Free-range born from Black Saturday

By EMMA OLIVER ON the day of Black Saturday, Diego Tuyol chose to stay and defend, a decision he feels he should not have made in retrospect. Old Farm Happy Valley is located on the King Parrot Creek, 450 acres of farmland rising either side of the Whittlesea-Yea Road, just beyond the Hazeldene Store. The creek gurgles through the property, and the lush o HOGV TXLFNO\ UROO LQWR VWHHS bush covered hills. It is idyllic and beautiful, and a death trap. 2Q WKH GD\ RI WKH o UHV Diego attempted to bring his animals down from the hills to the home paddock, to his sheds and the old farmhouse. “There was no time for tears, no time to think, my animals were here and I didn’t want to lose them, Diego said. %XW WKH p DPHV ZHUH PRY LQJ WRR TXLFNO\ DQG WKH KHDW so intense, that 48 cows and all his goats perished. Surrounded by carnage, Diego fought to save what he had left - the farm’s infrastructure.

Hours alone, he doused with water and tackled spot o UHV KLV ZRUOG EXUQLQJ around him. It would eventually pass and Diego would make his way to Yea, blackened and bleeding, dressed in only shorts and a singlet. He would be taken to hospital, and face a decade of health problems and issues from that catastrophic day. It is from these ruins and the ongoing repercussions of his decision that Old Farm Happy Valley was born. Having lost faith in everything and traumatised from battling to save his farm all by himself, chickens became his outlet. Before Black Saturday, Diego had never had chickens but with an incubator and 24 eggs he began his new enterprise - free-range eggs. Intent on keeping his mind occupied and unable to sleep DIWHU WKH o UH 'LHJR ZRXOG VLW up at night and research and design. “I wanted to come up with something special, Diego said.

And that’s what he did. Shade cloths dot the lush green paddocks, strategically placed to allow chickens cover and security for their daily dust bath ablutions. Intricate sprinkler systems are positioned throughout the enclosure providing fresh drip water for the chickens, DQG ZHW UHOLHI DQG EXVKo UH protection during the hot summer months. A massive A-frame chicken tractor dominates the view, a work in progress as Diego has great plans for this chicken shelter. The fencing is all Diego’s handiwork and is a complex system allowing for an external pen that moats the HOHFWULo HG FKLFNHQ SDGGRFN Maremmas are kept in the external pen to discourage predators. And though wedgetails remain a problem, he has not experienced any of the losses he previously did to foxes. “Before I designed this enclosure I lost 800, 900 birds to foxes, Diego said. “I lost a lot of money because I was learning.

Winter chill gives canola disease a leg-up ALTHOUGH the summer weather is well and truly on its way, southern region farmers are being warned to be on the lookout for canola crop disease. Prolonged cool conditions over the last few months have favoured the progression of blackleg upper canopy infection (UCI) in canola crops across south eastern Australia. Oilseeds disease expert Steve Marcroft, of Marcroft Grains Pathology, says the incidence of UCI this year has been widespread. “Infection has been reported in canola crops from South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula right

across into Victoria and up through southern New South Wales, Dr Marcroft said, whose research into canola diseases is through Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) investments. “While blackleg UCI has become increasingly prevalent over recent years, its presence normally drops away as we move into August and temperatures start to rise. “But this year the extended cool conditions have favoured the progression of the disease WKURXJK WR WKH VWDUW RI p RZHULQJ y Many growers have been, and

Field experiments have shown that blackleg UCI – a collective term that describes infecWLRQ RI p RZHUV SHGXQFOHV SRGV upper main stem and branches – can cause yield losses of up to 30 per cent. THE world’s appetite for Australian fruit, nuts and vegetables has skyrocketed with Australian produce exports reaching almost $2.8 billion for the first time. According to new data, released last month by Global Trade Atlas, the figures show that interest in Australian horticulture exports have steadily grown with the latest result showing a 27 per cent increase on the 2017-2018 financial year. Australian nut exports have cracked $1 billion in export value, while table grape exports surpassed the half a billion dollar mark reaching $555 million. The trade value for almonds

alone reached $675 million, making it the most valuable export crop, with a year on year growth of 53 per cent, and fresh vegetable exports also grew 18 per cent over the last financial year and are now valued at $321 million. Hort Innovation head of trade, Dianne Phan, said these figures demonstrated not only the investment made by the industry, the government and Australian growers, but also the determination of home grown producers to globalise their high-quality produce. “We have worked incredibly hard together with industry, the Australian Government, our growers and our international trade partners to build demand

for our premium produce in an increasingly competitive international market, she said. “As a result of in-market initiatives under the Taste Australia brand, consumer research projects, trade events and in-store retail campaigns, Australian horticultural produce has never been more popular - particularly in Asian markets, Europe, and the Middle-East where consumers enjoy highquality products. “Our work with industry partners, coupled with the Australian reputation for delivering high-quality produce that complies with rigorous standards along every stage of the supply chain has been a key driving force in this achievement.

“But look how happy they are now. “They’re constantly grazing in this paddock. “There is no frenzy of eating, no stress, no boredom.” And the vision is a tribute to his perseverance, as thousands of chickens calmly co-exist, contentedly clucking and going about their business. Diego is very conscious of the chickens’ well-being, and that is why the maremmas are separated from the chickens, to minimise the birds’ stress levels. Diego also does not routinely cull birds once they pass their peak laying period, preferring to put the birds into retirement. “I may not get many eggs from the older chickens, but what I value from them is they dig over the garden for me, they look after

the ground and they fertilise it,” Diego said. “All my animals work. “Everybody has a job to do.” For there are not only chickens at Old Farm Happy Valley, there are goats and Shropshire sheep, Angus cattle and alpacas. Three piebald alpacas provide protection for a second paddock of chickens. Isa Browns are the predominant chicken in this paddock, and they are chosen for their laying capabilities as well as their brown eggs. This is another of Diego’s initiatives. He also has white Leghorns. They produce white eggs and this allows Diego to differentiate and brand his product on the market. The white eggs are badged under Wild Hen Happy Valley and are organic and gluten free. The chickens’ diet is care-

fully monitored so that they are not exposed to wheat, soy or corn. Diego believes that people may not be able to eat eggs or have allergies that are based on what the chicken has been fed, and this is an issue he is trying to address and change. It has resulted in Diego developing somewhat of a cult following for his product, with people travelling in order to ensure they can buy his eggs. “Sick kids eats my eggs,” Diego said. “No reaction, no allergic response. “Do you know how good that makes me feel? “It’s incredible.” Diego readily admits he is inordinately proud of his achievements with Old Farm Happy Valley. It became his sanity and reason to live in a dark period of his life, but from the smokLQJ HPEHUV RI WKDW EXVKo UH new life was born.

INGENIOUS IRRIGATION: Diego carefully considers all aspects of his enterprise to ensure his chickens are happy, healthy and stress free.

WHITE EGGS: Leghorns produce white eggs which differentiate Old Farm Happy Valley eggs from the competitors. Another point of difference is the egg cartons which Diego has also designed to be made out of 90 per cent grass clippings.

Gaol time for animal activists who invade farms MILITANT animal activists who use social media and websites to encourage others to invade and trespass on farms now will face up to five years in prison. Minister for Regional Services and Assistant Trade and Investment, Minister Mark Coulton, said the new law would protect farmers from intimidation and attacks by out-of-line activists. “Farmers, their families and their employees have a right to feel safe in their homes and workplaces and not be subjected to harassment and theft for producing food that feeds people here and across the globe, Minister Coulton said. “This new law sends a clear

message to animal activists that if you use the personal information of family farmers to incite trespass then you are risking imprisonment. “Not only are they harassing farmers, they’re posing serious biosecurity risks by potentially bringing contaminants and diseases onto farms that could threaten market access and wipe out an entire operation. Minister Coulton said the Liberal and Nationals Government was committed to delivering laws that made it easier for farmers to keep farming. “Many people would be aware of a case in Gippsland where goat farmers chose to shut their doors, rather than face the dangerous

invasions by these unlawful animal activists, he said. “When farmers choose to make a difficult decision like this, it means job losses for parents who are working to put food on the table, pay off their homes and give their children an education. “This government won’t stand idle and watch this happen. The legislation has now passed Parliament, meaning anyone who uses a carrier service to encourage trespass, theft or property damage faces a maximum penalty of 12 months in prison. Inciting harassment or intimidation carries a maximum penalty of five years.

LEAVE ME ALONE: Animal activists who use social media and websites, such as recent cases in Gippsland and on the Aussie Farms website, could now find themselves in jail.

PLENTY OF ATTENTION: Corinne Blacket is hands-on in their Drysdale Cheese enterprise.

goats are very similar to humans, being a similar size, and so when I need to treat the animals I have a good understanding of dosages and measurements, Corinne said. “I also apply all my microbiology in the cheese making room. “I have a lot of fun. “The chefs I supply know that I don’t keep stock. “I make to order, so if they want me to invent something, I can. Drysdale Cheese produces 50 to 60 kilograms of produce per week.

Corinne takes the order, she milks it, makes it, and delivers it. “If I have a chef who says C, ZDQW WKHVH p DYRXUV WKHQ , work with him, Corinne said. “Recently I had hives on the property and I used that honey in the cheese, and sprinkled WKDW ZLWK GHK\GUDWHG o J OHDYHV “Figs grow everywhere on the peninsula, so I dehydrate the leaves and grind them down. “I make ash from saltbush which is also abundant. “We grow our own garlic. “One chef wanted to

experiment with pine needles, so I made a pine needle yoghurt with pine needles collected from the garden. “I love this aspect of the job, this working in small batches WR VSHFLo F EULHIV y It is a creative process, and one that the Blackets have thoroughly enjoyed since their o UVW WHQWDWLYH IRUD\ LQWR WKH market. “It was six goats initially, and I went around from restaurant to restaurant, chef to chef, with P\ o UVW EDWFK DVNLQJ IRU LGHDV and feedback, Corinne said. k$QG WKHQ , VROG P\ o UVW cheese – it’s a big step – and I was happy, punched the air, and then I went and made some more. Fresh curd and lactic curd, manipulated in a variety of ways, fetta, haloumi, blue mould, white mould, semi hard and a hard, and of course yoghurt, Drysdale Cheese make it all. The enterprise is 14 years young with the Blackets happy at where their business is at, with no plans for expansion, but with goals to streamline production and improve HIo FLHQF\ The satisfaction is in a premium quality product on a manageable farm with animals that are content and respected. “One day you wake up and look a goat in the eye, and you go ‘Oh yeah, this is what I’m doing’, Corinne said.

Agpower is winning again Ű

Dealer of the Year three years running

AGPOWER & Transport Pty Ltd has taken out the Best Farm Machinery Dealer of the Year award for the third year in a row. Held at the Grand Hyatt Melbourne, the 2019 VACC industry awards bestowed the large business category award on the company. The prestigious award is awarded based on how a company operates, and what standards are achieved. The criteria for the award covers everything from OH&S, community support and environmental issues to which systems are in place for running a professional business. A family owned and operated business since 1999, and currently employing 32 staff, Agpower was extremely proud to receive

the award among some very tough competition. But the results themselves are not that surprising. Agpower is not just a farm machinery dealer; they cater for every type of service or mechanical repair - from a chainsaw to a B-double truck, no repair is too small or large. They’re an authorised dealer for many brands including New Holland, Kioti, Toro, Valtra and Polaris, and the factory-trained technicians carry out all types of repairs to all types of machinery. With a state-of-the-art mechanical workshop, the truck side of the business is well known for its top-quality service and repair standards, along with the ability to carry out full roadworthy inspections.

Add this to being able to service or repair your mower, sprayer or quad bikes, Agpower is your one stop shop for all your mechanical needs. The spare parts department stocks a large range of factory parts, and the spray shop caters for all your spraying needs. Agpower also has its own transport service for machinery breakdowns, deliveries and container transport. Agpower is not just about selling farm machinery, but supporting their customers in all aspects of their needs. With extended trading hours from 6.30am to 6pm Mon-Fri, and 8am to 12pm Saturday, Agpower is all about quality customer service at a competitive price.

WINNERS AGAIN: The AgPower team are rightly proud of their accomplishments. Pictured, from left, are Darren Tait, Brendan O’Donnell, Sharon Keeling, Paul Lollback and Gordon Watkins.

The phrase “built tough, built to last” certainly applies, as some of the very original machines are still going strong. In addition, Chipstar imports top quality European chippers and mulchers, all of which have proven time and again that they can handle the variety of Australian materials. The product range covers sizes

from 50mm/2” all the way to 400mm/15¾” both for domestic and commercial use, powered by their own engines, electric or tractor powered (PTO). The Vortex drum chipper, with its 6” x 16” neck, has also proven itself a winner. The larger 12” Vortex has now been fully designed, and is moving to the next stage. It includes a combination of a bottom feed conveyor and a 33” wide neck - very exciting. A trailer mounted 4” machine

with feed roller and auto-feed was launched this year, and is very handy for small scale commercial work. Lastly, a new Danish product has been received. A 4” drum chipper with a mover unit, which means it can drive up ramps. For more information, contact the Chipstar team on 9761 4486 or you can go to the website at www.chipstar.com.au or visit them at the Wandin Silvan Field Days.

Nothing beats the Superaxe

RURAL manufacturing company Whitlands Engineering is celebrating its 26th year of business throughout 2019 – marking also a decade of continuous growth despite the challenges facing regional business. Located in a rural farming area in North East Victoria, the company designs and manufactures Australia’s leading brands of log splitters and o UHZRRG SURFHVVRUV q WKH 6XSHUD[H and Rex. Beginning with the famed Superaxe in 1993, David Burder - now head designer and chief executive RIo FHU KDG WKH GHVLJQ UHDG\ WR go, but no experience running a business. His perseverance, and belief in his product, has paid dividends since then. David is wholly committed to employing local people and manufacturing in North East Victoria. Despite the temptation for cheaper production overseas, this decision has now become the cornerstone of the company philosophy and is fundamental to its success, longevity and reputation. “Local manufacturing keeps money in the local economy, supports 25 employees and their families and most importantly keeps integrity in the manufacturing process, Mr Burder said. “The imported machines may be cheaper but they certainly don’t last very long. “To say we are Australian made means more than anything. The other ingredient in their success is through innovative design and benchmark manufacturing standards. A product from Whitlands engineering is truly made to last. Beyond that, ergonomic design is key, making the backbreaking task of splitting wood simple and comfortable – the operator always has a straight back and lifting is eliminated with hydraulic log lifters o WWHG DV VWDQGDUG The Superaxe has certainly proven itself, having the reputation of being Australia’s leading log splitter for 25 years - setting new standards in performance, design and safety innovation. Weedwakka deals with your weeds quickly and efficiently WHETHER you are farming, contracting or clearing the back yard, you need Australia’s safest cutting attachment – the Weedwakka. A specialised cutting attachment for your brushcutter that is designed to eliminate the frustration of using nylon cord and conventional blades, the Weedwakka is an innovative approach to an age old problem. David Thorne developed Weedwakka for heavy vegetation, such as blackberries, saying the attached steel blades could cut anything from grass to woody weeds without ever needing sharpening. “If the blades strike a rock, they are able to dep HFW JUHDWO\ UHGXFLQJ WKH kick back, and minimising the stress on the brushcutter, he said. “This makes the Weedwakka Heavy Duty ideal for clearing scrub

The Weedwakka MulWLFXW KDV p H[LEOH Q\ORQ blades that cut cleanly through much heavier vegetation than nylon cord will handle. The blades are clearly visible when rotating, and can be used around trees without damaging the bark. The MultiCut is ideal for cutting along paths, walls and netting fences, as it eliminates the constant breakage and rapid wear common to nylon cord. When the blades are worn, they can be replaced in seconds without the use of tools. Both Weedwakka models are designed for straight shaft brush-cutters, and are easily attached in exactly the same way as a conventional steel blade.

SILVAN Glenmac when only best will do GLENMAC Sales and Service was founded by Mike Toth, an ex Chamberlain John Deere service manager, more than 40 years ago. ,Q WKDW o UVW \HDU *OHQPDF sold one tractor and repaired many Chamberlain and John Deere industrial backhoes. In 1978, Glenmac grew out of its premises in East Burwood, so the business rented a small factory in Ferntree Gully. Sales built slowly - though repair work on backhoes kept the business busy through the Christmas break. In those early years, the tractors Glenmac sold were all built in Mannheim, Germany. As quaint as it was practical, customers received their tractors not only pre delivered (PD) but run in and ready to be put to task. bays and a showroom. By this stage the business was selling not only Ag tractors, but also the expanding range of John Deere mowers and turf-care equipment.

In 2001, the team, by now well and truly established as one of the best in the business, opened the Pakenham branch on two acres of land with a purpose built workshop and showroom.

Dependable Reliable Power ... John Deere & Glenmac!

In 2012 the Glenmac team purchased Hunter & McPherson at Lilydale, and so set up their third Glenmac branch, continuing to support the Yarra Valley. Glenmac has now grown from a staff of four in 1976, to over 40 in 2019 – but despite the expansion, the philosophy remains the same as it was in the beginning; offer the best customer support possible. This customer support philosophy has worked well for Glenmac as a business; and equally as well for the customers. For over 40 years Glenmac has strived to improve their customer service in sales, service and parts. The Glenmac team invites you to experience their knowledge and experience, whatever your needs, by visiting them at any one of their three branches to experience the vast John Deere range. Whether you need a ride on mower, commercial or specialist golf course equipment, utility vehicles like the legendary Gator, a tractor from 25 to 670 or small and large scale farming implement, Glenmac has you covered.

GREAT PRODUCT, GREAT SERVICE, GREAT TEAM: Solartronics is a leading supplier of solar and mains powered remote gate openers. Pictured are Des Ladbrook and Allan Burhop at last year’s Wandin Silvan event.

Open your gates with solar power WHEN it comes to opening and closing your gates, no one knows more than Solartronics. Anyone who likes to leave their properties shut knows the frustration of opening and closing gates – but this is no longer a problem when you install a solar powered gate from Solartronics. After passing through a Solartronic gate, it automatically closes behind you and locks, using a shaft and a locking bracket that cannot be pushed open – making for maximum property security. The drive unit is a heavy duty, 24 volt swing arm, metal geared mechanism that provides long life, reli-

ability and a fast gate opening/closing time; typically 12 to 13 seconds. The gate opener is available as solar powered, and requires no electrical power, low voltage that is cabled from a nearby power outlet (no electrician required), or 240 volt - which does require power to be cabled to the gate. All systems have two 12 volt batteries to use as a backup when there is no sunlight or a loss of electrical power. Additional options can be included, such as visitor options, photo electric sensors to stop the gate closing on slower vehicles - large trucks or farm machinery

- in ground vehicle loops to open the gate when a vehicle drives over the loop and even remote controlled gate lock option so that all visitor entry buttons can be disabled from your vehicle as you leave the property or retire at night. Other options also include remote controls to control your gate from up WR o YH NLORPHWUHV DZD\ RU alarms to warn the gate is opening. The gate controller kits come as an easy to install do it yourself kit, with Solartronics offering full after sales support. Call in and speak to Allan and Des during this year’s Wandin Silvan Field Days.

The extensive agricultural competitions take centre stage with strong entries across our cattle, sheep, horse, goats, alpacas, poultry, budgerigar and dog sections. Away from the animals, the home-craft competitions are always strongly contested with everything from scones and jam to Lego and photography. The lifestyle pavilion is home to all the home-craft demonstrators - you might even learn a trick or two. The vintage machinery display is always a crowd favourite with its impressive collection of steam and oil engines as well as tractors and implements. It has something for the whole family GOING to the Lancefield Show is like stepping back in time. Sheep dogs mingle with excited children, and jars of jam attract as much attention as the winning egg displays. The annual Lancefield Show, which is on Sunday, October 21, includes fun for the whole family. From the cattle competitions to craft displays, dog high jump to the tractor pull, there is something for every age group and every interest. Nothing says it’s time for the Lancefield Show like the big amusement rides rolling into town. From the fast paced octopus to the dodgem cars, the fun begins to build as soon as the rides roll through the sleepy streets of town. From working dog demonstrations

to the sheep competitions, there is action both big and small. Horses, washed, cleaned and groomed to perfection; chooks, plucked from their cages and given a spruce-up; dogs, clipped and trimmed. There are fancy dress awards, prizes for cakes, scones and jams – even categories for the best decorated fairy garden. Floriculture is also a hot bed of competition. Outside, old grey Fergie tractors compete for spectator interest against working vintage engines. Side show alley includes rides – but there are also show bags, stalls and the unavoidable fairy floss. Information about the Lancefield Show is on the website, www.lancefieldshow.org.au.

Something for everyone at the 2019 Ballarat Spring Show THE Ballarat Agricultural and Pastoral Society (BAPS) is hosting its 153rd Spring Show on November 8, 9 and 10 this year. It’s going to be a big celebration, and one not to be missed, with something for everyone and a focus on all things country. BAPS president, Geoff Fisken, said there was so much on offer that patrons might just have to come along for the three days. “We are well into the planning for the 2019 Spring Show where the celebration will be focused on agriculture and community, he said. “We want people to come to the show and enjoy the rides and see the animals and maybe enjoy a show bag or three but that’s not all - we want to showcase all that is amazing about agriculture and bridge the gap between farm and city. “Education, information and fun is the key. There is more than 300 displays and attractions from the historical to the modern, including a very popular and free Woolworths Family Pavilion with activities and entertainment just for kids. Another much enjoyed area is

the craft and cooking, with locals competing for the title of best slice and cake, winning a prize for art and photography or entering knitting, crochet and sewing. “We have many classes for all ages to enter and it’s exciting to see your work on display, hopefully with a blue ribbon attached, Mr Fisken said. “We even have classes just for blokes to enter so get your cooking aprons on. Animals are always very popular and this year is no different with a huge array on display. Cats, dogs, goats, rabbits, donkeys, horses, cattle, sheep, chooks, ducks, geese and even reptiles and native animals will be on display either competing for a prize or to meet and greet the public. k7KH VKRZ LV D WHUULo F SODFH WR learn about animals and get up close to understand how important animals are in our lives; many people don’t have the opportunity to see them so we aim to change that, Mr Fisken said. Lots to see and do at Whittlesea Show THE annual Whittlesea Show is a date to be marked in the calendar. The weekend of November 2 and 3 will be the 160th show, facilitated by volunteers from the Whittlesea Agricultural Society. Don’t miss your opportunity to experience this year’s theme, Generation to Generation, and see how cleverly it is depicted in most of the pavilions. Horses will be a huge part of the show with competitions beginning on Friday and running throughout the weekend. There is something for everyone at the annual show including

an animal nursery - which has many baby animals for the kids to cuddle, a huge display of entries from local schools, photography and home crafts, as well as horticulture, woodchop and more. Another feature this year is the Iron Revolution Strong Man and Woman Competition, where contestants will perform great feats of strength to win the title. The grounds will have excellent trade exhibits from cars to food to many products which are both new and exciting. And of course, the obligatory show bags. The grand parade is held

daily at 3pm in the main arena of the show - it showcases the best of the show. Parading around the ring you will see the biggest bulls, the most majestic horses, the chugging vintage machinery and you’ll be able to cheer on the winners of the ambassadors and young persons’ competitions. So come and enjoy the weekend and even become a show member. Appreciate all the hard work of the show committee and exhibitors that ensures the Whittlesea Show is an event not to be missed.

OUR emphasis continues to be on selecting sheep that perform in paddock conditions, and then taking these sheep to shows, to showcase to current clients and future clients the sheep that we are producing. It is validating for us that more than one judge has recognised the potential of our sheep. The Corriedale was developed as a maternal breed, and at Gambier View our sheep are being bred for this purpose. Gambier View sheep are known to be very meaty with excellent structure, have hardy black feet and cut around seven kilograms of 27 micron wool, with a value of approximately $50 annually – dependent on yearly conditions. Last year we cut 7.2 kilo-

grams at an average micron of 27.5, netting $49 a head. The structure of the Gambier View sheep is the reason that we can produce lambs from our ewes until they are seven or eight years of age. They will continue to produce a heavy cutting, excellent style wool. Longevity and self-replacing are extremely important in this day and age when considering the price of replacement ewes. The Gambier View sheep are big in size with the potential to mature quickly. Ram lambs have been used to conceive lambs, when they are only seven months of age. The ewe hoggets are due to start lambing at the age of 13 months, with the upper end of the weight range at 80kg but again this all depends on the availability of feed. Lambing percentages are an additional strength in buying a Gambier View sheep.

HAY AND SILAGE Machine market slows in August Tractor sales slide as farmer confidence erodes Ű

AUGUST sales for agricultural tractors have suffered another steep decline, down 19 per cent for the month and now 12 per cent behind last year. Falls were felt in all size categories in all states including the very buoyant Western Australian market, which was down 27 per cent on the same month

By GARY NORTHOVER, executive director of the Tractor and Machinery Association of Australia

last year now sitting six per cent behind last year. Across the nation, it continues to be NSW suffering the greatest

declines with a further 27 per cent drop in August now 22 per cent behind last year. Queensland, which had been showing signs of recovery, slipped 14 per cent in the month and is now seven per cent behind for the year. Victoria had a solid month, exactly in line with August last year, but remains eight per cent behind for the full year. South Australian sales have gone from bad to worse, with a massive 48 per cent drop in August, now a full 25 per cent behind last year. The market across Australia is being hampered by a distinct lack of confidence arising

out of the drought being experienced in the eastern states, combined with a somewhat circumspect attitude being felt in the leisure sector which continues to contain low horsepower tractor sales. The growth of this lower end of the market has been a standout for the industry over the past decade, but it is showing signs similar to those in the wider economy, much of which has been written elsewhere. Sales in the 200hp (150kw) and above range were down substantially, 36 per cent behind for the month. The 100 to 200hp (75150kw) segment also suffered a big drop, down

10 per cent for the month. The 40 to 100hp (3075kw) range was also down 25 per cent, and it was a similar story in the lower under 40hp (30kw) range, down 13 per cent in August. Combine harvester sales are tracking sideways with levels at around half of last year’s sales and this trend is expected to continue through harvest season. That said, it will be no surprise to anyone to learn that dealers’ stock levels are strong across the board so the opportunity to upgrade will be compelling. Baler sales continue to be the one high point in the market as the demand

for hay is still strong. August sales were up 46 per cent on last year, and are now 22 per cent ahead on a year to date basis. Finally, sales of out front mowers bounced another 10 per cent in the month in preparation for the grass growing season, now sitting in line with last year on a yearly basis. The results from the TMA’s quarterly business survey of dealers are now in and highlight a continuation of the pessimistic outlook. Dealers are generally reporting low levels of confidence in the outlook along with a generally poor order bank, all of which will be driven by the rainfall outlook.

DOWNLOAD SOME HELP: Due to the extreme weather conditions, drought, wind, fire and frosts across the country, Feed Central, a commercial hay marketplace, is currently fielding many enquiries about making hay and straw from cereal crops. Naturally the extreme weather is also causing ongoing demand for large volumes of hay. To help growers make these important decisions the team have come up with a comprehensive pack which includes: how the hay market works, gross margins, market conditions, cutting, baling, storage and marketing. The pack is designed to be used alongside your own independent research and advice, including from your local agronomist. Head to the Feed Central website to download the pack for free.

Seeds, Fertilisers and Pasture Policy makers get dirty POLICY makers from the Federal Government swapped their suits for boots on a recent GrainGrowers tour of the Riverina in NSW. The ‘paddock to plate experience’ across the grains value chain was an opportunity to show how policy affects what happens on farm and beyond. During a visit to a Temora grain farm, policy makers were able to see first-hand how drought, mobile connectivity and regulation impacts on growers and their businesses. The group also toured grain storage and logistics sites, research facilities and processing plants in the region. “This was the fourth year of our Grains Innovation Tour said Luke Mathews, GrainGrowers general manager, policy and research. “It’s always exciting to bring together people who are passionate about the growth of Australian agriculture as we work to the 2030 goal of a $100 billion industry. The journey through the value chain enabled participants to see how oilseeds and grains are grown, transported and then used in oil and beer production. It also highlighted the importance of research for the grains industry with a showcase of disease resistant trials for a variety of grains and pulse crops. “We think seeing first-hand the innovation and experience on the ground in our industry helps focus efforts within government to improve outcomes for grain farmers and other parts of the supply chain, Mr Mathews said.

Tim Slater, product manager hay and harvest, said the key to the DC103 was its simplicity when it comes to operation, adjustments and maintenance, with the reliability and ruggedness required to get the job done within often demanding timeframes. “Due to the ongoing drought across many regions, the demand for hay-making equipment has been high, so the launch of this new DC103 has come at a good time for customers looking to upgrade machinery, or for those new to this market, Tim said. “It retains everything customers appreciated about its predecessor, the well-established DC102, but then introduces a raft of enhanced features that

are now standard, such as revised cutter-bar flotation and additional tilt adjustment and quick-change knives. “It’s a practical and userfriendly design that produces outstanding results in all conditions. The DC103’s simplicity can be attributed to clean lines with minimal moving parts, and for most in-field adjustments tools are not required. Even changing cutting blades is now just a matter of using the tool mounted on the mower-conditioner, featuring a quick-change design with a retaining clip and eccentric nut. Tim said cutterbar flotation is the biggest change on the model, redesigned for simplicity yet providing the best protection in the event of encountering an obstacle. The range of motion as the cutterbar floats up protects the knives from the obstacle. In addition, each disc also has its own independent protection with a shock hub (frangible splines) that protects the main cutterbar drivetrain if it’s not possible to float over an obstruction.
