A palate for success Seville Estate Winery wins 2019 Winery of the Year Ű

IT was 6pm, and Dylan McMahon was rushing out the office door. It had been a busy day, and he was looking forward to heading home; cooking dinner with his wife, spending time with the kids and maybe enjoying a glass of wine. Cutting across the office on his way out, the phone rang. It was the call vignerons wait a lifetime to receive. Australia’s foremost wine critic, James Halliday, was on the line – personally delivering the message that Seville Winery had been named 2019 Winery of the Year. “It’s not every day the boss of Australian wine reviews gives you a ring,” Dylan said. “We had a bit of small talk – but in the back of my mind I was thinking, what is this about?” Seville Estate was founded in 1972 by Dr Peter and Margaret McMahon, who planted chardonnay, pinot noir, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon cuttings in the red soils of the Yarra Valley. At the time, local winemakers questioned their sanity, with mutterings of shiraz grapes that would never ripen, let alone produce.

Brian Mobbs from High Spa Angus Stud talks family, Angus and life on the farm Q: How long have you been a farmer and what have/do you farm? Our family has owned the original Daylesford farm property since 1965. So I have always had things to do on the land from an early age. We ran a few cattle, grew potatoes and had sheep to shear alongside our then other business pursuits; I became a full time farmer from 1986. The first cattle we had on our farm back in the 1960s were Angus, but at that time our family was focusing its attention on running “Kookaburra Gas, an independent petroleum business. In 1986 we sold our business and decided to get serious about rearing cattle.

We assessed the various cattle breeds on offer, and decided we still could not go past Angus for breeding seedstock. We now run Angus beef cattle, trading as High Spa Angus Stud, on 1500 acres split across three main properties in the Daylesford and Mount Franklin district. Our breeding objective is to breed functional Angus cattle with a balance of growth, fertility and carcase quality, backed with strong performance records. Q: Tell us about your family. My parents Jackson and Netta Mobbs - both now deceased - raised myself, my brother Wayne and my sister Mary in Daylesford with a strong work ethic; strong and loyal fam-

ily values with a love of nature, animals and the land. We all worked together for many years. Now Wayne and I run High Spa Angus Stud, along with our wives Theresa and Rose - and with able assistance from my son Kevin and his son Shannon. In a close family business we all have specific roles and work to our strengths but we are flexible and can pitch in wherever required - it works well. Most of us are keen Essendon supporters and we follow them through good times and bad. Q: Best advice you ever received? The best advice I have ever received has come from the women in my life, my mother,

sister, wife and now my daughters-in-law and my granddaughters - that you can never get back time not spent with your family; so it is important to strike a healthy work/life balance. Q: Describe your perfect day. My perfect day, whether it is wet, fine or even snowing, begins by doing something like taking out a bale of hay to the cows and calves. Out in the paddocks there is just me and the animals as I roll out the hay, talk to the “girls, and check out which calves are showing promise as future stud females or bulls. It might make me smile even more if the Bombers have had a win that weekend.

FAMILY FOCUS: The Mobbs family have farmed their land since the 1960s, and today High Spa Angus is run as a family enterprise – with three generations all employed on the farm.

z Huge sale numbers EARLY September saw one of the largest sales at Bendigo for the month when some 40,000 sheep were penned. The huge spike saw weekly numbers jump by more than 10,000 head. The increase in numbers has been put down to the uncertain season. z Calf prices dip AN Echuca dairy sale saw prices dip as low as $1 per head last month, when a pen of two month old dairy calves struggled to receive a single bid. Bucket reared Friesian steers, aged 6-12 months, sold to a top of $116. z 10 million sold AN unusually busy winter at the Horsham saleyards has seen the centre hit the 10 millionth head sold since it opened at Burnt Creek in 1999. z Drought relief support FARMERS in Gippsland and Northern Victorian irrigation communities will finally be able to access some drought relief after the Victorian Minister for Agriculture, Jaala Pulford, announced $2.6 million in direct support. $1.4 million will go for Drought Infrastructure Grants, to set up stock containment areas, and $1.2 million towards a Drought Employment Program. Further funding will be spent on resilience programs, mental health support and coordination support. z Conditions are tough THE 2018 Dairy Farm Monitor Report has confirmed that dairy farmers are dealing with some of the toughest conditions faced in over a decade, with average profits falling to their lowest levels in 12 years. z Canola into fodder MANY Northern Victorian farmers have decided to cut their canola crops into fodder, taking into account the poor seasonal conditions and rising hay costs. z Stud tops sale BOOLOOLA White Suffolk stud sold the sale top at the recent Bendigo Elite White Suffolk and Suffolk Sale. The Baringhup stud sold Lot 1, a White Suffolk ram, for $14,000.

Blueberry boom prediction Ű

YV Fresh to export 100 tonnes of blueberries this year and into 2020

THE Yarra Valley berry season is just weeks away from beginning and 2018 will be the year of new export markets, according to YV Fresh sales manager Jeff Matthews. Last year, Mr Matthews was part of a contingent who travelled to Asia as part of a tour aimed at making the Indonesian berry exports viable. In 2018, YV Fresh plan to break-even in a break through market; with hopes of sending 15 tonnes of soft fruit - raspberries and blackberries – along with 20 tonnes of cherries and more than 100 tonnes of blueberries this year and into 2020. It is a far cry from the berry company that was founded in 2007 to be a central point for growers in the area. Since then, YV Fresh has grown to represent 25 suppliers nationally. Based in Silvan, the company is a major stakeholder in the Australian Rubus industry, with a large proportion of Australia’s raspberries and blackberries produced by local stakeholders. “The original growers wanted to see their produce more aligned to sell to supermarkets, rather than lots of little individuals,” Mr Matthews said.

“There was no certainty in the business – they didn’t know what the others were asking for, price wise, and YV Fresh was started so that, together, the individual farmers had a bigger presence.” YV Fresh is one of the only grower owned berry cooperatives in Australia. It is spearheaded by Steve Pisin, who reports to the company directors – all of who are berry growers. Mr Matthews’ role is to source, and to sell. “We use a common YV Fresh label – but a pallet of raspberries might have produce from a number of growers, so quality has to be consistent across all growers,” he said. “The growers bring their produce into the warehouse already packed – YV Fresh branded – and they give us a fortnightly volume forecast.” Mr Matthews sources buyers for the fruit – 90 per cent of which goes to Coles, Woolworths and Costco. Each Monday, Mr Matthews quotes the stock available for the three big supermarkets and the price it is worth – by Thursday negotiations are complete, and a forecast of requirements is sent to growers. The season takes off sharp-

the produce to Brisbane, have it treated, and then get it put straight on a plane to export – the logistics of the whole process are a lot to consider,” Mr Matthews said. Adding more than $250 to each pallet of produce, the irradiation treatment does not come cheap. Despite this, the market continues to look promising – according to the 2018 RuralBank Horticultural Annual Review, fresh blueberry consumption has grown slightly from 0.30kg per capita in 2014 to 0.33kg per capita in 2016. Around 41 per cent of Australian households purchased blueberries in 2016. Strawberry exports have grown from 728 tonnes in 2010 to 4197 tonnes in 2017, the majority of which is sent from Western Australia. Around 75 per cent of total expenditure on strawberries comes from one third of the population, with Australian consumers purchasing an average 3.62kg per year. Market wide, Australian fruit exports are estimated to reach $699 million for the 2017 calendar year, up 17 per cent compared to 2016 – although the majority of this is made up of citrus varieties.

try is facing market oversupply at certain times of the season. Like the glut that struck grape growers in the 1990s, new berry farms are popping up across Australia. “We are starting to see supply exceed demand – that puts pressure on prices,” Mr Matthews said. One of the ways around this is to increase export volume.

“We did some trials last season – we sent product to India and Canada,” Mr Matthews said. Canada went surprisingly well, with India not as adept at handling the fruit. “Indonesia is a market with great potential – because of both proximity and consumption,” Mr Matthews said. The problem with successfully exporting berries is that, to arrive with a saleable shelf life, the produce must remain between 2-4 degrees in transit. “They are sent airfreight in a container that is not actually refrigerated, but is lined with dry ice,” Mr Matthews said. “There are a lot of variables with that, from the right amount of dry ice being used to the atmospheric heat. “The transport and logistics are the biggest barriers.” The other obstacle is the need for fruit treatment. Currently, all soft fruit exported to Indonesia must be oUVW WUHDWHG q ZLWK DQ LUUDdiation plant in Brisbane the most practical option. Food irradiation destroys bacteria and pests, and extends the shelf life of food. “To tap into that Indonesian market, we have to truck

Seville Estate Winery wins 2019 Winery of the Year z The vineyard: * Seville Estate sits on 26 acres of vineyard, predominantly southeast facing with elevations up to 220m. * Average rainfall of 750mm allows vines to ripen fruit slowly, providing maximum concentration of flavours. * Soil types vary, from rich organic topsoil over clay / mudstone at lower elevation, and red volcanic soil on higher plantings. * 100 per cent cane pruned vines utilise vertical shoot positioning (VSP) which keeps the canopy open, maximises ripening potential and minimises disease pressure. * Cropping levels vary; chardonnay, shiraz and Riesling around 8 tonnes/ ha, pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon producing around 4 tonnes/ha.

Some 46 years later and their grandson, Dylan, received the highest award on the Australian wine circuit. “I was just astonished - I was gobsmacked; this is the biggest award Seville Estate has ever won – a once in a lifetime award, Dylan said. James Halliday, in the 2019 Halliday Wine Companion, said the vineyard boasted an “absolutely dazzling array of great wines made over the 2015, ’16 and ’17 vintages. In an interview, Mr Halliday DOVR VDLG LW ZDVQ W WKH o UVW WLPH Seville Estate had been noted for its outstanding vintages. “Seville Estate hasn’t now just popped out; it’s been a consistent trophy and gold medal winner from the word go, he said. Seville Estate produces cool-climate wines across 26 acres of vineyard. Owned by a Chinese businessman, Yiping Wang, the foreign ownership has allowed expansion and modernisation – both important in an increasingly competitive domestic market. Over the last 18 months, Mr Wang has purchased the adjoining vineyard and property, established accommodation on-site in the original homestead and built selfcontained apartments. His investment has also allowed Dylan to begin preserving the original clonal material, by grafting the 1972 vine

materials onto phylloxera resistant rootstock. “It’s really important that we preserve the original plantings, Dylan said. “My grandparents started this place, so it’s our heritage. The 2017 vintage is the one that has everyone talking, and Dylan said it had been a benchmark year.

Starting cool, the season was dry with little winter rain – with the Yarra Valley experiencing frosts and even snowfall. A cool and wet spring delayed budburst and flowering, followed by a warm and dry summer – making for ideal flowering and fruit set.

High disease pressure around Christmas was managed with well-timed sprays and canopy management. “For me, some of the highlights are in chardonnay and pinot noir, where delayed vintage enabled the wines to GHYHORS LQWHQVH p DYRXUV DW low baumes - sugar levels and maintain great natural

Black is the new black The Beylor team breed for colour and meat Ĺ°

A DESIRE for equal standing is what turned Steph Bechaz into a sheep breeder. She is no rights activist; rather, Steph has a keen eye for well-structured animals. If they come in pretty colours, so much the better. Steph is one half of the Beylor Black and Coloured Sheep stud team. Run with her brother Ryan, the duo have turned their hobby into a well-regarded enterprise known for its physically correct animals DQG FRORXUHG pHHFHV “We started off a few years ago now; we were introduced to Corriedales through an ag program at Elizabeth Murdoch College in Langwarrin, where we were both students, Steph said. Since then, the pair has grown their breeding herd to 50 ewes, keeping numbers small to retain a tight hold on quality.

Pictured, from left, are the Korumburra winning show team with Bridget Leahy and Grand Champion Lamb Lenni Red 111, Ryan Bechaz with Grand Champion Ewe Millie Red 077 and Steph Bechaz with Grand Champion Ream Myles Red 099.

“We have chosen to focus on the quality of the animals, rather than the quantity, Steph said. Corriedale sheep are a dual purpose breed and is one of the oldest of all the crossbreeds, a Merino-Lincoln cross developed almost simultaneously in Australia and New Zealand in the early 1900s. From page 5 The day features a fleece market, stalls of craft supplies, demonstrations and a parade of handmade garments. It is also the primary selling tool for Beylor Black’s fleeces. Last year, Steph and her brother took 90 bundles – which all sold for around $30/kilo. “It’s a great day out, and where most of our customers first find us, Steph said. “It’s a day for enthusiasts, and an opportunity to see what

other breeders are producing. Although she is as passionate today as when Beylor Black was first started, Steph has no plans to launch it into a commercial enterprise. “Because we don’t run it full time, we can have a stronger say in what we are trying to achieve as we aren’t bound by the markets and trying to make money each week, she said. “We just want a sheep that looks good in the paddock, and has a wool colour that is suited for handcrafts.

Milking for Mental Health NO SHAME IN HELP: Matt is a share farmer from West Gippsland, who has learnt that his farm and family are what keeps him strong, both mentally and physically.

From head chef to chief milker

This is Matt’s story This story is re-printed from the Gippsland Jersey Calendar as part of the Southern Farmer’s on-going commitment to mental health awareness MATT, a share farmer in West Gippsland, has researched mental illness and is excited to share what he has discovered through not just research, but his own personal journey. Diagnosed with depression and prescribed anti-depressants, Matt says he’s now p \LQJ KLJK “I’m not cured, but I’m on my way to mending myself,” he said. He’s found a distinct cor-

relation between his mental state, his diet, alcohol consumption and medication. When all of these are in balance, his healthy body and mindset work together. Once a head chef working all over the world and in many different kitchens, Matt is now at his happiest on the farm with his wife, Caroline, and their two children. Matt describes two significant times from his past that he believes were the catalysts for him seeking help with his mental health; the first occurred in England, when he had an altercation with a waiter, and later, home in Australia, when Matt said he felt like crying every time a customer came in for a meal. “Depression is a dirty word

to some, but I don’t believe it is,” he said. “It’s a mental illness. “I believe some people have it and don’t even know about it. “The more people can talk about it, the better. “Looking back, I knew I’d had depression for years - I just wasn’t aware of it at the time.” Matt knows that with the HEE DQG p RZ RI WKH YHU\ QRU mal emotions associated with life as a dairy farmer, he’ll be able to now manage. His constant drive to provide for his family and work the farm that needs him keeps him on the right track. Matt is an advocate for being healthy, both physically and mentally, and letting people know it’s ok to seek help.

GRDC Panel headed to your local region A DIVERSITY of farming systems, rainfall zones, cropping constraints and profit growth opportunities for grain growers will be on the radar for the Grains Research and Development Corporation’s (GRDC) Southern Region Panel during its annual spring tour this month. This year, the tour will include visits to Bridgewater, Ballarat, Ararat, Tatyoon, Lake Bolac, Skipton, Derrinallum and Geelong, where GRDC staff will meet with growers, researchers, advisers, farming systems groups, agribusiness and other grains industry specialists. Panel chair John Bennett says the tour, which began last month, will be of enormous value to the panel and GRDC staff - who will visit growers’ properties, research facilities and institutions, trial sites and downstream enterprises.

“The tour serves an important function in terms of developing a greater understanding of issues facing growers and identifying research, development and extension (RD&E) priorities, Mr Bennett said. “It also enables us to assess first-hand the impact and relevance of GRDC investments in RD&E in the regions. Mr Bennett says spring tour participants will be exposed to barriers to profitability across a range of rainfall zones that not only affect growers in Victoria, but have broader relevance across the entire southern cropping region which also includes South Australia and Tasmania. “We will be discussing with growers various production issues they are dealing with in their farming systems – from

constraints in irrigated cropping programs, through to the impact of this year’s dry growing season in many areas, as well as subsoil amelioration, soil acidity, precision agriculture and optimising canola yields, Mr Bennett said. Two new members of the panel will be on their first spring tour this year. They are grain growers Michael Chilvers, from Nile in Tasmania’s northern midlands, and Andrew Russell, from Browns Plains in north eastern Victoria. They will be on tour with Mr Bennett and other existing panel members Michael McLaughlin (deputy chair), Peter Kuhlmann, Fiona Marshall, Jon Midwood, Rohan Mott, Richard Murdoch, Kate Wilson and Brondwen MacLean (GRDC general manager representative), as well as GRDC staff.

Drought tolerant canola lines identified SOME 14 lines of canola have been identified with an ability to cope with heat and/ or drought stress, potentially having a broad reaching effect across the drier parts of Australia.

Drought and heat stress impact significantly on Australia’s $1.7 billion canola industry, and high temperatures could halve the yield potential of some varieties currently grown.

Canola lines identified during the research included those with good tolerance to drought, moderate tolerance to both drought and heat, and those with the ability to recover well from drought or heat.

HAY AND SILAGE

Page 12, Southern Farmer

Harvest, hay or graze It’s time for farmers to make the call COMPARED with previous drought scenarios, mixed farmers in southern Australia are currently making decisions on the future of cereal and oilseed crops in an era of high livestock prices. Kirrily and Greg Condon, mixed farming agronomists from Grassroots Agronomy, have been working through the harvest, hay or grazing decision making process. “Options vary between continuous croppers and mixed farmers but the key factor is to develop a plan, understand the logic behind it and follow it through, Greg said. “Making a call and sticking with it is crucial for mental wellbeing during dry times given external pressures from media and neighbours. After fully assessing a crop’s current dry matter and harvest yield potential, Greg recommends producers weigh up the following factors: Utilisation: Mixed farmers need to consider how the hay or standing crop (if it is to be grazed off) will be utilised to increase returns in their livestock enterprise and is their system set up to maximise the benefit. Practicalities: Continuous croppers

(with no livestock) should assess their ability to make, store and market good quality hay particularly if they are relying on contractors and selling into the open hay market. “Timeliness of hay making, weather damage and a potential shift in value are all risks, he said. Economics: The real potential of the crop to be either turned into hay or allowed to go through to harvest. “There are crops which don’t have 2.5t/ha of dry matter on offer, which would be better suited to grazing or even spraying out if weed pressure is high, Greg said. Calculations by Grassroots Agronomy show 2.5t/ha of canola hay with a value of $250/t (with $188/ ha hay production costs) is equal to 0.85t/ha of harvested canola at $600/t (with $103/ha harvest costs). Greg recommends looking at other resources to help make a well informed call, including the Agriculture Victoria Grain versus Hay Calculator, and other tools such as the ‘feed budgeting and dry matter in crops tools and calculators developed during the Grain and Graze program’, to name a few.

How to get the best from fertiliser usage A COLUMN PROVIDED BY ALTERNATIVE GROWING SOLUTIONS HEATING UP: Grain growers are being advised to clean their grain storages before summer arrives.

TO get a good, positive result from fertiliser usage your soil needs to have active soil biology, as it is the biology within the soil that helps the chemical fertiliser to work, not the other way around. Soil tests usually measure the main macro-nutrient levels in the soil and a handful of other soil properties. This often creates the impression that it is the levels of these measured parameters which are the biggest contributors to soil fertility. This is only partly correct. Virtually all nutrient transfers between the soil and plant roots are mediated by soil biological processes. As a result, if a farmer seeks better growth and production, it is not simply a matter of applying more fertiliser to add more nutrients to the soil. Equally vital, and perhaps of more importance, is that the soil food web (biology) is maintained in a healthy, vigorous state. If sensible and sustainable farm management practices have been adopted on the farm, then most of the time it is likely that the soil food web will be in a healthy condition. It is important to either maintain this situation or if necessary, correct it. Both ends are achieved and soil biological activity is enhanced by the addition of

Clean up grain storages before temperatures rise GRAIN growers are advised to closely monitor their grain storages over the coming weeks as increasing temperatures are likely to stimulate stored grain insect pest activity. Grain remaining on-farm from the previous harvest is a common breeding ground for pests, so growers are encouraged to regularly monitor stored grain and clean up any grain residues. The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) Grain Storage Extension Project manager, Chris Warrick, says early detection of grain pests allows them to be identified, treated appropriately and removed before they spread and become a much larger problem. “Grain residues in storages

or older grain stocks held over from last season provide ideal breeding sites for pests,” says Mr Warrick. “Meticulous grain hygiene combined with structural treatments, such as diatomaceous earth (DE), can play a key role in reducing the number of stored grain pests.” Mr Warrick said effective grain hygiene requires complete removal of all waste grain from storages and equipment. “Pests only need a small amount of grain for survival, and those surviving populations can quickly multiply and spread when conditions start to warm up,” he said. “One bag of infested grain can produce more than one million insects during a year, and these can easily move to

other grain storages where they will start new infestations. “Regular inspection of storages and equipment where grain is present is important – if any pest infestations are detected, they can be controlled before pests spread.” Pests can be commonly found in empty silos and grain storages, aeration ducts, augers and conveyers, harvesters, field bins and chaser bins, left-over bags of grain, trucks, spilt grain around grain storages, seed grain and stockfeed grain. Mr Warrick said practical information and advice on grain storage pest identification and treatment is available via the GRDC’s comprehensive stored grain information hub at www. storedgrain.com.au.

food sources favoured by the soil biology. I come across a number of farmers/growers who tell me that the effect of their fertiliser regime appears to have less and less effect on their crop/ pasture. I wonder how active the biology is in their soil. On the other hand, I supply farmers/growers who have good biologically active soils who report that when they need to apply a chemical fertiliser they use about 25 -40 per cent of the recommended rate and achieve 100 per cent result from use.

One such Korumburra dairy farmer used a blend of CMP (Calcium, Magnesium and Phosphate) and NFG (biologically active granule plus trace minerals) to grow barley in June 2018. This farmer used 920kg of blended fertiliser over 5.5 hectares applied ’down the tube’ at planting time. The barley was up and growing within 18 days and four weeks later the results are as seen. 7R o QG RXW KRZ \RX FDQ JHW the same results, ring Graeme from Alternative Growing Solutions on 0419 960 485.

The way forward for Corriedale studs By MILTON SAVAGE WE believe that a true dual purpose Corriedale is a very productive, profitable sheep. We are concerned that some breeders of the Corriedale appear to be mainly trying to breed just the biggest sheep they possibly can, but forgetting about structure, and the many strong attributes of the dual purpose of the Corriedale which should be the first priority. The aim at Gambier View and Compton House is to produce a structurally correct sheep that will be able to live and be productive for many years.

The older ewes weigh from 80kg to 115kg, which are large enough, but this size is needed to achieve our goals. We then focus on quick growing meaty sheep, for two reasons – one, to produce as much meat and as quickly as possible. The second being to lamb the one year old ewes down at 13 months of age, which need to be at 70 to 80kg of weight, at lambing. We are achieving large conception rates, good lambing percentages, quick growth rates, and large wool cuts. We used semen from New Zealand rams for a couple of years, and we were finding that

we were losing a bit in wool cuts and in the lustre of the wool. This year we used some older Gambier View and Compton House semen that has been stored, to obtain these attributes back. This year the ewes - a combination of stud and flock - cut 6.85kg of wool a head, at an average micron of 27.6 - this micron was for the older sheep only. The top price achieved was 810 cents for 26 micron fleece. Another positive of the Corriedale is the strong hardy black feet that are attributes of the breed that Gambier View and Compton House value.

Healthier livestock means a better bottom line HEALTHY, thriving livestock certainly help deliver a better bottom line to growers, and one of the best ways to optimise animal health is to ensure they have the essential nutrients needed for maximum vitality. This is the goal of the Nutrimin range of liquid mineral supplements, formulated to target and correct trace elements that can commonly be

August cattle exports were just under 108,000 head, bringing the year-todate total to 680,000 head, as highlighted in the latest edition of LiveLink. The August exports represented the largest monthly shipment this calendar year, supported by the commencement of second-round musters across northern Australia and the ongoing drought conditions in Queensland. Monthly exports out of Townsville also hit a threeyear high in August. In sheep news, the northern hemisphere summer hiatus for Australian sheep exports continued in August, with just an air consignment to Singapore, totalling under 4000 head and timed for the Korban festival. Sheep exports to the Gulf region are likely to re-commence in October, however, no further shipments are anticipated to Turkey given the economic turmoil and currency crisis making the trade unviable for importers. In the absence of Australian sheep exports, the Gulf countries are sourcing stock from a range of other suppliers. Qatar and Kuwait are reported to be sourcing sheep from Somalia, Sudan and Armenia, while Romanian sheep have supported the shortfall in Jordan, and Israel has been procuring sheep from Portugal.

WoodShield – lasting through the years GRAPE growers in Australia began training their vines along rope, attached to bush timber posts. Generations later, they moved onto treated CCA timber posts, and some now use steel. Mr Davidson says the idea came from a group of passionate wine drinkers, who just happened to be involved in the plastics industry. They wanted to solve the ongoing problem of broken treated trellis posts - and the sustainable polymer coated timber post was born. “We can go right from taking a dripper tube/irrigation off a vineyard, recycle it and put it back out on a post, Mr Davidson said. “Then in 50 plus years, the tested

WEIGH IT UP: Gallagher’s new TWR-5 range of weigh scales and EID readers are simple to use with a large screen readout.

Intuitive technology allows for accuracy and ease of use THROUGHOUT the design and testing phase of each new product, the Gallagher research and development team undertake a series of on-farm discussions with product users. These valuable insights provide the backbone to the simplicity and rugged nature of the final product available to the market. The latest in the range of Gallagher weighing and EID products is the TWR-5 Weigh Scale and EID Tag Reader. Already the winner of multiple design awards, the TWR-5 has revolutionised the weighing and EID market – providing a tough, farm ready

weigh scale with the ability to read EID tags while eliminating any complexity. Performance conscious farmers, like livestock manager Mark Howard from Duaringa Station, are provided with an innovative system that is reliable, accurate but also very simple to use. “The TW-3 is not one of these where you have to spend three or four days in the office after you’ve finished mustering, Mr Howard said. “The screen is huge and clear - the unit is really good if you don’t know something too: you can click on screens and it will actually take you through it – and you can’t

muck anything up; it’s unreal that way.â€? Geoff Oliver, from Englewood Park in Victoria, finds the accuracy of the Gallagher weighing and EID range to be unbeatable. “With the HR5, there are no mistakes‌ your accuracy is tremendous,â€? he said. “Moving to EID tags means we can easily manage individual animal data - it gives us a way to very quickly identify the sheep that aren’t producing.â€? Wandin’s 49 years, and still going strong IN 2018, the Wandin Silvan Field Days Committee will host its 49th annual field days event. This premier agricultural event of the greater Yarra Valley region is a unique farm field days - with a strong horticultural theme focusing on the needs of intensive farming systems including orchards, vineyards, robus growers, commercial nurseries, hobby farmers and others. Current president, William Anker, son of the inaugural committee secretary, John Anker, is very much looking forward to continuing to increase the profile and maintaining the high interest in this significant local event. He emphasises that “the event provides the perfect showcase for machinery, irrigation, farm inputs and a multitude of other items specific to specialised crops”. “It is the ideal opportunity for local and regional business to make direct contact with their target audience,” he said. “With everything on show from workboots to whipper snippers, ride-on mowers to sawmills, tractors, tools and tyres, worm farms, water tanks and welders, fertilisers, forklifts and fence posts. “Gumboots and government departments, motor vehicles and camping gear – right down to homemade cakes and hot coffee – there is something of interest for everyone from any of the numerous exhibitors at the Wandin Silvan Field Days.” There are few other field day events with this specific focus in Victoria, and the Wandin-Silvan Field Days commonly attracts patrons not only from the local area, but those further afield across regional Victoria. The ‘Lifestyle and Information’

IN THE FAMILY: William Anker is the president of the Wandin Silvan Field Days Committee, and is looking forward to the group’s 49th event. Pavilion compliments and extends the ‘General Interest’ section which has been a long-standing success at the field days. On display this year will be a wide range of local regional products and services, along with demonstrations of cottage industries. Always a popular feature at Wandin, a working presentation and display of machinery of yesteryear will be featured by the Yarra Valley Machinery Preservation Society – a feature attracting enthusiasts in its own right. An added attraction will be the attendance of Black Snake Productions – featuring an educational and informative interactive display and talks – along with students from Mt Lilydale Mercy College who will be hosting their annual Pet Show.

The Wandin Silvan Field Days continues as a not-for-profit organisation. It is operated and run by a committee of local volunteers, some of who have a history dating back to the first event. The Field Day fosters community involvement with local schools and community groups providing catering and other services as their major fundraising opportunity. Local CFA brigades continue to play a key role in the manning of gates and parking duties, and much of the proceeds are donated directly back to them and other local community organisations. “The Wandin Silvan Field Days has long recognised the importance of the role that the CFA plays in the community,” Local CFA

volunteer Geoff Peacock said. “We are very pleased to continue our involvement with the field days which forms one of our major annual fundraisers for the constant upgrading of our equipment.” “Our committee understands the importance of farming in Victoria, and in particular that of the greater Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges, and we are very proud to maintain the tradition of being able to present this major regional event,” Mr Anker said. With the continued support of so many, the 49th Wandin Silvan Field Days promises to be another great success. The Redshed – Melbourne’s biggest stockist of outdoor power equipment THE RedShed has been offering Australia’s biggest range of outdoor power equipment at the best prices for over 17 years – helping tens of thousands of people find the right machine to get the job done. The RedShed’s expert team is coming to this year’s Wandin Silvan Field Days to showcase the latest innovations in outdoor power equipment making those outdoor chores even easier. Splitting firewood made easier: z Check out RedGum’s newest splitter - the Deluxe Lifter Splitter, which makes using a log splitter easier. Not only does it have a money back guarantee that it will split your wood, it also lifts the log up off the ground to assist putting the log into the splitting position for you - no more back strain. Watch The RedShed demonstrating this wood splitter during the Wandin Silvan Field Days, and see for yourself just how easy splitting firewood has become. For those of you who already have a log splitter, the RedShed will be demonstrating RedGum’s latest accessory – the log splitter turn table. The table sits on top of any splitter that splits in a vertical position and allows you to turn the log with minimal effort. Mowing lawns - made easier with Robotic Mowers:

IT doesn’t matter if you are a five year old John Deere enthusiast or a tractor mad teenager – there is something for everyone at Wandin Silvan. With more than 150 exhibitors, there is knitting for those who have an interest, brand new Toyotas and plenty of mowers – plus everything in between. A favourite with families is the Black Snake Productions wildlife show – which features lots of the slithery creatures that will make everyone squirm. For the horse mad in the household, there are plenty of sites – from the latest gear to plastic fencing, retail outlets to new shed complexes. Once Dad has finished checking out the ag equipment, there is still plenty more to see and do. Aside from all the livestock, there are cars, motorbikes and even things that you wouldn’t expect to find – worm farms, sawmills and good old fashioned country outfitters. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter your age, sex or area of interest - you will find something you like at this year’s Wandin Silvan Field Days.

Are you burning-off safely? Each year CFA crews are called out to assist many people whose burn-offs have got out of control. There are a few simple things you need to do before, during and after burning-off to ensure that you are doing so safely.

Have you checked your council’s Local Law in regards to when and where you can burn off?

You need to check your councils website for Local Laws to ensure you are allowed to burn off. Your council may have regulations and certain days that you can burn.

Have you checked the weather?

Check weather forecasts for the day of your burn-off and a few days afterwards. If it is too windy it is recommended that you postpone your burn off. Also check that it won’t be too windy on following days as the wind can reignite your burn.

VISIT THE TEAM: The RedShed team will be at this year’s Wandin Silvan Field Days. Visit them for a look at the very latest and greatest in outdoor equipment. Pictured are RedShed team members, Bianca and Michael Pollock. z In addition to having the largest range of Husqvarna Ride-On Mowers, the RedShed is also proud to present the future of mowing - the Husqvarna robotic Automower. Go to RedShed’s Wandin Field Day site to see for yourself how this little battery powered robot cuts the grass for you – you’ll never have to mow your lawn again. Finding power during blackouts made easier: z The RedShed will also have a great range of

generators on display during the field days, including the Honda generator range. If you want to talk to someone about how a generator can keep your lights on during a blackout, make sure you visit the RedShed site. If you’re looking for a ride-on mower, chainsaw, log splitter, UTV, brush cutter, pole saw, generator, pressure washer, battery powered equipment, protective clothing, accessories - the RedShed is the place to go.

Do you have an adequate water supply?

You need to have enough water to extinguish a possible outbreak. It is recommended that you have either access to a hose or at least 10 litres of water on hand.

Clean up around your burn site.

Create a 3 metre clearance of all flammable material around your whole burn off site.

Have you registered your burn off?

Register your burn off by calling 1800 668 511.

Have you notified your neighbours?

Ensure you are considerate of your neighbours when burning off. Notify them if you are in close proximity and the smoke may affect them.

Have you put it out properly?

Make sure there are enough people to monitor, contain and extinguish your burn off safely and effectively. Ensure that your burn off is 100% out before you leave it.

This will ensure that the CFA won’t be called out unnecessarily to your burn off.

TOTAL FIRE BAN DAYS

FIRE DANGER PERIOD

All fires in the open air for burning off are banned during Total Fire Ban Days. Any permits issued by the Municipal Fire Prevention Officer are suspended for the duration of any Total Fire Ban Days.

You can only burn off if you have a written permit issued by the Municipal Fire Prevention Officer or the CFA District Office.

Dandenong Mowers All Terrain makes the job easier DO you have areas on your property you think are inaccessible - places where no other mowers have been able to reach? If that’s the case, the Razorback All Terrain Mower is for you – proudly stocked by Dandenong Mowers.

Made in Japan from extremely heavy-duty componentry, the Razorback Brushcutter is a 4WD mower, ranging from 14HP – 22HP, which cuts down grass and brush up to 36mm thick. The Razorback features a shaft drive deck, which allows

almost complete transfer of horsepower to the cutter deck, through a shaft that has universal joints at both ends. This unique deck means no belt hassles, and the deck has the ability to absorb a much higher level of impact. Another standout feature are

the specialised blades - forged from Hirosaki Steel, they can withstand extremely hard rock, causing little or no damage to the blade. All Razorback models are deliberately designed to have a very low centre of gravity, for steep incline work, result-

ing in an industry leading EU certification for up to 30 degree slopes. If your terrain isn’t quite so extreme, but you are still after a beautiful, manicured finish, then the Walker Mower is the one for you. Walker Mowers are an out

front, zero-turn mower, well known for their unique Walker GHS - Grass Handling System - that produces a superior, vacuumed lawn finish. Compact and manoeuvrable, the Walker ZTR Mower will get into tight places quickly and efficiently.

FOR over 10 years, Black Snake Productions have provided educational, fun and interactive wildlife presentations to help conserve Australia’s unique wildlife. Over the past 10 years, the company has put on wildlife presentations and displays using an amazing array of animals and engaging techniques. Founder of Black Snake Productions and wildlife educator, Michael Alexander, has more than ten years’ experience in the animal industry. “Black Snake Productions was started in 2006 after many years travelling around Australia teaching wildlife education, and seeing first hand habitats and species disappearing,” Mr Alexander said. “I saw a need for a more hands on approach to conservation - with Black Snake Productions, I am able to fulfil a passion for wildlife conservation that has always driven me to work with the amazing animals found throughout Australia.” Mr Alexander’s interest in wildlife goes further back than just his public career – starting from an early age when he would find garden skunks, tree frogs and blue tongue lizards in the garden. “The constant desire to learn more about our wildlife led me to seeking out some of the best reptile and wildlife experts in Victoria to mentor

HSV Chevrolet Silverado Aggressive looks, aggressive engine, aggressive road presence HOT on the heels of the introduction of the all-new Colorado Sports Cat, HSV have released full specifications for its Chevrolet Silverado heavy-duty truck range. Power, payload and towing capability are what Silverado is famous for - and all these attributes will be reflected in the five-model 4x4 Crew Cab line-up that HSV will offer. All five vehicles share the same impressive heavy-duty equipment; including Allison 1000 6-speed automatic transmission and a Duramax 6.6L Turbo Diesel V8 engine producing 332kw and 1234nm of torque. The line-up starts with the 2500HD WT – simply short for “work truck”. The “WT” embodies strength, capability and advanced technology to ensure the job gets done with ease. In addition to the mechanical highlights listed above, the “WT” also features StabiliTrak, a stability control system with Proactive Roll Avoidance and Traction Control which also includes Electronic Trailer Sway Control and Hill Start Assist. Cabin comfort extends to dark ash colours, with jet black interior accents and a front (40/20/40) splitbench seat for a total 6-seat capacity. The Chevrolet MyLink audio system includes a 7” colour touchscreen, 6-speaker sound system, USB ports and an auxiliary input jack. Air conditioning and a Driver Information Centre deliver added conveniences, while front and sideimpact airbags and head curtain and side-impact airbags for the front and

BIG BOY TOY: HSV have released the full specifications for their Chevrolet Silverado range.

Classic machinery on display A VERY popular attraction at the Wandin Silvan Field Days is the display of machinery of yesteryear, and the Yarra Valley Machinery Preservation Society will once again feature a working display of their restored machinery for visitors to peruse. Many hours and much care has been devoted to the restoration of the machinery, and the members are happy to share their stories and discuss the features of their displays. *****

rear outboard seating positions, offer added confidence. Other conveniences include tinted windows, remote keyless entry, remote locking tailgate, rear vision camera and heated power-adjustable exterior mirrors. The 2500HD LTZ model steps it up another gear. From an exterior styling perspective, the LTZ model features front fog lamps and 18” chrome alloys, with the chrome theme extending to the body side mouldings and door handles. Interior-wise, the LTZ is presented with a host of impressive features that justify its premium positioning. Perforated leather-appointed bucket seats offer personalised comfort for the driver and front pas-

senger, and feature heated and ventilated seat cushions and seatbacks, 10-way power seat adjusters, 2-way power lumbar control and 2-position driver memory. Dual zone automatic climate control enhances cabin comfort. Power-adjustable pedals allow the driver to sit at the most comfortable position, while the vehicle’s remote start also includes a theftdeterrent functionality. A leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise controls, and steering wheel rake and reach adjustment add to driver comfort and convenience as does the Chevrolet MyLink audio system which includes an 8” diagonal, full-colour touchscreen that allows you to easily navigate radio content, multi-media

devices and phone connectivity. But of the five Silverado models to be available, the company expects greatest demand to be for the “Midnight” and “Custom Sport” editions. Taking street presence to an all-new level, the Midnight edition performs as aggressively as it looks. Based off the 2500HD LTZ, and offered exclusively in black, the product story extends to aggressive styling and unique content. When a little less aggression, and a touch more sophistication is preferred, the Custom Sport edition is built to make a stylish statement. Like the Midnight edition, the Custom Sport edition is based off the 2500HD LTZ model but is offered exclusively in Summit White - with many additional features.

THE ever popular General Interest Marquee will once again provide a forum for a diverse range of local crafts and produce, covering everything from knitting to cooking. Arts and crafts, patchwork, lavender products, Tupperware, ladies and children’s clothing and confectionery will feature, along with demonstrations such as weaving and blacksmithing. Perhaps you’ve always wanted to know the secrets of country cooking, or have long held an interest in the way a forge heats a traditional horse shoe – all of these questions and more can be answered in the Wandin Silvan Field Day General Interest Marquee.

BUILT TO LAST: Australian built 7” wood chipper designed and manufactured in Melbourne.

Built tough, built Chipstar

CHIPSTAR Australia, a family company based in Melbourne, has been designing and manufacturing wood chippers for 25 years. The phrase “built tough built to last” certainly applies, as some of the very original machines are still going strong. In addition, Chipstar imports top quality European chip-

pers and mulchers which have proven time and again they can handle a variety of Australian materials. The product range covers sizes from 50mm/2” all the way to 400mm/15¾” - both for domestic and commercial use, powered by their own engines, electric or tractor powered; PTO.

Recent innovations include the new Vortex drum chipper with an in-feed neck of 6” x 16”, with the Chipstar design team currently working on a 12” version with a bottom feed conveyor and a 33” wide neck. A new trailer mounted chipper/shredder with a 90mm/3½” chipping capacity, with its own feed roller and auto-feed will

also be launched shortly. The team at Chipstar are constantly developing new products – and are more than happy to discuss individual needs for each business. For more information, contact the Chipstar team on 9761 4486 or you can go to the website at www.chipstar. com.au.

BERENDS AND AGPOWER: Agpower will again be at this year’s Wandin Silvan Field Days, with their complete range of Berends Implements. Pictured is Warren Storey during the 2017 event.

Berends and Agpower A winning combination JOHN Berends is the kind of company you feel good about buying from. There are no cheap imports, no hastily slapped together implements – instead, Berends is a company that has carved out a reputation for quality over 50 years of operation. Started in 1966 by John Berends at a weatherboard house in Narre Warren, the company began manufacturing grader blades, rippers, car trailers and carryalls. Within eight years, the business moved to bigger premises until, in 1978, it opened at its current location on the Frankston-Dandenong Road.

John Berends Implements quickly became a favourite with farmers who were chasing someone that would stand by their products. In 1997, after completing a Bachelor of Agricultural Science and working in the vegetable seed industry for several years, John’s son Derrick joined the business as general manager. Always a family affair, Derrick’s wife Meredith brought her skills as an agricultural and resource economist to the business in 1998. Since then, the company has continued to expand – and now includes a large

retail showroom and factory workspace – complete with welding robots and a high speed plasma cutter. In a world where cheap imports are the norm, it is nice to find a company that still makes everything inhouse, and stands by all their products. With over 50 years’ experience in the agricultural business, Berends is the benchmark in Australian agricultural machinery. This year, Agpower, proud stockists of Berends Equipment, will be at the Wandin Silvan Field Days – so call in and see what farm implement can make your life easier.

Aussie Pumps roll out at field days across the state AUSTRALIAN Pump Industries have reported a huge response to their “drought buster program”, being offered at field days across the country. Record sales of Aussie’s big transfer pumps highlight the need to move water fast and efficiently in drought ravaged areas. With the Wandin Silvan Field Days being held from October 12-13, Rodwells have stocked up on these favourites. The big pumps -available in 3”, 4” and 6” configurations - are available with Honda petrol engines, or a range of diesels that represent fuel economy and long life. The big

pumps are all part of the Aussie ‘Quick Prime’ range of self-primers. The pumps will suck water through a vertical lift of up to 8.4 metres, a record in terms of pump design and technology. “Being able to lift water from wells, streams or creek beds for filling tankers, or transferring water from dam to dam is a huge factor in keeping livestock going,” Hayden Coombes, from Rodwells, explained. “The big pumps mean huge fuel savings. “We’ve seen farmers trying to transfer water from one dam to another to maximise water efficiency

using a lightweight, low horsepower firefighting pump. “That means refuelling the pump, sometimes up to four or five times, restricting the flow with the consequent friction losses through the pipe - some using only a 1” hose or pipe for transfer - with consequent loss of efficiency.” The big Aussie pumps can move water fast with flows of up to 2900 litres per minute. “These pumps will pump water seven times faster than a small petrol engine drive fire pump,” Mr Coombes said. “They have great efficiency in

terms of litre per water pumped per litre of fuel expended.” The company’s range of fire pumps, the Aussie ‘Fire Chief’ and its big brother, the ‘Mr T’ twin impeller, have also been a big hit at field days. “Farmers looking for quality and value for money will go with the Aussie Fire Chief every time,” Mr Coombes said. “It’s the only pump on the market with a five year warranty and every machine comes with either steel carry frame or steel skids and antivibration mounts. “The big belly body just moves water faster, more efficiently and

primes first time every time.” Rodwells is also showcasing its brand new range of ‘Super Scud’ pressure cleaners. These machines are faster, smarter and safer than any in the world - and are already proving a hit, not just in Australia but overseas. “We’re proud of our Australian designed and built machines and the way we are able to export them against the big multi nationals, and beat them on their own turf,” Brad Farrugia, from Aussie Pumps, said. For more information on the products featured contact Rodwells or Aussie Pumps.
