The First Word AUTUMN, the season of changing colour, the end of summer and the anticipation of winter. What a great time of year in the Snowy Mountains and so many choices of where to visit and what to see. With cooler temperatures it is the perfect time to explore the mountains, and in this edition we have offered many ideas to start you on your snowy adventures. Be sure to peruse the calendar as once again it is stocked full of great events from food and wine festivals, a host of agricultural shows in March, always a great day out for the kids. There is colour in every form during autumn and the Cooma Multicultural event pictured, you will see a swirl of colour on Sunday March 17. Of course, all the Easter events are a huge attraction and combined with school holidays it is the perfect time to sneak the family away to the mountains. Thredbo have their $10,000 golden egg hunt that could line your pockets with more than chocolate eggs, and the Jindabyne Lake

Light Sculpture across four days of Easter is a must visit. Everyone loves an Easter Fair, and we have two of the best on Easter Saturday. You can visit either Adaminaby or Berridale, both are highly entertaining and the whole family will have a great time. Tumut’s Festival of the Falling Leaf with their street parade and fireworks on April 27 is an entertaining day and the Batlow CiderFest in May is one huge street party. We know there are a plethora of travel ideas or even day trips, so if you have time jump in the car and visit Yarrangobilly Caves, or the Tumbarumba wineries, or purely for the scenic drive. There are numerous options. Naturally the alpine region of Australia presents another whole new world of exploring on the Main Range. Climb Mt Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest mountain, visit secluded alpine lakes or just relax and admire wonderful scenery. There are also exciting times ahead here in the Snowy Mountains. The Snowy

COLOUR: Autumn is the time of changing colour and it comes in all forms here in the mountains. The Cooma Multicultural Festival offers its own take on autumn. Heritage Centre has been granted funding for planning so we look forward to updated news as it progresses. The massive Snowy 2.0 project is rolling along with exploratory works approved. This new project always brings the mighty Snowy Scheme back into the conversation and no matter where you travel you will see the scheme in some part. From dams and rivers, it is all interlinked and you can learn and see more about it at the Cooma Discovery Centre or a visit to the Adaminaby Snowy Scheme Museum is

enlightening on how the project was built. So we hope that gives a quick insight into what you can do and see this autumn, and encourages you to visit this iconic region, but there is so much more….. Enjoy, and don’t forget you can read ongoing updates on our website for in between editions at snowymagazine.com.au.

Tourism Snowy Mountains back on board TOURISM across the Snowy Mountains is a huge part the region’s economy and it is important to have a tourism body that is both active and supported. During recent years Tourism Snowy Mountains (TSM) has been somewhat restricted in how it operated. The council mergers to form Snowy Monaro Regional Council and Snowy Valleys Council did not help and the NSW Government changed Regional Tourism Organisations (RTO) boundaries and introduced Destination Southern NSW which oversees a larger region of which TSM is now part of. If you thought TSM was in limbo, that was a correct assumption, although there was still work happening behind the scenes. Chairman of TSM Wayne Kirkpatrick said that even though they were in no man’s land the last two years for the RTO review, Destination NSW still joined with TSM and supported their $200,000 summer autumn campaign. TSM funded their $100,000 half portion through cash reserves to continue with their successful campaign. But more importantly it showed DNSW had faith in TSM and its operators. It should also be pointed out that other

big name RTO’s such as Hunter Valley, Blue Mountains and Outback do not exist in the same capacity as TSM still does. In late 2018 Tourism Snowy Mountains rebounded back bigger and stronger than ever. They have elected new highly qualified members to the board who are all diverse in their own talent and all the big players in the region are now fully supportive of TSM. Snowy Monaro Regional Council, Perisher Resort, Thredbo Resort, Snowy Hydro, Lake Crackenback Resort, the Blyton Group and NPWS are all contributors with each holding a position on the board. “I think it is significant, firstly the members of TSM voted unanimously to support expansion of the board to include all of the major stakeholders,” said Chairman Wayne Kirkpatrick. “Everybody is there with the capacity to contribute financially and intellectually and there is harmony and a shared vision. We have the opportunity to really do some good things now. “The Snowy Mountains brand has a lot of investment and that’s why it has to continue to be up there in headlights. By having the resorts and the National Parks around the table where most of the assets

and tourist attractions exist is a very good thing. It is a powerful group and it’s a very co-operative group.” In the recent TSM newsletter they advised that peak summer visitation period of Christmas, New Year and holiday season of January had been strong. Thredbo reports +15% growth year on year of visitors using the Kosciusko Express chairlift and riding the Thredbo Valley Track and NPWS reports that visitors to the Snowy Region Visitor Centre in Jindabyne is up +20% year on year. TSM has once more been working with Destination NSW planning a continuation of the Summer/Autumn campaign theme, “So Much More”. This time, each party will contribute $110,000 (incl GST) to mount a $220,000 digital based campaign using DNSW and TSM websites in conjunction with accommodation platform Wotif this year. That will no doubt show more consistent results but what they really need is more funds to compete with the big budgets of other major tourist regions. Trying to compete with the Gold Coast for example, where they have a marketing budget of $13 million is heavy competition. They receive a dollar for

every visitor and have 13 million visitors per year. TSM’s $220,000 total does not compare, although to be fair the snow resorts do heavily promote the region for winter, plus Thredbo for summer. But still, having extra tourism funds would be beneficial. “We are aware of other regions in strong destinations with big budgets and that is through a combination of government grants and some form of tourism levy, neither of which we have in the Snowy Mountains. We are behind the eight ball and we are examining an extent to a way it could be possible.” Every region is chasing the tourism dollar and considering our resources here, we compete strongly against stiff opposition. Snowy Mountains have 1.5 million visitors per year. One dollar per head would be welcomed funds indeed. If your business would like to join Tourism Snowy Mountains they can email tsm@snowymountains.com.au or visit the website for more information. The Snowy Mountains website (SnowyMountains.com.au) has great information for holiday ideas and information on all towns, plus you can follow their social media page at Facebook.com/SnowyMountains.

Hibernation over for Bears AFTER a lengthy time on the sidelines, the Snowy River Bears rugby league team will make an historic return from hibernation in 2019 having re-joined group 16 rugby league. The bears exited the competition in 2004 and were thought extinct, but with the grit and determination that many former players showed and the drive of President Gavin Patton they will debut in the competition on the first weekend in April against Merimbula. The club will field two teams, first grade and second grade with Gavin Patton saying it has been hard, but they have been getting stuff done. “The committee has been sensational, but we need more committee people. General support has been good, but we have not really been seen yet,” said Patton. They are running on a limited budget but they hope to attract more sponsors as the season progresses with an eye to the following year to really hit their straps. The teams have been training under the

guidance of coach Adam Walters from Dalgety, who has a wealth of experience and was a local junior. There will be upcoming trial games leading into the season and you can stay tuned on all the updates via their Facebook page, Snowy River Bears Rugby League Football Club Inc. Since they announced their comeback there has been a hive of activity with people resurrecting old photos from previous generations. The club last won a premiership in 1996 defeating the Eden Tigers 18-0.

HISTORY: The bears celebrate group 16 victory in 1996.

The Good Samaritan By Steve Cuff WHEN it comes to supporting his home town, Cameron McKid, licensee at Jindabyne’s Banjo Paterson Inn is the first to step up to the plate. Having operated the pub now for eight years Cameron has seen not only the town grow, but also his establishment prosper and they could well be on the same parallels. As much as he is considered generous, he also understands it is good business to help support the community, and more so the events on the local calendar. You name the event and the Banjo has most likely been involved with it. “The town and pub are both going forward, and I just wanted to give a little bit back,” said Cameron modestly. Sitting in the Overflow Bar talking about Jindabyne as a town, and how he has an obligation to staff to keep them employed you can sense his concern. The Banjo is one of the bigger employers with 35 permanent and up to 70 staff during winter. When he first arrived to oversee the Banjo there were dips in the calendar, especially after winter. “In the first few years from end of season to December we would limp towards

Christmas, then the wheels would come off in busy times when you needed extra casuals. Now the constant visitation has ensured full time jobs and we have very few down times.” As he rattles off a list of events and groups the Banjo supports it is impressive to say the least. The local community should be grateful they have such a solid supporter. “I look at it as good public relations, and good for the town, if someone doesn’t step up and we lose things that is not ideal. Having said that, most businesses in this town are pretty generous.” At the recent Australian water skiing championships Snowy Mountains Magazine were fortunate to present prizes to the winners with Cameron. The Banjo is one of the events biggest sponsors and they returned favour with holding their presentations at the Banjo every evening. Let’s just say the place was packed, so he understands it is good business as well. As the Snowy River Bears rugby league team garner support for their historic comeback the Banjo Paterson Inn will be one of ther major sponsors. The Jindabyne Fishing Club also run their weekly Friday night raffles in the bars with the backing of Cameron. He mentions that while he supports groups like the fishing

club and others, these organisations are also very supportive of the local community. The fishing club often donating money to good causes as one example. And as their jingle goes, the beers are better at the Banjo which is one reason why it is always busy plus they have Kosciuszko Pale Ale on tap straight from the vat. The locals like the establishment, the tourists like the Kosi beer, they have great food in their restaurants, Clancy’s Brasserie being one of the busiest eateries in Jindabyne. Plus, Jindabyne town folk appreciate when businesses give back to the community and they show their support.

Snowy 2.0 Exploratory Approval By Steve Cuff WHILE Snowy Hydro await final shareholder approval from the Federal Government for their massive $4.5 billion Snowy 2.0 project, the company welcomed the recent news by the NSW Government who have granted planning approval for the exploratory works. Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro and Minister for Planning Anthony Roberts announced the approval in February following a rigorous environmental and planning assessment process. “Snowy Hydro is an iconic Australian success story, part of the fabric or our nation and of the community here in the Snowy Mountains,” Mr Barilaro said at the announcement. Snowy Hydro CEO Paul Broad said NSW Government’s support for Snowy 2.0 is critical for the security, affordability and reliability of the National Electricity Market (NEM) in the future. “The mighty Snowy Scheme keeps the lights on across the National Electricity Market at times of peak demand today, and Snowy 2.0 will build on our existing capabilities,” said Mr Broad. Mr broad also said Snowy Hydro takes its environmental responsibility very seriously. “We have a long and proven record of responsibly operating the Snowy Scheme within the national park and we will do everything possible to avoid or minimise impacts from construction of Snowy 2.0.” Snowy Hydro will provide $10.5 million to offset any impacts from the exploratory works with Minister for Planning Anthony Roberts stating approval of the project was subject to strict conditions to address

concerns about impacts on Kosciuszko National Park. The NSW Government which is responsible for allocating the offsets, has made the commitment that Snowy 2.0 offsets will be used by National Parks and Wildlife Service to support local environmental and recreational activities in Kosciuszko National Park. Exploratory works involve excavating an exploratory tunnel to gain a greater understanding of the underground geological conditions at the proposed location of Snowy 2.0 underground power station near Lobs Hole in northern Kosciuszko National Park. The work also includes upgrades and establishment of access roads, establishment of a construction compound and supporting infrastructure. Similar exploratory tunnels were constructed almost 50 years ago for Tumut 1 and Tumut 2 power stations, the two underground stations in the Snowy Scheme.

An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Snowy 2.0 main works will be submitted to the NSW Government later in 2019. This will involve the construction of the underground power station with a generating capacity of 2000 megawatts and approximately 27km of power waterways linking the existing Tantangara and Talbingo Reservoirs. The Snowy 2.0 main works EIS will be publicly exhibited to provide community with an opportunity to comment. In December the independent Board of Snowy Hydro Limited approved a final investment decision to proceed with Snowy 2.0, subject to shareholder approval. Snowy Hydro said that after almost two years of rigorous due diligence on every aspect of the project, including detailed financial analysis and ongoing geotechnical drilling, the Board is confident Snowy 2.0 is a strong investment for the Company.

Rainbow Lake.

Picnic in A free Porcupine Track app can be downloaded from the NSW National Parks website, to keep the kids entertained along the way, and you will feel like you are on a true adventure.

◼ WITH no shortage of stunning scenery and wildlife throughout the Snowy Mountains, finding scenic and secluded picnic spots away from the main tourist trail is a great way to explore the region during the autumn months. Dotted around the mountains and waterways, many of the best spots can only be accessed on foot, so here is our pick of some of the best across the whole region. There are no set specific picnic locations, so spread the blanket and picnic basket wherever you desire. RAINBOW LAKE TRAIL Located in the Kosciuszko National Park on the road to Perisher Valley, this

is a gentle one hour return walk. The trail passes through rolling hills, a snow gum forest, and alpine grasslands, leading to the picturesque and historic Rainbow Lake. A day at the Show PACK the kids into the car this autumn for a day trip to a country show where there is guaranteed entertainment and fun for all. Best of all you don’t need any devices to keep them entertained, unless of course you are adding to your Instagram and social media feed where there will be ample photo opportunities. Agricultural shows have been scheduled for hundreds of years and are a great gathering of the community’s yearly highlights. Sheep and cattle are judged for their wool quality or stature and appearance, the dog sheep trials are highly engaging as skilful kelpies attempt to please their master as they organise stubborn sheep in a time efficient manner. Who can resist the temptation of award

DETAIL: You will notice bridge plates advising where you are.

Ride from Thredbo to Jindabyne via the TVT Later this autumn the Thredbo Valley Track will be extended to Jindabyne when the lower TVT section is complete making for one epic ride. Craig Trevallion gives us an insight into the two different sections of the track. SINCE its inception the Thredbo Valley Track (TVT) has become the signature cross country mountain bike trail in the Snowy Mountains and riders have been salivating in anticipation of a complete TVT. From later autumn the track will be ridable from Thredbo all the way to Jindabyne. If you include the lift accessed gravity trails within the Thredbo Resort, and the Hatchery Bay track on the shores of Lake Jindabyne, a unique and captivating 60km of purpose built track can be ridden from the high point at an altitude of 1930 metres to the base at 960 metres in Jindabyne. At its full length alone, the TVT track at 43km to Jindabyne is a big full day outing for any rider, but the beauty is there are various options for tackling a selected part of the track making it easily divided across two days of fun. The track itself is effectively split into

two halves known as the Upper and Lower TVT and despite the elevation drop, the track is not all downhill. There are short pinches and tight twisting climbs mixed amongst the exhilarating and flowing descents. Starting out at the edge of Thredbo Village, the 20km upper TVT meanders down the valley with various track surfaces and terrain featured. Most of the journey is on a natural ground base with all the associated contours, protruding rocks and tree roots, whilst some areas are smoother with a coating of hard packed gravel. A key feature of the upper TVT are the five crossings of the Thredbo River via three large suspension bridges and two archway bridges spanning the crystal clear sub alpine river. Along with the views enjoyed at the bridge crossings, many different points along the track provide expansive views up and down the valley, to

the river below and high up to the towering ridgeline of the Ramshead Range. The adventure snakes its way through towering valley Snow Gums, many of which were burnt in the severe bushfires of 2003 and now stand as a ghostly and stark reminder of that summer. In contrast, the natural regeneration since that time is a lush greenery which borders much of the track and tempers the summer sun. The track passes through both the Ngarigo and Thredbo Diggings camp grounds which are perfect places for a rest by the river. Both camp grounds have

toilet facilities but no fresh water supply. Be sure to have enough water, refreshments and equipment needed for the full time you expect to be in the outdoors. If you don’t think you have enough with you before starting, there are several options to stock up in the village shops in Thredbo. The upper TVT is suitable for most riders. It has, however, become a common misconception that the track is “all downhill”. It isn’t. The shape of the gradient is better described as a track that “undulates down”. Some fitness and mountain biking experience are required.

FLOW: There are many sections to ride alongside the Thredbo River.

LOWER TVT The Lake Crackenback Resort and Spa is nestled in Thredbo Valley adjacent to the unofficial frontier between the upper and lower TVT. If you’re out for the full ride, the resort can be a perfect half way break for lunch or refreshments. Those setting off just for the 17km lower TVT will find the resort to be an ideal staging post before heading to Bullocks Flat and the Skitube (train) bridge across the Thredbo River for the start of the track. After crossing the Skitube bridge it isn’t long before the difference in design and terrain to the upper TVT becomes apparent. The track is tighter and more undulating, and you get a greater sense of being immersed in the dense surrounding bushland. Spectacular views of the Thredbo River are on offer from points both close to the water’s edge and from high vistas as the track ventures up and down the valley wall. Keep an eye out for unique chairs and benches sculpted out of logs by the track builders which give a comfortable place to sit, rest and soak up the view and surrounds. Beyond the three kilometre point downstream the track becomes distinctly more technical after sequences of rock armouring which raises the technical bar

a few notches. Some intermediate riding skills at least and experience are required to safely negotiate the remainder of the track. More technical features become somewhat regular and the track is tighter and steeper in sections and the climbs give way to flowing descents and corners often blessed with banked berms to increase the fun. Towering trees, ground cover shrubberies and rocky outcrops border closely against each side of the track. Although heading down the valley, the lay of the land isn’t all easy going. The lower TVT gives a sense of remoteness as it runs entirely on the north western side of the Thredbo River. You should factor that there are no access or exit points other than the start or the finish of the track which is a consideration when it comes to emergency situations, injury, fatigue or a bike mechanical issue. At the end your exit point will be over the Thredbo River via a new bridge at the Gaden Trout Hatchery near the picnic area. From here you ride towards Kosciuszko Road and cross over road to merge into the meandering beauty of the lakeside Hatchery Bay trail. (Note the new bridge will be installed in later autumn) A further 7km ride along the edge of Lake Jindabyne and you will arrive in Banjo Paterson Park in the centre of Jindabyne. It’s important to note the track is two

way and for shared use for bikes and walkers. Always ride in anticipation of traffic coming in the opposite direction and walkers being out to enjoy the track as well. During the following 2019/20 summer a new section of the TVT will be extended 7km uphill from Thredbo to Dead Horse Gap. Once fully complete the track also has potential to be awarded Epic status by the International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA). Tackling the full length of the TVT in one ride is a stout outing, even for experienced riders. Breaking the journey up into stages across different days or different visits to the area is an option that will suit many people.

TECHNICAL: The lower TVT requires more riding skill.

EBikes growing community By Craig Trevallion WITH the inception and development of pedal assisted bikes, or Ebikes as they’re known, the cycling industry has added a rather large new string to its bow. In laymen’s terms, an Ebike provides some powered assistance to a rider during their pedalling motion via a battery powered internal motor. The assistance reduces the physical input required to get and keep the bike in motion. Encompassing a wide range of cycling disciplines, the Ebikes are available in road, mountain, touring and commuting bikes to name a few. With change comes opinion, which is often divided. Gradually the education of the cycling and broader community appears to be minimising the divide in opinions and will likely see Ebikes take their place alongside their traditional cousins in almost every cycling scenario. There appears to be one place of common ground and that is, if Ebikes get people on bikes and afford the opportunity to venture outdoors then that is a bonus. The inability at a certain point in

life to be able to ride a conventional bike encompasses a broad part of the community. It may be age, injury, rehabilitation, ill health or other reasons so if more people are getting out and pedalling that benefits their own mind and overall community. Aside from the literal physical health benefits, the knock-on effects are far reaching. If people are choosing a healthier lifestyle, can experience the outdoors, have social inclusion, improve their mental health, see and go places they may not have done, and all the while in an environmentally friendly manner, Ebikes will continue to grow. In an inspiring and touching example of such a scenario, local Jindabyne rider, Sarah James, can speak from personal experience. Sarah suffers from Cystic Fibrosis, a degenerative lung condition which she has endured since birth. Although proportionally fit and active in her own right, Sarah’s condition severely restricts her level of physical activity, and those restrictions are continually growing. One of Sarah’s great loves is being in

ACHIEVEMENT: Cascades Hut and Sarah at the hut and getting wet feet.

the outdoors and particularly mountain biking. Although having lived in the Snowy Mountains for several years, Sarah had not enjoyed the opportunity to ride to the iconic mountain destination of Cascades Hut. Being set in the back country of the Kosciuszko National Park near Dead Horse Gap, mountain biking to Cascades Hut is a challenging ask for even an experienced fit rider. “I had never been to Cascades Hut and without the Ebike I never would,” said Sarah. When speaking of the mountain bike ride Sarah smiles and glows with pride and satisfaction reminiscing about the outing. She laughs when recounting a

back-country creek crossing that ended with wet feet and in summing up the experience Sarah describes the day as “emotional”. A strong determination to live life to the fullest combined with the technology of an Ebike enabled a keen and inspiring mountain biker to fulfil a dream despite her degenerative condition. Sarah described the journey and experience with the brightest of smiles by saying, “It was one of the best days of my life”. Proof enough that Ebikes must be a good thing. You can hire or purchase Ebikes from local Snowy Mountains region bike shops and explore for yourself.

L’Étape returns in 2019 CYCLISTS have welcomed the news that the L’Étape Australia cycling race will again be held in Jindabyne in 2019. Prior to the 2018 event the announcement was made by Deputy Premier John Barilaro, and after such a successful recent event, L’Étape Australia has found its best route options and village base at Banjo Paterson Park. Snowy Mountains Magazine spoke to numerous riders after the race who all highly praised the location in the centre of Jindabyne, and the optional riding distances. Race organiser Simon Baggs said he was absolutely thrilled with the outcome of the 2018 race which was held under perfect conditions. “The best thing of all is seeing all these men and women come across the line, look on their face of sheer exhaustion and euphoria, that makes everything we do to put this event together worthwhile,” said Mr Baggs. The L’Étape Australia is still relatively young as far as events go, and in its three year history the event has always attracted a strong attendance of approximately 3000 participants. Organisers anticipate a much bigger field in 2019. “I am hoping that after the success

of 2018 we could add another thousand riders, that would be sensational. There is 50% of the riders here today (2018) that haven’t ridden before, so they will bring others.” One entrant Michael said he had attended each of the three years. “The whole logistics was so much easier and a different vibe in the village than other years.” He said his group were staying in Jindabyne and they just rode their bike to the start. The race really does have the feel of a stage of the Tour de France with numerous riders applauding residents who each year wave and cheer them on from their property gates and as they rode throughout the course. Race director Florent Malezieuz was challenged before the race to ride the course himself, and true to his word he returned in January to experience the full course and to understand the course from a rider’s perspective. “You have to know the racecourse because then you know Beloka is coming. It is brutal, you can’t be ready for it, you know that it is going to be brutal and you are always surprised by it. I managed to ride it all the way up. I now know how they feel,” said Florent.

NEW: The Easy Street was an addition to the trail network this summer.

Gravity goes downhill THREDBO’S Mountain Bike Park has been developing in leaps and bounds, so it is no coincidence that mountain bike riders from across the nation have turned up in droves, each anxious to ride the latest addition or to experience what gravity riding is about. Add in the biggest mountain bike events in Australia, including the legendary Cannonball in December and the Super Enduro and you have everything a rider could possible need. Danny Taliana from Thredbo MTB said that people who are riding cross country on their own home trails are now realising they can also ride gravity. “They are coming from their local areas and can really relate to riding Thredbo Resort,” said Danny. “I think things are changing now so

with the capability of an all mountain bike, yeah, we will see a lot of riders riding that longer travel bike. They are a lot lighter and a lot more efficient, so those types of riders and bikes are well suited to the Thredbo Mountain Bike Park.” From a rider perspective World Cup racer and Thredbo ambassador Tegan Molloy said it certainly has developed a lot and now caters for a wider range of riders. “When I first started there was only one trail, now we have four and a wide variety as well. We have the downhill, the flow, easy street, the new beginner trail and then expanding on that you have the TVT and the all mountain trail.” Riders expectations have also grown with Tim Windshuttle from Thredbo MTB saying it’s been a huge increase on

last summer for lessons. Adult lessons are now sought after for riders wanting to progress to the next level of trail and especially for those who have not ridden the chairlift trails before. “We are doing six to eight lessons per day on offer through the holiday period, the new kids’ junior skills session have been going really well for us,” said Tim. “Having a lesson is a good starting point for anyone who wants to have a crack at gravity riding in Thredbo. Having the three core gravity trails here you can really progress by going up with an instructor and making that move from the Kosciuszko Flow to the Cannonball Downhill.” You can find out more on Thredbo mountain biking by visiting www.thredbo.com.au

Traditional Alpine Lodge in the heart of Thredbo

Over 500 school students across Australia will take over Thredbo on March 14-17 to compete in the Australian Mountain Biking Interschools. This event continues to grow much like its winter compatriot, Snowsports Interschools, but here entrants will use their bikes to compete in a variety of disciplines including cross country, downhill, flow, pump track and an exciting XC team relay. The Interschools give all students the special chance to experience mountain biking and the enthusiasm and energy of this rapidly growing sport in a competitive, educational and supportive atmosphere. The event will be an action packed four days with Thredbo providing the perfect environment for all skill levels to participate, compete and spark interest in competitive biking in the younger generation. Students interested in registering and competing in this year’s Australian MTB Interschools Championships can find more information at thredbo.com. au/events.

SUMMIT: The feeling of being on top of Australia.

Australia’s highest mountain CLIMBING Mt Kosciuszko is a ritual for most Snowy Mountains visitors, and with access rather simple, you too can climb to the top of Australia. The easiest way to the summit is to start with the scenic chairlift ride at Thredbo. Simply purchase a ticket at Thredbo Sports ticket office and ride to the top and Australia’s highest restaurant, Eagles Nest. The ride is spectacular and be sure to stop at the lookout platform at the top of the chair and absorb the views of Thredbo Village. From here it is a 6.5km hike each way to the top and allow about four hours round trip, depending on how fast you walk and how many stops you may have. Make sure you pack an extra layer, plenty of water and food as you are isolated once you leave the top of Thredbo. The temperatures and wind can be drastically different to Thredbo Village, and even the top of Thredbo, so

you need to be prepared for all weather. It is also advisable to check the daily weather report just to be sure. Following the elevated metal walking platform trail allows for easy navigating as you pass via the Kosciuszko lookout, Rawson Pass and then onto the summit of Australia. Rawson Pass is Australia’s highest “bathroom” so do take the opportunity to adjust to this altitude if the desire is there, as there are no other facilities higher up. The views from the top are superb, and on a nice day you can sit and enjoy lunch on the roof of Australia and be in awe of the 360 degree surroundings. In the distance you can see mountains in Victoria to the south and portions of the Main Range track as it weaves its way north into adjacent valleys. On top of the mountain is a cairn, a rock pillar that many like to climb just to elevate themselves that much higher

for the obligatory photo to show your friends you have conquered Kosi. The return trip is just as scenic as you venture back to the Thredbo chairlift. Just ensure you allow enough time before the chair closes or you will have a further walk down Thredbo mountain. The chairlift ride back down to the valley floor is enthralling to cap of your round trip to Australia’s highest peak. During Easter and school holidays it is highly advisable to arrive at the chairlift for first rides as it is one of the busiest times of the year for summiting. An alternative route is from the lookout at Charlotte Pass where you can follow the Summit Road for 9km. This walk is much longer and has vastly different scenery. One advantage is you will encounter Seaman’s Hutt just before Rawson Pass. For this option you would park the car at the lookout and allow yourself extra time for the 18km round trip.

WITH its quaint European style village and Australia’s biggest vertical, Thredbo certainly has many pluses for snow visitors. It seems most people agreed as they were bestowed with several top accolades in 2018. Thredbo won Australia’s Best Ski Resort at the World Ski Awards for the second year running reinforcing that it is Australia’s top alpine resort. Thredbo also took out the ‘Best Australian Ski Resort’ at the Snowsports Industries of Australia awards held in Canberra. The Snowsports Industries of Australia Awards are voted on by wholesalers, importers, manufacturers, retailers, rental businesses, other trade buyers and media. On top of these, Thredbo took home the gold as the ‘Best Australian Ski Resort for Families’ at the Best of Family Travel Awards with more than 120,000 unique votes across a variety of 70 categories covering everything to do with family travel. Winter 2019 is just around the corner and Thredbo is readying itself for what will be another massive season. From unrivalled events and après calendar to their highly acclaimed snow sports school, family activities and more, it’s set to be another great winter.

Council has been working on a Destination Management Plan and a Planning and Land Use Draft Discussion Papers, plus the NSW State Government initiated funds for the Go Jindabyne 2036 Masterplan. The Destination Management Plan had community sessions in Cooma in late 2018 to gauge feedback and prior to Christmas the Go Jindabyne 2036 Masterplan was also started with community consolations. All of these will have some effect on our future and key decisions that come out of these plans will affect our future tourism. TRC Tourism, a Snowy Mountains based business was commissioned for the council Destination Management Plan. The business headed up by Janet Mackay have a wealth of experience in many alpine and tourist regions. You can now view both the Destination Management Plan and the Planning and Land Use Draft Discussion Papers on the Your Say Snowy Monaro website. All information is on the website for a limited time where you can submit feedback. www.yoursaysnowymonaro.com.au The Go Jindabyne 2036 Masterplan recently had an update for businesses at the Jindabyne Connect meeting in January. Lee Shearer, who heads up the masterplan gave an insight into what they have been doing since December. This included hosting a number of

other satellite towns so they could get an overall perspective of Jindabyne’s neighbours. “It is important we understand from their perspective what they see, and it was interesting that Cooma really featured, and people wanted to know why Cooma had not been part of any overall Jindabyne masterplan,” said Ms Shearer. Ms Shearer said that her brief was the Jindabyne 2036 Masterplan. “What I do know it is very apparent to me is that Jindabyne is struggling because of the growth, Jindabyne is struggling for many many years, it has been delivered in an ad hoc way. “The problem for Jindabyne is here and now and if we continue on the journey of the past we are just

future and will be engaging several consultants, housing specialists, urban designers and government architect who will team together to deliver the masterplan. “There a lot of great ideas and we want to list those ideas and people to buy in on the ideas and give them support or otherwise.” Some topics that have been discussed include CBD town planning, the ever growing Jindabyne Central School, aged care facilities and looking at how the lake foreshore can be more of a focus for the warmer months and possible lake foreshore developments. They admit it may seem as if it has gone quiet, but they will be back in April with further updates and another big round of consultation.

Creative treasure By Steve Cuff STROLLING along the Lake Jindabyne Foreshore for the Easter Lake Light Sculpture can easily distract your mind as scenery and splendour of artwork have you in awe. This year pause for a moment and consider the detail and man hours involved in the bigger metal sculptures. On a recent visit to the workshop of local Jindabyne artist Steve Croquett, we found Steve deep in concentration welding together this year’s creations for the 2019 Lake Light Sculpture. Needless to say, it does involve steel, a trademark of Steve’s creations. Although he is a carpenter by trade, Steve has been synonymous with manipulating steel, usually in the form of cowboys or his famous Easter Island heads. Observing his workshop, it was obvious he had a plethora of material to choose from. When asked what he saw when he looked at bulging shelfing overrun with metal and material hanging from the ceiling, Steve responded with a smile, “Treasure.” Hmmm… perhaps I needed to look through his welding helmet to see his treasure. “The late 90’s I saw some animals made out of old farm implements, and I collect all

types of old farm implements and anything old that have done the hard yards and look good,” said Steve. “So after seeing the animals I thought I am going to have a go at that.” Fast track to present day and he has shipped his creations to many different shows from Bondi to Bermagui, winning an award at Sculpture by the Sea at Bondi where his extra large Easter Island heads sat proudly in the famous sand of Bondi Beach. Having had success in his home town in Jindabyne as well, you can tell through the conversation that it may have become obsessive. Let’s just say there is a passion there to create and for sculptures that have not sold, they sit proudly on the premises and in a prized back room (man cave). First delving into art in the later 1990’s, his self taught craft and welding has progressed immensely and in 2007 he won the Lake Light with his “Big Catch”. Those stunning pieces now preside gloriously on the water’s edge of Lake Crackenback Resort. He has won the major prize and illumination but admits “I don’t have time to wire them up. That is just another job in itself. I would have to get an electrician in for my ideas.” This year Steve will invest hundreds

There are two sides to the Lake Light Sculpture for professional artists, yes, it’s great to win now that prizemoney has increased. But also, all artists love to sell their work. You will easily spot Steve Croquett’s entry in 2019, it will be welded steel and sit proudly on his home town lake foreshore.

Uniting for a cure LOCAL Snowy Mountains parents Natalie and David Kelly have been instrumental in organising families whose children have the extremely rare genetic disorder, Coffin-Siris Syndrome, to come together for a conference. The syndrome which is a crossover of genes affects mostly young children, and there are only 17 cases in Australia, eight in New Zealand and only 200 world wide. “The syndrome name originates from the two leading doctors, Coffin and Siris, one is unfortunately not with us anymore and one has dementia,” said David. “There is no cure at present, and no one in Australia knows much about the syndrome. There is an institute in Melbourne who have just started studying it.” When their eight year old son Declan was diagnosed in September, the geneticist of 30 years had never heard of the syndrome. David immediately started researching and since being on the forums has been in contact with every Australasian family via social media and phone. In America 88 families eventually banded together for a conference. David and other Australian families have arranged a conference on November 15-17 in Jindabyne where they will invite the 25 families from

Australia and New Zealand. But first they need to raise funds to assist families who are often laden with debt from medical expenses and would not be able to attend the conference. Jindabyne is holding a fund raiser in March and other families will do so in their areas. One geneticist doctor in America whose daughter has the syndrome is considering visiting Australia for the November conference. “There are some single mums there who are really struggling, and some kids Declan’s age can’t talk or can’t walk, they are in and out of hospitals a lot.” The March fundraiser at Rydges Snowy Mountains is aiming for 120 to people attend. There will be entertainment and auctions. While numerous people have indicated their support, David said he needs them to confirm. Half the money raised will be maintained in a fund for any of the families to access in absolute emergencies. The remaining funds will assist families with travel for the conference. David said the families bounce off each other through their communication and there are no experts in Australia, that parents are the experts in this syndrome which is

why it is important to assist medical people with their input and opinions. “Declan has been through so much with medical issues, we nearly lost him as a child. We have lost count on how many times he has been to hospital.” “It is obviously a kick in the guts for us to find out your kid has a rare syndrome, we thought it would just be one of those things he grows out of, but now the negative, it’s not.” David said that Declan himself is somewhat fortunate compared to others as he does not have seizures, but he does have severe respiratory problems and the family need to act immediately and call an ambulance.

Cookie art for Aussie skies TWO local businesses have collaborated to promote our region via Snowy Mountains Cookies new cookie bag which will debut in Australian skies on Qantas Mainline and Qlink domestic flights this April. Berridale artist Pauline Coxon’s design is the new artwork for packaging on the Snowy Mountains Cookies bag for the upcoming Qantas project. It is the second time Pauline has partnered Snowy Mountains Cookies for Qantas. For the past ten years Qantas passengers have been devouring Snowy Mountains Cookies, which offers additional promotional for the entire region. Nolen Oayda owner at Snowy Mountains Cookies said, “The new cookie bag for 2019 will be designed in a way that will allow us to keep the product running in our range even after the Qantas contract expires, with Pauline’s blessing.” “I think the brand Snowy Mountains is a great story and combining our locally made products with Pauline’s interpretation of our local surrounds

Briscoe Award in its 20th year THE Briscoe Art Award will celebrate it’s 20th year of competition in April. This prestigious award is the Raglan Gallery’s major regional art competition, instigated to honour the memory of John Briscoe, a well known artist who commenced his career with the Raglan Gallery nearly 50 years ago. Many fine artists have won the award and the Raglan Gallery has increased the Briscoe’s family award in donating the same amount of money to raise the first prize to $5000. There are several awards associated with the Briscoe, including the Monaro Art Award donated by James and Barbara Litchfield with $1000 first prize for art work by a local artist. This year the gallery is introducing the Unpackers Award, also donated by the Raglan Gallery with $500 first prize. In

memory of the late Diana Klima, one of the region’s most highly respected artists, the gallery has an award in her honour with best watercolour first prize of $250. Judging for this year’s event is Maryanne Coutts, Head of Drawing at the National Art School in Sydney. The gallery said they are very lucky to have a judge of this calibre for this year’s Briscoe competition. To enter this year’s competition you must submit all completed entry forms by 4.30pm Saturday March 23 and all art work delivered to the gallery by April 7. The judging will be on Friday, April 12 and all winners will be advised. Everyone is invited to the prestigious opening of the Briscoe Art Prize on Saturday April 13 at 3pm. Unified snow sport Ski & Snowboard Australia becomes first Australian Olympic sport to unify governance model SKI & Snowboard Australia (SSA) has created history as the first Olympic sport in Australia to unify into a single organisation to govern the whole sport from the grassroots to the elite. Effective from November, the sport of skiing and snowboarding will operate as one entity bringing together and capitalising on the strengths of the remaining State bodies Snowsports ACT (SACT) and NSW Snowsports (NSWS) to unify under the SSA banner. The move comes on the back of extensive consultation between all stakeholders, with each group recognising that operating as one entity will be the most effective way to consolidate the regional activities and achieve the sport’s mission. The unification model will mean that all resources and operations will be streamlined into one business and will remove any duplication, with an ability to have one strategy, workforce and financial management system in place. All existing staff will be re-employed and several key SSA responsibilities will be

decentralised to the new Jindabyne office to take advantage of the proximity to on-snow facilities during winter. SSA is working with the NSW Government Department Sport & Recreation on how the facility can be further enhanced to maximise the opportunity for athletes and coaches in the future. Unification will relieve the two State Organisations (SSO’s) of direct governance responsibilities but will preserve their financial and operational activities inside of SSA. This has already happened in Victoria with regional activities channelled through State Discipline Committees and the Victorian Interschools Committee. The unification structure will also include the protection of certain assets such as the Nordic Shelter at Perisher, various SSO Foundations and SSO cash reserves. These will be held in an SSA Northern account structure and overseen by a Northern Management Committee chaired by the existing Chairs of NSW and ACT. Ski & Snowboard Australia President, Dean Gosper, applauded all stakeholders for their commitment to working collaboratively to

SNOW: Mogul skier Matt Graham in the Australian Championships at Perisher and SSA President Dean Gosper at the recent World Championships. PHOTOS: Steve Cuff. establish a solution in the best interest of developing the sport. “Unification reflects the courage and vision of the State communities who have looked beyond their own borders and now see the benefits of working as a single national organisation for the benefit of the sport. “SSA will be a more effective partner to our athletes, our volunteers, our funders, and to the industry,” he said. A unified SSA will allow the sport to speak with a single, clear voice, particularly when dealing with it’s valued stakeholders such as our funding partners and resort hosts. Importantly, it will also provide enhanced

Snowy Mountains Magazine - 2019 - 36

integration of pathways for young athletes. The outcome is a result of cooperation between all parties and is the extension of a Sport Australia (SA) governance review some years ago and, more recently, a call from SA for sporting organisations to strive for unification as a model of best practice. The leadership groups of each of the three snowsports organisations have led the process and maintained frequent and transparent communication with the various communities. New Perisher Chairlift PERISHER guests will be waiting with anticipation for the brand-new Leichhardt Quad chair to open this coming winter. As part of a new $4.2 million development which includes new snowmaking in the Leichhardt vicinity, the new chair is a key upgrade replacing the old Leichhardt T-bar. Work has been ongoing over the summer on the new chair after the existing T-bar was removed at the end of winter while there was still a deep snow pack, resulting in minimal impact. With all parts of the existing Leichhardt T-bar including the original foundations now removed, Doppelmayr, the leading chairlift company in the world are on site and have commenced work on the top and bottom stations along with the six lift tower locations that will make up the new quad chairlift. Dopplemeyr Project Engineer, James Buckle, said they began pouring concrete before Christmas to set the foundations for the towers and stations of the new chairlift. “After Christmas we will transition down and begin working up the hill”.

The new Leichhardt quad chairlift will deliver a massive 75% increase in lifting capacity along with allowing the area to be accessed by children and beginners. The project will also involve the installation of snowmaking from the base of Happy Valley T-bar through to the base of the new chairlift. The new chair will be ready for the 2019 snow season and with the upgrade in capacity it will be a popular lift for access to the Leichhardt terrain park and the shelter it offers during snow storms on runs such as powder ridge. Perisher are also planning an upgrade to Mt Perisher where they will remove both the double and triple chairs and replace them with a 6-seat detachable chair, along with an upgrade of the Mt Perisher Restaurant. This development will happen in coming years. It was important to have the lifting capacity from the Leichhardt chair in place before any new chairs could be planned for Mt Perisher. You can find progress on the new works at www.perisher.com.au.

In The Chair with Matt Tripet

By Steve ĕĵ

SNOWY Mountains Magazine interviews an interesting Snowy Mountains character for a quick insight into their mountain life. We put them In The Chair and ask them key questions on how it all came about. This edition we talk to Matt Tripet, founder of The Fly Program. Q. Matt, where did you grow up? A. I grew up in country NSW in the northwest in Tamworth, about a population of about 70,000 people and a 10 hour drive from the Snowy Mountains. Q. As a kid what were you into? A. A lot of the things I am into now. I loved hunting, I love fly fishing, rubgy, anything in the outdoors was something that I really enjoyed, but in particular getting out and hunting deer or chasing trout in trout streams was something I really loved. Q. How did you end up in the Snowy Mountains, what brought you here? A. I came to the Snowies in 2010 to manage the adventure tourism products at Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa and develop new programs and activities. Q. I believe you did play some rugby here as well? A. I have, and I hope to play a few more games this year for the Jindabyne Bushpigs. I have mainly played at number eight or blindside breakaway. Q. At Lake Crackenback Resort you started up the Fly Program, how did all that come about? A. Having a huge passion for fly fishing, myself and wife Millie went through a pretty difficult period losing her brother Justin, who was a very close friend of mine as well. Seeing the benefit of having blokes off the grid, teaching them how to cast a fly line

I found a great synergy with having good conversations with those guys on a river. With a great need and wanting to have an impact on men’s health and our community we founded The Fly Program charity together as a husband and wife. I suppose it is a legacy that her brother has given us. Q. It has been going two years now, what do you offer those people who may be suffering and thinking of suicide? A. We are not in the clinical spectrum or in the suicide end of the cliff if that makes sense. We are an early intervention-based program. We see a lot of investment of government resources at the clinical spectrum, something like 90% of infrastructure and money is spent at the clinical spectrum, so this is really a program about giving men mental fitness. We take our bodies, we get them fit, we have got to get our minds fit, so our focus is around early intervention and prevention based strategies. We have been running a four day based retreat in the NSW Snowies that includes mountain bike riding, adventure camping, adventure cooking and fly fishing elements. We use those as a pathway to connect with guys. Q. The people who attend, what’s the difference of when they arrive to when they leave camp? A. The four day camp is one part of the spectrum, and then the program continues for a subsequent seven weeks. So it is a eight week program in total, those guys will do that in their own time. The difference has been remarkable, we had Cath Bylett from Jindabyne do a thesis as part of her university studies in clinical psychology. We were very fortunate to do a twelve month study on our

program and the results were overwhelming positive about creating strong and powerful pathways and providing long term reprieve for guys who participated in the program. Q. You have recently hosted the ACT Brumbies rugby team, what do you do with the groups? A. Our corporate groups are really important, and we call it our Corporate In Flight Program and once again it is very focused around culture and male culture, but also sporting team and high performance culture. We had 64 guys from elite athletes to management and a lot of mental fitness based activities but using participation in nature like fly fishing and camping as a means to be able to create strong and powerful pathways to run these programs. Q. You have been operating now for two years, what is the future for the The Fly Program? A. We have been very fortunate in our

AFFORDABLE ACCOMMODATION IN THE SNOWY MOUNTAINS The Jindy Inn is central to town and located only 200 metres from local shops, restaurants and cafes. We offer an on-site guest only lounge/bar/cafe that serves afternoon tea and après drinks. Guests also have access to free Wi-Fi, guest kitchen, drying room and newly renovated bathrooms. first two years to be able to invest over $100,000 into the community through our work now, which is something that has been really exciting for us. Which has resulted in over 100 men supported through this program. We are hoping to launch a Victorian Alpine Program in the coming months. Q. Is that still based around fly fishing, mountain biking, wilderness and nature? A. That’s exactly right, initially we will be running that and once things have been established we hope to run an independent chapter just like the NSW Snowy Mountains. Q. You are still passionate about fly fishing, how often do you throw a line in? A. I probably spend more time teaching and instructing these days, but I try to get out as much as I can. My teaching days and personal days still clock over 200 days on the river, but a lot of that is teaching now.

Barilaro continues to deliver Comment by Steve Cuff ONE annoying aspect of election time is the haters that come out of the woodwork and accuse the politicians of only handing out money to get re-elected. Yet if those same politicians did not give any money to the community those people would be the first to say the politician has done nothing for our region. Go figure…. The state election is due on March 23, so yes, the politicians are going to be active including the current member for Monaro, Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW, John Barilaro who is seeking a third term. In a media position I am probably more fortunate to see what happens on a regular year-round basis receiving updates and press releases from Mr Barilaro’s team. For the past five years I have attended countless announcements that virtually always involve the NSW State Government assisting the community via a grant of some degree which often benefit tourism. Some cheques are smaller than others, but what you must consider is most times those organisations and community groups, big and small, have often applied for that grant. The government is merely the conveyor of funds through various departments. Speaking to Mr Barilaro in February it was encouraging to here he is still passionate about the Monaro and the Snowy Mountains. “My job is to go and fight for our fair share and just because there is an election around the corner it’s not why we are making these announcements. PASSION: Deputy Premier and member for Monaro John Barilaro will seek re-election in March.

I have announced so far have actually been commitments, they are not election promises,” said Mr Barilaro. “It takes sometimes months or years to get something through the door and all I ask is for people to have a look at my track record over eight years, have I delivered. “The best way to predict the future is to look to the past and I have tried hard and have worked my guts out for this region, I love this region. “We are seeing a lot of money flow, that is my job, my job is to support our communities. There will be some election commitments coming up and some exciting announcements for this region.

“I think if you look at the last election I made a number of promises, well I have delivered those plus some. It is not all about elections, but elections do allow us to talk about a vision for the future.” You only need to look at the long list and the calendar dates of the announcements. Or ask a community group who Mr Barialro helped. There was no election two years ago but there was constant and various funding. Mr Barilaro said there are lots of reasons why he wants to seek a third term in March, most of it to do with unfinished business. “There are a lot of projects that I

actually want to see come out of the ground that we have committed to with funding on the table, we’re designing, that’s the most exciting part.” “I think there are some opportunities here, especially with Snowy 2.0, I want to be part of that. “Even in my own life since the last election I have had a new baby, I had a bit of a health scare. “It reminds me that these jobs are such an honour and they are only such a small time, so all of that together I feel I’ve got the energy to fight and the ability to put in another four years so I can leave this place an exciting prosperous region that I have always dreamt off.” Here is a snippet of projects Mr Barilaro has assisted with in recent years. $3m for Cooma and Bombala pool upgrades, $588k Berridale beautification project, $2.4m Jindabyne masterplan, Kosciuszko Road upgrades to deal with winter traffic, $600k Queanbeyan Showground Pavilion, $95k Showy Heritage Planning, $500,000 Cooma Showground upgrades, $44k Adaminaby Public School playground, $15m Bombala water upgrade, $250k BMX track Jindabyne, $5m Lake Wallace construction, $30k Dalgety showground upgrades, $170k Cooma Preschool, $200k Cooma Community Hall, $27m Kosciuszko National Park, $3m Jindabyne Library, $18.6m Cooma Hospital redevelopment. Ask yourself, would you prefer the Deputy Premier as your member, one who has more clout in the NSW Government offices or a newcomer who is starting from scratch.

Rail Trail progress THE proposed Rail Trail from Tumbarumba to Rosewood on the disused rail corridor has seen developments over the summer. Approved as a pilot rail trail for NSW in 2015, and to be funded by NSW State Government, there has been a considerable amount of behind the scenes preparation work being carried out by Council, contractors and community groups; a major component of which has been a full boundary survey

as well as a physical feature survey. The working group have also recently done a walking assessment of the trail looking at aspects of fencing, bridges, flora, fauna, obstacles and strategies for landowner access. The old Tumbarumba Station Crew Barracks have been moved back to near the rail corridor and the Tumbarumba to Rosewood Rail Trail plans can be viewed at the Tumbarumba Visitor Information Centre.

Tim has moulded all his life experiences along with a host of animal stars to present a highly entertaining two hour show. Add to the equation the purpose built rustic amphitheatre, audiences are wowed with the precise movements and intelligence of his cast. Along the two hour journey you are enlightened about life on the land and the high country, plus the workings of a country farm. Throw in a vast amount of laughter from the crowd, a few bloopers and antics from the animals and you have an award winning live performance that is choreographed to music and professionally presented. You will fall in love with animals as they all vie for lead actor, have a cup of team straight from the billy can and at the end of the show you can watch Tim shear a sheep and ask questions on the show. Tim is also a highly qualified horse trainer and regularly conducts clinics to teach people all his horsemanship skills. The Boggy Creek Show has several schedules shows during autumn and is one

of the major attractions in Tumbarumba, situated just out of town. On the drive to Boggy Creek you can also visit the monument which marks where police sergeant David Maginnity was shot by bushranger Dan Morgan in 1864. Sergeant Maginnity surprised an ambush of Dan Morgan’s bushranger gang and was shot in the head by Morgan. Locals believe the Sergeant was dragged by his horse for several kilometres until a stockman found the body. Sergeant Maginnity was one of the first New South Wales policemen to be killed in the line of duty. The nearby Glenroy Heritage Reserve with the Pioneer Women’s Hut and Cottage Craft Shop is a popular attraction. The Sugar Pines walk on the Batlow Road is one of the most popular and photographed locations in Tumbarumba. Here you can walk a thin corridor of towering pine trees with sunlight streaming in from all angles. You can find more information at www.visittumbarumba.com.au.

One huge street party EVERYONE knows Batlow is famous for its juicy apples, but if you have not heard their CiderFest in May is jostling for top billing in this small rural town. Without doubt the biggest day of the year in Batlow, the town closes the streets and thousands of folk from adjoining regions and towns descend on Batlow for one huge street party. The atmosphere is sensational, visitors wander the street tasting and sampling not only the best local cider, but various local produce and market stalls. There is a full list of cider brewers in attendance from the local crew of The Apple Thief, Batlow Cider Co, Wilgro traditional cider plus local beer brewer Tumut River Brewing Co. Since its creation this street party has breathed life into Batlow with over 6000 festival goers attending each year to celebrate the harvest of apples and another successful growing season. Australia’s leading cider producers stand shoulder to shoulder serving sparkling ciders in Batlow’s main street to showcase their own brand of “value added” apple products. Country folk meet city folk, friends and family catch up, community members open their homes for visitors and the day is filled with fun and live music across two separate stages. Don’t be at all surprised to see folk dressed up as “Wacky Apple Tarts”, all just part of the fun. Street theatre in “royal” guise will complement the colour and vitality of the day and young people in crazy costumes visit each year for the celebrations. Batlow’s home-made apple pies will be complemented by gourmet foods and exotic dishes from the Mediterranean, the Netherlands and Bavaria. A uniquely named German style sausage, the “Batwurst”, will feature alongside locally baked bread rolls and pretzels from Poppy’s Oven, an historic but still-working baker’s oven set in the middle of town.

Back to Nature Conference

Locally grown chestnuts, free-range eggs, jams, jellies and a wide variety of locally grown fruits and vegetables will ensure that visitors have a huge range of take-home local produce to choose from. The kids are well entertainment with amusements and in keeping with previous years tradition, a new cider song will be launched at the 2019 CiderFest, a catchy tune sure to be one of those that you can’t stop humming once heard. GETTING THERE Guests travelling from Tumut, Adelong and Tumbarumba area can take several scheduled buses but need to book in advance. Batlow has limited accommodation so staying in adjoining towns of Tumut, Adelong or Tumbarumba are great options and access the scheduled transport. Just be sure to book ahead for accommodation and transport. All travel details are on the www.batlowciderfest.com.au website

LOOKING for something different from the CiderFest, then you should attend the cider conference where you can learn more about the industry. There are several guest speakers talking on various subjects including Batlow residents Ralph Wilson from Wilgro Orchards and author Harald Tietze. Joachim Herrmann will discuss biology and Tim McNeilly will share experiences on fermenting.

BOAT: Spirit of Australia II on Blowering Dam.

Speedy year for Dave Warby By Steve Cuff

FAMILY: Ken and Dave Warby at Tumut’s Blowering Dam in 2018. PHOTOS: Steve Cuff

WHEN it comes to world records, none may have stood longer than Ken Warby’s world water speed record. In 1978 at Blowering Dam in Tumut Ken broke his own record in his rocket propelled Spirit of Australia boat and a speed of 511.10 kilometres per hour (317.58 mph). The record has stood for over 40 years. To this day he is the only person to have exceeded 300mph (480kmh) on water and live. Donald Campbell, Ken’s hero as a child died on his attempt after his hydroplane crashed at over 320 mph on his return run in his 1967 record attempt. Dave Warby, Ken’s son has been trialing his boat Spirit of Australia II for the past 18 months and in 2019 the Warby Motorsports team should be ready to

attempt the record. Up until December 2018 each trial run had resulted in faster speeds and more understanding of the boat. The December trial resulted in a few technical issues which the team has been addressing since. They will have a shorter hit out in Taree in February before returning for their next trial run in Tumut in 2019. At Tumut they can run the full 10 kilometre course and ramp up speed to exceed their fastest time so far of 350 kilometres per hour set in September 2018. At these speeds you need everything in your favour, and it is a full team mission across all facets of the boat and safety. Before each run a team of boats from SES and volunteers scan the waterway for any visible debris. To reach maximum speeds the water condition also must be right. Too many ripples and

rough water does not equal a fast boat. Dave has said all along that boat speed is not a problem and if all goes according to plan the team will assess a record attempt sometime this year. “I am not using much throttle to run 350k’s. That’s got much more up its sleeve and the last 2000rpm in that engine is where it really cakes on the speed. But it’s creeping up and doing it right. That’s how dad broke the record, he crept it up and he fixed problems along the way, and we are doing the same.” You can watch Dave Warby in action from the banks of Blowering Dam at Tumut. The crowd has been building each trial with a great atmosphere. The team aim for three to four runs per day depending on conditions. Stay tuned for dates at Facebook Warby Motorsport Spirit 2 - The Fastest Team On Water.

Man from Snowy River country WHEN you are looking for an event with nonstop four day entertainment, the Man from Snowy River Bush Festival in Corryong has all bases covered. Just remember to bring your cowboy hat and join in for a ride through history and great horsemanship. The Man from Snowy River Challenge is the showcase event of the Festival, which endeavours to ďŹ nd the modern day Man from Snowy River. When it comes to the test of good all round horsemanship, the Challenge is second to none. Witness the outstanding horsemanship and skill of today’s Australian Stockmen and women. All their skills will be on display as they compete in the six gruelling preliminary events set to challenge the most skilled and professional horse and rider teams. The top ten scoring riders move forward from the preliminary events to take centre stage on Sunday and earn their place in the ďŹ nal events; Paterson’s Brumby Catch and the Kosciuszko Stocksaddle Buckjump. The street parade is a huge event with Corryong streets lined with people. Led by Riley’s Riders after having conquered the steep and rugged terrain riding from Tom

Groggin Station to Corryong, the parade is an event in itself. The Re-enactment of Banjo’s famous poem is not to be missed. The show starts with the story of how Jack Riley and Banjo might have met and the yarns they may have swapped over a bottle of whisky at Tom Groggin Station. This year there are two shows to accommodate the growing crowd at 10am and 2.30pm. FISH: One of the trout ponds at Eucumbene Trout Farm.

Vibrant trout business It’s a gem of a property! At around 1100 metres above sea level and occupying 18.5 hectares of well-grassed Monaro land, this multi-faceted treasure is now on the market. Ideally located 33kms from Jindabyne and 45kms from Cooma, the Eucumbene Trout Farm boasts – among many attractive features – three residences, a six-hectare private lake stocked with trout plus a smoke house and cafe. The gracious five-bedroom weatherboard homestead, with its original Sundowner verandah, dates back to c.1890. Sympathetic additions and renovations over the years include a new kitchen, an efficient heating system and 45,000-litre rainwater tanks. The three-bedroom manager’s cottage, which also dates to c.1890, is currently undergoing renovations that include two new bathrooms, a large open plan kitchen and lounge/dining area plus new gas heating and hot water systems. A third residence, Lakeview Cottage, is proving extremely popular with trout fishermen or those seeking an idyllic place to enjoy amazing views and complete

privacy. The furnished holiday let (built 2015) overlooks the private lake and comprises two bedrooms, one bathroom, an open plan kitchen and living area plus gas heating and hot water. The Eucumbene Trout Farm is an iconic Snowy Mountains business that has been a popular tourist attraction from the time of its establishment in the 1970s. It continues to provide hours of pleasure for adults and children alike, keen to experience the thrill of catching their very first trout! The hard work of the current owners has resulted in two recent prestigious awards – the inaugural Outstanding Small Business Awards for the Snowy Mountains Region and the Southern Area NSW and the farm was a finalist in the NSW State Awards. Last but not least, the delicious smoked trout and smoked trout mousse produced by Eucumbene Trout Farm has been awarded medals in the Fine Food Australia (Melbourne) and Sydney Royal Easter Show competitions.
