Hard work equals success for LamBacon entrepreneur AS far as she is aware, Toni Barton is the first person in Australia - and most probably the world - to produce lamb bacon. Made using belly flaps, the meat is cured, smoked, packaged and eaten – just the same as a traditional piece of bacon. The difference, however, is that lamb bacon contains no pork – and therein lies the success of Toni’s whirlwind rise to the top of agricultural entrepreneurs. Now, Toni is at the tip of a potential $2 million iceberg, with her product, LamBacon, recently contracted to supply 1500 supermarkets nationwide. It has been a whirlwind ride, especially considering that five years ago Toni was like every other urbanite; raised on a dairy farm, she swore the rural life was not for her. High heels, executive meetings and leadership were part of everyday working in financial services in Manhattan. Now, Toni is more comfortable in work stained jeans and RM Williams. “I was on Wall Street when the Global Financial Crisis hit,” she said. “I saw a lot of things that made me question my sense of purpose. “Ultimately, I was working for a company that contributed to people’s loss – I didn’t want to do that anymore, I wanted to be a part of something I was proud of.” Returning to Australia, Toni sought solace in the great outdoors, deciding that a few acres were exactly what was in order. “I wanted to buy five acres; I wanted a patch of land to grow veggies and live that wholesome kind of life people talk about,” she said. Instead, her eye was caught by 200 hectares in Nulla Vale, just outside of Lancefield. “I loved it - but I thought if I’m

People want to know where their food comes from, what the story is behind it – there are a lot of consumers who want to know their farmer, but not a lot of farmers who want to know their consumer. - TONI BARTON going to quit my job, I need to be doing something that makes it viable – so I bought 40 Australian White ewes – the Wagyu of sheep - and took the plunge.” Although she jokes about knowing nothing about sheep in the beginning, Toni has always known that for any farm to survive, it takes work. Watching her mother and father rise for milking at 4am each day taught her more than how to make a good cup of coffee – it taught her perseverance is best matched with knowledge. So Toni threw herself into her business, For the love of Lamb. She spent years learning about healthy soils, rotational grazing and animal husbandry. She spent months working in a butcher’s room, learning how to process and pack a carcass.

Opera house net ban for Victoria

OPERA house fishing nets, often used to catch yabbies, will be banned from July 1 next year. Announced last month, the blanket ban will apply to all waterways on both government and private land. Minister for Agriculture, Jaala Pulford, said the nets were known to cause problems for native animals, and the ban would have a positive effect of populations of platypus and turtles.

“Opera house nets have been placing our platypus population at risk and so it’s time for us to embrace different fishing gear that will catch just as many yabbies without impacting our precious wildlife,” Ms Pulford said. “The Goulburn, Loddon and Campaspe rivers as well as lakes Eildon, Eppalock and Toolondo, and Cairn Curran and Rocklands reservoirs are perfect waterways for catching yabbies – I caught

my first yabby at Cairn Curran.” As part of the changes, a onefor-one trade-in is planned, whereby fishers can trade in their old opera house nets for free ‘wildlife friendly’ open top lift nets. The Victorian Fisheries Authority will work with the fishing tackle sector, anglers and environmental groups on an awareness campaign around ‘wildlife friendly’ yabby gear leading up to July 1 next year.

Hard work equals success for LamBacon entrepreneur

ENTREPRENEUR: Toni Barton has just secured a contract to supply 1500 supermarkets nation-wide with LamBacon, an Australian first product she created out of a no-waste approach to lamb sales. catch Toni at a still moment. First, she was pulling twin lambs, then curing a surprise order, mustering a mob that had broken through a fence and finally, washing down her meat room. A woman alone on a farm brings to mind images of McLeod’s Daughters, but the reality is somewhat different. Toni is busy, from the moment she wakes until she finally falls into bed. “There’s a lot going on, always,” she said. “There have been times when I’m in tears, convinced I can’t do it all. “But then I get up, and I do – because when you are a farmer on your own, there’s no choice.” Although she is running both companies herself, Toni is quick to point out that her success would not have been possible without help. From her family, who would always listen and be supportive, to the neighbours – who now have a supplier agreement with Toni to help meet her required quota of

500 wethers a year. “I turned up in this community, and I didn’t know anything about being a sheep farmer – but my neighbour, the Patersons, who are fifth generation farmers, were only too happy to help; they talked about the grass, the weather, the way things grow, business ideas, fixing machinery; mostly sage advice over a glass of wine or two.” At the end of the day, from New York to Nulla Vale, Toni has found her place in a small town, curing a product Australia can’t get enough of. “That’s why I’m here, really,” she said. “Because this is the kind of community that’s nice to belong to, and because I can be a full time farmer on my own, and know that there is always someone who is willing to help if I get stuck.” For more information on LamBacon, visit www. lambbacon.com.au, or for information on For the love of Lamb, go to www.mikonipark. com.au.

Bank on cattle prices in 2019

CATTLE prices are predicted to rebound in 2019 and sit at around 500c/kg for the next couple of years. The latest In Focus: Beef report, released by NAB Agribusiness, has the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) forecast to fall as low as 475c/ kg in 2018, but back up to the 500c range in 2019. NAB Agribusiness economist, Phin Ziebell, said the situation should be seen in context – with the price predictions so much better than those predicted in years gone by. “The EYCI has recently fallen below 500c/kg for the first time in three years, which feels tough after the record prices of the past few years,” Mr Ziebell said. “However, between 2004 and 2014, the EYCI averaged 346c/kg – and it reached a maximum price of 428c/kg in that period. “The 2015-17 boom has put many beef producers in a strong position, and they have over $800 million in Farm Management Deposits. “Furthermore, the Australian dollar has fallen more than five US cents since the end of January, boosting local returns.” Mr Ziebell believes rainfall will largely dictate short term movements in the EYCI, but over the longer term global fundamentals will have an impact on the domestic market.

FALL THEN RISE: NAB Agribusiness economist, Phin Ziebell, predicts that the cattle EYCI will drop this year, but will re-bound to sit around 500c/kg in 2019.

“It has been exceptionally dry across most of Australia so far this year, and prices are likely to increase if an autumn break comes to pass,” Mr Ziebell said. “However, if the drier than average conditions experienced in April in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria

and South Australia persist, there is likely to be increased selling, due to grain and hay being expensive and in short supply.” These conditions have caused herd rebuilding to slow, and March data shows female slaughter up to 48.5 per cent, and bull and steer slaughter down. Slaughter is expected to gradually rise to just under eight million head this year. Against a challenging domestic picture, Mr Ziebell said global trends are providing mixed signals. “Export prices to the US and Japan have been reasonably resilient and the industry received a good run in 2014-15 due to a rally in US cattle indicators, reflecting the hangover from the 2011 US drought dampening domestic production,” Mr Ziebell said. “However, the US herd has rebuilt rapidly, and US Department of Agriculture forecasts point to a 5.7 per cent rise in domestic beef production in 2018 while imports are expected to grow only 1.5 per cent, a far cry from the 31 per cent growth in 2014. “Australian beef in the US has remained resilient. “However, there will likely be some pressure in the US and this will be compounded across our key export markets by higher exports from low cost producers in South America.”

From page 1 She spent weeks working with her neighbours, watching the way they drafted, handled and raised sheep. And she spent hours developing a brand that would appeal to the consumer. “I knew I needed to establish a relationship with my customers; farmers markets are perfect for that,” Toni said. “For the love of Lamb is a consumer direct model because my farm is small, I have to make it work harder to meet the investment requirements. “People want to know where their food comes from, what the story is behind it – there are a lot of consumers who want to know their farmer, but not a lot of farmers who want to know their consumer.” Able to control the price, the quality and the distribution, Toni was soon processing 45 lambs and selling across nine markets a month. “That was the beginning of LamBacon – I was, and still am, selling fresh lamb meat at the markets, but I always had left over flaps and belly,” Toni said. “I’m responsible for the use of the whole carcase, and I was feeding these leftovers to the dogs, which was a waste of my money and my product.” A chance meeting with American barbecue master, Jon Bell, saw Toni’s first batch of smoked lamb belly – aka LamBacon – produced. “I took five kilos to my first market, and it sold out, so then I took 10 kilos, then 25,” she said. That was 18 months ago. Now, Toni is curing 100 kilos of LamBacon a week, while still visiting farmers markets with For the love of Lamb. Her rise to success has been swift – in February this year, the Victorian Government sent her to Dubai as part of a trade mission delegation, and last month she was invited to speak at the Telstra Women in Ag Farmworld luncheon. It has been, to put it lightly, frenetic. It took five phone calls from the Southern Farmer to

to take on the industry one milk bottle at a time - launching their own brand, Gippsland Jersey, 18 months ago. “We’re just two people trying to get something done, Steve said. “When we launched, we only had orders for about 100 litres, which is not a business - but we had sold 5000 litres in the first week. Gippsland Jersey has three key business pillars; farmers must be paid a fair price, the stigma around mental illness must be broken down, and old fashioned kindness should be part of the everyday. “A few cents from every bottle of Gippsland Jersey milk goes into a fund that is then used to support local dairy farmers, Sallie said. “We love to do random acts of kindness for dairying families who are doing it tough. Steve currently milks 400 Jersey cows, and is the main supplier of the brand. A second farm, located in Poowong, also supplies the brand, helping put 20,000 litres a week into bottles. Although both Steve and Sallie are passionate about all aspects of the dairy industry, they are perhaps most driven when it comes to helping raise mental health awareness. “Mental health is a serious illness that requires care, help and support, Sallie said. “It cannot be left to fix itself - you must reach out and seek help. The Gippsland Jersey Calendar is more than just something to hang on the kitchen wall. Not only is there a listing for healthcare professionals, there are also 12 stories - raw tales of heartbreak, of loneliness and of

emerging from the darkness. “These stories are real, they are farmers just like everyone else, Sallie said. “When you suffer from mental illness, it can feel like you are the only one - but that just isn’t the case. “That’s what I want to get across more than anything - there is nothing to be ashamed of. That day in the kitchen, watching her father cry, is an image forever burned in Sallie’s mind. She will never forget watching her Dad battle the years of depression that followed. “He lost that fire in his belly, she recalled simply. “We are left with no answers, just a ripple of sadness and heartbreak. “That’s not how my Dad should be remembered - it’s not how I think of him - but mental illness took him from us before he was actually gone. Despite the heartbreak, Sallie and Steve have reclaimed their lives - they are forging ahead with their big dreams for Gippsland Jersey, and their enthusiasm and compassion has helped earn them a contract to supply 12 Gippsland Woolworths stores with milk. At the end of the day, the big orders are nice, but they are not the cornerstone of Gippsland Jersey. Instead, the little brand wants to make a big difference in people’s heads and hearts - because out of their own personal darkness, Sallie and Steve can still see the stars. Mental health is a serious illness that requires care, help and support. It cannot be left to fix itself - you must reach out and seek help.

ONE Sunday afternoon, Michael Bowen walked into his daughter’s kitchen and, to her complete shock, broke down. He was having a mental breakdown - but couldn’t put into words what was wrong; he could only sob like his heart was breaking. Leaving school at age 13 to work on the family dairy farm, Michael had a big engine - often working up to 18 hour days while trying to juggle family life and stay afloat. But almost overnight, Michael changed – caught in a darkness he couldn’t escape. It was the beginning of a road that would break not just his families’ hearts, but all of those in his Gippsland community. In March 2016, Michael Bowen took his own life. He had been a successful entrepreneurial dairy farmer; he loved his four children, his farm, his cows and his neighbours - but mental illness took that from him. This June, Michael’s daughter Sallie will drop an 18/19 calendar across Gippsland in honour of the man who taught her the meaning of hard work, and the value and love of storytelling. “I absolutely loved my Dad; he was kind, compassionate and bold - a man who could make anything happen, Sallie recalled. “His capacity for life equalled three men - he was strong as an ox, nothing could break him. “Or so we thought. Two months after Michael’s death, the dairy crisis brought other families to their knees families like Steve Ronalds’, who first settled in Gippsland in 1895. A chance encounter between the two - and a common desire to help Victorian dairy farmers - saw Sallie and Steve decide

Being born in Gippsland was the beginning of Adam’s story ADAM’S story begins on a dairy farm in Gippsland born and raised. Adam’s mental health has been a big part of his journey over the past two years. He has always known when to seek help from trusted friends, family and professionals when the pressures of the farm, and life in general, have become overwhelming. “Be willing to take a step back, assess the whole situation,” Adam advises. “Honestly ask the question, ‘is this the best decision for me?’,” This is the question Adam had to ask himself after the milk price crash of 2016. He made the heavy and incredibly difficult decision to walk away from his own dairy operation - an operation that he thought would be his one and only career; an operation he had started planning more than 10 years earlier, at a very young age, with the purchase of his first registered Holstein heifer. His decision was made a little easier through a brush with reality TV only 12 months earlier on “Farmer wants a Wife”. This opened Adam’s mind up to the possibilities of a life beyond the farm. “I didn’t realise how socially isolated I had become until I was thrown back into ‘life’ through the series,” Adam said. “I realised that I enjoyed

Slaughter rates to increase PRODUCER de-stocking, lack of rain and a strong international market are all predicted to drive Australian cattle slaughter to almost 7.5 million head by the end of the year, four per cent higher than last year. Meat and Livestock Australia’s (MLA) latest update, released in the Cattle Industry Projections, predict that kill numbers will soon reflect the challenging summer/autumn seasons. Scott Tolmie, MLA market intelligence manager, said poor rainfall across many cattle regions had temporarily subdued herd rebuilding efforts. “The first quarter has seen both male and female slaughter running well above 2017 levels, and combined with the largely neutral weather outlook has led to a slight upward revision in the annual slaughter forecasts, up four per cent year-on-year,” Mr Tolmie said. “The EYCI has responded to the larger flow of cattle and challenging conditions for many re-stockers, dipping below 500c/kg carcase weight

mer had been particularly apparent in NSW and Victoria, where the supply of young cattle was playing a key role in driving the EYCI lower. “Seasonal conditions for the remainder of autumn and into winter this year will dictate the availability of young cattle and how fierce the

competition will be among different buyers, particularly in NSW.” Mr Tolmie said the growing volume of exports out of the United States and some South American countries would place some downward pressure on the finished cattle market. “Beef production and con-

sumption levels in the United States will need to be closely monitored, with a significant lift in grainfed cattle kills expected in coming months, which is likely to flow through to increased competition in our key export markets,” Mr Tolmie said. “US beef production is on

course to exceed 12.5 million tonnes in 2018 according to the latest United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) projections - this figure represents a five per cent production increase compared to last year, as low rainfall in a number of the largest cattle producing states combined with sustained drought in the Northern Plains drive more cattle onto feed.” Mr Tolmie said there had been a strong start to the year for carcase weights in Australia, with the year-to-February national average carcase weight sitting at 301kg, five kg higher than the same period in 2017. “As a result, the 2018 forecast for carcase weights has been adjusted slightly higher than what was predicted in January, to 294.4kg,” he said. “The combined upwards revision to slaughter and carcase weights has seen 2018 beef production revised slightly higher to 2.22 million tonnes cwt, while beef exports are expected to record a slight increase on 2017 levels, at just under 1.1 million tonnes shipped weight.”

INDUCTED: Brian Anderson, of Bundalong Holsteins at Kongwak, has been inducted into the Genetics Australia honour roll. He is pictured with prize bull, Medallion.

Gippsland dairy farmers inducted on honour roll GIPPSLAND bull, Medallion, has taken another step towards iconic status after his owners were inducted on the Genetics Australia honour roll. Brian and Bill Anderson, of Bundalong Holsteins at Kongwak, were among eight new honour roll inductees announced during Genetics Australia’s 60th anniversary dinner. There have been just 31 breeders added to the honour roll in the history of the organisation. Genetics Australia’s breeding, genetics and production manager, Peter Thurn, said the honour roll recognised breeders of bulls that had made significant contributions to Genetics Australia and to the Australian dairy industry. “They have made an outstanding contribution through the provision of

elite genetics,” Mr Thurn said. Mr Thurn said Medallion was one of those rare bulls that left an indelible mark on the industry. “The Anderson family is to be congratulated on breeding such an amazing and influential bull,” he said. “It’s probably going to be an icon of the Holstein breed in Australia.” Medallion has almost 10,000 herd recorder daughters so far. “At 12 and a half years of age, he’s one of our oldest bulls at Genetics Australia - but still one of our highest selling,” Mr Thurn said. “He is treated by farm staff like royalty… they love him. “Medallion ranks alongside Glif, Judge, Shotime and Winluke as one of Ge-

netics Australia’s greatest sires.” Medallion is notable for producing cows with strong stature and udders, combined with excellent capacity, production and consistency. The other new names on the honour roll are Bryan and Jo Dickson of Emu Banks Holsteins at Terang in south-west Victoria, Daryl and Lani Hoey of Beulah Jerseys at Katunga in northern Victoria, Lynton and Lisa Broad of Broadlin Jerseys at Lockington in northern Victoria, John and Vicki Lillico of Hindlee Holsteins at Smithton in Tasmania, Ian and Peter Willcocks of Manna Farm Holsteins at Yankalilla South Australia, Colin and Narelle Bacon of Colnarco Jerseys at Lockington, and George Wagner of Rengaw Holsteins at Winnaleah in Tasmania.

NEWS IN BRIEF z Trawool drug rehab THE Mitchell Shire Council will vote on a proposal to develop the historic Trawool Estate into a 20 bed drug rehabilitation facility. Nearby residents from both Trawool and Seymour are up in arms about the plan, and have strongly objected to developer Eastern Access Community Health’s (EACH) plans. z Stock thefts IT has been revealed more than $36,000 worth of sheep and cattle have been stolen from around Casterton in the six months to July 17, with some calling the area a stock theft hot spot. Late last month, a further $26,000 was reported stolen, one case being 67 pregnant ewes taken from a property in Nagambie. z Farm values rise VICTORIAN Farm values continue to rise, with a report by Rural Bank revealing Loddon, Benalla and Strathbogie had the highest number of largevalue sales across Northern Victoria. In contrast, the shires of Mansfield and Campaspe were two of the few to decline in value, both recording lower than average prices compared to the previous three years. z AAMI releases crash analysis SEYMOUR and Heathcote residents are the most likely in the state to be involved in an animal collision. Insurer AAMI has released analysis of over 900 claims, which revealed the two towns were found to be in the top three worst in Victoria. Four in five claims lodged involved an incident with a kangaroo. z Milk price announced FONTERRA Australia last month announced that the Fixed Base Milk Price for the 2018/19 season will be $5.90 per kilogram of milk solids (kg/MS), following the conclusion of its annual tender process. Fixed Base Milk Price is a price risk management tool that lets farmers lock in a set price for up to 70 per cent of the season’s milk before the season starts, providing greater price certainty by helping to reduce farmers’ exposure to market volatility. z Penalty for low wages THE operators of a remote Northern Territory homestead have been penalised a total of $56,766, after ignoring pay advice and underpaying more than a dozen backpackers from overseas. David Mayne Pty Ltd, which trades as the Barkly Homestead, has been penalised $48,320 after admitting to underpaying the 17 employees a total of $23,753. In addition, homestead manager and company shareholder, Andrew Mayne, has been penalised $8446. The Barkly Homestead offers accommodation, a restaurant and a roadhouse on the Barkly Highway, about 210 kilometres east of Tennant Creek. z Black sesame crops UNIVERSITY researchers, together with seed technology company AgriVentis Technologies, will be harvesting the first black sesame crops near Rockhampton to test the viability of the condiment as a commercial crop. AgriVentis is the first Australian company to conduct large-scale commercial trials of the valuable condiment. z New beef brand GREENHAM has launched a new beef brand for its Moe abattoir. To be known as Bass Strait Beef, the brand will be 100 per cent grass fed.

STUFFED: A man from Kilmore has been found guilty of breaching the Wildlife Act after he shot, stuffed and hung a koala he had poached from French Island.

Man charged for shooting, stuffing koala A MAN who shot dead a French Island koala, had it stuffed, and then hung it on his wall as a decoration was prosecuted in the Seymour Magistrates’ Court in April this year. The court heard the man found the koala on the side of a road on the island, which is located in Western Port Bay, and then shot it with a .22 rifle before he stuffed it himself and mounted it.

In June last year, officers from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) executed a search warrant at the accused’s property, locating the mounted koala. Program manager compliance operations, Greg Chant, said when the man was interviewed and asked why he killed the koala, he responded it was ‘something to do’. “We take these matters

monetary contribution to the court fund. Under the Wildlife Act 1975, the maximum penalties associated with killing, destroying and being in control of unlawfully taken protected wildlife range from $7928 to $38,056 and/or six to 24 months’ imprisonment. AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award winners revealed

Victorian lamb slaughter increases 29% THE Eastern States Trade Lamb Indicator (ESTLI) has tracked below 2017 levels since early March, and the lack of a decent autumn break continues to put pressure on the market. Eastern states lamb slaughter has seen an increasing trend over the past few months, totalling almost 1.48 million head – up 19 per cent year-on-year, although tracking closely to 2016 levels. In contrast to 2017, this year has seen continued dry seasonal conditions in the south, which have been a contributing factor in the offloading of stock, with the largest increases seen in major sheep producing regions. NSW saw an increase of 30 per cent year-on-year, totalling 426,125 head, while Victoria processed 818,448 head, up 29 per cent on year-ago levels. Meanwhile, SA has seen a decrease in the number of lambs slaughtered in April, by 21 per cent, totalling 199,247 head. Eastern states sheep slaughter has seen a similar trend to lamb, tracking very closely to 2016 levels, totalling 427,995 for April, up 34 per cent year-on-year.

WINNER: Melissa Connors has been named as the AgriFutures Rural Victorian Award winner, for her project This Farm Needs a Farmer. The national winner will be announced in Canberra later this year.

SEVEN exceptional women have been recognised for their contribution to Australia’s rural industries by being named state and territory winners of the 2018 AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award. The AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award acknowledges the essential role that women play in rural industries, and rural and regional businesses and communities. Competition was fierce for the 2018 award, with 21 per cent more applicants than in 2017. The state-based selection panels completed a number of review and interview stages, before the eventual winner was declared at state and territory announcement events in capital cities across Australia over the last three months. The seven winners are emerging leaders who have either already commenced a project that is positively im-

pacting rural and regional Australia, and the award will enable them to boost, expand or elevate their work; or they have identified a problem or opportunity and the award will help them to bring this to life. The Victorian winner was Melissa Connors, who launched her project ‘This Farm Needs a Farmer’ in 2015, which aims to build stronger, more engaged communities by connecting tree changers with established and retired farmers who can pass on their valuable knowledge to newcomers. Each state and territory winner receives a $10,000 bursary to assist in delivery of their winning idea. The winners will now represent their state or territory at the AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award Gala in Canberra, held later this year, where the national winner and national runner up for the 2018 award will be announced.

Claim your Aussie pump on tax AUSTRALIAN Pump Industries is recommending that farmers check with their tax agent now to see if they qualify for the Federal Government’s 100 per cent depreciation benefit. With the June 30 deadline looming, eligible farmers are being urged to buy assets now in order to maximise their claim for this financial year. Aussie Pumps is foremost in the design, manufacture and distribution of Australia’s biggest range of self-priming centrifugal pumps for farm applications. The trend towards diesel pumps for the last few years means major savings to farmers in fuel and reliability - but with a higher capital cost than petrol engine drives. Eligible farmers can get up to 50 per cent savings on their acquisitions, provided they move before the end of the financial year. The qualifications are simple; the asset has to be under $20,000 price range. Secondly, there is no limit to the number of acquisitions that can be made within that parameter. Lastly, the company taking advantage of the depreciation must have a turnover of less than $10 million. By taking advantage of the 100 per cent depreciation, famers who would normally buy an Aussie petrol drive fire pump or water transfer unit can now move to diesel. Diesel drive pumps offer a real return on investment in terms of economy and longevity. The Aussie pump range includes Yanmar, Kubota and now Hatz diesel drive pumps in sizes from 2” up to 6”. Delivering up to 2600 lpm

Woodshield is a fencing that lasts a lifetime WOODSHIELD is an Australian first manufacturing company that offers timber posts that look good, forever. The difference that sets WoodShield apart from other plastic fencing varieties is that the process involves taking a natural, untreated timber post, and coating it in recycled plastic. The final product is a fence that is light, durable, versatile and suitable for any agricultural use - a fence that looks good, without the need for on-going maintenance. Even better, WoodShield is the only organically certified fencing material available in Australia and New Zealand – and no one is a bigger fan than renowned organics expert, Tim Marshall. Tim Marshall is the author of the best-selling compost book, Compost: the ultimate organic guide to recycling your garden along with three other non-fiction books - Bug, Weed and the New Organic Gardener. Tim has visited over 1000 certified organic farms in Australia and more than 1500 certified organic farms in 25 other countries - and said WoodShield not only complimented any farm’s look aesthetically, but it also provided peace of mind with its organic certification. “When I first saw this product, I was immediately impressed by the simplicity of the design concept, to achieve a much needed product with impressive performance,” he said. “A WoodShield post has 4050 per cent more strength than other timber posts of the same size and a 100 per cent greater breaking angle.

LOOKING SMART: WoodShield provides a property with good looks that last forever, as well as being a certified organic property. WoodShield is used on-farm at Milawa Organic Beef in North East Victoria. Pictured is property owner, Alan Wood. “Chemically treated posts have been shown to contaminate soil and are now providing a disposal headache for local and state governments, especially as the viticulture industry is now producing a huge volume of broken posts each year - but WoodShield is different; the posts are made from renewable and recycled materials, and do not use persistent chemicals.” Mr Marshall said that WoodShield worked so effectively because the closely-bonded recycled plastic coating completely isolates the post from the processes that cause decay. “Boring insects, fungi and other decay organisms simply cannot get to the wood,” he said. “The timber provides rigidity and the plastic provides additional support

and resistance to breaks from bending or twisting.” Phil and Eunice Dunham are certified organic grape and wine producers from Parallax Vineyard in the Coal Valley region of Tasmania. “We could not find any affordable alternative posts that could satisfy our organic certification requirements,” Mr Dunham said. “Where we are it is very wet, and any untreated wood in the ground rots after a short time. “We were preparing to make our own steel end posts, but steel prices rose significantly at that time; luckily we were one of the first to discover WoodShield posts, when they first became available. “At first we were concerned about the ends, because we wanted to ram them, and they were not pointed and had plastic end caps, but they have a strong end cap and they did everything the manufacturer promised. “After eleven years in the ground, we have not had any breakages or other problems.” Mr Dunham said that, particularly in wet areas, timber in the ground rots “at the intersection of air, water and earth”. “We call it ‘collar rot’; even hardwood and some other supposedly natural and organic treatments rot, they just rot slower - WoodShield doesn’t,” he said. WoodShield is more than just a fence - it looks good, while providing the safest method of containment for livestock; a case of good looks meets necessity. IMAGINE you are stranded; on a boat, in a car, astride a motorbike. There has been an accident - instinctively, you reach for your mobile; but there is no service. What happens next depends on two things - whether you do, or don’t, own a KTI Safety Alert PLB. Without it, you are stranded - and must either find your own way out of trouble, or wait for a search party to arrive. With a PLB (personal locator beacon), you can switch it on and - regardless of how remote you are - get a signal out for help. A PLB is the one device you truly need in any type of emergency. Made by Kinetic Technology International Pty Ltd, a PLB works by communicating with the Cospas-Sarsat system, which incorporates an entire constellation of military grade satellites. The satellites belong to several networks that each provides global coverage 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. The PLB-satellite link is incredibly robust, designed to work reliably under the most demanding situations including thick cloud cover and heavy precipitation – even during hailstorms and heavy snowfall. The Cospas-Sarsat system feeds emergency signals directly into the national Search and Rescue facility, eliminating the “middle man” pitfalls of other systems. Unlike satellite phone, there are no commercial contracts or subscriptions - and the batteries last for years on standby without needing to recharge. Put simply, a KTI Safety

GET ONE BEFORE TAX TIME: Personal locator beacons, such as the KTI Safety Alert PLB, could be the difference between life and death in an emergency situation.

Alert PLB can save your life. “Mobile telephones just don’t work when they are in black spots or out of cell tower range and of course, they are totally useless when the battery has run flat or when they’ve been damaged,” Kinetic Technology spokesman, Mark Knowles, said. “A two-way radio is of little use if there is nobody else in range - and is often limited in hilly terrain. “The other option is a satellite phone - these are bulky, heavy, very expensive, offer unreliable coverage and have limited battery reserve. “They also require contracts, which cost money each month to maintain.” Unlike other options, a KTI Safety Alert PLB is lightweight, can be worn on the arm and is, literally, the one thing that could save your life in an emergency situation. With a built-in high power strobe light and an internal high performance GPS receiver, which can provide position updates every five

minutes, the PLB is able to quickly and effectively deliver the wearer’s position to search crews. The KTI Safety Alert PLB meets all requirements of the Australian Standard, including self-buoyancy if dropped in water; and is waterproof to a depth of three metres. It features a swivel antenna to enable correct deployment in challenging environments, including use with a life vest in water. It comes standard with a 10 year battery standby life, a 10 year warranty and best of all, is made right here in Australia. The KTI Safety Alert PLB is supplied with a durable carry case, a lanyard with whistle and a mirror style reflector. It weighs less than 140 grams and measures 88 x 64 x 31mm - and sells for less than $300. So do yourself and your loved ones a favour and invest in your own safety; buy a KTI Safety Alert PLB today. Chaser bin gets the most out of grain storage

VICTORIAN farmer John Allen’s career as a diesel mechanic and hay contractor has put him behind the wheel of a lot of tractors, but his latest purchase has impressed him like few others have. Last year, as his business continued to grow, he was in the market to add to his fleet of six tractors and went looking for a new machine with the power and versatility to tackle a range of jobs in the most efficient way possible. His search ended with the Case IH Optum CVT, delivered last September and already a tractor John couldn’t imagine being without. “It’s proven to be so versatile – you end up doing things with it you didn’t think you would, John said. “It definitely doesn’t feel like you’re driving a 300 horsepower tractor.

A MIXED Merino/cropping property in southern Victoria is maximising their on-farm storage using a large capacity chaser bin. Aaron Sanderson runs a mixed cropping enterprise - including canola, wheat, barley and lupins and a range of forage options – alongside the family Merino stud. He said the past two seasons have exceeded cropping expectations, resulting in an overflow of product. The Sandersons have solved this grain storage problem by using a 31 tonne Dunstan chaser bin. “We purchased it two seasons ago, in 2016, prior to last year’s big harvest, Mr Sanderson said. “We looked at it to actually complement our on-farm grain storage with the utilisation of these grain bags. “We don’t have enough upright storage and, leading into the big harvest last year, we felt that this was the best option for us to actually control a bit more of our product and carry it through with the low prices and high yields that we were seeing. The chaser bin receives the grain directly from the harvester and is then used to fill the silo bags. Later in the year the bin is also used to unload from the silo bags and into a truck. Mr Sanderson said the chaser bin is particularly useful when loading grain trucks during the wetter months. “You just pull the tractor in, under you go, two fills for a Bdouble and it is pretty simple, Mr Sanderson said.

Optum CVT proves its worth

CHASER: Aaron Sanderson, of Coonooer Bridge in southern Victoria, is using a Dunstan chaser bin during harvest to fill grain bags and at other times of the year to transfer grain from bags to trucks.

“Or you can already have it prefilled before the truck arrives; it has worked very, very well. “Without it, there’s no way we could have loaded trucks at certain times of the year. The chaser bin also has load cells on it which is particularly useful in ensuring the trucks leaving the property are under their maximum weight. “We’ve actually been able to manage the chain of responsibility that is on us now, with over-

loading of trucks, Mr Sanderson said. “We utilise the load cells, load trucks spot on and know confidently that they are going out on the main road and they’re under. He said the speed of the auger was also important in getting grain from the paddock to trucks or grain bags. “It just works together because you are able to utilise this 20 inch unloading auger at 12 and a half

tonnes a minute; two and a half minutes and it is unloaded and then you are back chasing again, he said. “The truck drivers love it - they are in and out in no time and that is what it is all about at harvest time, just that efficiency and keeping everything going. The 31 tonne Dunstan chaser bin is pulled by a 245 boosted horse power front wheel assist tractor, with the lighter option working well out in the paddock.

Polaris sales range continues to grow

POLARIS Industries bucked the trend of a contracting market to continue growing throughout the month of April, helping it to take the mantle as market leader in all eight Australian states and territories year-to-date 2018. Coming off a dominant 2017 where the company finished the year as Australia’s number one off-road vehicle brand, Polaris was again a clear market leader in April for the fourth consecutive time in four months. Polaris’ April market share grew 0.7 market share percentage points to 32.4 per cent. In an ATV and side x side market which is now down 2.2 per cent year-to-date, Polaris has grown sales by 2.2 per cent versus the January-to-April period last year, a positive growth swing of 4.4 per cent. As a result, Polaris has grown its year-to-date market share to 31.3 per cent – a share increase of 1.3 percentage points. Boasting a range of 23 models

with Roll-Over Protection Structures (ROPS), Polaris is dominant in the growing side x side market - with 44 per cent share of the utility side x side market year-todate and 58.2 per cent share of the sport side x side market. Unlike the agricultural ATV market, which is down 3.1 per cent year-to-date, the utility side x side market in 2018 has continued to grow at the healthy rate of three per cent. Polaris also dominates the big bore ATV market, with 16 per cent sales growth in 551cc and above, a category which is down 12 per cent year-to-date – driving market to 46.8 per cent. The dominance of Polaris is particularly pronounced in Victoria, with 41.2 per cent market share in April, and 34 per cent year-to-date. “While market conditions have softened somewhat, we are buoyed by our growth and the overwhelming consumer response to our industry-leading

product range, particularly our 23 models with ROPS, Polaris Australia country manager, Alan Collins, said. “With the government set to extend its $20,000 instant asset write-off for small businesses and safety rebates continuing through WorkSafe Victoria for ATV users to transition to a side x side or Polaris ACE vehicle, we are confident that the prospects for both the Australian off-road vehicle market and Polaris as a brand look bright for the remainder of 2018. Polaris is also seeing strong growth on the back of new 2018 models including Ranger XP 1000 HD EPS and Sportsman 570 HD EPS - which have been designed and built for Australia, along with continued success of its singleseat, ROPS-equipped Polaris ACE and Polaris UTE ATV with a rear dump box. More information about Polaris Off-Road Vehicles and Polaris Engineered Accessories can be found online at polarisaustralia.com.

CONTINUED GROWTH: Polaris sales across the range continue to buck trends, by increasing each quarter.

Agri Boss supplying high quality tractors

QUALITY PRODUCT: Agri Boss tractors take great pride in selling quality tractors at an affordable price.

AGRI Boss commenced operations in Wodonga in 2004, and originally featured only three tractor models and offered a six month warranty. Today, Agri Boss has grown to include a range of 36 models - from 20HP to 220HP – and all come with a five year full factory warranty covering both parts and labour. Agri Boss has, from its inception, had a guiding principle of supplying high quality tractors to the market at affordable prices. Agri Boss currently has 31 models that retail for less than $500/HP, and the remaining five retail for less than $600/HP.

This cost ratio is some 50 per cent of mainstream brands. A number of improvements in manufacturing technology and component design, combined with a strong focus on pre-emptive quality, including FMEA (Failure Mode Engineering Analysis), has resulted in Agri Boss becoming known as a leader in terms of market quality and pricing. Current financial conditions in Australia mean that the current low interest rates will ultimately rise, and the cost of servicing debt will balloon. Wise financial advice focuses on the debt level an organisation can withstand in the harder

economic times, and no industry suffers more in terms of hard economic times than the rural sector. When necessity prevails and a farmer requires a new tractor for example, he or she should consult their accountant or financial advisor on what level of debt the business can afford to carry during the prevailing economic conditions over the proposed period of the loan. Then - and only then - should the enterprise consider the purchase of machinery that is within this debt ceiling. Agri Boss tractors cost approximately 50 per cent of many rivals, and combined with a five year full

warranty, which coincidently is the usual duration of a business loan, offer considerable savings and free-up working capital – a must for successful businesses. Agri Boss tractors represent a real opportunity for both small and large acreage holdings to substantially reduce their input costs and debt levels, and free up working capital with the added protection of the standard five year warranty. Agri Boss can be contacted on 0412 539 263, email agriboss@ bigpond.com, or alternatively visit the websites www.agribosstractors.com.au or www.tractors4sale.com.au.

WINTER WARMTH AND HEATING

Page 18, Southern Farmer

The Castleton is a modern stove with a classic look LAST month, the first of the truly autumn weather blew into Victoria. Across the state, families turned to their wood fires to provide not only heat, but comfort as rain pelted against window frames. There is no feeling quite like having a log-fire burning quietly in the room – it creates an ambience of days gone by; of slowing down and spending time with loved ones. Some 20 years ago, Castworks recognised the need for quality wood heaters to be made available for those looking for style and functionality at a reasonable price.

Castworks has grown from a small company that sold wood fires, to a respected importer and distributor of home heating products to the Australian market. Now, they are proud to present their latest imported offering – the Castleton stove. The Castleton offers everything you need in a stove, a wood fire and a family lifestyle all rolled into an attractive soapstone and cast iron package. The Castleton is designed to include the essential features to maintain a warm, comfortable home – so you can spend less time chopping wood, and

Castleton combines the superior heating qualities of soapstone with elegant and durable cast iron elements.

Each stove is a complement of cast iron and soapstone, with a large stone top, side and front panels. Hearthstone soapstone woodstoves retains twice as much heat as steel, keeping the stove within the comfort zone, extending the heat duration of every wood load. more time together with your family. Of simple and robust construction, the stove ensures reliability, reduced ash and an overall cleaner, more efficient burning experience. Best of all, the Castleton offers some of the best radiant heat properties available in the marketplace – twice as much as found in steel alternatives. DON’T let the name fool you. American barns are well suited to the Australian way. This type of barn shed allows the best of both worlds, as American barns deliver a high level of functionality and adaptability. Firstly, how do you tell them apart from the traditional local barn? Australian style barns have a single roofline. They tend to look more simple and modest than an American-style barn. They are also often smaller (but can be built at any size). But the high clearance central area of an American barn offers the option of vehicle or machinery storage possibilities and the lean-to sides can be used as workrooms, storage space or anything you choose. While these two different types of barns might sound worlds apart, they are both highly sought out options for the Australian way of life. But the American can offer some great advantages which come in very useful. American barns are extremely functional structures that offer a range of storage possibilities for your business. Essentially, there are three sheds in one, which means that there’s plenty of room for automotives, boats, horse shelters, workshops or anywhere large but secure storage is required A good benefit of American

barns is the option of having a single roller door, multiple doors or a combination of both. So, in a way, American barns give you three sheds for the price of one. This set-up can work well when built up against boundaries and height restrictions become an issue. You can also choose to have your American barn shed

divided using internal partitions or left as a large open space, American barns can be used for many applications including car garages, boat sheds, workshops, housing caravans, horse stables, storage rooms and games rooms to name a few. The list is endless. The only issue you will have is working out which combination best suits you.

You could even turn one of the sides of your American barn into an open carport, or verandah. You can also easily personalise your barn with windows and glass sliding doors. An American barn may be a bit of an extra investment in the beginning, but most owners consider it a godsend when they get used to its advantages.

Diversification key to woolly success

WOOLLY SUCCESS: IAN and Marilyn Lanyon will be at the upcoming Australian Sheep and Wool Show in Bendigo next month.

IAN and Marilyn Lanyon epitomise successful farming. Known for their award winning produce, particularly their range of green tomato products, the Lanyons have always looked for ways to diversify their farm offering. So, along with producing some 60 tonnes of tomatoes each year under the Simply Tomatoes brand, the Lanyons also breed fat lambs. Targeting the prime lamb market, Marilyn saw an opportunity for more than just meat – and embarked on producing not only her own allergy free woollen quilts, but also a range of therapeutic heat pads - made from their home-grown wool, encasing local wheat. “We’ve farmed lots of different things over the years, and we still grow cereal crops; along with green tomatoes for our other manufacturing operation, Marilyn said. “There’s never a dull moment on the farm, we can assure you. “But in all things we do, our motto is ‘take small steps, and think big’. To further compliment their offering, the Lanyons opened their Boort property to visitors looking for a genuine farm stay experience – and have since won two awards for Excellence in Food Tourism at the RACV Victorian Tourism Awards. Marilyn is more than just a farmer – she is a force in her own right. She is enthusiastic, a big believer in the benefits of community, and is always on hand to meet visitors when they arrive at the family property. “What do you get when you

Next month, from July 20, the annual Australian Sheep and Wool Show will kick off in Bendigo. Among those stall-holders will be the Lanyons – with both their Aussie Wool Quilts, and their Woolly Warmer therapeutic heat pads. The largest event of its type in the world, commonly known as the best sheep convention, the wool show is the perfect place to learn more about the Lanyons’ journey – from traditional farmers to award winning tourism and business operators. Visit Shearwell at this year’s Sheep and Wool Show

QUALITY AT AN AFFORADBLE PRICE: Shearwell’s SET Tag is available direct to farmers for 4c less than industry standard. Talk to the Shearwell team at this year’s Sheep and Wool Show.

THIS year, make sure you visit Shearwell when you get along to the Australian Sheep and Wool Show. Shearwell will be in the Technology and Careers Hub, and it is the perfect time to get a close and personal look at the outstanding products they provide to sheep producers: tags, readers and software. Always aiming to help the livestock farmer, Shearwell’s SET Tag is one to be reckoned with; a one piece, life time tag that’s designed to be either visual or

electronic, with an optional RFID chip. With a 99.5 per cent retention rate, the SET Tag is popular. Shearwell are offering their NLIS SET Tag direct at a cheaper price to Victorian farmers, 44¢ plus GST, compared to 48¢ through Ag Victoria. Made in Australia, with a wide choice of colours, including all the year colours, it’s a great choice of tag and a cheaper price; there is no reason not to go with Shearwell. Other products to be on

display during the Sheep and Wool Show include Shearwell’s RFID Reader (wand), which is quick and easy to use, reads all approved RFID tags and has Bluetooth connectivity. Just point, scan and record the animal tag numbers; then transfer the animal data to one of Shearwell’s free apps. Get the equivalent of 20¢ discount per RFID SET Tag when you buy your first Shearwell Stick Reader. This year, Shearwell will also proudly introduce their new

Race Readers; large and small versions are suitable for both sheep and cattle and can be expanded as required. They can be configured quickly and easily within an existing set-up for fast, effortless recording of RFID tags as stock run through the race. Shearwell are based in Bendigo – contact them to discuss what they can do for you, or visit them at this year’s Sheep and Wool Show. Phone 1800 998 934, or go to www.shearwell.com.au.

Sell your wool with Fergusons THERE are plenty of wool buyers out there – but very few operate like Fergusons. Ferguson Wool have been servicing producers across the state since 1870 –and today still stand by their ‘farmer first’ philosophy. In that time, they have always focused on wool buying, from large wool clips to the buying of smaller lots. In fact, many clients are so impressed with the service they have been using the Ferguson team for more than 50 years – such as John and Pam Phillips, who farm 600 sheep across 315 acres at Strathlea. Celebrating their five decades of using Ferguson in 2014, Mr Phillips said a local agent made it easier than those based in Melbourne. “We got to the stage where we found selling it to Ferguson was just as good as selling in Melbourne,” he said. “You have no freight, no commission costs, no storage or handling costs. “You have the wool tax no matter what, but for net returns, Ferguson has always been just as good as Melbourne.” Having newly moved to

new premises at the corner of Wheeler Street and New Dookie Road, Shepparton – to the rear of Feed Central - Ferguson Wool is focused on delivering the best private buying experience. Right now, they are happy to lock in clip prices, and offer four different payment options. Guaranteed Price: Guaranteed price in the shed, 14 day prompt payment. Ferguson will value your wool visually or by taking a core guidance test and will quote on a guaranteed price which is net after wool tax. Consignment: Guidance test in store. Wool growers can consign their wool to Ferguson stores and receive regular price updates. This allows Ferguson to show and market the wool to particular buyers, and allows wool growers to maximise prices and opportunities. If wool growers are not satisfied with price quotations within a specified period alternative arrangements can be made at the wool grower’s option. Fully Tested: This is the most appropriate for large

wool growers, specialists and fine wool growers. Usual visual and guidance test appraisal is eliminated for this option. A basis of either last year’s results, or an agreed basis, is used for setting a guaranteed price usually on a clean basis and subject to adjustment according to final AWTA full test results. The wool after agreement on a price basis is forwarded to their contract testing facilities, when after testing, the price is qualified in detail. Cash: For small clips and oddments, Ferguson’s will value and pay cash at the wool store. Along with wool buying, Ferguson also distributes the liquid fertiliser R.U.M. – and has done so for the last 18 years. R.U.M. is used mostly for nitrogen application to all types of crop, and is known to be good for soil biology. The team also sell a high quality rechargeable cordless shearing handpiece. To learn more about what Ferguson Wool can do for you, visit them at this year’s Bendigo Australian Sheep and Wool Show.

Five new research projects under way BY DR MARTIN AULDIST Senior Research Scientist, Agriculture Victoria, Ellinbank

A NUMBER of Agriculture Victoria researchers converged on AgriBio in Bundoora this month to hear Minister for Agriculture, Jaala Pulford, announce the DairyFeedbase initiative. This is a new research partnership between the Victorian Government and the dairy industry that will boost the productivity and profitability of dairy farms. It brings together largescale research and cuttingedge technologies to improve pasture performance, animal nutrition and the cost-competitiveness of the feedbase. The Victorian Government, Dairy Australia and the Gardiner Dairy Foundation have committed to providing a total of $54 million funding over six years. “We’re supporting our dairy industry to innovate, embrace new technology, and be more productive and profitable, Minister Pulford said. DairyFeedbase represents an unprecedented and exciting level of applied research funding for the dairy industry. But what does all this really mean? What are we going to do? The DairyFeedbase program comprises five main projects - let me give you a snap shot of each. The Pasture Smarts Project: Led by Dr Joe Jacobs at Ellinbank, aims to develop meth-

RESEARCH: Five new research projects are under way for those working with Agriculture Victoria.

We’re supporting our dairy industry to innovate, embrace new technology, and be more productive and profitable. - JAALA PULFORD , MINISTER FOR AGRICULTURE ods for growing and utilising more pasture (both grazed and conserved), simplify dayto-day management, and better manage risks around forage management. Tools will be developed for the automated assessment of pasture dry matter yield and nutritive characteristics, and to better forecast pasture performance.

These new measurement and prediction tools will be used to field test new pasture genetics, such as F1 hybrids and novel endophytes for the development of optimum agronomic packages, to optimise their performance. The Forage Value Index Futures (FVI) Project: Led by Professor Kevin Smith based at Hamilton, and aims to de-

velop better ways to evaluate pasture cultivars and ensure farmers can differentiate between cultivars. The future potential of the FVI will be realised through a better ability to trial cultivars and measure dry matter yield, persistence and nutritive characteristics. The FVI will also enable comparisons between exist-

Vale - Thomas Patrick Walsh TOM Walsh died peacefully at his home of 91 years, Railway Farm in Trentham, on April 17. A prominent and successful farmer in the areas of potatoes, prime lambs and cattle, Tom was a humble man and regarded himself as a tenant of the land he owned. After farming Tom’s passion was traditional Irish/ Australian music - some of his tunes are recorded in the National Archives. He is survived by his wife, Mary, nine children and 21 grandchildren. Tom, a long time reader of the Southern Farmer, will be greatly missed. Rest in peace.

ing cultivars and cultivars produced with new breeding methods, such as high yielding hybrids. The Smart Feeding Project: Led by myself, Martin Auldist, and focuses on the individual intake of each cow and the inherent variation in productivity of the herd, to deliver productivity gains based on improved herd dynamics.

This project will develop farm management systems that allow a more even allocation of available feed resources across a herd and an overall increase in the herd’s average milk response to feeding (ie more milk per kg of feed). This will result in milk production benefits without increasing feed costs. The Feeding Cool Cows Project: Led by Dr Leah Marett at Ellinbank, aims to develop cost effective, nutritional strategies for halving the negative impact of hot weather on dry matter intake and milk production. A range of feeding options will be investigated, including dietary additives such as fat supplements, betaine, mineral salts, feeding specific concentrate supplements, or utilising a combination of grazed and conserved forages. The First 100 Days Project: Led by Dr Bill Wales at Ellinbank and addresses the most critical period in each cow’s lactation. Knowledge of feed intake, production levels and a range of health parameters will be used to deliver effective early lactation rations for each cow. Feeding cows better during the first 100 days of lactation through more strategic use of supplementation, can increase the current herd production from 6000 L/cow per lactation to closer to the potential for cows that graze of 10,000 L/cow per lactation. I’ll be bringing you some early results from all of these projects in the coming months, so stay tuned.

HFF bi-annual conference on again THE Hydroponic Farmers Federation’s 11th biennial conference is on this month, and yet again promises all the best in industry news, production tips and on-farm visits. To be held in Preston from June 25 to 27, the conference provides a rare forum to interact with some of Australia’s leading hydroponic authorities and growers. This year, the theme is ‘the Extra 5 per cent’ – and among other things, will focus on: (l) labour management; (l) integrated pest management; (l) greenhouse light management; and (l) irrigation strategies. Every grower wants to grow better crops, make more money, spend more time with their families and reduce environmental impact, but despite the best intentions are not always successful. The 2018 HFF confer-

ence will provide delegates with key tools with which to build better businesses, while achieving some of these outcomes and gaining that extra five per cent. In addition to the conference and technical presentations, a Trade Exhibition will run concurrently, featuring Australia’s leading greenhouse and hydroponic suppliers displaying and demonstrating the latest in greenhouse products and technology. The Hydroponic Farmers’ Federation is open to all hydroponic farmers Australia wide.

The HFF grew from a small self-help group to the large association it is today through a commitment to furthering the hydroponic industry through growers supporting each other. The Australian Protected Cropping Industry currently employs over 10,000 people, and is the fastest growing food production sector in the country, with an expansion rate of around six per cent per annum. The reasons for this industry growth include faster plant growth, higher yields, improved quality, the ability to grow out of season, and exclude and control pests and weeds. Furthermore, hydroponically grown crops require only a fraction of the water required by conventionally grown crops. For further information visit the HFF’s web site at www.hff.org.au.
