Phylloxera outbreak confirmed

5km quarantine zone established at St Andrews in the Yarra Valley Ű

A FIVE kilometre quarantine zone has been established around St Andrews after Phylloxera was detected at a commercial winery. Vinehealth Australia, and Australian Grape and Wine, have advised the mites have been found in a Phylloxera Risk Zone in the Yarra Valley. The strain detected is G1; the same as that found in the Maroondah Phylloxera Infested Zone (PIZ). The quarantine zone around the vineyard abuts the north west boundary of the existing Maroondah PIZ. The name of the affected winery has not been released, but vignerons inside the quarantine, or near to it, are not troubled by the detection. Joel Trist from Buttermans Track Winery said vineyards

with Phylloxera could expect a gradual spreading of the mite across all vines. “Once it’s in your soil, you’ve got it,” he said. “The only way to get fruit every year it to replace the vines on American rootstock – at $5.50 a vine. “It can kill the vine eventually – if that happens, there is D PDVVLYH o QDQFLDO ULVN IRU XV – we would have to replace the whole vineyard.” Phylloxera is a soft bodied insect pest of grapevines, affecting Vitis species - commercial grapevines and ornamental vines. It is a major threat to the majority of Australia’s vineyards that are planted on own roots, which are highly susceptible to attack. American resistant root stock is available for grafting,

EXW DW o YH WLPHV WKH SULFH RI non-resistant stocks is a costly swap-out. Panton Hill Winery is currently outside the quarantine zone, but owner Dorothy Kwak said there was talk about changing the area. “We are fairly isolated,” she said. “It means it’s stricter, now that it’s been found closer – even though we have always been careful. “Grapes from affected areas can’t be sold outside the (quarantine) area. “The impact is less for those who make their own wine.” Mrs Kwak said the biggest Phylloxera risk came from workers who contracted on WKH YDOOH\ p RRU q WKH <DUUD 9DO ley, an area known to be PIZ Continued page 3

SIMON’S world was rocked a few years ago when he lost a family member to suicide. He says the loss plays on his mind every day, and opened his awareness to the important message regarding mental illness. “It’s okay to get help – just go and talk to someone, he said. “This is fair dinkum stuff. Simon coaches his son’s football team - this gives him another focus in his life other than just dairy farming, which can easily become all consuming. $W WKH ORFDO 2UERVW IRRWEDOO o HOG KH DQG KLV mates can chat and catch up and to Simon, this is his therapy from the hardships of solitary life on his farm in rural Victoria, a long way from Melbourne and from readily available resources regarding mental health. He calls Diane his best friend, and says she’s been the biggest support through the majority of his 23 years in farming. “She’s the brain, I’m the brawn – I couldn’t do without her, Simon said. z Anthrax confirmed A PROPERTY near Swan Hill has confirmed a case of Anthrax in sheep. The disease has been found on a property that has a history of Anthrax – at-risk stock on the property have been vaccinated. Agriculture Victoria is involved. z Drovers hit the road THE Moyne Shire will allow NSW farmers to ‘go droving’ in what has been called a win/ win situation. More than 350 head of cattle will be allowed to graze on roadsides within the shire. The cattle will be trucked in from NSW. The move will ease the pressure for drought stricken farmers from across the border, but will also provide a reduction in fuel loads for the shire. z Cattle prices slide THE benchmark Eastern Young Cattle Indicator has dropped to below 400 cents a kilo for the first time in four years. The EYCI has been retreating since drought conditions really took hold, most notably since the start of 2019. z Gippsland farmers left out FARMERS in Gippsland are furious at the Government’s apparent apathy towards their drought stricken situation. Just $5 million has been delivered in the latest rebates. The money must be shared between farmers across 22 shires – even those shires not in drought declared areas. z Bendigo Showgrounds plan upgrade THE Bendigo Showgrounds, home of the Australian Sheep and Wool Show, will benefit from a $50,000 planning development. A further $50,000 will be donated by community groups. The monies will be used to liaise with the community to come up with a plan for the future of the grounds. z Lamb update LAMB prices have decreased across the board, with the national slaughter rates down almost 10 per cent on the same time last year (mid March). The Victorian medium trade weight lamb OTH indicator was back 10¢ to 662¢ - the strongest state price - while SA eased 7¢ to 660¢/kg carcase weight (cwt). At the end of 2018 the closest state in terms of OTH price was SA, although medium trade weight lambs were still making a 64¢/kg cwt premium to their western neighbours.

Phylloxera outbreak confirmed Ŷ

CONFIRMED OUTBREAK: Phylloxera has been found at a commercial winery in St Andrews, triggering a five kilometre buffer zone. PHOTO: Ag Vic.

From page 1 “We mainly hire workers who don’t work on the valley floor, for that very reason,” she said. “A lot of people use contractors from overseas, who don’t have good English – so we have information in several languages across the property. “But you rely on people stepping into the footbaths, washing their tools, wearing clean clothing.” James Lance, from Punch Winery, said the biggest impact would be felt by those who did not manufacture their own wine – those that relied on selling grapes. “Grapes can’t be sold out of the area now,” he said. “It can create a lot of issues – and have a big impact on some businesses.” Punch has a cellar door in St Andrews – meaning

the chances of someone bringing Phylloxera onto the vineyard is almost nonexistent. “We are fortunate our cellar is not at the winery,” James said. “It’s also impossible to keep people from wandering into the vines when cellar doors are located on site.” Australian grape growing regions are delineated by phylloxera status into three management zones: z Phylloxera Exclusion Zones (PEZ) have been surveyed and found free or are declared free historically; z Phylloxera Risk Zones (PRZ) are of unknown status; and z Phylloxera Infested Zones (PIZ) contain vineyards known to be or have been infested. Agriculture Victoria and Wine Yarra Valley are working together to assess and manage the implications of

the detection, and whether the boundaries of the current Maroondah PIZ should be changed. Vinehealth Australia and Australian Grape and Wine will also continue to monitor the situation. “This latest phylloxera outbreak in Victoria is a concerning development,” Vinehealth Australia chief executive officer, Inca Pearce, said. “It highlights the critical role that industry must play in preventing further spread. “The outbreak is also clear evidence of the need for a new national management strategy for phylloxera, on which work has recently commenced – we need to do everything in our power to protect our vines and manage the risk.” Anyone with questions, queries or to report a Phylloxera finding should contact Ag Vic on 136 186.

Rain across region needed now

“IT’S dry as chips.” So said Elders stock and station agent Ryan Sergeant late last month. Mr Sergeant was repeating the phrase that farmers across the region are all too familiar with - because if there is one thing that’s needed right now, it’s rain. Most producers have already trimmed excess stock - sold empty and old cows and neatened herds - but

the majority are still left with enormous feed bills, regardless of their breeding plan. “Spring calves are feeding their weaned calves, autumn calves are feeding their lactating cows with calves at foot,” Mr Sergeant said. “Any surplus stock have been sold – basically, anything we do not need we are getting rid of. “We are struggling to keep

cattle in good positive forward condition.” As cattle prices continue to slide - last month, the famous Mountain Calf Sales saw a disappointing drop of up to $200 per head - Mr Sergeant said it was likely this would continue unless rain brought some reprieve. “We aren’t seeing people jumping in over each other to buy a pen – at those mountain sales or those blue-rib-

ERQ VDOHV \RX OO VHH o YH RU VL[ people bidding on a pen - at Omeo there might have been one or two,” he said. “The competition is just not there. “The feedlots are all full – lots have taken advantage of the cheaper cattle prices, and are now full up for the next 40 – 60 days. There are a large volume of QXPEHUV p RZLQJ WKURXJK WKH V\VWHP 9LFWRULD LV D OLWWOH o VK

in a big ocean; there is a large amount of cattle on the market in NSW and QLD which is driving a lot of our prices down in the southern part of the country.” Although different regions had different cut off days, Mr Sergeant said Anzac Day was the rule of thumb rain date. “The cold mornings are starting to creep in - If we start getting a few frosts, leading to April and May, with no

coverage on the ground, it could be devastating for our primary producers,” he said. “If we don’t get rain by Anzac Day we run into trouble ZH QHHG IRXU RU o YH PO IRU D week or two.” At the time of going to print, a big rain band had been predicted for Southern and North East Victoria late March. Without it, and decent follow up falls, the autumn break will not eventuate.

Growing white gold Grow better, not bigger is this fourth generation farmer’s advice Ű

is that it won’t all come unstuck at once. This season, for example, the challenge has been low rainfall. Normally a 1000ml zone, Gordon estimates much less was received last year. As a result, the paddocks are desperately looking for an autumn break. The potatoes, which are harvested from December to late June, also need rain. “The season has been incredibly dry, but that’s the way it goes, Gordon said. ,W V QRW WKH o UVW FKDOOHQJH faced at Jones Potatoes, nor will it be the last. Gordon is the fourth generation in his family to farm at Warragul – his grandfather started in dairy, his father moved into dairy and potatoes and Gordon KDV GLYHUVLo HG WR QRZ running the potatoes, along with around 130 crossbred

cows, with calves turned off at 10 months for the vealer market. In attempts to diversify, the family have trialled growing asparagus, sweet corn, beans, celery, pumpkin and canning peas. Potatoes, with the beef cattle as a secondary income, have proven the best mix. “To maintain soil health and crop quality, potatoes will be normally rotated with a pasture phase, with dairy or beef cattle – or even sheep – on the pasture, Gordon said. “It was trial and error, and some farmers have settled on different rotations. “But the rich red soil on our farm and climate in Warragul help us to grow very good potatoes; we’ve tried several other crops but potatoes are what we do best – I like to WKLQN , KDYH D QDWXUDO DIo QLW\ for growing them.

ood soil, good seed, good weather – and a lot of luck. That’s the perfect recipe for growing potatoes, according to Gordon Jones. And if anyone knows, it’s Gordon; a fourth generation farmer from Warragul, Gordon has found the secret to success is not to go bigger, but to grow better. Farming 400 acres of free draining red clay, the property is divided into several income streams: beef cattle and potatoes, which is IXUWKHU GLYHUVLo HG LQWR VHHG organic, and fresh potatoes. To manage this, they have grown better, rather than

expanding operations. “Many farms chase economy of scale to deal with marginal returns from the high volume outlets, but we chose to scale back our production and instead focus on those niche markets – fresh and organic, Gordon said. “With regards to farmers markets, there is a common misconception that buyers at farmers markets want to be sold a story, which is true for some – but the reality is price, and a good product, is what attracts people. “If we can offer a quality eating experience at a reasonable price, they are more likely to be a repeat customer. For a man born and bred on the family potato farm, Gordon is surprisingly perceptive about consumer trends. Ram sperm frozen for 50 years impregnates 34 ewes

OLDEST DADDY: Researchers recently used semen from Sir Freddie, pictured, that had been frozen for 50 years to impregnate ewes.

SEMEN stored since 1968 in a laboratory in Sydney has been defrosted and successfully used to impregnate 34 Merino ewes. “This demonstrates the clear viability of long-term frozen storage of semen - the results show that fertility is maintained despite 50 years of frozen storage in liquid nitrogen, Associate Professor Simon de Graaf from the Sydney Institute of Agriculture, and School of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Sydney said. “The lambs appear to display the body wrinkle that was common in Merinos in the middle of last century, a feature originally selected to maximise skin surface area and wool yields. “That style of Merino has since largely fallen from favour as the folds led to difficulties in shearing and increased risk of fly strike.

BY DR MARTIN AULDIST

Senior Research Scientist, Agriculture Victoria, Ellinbank

It is believed this is the oldest viable stored semen of any species in the world, and definitely the oldest sperm used to produce offspring. “We can now look at the genetic progress made by the wool industry over the past 50 years of selective breeding, he said. “In that time, we’ve been trying to make better, more productive sheep. “This gives us a resource to benchmark and compare.

Out of 56 ewes inseminated, 34 were successfully impregnated. This compares to recently frozen semen from 19 sires used to inseminate 1048 ewes, of which 618 were successfully impregnated. This gives a pregnancy rate of 61 per cent for the 50-year-old semen against 59 per cent for recently frozen sperm, a statistically equivalent rate. The original semen samples were donated in the 1960s from sires owned by the Walker family. Those samples, frozen in 1968 by Dr Steven Salamon, came from four rams, including ‘Sir Freddie’ born in 1963, owned by the Walkers on their then property at Ledgworth. The Walkers now run 8000 sheep at ‘Woolaroo’, at Yass Plains. The research was undertaken in part courtesy of a grant from Australian Wool Innovation.

Banquet sales success

A LARGE crowd of over 200 people from all states of Australia witnessed the most recent Banquet Angus sale at Mortlake last month. Prices topped at $48,000, and averaged $9625 for the 96 bulls offered, up over $400 on last year. The result was one of Banquet’s best sales - a fitting outcome for the Branson family, stud owners, who were celebrating their 20th annual autumn bull sale.

Banquet National N278, weighing 975kg at 19 months, was the top price bull of the sale - $48,000 paid by Charles and Cass Kimpton, Toora West stud, Glenthompson. The Kimptons are certainly no strangers in selecting top Banquet bulls, having purchased many top sires from the annual Banquet drafts for their stud over the last 19 years, including topping the sale on four occasions. THE Grains Research and Development Corporation has produced a new series of videos on spray application and spray drift management. The video series has been released to support growers and advisers in adhering to best practice to reduce the risk of off-target spray drift and to enhance awareness of the new label instructions to the use of 2,4-D. The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) suspended the labels of all products containing the active ingredient 2,4-D from October 4, 2018, replacing them with a permit. Key changes for using 2,4-D under the permit include: applicators must now use at least a Very Coarse (VC) spray quality; when using a boom sprayer, boom heights must be 0.5 metres (or lower) above the target canopy; and downwind buffers now apply (typically less than 50 metres, subject to rate and product being applied) between application sites, and downwind of sensitive crops and environmentally sensitive aquatic areas. Presented by respected spray consultant, Bill Gordon, the new series of six videos cover the topics of: * 2,4-D label changes; * a spray contractor’s experience; * nozzle selection for larger droplets; * weather conditions and the 2,4-D label; * maximising spray coverage; and * maximising spray efficiency. Thumpa Italian ryegrass proves a valuable addition

TRY SOMETHING NEW: Stephen Pasture Seeds territory manager, Simon Hunt, is encouraging producers to try new varieties of Italian ryegrass – including Thumpa – to achieve a better yield.

THUMPA is a high yielding tetraploid Italian ryegrass ideal for rapid establishment and excellent autumn and winter yields – and for Victorian farmer John Underwood, it’s already proven to be an impressive addition to his pasture sowing program. John manages a 78-hectare property in Glenburn, outside of Yea, and has recently begun using Thumpa Italian ryegrass to fulfil the hay, silage and grazing requirements for the farm’s herd of black and red Angus beef cattle. “Maintaining ideal condition score for our cattle is a major issue,” John said. “And this has resulted in an increased requirement for supplementary feeding - in the past, we’ve bought in large amounts of supplements to help feed the stock – but

it’s been part of our renovation program to reduce the need to buy in feed, and provide more available home-grown feed. “Managing available feed on offer is a real challenge. “The soil here has lower levels of fertility, which we’re currently correcting through the application of lime and a fertiliser program - the area is selenium, copper and zinc deficient, so we’re topping up these with trace minerals.” John said the farm is also challenged with hot summers and wet, often cold winters, as well as a grey/brown soil type with thick clay below. A decision was made to look at a new variety of Italian ryegrass – one that would offer a late maturity with rapid establishment. “We sowed it by direct drilling in

late May, as part of a mix of varieties like brassica and clover, which will persist over the summer season and provide some additional feed,” John said. By mid-November, the trialled Thumpa ryegrass strain had still not gone to head. While initially sown for grazing, John decided to see how the grass would perform in silage production. “The first cut we baled resulted in an average of 5.77 tonnes dry matter per hectare,” he said. “After cutting, there was a very useful fall of 40.5mm of rain which assisted significantly in the regrowth.” Overall, trying a new variety of Italian ryegrass has paid dividends for the Glenburn property, and its beef cattle – proving that better results are always achievable.

NutriSoil – the beginning IN the 1980s, Graham Maddock was like every other farmer – he worked hard on the family farm, did what he could to grow more pasture, and went to bed each night happy. Like his father before, Graham used fertilisers in autumn and insecticides when it was needed. But 30 years ago something happened that would send Graham on a completely different path; he was doused in chemical. “A tractor spray unit, carrying a potent insecticide, burst a vital high pressure line and I was almost completely soaked,” Graham said. During the months of illness, Graham had time to think about just how lucky he had been to escape permanent injury – but more importantly, if the insecticide made him sick, what was it doing to his beef and dairy herds? “As odd as it sounds, it had just never occurred to me before then – that everything I sprayed and supered was ingested by our cattle; cattle that gave us milk and beef,” Graham said. “I had heard of the benefits of using worm castings – vermicast - as a natural fertiliser, and decided to trial it on an experimental crop of Chinese Water Chestnuts. “I haven’t looked back.” Graham’s Chestnuts flourished, and he

was so inspired he trialled test strips of vermicast spread over the rest of his property. “I continued to spread 250kg/ha of castings over the property annually, and the results got better each year,” he said. The limitation of vermicast was cost of transport. In the mid-90s Graham decided to invest the farm’s fertiliser deposit on setting up his own Vermiculture system. The next step was to set up the windrows to take the liquid extract from the worms and so NutriSoil LS (liquid spray) biological concentrate was born. “It is a fertiliser in its own right and has been the only form of fertiliser used on our property for many years now,” Graham said. “Rather than 250kg/ha application with vermicast, only 5L/ha of NutriSoil concentrate is required.” In 2016, NutriSoil won the Australian Organics Best Certified Product of the Year (non food). In 2017, the company was awarded a silver medal for Australian Ethical Enterprises by Moral Fairground. Seeds, Fertilisers and Pasture

Good farming with biologicals and Healthy Earth fertilisers By BAYLEY GOODE, GOODE ORGANICS

INDUSTRY LEADER: Bayley Goode runs Goode Organics, a company that is proud to offer an alternative to traditional fertilisers, including the Healthy Earth fertiliser range.

MICROBES can be found in every type of environment, and play a crucial role in ecosystems because they act as decomposers. From an agricultural perspective, the shift into this space is rapidly growing as farmers seek to better understand their land. One of the best-known examples of microbes working with enzymes and plant nutrition is

within a plant’s rhizophere. As research continues, we better understand that soil microbiology is an ecosystem that feeds plants and helps to protect them from pest and disease as well as recover from environmental stress. Microbes also help to create new biomass when breaking down organic matter - their output varies greatly dependent on their health and numbers present in soil structure. Healthy Earth’s approach to fertiliser has always had soil

nutrition (plant food) at its core to achieve pasture and crop health. German agricultural chemist, Justun von Liebig (1803 -1873), first put forward the idea that plants need three main elements: nitrogen, phosphorous and potash (potassium), the combination known as NPK. His contemporary, Dr Julius Hensel, on the other hand, argued that plants need a lot more than the big three - particularly the trace minerals which were largely ignored at that time.

It is trace elements that are a key component to Healthy Earth fertilisers and the promotion of microbes. Trace elements provide colonisation sites for microbes to grow and multiply. Many of the elements are from volcanic ash, which is specially extracted from a unique source which is then ground up super fine to increase availability. To request further information on our products, please see our details in the NPK Leafspray advert.

Worm Hit hits your soil where it counts

WORM Hit had humble beginnings when Chris Curran and a couple of farmer mates discussed the possibility of compressing composted green waste into a form that could be spread or sown by farmers using conventional equipment. Chris was already in the recycling business - shredding green waste and other materials for councils around Australia and what he was seeing was vast mountains of composted material building up around the country with very little uptake by farmers.

The reason for this was the cost of moving the compost was cost prohibitive, unless the buyer was located close to the source. Chris decided to work with an organisation that used worms to breakdown the compost, turning it into vermicast (“worm poo). 7KLV SURYHG WR EH EHQHo FLDO but still had cost implications. With a farming background and the sole purpose of improving soils by reducing the use of chemical fertilisers and D UHGXFWLRQ RI ZDVWH WR ODQGo OO Chris and his mates investigat-

ed the idea of pelletising worm castings. Early trials produced improvements to the root growth of all plants and crops. The trials on cereal crops proved even more exciting when farmers started returning better yields. They were also seeing changes to the soil structure with less compaction and a more friable soil. Worm Hit turns a mixture of worm castings and a carbon food source into a pelletised form creating one of

the richest natural fertilisers on the planet. “Our worm cast pellets stimulate plant growth more than any other natural product on the market and comSDUHG WR DUWLo FLDO IHUWLOLVHUV and animal manures, Chris said. “Our worm cast pellets are absorbed easily, making it plant available immediately. Worm Hit pellets are a natXUDO PL[ RI EHQHo FLDO VRLO PL crobes, enzymes and watersoluble plant nutrients, and are packed with minerals essential for plant growth and

over 50 per cent more humus than topsoil. It is safe to use on all plants, pasture and cereal crops, won’t burn roots or damage the soil and is easily dispersed by conventional equipment. k:H DUH QRZ FHUWLo HG RU ganic and will become the fertiliser of choice for organic farms, Chris said. “Worm Hit pellets will help farmers not only repair their soil, but it will also help to produce better yields which in turn helps to make farming more sustainable.

The rate of use compared to chemical fertilisers is reduced – a spread of 40100kg per hectare has proven WR EH VXIo FLHQW DQG LV D PRUH cost-effective alternative. “A key issue for farmers is soil health, Chris said. “We are seeing soil health deteriorate markedly as growers use more and more chemical fertilisers to try and achieve the same yield outcomes. Worm Hit is available direct from the manufacturer, authorised agents or for more information go to www. wormhit.com.au.

Drought breaking rain in Bairnsdale, East Gippsland DROUGHT breaking rain fell in the Bairnsdale area, East Gippsland in late February this year, when only 11ml of rain fell. Hobby farmer Ron, from that area, has been using Soilcharge products on his paddocks exclusively for the past three years. The photo taken by Ron of one of his paddocks four days after the rain shows the stark contrast of the green growth compared to neighbouring paddocks - top of photo. The biology enhancement Ron has gained within his soils over the past three years has enabled a quick recovery from very dry conditions.

The bounce back is aided by the photosynthetic capacity of the grass which in turn increases the rate of photosynthesis, hence the rapid greening of his paddocks by natural processes. This is in contrast to the practice RI DSSO\LQJ IHUWLOLVHU WR p XVK WKH paddocks green. Over the three years Ron has applied one application CMP (calcium magnesium phosphate), a grit type product which is made from magnesium silicate, soft rock phosphate and sandstone heated to 1400 degrees and fused.

Ron has also applied Bio-Boost WKUHH WLPHV LQ WKH o UVW \HDU LQ DX tumn, early spring and early summer, and twice in the next two years’ autumn and early spring. Ron just simply said “I am amazed at how simple the process was to change to a biological system and the absolute ripper of a result. Thinking outside the square

A GIPPSLAND farmer is enjoying a 10 per cent increase in milk production, a 33 per cent reduction in feed waste and improved animal health after his first season using a new dairy shelter. Andrew Vogels, who farms at Scotts Creek, said his shelter was the best investment he had made in years. Andrew and his wife Zoe, along with

Andrew’s brother Jamie and his wife Sheryn, run Scotts Creek Dairies in southern Victoria. They milk 630 Friesian-cross cows off their 365-hectare farm, with a further 242-hectare out paddock for young stock, silage and hay. The farm is in a high rainfall area, leaving many paddocks inaccessible and damaged each winter. “We’ve always had

BALEZE BAZADAISE STUD

problems with heavy soils and pugging, and trying to manage cows on the farm during July and August, Mr Vogels said. “We needed a place to put cows where they could be fed and be comfortable. So, the family decided to erect a 3200sqm shelter, which has proven a success since the first cows entered for calving last May, easing pressure on the paddocks over winter and allowing strong spring growth. “We calved close to 500 cows in May-June and then another mob in September and the shelter made life so much easier, Mr Vogels said. “It’s right beside the dairy, the cows are undercover and the calves

are being born in a nice, dry environment. “Rather than trashing paddocks with springers, a month before they were due to calve, we put them in the shelter to start their lead-feed process and then we moved them into the other half for calving. “It saved a large part of the farm. Mr Vogels said another bonus was that feed was being better utilised in the shelter. “There wasn’t wastage from them pushing it into the ground; I reckon we’ve saved a third of our feed, and it’s more efficient from a staff perspective, Mr Vogels said. “Rather than travelling up to five kilometres to feed cows, we can feed them here and it’s a better use of

our time. Mr Vogels said the farm had made 700-800 additional rolls of silage and hay; an increase of about one-third over previous years. “It’s hard to tell first year and because we’ve had a good season but the shelter has definitely helped, he said. “The pastures have held up a lot better and we’ve put in crops for the first time because we won’t have to use those paddocks in winter if it gets wet. The farm has used the shelter for AI cows and during peak milking time Mr Vogels rotated a third of the herd through the shelter every three days. “Not having to walk up wet hills has made a huge difference to those cows, he said.

Pasture management was the main reason to build the shelter - but it’s had other benefits. “We built it for a purpose and it’s definitely served that purpose, Mr Vogels said. “It’s helped with reducing feed wastage, pasture growth, and cow health and comfort, but it’s worth it just for making calving easier. “It’s also good for farmer mental health - I reckon every farmer has been lying in bed at midnight listening to the rain belting down worrying where am I going to put the cows tomorrow. Mr Vogels will consider expanding the shelter in the future, with the price of the initial investment expected to be covered within five years.

BUCHANAN Park Welsh Black cattle reigned supreme at the recent Berwick Show held earlier this year. Three year old Welsh Black bull, Buchanan Park Lincoln, was awarded Supreme Exhibit after winning Interbreed Champion bull. Best Group of Three was also awarded to Buchanan Park, with Lincoln, Natasha and Mollie in the winning group. This group of three also took out the Best Group of Three awards at both the Dandenong and Lang Lang shows. An amazing achievement by three animals. Mollie and Natasha have also been very successful in their own rights, winning Best Pair of females at both the Dandenong and Lang Lang shows. At Berwick, they were the runner up pair. These girls, along with Lincoln, have been standouts at the local shows attended by the stud this year. Stud principals, Allan and Jill Furborough, could not have been prouder of their Welsh Black cattle, and enjoy showcasing them at many events.

duced to enable the herd to continue to hold its own in the beef industry. Temperament and soundness are top priorities focused on; without these qualities, cattle will not achieve rewards. Buchanan Park Stud, situated at Tynong North, was impacted by the recent

devastating bushfires that hit the area. Thankfully all cattle survived, with some pasture loss and fence damage. It was only due to the enormous effort from Allan, and son in law Tim, working tirelessly on their own, that most of the property was able to be saved.

Be inspired by Women in Ag

This year, Melissa Connors, Rural Woman of the Year last year and the brains behind This Farm needs a Farmer will head up the panel, joined by Amy Paul of Ruby Hills Organics, an egg farmer with a passion for the organic farming movement, and Claire Templeton, a young fourth generation farmer who has mastered the paddock to plate concept. Tickets to the Telstra luncheon includes entry to Farm World, lunch, entertainment, champagne on arrival and a gift bag to take home – amazing value and a must attend event. FA R M W O R L D Who is the fittest farmer? HAVE you ever marvelled at the way a farmer seemingly throws around bales of hay? Seen a shearer you admire, his muscles bulging in those tight blue shirts? Or have you seen a hay contractor, sweat dripping, changing the tyre on a John Deere harvester? We all know farming is a job that requires physical prowess – and at this year’s Farm World, an official “fittest farmer” will be crowned. Pitching farmers from across the event against each other to prove skill, fitness, speed and adeptness, who will be crowned Farm World’s Fittest? From throwing bags of feed to wheeling barrows of produce, this fun and free event is designed to be a bit of fun – so come along and enjoy a laugh – or better yet, dob in your dad, grandpa or even your brother.

Brush cutting made easy

CRAZY ABOUT WEEDS: Dave Thorne is the second generation in his family to run WeedWakka, after his dad invented the Australian designed and made product some 20 years ago. See Dave at this year’s Farm World, site 218-219.

CONTROLLING weeds around the property is an ongoing problem for most of us, and the thought of dusting off the old brush cutter fills many people with dread. To make the job a whole lot easier, a small company in Warrandyte has developed the WeedWakka, a cutting attachment that eliminates the frustration that many people experience when using nylon cord and conventional steel blades on their brush cutter. For woody weeds such as blackberry, the Heavy Duty WeedWakka is the perfect tool. The hardened steel blades will cut anything from grass to blackberry and saplings, and never requires sharpening. If the blades strike a rock, they are able to deflect, greatly reducing kick back and stress on the brush cutter. The Heavy Duty WeedWakka is ideal for clearing scrub in rough ground where you would not want to go with a conventional steel blade. Around the back yard, the MultiCut WeedWakka is ideal for trimming along paths, walls and netting fences. It eliminates the constant breakage and rapid wear common to nylon cord, and when the blades are worn, they can be replaced in seconds without the use of tools. The MultiCut WeedWakka has nylon blades which will cut much heavier vegetation than nylon cord will handle. They are clearly visible when rotating, and can be used around trees without damaging the bark. The WeedWakka is available from site 218-219 at Farm World. For more information, phone (03) 9844 4512 or visit www.weedwakka.com.au.

SCARE ‘EM SILLY: To encourage the next generation to be involved, Farm World is running a special scarecrow competition, open to all schools. NEW IN FENCING: Visit Gallagher at this year’s Farm World, and see the very latest in fencing – including their electric fence droppers and insulated line posts.

See the latest in fencing at Farm World

THE Gallagher Insulated Line Post, the tailor-made electric fence post, provides a simple to install and low-cost alternative to traditional fence post options. The flexible, UV resistant post is suited to all electric fencing applications, due to its multiple configurable wire attachment points. From safely containing horses and for quick replacement fencing after fire, to Landcare applications

protecting native vegetation for regeneration, this post has been successfully used by customers in a wide number of situations. To further capitalise on the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of the Insulated Line Post, Gallagher have also introduced the Electric Fence Dropper – designed to reduce the cost of electric fencing even further, by extending the spacing between each fence post.

They are easy to install and are suitable for multi-wire sheep, goat and cattle fence applications. Darren Grace from Markarna Park said they were quick to erect because they are easy to put in. “We find they go into our wet ground really well, and certainly don’t pull out,” he said. “And because the staff can carry quite a few, and a rammer, it’s

certainly easier to handle these Gallagher Insulated Line Posts instead of star pickets.” For expert advice on the full range of Gallagher on farm solutions, including Multi Powered i Series Energizers and TWR Weigh Scales and EID Tag Readers, visit Gallagher at site 16 at Wagin Woolarama and speak with territory managers about a solution to suit your needs.

Will your school be crowned the scarecrow champs? EXPRESSIONS of interest are now open to all schools for the Farm World Scarecrow Competition. Farm World want schools from across the state to get creative – think outside the box, and create a spectacular, life size scarecrow to be proudly displayed at the 2019 event for all to see. This year’s theme is Love Our Farmers, so keep this in mind when designing. Great prizes are up for grabs - including a desk riser valued at $369 for the winning school, plus a stationery pack for each student in the winning class, generously donated by Office Choice Warragul. Be quick – entries are due by April 5. Email alison@lardnerpark.com.au for more information. This competition is proudly sponsored by Office Choice Warragul.

MADE TOUGH FOR AUSTRALIAN CONDITIONS: Hardwood Mills make the best sawmill and timber cutting products – including their latest innovation, a $2700 trailer that makes your sawmill portable.

Hardwood Mills – the Australian choice

WHEN it comes to timber sawmills and cutting equipment, no one knows more than the team at Hardwood Mills. Designed in Australia, by Australians, for Australian hardwoods – the products are guaranteed to cut all Australian hardwood. Most recently, the team introduced a new fully portable trailer option. Able to be retro fitted to any GT 26 portable band saw sawmill, and supplied with a VIN, mechanical loading brakes and able to carry six metres of track, the trailer is a no-brainer for all those in the industry. For just $2700, the trailer makes your mill totally portable - and quick and easy to level; just pull up, drop the legs down

and you’re ready for action. Designed on a truck chassis, this trailer is built like a tank; very tough, and made to last. Come and see the team from Hardwood Mills at Lardner Park during this year’s Farm World – the team will be demonstrating every day mill dimensional timber, as well as slabbing. With a mill for every budget, get along and say hi to Geoff and Kerry at Farm World, or for more information go to www.hardwoodmills.com.au or phone them on 1300 406 984. They are also the stockists of Norwood Portable band saw sawmills – the Lumber Pro HD 36 fully hydraulic mill will be demonstrated at Farm World. Make an impact on your cross breeding

THE Red Poll breed has been prevalent in Australia for over 100 years this longevity of breeding ensures reliable ongoing supply of proven blood lines, which also still provide genetic purity. A moderate framed beef breed enhances their efficiency along with their docile temperament, maintained through generations of selective breeding. Through this, they offer easier

management in tough Australian conditions. Red Polls have decades of consistent success in commercial carcase competitions therefore providing an ongoing story of their beef quality. Producers continue to seek out Red Polls as a means of growing a premium beef animal. The Red Poll beef is particularly fine grained and has featured highly as the preferred choice of USA chefs

in leading culinary magazines. Females have easy conception rates, resulting in regular calving and therefore ensuring annual returns on investment. This all provides the perfect recipe for gaining real heterosis benefits for the commercial producer. Red Poll breeders look forward to welcoming you at this year’s Farm World, Site A8, to discuss Red Polls animals will be on display.

RED POLLS READY TO VIEW: Red Poll breeders will be at this year’s Farm World, extolling the virtues of their breed, which has been in Australia for more than 100 years.

SAVE up to 75% OFF FILL YOUR STOMACH, AND THE PANTRY: This year, Farm World will hold the Marketplace – the perfect excuse to stock up on homemade treats and goodies.

Stock the pantry at the Farm World Marketplace THIS year, the Lardner Park Events Centre will be transformed into the ‘Farm World Marketplace’ showcasing a vast array of gorgeous produce and products under the theme “Make It – Bake It – Grow It”. Farm World Marketplace will be held during the weekend only – Saturday, April 13 and Sunday, April 14.

This bustling new initiative will also feature live demonstrations on the main stage, including cooking, lifestyle, coffee, indoor plants, wine, fibre, sustainability and much more. So bring your shopping bags, because this is a great opportunity to stock up on some scrumptious pantry items and special treats for both yourself and the home.
