The First Word WE love the Snowy Mountains for many reasons, one being the weather and its unpredictability, including a decent snowfall in December to start summer off in great fashion. Now we invite the warm weather for the holiday period but it pays to keep in mind when in the alpine that being prepared with extra layers and watching the weather forecast is important. This edition is packed with useful information to make your holiday more enjoyable across the region, and to tempt you with ideas for travel plus events. The calendar is always full and a few of our favourites, the rodeos in Jindabyne and Tumbarumba, Blues Festival at Thredbo and the Snowies MTB and running festival at Lake Crackenback. One of the best stories is the Bombala Burnima Homestead on page 37. Do yourself a favour and just visit, it was a fascinating tour. We were hoping to have pages of information on the Go Jindabyne Master Plan, a look into what the NSW planners think Jindabyne will look like in 2036. On the downside it has not been released yet for public viewing, that will happen in 2020.
The good news, the plan has grown wider and much bigger to now incorporate the Snowy Mountains Special Activation Precinct (SAP). This will involve a new fresh additional study that will look at the resorts of Thredbo and Perisher, how they and other towns link with Jindabyne and how this can be improved overall. While it currently lacks major detail, to the frustration of many residents, be assured there is a bucket load of money the Deputy Premier John Barilaro indicated. In short, what will seriously be looked at in the SAP is, traffic, roads and transport to the resorts and who will be the head lease holder for Perisher Valley. At present the National Parks run the valley, Perisher (Vail Resorts) are responsible just for their infrastructure in the resort lease. We all know this had been a failure by National Parks who indicated years ago it wanted this area to be a year-round destination. They have not invested in any major infrastructure in Perisher Valley other than the minimum to keep it rolling along. Perisher (Vail Resorts) have pushed on and built new chairs and improved the resort. Let’s hope they can both come to

an agreement, helped by this new SAP and start improving the overall valley facilities. Mr Barilaro told Snowy Mountains Magazine, “I know there has been a small delay (Jindabyne master plan) but I would rather delay and get it right then not get it right at all.” “Where the school will be relocated seems to be the biggest issue the town is looking at and affordable housing,

everything else is in the plan from roads, infrastructure, transport, aged care, it’s all there. Now you add the SAP, which is tourism driven and the Snowy Hydro 2.0, I think it has become bigger than I expected and that’s probably part of the delay we now face.”

Environment Promise WORKING within the Kosciuszko National Park businesses are fully aware of the environmental and Perisher (Vail Resorts) understand their responsibility which is why this year they were awarded Excellence in Sustainability at the Snowy Monaro Business Awards. In 2017 Vail Resorts announced its Commitment to Zero which includes; (1) zero net emissions by 2030, (2) zero waste to landfill by 2030 and (3) a zero net operating impact to forests and habitat. Since this announcement the team at Perisher, led by the Environmental department have been working hard to change procedural and operational practices to achieve a commitment to zero. Tanya Bishop, Perisher Environment Manager said, “It’s an honour to be recognised for the effort the entire Perisher team makes across all areas of the business as we work together, as a team, towards our Commitment to Zero goals.” As part of this ongoing commitment to the environment, Perisher have held their annual Epic Promise Day. Launched in 2016, Epic Promise Day is aimed at bringing together the mountains, local communities, employees and guests to ignite a passion for the outdoors, conserve the natural environment and
support local communities for a bright and sustainable future. In early November over 130 Perisher employees diverted from their usual roles to give back to the environment and local community as part of the fourth annual Epic Promise Day. This year staff worked across three projects in resort and the local community including a tree planting initiative with Upper Snowy Landcare, a revegetation project within the Leichhardt Chairlift Construction corridor as well as rubbish collection throughout the resort areas of Perisher Valley and Smiggin Holes. After an overnight dusting of snow, staff ventured out to collect rubbish from Mt Perisher to Smiggin Holes while in Centre Valley an additional 600 native species were planted as part of the revegetation project on the new Leichhardt Quad Chairlift construction site. Over 4500 plants have now been planted since the completion of the chairlift earlier this year. This year Perisher partnered with Upper Snowy Landcare to plant 1000 trees across the two sites of Glemlm and Yarrabin in Berridale for their Dieback program. This program is focused on combating the widespread dieback of Eucalypts within the local area.
◼◼ PLANT: Perisher staff revegetating at the Leichhardt Chair. PHOTOS: Courtesy Perisher. “It was a great privilege to work with an enthusiastic Perisher team on their Epic Promise Day. We couldn’t believe how quickly the tree guards were assembled. This recent biodiversity plot brings the Upper Snowy Landcare tally up to 19,000 native seedlings planted over 19 sites within the affected dieback zone since 2015. Another 9,000 are due to go in by 2022 under existing grants,” said Laruen Van Dyke from Upper Snowy Landcare. You can read full details of Perisher commitments on their website at www. perisher.com.au/resort-info.

THE acclaimed Rix Wright sculpture, The Shearer, a sculpture with strong connections to the Snowy Monaro region has returned home and now resides in Cooma’s Centennial Park. Remembered as one of Australia’s most eminent sculptors, Rix Wright who lived in Delegate, created The Shearer when he was just 19 years old. The sculpture had resided in Crookwell and was recently purchased at auction to be returned back to the Monaro. Rix Wright who passed away in 2009 exhibited ‘The Shearer’ at the David Jones exhibition of 1949 before returning to Delegate. Daughter Bronwyn said the sculpture sat in the family garden for years before the Ashton family from Crookwell purchased the artwork. The sculpture unveiled by Rix’s children Bronwyn and Bruno Wright, holds a special place in the Snowy Monaro’s arts and culture landscape with the piece representing the region’s strong agricultural and wool industries. “This sculpture is the predecessor to another ‘Shearer’ sculpture displayed in Bombala and the ‘Wild Horses’ sculpture displayed in Delegate. The placement of the sculpture in Cooma creates a true Rix Wright art trail across the Snowy Monaro. It’s a fantastic representation of life on the Monaro,” said Snowy Monaro Regional Council Tourism Manager Donna Smith. The Shearer’s unveiling is the culmination of many years of hard work from the community who helped fund its purchase. More than 40 families and businesses contributed to the purchase of the sculpture, a plaque embedded in the rock plinth acknowledges the generosity of all those who contributed. “There are many people who have contributed to this project, in particular former Cooma-Monaro Shire Councillor Craig Mitchell who coordinated the donations, Bronwyn Wright who provided guidance for the sculpture’s placement, and previous owners of the sculpture Jim

and Libby Litchfield,” Mrs Smith said. Visitors looking to see the Rix Wright sculpture trail can visit Bombala and Delegate. A reproduction of an original sculpture by Rix Wright, the bronze Snowy River Brumbies can be viewed in Delegate. In Bombala’s Riverside Park, a sculpture ‘The Shearer’ dedicated to Australian shearers and the sheep industry is on display.

Celebrate Cherry Season THE Snowy Mountains town of Batlow are famous for not only apples, but their cherries which are big and juicy and freshly picked at the start of the summer. This fact is not lost on the Wildbrumby Distillery, with distiller Sebastian Druege making the trip last summer from the Thredbo Valley to Batlow for a truck full of Wilgro Orchards cherry goodness. The cherry season is upon us again and Wilgro are picking their cherry crop along

with fellow Batlow grower Greg Mouat from Mouat’s Farm. Both have roadside cellar doors on the Batlow Road on the north side of town. At Mouat’s Farm you can also pick your own if you prefer. You will need to be prompt as these big cherries are always in demand, and not just for the Wildbrumby cherry schnapps. Ralph Wilson from Wilgro said they have a good crop with a very good size. “Our cherries are quite big, so they usually have quite a bit of juice in them,” said Ralph. “For juicing that is very good for Wildbrumby, there is more recovery of juice out of the bigger cherries.” When you speak to Ralph you always learn something new about his fruit. He explained that the cherry stone is the same size whether it is a small cherry or a big cherry. “It’s the flesh around it that grows after the stone is formed, so if you buy small cherries you get mostly stone and little bit of flesh, if you buy a big cherry you get a lot more cherry flesh. The reason why we get a bigger cherry is because it takes longer for it to mature, and if it takes longer to mature it has more time to grow bigger.” At Wildbrumby, Sebastian praises the cherries, “They were really good, they had that beautiful fresh flavour, light marzipan notes, great jam flavours.”
◼◼
BIG: A box of cherries at Wilgro Orchards.
He explains the process where they de stork the cherries by hand, crush the cherry without breaking the stone before it is fermented for four weeks. From here they spend time in the famous still, which sits inside the Wildbrumby cafe and the process takes place to form alcohol. “It’s one of the popular schnapps, people wait for it to be released in mid-December

No matter how you like your cherries, either big and juicy from Batlow, or via the famous Wildbrumby schnapps, all will be available from December.
Adventure of a Lifetime YOUR first steps inside the caves unleash a euphorbium unlike no other. Here you are deep within limestone walls that have shaped and developed over millions of years. Yes, Yarrangobilly Caves is like no other experience in the Kosciuszko National Park, one where not only you but the guides admit themselves they often see new aspects of each cave they have not witnessed before. Such is the unexpected splendour that surrounds you in each respective cave, it is simply amazing to witness. Tiny droplets of water that seep through cave walls and ceilings every day, to then one day eventually form stalactites and stalagmites is truly mother nature at her finest. The whole Yarrangobilly precinct is a must visit, from the beautifully resorted heritage listed Caves House, the selfguided South Glory Cave or the numerous guided cave tours, each demands its own viewing. Jillabenan Cave while the smallest, is also the most accessible as you embark on a 73 metre journey inside this two million year old cave witnessing impressive displays of delicate straws, shawls and cave coral.
Jersey Cave along with Jillabenan have regular daily schedules, but during the main holiday period you should take advantage of other tours that are not always scheduled. The Castle Cave tour offers that extra sense of adventure with a 2.5 to 3 hour tour of the unlit cave. One of the more remote caves, in a location too isolated for electricity, Castle Cave was developed in the 1900s. After a 30-min hike up the Yarrangobilly Valley, you’ll be given helmets and lights. Led by an experienced NPWS guide, you’ll discover the cave’s most wonderous crystal formations lit up by torch light. These include a vast array of speleothems, from formations like King Solomons Temple, to delicate straws and helicities. It is advised to plan ahead and pre book with all tours available online. And no need to worry about the weather, the caves are always a pleasant 13 degrees inside, no matter what is happening outside so pack an extra layer and wear sturdy footwear. Another note is to pack your own lunch, as the Visitor Centre only stock snacks and bring your swimmers where you can take a dip in the natural thermal pool that resides around a pleasant 27 degrees.

Snowy 2.0 Update WHILE the Snowy Scheme was celebrating their recent 70th anniversary, Snowy Hydro have been busy behind the scenes on the new Snowy 2.0 project. The approved exploratory works are charging ahead and the Environmental Impact Statement has been exhibited. A Snowy Hydro spokesperson said they had “submitted a comprehensive, 10,000-page Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Snowy 2.0 Main Works, informed by more than a dozen scientific and technical studies.” “During a six-week public exhibition period in late 2019, about 200 submissions were received - a relatively low number for a major project. By comparison, WestConnex received thousands of submissions. We appreciate the broad community support demonstrated for Snowy 2.0 and believe the Main Works submissions reflect the understanding by the local community that while there will be some mostly temporary project impacts, Snowy 2.0 will deliver economic growth and jobs to the region, along with broader economic and environmental benefits. Roads contractor Leed Engineering and Construction is progressing upgrades to access roads, while principal contractor Future Generation has mobilised large plant to site and is constructing worker accommodation and preparatory works at the main access tunnel portal. The Snowy 2.0 project is a pumped hydro-electric expansion of the existing Snowy Scheme that will link the existing Tantangara and Talbingo reservoirs through a series of new underground tunnels and an underground hydroelectric power station. This report will be published by the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment in the coming months. The department will make an assessment and provide a recommendation to the Minister for Planning, who will make a final determination, which is expected to be in early 2020. Be Immersed in the Snowy Scheme WHEN Snowy Hydro celebrated the recent 70th anniversary of the Snowy Scheme, they unveiled the latest technology in terms of visitor experience with their brand-new Immersive Theatre. Now visitors and local community members can experience the mighty Snowy Scheme as never seen before at the Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre theatre in Cooma. This interactive, state-of-the-art theatre is a world-class experience and will be a huge drawcard to the Snowy Mountains. Attendees for the 70th celebrations had
all worked on the “Snowy”, and they were highly impressed with how the theatre brings to life all aspects of the scheme. Snowy Hydro worked with the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) to incorporate the latest technology into the theatre. There is a massive 14m-wide by 4m high projection screen, complemented with floor projection to welcome visitors into the interactive space. Motion sensors integrated into the theatre allow visitors to interact with content on both the wall and floor projections.
◼◼
IMPRESSIVE: The new Immersive Theatre in Cooma brings to life the Snowy Scheme history with flyovers across the Snowy Mountains. PHOTO: Snowy Hydro. Visitors can take a virtual flyover of the Snowy Scheme guided by one of the Discovery Centre staff, and delve into the Snowy story, which highlights Snowy Hydro’s past, present and future. The experience takes people behind the scenes to view the Scheme’s tunnels, dams and hydro-power stations, and looks back at where the Snowy story began. Some of the archival imagery and film, provided by the National Archives of Australia, has never been seen before. According to the QUT technical experts, there is nothing like Snowy Hydro’s immersive theatre anywhere else in Australia. The combination of projection with full 3D people-tracking technology means the options for
visitor experiences are endless and will ultimately showcase a range of different assets across the Scheme and the business. The Discovery Centre in Cooma is your gateway to visiting the mighty Snowy Scheme, which is still considered one of the engineering wonders of the world. Over 100,000 men and women from more than 30 countries worked on the scheme during the main construction. The Discovery Centre has memorabilia and books detailing all aspects of the Scheme, as well as touring guides. On pages 16-17, Snowy Mountains Magazine gives you a quick tour of the scheme, and where and how you can visit the Scheme this summer.

Snowy 70th Celebrations By STEVE CUFF THE mighty Snowy Scheme is now entrenched in Australian engineering folklore. It’s creators, the men and women who breathed life into the scheme with hard work, grit and undiminished determination still have immense pride in their achievements. The Scheme turned 70 this year, and the faithful workers, most long retired, gathered in mass for the official celebrations. Along with meeting other workers and friends, it was a time to reminisce about the glory days of Snowy construction as if it were only yesterday. On the lawns of Snowy Hydro headquarters in Cooma, to the smaller towns of Khancoban and Talbingo, stories were recited of how they, mostly as young workers or immigrants from a foreign land worked side by side establishing an unrivalled camaraderie. Here is a snippet of images from the events, with more photos published on the Snowy Mountains Magazine website, snowymagazine.com.au.

Tour the Scheme
THE Mighty Snowy Scheme was an engineering wonder of the world, and to this day is still fascinating to comprehend. While you can read all about it, the best way to view the scheme is drive. To celebrate the 70th anniversary for the Snowy, we have put together a brief description of what you can see in each town. There are so many options, depending on where you start from, so refer to our map on page 28 to get you started.
◼◼ Cooma Discovery Centre memorabilia photos. COOMA The headquarters for Snowy Hydro and the Discovery Centre, which has a plethora of memorabilia, books, souvenirs, photos

Peak Performance Camps THE Snowy Mountains has long lured visitors for adventures with stunning alpine vistas and clean mountain air. It is this environment that Peak Performance fitness camps will use to attract those wanting to both improve their fitness and health through training and nutrition. Peak Performance, a new business in its infancy is a specialised and dedicated training camp based out of Jindabyne. Their objective is to attract people from all over Australia to their camps who want to

dedicate time to themselves and change their lives through nutrition and training. The three directors, Dan Hutley, Renae Buchner and Nicolas Mclean each bring different assets to the venture and all are involved with business in Jindabyne. Head trainer Dan Hutley owns Precision Training Centre where all the camps will be run. Renae Buchner is the cross fit specialist and Nicholas Mclean heads up marketing and supervises the specialist training with InBody, the only body composition machine in the snowy region. Peak Performance was developed after Nicholas returned from a Titan Fitness camp in Thailand. Nic said he lost eight kilograms in Thailand plus was training with Dan Hutley at Precision Training Centre. “I do a lot of my PT work at Precision and lost a further 20 kilos of body fat. There is really great training in this town ( I also do regular PT sessions with Manuela and Michael at High Country Fitness) but there was not an all-round nutrition centre where you can book training, eat super nutritious food or get scanned by the latest technology like our InBody 270 body composition machine which I used regularly at Titan Fitness,” said Nic. “Dan and I approached Renae who is the

We see so many people try and out train bad food and lifestyle choices and at the end of the day nutrition is around 80% of results.” Peak Performance also runs Peak Nutrition Cafe (centre) in Jindabyne’s Town Centre, where Nic said they are already seeing the locals enjoying great whole nutritious food. “It has a full protein shake bar as well as a range of

We also have plans to look at Merimbula so we can have a beach camp base as well and have a six-week boot camp for our locals program starting in January 2020 which will take them down to the camp for some training.” You can find out more about the camps and fitness at www.peakfitnesscamp. com.au or visit the cafe.

Hannels Spur Adventure
THE renowned Hannels Spur walking track on the western side of the Snowy Mountains is once again accessible for experienced bushwalkers following maintenance work by National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) staff and a group of dedicated volunteer walkers including one of Australia’s foremost mountaineers, Tim Macartney-Snape. NPWS Manager Anthony Evans said the Hannels Spur project took many weeks of planning due to the logistical challenges of working in such a remote and steep area of Kosciuszko National Park. “The volunteers were an amazing group of people who worked tirelessly for several days, which resulted in over 4km of trail between Moiras Flat and Byatts Camp being cleared of overgrown vegetation, including 500 vertical metres,” Mr Evans said. “It has been a great outcome for us. Hannels Spur carries so much history.” Tim Macartney-Snape, one of the first Australians to reach the summit of Mount Everest and a member of the work party said the track works were significant as it reopens the greatest vertical ascent of any walk in Australia.
“Hannels Spur walking track is historically significant, it follows the route taken by Polish explorer Paul Strzelecki, James McArthur and two Aboriginal guides when Strzelecki became the first European to ascend (and to name) Mt Kosciuszko in 1840,” said Mr Macartney-Snape. “Before the 2003 fires, it served as a favourite training walk for Australian mountaineers, including members of expeditions to the Himalayas due to the walk’s extreme hard climb through remote wilderness, where navigational skills and bushwalking experience are essential.” Fit hikers can complete the ascent in one day, but they should be aware it will take in excess of eight hours. For most it is recommended an overnight camp. Recently I crossed paths with two hikers on the trail in November, so it is amazing how word has spread of the trail. The walk starts at Geehi Flats on the Alpine Way and climbs to Moiras Flat, onto Hannels Spur and then Mt Kosciuszko via Muellers Pass and the Main Range Track. Mr Evans said Hannels Spur remains one of the most difficult walks around, with the most vertical ascent of any climb in Australia (1800 metres). Further works are still to be undertaken next year.
“Hikers are reminded that extensive bushwalking experience and preparation is needed before attempting the spur, particularly for above the treeline where walkers could run into challenging navigation if it is misty. “Know how to use a map and compass, but a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) is one of the most important items when bushwalking in remote areas,” said Mr Evans.

Six Stages of Mt Bike Stamina THE Snowies MTB Festival in February will be elevated to a new level with two new trails on show plus riders having the choice of “The Wild Brumby” 6 Stage 128km event or “The Brumby” 5 Stage 90km event. The Wild Brumby 6 stage event will see riders eagerly anticipating the all-new 35.5km Snowy Legends Descent from the top of Thredbo’s Gunbarrel chair, via the new Ricochet trail and the full length of the Thredbo Valley Track (TVT) to Gaden Trout Hatchery in Jindabyne. The festival is a gruelling test of stamina over three days starting with two stages on Friday. Stage 1 is the 19.5 km Thredbo Summit Smash, an ascent climbing of 533m elevation from Lake Crackenback to Thredbo, and Stage 2, the Lake to Lake 16.2km Jindabyne to Hatchery Bay and return, an epic journey on the picturesque Lake Jindabyne Foreshore. On Saturday riders in The Wild Brumby event will tackle Stages 3 and 4 simultaneous, the new Ricochet trail in operation for Stage 3 before competitors
then continue directly into Stage 4 to Jindabyne. This section will be an exhilarating roller coaster, especially the new more technical Lower TVT trail, which many of the riders may not have encountered prior. The Stage 5 Happy Hour 5.5km Time Trial at Lake Crackenback Resort will set the scene for the final day, where the endurance will show through on the Stage 6, 45km Release the Cracken cross country final leg. The winner will have ridden 128 kilometres across the 6 stages, and their legs will certainly be feeling the pinch during the final kilometres on Sunday. Entrants looking for a less technical event can compete in The Brumby 5 Stage event which covers 90km, with Saturday’s Stage 4 a difference, and a shorter final day cross country of only 30km. A team event is also an option for those who want to share the load, with two or three riders in The Wild Brumby 128km event, and a two rider option in The Brumby 90km event. On Sunday keen mountain bikers can be

The combination of technically challenging remote wilderness trails, the best technical riding found anywhere in Australia plus climbs and descents with huge elevation gains will ultimately decide who has the strength, speed and stamina to prevail.

Pedal Assisted Mt Biking MENTION the term E-bike some years back and you may well have been frowned upon. Now though, everyone has come to their senses and realise that while hard core riders still love their traditional mountain bike, the E version assist those who may
not be as fit, but also want to experience the vast trails here in the Snowy Mountains. Let’s be clear, traditional mountain bikes are great and perfect for fitness and if you are just cruising gentle trails. But e-bikes offer more options to other people. You still

have to pedal, you just have an additional power source via the electric motor. For the novice rider you still ride and enjoy some exercise, plus can keep up with your younger friends who like the traditional bike. Then when the gradients steepen on the uphill, you just boost your power and away you ride. Without delving into every brand and detail, the basics are you still do have to pedal, and the more you pedal the electric motor assists you. Most e-bikes have different power settings, meaning if you are just cruising you should set it to the minimal power, increase power as the workload becomes harder for you, and then give full boost if required to help climb the big hills. There is a trade-off though, battery life. The more power you use the more you drain the battery. Modern batteries have good life but understanding your power levels is the key to having an enjoyable ride all the way out and home.
All bike shops have a range of traditional mountain bikes and e-bikes for hire. In Jindabyne you can hire E-bikes from Sacred Ride and Alpine Sports in Nugget’s Crossing. Alpine Sports have Scott Genius and Spark full suspension bikes, and Avanti front suspension bikes. Sacred Ride have a fleet of e-bikes including brands Giant, Merida and Norco, plus kids e-bikes and will have schedule guided rides this summer, follow their Facebook page for updates. Lake Crackenback Resort have mountain bike hire and e-bike hire plus have schedule tours, see following page. Thredbo have mountain bike and e-bike hire. Note there are restrictions for e-bikes on the Thredbo chairlift, they must be pedal assist and weigh under 30kg. Ask at your local bike shop for maps of the trails and different rides you can explore. There is so much to see it would be a waste to just ride one trail. Venture out and enjoy world class trails and scenery.

Full Moon Kosciuszko Ride By STEVE CUFF THE stunning glow of the sun setting in the distant western sky is not a new phenomenon, but to witness it at the top of Mt Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest mountain while you also await the rising moon is special. The Sacred Ride bike shop offer their ‘Lunarcy Ride’ every full moon during the summer months. Whether you embark on a traditional mountain bike, or one of their rental E-bikes is your own choice, the later making it easily achievable for all levels of rider as you ascend the Summit Road from Charlotte Pass to the top. this great structure. Then to Rawson Pass where you lock your bikes before the final walk to 2228m above sea level. By no means is it warm this night and we are not the only group as voices can be heard in the dark as the occasional torch light flashes at the path for direction. Now it is a waiting game. The moon is a playing the game, it is on schedule as always, but we must wait for some pesky cloud to break open and expose the mountain to the moonlight. To say it is a cool experience is an understatement and a first for most in our group. You can wait and watch as long as you like, but you have to descend at some point, so we retreat to our bikes and light up the trail on the descent. We have guides at front and rear, so there is no concern for losing your way, just follow the trail at your own pace. For those with bravado it is a very quick exhilarating descent, but the leisurely pace suits most as you absorb the bumps and concentrate on navigation. On return to Charlotte Pass the bikes are loaded and all that awaits is the food and celebratory drinks at the Take Pot Luck cafe at Sacred Ride Headquarters. You can book ahead for the Kosciuszko tour or this summer they will offer a Hatchery Bay ride in Jindabyne. See ad details below for contacts.

Mountain Bike Options SUMMER mountain bike enthusiasts should have a constant smile as they ride with new and upgraded trails across the Snowy Mountains region offering more options than ever before. For the more experienced the highlight will be the recently opened lower 18.4km section of the Thredbo Valley Track (TVT) from Lake Crackenback Resort to Gaden Trout Hatchery in Jindabyne. Since its anticipated opening in October, riders and keen walkers on the shared trail have had nothing but praise. Combined with the upper 16.5km section from Thredbo to Lake Crackenback Resort, it is the signature trail in the region that offers a full day ride along the entire 35km trail. Now that the two sections are joined, the trail could also be nominated to be included as an International Mountain Biking Association’s Epic Trail. Describing both individual sections sees a stark contrast between the two, so riders be aware that the top section is much easier, and the lower section rated more technical and difficult. The Upper TVT is undulating and mostly single dirt track weaving its way along the Thredbo River. It starts at Friday Flat, Thredbo and finishes at Lake Crackenback
Resort. A National Park entry fee applies. A highlight of this section is the five river crossing bridges that apart from offering tremendous scenic opportunities, breaks up the journey. You will also pass through Ngarigo and Thredbo Diggins campsites, making these venues an ideal camping ground to base yourself. Starting at the Skitube, or Lake Crackenback Resort, the new Lower TVT as mentioned is more technical, but one of the points riders and hikers should consider is there are no exit points. Once you cross over the Thredbo River at Skitube, you will be in a remote area for the full length of the trail before emerging back over the Thredbo River at Gaden Trout Hatchery. Mobile phone service is also very limited on the trail. With armoured rocky trail, more inclines and descents it offers the experienced rider a good challenge to finish off the whole trail. Once at Gaden Trout Hatchery, you have the option to continue riding all the way to Jindabyne via the Hatchery Bay Trail. This summer planning and work will start on the final leg of the TVT where it will extend up from Thredbo to Dead Horse Gap. This will be a dedicated mt bike trail, separate from the Thredbo

For the ultimate day journey, take the Thredbo chairlift and then ride all the way to Banjo Paterson Park in Jindabyne, some 60km. The intermediate 7km Hatchery Bay Trail starts in Jindabyne and ventures out to the bay, hugging Lake Jindabyne virtually all its route. Sensational scenic ride and strategically place seats to take a rest and absorb the view. This trail suits all riders and is dirt trail with only minimal rock sections.
On the east side of Lake Jindabyne, all accessible from town over the dam wall, the Tyrolean trails offer the intermediate to advanced riding a great network of cross country trails. Ranging from blue to black and again taking in scenic views of town and the lake, these trails are ideal especially when the weather closes in on the mountains. The Mt Gladstone trail network in Cooma has seen constant upgrades with the trail builders now saying it is “next level gnarly.” Six new trails have been built over

the past two years including a number of intermediate climbs and downhills, and prior to winter a new black diamond climb and downhill. About to open this summer is a brand new double black run yet to be named. This will add to the two black and two double trails that are all accessible with car shuttles. The trail builders were quite excited that there are now six downhill trails that are all accessed by easy car shuttling up Mt Gladstone to the lookout.
SUMMER visitors looking for activities can find a good mix at Lake Crackenback Resort, where they offer a host of free activities for in house guests or purchase a $10 day pass per person to access golf, canoeing, trampolines, archery and more. The resort alone has extensive walking and mountain biking trails, and exciting guided adventures including river sledding, Segway tours, fly fishing, hiking and mountain biking tours including the Cascade Hut and Sunset Mt Kosciuszko ride. Their brand new guided tour for this summer is the e-bike tours riding the Lower TVT which includes lunch, snacks, e-bike, NPWS entry and shuttle pick up from Jindabyne. Bookings are essential with pricing at 2-4ppl @ $325ea or 5+ people @ $260ea. This tour is aimed at intermediate riders who don’t necessarily have the first aid or mechanical knowledge/equipment for riding in such a remote area. For an introductory tour, the 1hr Guided E-bike Teaser is a guided hot lap around the resort for riders to test ride an e-bike on single track and quiz the guide on aspects of the e-bike. The 1hr grommet ride orientates young riders to the LCR trail network with some useful hints and tips and only runs during school holidays. Enquire at the Activate office for all tours and activities.

Hiking Attire VENTURING into the high country for a day of hiking is a great summer pastime but remember a few key points before you depart. Firstly, you must stay hydrated and have energy, so stock enough water to last all day, two litres of water for an extended journey. A Life Straw bottle is ideal to filter the mountain stream water. You use more energy at elevation so pack
we believe life is too short to blend in
lunch and numerous snacks. The sun burns your skin quicker at altitude, so wearing long hiking pants and shirts negates these issues, just pack sunscreen for your face and hands. You will need a hat, peaked or wide brim. Plus, long attire will keep all the annoying insects and march flies at bay. Properly designed hiking clothing, like the Kuhl brand pictured here have breathable gussets and the pants have stretch gussets for when you are stretching for a longer step on stones over a river crossing. Having a decent size backpack allows you to store everything, including an extra fleece layer plus a wind jacket. Life in the lower valley is rarely the same as the higher alpine, so don’t underestimate the difference in temperature and wind speed. Weather changes quickly so always check the forecast before departing. You never think the worst can happen, but always stock a first aid kit and bandages in case anyone in your party is injured. Remember, you are a long way from help, especially in more remote areas. A swiss army knife or Leatherman is useful. It is advisable to travel in a group, but if you are hiking alone you must advise someone of your intended route and expected time of return. Carrying a personal locator beacon (PLB) is advisable for hiking in remote areas with no phone service. Phones only work in certain areas in the high mountains. You can hire a PLB from the NPWS in Jindabyne, and all visitors centres, and outdoor shops have various maps. Lachlan wears High Country Outfitters clothing. Kuhl Radikl pant $139.95, Kuhl Airspeed shirt $119.95, Sontimer stretch belt $39.99, Scarpa Terra GTX hiking boots and Osprey Kestrel 48L backpack.

Long Plain Adventure By STEVE CUFF HAVE you ever been tempted to turn off for an adventure on a dusty dirt road? Then Long Plain Road in the northern region of Kosciuszko National Park should be your number one choice, just leave early to embark on a full day of adventure. Turn off Snowy Mountains Highway and a fork in the road for Port Phillip Trail may be tempting but that is for another day. Continue and take a left detour to Long Plain Hut, your first stop where you will see this wonderful old high-country hut. Also ideal for caravan and camping. As you venture along Long Plain you are sure to encounter numerous brumbies, often just grazing in the plains. After a lengthy and mostly uninteresting drive, except for power lines, brumbies and crossing the Murrumbidgee River, Cooinbill Hut and campground is to your right. Stop and admire this quaint hut. Each hut also has a signage board and history. Look for right turn to Blue Water Holes where the landscape changes to a more tree lined narrow road. But it now becomes more interesting.

Coolamine Homestead Picnic
◼◼
Long Plain Hut
Coolamine Homestead is just one of the unexpected treasures on this trip, and apart from these classic 1800 built huts, inside you will see the walls lined with old newspapers. If you have the time you can catch up on some old news. Like a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, Blue Water Holes is your final stop. Walk, see sign boards and explore as you could spend a good portion of your day here. Clarkes Gorge Walk, a 2km round trip and the 7km round trip to Nicholls Gorge Walk are a few options. The steppingstone river crossing will test your balance and past Clarkes Gorge on an unmarked difficult steeper 4km trail you can also hike to Cooleman Waterfall. The signage boards also offer details on exploring the caves near Nicholls Gorge. In late 2019 the National Parks and Wildlife removed several Brumbies from the Blue Water Holes campgrounds. The wild horses would often be seen licking the fireplaces and roaming through the popular campground. As with any remote trip, be prepared with water, food, first aid and suitable supplies for your length of stay. For more reading on the area, search high plains area on the nationalparks.nsw.gov.au website.

The Top of Mt Kosciuszko By STEVE CUFF FOR those who have climbed Mt Kosciuszko, standing on the top of Australia offers a sense of achievement and reward for all the sweat and steps you have endured to reach the summit. In reality, it is more a solid hike rather than a true mountain climb, but a summit awaits any mountain adventurer with two options to conquer Australia’s highest peak, from either the top of Thredbo or Charlotte Pass. After taking the Thredbo Kosciuszko
Express chairlift to Eagles Nest, the 6.5km hike each way is easily identifiable along a dedicated walking path. This gentle incline makes it accessible for most with even minor levels of fitness. The Charlotte Pass route, approximately 9km each way follows the Summit Road passing Seaman’s Hut to Rawson Pass where Australia’s highest toilet is often welcomed. While longer, it is no more strenuous although the ascent to Seaman’s Hut raises the heart beat somewhat. At Rawson Pass the Thredbo and Charlotte Pass routes intersect for the last

When Mt Kosciusko was first named by the Polish explorer Paweł‚ Edmund Strzelecki in 1840, he along with James Macarthur and indigenous guides Charlie Tarra and Jackey climbed from the western side along Hannels Spur, a strenuous 1800m of vertical through bush. That climb is now accessible for the fit, see story on page 19. Strzelecki named the mountain in honour of Polish-Lithuanian freedom fighter General Tadeusz Kościuszko, due to its perceived resemblance to the Kościuszko Mound in Krakow, Poland. The name was previously spelt Mount Kosciusko an Anglicisation, but the spelling “Mount Kosciuszko” was officially adopted in 1997 by the Geographical Names Board of New South Wales. While the actual climb is moderate, the weather does play a huge part when planning your day, and don’t underestimate its potential. On a calm sunny day, it is paradise, but it can change. The higher regions of the Australian alpine sit mostly above the tree line and should cloud roll in you will be submersed in a white out. Likewise, when the wind
Snowy Mountains Magazine - 2019 - 30
blows you will be advised to have a good wind jacket and extra layers, as the temperatures can plummet. It is essential you consult the weather maps and forecast and be prepared with food, water, sunscreen and extra clothing. At 2228 metres above sea level it is small compared to say the Himalayas, but it is our highest mountain and each year hundreds of thousands of people make the effort to stand on the roof of Australia. On the busy long weekends and holiday periods there will be a wait to have your photo taken standing on top of the cairn. For hikers preferring a guided walk, Thredbo have regular guided trips that also have additional commentary from their knowledgably guides. You can find more details at Thredbo.com.au but book ahead.

New Thredbo Gondola VISITORS to Thredbo this summer will see construction work happening adjacent to the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift where a new eight person gondola is replacing the old Merritts double chair. The Merritts Gondola will be ready for the 2020 snow season where it will be a welcomed new addition for guests to access the Cruiser slopes from the Valley Terminal area. The gondola will whisk guests to the alpine in just 6 minutes, plus will have a mid station for snow enthusiasts to alight for access to the Friday Flat slopes. During the following summer months, the gondola will also be used for mountain biking access to the lower All Mountain Trail, plus will be ideal for sight seeing passengers. Doppelmayr Australia, based in Jindabyne will build the lift with components and gondola cabins visible

in the Friday Flat car park area. Guests can view and sit inside a new gondola cabin near the base of the Kosciuszko Express chair. The auction sale of the 112 double chairs raised $240,00 which Thredbo donated to different charities and nonprofit organisations. Thredbo also have plans to upgrade the existing Merritts Mountain House Restaurant in the Cruiser area once the gondola is finished. The gondola is the first key project
as part of grander plans and upgrades across the resort. Expect more news to be revealed in 2020 on new chairlifts. This summer Thredbo will also increase their car parking in the Friday Flat area with a new $2 million upgrade. The new car park will increase parking with 75 new positions and will be located above the existing road near the start of the TVT trail. It is one of three planned car park extensions planned which will help to alleviate congestion in the busy winter months.

Hops the Tops at Kosciuszko Craft Beer Festival THE annual Kosciuszko Craft Beer Festival is flowing into Thredbo with a jam-packed weekend schedule of thirstquenching events on February 7 - 8. Now in its 7th year, the Festival is your ticket to the tops in hops and the best in local brewing. The frothy fun will kick off with an ode to beer at the Beer, Ales and Tales Dinner on Friday evening in the Kosciuszko Room. Fascinating Burnima Homestead Tour EMBARKING on a tour of the historic Burnima Homestead is much more than just viewing this majestic 1896 building near Bombala. Owner and guide Steve Rickett who has restored the building to its original condition takes you on a journey back in time, setting the scene in a classical opulent 1930’s era. He narrates the aristocracy of the time, where high Victorian society ruled, servants attended to their every whim, and how the homestead owners went about their business. All fascinating theatre on the two-hour tour. As you progress through the 32 rooms, it becomes clear how life in Bombala could have been for those with wealth and stature within the community. And why was there no door knob on the outside of the front door? But life could have been totally different for Burnima Homestead if

Bombala would have become the capital of Australia. Steve has studied the history and read through Burnima documents. At the time of Federation the government were in search for a capital site, and the Governor General, Lord Hopeton and politician King O’Malley had already decided “Bombala” will be the capital as it suited the criteria of cool climate, not on the coast for fear of invasion and water supply. Bombala was also the only site that could offer a port (for trade and to construct the city), the Port of Eden. Therefore it was chosen, plus it met the criteria. Influence from the major merchants of Sydney saw it as a competitive threat and intervened, thus Canberra was chosen in a selection process over 44 other towns, including Dalgety, allowing all trade to continue through the Sydney wharfs. Had Bombala been successful as the capital, the home chosen for the Governor General would have been Burnima. The Homestead was built for grazier Mr Henry Tollemache Edwards in 1896 by Frederick Young of Queanbeyan, builder of “Yarralumla”, residence of the Governor General. Steve is a walking encyclopaedia on the area and affords terrific walking commentary. The tales told on this fascinating tour ensures Burnima is a must-visit attraction for those with any interest of local history and the Monaro plains.

Strap in for Cowboy Action WHEN the cowboys strap in for the Jindabyne Man from Snowy River Rodeo in December, one young local Jayden Miners will be keen to impress. Fresh off his novice bull ride win in Gundagai in November, and a recent trip to the USA for the Youth World Bull Riding Finals, Jayden, like all the cowboys would like to add to his prizemoney and further cement himself as a contender of the future. The 17 year old had never been on a plane before his July trip to Abilene, Texas, where he was accompanied by god father Matt Ladhams, a former bull rider himself. Competing in the U19 age group at Cowtown Coliseum, Jayden found the bulls a bit tough at this particular event where he managed 7 seconds before being thrown in his first ride. Over the four days of competition Jayden covered three head of stock, but unfortunately, he bucked down on each. But that is just part and parcel of this tough sport. In Texas, riders also had the chance to showcase their skills to the college scouts, and potential scholarships. During the trip Jayden also met with former world champion bull rider and Hall of Famer Garry Leffew, who now conducts clinics for riders.
Showing the great community spirit around the area, much of the trip was funded via a fundraiser where local businesses supported, including the Jindabyne Rodeo where Jayden and many other local juniors have competed countless times as a youngster on the rise. Jayden said the experience is something he will never forget, and he is forever grateful for all those who supported him to be able to compete in the USA. He has returned home with a lot of great memories plus a buckle and ring from the event. In Australia Jayden will compete in both the ABCRA rodeo Circuit and the Pro Rodeo circuit throughout Australia with his traveling partner and cousin Clayton Miners who has this year taken out the ABCRA steer riding title in Queensland. The Miners boys always put in a great effort, ands when you hear their name this summer give an extra cheer. The Jindabyne Rodeo is staged at John Connors Oval right in the middle of town on Saturday December 28. It falls on a weekend this year, so expect a big crowd to attend to see the dust fly and the broncs and bulls attempt to dislodge the cowboys. There is a full day of action with gates open at 10.30am and 11am start.

Heritage Feasability Study THE Feasibility Assessment for the Snowy Alpine Heritage Centre is nearing the final stages of completion. The centre is envisaged as an architecturally designed centre located in a visually prominent position in Jindabyne which will include contemporary and highly interactive experiences interpreting the history and heritage of the region, as well as a cafe, bar, function centre, playground and retail shop. The Centre would be a game changer for non-winter tourism to Jindabyne as well as a popular place for locals. Potential sites for the centre have been assessed as part of the feasibility with preferred sites shortlisted. These sites have been discussed with the Go Jindabyne team for potential inclusion in the Go Jindabyne master plan. The draft feasibility study estimates that up to 177,000 people could visit the centre annually by its 10th year of operation. Economic analysis is underway and initial projections indicate the centre could generate 35 full time equivalent jobs in the first year of operation, increasing to 70 jobs in year 10. The next steps for the committee will include implementing the study’s recommendations on the appropriate legal structure for the governance of the centre
and then commencing negotiations with landowners of the identified sites to obtain an option for purchase of the land once funding is secured. The Committee believes that the project is an excellent match for funding under the Special Activation Precinct (SAP) funding and is hopeful that the support the Deputy Premier has indicated in funding the study, and in discussions since will continue once the full outcomes of the feasibility study are clear. Spokesman for the committee Tom Barry said the feasibility study has “come up to our expectations and more.” “I feel very positive that we have a great basis to obtain money from the government and one of our next jobs will be to present the feasibility study and start negotiations for a suitable block of land,” said Tom. “The indications are that there could be up to 100 people employed in the construction of the project, employment of local people and attracting people to the town. The economic feasibility study also goes a lot further and indicates a very positive ripple effect from it jobs wise and business wise.” There has been extensive research done into the project with Jindabyne based TRC Tourism completing the feasibility study with input from Dabyne Planning and Canberra company Thylacine. All businesses
are experts in their field. Recently the Go Jindabyne master plan has been delayed in its draft presentation to the public. It has now grown into the Special Activation Precinct which is looking beyond just Jindabyne. A key part of the whole community discussion with the NSW planning department for Go Jindabyne has been improving year-round tourism and creating more year-round jobs so that the region does not solely rely on the winter snow tourism and just the busy summer holiday periods. Surely this project ticks all the boxes.

Snowy Grammar Future The Snowy Mountains Grammar School have revealed their “Our Strategic Plan 2020” which has been presented to students and parents. The strategic plan has seven strategic priorities, Wellbeing, Professional practice, Academic progression, Innovative practice, Well-rounded education, Community and Sustainable resources and is part of an overall masterplan. The independent school based in Jindabyne has seen strong growth in recent years with an almost 18% increase in full-time student population since the
end of 2016. It is expected that the start of 2020 will represent almost 25% increase since 2016. There are plans for a new sports precinct including a multi-purpose centre, senior school playground and oval and a sports storage, ablutions and change rooms. Included in the plans would see a new senior school precinct of steam labs, science lab, art studios and design workshop and a major upgrade for their performing arts centre in the Snowy Shed. As a boarding school also, they would like to strengthen the boarding facilities

and develop a café precinct with indoor and outdoor eating areas, village green and a verandah to enhance their views of Lake Jindabyne. School Principal Dr Andrew Bell said, “In the past, we have had a strong focus on people and programs, which has really underpinned the ethos of the school. It’s really exciting that the school is thriving and now is the right time for us to evolve the school further by strategically mapping out the physical resources of the campus design. This will allow the school to further mature and really optimise the learning experience for our students.” On a tour with Mr Bell on the school campus, it was evident the students have a great learning environment, and outlining the plan there is ample room to expand on their existing land. The school is aware of the region’s master plan, and felt the time

was right to plan for the future chapter of the school. “This is an exciting time for our school community, and for the Snowy Monaro region, as we will be communicating the vision of the impressive construction works plan that will provide for our growing school population and the local community over the coming years,” said Mr Bell. “All of this is designed to take advantage of our wonderful location and to develop our school so that it feels like a place that our students, staff and our community want it to be. It will not have the hard clinical surfaces found in many schools, but will be authentic to our local environment.” At present the master plan is in concept design stage only and is available on their website https://future.smgs.nsw.edu.au/ for viewing.

Lake Foreshore Fun
SUNSHINE and warm temperatures ensure Lake Jindabyne is a focal point in summer where it affords relief from the heat and a great place to spend the day. On a hot summer day the shores will be lined with kids swimming, paddle boarders, water skiers, sailing and boats of all descriptions. While you don’t often associate the mountains with stinking hot weather, it certainly does exist and the best relief if you want to remain outside is to take the plunge for refreshing swim. During the height of summer the lake would have gradually warmed from the snow melt, although with a big snowstorm at the start of December, the rivers will feed cool water early in the season. There are many vantage points for all water activity including great areas for kids to swim and play. The Claypits area at the bottom of the Barry Way roundabout is the easiest, most accessible and most suited for kids. As you drive in the area immediately in front to the right is perfect for the toddlers. Here the water is never very deep due to the gradual gradient of the lake, so ankle deep and knee deep are ideal to get wet and cool down, and easy for the parents to keep an eye on the youngsters.
Plus, there is shade, playground, fitness area and toilet amenities a short walk to the carpark. The main Claypits area you will find water skiers, families and groups with shade tents pitched and set for the day. While it may seem congested and busy at the height of summer, with caution from all groups it is ideal for watercraft. The Lake Jindabyne Sailing Club sail on Wednesday and Saturday evening, so if you see a flotilla of boats, white sail lasers and bigger catamarans, they add colour to the lake horizon and are entertaining. In town, Banjo Paterson Park has a kid’s playground, big park to run around and adjacent to the skate park you can swim. In front of the Lake Jindabyne Hotel is another good beach, just always be cautious of submerged rocks here. Opposite the Thredbo turnoff you will find the boat ramp, newly redesigned last summer plus motor boat hire atthe Discovery Park. Call 6456 2099 to enquire. If you need to keep the kids entertained, canoes, kayaks, paddle boards and sailing boats are all available for hire from Sacred Ride on the actual lake, follow the red pebble road. They have two shops in town or Snowline shop next to shell service station at Thredbo turnoff.

It was humbling to be returned as Member for Monaro at the State Election this year. To have such incredible support around the electorate has been overwhelming. We have achieved so much already and I look forward to achieving a lot more over the remainder of these 4 years. Our region was host to one of the greatest engineering feats of our time. This year marks 70 years of the Snowy Hydro Scheme and I was thrilled to join with the community to celebrate all things Snowy. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet the people who originally worked on the project and hear their unique stories of this incredible accomplishment. I was also fortunate to join with volunteers and organisers of the Apex Children’s Chalet at Smiggin Holes to mark 40 years of helping sick and disadvantaged children. The Magic Castle, as it is also known, enables kids to just be kids in a fun and safe environment. More than 500 volunteers helped build the chalet, and each year volunteers give up countless hours to look after and manage it.

JINDABYNE DINING GUIDE
The Snowy Mountains and Jindabyne are a wellrecognised destination during winter, but the region is quickly becoming a destination of choice for year round activities. We are seeing record investment made and this year I have had the opportunity to announce more funding and plans, and also to open a fair few completed projects. The new boat ramp at Lake Jindabyne is a great addition for boating and fishing enthusiasts. With an upgraded entry road and large parking spaces, the area is now safer for the local community and visitors looking to access the lake. I have been working with the community to identify and progress projects that will help to revitalise the region. In July I announced $5.1 million for a new state of the art airbag training facility for our winter athletes. We are investing $11.8 million in the Jindabyne Shared Trail and $7 million into an education precinct in Jindabyne. The NSW Government is delivering $13 million for upgrades to Jindabyne, Thredbo and Perisher Police Stations and $7 million for the Thredbo Valley Track Extension.

I know the opportunities are endless when it comes to the potential of Jindabyne and the Snowy Mountains, which is why I am committed to seeing a focus on year round tourism, improvement of regional transport connectivity and support of the area as a winter Olympics training base. As we head into the summer season, I hope everybody has the chance to enjoy the alpine region of the Snowy Mountains.

some even sleet at Perisher. The gruelling 170km Race did little to deter young Campbell Jones who led a group of four before pulling away to ride the final 60 kilometres solo. The Oliver’s Real Food Racing Team member was ecstatic as he claimed his first main victory over Jay Vine and Ben Metcalfe. “This is probably my first proper win, so I am pretty happy about it,” said Campbell. In a nice twist, his grandparents Neil and Anne had travelled from Tumbarumba, arriving to hear commentator Dave McKenzie say it looks like Campbell Jones has a clear lead. The female winner Nadine Gill had won a trip to Australia after winning the L’Étape Brazil. Nadine said it had been a tough and lonely ride as she rode from the top of Col de Beloka by herself to outpoint Jessica Pratt and Vicki Whitelaw. Riders also enjoyed riding with L’Étape Australia ambassadors, Amanda Spratt, Esteban Chaves and former cricket captain Steve Waugh, with his foundation now associated with the event.

Fly Fishing Art By Murray Ogilvie and Ant Bentley THERE certainly is something special about fly fishing, and not just the art of catching the fish, but the surroundings in which you ply your craft. After decades of outsmarting the trout in mountain rivers and streams, it is the environment and nature that still has great appeal. You could call it the greatest office of all, one where mother nature talks back. And with such peaceful surroundings it is easy to hear her call. This all bodes well for the stealth that is required to avoid spooking the crafty trout. You too must stalk the river in quiet and not bumble your way along the shore or stamp heavily in the river. This is all part of the fascination of fly fishing, understanding the whole package but most of all being out in remote areas, no one else but you, your selected fly and the art of casting it within reach of your spotted trout. During a half day fish you can easily walk five or six kilometres as you search
the river for unsuspecting fish. Of course, you will also see many more creatures, platypus are common and be sure to keep an eye out for any snakes, yes they do live everywhere. You also must think like the trout, where would they want to feed and what part of the river would they be waiting for their feed to arrive. River navigation and understanding how to read the river and rapids are all part of the equation. Watching for food seams that trout will feast on, where the bugs might hatch, yes, it is more complex than just throwing in a line. Then there is casting to exact positions to entice the fish to your fly. Continued poor casting may spook the fish, and they will be gone. Last summer we offered a free casting clinic, and this summer we have three dates. We would like to help you be more proficient and improve your technique so that you too will enjoy the wonderful surroundings as much as our team do. If you would like to join the clinic just visit the shop to register.

SUMMER fishing is both fun and rewarding, either in the lake or rivers. December sees warm days in the mid 20 degrees, lake surface temperature above 18 degrees and more insect life. Fly fishing in the lake is best late evening until dark and spinning early morning and late evening are best. In the rivers, dry flies all day with perhaps a nymph underneath. Faster runs and pools in the river are best for spinning lures and weighted casting flies. Surface trolling in the lake at sunrise and sunset can produce results with Tassie Devils and perhaps a goldfish pattern hard body lure long. Down rigging and three or four colours of lead line or clip weights in deeper water can be fished all day. In January the weather should warm up further with hot days above 30 degrees and cooler nights. Lake surface temperature can range from 20 - 24 degrees with many more insects hatching. You can fly fish the rivers all day but best results in the evening. Black and brown

Piece by Piece By GINA WOODWARD HOLIDAYS are a great time to get together and do a jigsaw on the dining room table. While many of us see 1000 pieces as challenge enough, that’s not the case for one avid fan, Khancoban’s Anne Tempest. As long as she can recall, Anne has been into jigsaws. After completing some difficult pieces, her kids upped the ante and bought ‘impossibles’ jigsaws with no edges. Next her eldest son sent a jigsaw where you read a book to solve the jigsaw mystery at the same time. From here she well and truly plunged into the weird and wonderful world of jigsaws. Did you know that someone who loves putting together jigsaws is called a Dissectologist? Meet Anne, 64 and retired. Anne then came across giant jigsaws. “I looked it up and I loved it” she said with great enthusiasm. Her first was 12,000 pieces, then she progressed to two at 18,000 pieces each. Not content with this she found a jigsaw online that was 4.5 metres long. Of this giant creation, she says, “You don’t get 24,000 pieces separately - it
comes in 4 bags, 6000 in each bag - you just go through and sort them and get them together. I did that one and it was so pretty.” When asked if she looks for a certain theme or is drawn to particular jigsaws she said, ‘You’ve got no choice, when it’s the biggest jigsaw in the world you can’t find your favourites.” On completing this ‘Life’ jigsaw she had an open house so people could see it. Amongst the 70 visitors was someone who decided it was too pretty to go back in its box. She returned with the Director of Corryong Hospital where it now lives proudly. If you pop in to see it, try to find the piece that’s been put in upside down to date no-one has found it. The next jigsaw was her biggest to date which, when she started, was the largest jigsaw in the world. At 33,600 pieces, the six-metre spectacular called ‘Wildlife’ came to life for Anne as she worked through the sections over three years. At over 100kg, this jigsaw now hangs in the cafeteria at Canberra Zoo. Anne is currently doing a jigsaw collage of brumbies for The Man from Snowy River Festival featuring a silver brumby to celebrate the 50th anniversary. Next, she’ll

Of jigsaws Anne said, “It’s my hobby and I love it. I don’t jigsaw everyday - I just do it when I feel like it. When it’s raining, I call it a jigsaw day, I don’t do housework. I just sit down and jigsaw.”

Vine to Wine
The cool climate wines of Tumbarumba have grown immensely in stature and constantly accumulate accolades and awards. Their cellar doors rate highly for wine, their food and ambience. Obsession Wines, Courabyra Wines, Johansen Wines and Tumbarumba Wines Escapes all have cellar doors while other vineyards presell their crops direct to bigger wine brands. When you visit this summer tasting wine, consider the life of the grape still

on the vine, awaiting to be wine. At Courabyra Wines you overlook the vineyard from the superb cellar door, the new deck area an ideal vantage point to capture the vista. Courabyra have numerous award-winning sparkling wines, their grapes picked in March each year at a beaume of 11 (sugar content and ripeness). Owner Cathy Gairn saying they also choose to pick on the flavour profile. The fruit is hand-picked and then whole bunch pressed in Canberra. The three varieties are barrel fermented individually. The wine is blended and bottled, then the yeast added for the secondary fermentation in bottle. They are left on tirage for a minimum period of 3.5 years and up to 10 years depending on the end product and branding. Once they reach their respective time they are then disgorged and the dosage added, and the cork and cage are applied. Courabyra have two vintage 805 sparkling’s a Brut and a Rose, both are cuvee wines and two non-vintage sparkling’s, Brut and a Rose. “We leave the sparkling on cork for a minimum time of three months before sale. This summer we will also have

our new release of a Frizzante sparkling in January 2020, said Cathy. Obsession Wines owner and wine maker Adrian Brayne makes his wine on site at their winery. For his red wine, the grapes are picked by hand, the stems removed before they are placed into large open fermenters. Here they are held cold for five days and stomped to extract the true flavours of the fruit. You may have seen Catriona Rowntree on Getaway stomping in the fermenter. They are then left to ferment for a further ten days with a mixture of stomping and gently pumping over the wine. It is then pressed in a basket press
to softly extract the wine. During that stomping process the sugar turns into alcohol using wild yeast that forms on the bunches. They are one of the only wineries who use natural yeast. Once pressed as wine it will mature for up to 18 months in French oak barrels on site. “We are growing things organically and we are trying to make the wines as natural as possible without chemical intervention. Some wine is held back in the bottle before selling, we have some five years old waiting to release to customers. Certain products are held back as we would rather do the cellaring, so they are ready to drink, said Adrian.

Rail Trail Open in April By GINA WOODWARD HITTING the rails takes on new meaning in 2020 with the opening of the long awaited Tumbarumba to Rosewood Rail Trail on Friday 3 April. This will be the first rail trail to open in NSW and in doing so becomes a test case for rail trail projects statewide. Old railway lines in towns around the world have been converted into tourist attractions, with great popularity in New Zealand, North East Victoria, South Australia and beyond. They bring life to towns and businesses along the way including ice cream shops, accommodation and of course, bike shuttle services and bike hire. A fantastic way to ride, especially as a family, rail trails are gaining popularity as we all know they can’t be too steep given trains once hit these rails too. This trail is noted as having a flat to slight incline and is best ridden in spring, summer and autumn. It is proposed to become part of a larger trail network of 160km in length known as the Riverina Highland Rail Trails, including Tumut to Batlow (32km) and Wagga Wagga to Ladysmith (21km). Currently under construction, the trail
will cover 22km from Tumbarumba to Rosewood. With multi-purpose town trails, mountain bike tracks and the pump track in town, this becomes a headline act for cycling in a region famous for gold mining history. The original Main South Line went from Wagga Wagga through Tarcutta to Tumbarumba at 800m above sea level. It opened in stages from 1917 - 1921 and ceased operations beyond Ladysmith in 1974 after significant flooding. The Ladysmith Station is now maintained by the Tumba Rail historical group. Tumbarumba’s reputation for wine, cider, festivals and cycling continues to grow and according to Member for Albury, Justin Clancy, “This is the beginning of an exciting new opportunity for the region, for business owners, tourism operators and the hospitality sector - a real boost for economic growth.” It takes many people to get these projects over the line and to obtain funding, in this case $5million. The efforts of Tumbarumba Rail Trail Group, Tumbarumba Historical Society, Men’s Shed and other community members have not gone unnoticed in this process. Feasibility studies continue into the proposed Monaro Rail Trail project. The

plan is on public exhibition and comment is welcome for this currently disused rail corridor. The ride would link the Canberra Valley, through Michelago, Cooma and Nimmitabel across the Great Dividing Range, to Bombala. It would feature heritage listed bridges and stations, a 160m tunnel, and a wonderful pastoral story celebrating the heritage of the region as it passes through unique rural landscapes. This project has been likened to the
150km Otago Central Rail Trail in New Zealand. Originally a project that raised eyebrows around potential benefits when it opened in 2000, the surprise has been the positive impact on the community, particularly the small towns that have not only survived but thrived. With more than 15,000 users completing the entire trail each year, according to Mayor Tim Cadogan it’s now the vein of gold that runs through the district.

Rodeo History THE beauty of history is in the future when you can reflect on prior times, and more so, allow those who did not experience that era an insight into how it was. In the newly released book, The History of the Tumbarumba Rodeo, you too can read about the fascinating times of the past 75 years. These years also established the
Tumbarumba Rodeo as the longest running rodeo in NSW, and third oldest in Australia. Don’t be surprised this New Year’s Day to see those who attend the annual rodeo sneaking a read in between bull and broncs bucking off their respective riders. After all, this is what the book is all about, the feats of those that came before the current crop of talented riders. Riders in 2020 will create their own history. The book looks at each decade all the way back to the 1940’s. A time when Harold Fredricks, Ossie Cottam Snr. and Matt Bradley had an idea which lead to establishing the rodeo. The rest they say is history. In the 1950’s a committee of up to 250 people helped run the big rodeos. A real perk for volunteers was they could purchase a five-ounce glass from the Tumbarumba Rodeo Club for six pence, which could be carried in their top pocket and filled up with beer all day free of charge.
◼◼
STYLE: Tim Hammond on a bronc in 2018. PHOTO: Steve Cuff
The Tumbarumba Rodeo Club had a string of about 40 bucking horses in the 50’s, which grew to over 80 horses by the 1960s. Each year the brumbies were rounded up at McPhersons Plains and used in the novice events. This was a very social event with many thrills and spills. The committee still have a string of horses today. In 1975 Jim McGuire won the bareback, bull ride, bulldogging and roping events. Jim also came second in the saddle bronc, giving him an almost perfect score. This was an outstanding record which has not been matched since. The rodeo always had a feature bull. Bulls like “Pound Creek Roarer” owned by Billy Goldspink and “Icecream” owned by Charlie Wombey, who was ridden for the first time in many years by Jim McGuire for $20 prize money. These are just a few of the excerpts plus there are fascinating photos of each decade, a period where cameras were not so common.

MAJESTIC: Relax with stunning Lake Jindabyne views in this stunning property.
Alpine Lake Views
BUYERS looking for a stylish architectural home in a quiet neighbourhood with stunning views of Lake Jindabyne may need to act fast on this superb $1.2 million Alpine Sands property. Designed by renowned architects Henry and Kate Lance and offering magnificent and expansive lake and mountain views, this executive home has everything the aspiring home owner could desire. Situated on a large 1,528sm allotment, the four-bedroom, two bathroom home is a split-level design with the entry on the mid-level with an internal access double garage and a media room which could be a fifth bedroom. On the upper floor the open plan living area has a superbly appointed light filled kitchen with island bench plus lounge area and dining with magnificent views to the lake. It includes reverse cycle air conditioning, gas heating, bamboo flooring and a double glazed 4-panel sliding glass door to the large external timer deck. This level also hosts a large master bedroom with carpet flooring, built-in robes, ensuite with shower, underfloor heating and accesses to same outside deck. All windows are double glazed with most
having double roll-a-blinds with blockout for privacy and sheer sunscreen for a see-through option. The lower level includes three bedrooms all with electric convection heaters, carpet floor coverings, built in robes and all offering views to a covered timber deck. This level also has a bathroom with shower, toilet, bath and underfloor heating. The property comes complete with four security camera’s and a monitor while hard wired Foxtel is available in both the lounge and media rooms.
