently runs 180 breeders with the Poll Herefords being introduced in 2004. On display were the 35 bulls to be offered at the stud’s first on-property bull sale on February 21(in conjunction with Adameluca Angus). It was getting late in the day when Southern Farmer called in to John Harvey’s Torr Down South Devons at Trentham, too late to view the cattle as John had returned them
to their paddocks and shady trees. Torr Down has been breeding South Devons for 46 years and has exported cattle and semen worldwide. Awarded the supreme best tasting beef accolade in Australia in 1999, Torr Down bulls sired the grand champion carcases at the 2011 Adelaide and 2012 and 2013 Royal Melbourne shows. Last visit for day 6 was James O’Brien’s Bonian Limousin stud. James and his helpers were enjoying a quiet drink before returning show animals to their paddocks. The stud did not have animals for sale but had on display the sale team of 14 bulls and females to be offered at the Great Southern Limousin sale at Hamilton on February 17. Day eight, Tuesday February 4, was forecast to be somewhat cooler, although it was still to be hot. With only three studs to visit it promised to be a more leisurely day. First stud was Charles Weatherly’s David’s Angus Stud, Skipton. This was the stud’s first venture into Beef Week and on display were sons
of Novak E313 and Emperor E343, together with stud and sale bulls and stud and sale cows, steers, heifers and other cows. Dav i d ’s An g u s i s managed by former Poll Hereford stud breeder Tim Fincham who was showing South Australian visitors, Jock Hislop of Naracoorte and a stud master well known to Southern Farmer readers, Damien Gommers of Mandayen Limousin’s at Keith, SA. The stud was established to supply breeding stock for the large commercial enterprise running over 500 cows The McEachern family’s Ardno Hereford and Poll Hereford Stud, Wingeel, is well known to readers of this newspaper. One of the oldest Hereford studs in Australia, Ardno was founded in 1937 and joins 230 breeders each year. Ardno was one of the top 10 finalists in the 2013 RAS Heifer Challenge and the stud’s entry in the 2014 Challenge was on display with 45 Hereford and 10 Poll Hereford bulls to be offered in the 55th onproperty sale on March 12. EDR Toranmoor Gold, a Wodonga champion, was also on display.

It will provide easyto-understand information about the local groundwater cycle, the aquifers of the region, how groundwater is used, and how it is managed in the area. Couch potato to metabolic marathon WE’VE stretched the transition definition from dry-off to pregnancy – the rest of the cow’s year is simply maintenance and milking. I prophesise that this timeframe will determine prosperity or insolvency in the next few years. The violence of dairying economics will take out many based on national production figures unless diligent uptake of good dairy science, now well proven and expanding, is not widespread. All the following issues have proportionate negative implications on both milk production and fertility – the two drivers of dairy profit. This timeframe is when cows are most vulnerable. Immune dysfunction (rather than suppression, as new research is showing) creates this vulnerability. Milk fever is perhaps our first discussion point, simply because it is usually the first visible sign and problem from inadequate lead feeding. We have tools now to address this and ketosis. Checking urine pH of springing cows is essential to know the transition ration is right for DCAD. Testing feeds and calcu-
Dry-off-to-pregnancy time will determine prosperity or bust in coming years lating lead feed DCAD is costly, time consuming and usually too late when information becomes available. Urine pH of 6.2 to 6.8 for Holsteins and 5.8 to 6.2 for Jerseys, simply requires adjusting the quantity of the lead feed grain mix. Research has highlighted that balancing forages for low DCAD may prevent clinical milk fever, but without anionic salts it is likely 30 to 50 per cent of the herd will have subclinical milk fever. The cost at $125 for treating a case of sub-clinical milk fever, plus the risk of metabolic disease losses and even fertility/culling, can have a significant impact on profits. Assuring springer cows are consuming 125 MJME (energy) at 15 per cent crude protein and 40 percent NDF (fibre) will have major impacts on reducing ketosis through minimising negative energy balance both during the springer phase and in post-calving feed intakes. We are finding more displaced abomasums are connected now to ketosis than to blood calcium. Further, the dry period is often where ketosis starts
By JOHN LYNE Dairytech dairy production specialist due to negative energy balance and mobilisation of body fat while dry. Weight gain during the dry spell will reduce postcalving feed intake and also produce ketosis. Only a balanced ration based on feeds available and fortified with grain if found deficient, can stabilise weight during the dry phase. We strongly recommend checking cows’ milk at day three post-calving with Keto-Test-Strips and treat with propylene glycol if necessary. This is simple and can be followed with a BHBA blood test if the problem is widespread. Sub-clinical ketosis cows that are undetected and hence untreated are 1.6 times more likely to get a DA and twice as likely to be involuntary culls within 30 days of calving.
Cows treated with propylene glycol (300 ml) are 1.5 times more likely to resolve their sub-clinical ketosis and 50 per cent less likely to develop clinical ketosis, plus produce 0.7L more milk per day in the first 30 days-in-milk. This has ramifications to total lactation performance and profit. I am looking more at dry cow nutrition now as the probable source of metabolic disease at and around calving, than actual lead feeding. We seem to be getting that fairly right, but still have some lingering problems post-calving. I hasten to add, dry cow nutrition has been studying mineral nutrition as a major part of dry cow diets. There is a growing body of research data now linking the lack of mineral nutrition in this phase to both post-calving disease and milk production. I’m more in favor of an actual designed dry cow ration rather than “outblock nutrition, even when good pasture is available. Controlling this diet and especially feeding some dairy grain with a good mineral inclusion, is look-
ing essential for the kind of performance our herds must all rise to. Research has now demonstrated improved performance for cows on transition diets for six weeks and longer. This has brought about a change of eliminating the dry cow phase, and with accurate calving date information, cows are going from the milking herd straight into the springer group on a transition diet. The key issue here is accurate calving dates. As mentioned above, immune dysfunction is now being seen as more the issue than suppression. It was assumed suppression, as a result of metabolic disease, was the cause of many bacterial diseases such as metritis and mastitis. Current research has produced a deeper understanding and relationship of dysfunction to poor immunity and the cow’s capacity to cope with infection as a result of incorrect or overreactive signalling of blood cells. Inflammation within the cow’s body can distort the immune signalling, creating
over-responses and inciting other health issues. Life wasn’t meant to be easy as our former federal MP and PM said. A cow that stumbles at calving, or worse, has subclinical milk fever/ketosis and inherently induced bacterial diseases, has Buckley’s chance of getting back in calf in a timely manner. As cited in January’s article, ‘days open’ is directly related to profitable dairy production. Cows are far more efficient at converting feed dollars to milk dollars in early lactation; the percentage of the herd in that category determines your profit. Perhaps in summary and relief, the old adage “prevention is better than cure appears to be of greater significance than we ever thought. Nutrition is the key factor in prevention. Just keeping cows alive and standing no longer supports comfortable retirement plans. John Lyne is a dairy production specialist with Dairytech Nutrition. Lucerne the top farm perennial
By FRANK MICKAN LUCERNE (Medicago sativa) is the most widely grown perennial pasture legume in Australia. It will persist if strict management practices are adhered to. It is also well understood to maintain longterm productive lucerne pastures, some form of rotational grazing is required. A minimum spell period from grazing of around 35 days and short grazing periods are recommended. These practices should provide a reasonable balance between persistence, quality, yield and animal safety. Nevertheless, many farmers find ideal grazing management techniques
impracticable and too hard to sustain under tough seasonal conditions. There are a number of factors that contribute to the low rate of adoption of ideal grazing rotations. Paddocks are often too large and there are high costs associated with sub-dividing and implementing stock watering systems in broad acre pasture operations. Additional management skills are required and perhaps there is a poor understanding of the benefits of rotational grazing. One of the greatest obstacles to adoption is that over a long, dry summer, when the only green feed on the farm is lucerne, farmers will leave their stock on it for extended periods despite the con-
sequences. The adverse effects of continuous grazing on lucerne and set stocking with high stocking rates under dry conditions will most likely result in a rapid decline in persistence. There is a strong relationship between winter dormancy and grazing tolerance but there are also a number of other traits that contribute to differences in lucerne persistence. Grazing tolerance in lucerne has been linked to deep set crowns, the plant growing along the ground, broad crowns, prolific and extended periods of budding, maintenance of leaf area under grazing and maintenance of root carbohydrates. Grazing-tolerant lucerne varieties undergo

extensive screening combining elite breeding lines and successful commercial cultivars. Differences between the grazing-tolerant and the non-grazing types have become apparent.

/REE\ ZDQWV WR NHHS FDWWOH IURP ULYHUV E N V I RO N M E N T Victoria claims that 4500 tonnes of cow poo lands in Victoria’s rivers every day, based on data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Department of Health, Environment Victoria’s Mark Wakeham said “walking, belching, 700-kilogram hoofed ungulates devastate the rich ecosystems by trampling the banks and pooing in the rivers, killing native vegetation, causing erosion and muddying the watersâ€?. He said shutting out “maraudingâ€? cows was the ďŹ rst and easiest step
toward protection and restoration of precious rivers. “But it’s not the only solution; Victoria’s rivers are also facing increasing problems of over-extraction of water and a drying climate, he said. To publicise the state of the 30 river catchments, Environment Victoria has just launched on its website, environmentvictoria. org.au, a new interactive web atlas called ‘Our Rivers, Our Lifeblood’. It charts the health, major features and natural values of all 30 of Vic-
toria’s river catchments in one user-friendly atlas. Mr Wakeham said the story that flows through ‘Our Rivers, Our Lifeblood’ is clear: they are the lifeblood of our landscape, we can’t exist without them and they need our help. To that end EV is inviting website visitors to sign a petition to tell the government to fence off these areas and let the rivers restore to their natural state . The only very poorrated river catchment is the Hopkins in the Western District.

Drinking water well worth test 0DU\VYLOOH VDPSOH IRXQG WR EH FRUURVLYH
A WATER sample Coolabah Water’s Bernard Neylan collected from a visitor to the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo in February, proved the advisability of having drinking water tested. Sourced from a shallow well near Marysville, the visitor was using it in his bath, too, and it was staining it and the ďŹ xtures blue/green. Mr Neylan performed an on-site analysis of the water and then ran a computer formula saturation model on what turned out to be very soft water with a pH of 6.9. The result of the test was that this water was extremely corrosive.
It was corroding the copper pipes in his house – it killed snails in the garden too – and he had stomach, kidney and liver ailments, sore joints and psoriasis. The water source remedy was to treat all his water simply by making it alkaline with a device designed and made by Coolabah Water. Mr Neylan said that this example highlighted the importance of having proper testing done on drinking water. “Most of the time we either guess or just say to ourselves ‘my water TASTES /+ v HE SAID “But what might the long term
damage be to our bodies be if we just guess?â€? To ďŹ nd out more, Coolabah Water has uploaded on its web site home page, an e-book titled Healthy Water. The e-book is the result of many years research by Martin Fox, PhD, drawing on more than 60 research papers. For those going to Farm World at Lardner Park, Warragul, from March 27 to 30, Mr Neylan suggests bringing a sample of their water to site 43 in New Street for testing. This withholding period will overcome any palatability or
fouling issues, reduce the risk of any pathogens and allow plants time to respond to the nutrients. For direct application of sludge to pasture, herds may need to be excluded for up to eight weeks, because of the solids content. For liquid efuent, the total NITROGEN . APPLICATION SHOULD be no more than 60 to 80kg/ha. However sludge applicatio rates can be much higher due to the slow release nature of much of the organic N in sludge. Heavier applications increase the risk of problems such as nitrate poisoning, mineral im-

Communities line-up for groundwater atlas SOUTHERN Rural Water is giving communities in the Port Phillip and Westernport region, including environmental and other interested groups, a chance to learn more about groundwater and road-test a draft groundwater atlas. The Port Phillip and Westernport atlas will provide easy-to-understand information about the local groundwater cycle, the aquifers of the region, how groundwater
is used, and how it is managed in the area. The draft makes use of new mapping technology to present information in a way that has never been seen before in the region. Southern Rural Water will hold free workshops starting from March 11 at locations including Rosebud, Pakenham, Lilydale, Lancefield, Bacchus Marsh and Werribee. Not only will participants get a chance to
use the draft atlas and provide feedback, but they will also be able to register to receive their own copy of the atlas once it is complete. “We have developed the draft atlas in consultation with a whole range of different people and groups in the region who are interested in groundwater, said groundwater and rivers’ general manager Craig Parker. “It’s easy to read, and it gives everyone a good
understanding of the state of groundwater and its use in the region. “We are keen to roadtest the draft atlas with people from the region interested in groundwater, and get their feedback. Mr Parker said that Southern Rural Water would also like to hear about users’ current and future management issues. For more information contact Southern Rural Water on 1300 139 510.
