Our Say WHO would have thought this time last season that we would now have a new international owner of two of Victoria’s biggest lift companies, Falls Creek and Hotham, plus this would allow season pass holders to access three Australian resorts on one pass when you add to the equation NSW’s Perisher resort. The purchase by Vail Resorts for $179 million has really changed the landscape and now offers their season pass holders multiple destination options, both here and internationally.

Mt Buller opened their new $6 million Bourke Street Express a week prior to the opening weekend after a fantastic early start. The resort has a lot of big development continuing into next summer plus a host of key anniversaries this season. It is Mt Buller’s 70th year of lifted access, Koflers restaurant celebrates its 60th anniversary and congratulations to Ski Club of Victoria for their 90th anniversary. Mother Nature has been playing the ‘Indian Giver’ game in the first part of the season, generously giving snow and then rescinding

on that idea, but snowmaking has once again shown it is the best investment any resort has ever made and millions well spent. As we go to print there is another nice storm developing for mid-July which should set up nicely for peak season. August is still one of the busiest times in the resorts, but don’t discount September even if the weather does warm in the cities. No matter what month you visit you are sure to have a great time, and really, is there a better holiday anywhere than in the snow. Steve Cuff – Editor.

Undisputed King of Halfpipe By Adam Begg SCOTTY James has accomplished the ultimate dream season where he remarkably went undefeated in competition - setting him up as the most dominant snowboarder to drop into a halfpipe since Shaun White.

GOLD: Scotty James is ecstatic winning the 2019 XGames in Aspen. PHOTO: © Christian Pondella/Red Bull Content Pool.

His array of technical tricks, including a switch backside 1080, has his competitors scrambling to keep up with his rapid progression since he won a bronze medal at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. Starting the northern hemisphere season with his first win at the Grand Prix at Copper Mountain Colorado in December, James went on to make it 6 wins from 6 starts, a feat no other snowboarder has ever achieved. The Dew Tour second event featured a unique modified halfpipe with a mix of jumps and different transition types where he proved he can adapt to differing terrain. This contest was the first of its kind with James securing top position. He proved that his transition skills could translate to jumps as well, and his win in this event made it clear to his competitors that he would be the one to beat this season. Heading to Europe for the Swiss Laax Open, James had the competition wrapped up early with a very convincing victory. Such was his dominance he didn’t even have to complete his last run, instead opting for a victory lap for the people. Most riders do a style run for a victory

lap, but not James. He rode down the wall of the halfpipe giving hi 5’s to all the kids and fans. It was the first victory lap of its kind and truly reflective of his generous personality, stoking out the kids and thanking his fans for braving the cold to watch him ride. James is always willing to give back and he stayed out in the cold and dark until late signing autographs whilst most other riders headed back to the village for warmth and dinner. His fourth win was the highly prestigious XGames in Aspen. After breaking his snowboard in training, he managed to peel off his sponsor stickers at the top of the course and replace them onto his back up board, re-set mentally and drop in for the win. It was his second XGames victory in three years and once again had the competition won before the last lap and proceeded with another victory lap of hi 5’s down the wall of the pipe. In February James won his third consecutive World Title at the FIS World Championships in Park City, Utah. No other snowboarder has ever captured three world titles until Scotty James completed the hat trick earlier this year. He completed what was possibly the best run ever in a halfpipe, a run that would have clenched gold at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympics. Victory number five was now in the bag for the season. “I was pinching myself when I won my second world title, and I’m triple pinching myself now that I’ve won my third one, it’s absolutely amazing,” the 24-year-old said. James’ last competition of the season was the US Open where he was the undisputable firm favourite and clearly had a target on his back. Again, he performed under pressure with big clean technical tricks and outscored the best riders in the world to complete an undefeated competition season. The US open is one of the longest running and most prestigious events in snowboarding and James has wanted to win it since he watched it with his mum ten years ago. “I went with my mom, when it was in Vermont, and I remember just saying to her that I’d love to be a part of the halfpipe finals one day,” he said. “Now, to be crowned US Open champion, I’m absolutely speechless.” Scotty James is undeniably the best halfpipe rider in the world now and has the rest of the snowboard world chasing him heading towards the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

Early Season Turns THE 2019 season started in fine style with Mt Buller opening early on June 1 and all resorts reporting huge visitation for their official Queen’s birthday opening long weekend. Mother Nature was very generous in late May and early June resulting in the best start since the legendary 2000 season. She then rescinded that early offering of big snowfalls, instead adding a few smaller top ups but keeping the nights cold allowing snowmakers to keep the snow guns firing for man made snow. Mt Buller added to the excitement with the opening of their new $6 million Bourke Street Express, the six seater being a popular addition to the Buller lift system. June resulted in some great early winter skiing and snowboarding for those who ventured to the mountains with plenty of willing participants making early season turns. Here is a selection of photos from June should you have happened to miss the frivolities.

HOW SNOW CHAINS GRIP

In order for wheel chains to work effectively, and to provide the maximum amount of traction and braking, chains must penetrate into a compacted snow on the road surface. Wheel lock up can occur when the snow chains are used on a ‘black road’. This occurs when the icy surface begins to break up or melts and the vehicle can slide on the wheel chains under hard braking. Please refer to the snow chain section of your vehicle owner’s manual for further explanation. Wheel chains fitted to summer tyres on the front wheels will increase traction for take off, for driving and for braking but cannot assist with vehicle’s lateral stability. Because of the inadequate grip of summer tyres on the rear the vehicle it will oversteer and when braking the ABS system can be activated, further increasing the stopping distance. The problems are always worse when driving downhill than uphill. Wheel chains fitted to summer tyres on the rear wheels will increase traction for take off and driving but cannot assist with steering, braking or lateral stability. Because of inadequate grip of summer tyres on the front of the vehicle it will not ‘turn in’ and will understeer. When braking the ABS system can be activated, further increasing the stopping distance. Again, the problems are always worse when driving downhill than uphill.

WINTER DRIVING

Please read the winter driving section of your vehicle owner’s manual for further explanation. There are issues even when diamond pattern snow chain system is used on high performance 2WD or AWD “summer” tyres. On summer tyres snow chains will grip to the compacted snow/ice but the tyre can slip or spin within the chain even when chains are correctly fitted to the tyre. The problem is compounded by the camber of the road, the weight and torque of the vehicle and the amount of tread on the tyre. The problem is worse when the vehicle has been parked at the resort because of the low ambient temperature makes the tyres harder and therefore has even less grip to the chain.

CHECKING THE GRIP OF YOUR TYRES ON SNOW

When it is safe to do so, at a safe speed, and, make sure that no one is close behind you, apply the brakes firmly until the wheels lock up and the ABS is activated. Keep the brake pedal pressed down until the vehicle stops completely. This will give you a clear indication of the grip available at that particular point in time. You can repeat this test to continually monitor grip in different conditions.

TRANSPORT AVAILABLE FROM MT BULLER

New Lift Unveiled for 70th Anniversary THIS year Mt Buller celebrate their 70th anniversary of lifted access, and what better way to start their 2019 season than with an early opening on June 1 which included unveiling their new $6 million Bourke Street Express. Buller Ski Lifts owners Rino and Diana Grollo were joined by their extended family to cut the ribbon to applause from the hundreds of skiers, snowboarders and sightseers who lined up to be the first to ride the new $6m chairlift.

Over 2000 enthusiastic locals and visitors flocked to the resort to be amongst the first to ride the lift and make some turns on Bourke Street ski run. Buller Ski Lifts General Manager Laurie Blampied said, “This chairlift project is a big investment and represents months of hard work by many people – today we celebrate the start of winter by riding the lift and sliding together on fresh snow, which is just how we like it.” In 1949 Mt Buller started with a single rope tow on the Bourke Street run. In the 70 years since the first skiers were transported uphill, the resort has seen many fluctuations and changes in lifts, but now offer a truly sophisticated and modern lift network with 22 lifts servicing their 300 hectares of terrain. Looking back through the decades there was the ongoing feud between the Orange Lift and the Blue Lift companies which has been credited with fast tracking Buller’s development as they both strived for supremacy. At the Kaptans Restaurant in Pension Grimus you will see plaques lining the

restaurant walls depicting the history of lifts installed at Mt Buller. It is a credit to the late Hans Grimus for envisioning long ago that this part of Buller’s history is important. The latest addition, the Bourke Street Express has already become a popular lift in the first month of the season. Enjoy the ride.

Koers 60th Year NAMED after Austrian Helmet Koer, one of the early Mt Buller pioneers, Koers restaurant celebrates its 60th anniversary this winter. Always one of the most popular eateries, Koers has been operated by Bob and Christine Fleming since 1971, with son Toby residing at Koers the past seven seasons. Since being built Bob said it has had minimal changes. “When they built the building, no one knew why there were building it up there, the government built it to spend some money on the ski industry but there were no lifts up there.â€? “When I came we served basic sort of food, it was what I could carry up in a pack at night from the Abom. There were no skidoos then. The shape of the roof is not good for leaking and things like that, but it adds to the atmosphere and people like Koers,â€? said Bob. The Fleming family grew up on the mountain and 13 staff stay at Koers with Bob saying, “that place is beautiful to wake up at, if it wasn’t so beautiful, I wouldn’t have stayed.â€? “Toby and brother Ben, both of them

I didn’t ski a lot, I had to be there working and I thought if I had an accident, there goes.â€? “I do feel very fortunate it is a tremendous place, and the skiers are very friendly, you saw people at their best when they are skiing.â€? And the people that it attracts, the staff and the customers, it is like nothing else.

THE new Kooroora nightclub and pub will be in full swing for peak season with the 21 residences and 24 room hotel to be built this coming summer. Licensed for 870 people over the two oors, the downstairs nightclub ďŹ res up from 9pm and the quieter upstairs pub ideal for people to sit and have a meal. Kooroora owner Joe Masiano said, “the old Kooroora as fun as it was as a drinking hole for over 70 years, it was a pretty unattractive building in the square. The village square is a lot bigger now and the old Kooroora had run out of its lease time. It had to be done, it was nearly condemned.â€?

New Smokehouse for Spurs SNOW enthusiasts love a great feed, especially on cold days or after burning up calories on the slopes. So how excited will they be when they approach the top of the Northside Express Chair at Mt Buller this winter and smell the new BBQ aromas emanating from Spurs restaurant? The new Iron Maiden Smokehouse BBQ burning constantly may just be too hard to resist. Smokehouse pit boss Scott Gould is new on board for this season and said they wanted to bring a new take to Spurs and really make it a destination so people who come to the mountains can have a full experience. “We’ve turned Spurs into an American style BBQ joint. All your very-much typical American fare - the slow smoked brisket,

chopped pork, house made sausage made from the trim left from the brisket and the pork, brine chicken and smoked served with a pickle and Alabama white sauce,â€? said Scott. “We wanted to make it a bit more of an experience and a destination on the mountain so rather than people just treating it as something to eat, they can come and have this really amazing experience as well.â€? The smoker was built by Andy Collins from SC Smokers who reconditioned an old steamer boiler into a giant offset smoker. The smoker ďŹ re box is stocked with wood with the meat placed in the cooking chamber. “The heated smoke ows across all the protein or vegetables and - happy days we are pretty excited to use it.â€? The smoker is no lightweight and weighs in at 4.7 tonnes. They have a structure around the smoker that is custom built to suit the American style BBQ, with corrugated iron and exposed wood beams. Guests may also want to pull up a seat on the deck close by the smoker on those cold days. The ďŹ re box will be running at 800 degrees so depending on where you are standing, “you can deďŹ nitely get toasty, that’s for sure.â€? During the early season Scott said they had

to ďŹ ne tune their use of the smoker. “One of the biggest challenges was keeping the snow off it, the ďŹ rst few days the whole thing was covered in snow which was not ideal when you are trying to light a ďŹ re. “We run it 24/7 now, it’s constantly ticking over, so at night time we ďŹ ll up the ďŹ rebox with big logs, shut it all down and that’s enough to keep ticking overnight just to stop the snow settling on it. Then we come back in the morning and ramp it back up.â€? The Iron Maiden Smokehouse at Spurs is open for lunch when the Northside Chair is running during the winter season.

Grooving on Hotham Groomers Hotham may be renowned for its powder skiing, but don’t discount the variety of groomed runs it offers intermediate and advanced skiers and boarders. Local legend Buff Farnell takes us on a guided groomed tour. By Buff Farnell WELCOME fellow Hotham gliders and anyone who’s considering a visit to Mount Hotham. Everyone knows I do love riding the backcountry and the Hotham off piste, but we have so many amazing blue groomed trails I thought I would introduce you to a few. The beauty of Hotham is it has great variety that allows you to cruise across the resort and at the same time take in all the stunning views. Let’s start at the top of the Summit Quad chair. Stop for a minute and just take in the 360-degree views to Feathertop and Bogong, plus you can see Mt Buller in the distance to the south west, it does not get any better. Now ski down towards the village but keep to the left as you pass the Road Runner chair unload and cross over the

Hull Bridge onto the Sun Run. As its name sounds, the sun beats down here all day and is a nice cruiser that softens early. At the bottom of Sun Run turn left at the intersection then turn right onto Sundowner trail that has great pitch to go fast or lean into some fun turns. As you near the end of Sundowner you can go hard left for the easy option onto Slalom Gully and the Heavenly Valley chair, or hard right over the edge down Pump House Drop. This soon gets steeper but is manageable, just watch your speed and it has a different aspect so snow can change quickly. Turn right onto Swindlers trail which brings you to the bottom of the Village Audi quattro lift. You have just enjoyed a nice long run and now admire the views over the Gullies and Wall of Death steeps as you ride back to Hotham Village. If you went to the Heavenly Valley chair you will have a great selection of blue or black runs that are mostly always groomed. Plus, you see the runs from the chair making choices easier. Further afield take an adventure from the top of Heavenly to The Orchard chair. This area is great for intermediates with plenty of cruiser runs ripe for the picking. At the top you can now look back and see how far you have skied from the village. Runs like Zirks, Bushwacker and Chirons are just a few and they offer different gradients of steepness. If you don’t want it too steep, just ski the outer runs like Watershed. To return to the village, take the Keogh’s

You have just completed a great exploration of some of Hotham’s great groomed runs. I hope you got your groove on with this blend of different groomers at Mt Hotham that I love. If you spot me on the lift say hi and we can run a lap together. See you in the mountains, cheers Buff.

WHEN snowstorms roll into Hotham the locals certainly get excited. They know the aspect of their resort combined with wind and the trees often catch more flakes than other resorts resulting in deeper powder days. Hotham Ambassador Drew Jolowicz is no stranger to such days having skied at Hotham for 30 years. He vividly remembers 2017 when the blizzard of oz dumped huge snow. “It was a sixty-centimetre day in bounds, that was one of the deepest days I can remember for a while. It was super deep, an incredible snowfall that one, it was one of the first trilogy of storms, the blizzard of oz number one,” said Drew. Like many hard core skiers and snowboarders at Hotham, Drew is one

who will plunder the in bounds powder while it lasts, either during the storms or once it clears. But once they have had their fill of resort powder, Hotham offers some of the best backcountry and fresh turns. “On the good days I like to ski the resort first and then head out of bounds in search of fresh powder in the backcountry.” It is this growing theme that now has resorts offering backcountry tours which Hotham have also added to their programs this year. Plus, they will also host the Victorian Backcountry Festival from September 7-8. Drew said that one of the beauties of Hotham is the terrain accessible from the resort. “It’s a booming part of the ski industry now, so you are definitely seeing more

numbers out there (backcountry) than ever before.” “For people interested in experiencing the backcountry the first port of call would be taking one of the lift company backcountry tours. They do an intro to backcountry tour that gets people familiar with the backcountry.” He said there were many great introductory runs such as Dargo Bowl or Eagle Ridge, both ideal locations and a good place to start. “You can access Eagle Ridge from the top of Heavenly Valley, traverse out, it’s quite a quick loop, just descend down and a ten or fifteen minute skin back up to the resort. It’s a decent vertical.” Like all experienced backcountry skiers, Drew knows there are risks and that people need to adhere to some rules. “You have to be aware when you are out there and definitely make sure you have all the correct equipment and know how to use it. Never travel alone.” Combined with the Hotham companies Backcountry Tours and the September Festival, those looking to learn or start their backcountry adventures have the perfect opportunities this year. As for the actual Backcountry Festival, Drew said, “Hotham is the perfect location for the event with the amount of backcountry terrain we have within easy

Alpine News Winter - 2019 - 11

access to the resort, it’s the perfect venue and I couldn’t think of anywhere better to stage it.” During the festival Drew will also be tail guiding with Dave and Pieta Herring from Alpine Access Australia, one of the experienced companies who offer courses in avalanche awareness and backcountry safety. “Depending on location we will take a group out and show them the ropes.” The festival has a full two day program including guest speakers and various tours. It is advisable to book well in advance. You can book Hotham backcountry tours through the ski school with information on the website. Companies Inuencing the Market BIG business has certainly changed the landscape of Hotham and Falls Creek in recent years. First it was Wyndham acquiring major properties in Dinner Plain, and now with the Vail Resorts purchase of both Hotham and Falls Creek lift companies, investors and holiday makers have snapped up properties in fast time, and along the way driving up prices purely through demand. Paul English from Alpine Property Real Estate said they have had record sales this past year and during his 15 years of selling alpine properties he has never seen such big investments in such a short time. “It all really started when the large US company, Wyndham, made bulk purchases of Dinner Plain properties. They purchased the former Rundells Resort

and rebranded to Ramada also owned by Wyndham,â€? said Paul. “The bulk Wyndham purchases were done in a very short time and it had a major impact on the holiday rental market and staff accommodation. There were practically no properties for sale.â€? “Private individual investors moved in rapidly and acquired most of the remaining properties following the Wyndham investments. We were literally selling properties as fast as we could list them.â€? Now the Vail Resorts acquisition has established further conďŹ dence in the market after their $179 million purchase. Having a distinguished company such as Vail Resorts step into the Victorian snow industry has again set the real estate market on ďŹ re. “Just as we were starting to see properties trickle back onto the market the rumours started before Christmas about Vail Resorts,â€? said Paul. “Since the Vail announcement we have sold another 12 properties in very short time at Mt Hotham and Dinner Plain. Normally we take a year to sell that amount of properties.â€? Paul suggested that this was a coup for current owners as their properties has

INCREASE: The property market has been hot in recent years. Pictured here, ski in ski out accommodation at Hotham and a Dinner Plain residence in snow. PHOTOS: Hotham and Alpine Property. increased dramatically in value since. “The prices have really skyrocketed from a year ago. The average median price for a chalet has increased from $430,000 approximately twelve months ago to now $520,000. In the coming years we are sure to quickly exceed the $600,000 median as we have already started making record high sale prices. While the real estate market climbs so will the holiday market continue to rise. North of the border in NSW, the town of Jindabyne has seen a massive boost in real estate sales and new housing developments. While not entirely contributed to the Vail Resort purchase of Perisher Resort, it certainly has helped.

Snow enthusiasts now are planning, not only for the next year but their future. Even those guests who usually only consider a northern hemisphere snow holiday are now looking at the local snow market and potentially holiday homes. They have their Epic Australia Pass for their overseas holiday, and now if the snow conditions suit, they can easily decide to visit as they have eliminated one cost, their ski pass. It will be interesting to see how this all develops in the coming years. There will be Perisher visitors keen to see their Victorian counterparts, and for Victorian skiers looking for options they may well travel over the border.

SSA Providing Clearer Pathways for Athlete Development ATHLETES coming through the Ski and Snowboard Australia (SSA) system now have a clearer pathway for the road to success. SSA recently adopted the Sport Australia’s (SA) FTEM (Foundation, Talent, Elite and Mastery) framework, and have aligned all their pathways to follow this evidence-based approach to athlete development. The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) originally developed the FTEM framework to directly support these key outcomes of sport participation being; Active Lifestyle, Sports Participation, and Sporting Excellence. The FTEM model is a fully integrated, evidence-based framework representing the Foundation, Talent, Elite and Mastery of the ‘whole of sport’ pathway journey. In short it allows everyone to see the key features required for each stage of an athlete’s journey and provides a practical method to assist sport and athlete stakeholders (clubs and coaches) to maximise and manage athlete development. The FTEM was discussed last year at several alpine snowsport community sessions to assist athletes and parents understand the road to success should our athletes strive for the elite level. It has been proven at elite international

level in other successful snowsport countries. The FTEM framework consists of 3 macro stages of the skill and performance development of sporting participants, which are further differentiated into 10 micro stages. These stages as shown in the chart include Foundations (F1, F2 and F3); Talent (T1, T2, T3 and T4); Elite (E1 and E2); and Mastery (M). Each stage of the SSA Athlete Pathway provides an overview of athlete preparation, programs, on and off-snow development, equipment, competition, leadership and support. It is designed to inform the community about the Pathways to High Performance, and to support all Program Providers to deliver long-term athlete development opportunities. www.skiandsnowboard.org.au.

Return of the Arts Mountain VISITORS to Falls Creek will have noticed a definite shift in the village aesthetics in recent years with public artworks becoming more and more prevalent across the resort. From recycled ski sculptures to buildingsized murals, it is all part of a dedicated strategy to bring the resort back to its roots as “the arts mountain”. A simple idea has blossomed into a full -scale program, generating funding and support of acclaimed artists for bigger and more expansive works. The most striking work was one of the first introduced. Take a stroll up Ory’s Trail or a detour off the Shortcut ski trail and you will soon find “Big Fella”, an incredible 12 metre tall mural painted on the village’s original water supply tank. Big Fella is the work of the first resort ‘’Artist in Residence”, Hiroyasu Tsuri. Hiro’s works are found further throughout the village with installations at Diana Lodge, Huski Kitchen and The Man Hotel. Recycling used skis has become a common theme and those visiting the Windy Corner Cross Country Ski Centre will find a bold tribute to the biggest tv show of recent times with the “Throne of Skis”. Created by Albury artist Michael Laubli, this popular place has been the setting for a multitude of snow selfies since its installation! Michael’s work is seen once more in Slalom Plaza with yet another eye catching sculpture created from recycled skis, this time in the form of a wren bathing in the plaza’s fountain. Some works are a tip of the hat to Falls Creek’s ski heritage and history. In the Gully visitors waiting for a shuttle bus can rest on a park bench constructed from

one of the original Eagle Chairlift chairs. Directly alongside, a precision-cut metal installation provides a view back in time to the original location of “Skyline”, the first ski lodge built at Falls Creek over 70 years ago. As Falls Creek’s arts installations become more prolific throughout the village, the biggest by far is yet to come. An expert curatorial panel, consisting of some of the nation’s most well-known and respected arts professionals, assessed over fifty submissions for a major public art gateway

development for Falls Creek. The successful submission from artist Giovani Veronessi, was a larger than life, impressive work titled “Flower of the Alpine Sun”. The immense golden feature has been designed as a monument to the opposed seasonal landscapes of Falls Creek and a shining beacon to visitors as they arrive at the resort. With plans in the works to bring this design to reality soon, visitors can see a scale model of the development on display at the Visitor Information Centre during winter.

When Forecasters Fail Falls Creek Resort Management CEO Stuart Smythe gives a jovial insight into folklore snow forecasting. WHEN forecasters fail, folklore prevails and age old remedies are applied to forecasting both the likelihood of snow and how much will fall this season. Everything from Punxsutawney Phil, the world’s most famous groundhog, or the thickness of onion skins, the height of weeds, the time of flowers blooming, the height at which insects are laying their eggs right through to the crabs in Port Phillip Bay leaving…are thrown on the table as predictive tools for winter and forecast snow season. Last year, we launched “crab watch” with the team at www.redboats.com. au providing regular below the surface

updates on the migration of the Port Phillip Bay crabs. These giant spider crabs clamour over one another in their thousands across the floor of the bay, moulting their shells, feasting on each other, then disappearing again. Barry Iddles, famed restaurateur (Elk@Falls - just one of many) and avid crab watcher swears by their ability to accurately forecast when snow will begin in earnest. The current prediction is that post the new full moon, which has just occurred as at the time of writing (June 17th), within the following three days, the crabs will be gone, and the snow will begin. Sceptical? So was I last year, but Barry,

RedBoats and the migratory habits of the crabs where spot on. As soon as the crabs ‘disappeared’… no literally, not even the scientists understand where they go post leaving the bay, the snow began. The date last year was June 13 and it puked down from that point on. So, if this method of forecasting snowfall is correct, then by the time you’re are reading this we should be seeing new snow falling. If not, then I reckon Barry needs to put the crabs on his menu, as a sacrifice to the snow gods and let’s see if that works. Paired with a crisp dry Riesling or Pinot Gris, I’ll get the crab crackers and seafood picks ready for a crab degustation.

Alaskan Sit Ski Heliskiing By Steve Cuff AN expedition consisting of massive logistics, planning and executing has resulted in quadriplegic sit skier Sarah-Jane ‘SJ’ Staszak experiencing a memorable Alaskan journey with her son Hamish. Along with her disability ski guide Paul Gardner, carer Scott Marr and part time Alaskan resident Jennie Milton, they combined for what is a heliskiing trip of a lifetime. “It was truly just fantastic,” said SarahJane who is referred to as SJ. “In fact, I was having a shitty day the other day and I used that little trick where you take yourself back to a happy place. I went straight back to the first helicopter ride we had. It was instantly transforming my whole mood back into bliss land.” SJ was an active adventurer when an operation went horribly wrong resulting in her being an incomplete quadriplegic. She has little use of her arms, has thumb use but needs constant care. But this has not stopped her from continuing her active lifestyle which includes her 10-year-old son Hamish. Jindabyne’s Paul Gardner first met SJ five years ago where he guided her in the sit ski on the slopes of Thredbo. They now ski about three weeks each year. “We mentioned just as a dream and maybe even as a joke, wouldn’t it be cool to go heliskiing. Definitely something I would never imagine I would be taking anyone on,” said Paul. As a precursor to Alaska they visited Japan in January and had been to Utah developing powder skiing skills with the sit ski. “We wanted to get warmed up to be familiar and make sure all our gear was ready to go, you can’t ski in Alaska with untested gear.” In April Paul flew ahead to Alaska taking the sit ski and 90 kilos of luggage by himself. “SJ took about 400 kilos, she took her electric wheelchair, stand up frame, all her son’s gear and all of Scotty’s gear,” described Paul.

Sarah-Jane ‘SJ’ Staszak with some Hamish and carer Scott in the helicopter.

This was just the start of a logistics journey including transportation in Alaska and the helicopter expedition. SJ said they then had to think how they were going to get the sit ski into the helicopter. Jennie Milton assisted with helicopter organisation as her husband Steve works for Black Ops Valdez. They had to hire a private helicopter for two days heliskiing. It was there last heli operation of the season with Paul saying, “They said yes straight away, they were so keen, and they reckon it is the best, we got a guy called Jerry who has been a guide for 28 years in Alaska.” Paul said they spent up to three hours the first day working out the helicopter, “not only for us but for all the guides, as they have never done it”. “The safety aspects are massive, not having anything flying off the sit ski into the blades. We were lucky it had a very big cage with a soft top that we could fold down.” “Jennie Milton, Kristen Arlberg, one of my friends from Alaska and another guide would fly up to the top of the mountain. We would get all our skis out, get the sit ski ready. The helicopter would fly back down to the base, would pick up SJ, her son Hamish and Scotty, the carer who wasn’t skiing. He was just in the helicopter to get her in and out of the helicopter.” SJ said from her perspective, “I am thinking wow, there were really a lot of logistics to consider.” “I have my son, managing him on the mountain, as I am unable to help. I’ve got to work out and plan scenarios making sure he is looked after in different situations you can come across when skiing. I think Paul had to consider the safety set up around himself managing the sit ski. We had to adapt different ideas for that big mountain not in a ski resort scenario, gosh, with me with quadriplegia being out in the elements like that, my body doesn’t thermo regulate. “I don’t have the ability to warm myself up biologically. My spinal cord is damaged so the messages don’t get up to my brain so there is just consideration of logistics of what if, the weather turns, and you’ve really got to be prepared to manage my medical and physical needs. Pressure sores in the sit ski for example, because I can’t feel if I am in discomfort. I could go on and on, there was so many.” Paul said unloading SJ from the helicopter on the first run they switched the blades off. “Scotty lifted her out of the helicopter, and we put her into the chair straight away. Once we got it dialled in, we left the blades running and Scotty would get out of the

helicopter and lift SJ onto one of the guides knees. It was so cold you couldn’t sit her in the snow all the time. Then we would put her in the sit ski and we would be ready to go.” “We skied Japan, that was great, but it is the mountains in Alaska. The biggest thing she was thrilled about though, yes it was great skiing for the two of us but getting to the bottom of the run and asking to be spun around in the sit ski watching her 10 year old son (Hamish) ski powder. I will be honest with you, every time I think about it, I get a bit teary.” “She was “oh look at my little boy, skiing a heli run” and man, he matured, he skied skis that were 25cm longer than he has ever skied. 20mils wider than he has ever skied, and he has become a little man. She never imagined she would see, never imagined she would ski herself again and no way she imagined she would watch her son ski again.” With fresh snow prior to their skiing SJ said it was powder. “It was a bit of an issue because it was coming to the point I was getting whip by the snow and I was getting uncomfortable. First world problem! I am never the one to say we need to stop. I am always up to keep on going. We can communicate verbally, he can usually hear me if I yell out. Because we were in nice soft powder, it wasn’t noisy, icy, so we could quiet easily yell out and talk to each other. “I have a lot of trust in Paul and don’t

Alpine News Winter - 2019 - 24

have a lot of fear generally. My kind of philosophy or head space is if something bad is going to happen now, its welcome too. I feel I had my fair share of bad stuff to happen, so I tend to really just let myself enjoy that kind of thing. I don’t let fear override the experience. Paul is really an exceptional ski guide with the sit ski and I just literally trust him with my life.” Paul said the team had many thanks to hand out and especially to Black Ops. “They not only took us heliskiing, they organised fishing for SJ, Scotty and Hamish, organised snowmobiling and they and Jen arranged dog sledding. They had SJ being hooked up behind the dog team direct to her sit ski.” “Then they organised shooting guns. Scotty, the carer just loves guns, it’s Alaska, everybody has guns. “The funniest story I had heard, Hamish rang me up laughing, he couldn’t stop laughing. He said, ‘Paul have you ever seen a quadriplegic shoot a gun? He said it is the funniest thing I have ever seen, everybody ran for cover.”

National Alpine Ski Team Named SKI and Snowboard Australia (SSA) recently announce the 2019-2020 National Alpine Ski Team. The team, selected from the SSA selection criteria, brings together 12 top skiers with a great mix of youth and experience. Among the group are some of the country’s most experienced alpine skiers, including Olympians Sami Kennedy Sim, Greta Small, Harry Laidlaw and Anton Grimus. Appearing as part of their first national team, rising stars Thomas Hoffman, Zoe Michael, Robbie Morrison and Finn Bowes have delivered strong performances on the international stage in recent months worthy of inclusion on the national side. Australia’s alpine team continues to deliver strong performances on the domestic and international circuits and this team is well placed to build on these results. Two-time Olympian Dominic Demschar has called time on his career, advising SSA he will retire from competition. The credentialed athlete represented Australia at the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games and 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, as well as the 2015 World Championships in Vail (USA). He achieved a number of podium results at FIS events including bronze at the Copper Mountain Nor-Am in 2017.

Close by Vail is Beaver Creek, where service runs to another level just like the increased altitude. So, visiting Vail first to acclimatise is helpful as Beaver Creek’s summit is another 240m higher. Colorado have numerous Epic Pass resort options including Keystone, Breckenridge, Crested Butte and affiliate with Telluride. From airport to resort is only 40 minutes, so once you change and strap the skis on you can be on the slopes within the hour. Park City Mountain Resort is huge with 7,033 acres of what seems like endless terrain. No matter what area of the town or the resort you stay, access is easy and be assured even a two week holiday here will barely scratch the sides. The Sundial Lodge at the Canyons is an ideal location with the Red Pine Gondola and Orange Bubble Express only steps away from the hotel. Peruse the trail map and every chair has options to suit all levels. Choose the groomed run while another member skis the black run, and you all end up at the same chair with some planning. The Tombstone Express is the perfect warm up chair offering long cruisers or widely spaced glades under the chair, before you tackle the steeper terrain of Ninety-Nine 90. Here you are presented with only black or double black options but on a powder day you will be richly rewarded. Move to the Park City side and a whole new world opens up and cruising takes on a new and lengthy meaning. Chutes, glades and steeps litter the surrounding ridgelines. Let alone the bowls of Whistler, Glacier, West, Symphony and Harmony Bowl that will have your legs playing their own tune. Everything about Whistler is enticing and there is ample terrain for every level. The charming village where both mountains diverge is exciting. Big White Ski Resort is Canada’s Favourite Family Resort THE feeling of happiness and fun permeates the winter air as you see smiling faces abound, and the infectious sound of laughter echoes through the trees. When it comes to winter fun there’s nothing better than enjoying a getaway with your family, and no one does family better than Big White Ski Resort. “All of us have pretty much had the trip of our life,” said Australia’s 1988 World Surfing Champion Barton Lynch. A trip of a lifetime is a good way to describe what’s in store once you step into the winter wonderland mountain village located at 1755 meters above sea level. With average temperatures of an enjoyable -5 Celsius you’ll quickly see why they call the snow ‘Okanagan Champagne Powder’. An average of 7.5 metres of the

light fluffy stuff turns the trees into ‘Snow Ghosts’ and the slopes into one huge family playground. Combine this with over 118 runs, five powder bowls, 15 lifts, and one gondola there’s more than enough terrain to keep your family happy. With short lift lines and no waiting around your kids will be clamouring out the door and onto the lifts as you see them begin turning every morning from your slope side accommodations. The family fun doesn’t stop there as Big White also features the world class Telus terrain park, Canada’s highest elevation skating rink, Snow Coaster Adventure Park, 25-metre ice climbing tower, dogsledding, snowmobiling and alpine night skiing. All to keep the most adventurous members of the family

Weeklong race camps help the keen skiers while the masters’ weeks are perfect for those looking to advance their skills at an advanced age. Once the snows been dusted off your boots, and the ski gear hung to dry, it’s time to indulge in Big White’s epic family après activities. 21 YEARS

Brand New Day By Steve Cuff HOTHAM have a great beginners first time day in June where guests receive a heavily discounted fully hosted mountain experience. Included in the package is a one-day beginner lift ticket, five hour lesson, all equipment hire and clothing for either skiing or snowboarding. Add a morning coffee, lunch at the ‘Bird’ plus an afternoon après drink and that is certainly the way to entertain and impress first timers. Guests last year also had a pleasant surprise when Mount Hotham Skiing Company General Manager, Belinda Trembath, pulled on the ski school uniform to teach an incognito lesson. Belinda said, “I thought it would be good to go undercover for the day and it was great fun.” “I was a rookie instructor who teamed up with Dean Sheppard who has been an instructor for the best part of 25-30 years. Dean and I used to teach back in the early nineties so it was a hoot. We had a group of young ladies who had come up especially from Melbourne to participate in our Brand New Day.” “It was a blizzard, it was a pretty tough day out there on the snow and it certainly gave me an insight into what our instructors are dealing with day in and day

out, and how challenging it can be to get our guests going when the weather is bad. “Just to hear their thrills and see the smiles on their faces it was a great day out. I think it is really important to stay close to your guests.” Belinda said the group did find out later it was the General Manager teaching them, suspecting someone must have whispered at lunch time. “The cat was out of the bag by the time we got to the après drink in the afternoon.” Belinda said she was able to chat to them all about their day and gather great feedback on how they might improve the program, what the barriers are on them potentially returning and what might entice them to return. Key points were, they loved being in the snow, the après and enjoyed the day and being able to ski. A good product offer would potentially entice them to return for another weekend. “We have a done a lot of work in the past few years doing focus groups with our instructors and also doing a lot of surveying of our guests and we have made quite a lot of changes to our programs. The benefit is people who bring their friends to the snow know we are looking after them all day and by the end of the day they all should be able to have a few runs down the Summit together.”

The Legend of

Alta - Utah ◼

DEEP: Tyler Knoles skiing legendary Alta powder. PHOTO: Alta Ski Area / Matt Wolfe

By Steve Cuff AS an aspiring snow photographer hooked on skiing in the early 90’s, I remember scouring magazines for exotic snow stories and admiring with envy deep powder photos. I could not ski that deep snow at the time, but that cared for little, it was all about the dream of wanting to and where. Reading Powder Magazine stories about legendary snowfalls at Alta in Utah captivated my imagination. Skiing a resort where they evoke the Interlodge rule, one where you are not allowed to leave any establishment should the steep slopes on either side of Little Cottonwood Canyon release and engulf you. And if you do leave you are fined by the police, this is serious snow. Lee Cohen is one of the great snow photographers who cut his teeth on the slopes of Alta and neighbouring Snowbird plus features countless times in Powder Magazine, the bible for skiers. Along the way he added to the folklore of Little

Cottonwood Canyon and defining Utah as a legendary powder mecca. Seeing Cohen’s images of skiers plundering powder, snow blasting well over head, faces full of snow and deep, it always seemed so deep, inspired many to visit Alta. Fortunately, I have skied Alta and Snowbird on several occasions, and while I still await my time to plunder that waist deep day of light dry powder, it does not matter. The images are there entrenched in my mind of what it is like. Plus, in all the days I have visited, the terrain and snow quality has been exceptional and accompanied by several powder days. Utah has become one of my favourite ski destinations and more so after the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. Having fond memories of capturing our first two gold medals with Steven Bradbury and Alisa Camplin only added to the allure. But for me it is all about the skiing, the terrain and the snow, plus being so close to Salt Lake City and the airport, you can be skiing in a very short time once you step off the plane. Hence why it is called Ski City. This past winter I was privileged to have lunch with the Alta crew at Alta Lodge. Communications Manager Andria Huskinson also invited Lee Cohen. To have lunch, talk photos and then cut a few laps on the legendary High Rustler run in a snowstorm was just the icing on the cake. Like many snow photographers Lee had his snow sabbatical saying he came out west after two years of college. “I went to Denver and ended up in the mountains at A Basin camping out, my buddy and I, we camped out for three months and were total ski bums,” said Lee. “We went on some road trips, I had heard of Alta, I don’t remember how I first heard about Alta, we had heard of the

powder myth and we went to Alta and I made up my mind I’m going to go to Alta when I get out of college. The day I got out of college I came here.” Lee said there were no other photographers at Alta at the time, but some at Snowbird. When he first started shooting Powder Magazine was the only place he submitted photos. He was first published in the mid 1980’s Now he says he cheery pics his days, “I have been spoilt by a lot of good years and skiing a lot of great snow.” “The photos get dictated by light and a lot of photography happens out of bounds now. I cling to my spots pretty hard. None of them are secret, there are no secrets around here, there are too many people. I have this one place I shoot it’s called Cohen’s Corner, or Lee’s Trees, everybody knows where it is. “It is just the perfect spot and I always go in there before anybody else, so I have seniority for going there more or less.” Driving into Little Cottonwood Canyon to Snowbird and a further two kilometres to Alta you would think they have made a mistake with the names. Big Cottonwood Canyon is the next canyon where Solitude and Brighton resorts are, all available on the ski city pass. Mount Superior dominates the sky and as you gaze upwards to the terrain you are about to enjoy; it is seriously impressive. As much as these two behemoth powder resorts beckon the off piste poacher, there is terrain for all levels, although Alta is a skiers only mountain. The beauty is the choices, and those who have skied will understand. You can ski very steep runs from a simple traverse or step over one rise and drop into to another long run. When the snow is on serious skiers are there for one reason, to plunder the legendary Alta powder.
