Gippsland producers take food map online By DAVID PALMER

PERENNIAL FAVORITE

AN interactive online map of food producers, suppliers and retailers launched in early May, now has 50 entities showing their locations, contact information and profiles. Organised by the Leongatha based South Gippsland Shire, the food map lists beef, lamb, fruit, vegetable, wine, mushroom, honey, poultry, deer and milk producers as well as where their products are sold raw or processed in restaurants. Shire sustainability officer Chris Hamilton said she expected the businesses on the site to grow by 12 or 15 in the next 12 months and site visits to expand gradually from the 350 or so recorded each month currently. As visitor numbers grow, an already established star system to record consumer satisfaction with a site’s produce will expand via Twitter and become more meaningful. Ms Hamilton said the site started when the shire brought together all the local food producers it knew of and floated the idea of the website, www. southgippslandfoodmap.com. au, to help them expand their marketing. “There were similar food maps established through local government areas up and down the east coast, but the

South Gippsland one was the first to start uploading video and multimedia content about individuals,” she said. Ms Hamilton said quite a number of producers and others said they just were not computer literate enough to upload material to the site. However, she said shire staff were available to help them transition their presence onto the site. Ms Hamilton said she was surprised by the variety of producers and retailers of whom she previously knew nothing turning up on the food map. A couple were free range egg producers with farms near her home and a Leongatha butcher who sells only locally produced meat but did not promote that backbone of his business. “Without the map they would have remained much less well known,” she said. Even a Toora community pear orchard with more than 100 pear varieties had remained quite low profile until the advent of the interactive map, despite having community pruning and picking days. The Wellington and East Gippsland shires were reported to be investigating food maps in their areas too. Their stated aim was to reconnect consumers with local food, restaurants with fresh food and generally encourage buying locally.

Heathcote ZLQV À RRG risk plan IXQGLQJ THE Victorian and Federal governments will provide $230,000 to help Heathcote better understand and plan for future floods. The Australian Government will provide $29,900 of that through the Natural Disaster Resilience Grants Scheme (NDRGS). The North Central Catchment Management Authority will manage the study with support from the City of Greater Bendigo, and the two organisations will also work with the community to ensure they capture local knowledge of past floods. Victorian minister for water Peter Walsh said the money was part of a $4.2m investment in floodrelated projects for 2014. Essentially updated flood mapping will give the Heathcote community a better understanding of its flood risk and the findings will also be used to improve land use planning, flood emergency planning and response, and community preparation for floods. A local steering committee will be established to lead the projects, and Heathcote locals will also be asked to share their local knowledge and to help verify flood maps.” This project is one of 22 flood related projects approved through the NDRGS in 2013-14.

A ROBOT developed by the Australian Centre for Field Robotics at the University of Sydney now has an arm, by which it is able to touch crops to take measurements, control drip herbicide or pesticide deployment and even potentially remove weeds mechanically. Centre research and innovation director Salah Sukkarieh said at the AusVeg recent annual conference that his team wanted to focus on sustainability in its broad sense. “So we created a robot that uses batteries and solar power, and equipped it with an arm, he said. “It provides precision crop and soil information for most vegetable crops.

GIPPSLAND food exporters need halal information and training to capitalise on south-east Asian markets, according to a report from the latest Victorian Super Trade Mission. Agribusiness Gippsland director Alex Arbuthnot, newly returned from an ASEAN mission, also suggested there was an opportunity for the UHT milk market, including small packs for the hotel and resort market. “This would help grow the coffee drinking market and provide a real boost to milk sales,â€? he said. He suggested that members of the Victorian Agribusiness Council – (Agribusiness Gippsland is one) – should focus on introducing small to medium-sized food ďŹ rms to potential export clients. Agribusiness Gippsland has already been active in export development with Mr Arbuthnot and chair Paul Ford both having joined recent ministerial trade missions to southeast Asia and China. “As a result of those visits we staged wellattended forums on halal food exports at Lardner Park and exporting to China, held at Morwell,â€? Mr Ford said. “We also hosted a group of top chefs from Kuala Lumpur visiting West Gippsland for two days. “This has highlighted the opportunity to establish a formal mentoring service for future food export leaders,â€? he added. “It is a major project we are seeking to get established.â€?

By DAVID PALMER WITH Ballarat potato processor McCain’s continuing to cancel growers’ contracts and squeeze prices, there is increasing interest around the Western District city in two other Tasmanian ‘P’ crops: pyrethrum and poppies. Producing and expanding in the district for the past five years, there are now about 1600 hectares growing perennial pyrethrum established within 50 kilometres of the city. Poppies though are still only being quietly trialled on back roads because of security concerns as the crop stages its first break out from its bastion of security in Tasmania. The whole pyrethrum crop is exported for use in spray cans of domestic pest control products. During a field trip staged by the Grasslands Society of Southern Australia annual conference at Ballarat in mid June, attendees had a chance to assess pyrethrum on Graham Britt’s farm at Dunnstown, about 15km south east of Ballarat. A long time potato grower Mr Britt had last grown potatoes on the inspected paddock in 2008 and they were followed by a fodder crop and then Tonic plantain for a couple of years before being sown to pyrethrum at 1.5kg/ha in September 2010. Since then it has been harvested three times and early this year achieved the fifth highest yield in Australia.

COMPANY MAN: Allan Reid explains how he joined Tasmanian company Botanical Resources Australia in 2009 and helped establish pyrethrum as a viable crop around Ballarat. Beside him is this crop’s owner and Central Highlands pyrethrum pioneer Graham Britt.

Tasmania based Botanical Resources Australia Ballarat area manager for five years Allan Reid told the tourists his company had established the industry in the area in 2009. “We came to Ballarat because its climate is similar to the Australian home for pyrethrum on Tasmania’s north west coast; we like to piggyback on people growing spuds because the soil requirements are similar.” Further expansion looked likely around Koroit near Warrnambool for that reason, he said.

But because potato growers get a return from that crop in six months, an 18 month wait for the first return from pyrethrum might have initially discouraged growers from taking on the crop. To alleviate that wait, BRA offered joint ventures and paid many of the initial costs to the first tranche of pyrethrum growers. Mr Reid said, “That was one way of being able to say to the growers we’re serious about being here. “Now we’ve changed our model slightly so that

new growers enter a stand alone contract but get paid more.” He said in an ideal world there would be three harvests from the crop before most farmers took their paddocks back to pasture or potatoes. Mr Reid was initially quite evasive, to the annoyance of some visitors, about the prices BRA pays for pyrethrum. Eventually he suggested the return was roughly equivalent to a potato yield of about 50t/ha at the current McCain’s contract price of $260 a tonne.

Increasingly that is more attractive than growing potatoes on land in the area that has been selling for more than $30,000 a hectare in some cases. But pyrethrum yields are quite tiny compared with most broadacre crops; in the first year the top Ballarat district yield was 63kg/ha. Mr Reid said longer term an average yield would be about 70kg/ha. BRA spent about $2.8m setting up a pelletising plant in Ballarat to handle the area’s pyrethrum. Continued page 5

DUNNSTOWN DIRT: Grassland Society members took time off from their annual conference in Ballarat to inspect this pyrethrum crop at nearby Dunnstown. From page 4

It pelletises the seed with a binder at the rate of up to 3t/h before the pellets are shipped to BRA’s headquarters at Ulverstone, Tasmania for further processing. For sowing BRA utilises Nathan Lancashire, a local seeding contractor who uses a 6m wide press wheel drill and sows about 3ha in August and September. Fertiliser required was usually 250kg/ha of super plus 2.5t/ha of lime. Initial seedbeds were too fine and they tended to get too compacted which

harmed germination. “Now the seedbeds are very similar to one you’d prepare for wheat and we’re getting the desired plant density of about 40 plants per square metre,” Mr Reid said. In some cases three waterings of about 10 to 15mm each were needed to germinate the pyrethrum, although Mr Britt said he hadn’t needed to do that. Problem weeds are hemlock, carrot weed, sorrel, thistles and remnant potatoes of which thistles required hand weeding and potatoes a decent frost.

Appropriate herbicides handled the rest. Slugs are proving a particular problem this year and some growers have applied Slugoff three times already. Mr Britt had made only one application of Slugoff although he will do another. The plants flower adequately the first time 14 months later in the following November and at that stage usually need a 20 to 25mm irrigation. That is to get flowers to set properly and establish more oil in the buds, Mr Reid said.

St Leger Machinery

Mr Britt, like most district potato growers has a substantial gully dam he can draw on for his travelling irrigator to do that. The crops are harvested with mower/windrowers in January and after about 10 days standard headers extract the tiny, oily seeds.

Dairy farm factories falter WE convert raw materials (feed) by value adding it through the manufacturing plant (our cow) to a marketable commodity (milk). Our cows have incredible potential to do this and make us (the manufacturer) a good proďŹ t. Like any manufacturer, how we manage this process will have very signiďŹ cant impact on proďŹ tability. The cultural belief that all farms operate at the same level of efďŹ ciency could not be further from the truth. That only farm size or

By JOHN LYNE Dairytech dairy production specialist cow numbers produces proďŹ t variations is simply not correct. Monthly calculation of feed cost/L of my client’s farms over the past year produced some alarming variations, and their cause. As a general description; the higher the nutrient density of the ration (energy/ protein), the higher the milk solids produced, and lower the feed cost/L (or kg of solids). The higher the income, the lower the ďŹ xed maintenance cost of the cow (energy expended to keep the cow alive) as a percentage of total energy intake. Earlier this year saw feed cost/L variations from 18 to 36c in the same month due to ration differences, but mostly nutrient (energy/protein) intake differences. And to make matters worse, the lower feed cost herds were

producing more L/ solids/cow/day. Our materials are either produced ‘inhouse’ (pasture, crops), or bought-in (grain, hay and other ingredients – minerals etc). To ensure we can operate at capacity at any given time, a materials inventory or feed budget is essential. In July each year we construct one for the coming 12 months, based on a feed budget post-mortem, a collation of monthly ration analysis for the past year. It not only highlights feed shortages over the last year, but also nutrient density failures. These two, feed required by our predetermined manufacturing capacity (cow number), and nutrient density (quality) have a synergetic impact on milk solids produced, and as above, very large variations in proďŹ t which will not be known unless these calculations are done. There is no accounting for proďŹ t not made. This should be our obsession rather than simply the broad

category of unqualiďŹ ed costs. Calculating the total tonnage of feed required is relatively simple. From there we must look at ration nutrient densities to ensure we achieve good conversion efďŹ ciency. I hasten to add, as a general rule, the higher the quality of the feed the greater will be the voluntary intake with obvious consequences to milk solids produced. Close on the heels of nutrient density is correct balance of nutrients (energy/ďŹ bre/ protein) for cow health. There is no high feed conversion efďŹ ciency in unhealthy rumens which without fail manifest into unhealthy cows. No dairyperson is unfamiliar with acidosis and its cascade of subsequent health issues. As manufacturing machinery loses efďŹ ciency with time, so too our cows as days-inmilk increase. Cows convert feed to milk far more efďŹ ciently in early lactation than mid or late lactation. In seasonal calving scenarios, autumn particularly, we have a double negative impact

on feed conversion efďŹ ciency. As a cow’s capacity to convert feed to milk solids decreases with stage of lactation, there is most commonly a decrease in feed quality into summer. We regularly see production drop 10L/ cow from Christmas to the end of January and continue a downward trend to dry off. From a proďŹ t perspective, this could not happen at a worse time as milk price escalates from this time onward. In dryland southern Victoria pasture disappears rapidly at this time being replaced by lower energy dense and higher ďŹ bre silage. Intake decreases with higher ďŹ bre/slower digesting silage, but also lower energy density. We suddenly have a negative multiplier effect on total energy intake precipitating the rapid litre drop. Milk solids percentage will increase at this time, but never to compensate the milk volume decrease. Total milk solids drop signiďŹ cantly. „ Continued page 7

in summer From page 6

All too frequently the response to falling litres is a reduction in grain feeding. Grain is a high energy dense feed of very low fibre (NDF). It is the first place to go to sustain feed conversion efficiency, production and profit. It can fortify a nutrient decreasing ration very profitably. The second approach to sustain energy/protein intake through summer/ autumn is turnips. Turnips have similar feed value to wheat, and if done well, are far cheaper than wheat, and a forage rather than a grain (forage/grain ratio). In recent years we have seen a growing number of clients irrigating turnips with effluent pond water. We can guarantee high yields and insulate production against dry seasons.

We regularly weigh off 8t DM/ha crops after three 25mm waterings over the eight week growing period, which is often more than the paddock grew in the previous year of pasture. Summer rations very often are low in protein too. Insufficient protein has a double negative impact too. Firstly cows become lethargic and forage less reducing intake, but energy then becomes necessary to be utilised by inefficient conversion to microbial protein in the rumen to meet the cow’s needs for protein. If cows are in late gestation, their demand for protein increases significantly as the growing calf is fed mostly protein. Ballarat farm unveils freeTHE EFFECTIVE & PROVEN ANIMAL & BIRD REPELLENT YOU CAN RELY ON

A 6700 square metre, or two thirds of a hectare, shed to potentially house and milk 500 Friesian cows has in only a month or two transformed a Bungaree farm. AJ Trigg and Sons imported the shed from China with the aim of keeping cattle off wet paddocks during winter and boosting pasture production on their 800ha farm about a dozen kilometres south east of Ballarat. Fifth generation Trigg farmer in the business Tony Trigg said that in only a matter of weeks of the 300 strong herd moving into the shed, “we have already seen a lot more pasture growthâ€?. “You can grow up to 20 per cent more dry matter if you keep the stock off the paddocks although in saying that we had an awesome autumnâ€?. The barn has been introduced too due to difďŹ culty in ďŹ nding people to milk year-round – eight robotic milkers will be installed next year - and to protect the herd from cold winters and hot summers. “The cold weather in the winter knocks the cows and then the heat in summer does the same,â€? Mr Trigg said. The 160 by 42m barn and a pasture rotation system that gets the best out of the land for both the dairy enterprise and a signiďŹ cant certiďŹ ed seed potato business, was on show when the Grassland Society of Southern Australia toured the farm in mid June. Mr Trigg manages the potato part of the 800ha family farm business which also involves his father John, two uncles Rob and Ron, a cousin Mark, dairy manager David Lee, and three full-time staff Pete McAdam, Elisha Hunt and Daniel Ryan. The Triggs travelled to Europe and South America to inspect similar barn systems. “It’s the way of the future I think but it’s something relatively new in Australia,â€? he said. Designed to a European standard but made a bit bigger because the Europeans have smaller animals, the Trigg family sourced the shed from China. According to Mark Trigg, “We couldn’t buy the steel here for what the whole shed cost erected “The quality is not the same as Australian steel but at the end of the day it is not going to fall over,â€? he said. The Triggs started building the

shed about two and a half years ago and noticed, thanks to substantial foam insulation in the roof, that it was at least 10 degrees cooler in summer when outside temperatures were reaching 35 degrees. At the other end of the temperature scale, the only likely addition to be made to the shed might be a curtain on the south wall to contain a bit more heat in winter. The Triggs poured close to 1300 cubic metres of concrete to form the oor including bases for eight robotic milking machines to be installed next year. It included a large silage pit too. Mark Trigg said current thinking in Europe, where they studied cow stall shedding, was that robotic milkers are conventional these days. On top of the concrete are stalls equipped with foam mattresses with rubber on top. As Mark said, “a cow feels the same amount of discomfort as we do when we drop onto our knees on concreteâ€?. The Triggs tried straw for bedding initially but found they were going through 12 to 14 big bales a week to keep the cows dry and clean. “It’s an option but it is a lot more work because we ended up with nearly a two foot layer of straw and manure which was tough to remove.â€? The stalls are just long enough so that manure mostly falls clear of the cows into a slightly depressed alley installed with scrapers which operate regularly and automatically to deposit it in tanks at the ends of the shed. The Triggs use a recently acquired second hand trailed tanker equipped with a vacuum pump, to extract

the efuent before spreading it on pasture and potato paddocks. David Lee, one of the partners in the business, started as an apprentice with the Triggs 20 years ago and now runs the dairy. He said the 235 cows they were milking now – they had hit 350 head before they recently started seasonally drying them off -were producing about 30L a head, “but have dropped a bit since we put them in the shed. At the time when Southern Farmer visited, the cows were in two herds: the cows that laid down and those that did not. The ones that didn’t lie down in the shed were still going onto grass for a part of the day so they didn’t get too foot sore. “But they are not ighty like they used to be because we are spending more time with them as we clean the beds twice a day and sprinkle lime over the top and do other work there,â€? Mr Lee said. He said the herd mostly was now so content with the shed, feed, water and bedding that “they don’t want to go into the paddocksâ€?. „ Continued page 9

to 24kg of clamped silage to refusal. All fodder for the cows now will be cut in spring and stored in silage pits. “We get six weeks of spring growth and that’s about it - we get a bit of autumn growth but very little over winter production because it’s too cold,” Tony Trigg said. He said potatoes and cows might be an unusual mix but had proven to be a good combination with paddocks being rotated between potatoes and dairy pastures. While there are less than 20 dairy farms in the Ballarat region, Mr Trigg says it is an ideal area for the industry. “We grow seed potatoes and have a five or six year rotation. “We generally go to Italian ryegrass for three years – we are going down the track of Italians and hybrids because we know how much we can get out of them - then maybe drill in another Italian for another three years and then go back into spuds. “If we have a spare centre pivot or spare water we might put in an annual ryegrass and take it off as silage in spring and then sow lucerne.” The farm has had good results sowing Italian ryegrass into lucerne stands after about three years, and also plans to introduce some cereal and canola-based crops to the mix. Mr Trigg said the effect on pasture of it not being grazed now the cows are shedded, would involve“a fair bit of suck it and see.”

Hay smart phone app measures up THE Australian Fodder Industry Association’s national conference in Adelaide on August 5 will unveil a phone app to allow hay-making contractors and regular hay producers to assess the quality of their products and market them promptly to a wider audience. By using the Feed Central-developed app at the launch, contractors and growers will be able to become accredited Feed Central assessors on the day. Feed Central’s quality assurance and supply manager Ian Wickham said the company was rolling out the program to accredit contractors and growers to do first round quality assessment and to list hay directly with Feed Central, starting with the 2014/15 hay season. “It’s a great leap forward

for the whole fodder industry, Mr Wickham said. “There is no national grading system and in the absence of national standards the app helps standardise assessments and gives buyers greater confidence to buy more hay sight unseen, while still allowing growers and contractors to market this product through their own channels, he said. “Growers and contractors will be able to get their product online and available to sell much quicker. “With Feed Central’s unmatched turnaround time of 24 hours, by answering a few simple questions sellers of fodder have a chance to sell to the domestic database of more than 15,000 buyers within a few days. Mr Wickham said the app would fit in well for

those wanting a feed test. “Buyers are demanding more information on hay before they buy and it’s not just feed test they need to know about, he said. Quality assurance is protected in the process. The hay will feature a stamped quality statement to establish if it is assessed by a Feed Central assessor or a selfassessment. Growers can still have a Feed Central assessor visit their properties. The assessors will also use the new technology, reducing reliance on a paper-based system.

The new technology was developed in-house by Feed Central and was built with ease of use for both user and buyer in mind. “We want to ask simple questions about the product in an easy format, everyone has their phone handy when trying to sell product so this was an obvious extension, Mr Wickham said. “Growers will be able to do it themselves; it’s not a difficult process but it has benefits of getting product marketed more effectively and still with all the right information wanted by decision-makers.

Grassland Society whales in president THE Grassland Society of Southern Australia has elected south-west Victorian farm business and livestock production consultant James Whale its new president. Mr Whale, 33, a consultant with Ballarat based Mike Stephens andAssociates, hopes to push the society’s membership from just over 500 to 600 and to reactivate some branches that have been in a lull. He was instrumental in reviving the Western District branch and hopes to repeat that success in others. Mr Whale grew up on a sheep property and completed a degree in agricultural science at the University of Melbourne, worked for the Department of Primary Industries as a sheep and wool development officer and managed a fine wool Merino property in New South Wales before moving four years ago to his current role based in Hamilton. “Some of the branches are strong, some need a helping hand, and one of our main roles in the central committee is to make sure we’re providing what those branches need to run activities,” Mr Whale said. The society is on a strong footing and has grown its membership base over recent years. It will now try to capture the attention of younger producers, particularly those in beef and sheep industries. “We’d like to show them how they can benefit from being in the society,” Mr Whale said. “The technical information on pasture production is fantastic and they would also benefit from the social and networking

opportunities. “Sheep and beef producers alike make a living out of growing grass and the society brings together top quality people and information to help them improve.” He was elected unopposed to replace Marney Jones as president at the 2014 society annual conference in Ballarat. The society fulfils a unique role in bringing together researchers, producers and agronomists to share ideas and information. Formed in 1959, it has branches in South Australia, Tasmania, southern New South Wales and five in Victoria.

Aussie Pumps boots new design AUSTRALIAN Pump Industries (Aussie Pumps) has expanded its range of personal protection equipment to now include professionally designed boots that can be used in harsh environments. The Aussie Jet-Stop boots are specifically designed for use with high pressure blasters of up to 500 Bar (7300 psi). According to Aussie Pumps’ high pressure safety trainer Hamish Lorenz, there has been a gap in the market for comfortable, practical footwear capable of withstanding accidental jetting from pressure cleaners. “Operators have been using steel toe-cap gum boots until now. “Toes are protected, however, the high pressure water jets can slice open a rubber boot. “Water sprayed under pressure penetrates flesh and can carry dangerous bacteria or poisons. “This can result in horrible infections leading to amputation or even death,” Mr Lorenz said. He added that high pressure, protective footwear has been available for a number of years, however, it can be cumbersome and difficult to walk in,

and it is impractical for operators of lower pressure machines that need mobility. The new Aussie Jet-Stop boots are made from vulcanised rubber, providing safe, waterproof comfort for the operator. For maximum user protection the boots come with steel toecaps and steel inserts in the sole to prevent puncturing by sharp objects. The boots are color coded to identify the areas of protection – the black region covers the talus, the lower shin, toes and heals. They are also CE certified as suitable for use with rotating water jet nozzle or flat angle nozzle sprays of up to 500 Bar. The soles of the boots are designed for excellent grip to reduce the risk of slipping, particularly in icy conditions. The boots can also be fitted with spikes and have an adjustable strap to ensure ease of taking on and off. Aussie Pumps offers full range of personal safety equipment including jackets, trousers, overalls, aprons and gloves. For more information visit www. aussiepumps.com.au.

1HZ :RRUL <DOORFN PLOOLRQ ¿ UH VWDWLRQ ERRVWV YDOOH\ FDSDFLW\ THE capacity of the Country Fire Authority in the Yarra Valley has been boosted with the opening of a new $1.56m Hillcrest fire station and regional headquarters at Woori Yallock. Minister for Police and Emergency Services and Bushfire Response Kim Wells said the station had been funded

through the Rural Fire Station project and was an investment in community safety. “This is a significant upgrade for the brigade, which attends around 150 callouts per year, with the building providing enough space to house a forward control vehicle as well as Hillcrest’s appliances,” the minister said.

“It also features a 70,000-litre water tank, which reflects the brigade’s commitment to reduce its environmental impact, and incorporates the headquarters for the Yarra Valley Group of 11 brigades, providing a modern and safe base.” Mr Wells was joined at the official opening by Brad Battin (MLA,

Gembrook) and Cindy McLeish (MLA, Seymour). “This upgrade is a substantial commitment to the emergency services infrastructure of the local community and provides facilities that will enable the brigade to grow with the community as the Yarra Valley area continues to

expand,” Mr Battin said. Mr Wells said the Victorian government had invested more than $125 million in the past three years to fulfil its commitment to build 250 new or upgraded CFA stations. A recent announcement was the purchase of 78 new CFA vehicles for about $29 million.

ad smells coming from your septic system are a good indicator that something is not right. Not only are smells unpleasant and embarrassing, but they could be a clear sign that things are soon going to get worse. Your septic system is the digestive system in your back yard. It relies on naturally occurring, good bacteria to break down all the waste and grease that you flush away. The wrong type of bacteria or too few good bacteria in your system, leads to smells, clogged drains, overflowing septics and blocked absorption trenches. Families have been relying on Australian made Ecocare Activator for years. This Quality Assured product will clean, clear and condition everything from kitchen

Healthy eating advice for your septic system. sinks to drains, relegating smells and blockages to the history books. “I have been using your product for over a decade. During that period I have had no occasion to use the services of a plumber. Drains run freely, never is there an offensive odour and the septic system works perfectly,” commented V. Wright from New South Wales. One product – multiple uses. But it doesn’t stop with what you can see. As you flush it down the drain it continues to work unseen within the confines of your septic system. Restoring the natural balance of good bacteria and keeping smells and blockages away naturally.

Swap septic system smells for smiles! “With most of our plumbing set under a concrete slab, it really gives us peace of mind.” (Lyndall Sleep, Victoria)

n unpleasant smell is often the first sign that you have a problem with your septic system. But once the smell is there, the problem is already in place. Ecocare Activator, trusted for decades by families across Australia, is your one-stop solution to septic system woes. Ken and Glenise Outch, from Victoria, have been using Ecocare Activator for many years. This is what they had to say, “The product itself is fantastic. We use it around the house for all the cleaning and in turn it is constantly keeping our bacterial level in the septic system at optimal levels. It is also removing the need to use any harmful chemical cleaners which can kill off the system. “Thank you again for your product and the great service you provide…we always know you are only a free phone call away!” Used as an all over cleaner for the house, it is then simply flushed down

the drain or toilet where it continues to work within your pipes to clear blockages and condition your system. No need for expensive maintenance, no need to call out the plumber (and certainly no need to replace the system!).

ever used…The best product and the only one in my house for cleaning!” said Debbie Godfry from Queensland. “I purchased Activator as I had a problem with odour; a build up of fats; blockages in my seepage drains and wetness at the surface of my trench.

…it is keeping our costs low by saving on regular pump outs and having to get a plumber out to remove blockages and/or replace the system…we also don’t have the cupboard full of all different types of cleaners. Thank you again…” (Ken and Glenise Outch, Victoria) “We use it in the drains (toilet, shower, spa etc) and it has been great. I have even used it on my stainless steel oven, stove, sinks, benches, laminated benches and they have come up cleaner than any other product I have

Healthy, happy and odour free in 3 easy steps Ecocare Activator is the one product you can rely on to cut your cleaning time down to the bare minimum and keep your house, septic system and Aerated Wastewater Treatment System (AWTS) clean and healthy. “I have recommended Ecocare Activator regularly and have seen even the most neglected system turned around… within as little as one month,” said Senior Service Technician Michael Goddard from Wastewater Consultants Pty Ltd. Use to clean all hard surfaces and kill odours on contact, then simply rinse your surfaces and pour any remaining mixture straight down the drain. As it moves into your septic system it continues working, clearing blockages and conditioning your system. You do the first part, leave it to do the rest.

Expert advice that won’t leave you stranded Competent, experienced and highly knowledgeable in our field of expertise, we are also friendly and down-toearth and here to make your life easier. Ecocare Activator will solve your wastewater problems and prevent them coming back. Read what Michelle Lavinge from Victoria had to say about our service:

“I had been told by 3 plumbers there was nothing they could do to help me with the terrible odour…Your team worked with me over several months to clean out the waste through the various areas of the house… Thank you for all the times you called me to check and confirm how our problem was going – I didn’t have to call you. Fantastic work – it’s rare to see such great customer service when things get tough. “I would like to thank you for the friendly service, after sales support and excellent result I have received from your company and product Ecocare Activator. Our extremely unpleasant experience with this terrible odour from the drains and septic is now over and we couldn’t be more relieved.”

of Activator... I am recommending Activator to all my neighbours, and would be happy to speak to anyone who has queries about how well Activator works,” said Russell Marsh from New South Wales. Serrated tussock falls victim to granule control THE most effective and efficient control option for controlling larger areas of serrated tussock is with agricultural aeroplanes. Granular Products Pty Ltd specialises in economical aerial campaign management for applying its light and dense GP Flupropanate granules to control the weed.

As GP Flupropanate was designed for aerial application, it was specifically developed to be lightweight, while providing coverage. The surface area ratio of 15kg/ha provides an equivalent coverage to 80L/ha, thus allowing the same volume of product to cover about five times more than its liquid

GP’s sales manager Hamish Munro said individuals and groups who could act as one in a buying group save substantial aircraft ferry costs and if a reasonable sized campaign can be coordinated, then application prices could drop substantially to be comparable with other application techniques.

alternative. The age-old adage of work smarter not harder is always the key to maximising any weed control program, Mr Munro said. “With the current constraints of time, labor and money, the invasive nature of weeds like serrated tussock, makes herbicide selec-

tion and the management process critical to getting the job done.” Granular GP Flupropanate provides many convenience options over traditional liquid hose and reel methods because operators are able to apply the granules dry and not get wet or exposed to the chemical residues.

“Calculating the required amount of a day’s spray mix is always hard and tank mixes sometimes can be left splashing around in a tank on a vehicle until the next time it’s needed.” But granules can easily be lidded and stored without mess or tying up space on a ute.

Rockbank wins Merino pair Top national honor to Victorian heartlands stud By DAVID RIZZOLI

SIRE POWER: Shane Baker, Booloola White Suffolks, Baringhup and judge Craig Mitchell with Booloola’s supreme White Suffolk exhibit at the 2014 Show.

TOP honor in the form of the national merino pair of the year at the 2014 Australian Sheep Breeders Association Sheep and Wool Show at Bendigo went to John Crawford’s Rockbank Merino stud, Victoria Valley in the heart of the Grampians. Rockbank had previously defeated the Walton family’s Wurrook Merino stud, Rokewood, to take Victorian Merino pair of the year and the honor of representing Victoria in the national decider. Rockbank also won Victorian ewe of the year. The prestigious title of 2014 supreme Merino exhibit was won by the Rayner family’s Grathlyn Merino stud, Mudgee, NSW. The Merino was the feature breed of the show with breeders from every state represented including 24 studs, which made the long

trip across the Nullabor. A number of studs from the Southern Farmer region were represented in this year’s show and competed with distinction. One of the most successful was Shane Baker and his Booloola White Suffolks from Baringhup near Castlemaine which won supreme and grand champion ram and grand champion ewe awards. He entered 14 sheep in seven classes to win four first and two third ribbons. Mr Baker who was “ecstatic” with his showing said there were 130 White Suffolk entries judged by Craig Mitchell, Gemini White Suffolk stud, Werneth. Other wins of note were the following. Merinos Champion ultra fine unhoused ram (any age) Mac and John Barty, Beverley, Redesdale; champion ultrafine ewe (any age), Phil and Kim Hartwich, Mount Challicum, Ballyrogan;

champion ultrafine open ewe, Beverley; champion superfine unhoused ram, Graeme Harvey, Poplars, Murgheboluc. Reserve champion unhoused ram, Beverley; champion restricted superfine ewe, Glen Brothers, Wattlebank, Guildford; reserve champion unhoused fine wool ram, Poplars; champion restricted fine wool ram, Wattlebank; champion steward’s fine wool ewe, Poplars; champion open fine wool ram, Norm and Ryan Weir, Kerrlyn, Dunluce. There were 24 other breeds represented at the show and among the successes of Southern Farmer breeders were: Corriedale Junior champion ram, Jim and Brenda Venters, Liberton, Stonehaven; junior champion and grand champion ewe, Ellis family, Sweetfield, Mount Moriac; senior champion ewe, Liberton; reserve senior champion

ewe, Flinders Christian College, Tyabb; reserve junior champion ewe, Peter and Marie Baker, Loddon Park, Baringhup; champion shorn sheep, Sweetfield. Polwarth Senior champion ram, Geoff Kemp, Homeleigh, Heathcote; reserve senior champion ram, Homeleigh; junior champion ram, Fairview Corriedales; junior champion ewe, Fairview; reserve junior champion ewe, Fairview; champion Victorian ewe, Fairview; champion Victorian ram, Homeleigh. White Suffolk Supreme and grand champion ram, Shane Baker, Booloola, Baringhup. Not all results were immediately available at the close of the show. Those not included in this edition will be published in the next together with results from the Ballarat Sheep and Alpaca Show and the Hamilton and Western District Show.
