GRDC says herbicide resistance neglected By DAVID PALMER
SLOW ROAST: When Alan and Lizette Snaith decided to barbecue a 70 kilogram forequarter from
one of their Warialda Belted Galloways a deciding factor was being able to call on a devoted following of their farmers’ market customers to help them to eat it. Bookings for the Argentine-style asado cook-out closed about a month before the mid-August event and about 60 customers arrived on the Snaiths’ Clonbinane farm on the day. They were not disappointed. Here Alan Snaith comes to grips with 12 hour barbecued forequarter before reducing it to edible pieces. See full story page 8.

GRAINS Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) believes that weed management and herbicide resistance has been neglected in Victoria. “Everywhere in Victoria has herbicide resistance to lots of groups of herbicides,” Chris Preston, chairman of the Australian glyphosate sustainability working group, has told a herbicide-resistance seminar for Victorian agronomists in Bendigo. “We started with glyphosate resistance – the world’s first case of glyphosate resistance was at Echuca in 1996 – but now we have paraquat resistance, too,” he said. In general terms Dr Preston was talking about winter crops but many other crops are also affected. “Everywhere you go milk thistle is resistant to A and B herbicides, cape weed is resistant in southern Victoria and we even have stinging nettles in celery resistant to herbicides in southern Victoria,” said the associate professor of weed management in the University of Adelaide school of agriculture, food and wine. As the name of the sustainability group suggests, chemical companies such as Monsanto, Nufarm, Dow and Syngenta are closely allied with it. “Bayer is coming on board after a hiatus,” Dr Preston said. Glyphosate resistance was first docu-
mented in Victoria in 1996 in annual ryegrass. As part of the new focus on the state’s weeds a crew led by Dr Preston will return to southern Victoria to look for resistant weeds. “We’ll be back surveying and collecting herbicide resistant weeds in the southern region, that is south of the Western Highway this summer, probably in the first week of January 2015,” he said. Australian Herbicide Resistance Initiative communications leader Peter Newman said recently that too many Australian farmers were allowing “world champion (herbicide resistant) weeds” – annual ryegrass and wild radish – to become well established in continuously cropped paddocks, making contributions each season to the seed bank. Mr Newman said that to be farming in the future it was essential to incorporate integrated weed management into every-day farming practice. Change was urgently needed across all regions. “Integrated weed management adds another layer of complexity to the farming system and can be a pain,” he said. But Australian farmers had a reputation for innovation and problem-solving and were no longer relying on herbicides alone. Mr Newman urged every crop grower relying on herbicides to employ WeedSmart, a 10-point plan to battle against herbicide resistance.

Interest knows no border $28,000 created headlines, it is the commercial sector focus that the Prentice family’s Poll Dorset and White Suffolk stud’s success is built on at Ariah Park. The development of Kurralea’s type was built on having a bigger framed sheep with a maturity pattern that enabled all commercial market weights to be targeted by clients. The difficulty was to build rapid early growth
and muscling into this frame type, as there are negative correlations involved. Genetic outriders needed to be identified and then used astutely to bring in the consistency producers need. The same principles have been used in both their Poll Dorsets and White Suffolks. Widespread client endorsement is the best evidence of their success
in achieving this. James Osborn, manager of the ‘Barratta’ and ‘Zara’ properties AF&A Ltd is a big supporter of Kurralea genetics. The company uses rams from both breeds to mate with approximately 17,000 ewes each year on all its Hay Plains’ properties. “The reason we shop at Kurralea is the quality of the draft and the large selection of choices; there
are very few places where you can get the numbers of that quality, plus they are fantastic people to deal with.” AF&A targets the 2124kg carcase weight for Woolworths and in good years 70 per cent will achieve that, with the balance going as store lambs. AF&A aims to turn a majority of lambs off in four months. Store buyers line up to get their bigger drafts of store lambs.

Gippsland farms appreciate with top index performance The 44,268 transactions, totalling 5.8m ha, generated sales of $15.2b; the index removed sales under 30ha. The report found 10 per cent of rural land sales were between family members, although East Gippsland, at 7.9 per cent, was the state’s lowest in this category. The index found three distinct trends in the past 23 years. Between 1990-2000, farmland values were stagnant, with capitalised annual growth of 1.8 per cent. From 2000, values rose rapidly over the next eight years to a peak in 2008. The capitalised annual growth rate was 11.6 per cent.

WEST and South Gippsland farms are Victoria’s top performers in land value appreciation, according to the latest index by Rural Finance. Farms in the regions averaged annual growth rate of 4.96 to 20 per cent above the index’s average performance. The region saw 5603 farm sales totalling $2431m and the median parcel size was 52ha. Victoria’s next-highest growth was 4.85 per cent in the Western District. The Victorian Farmland Values Index 2013 tracked the results of almost 45,000 land sales across Victoria since 1990.

Unique approach to enterprise By RALPH COTTER Department of Environment and Primary Industries
LIKE many Western District properties, 1215-hectare Murnong – midway between Inverleigh and Winchel-
sea – has a mix of farm enterprises. But as visitors heard during an open day at the farm on July 29, the types of enterprises and the way they are integrated is unique. Cropping is the primary one with roughly 900ha sown to canola, wheat, barley, oats, lucerne and pulses. On the animal side there is an intensive prime lamb flock consisting of 900 composite ewes run on 200ha and a 320 sow free range piggery. Farm manager Josh Walter said it was a really happy mix of enterprises that complemented each other. “Pig manures spread over cropping paddocks, lambs get the grain leftover from seed cleaning and a lot of straw is needed for the piggery,” he said. Cropping Mr Walter described Murnong Farms as embracing a minimum-till

system with inter-row sowing and semi-controlled traffic, being highly adaptable to the high rainfall zone. “We are not a true controlled traffic (enterprise) because the header is not on the same tracks; we don’t over capitalise on machinery and have about half the equipment of similar farms. “A John Deere 7930 tractor does just about everything with a smaller 6520 used to spray crops if the main one is tied up air seeding,” he said. Harvesting is done using a John Deere 9760 header fitted with an 11m offset front. It is fitted with auto steer, draper front that has been converted for windrowing (also windrow spraying) and a chopper that cuts the trash and spreads it evenly across the full width of the header. Making inter-row sowing possible is a John Deere RTK two-centime-
tre guidance system. “The accuracy to inter row sow was the whole crux of us being able to move towards no-till,” Mr Walter said. “Our long-term goal is to go to a 3m system when we turn the header over to gain the full benefit of a full controlled traffic system with a further five to 10 per cent improvement in the use of our machinery.” The soil protection provided by minimum tillage has allowed the direction of sowing to focus on getting water to flow off the paddocks. “We sow down the biggest slope in the paddock which gets the water off the paddocks with no risk of erosion,” he said. R a i n fa l l ave r a g e s 550mm a year. “Removing unproductive, waterlogged areas has made a huge difference to total yield; we still get a few wet areas but no longer see entire paddocks wiped out.”
There is no set crop rotation on Murnong with the decision based on what is needed to rectify a paddock’s problems, such as weed control, fertility or water logging. Mr Walter said controlled traffic, inter-row sowing and retaining stubble enables staff to get onto paddocks year round. Soils range from heavy clay duplexes to loamy sands “This means our timing for applying nutrients, chemicals and seed is the best we can get it,” he said. “We can begin sowing earlier because of the water retained by the soils with the minimum-till system. “We are not trying to sow in the mud and our crops are established before the soil gets wet. “We are out there doing the right thing at the right time, when we used to be delayed in the old system because

we couldn’t get on the paddocks.” According to Mr Walter they haven’t used broad spectrum insecticides on the property for three or four years. “We just don’t have insect pests because minimum-till means there is such a diverse home for beneficial insects and greater biological activity in the ground,” he pointed out. “We get some localised problems but no broad acre problems where we have to ‘nuke’ everything. “But we have had our fair share of problems like when we found our 10in (250mm) row spacing provided a great home for slugs and we had to factor in the cost of baiting. “That would be the biggest negative currently, of no-till in high rainfall areas.” Another tweak required in the last few wet years has been to reduce the length of the stubble to 250mm. “We can’t afford to leave the stubble as tall as they do up north because, in high rainfall areas, the machines move around on the wet ground,” he said. “If the tines come in contact with long stubble when inter-row sowing we end up with a big mess.” Comparing the last four year average yields against the last10 year average, Mr Walter said the effort had been worth it with substantial increases coming from the no-till, controlled traffic system. “The long term average for wheat was 3.5t/ ha and this has gone up to 6t/ha over the last four years with some paddocks producing 8t/ha. Canola has gone from 1.2t/ha to 2.6t/ha “Seeing results like this really pushes us to learn more and look for the next thing.” Continued page 5

auto-steer which limited compaction to specific wheel tracks. This resulted in soils that were better able to both drain and store water. In 2009 they introduced crop sensors to the front of the main cropping tractor allowing them to measure differences in crop health that are invisible to the eye. The improved information provided by the sensors assisted with key input decisions, particularly nitrogen applications. Mr Walter and the consultant used topographic maps collected by the RTK auto-steer as well as crop sensor and (five to seven year stacked average) yield
maps to assess where water moved around the property and identify waterlogging impacts. After all of the data was reviewed they decided on the location of a drainage line which was cut by a drainage contractor. Probably to date the biggest gain from this has been the identification of areas with poor drainage; Mr Walter estimates that the average area of crop loss has been reduced from 50 to only 5ha. An 1890 per cent return on investment in block re-design and drainage works amounted to nearly $100,000 in two years. In future Mr Walter
plans to use crop sensors to conduct weedmapping across the paddocks during summer spraying operations. Precision ag tools have allowed him to zone the farm by soil type to allow problem weed patches to be identified and the information used to vary herbicide and seeding rates. Since zoning paddocks according to soil type, Mr Walter also plans to use crop sensors to monitor crop performance in the zones throughout the growing season to assist in site-specific management. Mr Walter said the most important thing was their resolve to put the plough and match behind them. “We decided we wanted to get into no-till, controlled traffic, inter-row sow and leave our stubble and we have stuck to our guns,” he said. Measuring to manage In 2005 Mr Walter started working with a precision agriculture consultant by analysing satellite imagery for crop biomass and was surprised at the degree of spatialvariability in crop performance. The following year he started controlled traffic farming with an RTK 2cm

THE EFFECTIVE & PROVEN ANIMAL & BIRD REPELLENT YOU CAN RELY ON
Since March, the linchpin to his marketing program has been JBS’s Farm Assurance Program operating at its Brooklyn abattoir in Melbourne’s west. Based at Sherwood Grange, Mount Egerton, about 30 kilometres south
east of Ballarat, Mr Toohey runs 550 spring calving Angus breeders and has regularly sold over the hooks to a number of buyers during his quarter century in the beef business. But this year he has exclusively marketed their prog-
eny over the hooks to JBS. Branded ‘Great Southern’, JBS says in a promotional booklet that the beef is the result of “bringing together 600 individual farming families to produce a range of ‘cut-above’ beef products.
At a beef seminar at Ballarat in late July, JBS Farm Assurance and supply chain manager Mark Inglis said the ďŹ rm would have been happy with about 600 suppliers. It now had 1100. „ Continued page 7

Mt Egerton producer on yields „ From page 6
“It was capped at the beginning of July,â€? Mr Inglis said. Operating since last October after being trialled in Tasmania for about two and a half years, the program guarantees that fully traceable products “have been grown and treated using best practice for animal welfare, food safety and management proceduresâ€?. Mr Toohey, one of the ďŹ rst producers to sell to
JBS in October, told the seminar the program was “phenomenal and had changed what we do. Previously he had struggled to keep his vealers below Coles’ supermarket requirement that carcases weigh less than 270kg. “The problem was that 60 per cent of our cattle were above that weight and Coles didn’t want them. “Then if they went over 500kg live weight
the feedlots didn’t want them either. “That’s where this system is the best thing I’ve ever seen in terms of ease of management and selling cattle and I’ve been in the industry since 1989, he said. Basically JBS now accepts young male and female cattle with zero to four teeth weighing 220 to 420kg carcase weight. However, he said it required concentration and attention to detail to make
the program work, not least because JBS bought female cattle too and “they are different because we can run into problems of them becoming over fat. “But being able to easily sell the cull females makes a big difference in this system, he said He normally keeps 120 to 150 of his better females every year and sells the rest. The “best heifers had this year sold for $870. “But when we later
sold the lighter ones in the middle of April, because the price had lifted, they returned $930 a head, he said. Mr Toohey said that he generally started marketing calves at about eight or nine months of age in April or May. But this year he started selling in March when JBS was buying cattle for at least $2 a kilogram liveweight for 420kg animals. At the time of writing
Mt Egerton fodder trials test best brassica determine the best fodder brassica to sow. Turnips were on the menu for a few years but were scrapped “because of a choking issue, Mr Toohey said. “There are heaps and heaps of these fodder crops coming through which are really worth their weight in gold and although we are happy with the brassica rape we are on now we’ll check the new varieties again next year, he said. Last year in a 60 hectare paddock he sowed three varieties and then watched what the cattle ate, with the result that Subzero hybrid forage bras-
sica is still his best preferred variety. “The cattle will tell you every day of the week what they prefer, but the one they consistently leave is the one I don’t sow next year, Mr Toohey said. He always has a run off paddock with straw available to balance the rape input. People will say what costs are involved - there is a cost in breaking paddocks up. The cropping program starts when Mr Toohey spray tops pasture paddocks the year before planting. They’re then grazed out
over winter by cattle and are again sprayed in SeptemberOctober before rape seed is drilled in. Other paddocks, currently totalling 140ha, were sown to wheat in autumn. At the Ballarat seminar Mr Toohey was accosted by an attendee who said he would never feed his cattle brassicas again because he had cattle die from brassica poisoning. Mr Toohey said care needed to be taken, especially when rain caused the crop to shoot after a dry spell. A run-off paddock with hay available was always essential.
ing rate was substantially lower at $1.50 to $1.70kg for heifers.

JOE Toohey told the Ballarat beef seminar in July that feeding brassica fodder crops to his cows and calves “suits the JBS program right down to the ground. That’s because in a normal spring and summer there is a constant supply of highly nutritious fodder to keep cattle growing. He said the Mount Egerton country in its native state only grew unproductive bent grass before he embarked on a fodder crop, wheat and pasture rotation. But there continued to be quite a bit of trial and error to
the price was $2.20kg. At the same time, in the Ballarat saleyards, the go-

Asado makes a Sunday tasty lunch BARBECUING a forequarter of beef was never going to be easy given the weight of the meat involved and the time needed to cook it. But Warialda Belted Galloways’ Alan and Lizette Snaith, on 60 acres at Clonbinane on the Great
Dividing Range, were up for the challenge when Melbourne foodie Danial Chan put the idea out on social media. Inspired by an Argentinian food writer, Mr Chan said the elements as in any barbecue were simply combining some
meat with wood and a fire. At a Melbourne meeting a plan was hatched and the Snaiths named a date, August 17, and invited their farmers’ market customers to an asado, the Argentine name for slowly barbecuing large chunks of meat.

Argentinians enjoy asados where whole sheep or beef carcases are butterflied and hung on a metal frame standing against or over a wood fire to cook. In those cases a steel post usually suffices to support the meat. But the Snaiths and Mr Chan were working at another level and looking at supporting and turning a Belted Galloway forequarter of more than 70 kilograms over a substantial fire. Mr Snaith erected a serious gantry and added a specially welded frame which he wired to the forequarter. A block and tackle was then fitted to raise and lower the whole deal. The day before the event, the team assembled components and about 8pm started the fire. That burned all night and steady low heat was maintained until the meat was deemed to be cooked at about 1 pm the next day. Then with little apparent difficulty Mr Snaith and Mr Chan moved the forequarter from the fire on to a large stainless steel-topped table. Then the former demonstrated his butchery skills in reducing the fore-

quarter to edible pieces for the 60 or so meat lovers gathered hungrily nearby. Initially some ribs extracted by Mr Snaith met enthusiastic consumption mainly by a considerable number of more equally hungry children. There were no childsized meals here. There was more than enough meat cooked just right for immediate con-
sumption but Mr Chan relegated some underdone chunks back to the fire for some further heat exposure. After a sit-down meal to enjoy the fruits of the asado, Mr Snaith invited visitors to have him demonstrate one of their compliant head in a bucket Belted Galloway cows, where the different cuts of meat came from.
To do that he employed electric clippers to remove the not inconsiderable winter coat above the location of steak cuts. Deemed a considerable success, the Snaiths are planning another asado next April. But potential eaters should be early: bookings for this one closed more than three weeks before the event.

Care in silage-making SILAGE is a major feed component in southern Australian dairy cow rations from December until pasture can meet forage intake needs. Silage can be present in dairy rations, in varying amounts, for as much as 10 months of the year. Many of my clients maintain some silage in the ration all year to sustain consistency/base of ration components. The feed budgets we prepare for our clients each August aim at meeting this requirement, and of the last few years of violent seasons and milk prices, we’ve increased the silage budget by 50 per
v/05d07356/36-14
cent as a goal reserve to sustain milk production/ profit through adverse seasons and economic downturns. Silage can comprise 50 per cent of our consumed forage as veriďŹ ed of our feed budget post-mortems over the last 10 years. In terms of dry matter tonnage, it often equals grain fed for the same 12 months. We would not tolerate poor quality grain, yet silage by the time it reaches a cow’s mouth has a cost higher than grain on a dry matter basis. Silage management requires our best efforts to ensure we harvest a quality product that has the palatability and nutrient content to optimise its conversion to milk dollars. The four key elements to silage quality are: 1) correct moisture, 2) plant sugars, 3) lactic acid bacteria, and 4) oxygen-free storage. After many years of testing silage, from the perspective of fermentation quality, moisture content of 65 per cent is well proven to produce the highest lactic acid content (palatabilityand stability), and lowest level of undesirable acids. High lactic acid ensures a rapid fermentation to bring silage to a stable condition. Plant sugars are required for lactic acid bacteria to convert to lactic acid.
By JOHN LYNE Dairytech dairy
Pasture is inherently low in sugars so the use of a silage inoculant with enzymes to break down indigestible ďŹ bre to sugars for lactic acid conversion is essential. Lactic acid as described above is our best hope to make silage stable (no further fermentation = minimal dry losses) by lowering pH very rapidly. Also, lactic acid makes silage palatable reducing wastage at feed-out and optimising intake. Lactic acid will minimise other less desirable acids that reduce intake and are unable to produce stability due to lactic acid being 10 times stronger than other fermentation acids. The goal of fermentation is to preserve surplus forage for later consumption when pasture is reduced. It should burn up all oxygen to stop any further fermentation and breakdown of dry matter. To achieve this we must also seal silage sufďŹ ciently to minimise any oxygen entering the bale or stack. In the case of a pit or stack, ensure the face is removed daily to reduce secondary fermentation from exposure to oxygen.
SPEED ESSENTIAL: Time of cutting to ensiling plays a critical role in determining silage nutrient levels.
This is less of an issue in pasture silage due to low starch and sugars. The four phases of silage production Plant material will continue to ‘breathe’ after cutting and continue doing so after ensiling until all oxygen has been used. So oxygen is our enemy in producing good fermentation, for preservation and limiting of undesirable yeasts and moulds from forming. As plant material breathes it converts plant sugars to carbon dioxide and water – a costly loss to nutrient value and capacity for conversion to milk dollars. Heating occurs also as this process devalues our silage. Heating will cause caramelising and breakdown of protein rendering it unavailable to the cow as well as dry matter loss. For these reasons, the time from cutting to ensiling plays a critical role in just how much nutrient we end up with and how much milk we’ll produce per kg DM of silage. Anaerobic This phase begins when all oxygen is depleted. Anaerobic lactic acid bacteria start the fermentation process lowering pH as rapidly as their number will permit. With silage inoculant containing adequate lactic acid bacteria a pH below 5 should have occurred within 72 hours in pasture or lucerne silage. Once pH reaches this point, dry matter losses stop and oxygen loving yeasts and moulds cannot grow. Many varieties of bacteria exist naturally on forage, but few are good enough (specie) or in sufďŹ cient numbers to cause a rapid pH decline. Inoculants containing lactic acid bacteria ensure a rapid and uniform fermentation; fermentation
based on naturally occurring bacteria produce lactic and acetic acids plus alcohol and can generate up to 24 per cent in dry matter losses. Whereas lactic acid bacterial inoculants can convert plant sugars, and indigestible ďŹ bre if they contain enzymes, to lactic acid which eliminates dry matter (energy) losses. Stable Once lactic acid bacteria growth stops, silage will have reached a terminal pH and is ‘frozen’ and capable of long term storage provided oxygen cannot enter the bale or stack. Oxygen is our enemy, and if it is excluded little microbial activity and nutrient loss can occur. Feed-out Once silage is exposed to oxygen again yeasts and moulds that were dormant begin to grow again. In the case of stacks and pits removal of the face daily is essential to minimise spoilage through secondary fermentation which always produces acetic acid. Likewise baled silage fed out too long in advance of cows accessing it, will also deteriorate in both nutrient value and palatability. Both will reduce intake which is often thought to be over feeding when residual wastage is observed. This secondary fermentation heats up silage and causes excessive losses in dry matter as described. Silage is not a cheap feed, but a necessary part of pasture based systems. Through sound harvesting practices we can conserve excess pasture in a way that can be converted to milk dollars proďŹ tably. John Lyne is a dairy production specialist with Dairytech Nutrition. FARMERS’ aims of producing the best quality beef they can sometimes fall in a heap through bad feeding decisions and poor transport to slaughter. Mark Inglis, a farm assurance and supply chain manager with the JBS meatworks at Brooklyn, told the South West Beef Conference in Ballarat in late July that dark cutters or carcases destined for low quality hamburger beef were the result of those failures. He said producers should not change the diets of their cattle less than 40 or 50 days before slaughter. “If you do you upset the ora within their stomachs and the animals then starve to some extent,â€? he said. “Cattle need to be on a rising plane of nutrition and putting on about 1kg/ day from being fed 10 to 11MJ of metabolisable energy/kg and if they are not on that we have a better chance of high pH meat or a number of dark cutters in a mob. He said the main factor affecting a high pH is lack of proper nutrition and glycogen and anything higher than a pH of 5.7 is a dark cutter and unacceptable for Meat Standards Australia (MSA) grading. “As a producer you need to make sure the glycogen bucket is as full as it can be when the animals leave your place,â€? Mr Inglis said. On one farm he had observed recently, the protein level of the pasture was too high and was inhibiting the glycogen levels the cattle could store. “As well, transport without stopping reduced stress and glycogen loss,â€?

he said. Mr Inglis said 100 cattle shipped about 900km from Trangie near Dubbo to Brooklyn resulted in only one dark cutter. “Good transport does not deplete glycogen and because they are having a sensational season up there, their glycogen buckets were as full as they could be,â€? he said. When cattle are being loaded and unloaded is when they really burn up glycogen; actual travel hardly affects them at all. Even trips across often stormy Bass Strait do not produce many dark cutters. “We take a lot of cattle from King Island and even accounting for their boat trips we are getting better meat quality results now,â€? Mr Inglis said. “Subjecting cattle to temperature extremes, too, is not a good way to produce good meat. “I remember at HeyďŹ eld years ago it was 35 degrees during the day and after cattle were yarded for transport to the abattoir it snowed.â€? Marbling of the eye muscle was discussed with some vigor by conference participants and Mr Inglis. Ausmeat marbling is the amount of fat in an eye muscle but the MSA measure is the amount and distribution. Mr Inglis said there was no way Australian consumers would buy meat with high levels of marbling because local perceptions were that it had too much fat in it. “But if it was served up to them cooked it would be bloody fantastic,â€? Mr Inglis said. Most well-marbled meat is going to markets in the United States and Middle East.

ad smells coming from your septic system are a good indicator that something is not right. Not only are smells unpleasant and embarrassing, but they could be a clear sign that things are soon going to get worse. Your septic system is the digestive system in your back yard. It relies on naturally occurring, good bacteria to break down all the waste and grease that you flush away. The wrong type of bacteria or too few good bacteria in your system, leads to smells, clogged drains, overflowing septics and blocked absorption trenches. Families have been relying on Australian made Ecocare Activator for years. This Quality Assured product will clean, clear and condition everything from kitchen
Healthy eating advice for your septic system. sinks to drains, relegating smells and blockages to the history books. “I have been using your product for over a decade. During that period I have had no occasion to use the services of a plumber. Drains run freely, never is there an offensive odour and the septic system works perfectly,” commented V. Wright from New South Wales. One product – multiple uses. But it doesn’t stop with what you can see. As you flush it down the drain it continues to work unseen within the confines of your septic system. Restoring the natural balance of good bacteria and keeping smells and blockages away naturally.
Swap septic system smells for smiles! “With most of our plumbing set under a concrete slab, it really gives us peace of mind.” (Lyndall Sleep, Victoria)

n unpleasant smell is often the first sign that you have a problem with your septic system. But once the smell is there, the problem is already in place. Ecocare Activator, trusted for decades by families across Australia, is your one-stop solution to septic system woes. Ken and Glenise Outch, from Victoria, have been using Ecocare Activator for many years. This is what they had to say, “The product itself is fantastic. We use it around the house for all the cleaning and in turn it is constantly keeping our bacterial level in the septic system at optimal levels. It is also removing the need to use any harmful chemical cleaners which can kill off the system. “Thank you again for your product and the great service you provide…we always know you are only a free phone call away!” Used as an all over cleaner for the house, it is then simply flushed down
the drain or toilet where it continues to work within your pipes to clear blockages and condition your system. No need for expensive maintenance, no need to call out the plumber (and certainly no need to replace the system!).
ever used…The best product and the only one in my house for cleaning!” said Debbie Godfry from Queensland. “I purchased Activator as I had a problem with odour; a build up of fats; blockages in my seepage drains and wetness at the surface of my trench.
…it is keeping our costs low by saving on regular pump outs and having to get a plumber out to remove blockages and/or replace the system…we also don’t have the cupboard full of all different types of cleaners. Thank you again…” (Ken and Glenise Outch, Victoria) “We use it in the drains (toilet, shower, spa etc) and it has been great. I have even used it on my stainless steel oven, stove, sinks, benches, laminated benches and they have come up cleaner than any other product I have
Healthy, happy and odour free in 3 easy steps Ecocare Activator is the one product you can rely on to cut your cleaning time down to the bare minimum and keep your house, septic system and Aerated Wastewater Treatment System (AWTS) clean and healthy. “I have recommended Ecocare Activator regularly and have seen even the most neglected system turned around… within as little as one month,” said Senior Service Technician Michael Goddard from Wastewater Consultants Pty Ltd. Use to clean all hard surfaces and kill odours on contact, then simply rinse your surfaces and pour any remaining mixture straight down the drain. As it moves into your septic system it continues working, clearing blockages and conditioning your system. You do the first part, leave it to do the rest.
Expert advice that won’t leave you stranded Competent, experienced and highly knowledgeable in our field of expertise, we are also friendly and down-toearth and here to make your life easier. Ecocare Activator will solve your wastewater problems and prevent them coming back. Read what Michelle Lavinge from Victoria had to say about our service:
“I had been told by 3 plumbers there was nothing they could do to help me with the terrible odour…Your team worked with me over several months to clean out the waste through the various areas of the house… Thank you for all the times you called me to check and confirm how our problem was going – I didn’t have to call you. Fantastic work – it’s rare to see such great customer service when things get tough. “I would like to thank you for the friendly service, after sales support and excellent result I have received from your company and product Ecocare Activator. Our extremely unpleasant experience with this terrible odour from the drains and septic is now over and we couldn’t be more relieved.”

IN 2013, China imported more than 2.1 million tonnes of dairy products worth US$8.8 billion to make it the largest importer of milk products in the world. Its imports have increased more than 45 per cent in the last ďŹ ve years and this trend is set to gather pace. As the need for overseas produced dairy in China grows, the requirement for a diversiďŹ ed group of reliable international suppliers of the best quality is becoming urgent. Whole milk powder for instance, is supplied almost solely from one country - New Zealand - that garnered 41 per cent of total Chinese dairy imports in 2013. China imports the equivalent of 10bn litres (1000ML) of milk each year, which is more than the total national production of Australia and with Australian domestic demand increasing the chances of Australian dairy ever â€˜ďŹ‚ooding’ the Chinese market are very small. A free trade agreement that gives Australia the same tariff provisions to the Chinese market as New Zealand will undoubtedly help to deepen the already strong relationships between the Australian and Chinese dairy industries and lead to better deals for Chinese consumers. The Australian dairy market has been price deregulated since 2001 and is resilient, highly efďŹ cient and responsive to
consumer demands on price, quality and safety with strict government-enforced standards in place to protect consumer health and welfare. Australia is already supportive of China’s domestic industry, nurturing its on-farm development with the export of more than 50,000 dairy heifers every year. Dairy Australia has presented at the China Dairy Industry association annual conference since 1995 and has been working closely with the Association on the Dairy Australia China Scholarship Program since 1999. In that time DA has brought to Australia 220 Chinese scholars to get ďŹ rsthand knowledge of our industry and the relationships established are providing invaluable personal and business links between our two nations. The cooperation between our dairy industries extends in other directions. For over a decade, Australia has worked closely with the Ministry of Agriculture sharing technical information in the biennial China-Australia Dairy talks and assisted with domestic production. For two years running, the Australian ambassador to China has spoken in support of these growing ties at the CDIA conference in Shanghai, proof of the level of importance the Australian Government is giving to dairy. As our relationship further deepens, the completion of a free trade agreement will be signiďŹ cant.

FIELD DAY PRESIDENT: President of the Elmore Field Days committee Frank Harney said he is looking forward to the ‘Taste more at Elmore’ feature at this year’s event.
million and is being continuously enhanced by the construction of additional buildings, for both the public and exhibitors, and provision of additional services including equipment demonstration areas. In the last few years a bi-annual Demonstration Day, devoted to tillage, cultivation, spraying and fertilising and other input handling has been successfully staged on the Field Days site. This is both seasonally relevant and of practical benefit to farmers in the region complimenting the focus on hay and silage production equipment during October. A distinct advantage of the site is the adequate space available for crop trials or other in field demonstrations. Elmore Field Days is a community owned and run, not for profit
organisation that strives to maintain its fundamental purpose - an unbiased service to agriculture and community with flow on economic benefit to regional areas. “Everything is shaping up very nicely at the moment,” Mr Harney said. “It’s all drying out, which will be just in time for the crop demos, so it will be a good opportunity to see the machinery at its best. “I would really like to thank the girls in the Elmore office for putting this all together in the time frames we all work under. “The office staff correlates everything and the committee worked tirelessly to present the venue in the best condition possible. “The Elmore Field Days is just going from strength to strength,” he said.

FOOD and wine is one of the main features at this year’s Elmore Field Days with the organisers keen to showcase plenty of local produce in the new food and wine pavilion. According to the president of the Elmore Field Days committee Frank Harney, the new pavilion will host about 21 exhibitors which is expected to be a drawcard at the 2014 event. “This year the site is absolutely full,” Mr Harney said. “We have been inundated this year, with about 100 more on the waiting list. “We have opened up a new area for food tastings – Taste more at Elmore – which will feature cheeses, wines, salamis, with all exhibitors having to provide tastings. “All the exhibitors have produced all these food and wine products from their own land,” he said. Mr Harney added that another new exhibit this year is the American car display, which will be alongside the usual vintage machinery display. “We also have an increased number of exhibitors displaying their organic or natural fertilisers as opposed to always relying on the synthetic stuff and of course the arts and crafts general interest area will be of great interest to visitors again,” he said. The 2014 General Interest pavilion will provide the opportunity to enjoy the many cottage and commercial displays and demonstrations over the three days. The Country Women’s Association of Victoria will display and demonstrate a variety of both new and old handicrafts. Elmore has gained recognition as one of Australia’s premier agricultural field days. The first Elmore Field Days were held in October 1964 after a voluntary committee organised the first comprehensive display of farming equipment and services alongside the Campaspe River. The permanent site now has a developed cost approaching $2.5

Chuck on Charlie Carp, save a river AN environmentally friendly, effective all-purpose liquid fertiliser made in Deniliquin is cleaning up the waterways of the Murray Darling Basin by catching introduced European carp and turning them into fertiliser. Perfect for lawns, citrus trees, vegetables and seedlings, Charlie Carp has had huge success commercially too on wheat, barley, canola and pasture. European carp were introduced into the waterways of the Riverina in the 1940s by a man who was denied a licence to farm them. As an act of vengeance, he let the ďŹ sh loose into the surrounding rivers. Producing more than one million eggs per year, European carp had bred proliďŹ cally over half a century to a point where in 1995 they had become such a destructive pest that something had to be done because native ďŹ sh were suffocating. So along came Charlie Carp which used the whole ďŹ sh to make liquid fertiliser. Bursting with protein, omega 3 fatty acids and all the vital trace elements essential for a perfect fertiliser it is building its reputation as not only an extremely effective liquid fertiliser but also as an environmental advocate for cleaner rivers. Economical and easy to use in watering systems and boom sprays the fertiliser goes to work immediately and cereal crops have never looked so green or canola owers so yellow. With an NPK of 10:2:6 just one dose
of Charlie Carp will boost crop immune systems, stimulate new growth and crop strength as well as condition the soil for future growth. For domestic use there are one, ďŹ ve and 20 litre drums and a 2.2 litre spray pack. Commercially there are 200 litre drums and 1000 litre shuttles. Charlie Carp can be purchased directly from the factory by phoning 1300 305 963 or at Bunnings and all leading garden centres.

Recycling farm materials into fashion Ag Art Wear Competition has record number of entries THE Ag Art Wear Competition is back at this year’s Elmore and District Machinery Field Days with a record number of entries on display during the three days in October. Coordinator of the general interest area and spokesperson for the competition, Joyce Giffin, said the competition is for a wearable ‘work of art’ including accessories created from materials and items of an agricultural nature found on a farm. “Garments in previous competitions have been made from frost cloth, copper, grain, electric fence tape, beer bottle tops, common wool packs, hessian, rubber tyres, ear tags, hay bales, twine, glass and even old parts of cars,” Mrs Giffin said. “A big variety of materials are used and they fashion it into a garment. “Materials can be purchased at a hardware store, just as long as the material can be found in an agricultural environment.” The Ag Art Wear Competition is open to everyone and is divided into four sections - Avant Garde, Designer, Under 21 and a Hat section. There are special conditions of entry and Mrs Giffin emphasised that one of the most important of the conditions is that “the garment must allow free body movement and not injure, scratch or be of a hindrance to the model wearing the garment”. “It must be of a weight that can be comfortably worn and carried,” she said. “It is also important that the creation be durable enough to be worn at least six times during the length of the field days and that commercial dress fabric, hats, shoes etc is allowed but judges will deduct points for the use of non-agricultural materials. Local models are sourced from Elmore and Rochester to wear the “way out creations” and take part in the fashion parade on the catwalk in the Auditorium Marquee. The fashion parade takes place at 11am and 2pm each day of the field days, with the winners announced after the 2pm parade on Thursday, October 9.
WEARABLE ART: The Ag Art Wear Competition is about creating wearable art using materials found in agriculture.

LOCAL MODELS: Models from Elmore and Rochester are used to showcase the “way out” creations.
“It is quite professional now with the models wearing the creations,” Mrs Giffin said. “When the competition started in 2001 those that entered the competition had to model their own designs. “We had 12 entries then and this year we have about 50 entries. “And our generous sponsors provide cash prizes for the winners of each section.” The best 12 garments from last year’s competition were displayed at various places of the field day’s sponsors, with a two month stint at the Bendigo Tourism Centre which proved to be very popular. “Anyone can enter the competition from school students through to the older generation,” Mrs Giffin said. “We find the biggest number of entries come from the students in the Under 21 section. “It has become a regular competition for some of the schools and some of the garments are way out of this world.

LIFT AND SPLIT: A Superaxe ready for work and one of Whitland Engineering’s employees welding a Superaxe component.
Whitlands Engineering clocks up two decades of Australian-made FAMILY owned, country-based farm machinery manufacturer Whitlands Engineering is celebrating its 20th year in business this year. It will build its 3000th firewood handling machine, see six employees go on long service leave and take advantage of exciting export opportunities. These days it specialises in designing and building a range of domestic sized hydraulic wood splitters and industrial ďŹ rewood processing machinery.
However, 20 years ago, it started with one machine, the Superaxe. Chief executive ofďŹ cer and head designer David Burder was chopping 12 tonne of timber for his home heating every season using a hand-held axe. On lamenting another few weeks in the woodshed, he had a go at designing a hydraulic machine to do the job for him. With a background in welding and construction, an eye for good design, and a decent amount of common sense Mr Burder set about designing the ďŹ rst pivoting blade vertical hydraulic wood splitter in the country. At that time, wood splitters were all horizontal and close to the ground meaning, the amount of bending and lifting defeated efďŹ cient splitting. Mr Burder’s design featured a vertical conďŹ guration meaning that the operator could stand up straight while working. An innovative log lifter on the side eliminated even more effort. Trialling the ďŹ rst prototype attracted lots of attention from neighbors and family and it was not long before the ďŹ rst order was in; Superaxe was born.
The business was shaky at ďŹ rst – Mr Burder had little experience running a business and then there was the problem of getting the word out about this great new machine. Looking back it was an almighty risk, especially since the workshop was on the Whitlands family farm in the mountains between MansďŹ eld and WhitďŹ eld, 75 kilometres from Wangaratta. That meant freight, access to power, employees and marketing exposure were all limited. Mr Burder started attending local ďŹ eld days to showcase the machine. Henty, Elmore, Seymour and Tasmania ďŹ eld day attendees were all incredibly receptive to the design and momentum began. Despite no glossy brochures, internet or email, the company steadily built a solid reputation for providing great service and tough machinery. By ďŹ ve years, the business had taken on its ďŹ rst employees: a bookkeeper, a ďŹ eld day representative and three in the workshop. About 15 years on, those ďŹ rst ďŹ ve employees are still with the company. “I had no experience
managing people and never tried to create a positive culture in the workplace, Mr Burder said. “I just tried to treat my employees with respect and understanding. “Plus I found it helpful to always keep a slab of beer in the fridge! As the company grew, the laws around farm safety evolved. In 2009, WorkCover introduced pivotal changes to wood splitter laws and in response, Whitlands Engineering introduced a new range of machines. The Aussie Chopper range set the benchmark for safety, efficiency and ease-of-use and was quickly adopted as the machine of choice for hire and rental companies, arborists and firewood production businesses. Small changes in the Superaxe design further cemented the company as a leader in innovative design. As Asian markets opened, Australian manufacturing made a gradual shift to outsourcing. However, Mr Burder made a decision early on to keep all manufacturing in house and resist the temptation of going offshore. Now the cornerstone

company philosophy, he said it was fundamental to Whitlands’ success, longevity and reputation. “Local manufacturing keeps money in the local economy, supports 20 employees and their families and most importantly keeps integrity in the manufacturing process. “Imported machines may be cheaper but they certainly don’t last very long; to say we are Australian made means more than anything.â€? Whitlands Engineering in 2014 is stronger than ever. There are 21 employees, three brands and more than a dozen different models – all of which are leaders in their product category. Whitlands Engineering has overcome increasing competition from Asian imports, steel prices, drought and the global ďŹ nancial crisis. Every machine is still built from scratch in Whitlands and shipped directly to buyers. As well all machines are grounded in the company philosophy: they are ergonomically enhanced, built to last, productive, safe and efďŹ cient.

Many farmers in our Recharge Conditioning Program are getting 8 to 10 years out of their batteries. Just dose them when you buy them, treat them every two years and give them an overnight charge twice a year between treatments and eliminate the sulphation problem.
GERARD Anselmi will be at the Elmore and District Machinery Field Days again this year marketing his battery rejuvenation solutions. Known as Recharge Battery Revitaliser it is available in various pack sizes with the two litre size at $230 the most popular. Online that size pack sells for $380. Capable of treating 80 car batteries or 40 N-70 tractor batteries, Mr Anselmi said the cost of treating an average car battery was about $4. Treatment with Recharge means the liquid dissolves the sulphur ions that form on and degrade battery plates. That enables the electrolyte to hold a charge again. Mr Anselmi said one of his satisfied Queensland customers, Shane Perry, Claremont, had recently returned to buy his third two litre Recharge pack since 2007.

Mr Perry told Mr Anselmi he only bought secondhand batteries but by rejuvenating them with Recharge he was able to get four to six years of life from them; before Recharge their average life

SWARM management and other important tasks of the early part of a beekeeper’s season will be the topic of an introductory workshop on bees and beekeeping held by the North Eastern Apiarists Association on Sunday, October 5 at Swanpool, south of Benalla. Experienced beekeepers from around the North East will be on hand to discuss, demonstrate and encourage learning on all aspects of beekeeping. To be held on the tennis courts at Swanpool, this workshop follows a highly successful workshop held at the same location in October last year that more than 60 people attended. The day will start with a screening of an iconic beekeeping documentary Gentlemen, the Queen. Filmed in 1974 this film features one of the most experienced beekeepers in the North East, Linton Briggs.

Dealing with the production of queen bees, viewing the film today is a fascinating insight into how much and how little things have changed over the past 40 years. Spring is the time for reproduction of the species and for bees this means swarming. Seeing half the residents of their workforce disappearing over the back fence is the last thing any beekeeper wants. There are, however, techniques available to the beekeeper that allow the hive to realise its natural desire to reproduce and at the same time retain the bees for the beekeeper. Interest is already high in this spring workshop and interested beekeepers should register with treasurer Rodney Whitehead at their earliest convenience. Airwell’s water solutions pump life to remote bores PREVIOUSLY unused water sources from low flow bores or bores located remotely from electrical power can now play an important role in farm water supply planning thanks to Airwell Pumps. The Airwell Group Pty Ltd has been providing water pumping solutions to the agriculture industry for over 35 years and has witnessed too many occasions where insufficient planning and attention to farm water supply has created major difficulties and expensive solutions to farming operations. So its technology allows Victorian representative Robert Fishburn to design farm water systems using the most diverse range of pumping products currently available. He will be on the company’s stand at Elmore Field Days to discuss your farm water requirements. Mr Fishburn has been involved in the Victorian agricultural water industry for more than 35 years and has been heavily involved in water designs ranging from small single pump and

HAY SAVER: A WasteNot Feed Pad feeder in action on a feed pad.
WasteNot tackles bossy cows and PXGGLHG ¿ HOG KD\ THE wetter than usual autumn and winter has made it much more difficult to feed cattle without seriously pugging valuable pastures on flatter farms. But Terry Allan of WasteNot Stockfeeders, at Elmore Field Days again this year, has seen a number of his Feed Pad hay feeders help save the day, particularly on dairy farm feed pads. “With a Feed Pad, cows can be fed after each milking (if that is how you have set it up) to boost their intake and/or to balance their total ration, thus increasing the efficiency of conversion. “When they reach the paddock we see a much gentler
scene: cows are much quieter, grazing or laying down much earlier, rather than charging around the pasture chasing the tractor or today’s hay. “Pasture is eaten out later in the day – even into the afternoon,” Mr Allan said. “If the Feed Pad has been used to help manage the pasture better, hopefully we have grown a little more feed and will utilise a little more of it every paddock, every rotation.” In a year like this, he said it was particularly wasteful to roll out hay or silage for cattle in a wet paddock. “The herd lines up and eats the first half of the hay but watch what
happens to the second half. “A group of cows progressively leave the line although there is still hay there because it is no longer an effective feeding space for tail enders. “The bossy cows dominate the remaining hay, and it is not until they are full and they leave the line that the shy cows and heifers get a chance to come back to where the hay was. “But it’s gone by now – either eaten by the bosses or trampled into the mud,” he said. “Did the tail-enders or the pasture get a fair g o at your place today?” Mr Allan asked. For more information contact Terry Allan on 1800 808 685.

THE Freedom Tanks’ site at this year’s Elmore Field Days will have a little extra activity about it, with cyclers taking over some of the site to raise awareness for an upcoming fundraising event. Roger and Andrea Fuller have set up a foundation known as “Bays’ Foundation which is named after their son Bailey who passed away in 2012 at the age of 8 as a result of an on-farm drowning accident. “Bailey (Bays) was a very bright and happy boy who loved life and everything to do with it, Mr Fuller said. “Bays had an intellectual disability, so he had no sense of danger but a great sense of adventure. “Some of his passions were bike riding and swimming, which unfortunately contributed to his death. The Bays Foundation is raising funds for the children’s ward at the Bendigo Hospital to purchase chairs that convert to beds for parents to sleep in while their children are in hospital. “Hospitals for kids can be bad enough, but if you are able to stay with your child in some comfort that may make it a little easier. “I can speak from experience, as we have spent many a night there, Mr Fuller said. The foundation’s goal is to raise $20,000 by cycling 404 kilometres from Mildura to Echuca over two days on the second weekend of November. Mr Fuller is heavily involved in Bendigo’s cycling community and had called on many of his friends and more than 20 local businesses to support the fundraiser in what will be known as “Bays’ Ride. To raise awareness for the upcoming fundraiser, the Freedom Tanks site at Elmore Field Days will have a display of bike riders, riding on their bikes on wind trainers continuously from 9am
AWARENESS: A foundation named in honor of Bailey, pictured here with his older brother, Zac, will be raising funds at the field days.

The weather that causes most cancelled fly-in plans is low cloud which eliminates all but instrument rated pilots who can fly solely on the gauges. DAILY DEMO: Mike Fix with his Rehabilitator plough at Elmore Field Days 2013.
GRAHAM Wood, Graham Wood Machinery, and Mike Fix of Fix Engineering will again team up at the Elmore Field Days. They have been partners on imported Austrian, as well as their own Australian built machinery for many years. In the latter category they will release at the field days new seed boxes and seeding systems built by Fix Engineering in Daylesford. One of the Australian imports on display will be the Vertikator, a one pass pasture and small seeds seeding system for over-sowing and re-seeding. It levels, harrows, seeds and rolls at high speed with seed evenly dispersed over the whole surface without drill rows. It will be demonstrated at Elmore each day. The second is the Exaktor seed box, designed for aftermarket attachment to
cultivating equipment to combine two or more operations. Mr Wood is the originator of a third, the Whoppa Choppa cutting and feeding out system for all baled fodder. Also, Fix Engineering has a number of implements for weed management and seeding in the vegetable industry. The most popular is the low power Rehabilitator plough. It provides environmentally friendly tillage with superior lift to allow more air into the soil. Deep and surface cultivation is often achieved in one pass. With a seed box attached crops are sown at the same time. There are pasture options as well for deep and surface aeration without tearing up existing pasture. For more information contact Graham Wood on 0418 591 678 or Mike Fix on 0418 508 573.

TIDY UP: Tow ard Farm’s tow-and-collect pasture cleaner will be on show at the field days.
TOW and Farm will launch its new liquid fertiliser spreader, the Tow and Fert Multi 4000 at this year’s Elmore Field Days. Designed and made by New Zealand-based company Metalform it joins Tow and Farm’s other similar machines, the tow behind Multi 1000 and its three point linkage 1200L model. All machines have similar traits. A stainless steel trash pump, which has the ability to draw water/ effluent from any source on the farm, quickly fills the machine at which time any form of soluble
fertiliser can be added. The 4000 is sold with an onboard crane (optional) making filling quick and easy; with its vigorous in tank agitation, it will dissolve urea in 10 to 15 minutes. This application saves up to 50 per cent of the cost of applied nitrogen. Users can then add any form of fine particle fertiliser that soil or animals require. Once mixed and located in the appropriate paddock, the operator presses remote control to open constant re-circulating booms
(no fertiliser will settle in booms or tank). Then press another button to start spraying and depending on the fertiliser mix the booms will spray a swathe up to 24 metres wide. Tow and Farm’s own computer program sold with the 4000 takes the guess work out of mixing variables and utilising the on board scales. This means accurate mixes can be achieved thus saving money. 1= ODPE EUHHGV ERRVW SUR¿WV BY adopting New Zealand sheep genetics, Inverleigh-based Murnong Farming has boosted prime lamb gross margins by more than 60 per cent compared with lambs produced from first cross ewes joined to Poll Dorset sires. With NZ Highlander ewes joined to NZ Primera rams, Murnong found 180 per cent lambing is normal compared with 130 per cent from the traditional cross. A total of 1000 of the former survive happily on 62.5 hectares while the latter need 75ha for similar comfort. With a kilogram of live lamb valued at $5, the resulting 1800 Primera/ Highlander lambs average 25.5kg each and after some supplementary feed inputs gross $215,100. However, the first-cross Poll Dorset lambs only number 1300 and weigh 22.5kg each to gross $133,350. Murnong manager Josh Walter told a recent field day that like the rest of the farm – it runs a 320 sow piggery and extensive winter crops - the focus of the prime lamb system fell on

increasing profitability and efficiency. “We wanted to produce a consistently high quality lamb carcase of 19 to 23kg in a self-replacing system,” he said. While developing the action plan to achieve this goal Mr Walter and staff identified the need to address the key problem
areas of lamb survival, lamb growth rates and mature ewe size. He said the farm’s piggery had taught them what could be achieved with the right balance of nutrition, genetics and management. “How can we get the sheep more like the pig operation - that’s where we started the technical
thinking,” Mr Walter said. “We found as nutrition got better, production improved and having sheep in good condition all year (by feeding supplements) made the flock easier to manage. “So we had the nutrition and management down pat, but we needed the genetics.”
In order to find the right ones Mr Walter travelled to FocusGenetics in NZ to see its sheep program first hand and, as a result, imported Primera rams and Highlander ewes in 2010. He then carried out his own on-farm trials comparing them to what could be sourced within Australia.
Trialling the imported genetics has seen lamb survival substantially increase in their commercial flock. Some of the other improvements include: s BIRTHING ASSISTANCE levels dropped from five per cent in 2010 to 1.9 per cent in 2013; s SCANNING PER CENTAGES

were up 18 per cent and weaning ratesimproved; s LAMB SURVIVAL INcreased by 10 per cent from the existing crossbred system; s PER CENT LESS FEED input was required to produce more lambs due to the reduced frame size of the ewes; and s LAMB GROWTH RATES ALlowed lambs to be turned off threeweeks earlier than the original crossbred system. “When you take into account all the possible variables that affect lamb production, our own trials indicate we could likelyachieve a further 20 per cent increase in kilos per ha return over and above our existing crossbred and Poll Dorset prime lamb operation over the next three years or earlier as the genetics take influence,” Mr Walter said. The results were well beyond his expectations. Following subsequent discussions with the Focus Genetics partnership, Murnong Farming has become a ram multiplier breeder in Australia and a key genetic breeding facility in western Victoria.

Lambex gold win THE Woolumbool ram sale on October 1 will offer lamb producers a smorgasbord of high quality genetics, specifically bred for south eastern Australian conditions and suitable for current domestic and export market specifications. Gold level accuracies on all data from the stud’s Poll Dorset and White Suffolk sheep should instil confidence with prospective buyers, but just in case, there is now another stamp of excellence on Woolumbool genetics. At the recent Lambex 2014 conference in Adelaide, Woolumbool rams sired a gold medal-winning entry in the associated competition to find Australia’s Best Lamb. Stud principal Phil Clothier’s family entered lambs in the competition.

DETPA Grove’s long and successful history in the White Suffolk breed and prime lamb industry is the foundation for its current launch of ‘new generation’ sires. Extensive use of advanced breeding technology has greatly reduced generation turnover and decades of objective measurement have placed Detpa Grove at the elite end of the industry for veriďŹ able performance. As an example of how genetic management, artiďŹ cial breeding and feed technology are combined optimally is the ram Detpa Grove 130066, one of the Pipkorn family’s new generation sires. He is in the top one per cent as a trait leader for carcase plus index, weaning weight, post weaning weight, yearling and hogget weights. This ram weighed 75.5kg at four months under natural grazing conditions and has been used to cover 100
specially selected ewes in the stud. Sires like him dramatically impact commercial prime lamb production by increasing growth rates in terminal sires; lambs reach proďŹ table slaughter target weights more consistently and in a shorter time than industry averages. For lamb production efďŹ ciency, DG130066’s dam produced quintuplets and off grass she weaned 201kg of lambs at three and a half months of age. Detpa Grove’s total ock performance has it at approximately 20 index points above the industry average. Thursday, October 9 presents the next opportunity to purchase some of these new generation Detpa Grove White Suffolk genetics, with about 200 head of stud and ock rams and stud ewes on offer at its Jeparit onproperty sale.
Englewood Park to offer 133 rams ENGLEWOOD Park Poll Dorset and White Suffolk stud, Inverleigh, will hold its 37th on property production sale on Wednesday, October 8 at 1pm. It will offer 102 Poll Dorset ock rams, 10 Poll Dorset stud rams and 21 White Suffolk ock rams. Stud principal Geoff Oliver said the stud aims to produce rams that are true to type and have adequate length with plenty of muscle and dense downs wool while maintaining balance. He said he bred rams to sire
prime lambs to meet any market speciďŹ cation in the quickest possible time. “All our rams are visually appraised for structural soundness and then Stockscan performance assessed to give buyers the important eye muscle area along with growth and fat measurements,â€? he said. This tool assists buyers select the best rams to suit their endeavors to produce perfect carcases, Mr Oliver said. All rams are OJD-vaccinated and are accredited ovine brucel-
losis-free. He said the stud used the success of progeny from its 1300 ďŹ rst-cross ewe prime lamb enterprise to prove the genetic value of its Englewood Park rams. “Our ďŹ rst draft of 280 12 to 14 weeks of age sucker lambs hooked at MC Herd’s works last September averaged 21.2kg and returned $118.54 each. Then a pen of 77 shorn lambs sold at Ballarat market on April 22 this year made $167 each.â€? More information: Geoff Oliver 0409 355 018.

As the sun sets on past Detpa Grove successes... New generations emerge
WEATHER conditions are ideal for worms. The recent rain in the state has provided ideal conditions for the survival of worm larvae on our pastures. Sheep that are nutritionally stressed, in light condition and grazing on short pastures are likely to be affected by worms and scouring this winter. Worms should be considered in all ill-thrifty or scouring sheep, regardless of when the sheep were last drenched. To help establish whether worms are the cause of ill-thrift or scouring it is worth considering the following: The nutrition of the sheep including the feed availability, supplemental feeding and stocking rate; s THE CLASS AND CONDI tion of the sheep including their body condition score; and s THE DRENCH PROGRAM including the product/s used and date/s drenched, in particular the time since the last treatment. To confirm worm infes-

As part of the scholarship Mikaela undertook public speaking exercises to help improve confidence, and also enjoyed a networking dinner where she had the opportunity to talk to industry leaders and voices of the agricultural sector. “I am now a second year scholar, and this year we had the opportunity to tour Parliament and meet our local MPs and the Minister for Agriculture, Barnaby Joyce,” Mikaela said. “I was fortunate enough to spend time with our local MP, Cathy McGowan (MHR, Indi), where we discussed how to get youth involved in agriculture in our local area.” The Horizon Scholarship, an initiative of the Rural Industries R&D Corporation in partnership with industry sponsors, provides $5000 per year for the duration of a student’s university degree. It also offers students annual industry work placements that give them first-hand experience.

Around 400 rams were offered with a clearance of 85 per cent for a gross of $771,800 at an average of $1984. The top priced Dohne ram was $4000.

Bendigo lamb supreme for sale A BOOLOOLA ewe with a lamb at foot by the stud’s supreme champion White Suffolk ram at the Australian Sheep Breeders’ Association 2014 show at Bendigo will be offered for sale at the White Suffolk Elite show and sale on September 15. The association show will precede it on September 13-14. The Baringhup stud’s principal, Shane Baker, predicted the entry should generate extra interest because of his sire’s success. The outďŹ t will be one of a draft of elite Booloola ewes to be offered at that sale. Three weeks later Booloola will offer about
90 White Suffolk rams at its annual on property sale on Tuesday, October 7. Five in the entry will be specially selected rams. Most sales are made locally to breeders seeking to produce sucker, trade weight or export or heavy export prime lambs from Merino ewes. Mr Baker said Booloola averaged 130 per cent weaned lambs every year so he did not put particular emphasis on selecting rams for multiple birth characteristics. “Unlike the Western District, springs can cut out quite early in this district so breeders near here do not want to be rearing too many lambs, he said. However, he said he
aimed to obtain sires with the best genetics for the family’s 200 ewe strong Booloola and 80 ewe strong Loddon Park studs, whether it be through natural service, embryos or semen and AI. “We are always focused on breed type with particular emphasis on loin width and well muscled legs, he said. Each year the Bakers cull about half their ewe weaners and any older ewes not pulling their weight in the stud. The Bakers started the stud in 1998 with cast for age in lamb ewes from the now defunct Alkoomie stud owned by the Speirs family at Heywood. Showing success came
quickly and the following year the stud’s lambs won a class at the ASBA show at Bendigo. Mr Baker said he did some work at Bendigo sheep sales and had noted the increase in the popularity of White Suffolks. His observations indicated about one third of the lambs there were White Suffolk sired, a bit more than another third were sired by Poll Dorsets and the remaining third were attributable to other breeds. He said Poll Dorsets had lost a bit of ground to White Suffolks because, being slightly woolly around their heads, they collected more than their fair share of troublesome grass seeds in the warmer months.

Passion prevails for architect of show (and tell) By DAVID RIZZOLI

GRAND EXPONENT: Ethel Stephenson tells of her passion for showing her beloved English Leicester sheep, one that she has pursued for three decades.
The Stephensons moved to a much larger property at Benalla where Mr Stephenson set up a Murray Grey stud and she ran her English Leicesters. Mr Stephenson died in 2006 so Ethel sold and moved to a smaller property in the same district Because of the small number of English Leicester studs in Australia (around 16) genetic diver-
sity is an ongoing concern. In 2013 the Ostlers Hill carried out an AI program using New Zealand semen with a resulting lambing percentage of greater than 100 per cent. “Lambing time is my favorite time of the year on the farm,Mrs Stephenson says “and I particularly enjoy going to the shows. This year, as a concession to her advancing
years, she had Nea Burgin parade and hold the sheep at the Bendigo show. But it was Ethel who fussed around the sheep with her shears and scissors to ensure that they presented at their best. “I would not have missed being a sheep farmer for anything, particularly the shows, says this grand dame of the sheep and wool industry.

Bendigo Sheep and Wool Show & Elmore Field days c/05d07193/2714
ETHEL Stephenson’s passion for animals, in particular sheep and their wool, was obvious from the minute Southern Farmer sat down with her at this year’s Sheep and Wool Show at Bendigo in mid July. The sprightly 88 year old from Broken Creek near Benalla had once again taken championship honors with her beloved English Leicesters. Mrs Stephenson ďŹ rst exhibited English Leicesters in 1984 and it is doubtful whether any other exhibitor at the 2014 show could match her record of 30 years of showing without a miss at any sheep show in Australia. She graduated as an architect in 1948 and worked in that profession until she retired in 1976. That was the year that her husband Peter also retired and they moved to a small property at Flinders on the Mornington Peninsula. Mrs Stephenson acquired a small ock of black and colored sheep and threw herself enthusiastically into their breeding. She realised very early on that the only way to be fully involved was to register her sheep and be part of the breed’s development. To further her education, in the late 1970s she enrolled in a course at the Victorian College of Textiles. This led further because as she says,“The more I learned about sheep and wool, the more my interest
developed in stud and pure bred sheep.â€? And the breed that stood out for her was the ancient English Leicester breed which was fast becoming a rare breed. As part of her discovery into the sheep world, Mrs Stephenson travelled to Britain and there met members of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust whose aim is to preserve the genetics of old breeds. Liking the concept she became one of the 2002 foundation members of Heritage Sheep Australia. She registered her Ostlers Hill English Leicester stud in 1984 which currently consists of up to 100 breeding ewes and attended her ďŹ rst ASBA sheep show,“to learn more about sheep and sheep breedingâ€?.

FOR the first time in 58 years the Australian Agricultural Contractors’ Association will not publish suggested rates for various forms of agricultural contracting. It has just published through rural retailers across the region lists of its members and pages listing the jobs contractors undertake with four blank spaces alongside for employers to fill with quotes they get. There is also an explanation of how contractors arrive at their quotes called the bottom line. So to assist members with their pricing the association has developed an on-line spread sheet. Secretary of the AACA and retired agricultural contractor Len Smyth told Southern Farmer it had been too easy for non-member contractors simply to undercut the previously published figures by, say, 10 per cent and the farming community at large feels the prices in the brochure are what members charge. He has been secretary of the AACA for 30 years and remains in that role. What most farmers do not realise is that they could be risking their
farms if they employed part time or what Mr Smyth called gumboot agricultural contractors on a nod, a hand shake, and a ‘she’ll be right mate’. Based at Scotsburn near Ballarat, he spent 30 years as an agricultural contractor and for the first half of that time did business on no more than a handshake. “But business done now by professional agricultural contractors should not be started just by a handshake. “If a problem gets to court, the judge or magistrate will say, ‘Show me the contract, don’t tell me’. “But if the parties can’t, it will be a case of ‘See you later’. “For some time before I did my last quotes, the document I gave my customers was 16 pages long,” he said. He said the 16 pages was derived from association experience and covered such things as a written quote, code of conduct, conditions of service and contract of engagement and copies of his high risk licences. Part of his engagement document put the onus on farmers to clearly mark stump holes, rocky outcrops, bore lines or other obstacles. “I said that if they didn’t
do it and I had an accident they would pay. “But it only happened once when a guy forgot to roll up an electric fence. “It was a heavy fodder crop, I couldn’t see (the wire) and it went straight through the mower and stalled everything. “It was a $50,000 mower conditioner so I rang the dealer and he sent a serviceman out to fix it.” About $2000 later Mr Smyth was back in action and the dealer sent the account straight to the client who paid it. He said he also made a point of telling customers to make sure their insurance policies would cover them for such an eventuality “which they often wouldn’t bother to rectify”. Mr Smyth said the most challenging part of his jobs was convincing farmers their crops were not ready to bale. “But I only had one occasion where I baled it against my convictions and the five by four round bales went as flat as a tack. “Fortunately the man was honorable and paid even though he had instructed me to complete the contract prematurely.” Legal action against AACA members has only arisen about half a dozen
times during Mr Smyth’s tenure as secretary. He said most of those taking actions were absentee landlords who did not fully understand agriculture. “When a contract combination was a gumboot contractor and a lifestyle city based farmer, the result could be disastrous, unless there were written instructions and a contract,” he said. So he has little time for what he calls gumboot contractors, or people who hold down a nine-to-five job, then for example bale a neighbor’s paddock after work, whether it is ready or not. “They often don’t give a continental if the hay’s wet,” he said. “Our guys are conscious, too, of biosecurity and spreading weeds and diseases so they all clean their machines when moving from one farm to another.” Just setting up a machine properly is really the work for a professional. “For example, many people using conditioners in fodder crops don’t know how to set them up properly and the conditioner gets the blame when it’s actually the operator,” Mr Smyth said. His message: take care.

Lardner Park is requesting visitors to enter the site via gate 3. Fodder conservation is extremely important for southern Victorian grazing enterprises, particularly in the dairy industry, so the upcoming day at Lardner Park will be a ‘must-see’ opportunity for farmers. Australia’s hay and silage production totals around $1.5bn, with dairy farmers consuming about 60 per cent of that, so it is critical that they can compare available machinery.

New farm-based training model offers flexibility BEING able to deliver relevant agricultural training courses onfarm is what has helped Andrew Boyd and the team at Agricultural Training Services achieve some great success stories. Together with Wodonga TAFE, they are delivering a new model of farm-based training in certificates III and IV in agriculture. Any person with an interest in furthering their knowledge and skills in farming now has the ability to do so from home or the workplace without the costs associated with travel and time off work, said ATS trainer and assessor Andrew Boyd. Rather than terms and semesters, enrolments are taken all year round, giving students the flexibility required in agriculture. Mr Boyd said that his love of agriculture and 15 years experience - 10 years owning and running a dairy farm and five years in cattle and sheep farming – has helped him deliver better and more extensive training dents. “We train people on-farm so they
T
BEEF
can achieve certificates III and IV in agriculture and we get industry experts in to cover the different aspects,” Mr Boyd said. “To undertake some specific training like AI can normally be quite expensive. “Therefore, we also have the ability to go off-farm to other appropriate facilities for those courses. “For example as far as I am aware, we are the only place that offers a pregnancy testing course.” Mr Boyd said ATS could incorporate short courses that include truck licensing, and chemical users’ courses. Agricultural Training Services offer a broad range of units allowing each employer or individual to tailor their training to suit their needs. Along with a fundamental OH&S unit, students can select units covering beef, dairy, sheep, horses, cropping, irrigation, fencing and machinery. The courses are designed to be flexible so they suit every environment from hobby to broadacre farmers.

Feedlot manures nutrition lesson By KEITH HARRIS BEING located near the Caroona and Killara beef cattle feedlots in northern NSW makes manure a cost-effective and easyto-source option for us and will continue to be a key part of maintaining soil health and structure in Windy Station’s cultivation country. Their manure is used in conjunction with a more traditional fertiliser program and is applied on a rotational basis to one third of our farming country each year. Soil testing of paddocks is routinely undertaken to ensure that any fertiliser program, including manure application is correctly targeted and maintains an optimal nutrient balance. Organic matter helps improve the retention of moisture and nutrients in the soil and is a key part of maintaining optimal crop productivity over the longer term.
FEEDLOT FRIENDLY: Keith Harris is the GRDC’s northern region panellist based at Windy Station, Quirindi, New South Wales.
Therefore, the use of feedlot manure has been a strategic part of achieving that goal by helping replace essential plant nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus as well as trace elements such as zinc while adding organic matter to the soil. There has been a seis-
mic shift in farming practices over the past 20 years driven by our desire to better manage soil, preserve and utilise soil moisture, improve operational efficiencies and boost crop production. These changes have certainly delivered many benefits but they have also
fostered new challenges particularly in the areas of weed, disease and soil nutrition management. It has become imperative that we view our farming systems as a whole and avoid making decisions in isolation as those decisions can have enormous implications for subsequent crops and the longer-term health of our soils. Improving the ecology, structure and productivity of our soils is an important consideration within the farming system at Windy Station. Our farming approach and practices are continuing to evolve in response to challenges – our yearon-year cropping rotation is in the process of moving to a dryland wheat, cotton, sorghum program - to improve stubble-borne disease and weed management. Incorporating a strategic tillage within that rotation once every four years is ideal.

Working a wombat-proof fence FOR the past 10 years, wombats have been a major problem in the Bega Valley in southern New South Wales, burrowing under the landscape and creating dangerous holes, as well as stretching fences and allowing livestock onto other people’s properties. For farmer Robert Burgess, the right combination of fencing has dramatically decreased the issues caused by wombats and made his life less stressful. He runs a 450ha property south west of Bega with his sister Jane, running 500 Merino and Merino cross ewes and 180 Angus cattle. A boilermaker by trade and with Jane working four days a week in Bega, Mr Burgess said it is even more important to have reliable fencing. “You need something you can rely on. “For example we have some sections of fence that were erected in 1967 and they’re still going strong. “After more than 40 years they may look a bit weathered, but structurally you know they’re very sound.” Mr Burgess said it is not uncommon to hear of tractors collapsing into wombat holes.
“I’ve been injured myself, when the quad bike I was driving ran into a large wombat hole. “It could have been really serious, but luckily I got out of it with just some bad bruising,” he said. “We never had wombats in the Bega Valley until about 10 years ago; today they are a really serious problem.” Mr Burgess installed 10km of fences in 2013 and is installing another 10km this year to tackle the wombat problem. The fence will feature MaxY® and Star® posts at a ratio of 1:4 for extra strength. The other main feature of the nine-wire fence is two lines of 2.8mm diameter Longlife® high tensile wire running along the bottom of the fence. The wires are purposely spaced about 10cm apart to enable wombats to waddle through; hopefully preventing them from burrowing underneath and making a mess. Mr Burgess said the high tensile wire will ensure that fence tension won’t be compromised by the impact of wombats. “The bottom two wires will expand when wombats walk through, and then close up to stop sheep

from getting in or out, without losing tension,” he said. This will certainly keep the neighbors smil-
ing, Mr Burgess added. “Good fencing equals happy neighbors and good relationships. It’s as simple as that.”
“If you have good fences stock can’t get through and are sound for many years, neighbors will be happy and so are you.”
Warning tool forecasts mice AS the spring mouse breeding season approaches, grain growers in the southern cropping region are being equipped with a new electronic tool to help them monitor mouse activity and protect their crops. MouseAlert is a new interactive website which allows growers, landholders and advisers to record and view mouse activity in their local area in real time. Data entered will help with prediction of mouse plagues and assist in the timely control of mouse populations. Developed by the Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Centre (IACRC) in partnership with the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), Landcare Research New Zealand, CSIRO, New South Wales Department of Primary Industries and Primary Industries
and Regions South Australia (PIRSA), MouseAlert is being introduced to growers in SA, Victoria and central west NSW at a series of workshops over the coming months. MouseAlert project leader Peter West, of the IACRC and NSW DPI, says the website at www. mousealert.org. au enables farmers to record mouse activity in their local area to inform their community about changes in mouse numbers and damage. “It will also assist growers in determining when to implement control measures in advance of a possible plague,” Mr West said. “It can be used by mobile device users in the field, and a new community facility will enable farmers to create online groups and share their observations of mouse activity among members.”

Chook litter idea turns a new leaf SILVAN Australia has worked with a Longwarry chicken meat producer to develop a poultry litter rejuvenator rotary hoe. It was designed to till the oor material, typically wood shavings or similar, in order to break up large clods and to aerate the material, thereby improving animal comfort and health and to increase productivity. A customised machine with unique features, it is available in two models with working widths of 1.42m (with 28 blades) or 1.62m (with 32 blades) and is designed for use behind tractors in the 15 to 30kW category. To effect the required ďŹ ne till the PLR has a reverse direction drive and rotation rotor with an increased speed (nominally 300 or more RPM). There are also front and rear debris guards to minimise noise and dust including a cushioned tail gate also reducing noise. The PLR also has full length skids that operate

on the usual hard clay under oor of chicken sheds and they provide accurate height control. Silvan spokesman Gavin Wheatcroft says that after one pass through the Longwarry shed litter no clods larger than a 20 cent piece remained
and the chickens quickly returned to pecking and scratching in the tilled litter. “They also were quite unperturbed by the low noise and movement of the tractor and hoe through the shed. Development of the
machine was inspired by the RSPCA releasing its approved farming scheme standards for chickens housed on litter. More information email info@silvan.com.au, call 1300 SILVAN (1300 745 826) or go to www.silvan. com.au.
