The First Word DURING winter the first port of call when I write this column is to check the weather forecast. It is not that I need to be extra excited to pen a few words, but I like to see what lies ahead and what could happen once the magazine hits the stands. What a great surprise to see that the last week of May has a decent snowfall arriving, all just in time for the start of the 2019 snow season. The resorts have been active with their snowmaking taking full advantage of May cold nights to start their preparations. If Mother Nature plays a fair game, she should allow us to be off to a white start on the June long weekend. The opening weekend is always special and with so much entertainment scheduled, it really is just ski and board in the morning and then relax and enjoy the rest of the day’s festivities. Winter is always a great time of year in the Snowy Mountains and sure being a keen skier helps. I am just as excited as everyone else to carve a few early season turns, so the combination of natural snow and manmade certainly suits me. You must admit the snow industry has recently had a few stellar seasons of snow

and visitation. But look beyond that and behind the scenes is a lot of investment into the whole industry. Sure, we had Vail Resorts purchase the lift companies of Hotham and Falls Creek for a whopping $179 million. But look at each resort individually and they are spending. Perisher will unveil a new $4.2 million Leichhardt chair this season, Mt Buller will unveil a $9m chair, last year Falls Creek installed a new chair and Thredbo are on the cusp of huge investment if all gets approved. Stay tuned for confirmed news that Thredbo will build a $10 million plus gondola to replace their Merritts Chair. They have other projects in planning stages. You can see them in our last edition which is online at www. snowymagazine.com.au. In this edition we have a bit of everything to suit the keen snow enthusiast, the casual visitor and to keep everyone up to speed with new happenings around the region. We are especially excited about the prospect of the Snowy Alpine Heritage Centre developing over the coming years to be a reality. As the state government

puts the finishing touches to the Go Jindabyne 2036 Masterplan, this could be a key driver of tourism as a standalone attraction. Enjoy the June snow and stay tuned on our Facebook page or via the website for in between edition news.

Fresh Turns in Early May WHILE most of us were admiring the early May snowfalls, a few keen skiers and snowboarders took full advantage and made their first turns for the Australian season. Two separate groups, Jake Sims and Erryn Reeder from Canberra and Jindabyne’s Rohan Kennedy and Miles Clark crossed paths on a blustery day on May 11 hiking for fresh snow in the backcountry from Charlotte Pass lookout. When asked what temped him to go out Rohan Kennedy said it was the recent snowfall and “this time of year if it comes down you’ve got to go.” “You are a bit uncertain how it is, but we were out there around that time last year and it was a bit similar, so you know what you are in for. “We made a few turns down there and were half way down and we were having a bit of bite to eat and then we heard them (Jake and Erryn) yahooing down as well. So, we climbed back up and seen them and had a chat. “Yeah it was a bit variable. A bit icy and rocky and then some good turns and some spring like snow in there as well. Always nice, always good fun and great to be out skiing again, that’s the main thing,” said Rohan. Jake Sims said with Friday nights snow

forecast they decided to risk it and head up on Saturday. “We were a bit worried there wouldn’t be enough but a day in the mountains is better than a day at home. We got up to Charlottes and looked out to Carruthers and realised it was on. It was pretty quick access, only two hours to Mt Carruthers. When we got there, it was blowing that hard that we ended up having to take our gear off, put crampons on and walk up as we kept getting blown over by the wind. I reckon it was gusting at a 100kmh as it was blowing us over.,” said Jake. “Did two lines on the western faces of Carruthers which was fun but sketchy.

Found a few spots to really open up and throw some pow turns in. Then we headed for Blue Lake via Carruthers Creek, we were touring the whole day from 8am to 5.30pm, touring and constantly moving. We went to

Arcing Turns Two-time Winter Olympian Jono Brauer launches The Arc Livigno, Italy. ALWAYS dreamt of taking a family snow holiday to the Italian Alps? Two-time Winter Olympian Jono Brauer has created The Arc, a junior skier development program for kids aged 7yrs+ in the epic Italian resort of Livigno. Designed for passionate young skiers who want to progress their skiing in a tailored development program, The Arc’s goal is to take promising young skiers to the next level in a dynamic and fun environment. As current Head of Thredbo’s Mountain Academy, Jono recognised the need for a ski training solution during the northern hemisphere winter focussed on developing

VIEW: A skier concentrates on task at hand.

the key fundamental skiing skills and then transferring those skills into competition. The Program offers three streams: Core Skill Development (7yrs+), Alpine Racing (12yrs+) and Slopestyle (12yrs+). The two or three week Core Skill Development Programs focus on developing technique across all disciplines; the Alpine Racing Programs focus on GS and Slalom plus some Ski X and the Slopestyle Programs will develop terrain park skills. Jono chose Livigno for several reasons, but mainly for the exceptional training opportunities on offer and the variety of experiences for all the family. The terrain - being long, wide, open runs above the tree line is ideal for skill development, and Livigno’s high altitude means snow quality and quantity is typically excellent. Additionally, Livigno provides The Arc with ample hill space including a dedicated training lift. “The amount of training we can get in in such a short time is incredible. With a dedicated training lift, the kids get more training in one day than you could normally achieve in a week,” explained Brauer.

‘Imperfect but Delicious’ ‘I

CIAO: On the slopes at Livigno.

Now a parent of two ski-loving kids himself, Jono also saw the need for families to enjoy a seamless ski holiday together rather than sending kids to a live-in program. So, The Arc offers extras for all the family including a ‘Ciao’ party (welcome drinks), sunrise skiing with the coaches, two day trips for the adults (ski trip St Moritz and a ski/ wellness day in Bormio), a family fun race and the ‘Arrivederci’ snowcat dinner atop Mottolino mountain. “Livigno is such a unique destination – not only are the mountains and training exceptional; the town itself delivers the Italian hospitality we all love, amazing food that won’t break the bank and an endless list of activities. My kids loved the massive indoor waterpark ‘Aqua Grande’, drift go-karting, ice skating and husky-sledding,” said Brauer.

Carve up the Groomed TECHNOLOGY has come a long way in ski design this past decade, so much so that it actually makes it easier to ski now for the majority of people. With the introduction of shaped skis most skiers found it easier to carve, and rightly so. It helped us all. One trend that has been very noticeable in recent years is how many people are using wider skis. By that I don’t mean just fat skis, which might be classed at 100mm or more, but the all mountain skis that start from about 85mm under foot up to 95mm. Yes, they are great, and I personally fell in love with a few pairs of those especially when I ventured off piste. While these skis are still great for off piste, this season I am looking to go skinny, and that does not mean losing umpteen kilos (although that would help). What I mean is for those days where I am just cruising the groomers and carving up the corduroy, I want to revert to a ski that is under 80mm under foot. Last season on a guided Thredbo backcountry trip to Kosciuszko I was supplied with some lightweight Volkl skis that were only 80mm. What I found when I came back into the resort was that they were a fun lively ski that I thought I skied

SMOOTH: Think about a ski that suits your skiing and where you ski. PHOTO: Kastle.

better than a wider one. So hence my thoughts for this season. Fred Guyer from Stockli skis in Jindabyne summed it up beautifully last year when discussing. “Fat skis of 100mm and carving skis under 80mm could be compared to riding a road bike or a mountain bike,” said Fred. And when you think about that it makes great sense. You would not necessarily take a road bike onto the trails and while you can ride a mountain bike on the road, you know the road bike will make life easier on the bitumen. So narrower skis it is and with Stockli

having the super Laser AX 78mm, that is one I want to try for sure. The Stockli Laser SC 72mm has been a proven performer as well for on piste. The brand new Laser AR 83mm will also be tested if I need more width. David Harrison from Harro’s Snowsports at Lake Crackenback Resort said people are coming back to skis that are more applicable to the conditions. “Some people are having two or three sets of skis, but for Australian conditions that are more often hard pack and you just own one ski, a lot of people are coming back in width and instead of having to

Snowy Mountains Magazine - 2019 - 9

work harder on fatter skis they find it more enjoyable on something from about 74 in width up to the low 80’s,” said David. Kastle have released a new DX line of ski that have one at 73mm under foot plus a brand new PX71 ski specifically for groomed runs. Sounds skinny yes but keen to try those also. The RX 12 slalom at 66mm is another great high end ski. This winter if you are buying new skis, think about where you ski most and talk to your ski shop about what could be a few good choices. And then as always, you must try the ski before you buy, that is the most important part of choosing a ski.

Feasibility for Alpine Heritage MEMBERS of the Snowy Alpine Heritage Association will be anxiously awaiting the outcome of the current feasibility study for a proposed Snowy Alpine Heritage Centre. In February Deputy Premier and member for Monaro John Barilaro awarded $95,000 for the feasibility study. Local company TRC Tourism with involvement from Dabyne Planning, both based in Jindabyne have been awarded the contract for the study. The Snowy Alpine Heritage Association (SAHA) established in 2006 is an Incorporated, not-for-profit, community group who are focused on preserving the heritage of the Snowy Mountains region. The association said the reasoning for the centre was, “time and change create history and in doing so can often destroy it. People and events are forgotten, artefacts are lost, journals destroyed, buildings ruined, stories and memories fade and eras end. Long term campaigner and President for the association, Tom Barry, said “the great dream is underway.” “It is a first step, a huge step and we probably could be up to two years before we see shovel in the ground,” said Tom. “It will be an interactive cultural centre, with today’s virtual reality and technology and as such it’s almost endless what you can do. What we really want to capture is the narrative of the people that made the Snowy Mountains today.” TRC Tourism are leaders in their field and are sought after tourism experts. Penny McLennan from TRC Tourism said, “the committee have some really great ideas.”

HISTORY: The old town of Jindabyne.

“Once you start talking to them about it, not just about the stories which in themselves are really interesting, they have some creative and exciting ideas about to how tell the stories, then you get really enthusiastic,” said Penny. Leisa Caldwell said, “the association

PHOTO: Courtesy Garry Abbottsmith. started in 2006 but I think the dream has been there for many years before that, especially for people who came from the old town (Jindabyne).” “It will cover the whole Snowy Mountains, there is such a diverse history right across the mountains, essentially

it will take in the Snowy Monaro area as well as the Snowy Valleys area. And of course, all the national park. You can’t put a geographical boundary,” said Leisa. “It’s pretty much history of people in the mountains, right from Aboriginal history to today.” Tom Barry said part of the idea came “about the mid 80’s when we were running this Man from Snowy River award, we got a NSW Government grant to have a book written about a lot of the people who had been awarded the title, and the guy who wrote it, Mike Hayes gave it a title, Before We’re Forgotten.” He said it was a common theme that they all wanted their story told before we are forgotten. Ivan Pasalich from Dabyne Planning said it was a very exciting project to work on. “At this stage we are looking for a suitable site for the centre and working on what the centre will include and how big it will be. In the range of 2-10 hectares, so a fairly good size centre and hopefully getting views of the lake and mountains.” Tom Barry has suggested that for people who want to contribute to the history of the region, not to try and give them anything now, but to accumulate their own personal inventory, write their stories, and compile in some format for when they are able to accept and store them. “At the moment we have our hands full.” With the current Go Jindabyne 2036 Masterplan looking at the future of Jindabyne and its surrounds, this is the perfect project to be a tourist destination itself. It could be a great asset for the whole region and add to the tourism year-round.

Revolutionary Beanie By Adam Begg EVERY year there are plenty of new innovations but this revolutionary, world first, comfortable beanie that is as safe as a helmet created by two Brisbane guys definitely caught my attention. I wear a helmet whenever I snowboard because I’ve had several concussions and don’t want CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) - a brain condition associated with repeated blows to the head that is linked to the development of dementia. But I have a love-hate relationship with my helmet. It can feel heavy and uncomfortable, not to mention its bulkiness in bags. So, when I heard about a product as safe as a helmet that looks, feels and fits like a beanie, I followed its progress. A snowboarder and biomedical engineer Rob Joseph and his product engineer friend Brodie Robinson, students of the university of Technology in Brisbane, Queensland, came up with the idea after one of them had a near miss on the snow. Joined by IT guru and economist Liam Norris, they put Anti Ordinary on kickstarter.com and have raised over

$200,000. This idea that stimulates curiosity has the potential to be a massive success across many industries. Their Anti Ordinary beanies have a merino wool layer but are crafted from a special compound that begins soft and flexible but hardens instantly on impact. They use Polyanswer, a non-Newtonian material like that used in back protectors, elbow guards and shin guards for cycling and motorcycling. Polyanswer disperses force but it doesn’t have a suitable impact profile for absorbing complex impacts such as those on the head. So, the team devised a complex layer construction. These non-Newtonian fluids are comprised of particles that slide past one and other when moving slowly, but jam against each other when forced to move quickly. They are not like a single use product like a helmet but survive multiple impacts. After the impact the beanie returns to its natural, flexible state. Comfortable, Flexible and reusable! Co-Founder Rob Joseph said he was excited to debut the innovative design and get it into manufacture. “We have been overwhelmed with the support from our backers and are

TECHNOLOGY: The new Anti Ordinary beanie design.

so thankful to our community who have made it possible to bring our product to market,” Mr Joseph said. “We can’t wait to launch this stylish and comfortable design that will change the way we look at helmets, and hopefully, save lives,” he said. The Anti Ordinary fits like a beanie, is compatible with headphones and goggles. It is breathable and the outer knit layer is washable. The guys are finalising independent safety tests so it will be certified and

Snowy Mountains Magazine - 2019 - 11

adhere to global helmet standards. The finished Anti Ordinary should exceed American and European standards. Anti Ordinary will come in six colours. It is foldable and compact so it will be lighter and when flat it’s half the size of a helmet so it will pack way easier for those overseas holidays. For more info see the Anti Ordinary website at www.antiordinary.co, Facebook or pre-order on www.indiegogo.com. Expect to see these on the slopes in January 2020.

Snowy 2.0 Charging Ahead THE Snowy 2.0 project is set to charge ahead after receiving the green light from the Federal Government in late February and appointing their main contractors in April. Following an extensive competitive tender process, the Future Generation joint venture between Salini and Clough was officially appointed by Snowy Hydro as the principal contractor for the design and construction of Snowy 2.0. Voith Hydro will provide the electrical and mechanical fit-out in the new power station. The roads component of Snowy 2.0 Exploratory Works is in progress, after completion of a range of pre-construction activities such as boundary-marking and fencing of heritage and environmentally sensitive areas at Lobs Hole. Roads contractor Leed Engineering and Construction is upgrading sections of existing roads and tracks and establishing 2km of new road so that there is safe and reliable access into the project construction site. Clough CEO Peter Bennett spoke to Snowy Mountains Magazine in Cooma recently saying, “It’s quite an honour actually, the legacy from Snowy one is tremendous and to be intrusted with carrying that in Snowy 2.0 is quite an honour and something we take very seriously, very, very pleased.” “All the underground development is part of what we do, that is very familiar with us. What Clough does bring is working within Australia and that construction capability and that local community

In February Prime Minister Scott Morrison said “the project is a huge investment in Australia’s future, not just our energy future not just our climate future but our economic future. This is a project that when it was first undertaken changed our nation.” “What we are talking about here is reliable renewal energy, we are talking

We’ve got heaps of staff who live up here in Jindabyne and all over the Snowy Mountains region, our business was born and bred here, we are not going anywhere and in fact we are getting bigger with Snowy 2.0, which is really exciting.

For a lot of projects in the Monaro that we funded over the last term of government we are now seeing completed. “There is more to come and there are a lot of promises for Jindabyne and the Monaro and for the council especially around road funding. THE Jindabyne boat ramp precinct was officially opened in late May by Deputy Premier John Barilaro. In attendance were Snowy Hydro’s Stephanie McKew, Snowy Monaro Regional Council’s Suneil Adhikari, councillor Brian Old, several other staff and invited guests. Suneil Adhikari said the project had been a number of years in the making but it was very exciting to see it completed and being enjoyed by the boating community. “Boaters are now enjoying improved access to Lake Jindabyne with more than $1.3 million in upgrades to this access road. The upgrade demonstrates what can be achieved with a combined effort.” The Deputy Premier congratulated the workers and complimented Snowy Hydro on being a great corporate citizen and their

SSA Seek New Alpine Director SKI and Snowboard Australia’s (SSA) Alpine Director Mick Branch will vacate his position at the end of May. After much thought and reflection, the former World Cup Coach to the US Ski Team has decided not to renew his SSA contract after a twoyear tenure. “Mick’s contribution to the sport has been profound and we wish he and his family all the best for the next chapter in their lives,” said SSA CEO Michael Kennedy. “Mick departs the role having led a comprehensive review and developing a long-term strategic plan for our Alpine pathway. The review and subsequent implementation of the recommendations has seen the beginnings of a cultural shift in the sport and has provided a blueprint for other SSA disciplines to follow. “Central to the philosophies of the national strategy is a focus on skill development and building the capacity of the club and pathway programs to deliver best practices which are critical to long term athletic development,” Kennedy said. Branch, who is one of the most knowledgeable people in alpine skiing said he was looking forward to new challenges.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to provide a new direction for alpine ski racing in Australia alongside my fellow SSA teammates. I will certainly look on with interest to see how it progresses,” Branch said. “I firmly believe that the changes we are endeavouring to embed as a sport to the culture and to the pathway will have positive long-term impact on our new generation of alpine skiing talent. “It is critical to maintain the focus and efforts on skill development and as equally important is the integration of developing physical, psychological and cognitive capabilities required to deliver sport skill development, enabling improved athleticism to produce optimal athletic potential. “I have been involved in ski racing for over 25 years in a professional capacity. I have applied all my energy and passion to the role and am really pleased with the firm steps the sport of alpine is making to achieve its potential. It is now time for someone with fresh energy and passion to step in and continue the great work we have started,” said Branch. Pathway activity such as the club performance planning workshops and

No Camping on Lake Foreshore LOCAL council will again enforce a no camping policy on Lake Jindabyne foreshore. The move which was initiated in 2018 will see the foreshore area patrolled by council rangers and police with the “No Stopping Areas’ operating from 6pm to 7am for the duration of snow season. Signage will be updated between Curiosity Rocks and Poo Bay, Wollondibby Inlet, the Claypits, Town Centre and Townsend St/Cobbon Crescent and is targeted at the influx of overnight camping during the winter season. As per last winter, perpetrators will be fined, and fines may be applied more than once if offenders return on the same evening.

Create a Difference LEARNING to ski or snowboard certainly has some challenges in your early days. Add to the equation those with a disability and you can understand those challenges might be that much more difficult. The good news is the Disabled Wintersport Australia (DWA) programs overcome all these hurdles and assist in helping people access the joy of snow sports and sliding down the slopes. As the accredited National Sporting Organisation for delivering adaptive snow sports and life changing experiences to families and people living with disability, they themselves need assistance. Each weekend volunteers take time out of their life to help others, but the organisation needs many more to step up and volunteer so they can continue to create a difference in these people’s lives. Once you see the joy on participants faces and the happiness it brings to each family you realise that all the generosity of your time really does play a huge role in furthering each person’s goals. “We can’t operate without volunteer guides,” said DWA Chief Executive Officer Rick Coate. “If you are an intermediate to advanced skier or snowboarder who would like

an added challenge on the slopes and have some time to volunteer, then DWA has a unique opportunity for you to be fully trained in our adaptive snowsport guiding program.” The continued success of our elite Para athletes is just one example that anything is possible if you are given the chance. This year alone Australia produced sensational results on the World Cup circuit and all athletes were originally involved with DWA programs. The Australian trio of Simon Patmore, Sean Pollard and Ben Tudhope signed off from the 2018-19 World Para Snowboard season in style, claiming multiple spots on the podium and clinching great results in the overall season standings. After a standout season from the three men, Patmore and Tudhope claimed second in the overall crystal globe standings for their consistent performances throughout the 2018/19 season. Pollard was hot on the heels of Patmore in the men’s SB-UL category placing third after a great season by him. Ben Tudhope claimed Para Snowboard’s discipline crystal globe in the men’s SBLL2 banked slalom in a great reward for an outstanding season.

Each weekend at your local resort is not the World Cup, but for participants just starting out it could be a stepping stone if they choose that route, or the mere satisfaction of sliding down the green run on their first morning will be all conquering for those individuals. DWA’s volunteer adaptive snowsport guiding is a fantastic experience and a great opportunity to meet like-minded people. You will be trained by qualified DWA trainers and you will be able to assist snowboarders and skiers down a run and safely around the mountain as well as have a chat on the chairlift as you experience

Monaro Spectacular

Your One Stop SNOW SHOP

THE Monaro Committee for Cancer Research (mcCr) have once again organised an outstanding fundraiser with Monaro Spectacular. Five teams have been practicing for months leading up to three sold out performances at Cooma’s Multifunction Centre. The Sparkle Crew, Smooth Operators, Mountain Groovers, Can-Do Crew and Bombala2Broadway teams dazzled the crowds with their costumes and performances. The teams in total have raised $186,000 and the event raised over $230,000. The three nights saw 1200 people sit down for their dinner and show to watch the 44 performers; all local people who went beyond their comfort zone on stage for the worthy cause of cancer research. The dance events alone have raised over $750,000 since 2010 with money raised donated to various causes in the region and for cancer research. The committee lead by president Sandy SchoďŹ eld should be highly congratulated on yet another stunning event and fundraiser. Anyone who would like to donate to mcCr can visit their website www.mccr. org.au.

Holy Bowly First for Thredbo THREDBO will introduce an exciting new event this season when Holy Bowly makes its debut down under from 9-15 September. The legendary Holy Bowly has been a smash hit for snowboarders in the Northern Hemisphere and now the event arrives in Thredbo for the biggest and coolest snowboarding event to ever grace the Southern Hemisphere slopes. For one entire week the world’s best snowboarders will compete in this insane new style snowboarding event based around shredding a one-of-akind custom setup with no rules on how to find the right line. Anton’s Terrain Park in the Central Spur area will be transformed into a unique combination of hand-shaped bowls, hips, spines, berms and transitions where the best of the best can surf the snow. Think giant skate park bowl with huge mounds of snow and the best riders catching air, carving berms and going radical. The event, presented by Snowboy Productions, Thredbo, Quiksilver, Libtech and Modest Eyewear is sure to have the local snowboarders etching to see the setup which has been described as much

more than just a snowboarding event. Holy Bowly has become an annual international gathering of riders who all share the true stoke of snowboarding, and the design crew who show their creativity style with the interesting setup. Great news for everyone else who wants to try their own hand at Holy Bowly is the course opens for public shredding on the weekend of September 14-15 after the event. Here you and your mates can ski and snowboard the entire set up and test your own skills all you want on the Saturday and Sunday alongside the best athletes in the world. Don’t think all the action is refined to the slopes as there’s just as much après action throughout the entire week with a jam-packed schedule of parties, live concerts, pro rider signings, art exhibitions, talks, movie screenings plus more. Thredbo Snow Party MENTION Thredbo and snow in the same breath and watch peoples heart rate start to ramp up, as they know how good their season will be when they finally arrive for their snow holiday. Thredbo’s mix of great terrain, longest runs plus their après entertainment and village lifestyle are simply second to none. Each winter season they have a hectic schedule of free village concerts, après sessions, Australia’s biggest artists plus great events that litter the calendar. You can hear the Sydney and Canberra party crowd already whooping and hollering just thinking about it.

POP: Join in the GH Mumm après session this winter.

Starting from the opening weekend the village will be alive and pumping, and it rarely lets up until the season closes in October. This season the Heineken village concerts return along with the highly popular First Base vintage après soiree. Here Tom Tilley and Hugo Gruzman bring their high energy and special music back for the Thredbo faithful. Their retro parties have become a huge hit, so breakout the fluro and retro gear again this winter. Torah Bright’s Mini Shred has grown hugely and now the kids can’t wait to rub shoulders with Torah and her cast of pros and stars. With a purpose-built mini terrain park on Friday Flat, it is like a scene from the pied piper as the younger brigade follow every move their idols showcase. And the smile on their face tells the whole story, a great day out. Looking for an adrenaline rush then the GH Mumm Top to Bottom could be your event. This traditional race starts above Eagles Nest in early morning, the sunrise chairlift ride is worth the entry fee alone. The run to the start, strap or

click into your gear and then the schuss to the valley is not for the faint hearted, especially when fellow riders are only elbows width away. For spectators, champagne on the Kareela Deck for breakfast is the perfect vantage point to see all the action swing by. The after party soothes all bruises and pain as the crowd rev up and pop corks. Think champagne showers, confetti cannons and some of the biggest name bands and DJ’s on the stage. The openair sessions complete with fire pits and

hot tubs will certainly set the scene for a weekend to remember in the mountains. The Rainbow Mountain heaps gay ski week will be back again this year so pack the glitter and get ready for an absolutely fabulous time in the snow. Party starter Kira Puru is headlining this massive week with support by a bevy of incredible artists. No outfit is too outrageous for this 5-day festival. New Coach for TSRC THREDBO Ski Race Club (TSRC) have appointed Craig Branch as their new head alpine coach. Branch comes with a wealth of knowledge, having raced on the World Cup circuit for a decade, competed in three Winter Olympic games for Australia and coached at international level with the British team. Speaking with Branch before the season started, he said he wants to “utilise the Australian season to our advantage and using it for fundamental skill development so kids can have more longevity in the sport.” The club has taken a slightly different structure in recent years after the revised road map set by Ski and Snowboard Australia’s Alpine Director Mick Branch (Craig’s brother). Club President Richard Davis said, “not everyone is aiming for world cup but all those who want to be racers and do enough days and train hard enough still have a spot in the club.” “But what the club needs to do is to ensure that the training it provides is ultimately suitable for kids who really have the talent, the desire and the ability to go further and that’s probably what most of the restructure is about and what Craig will be working on. And that is completely aligned with what SSA wants, said Davis. “Let’s try and progress kids through and give them as much skill development as possible and pass them on to the next level in the sport,” said Craig Branch. “If the kids don’t learn the correct

If people don’t have their fundamental skills, not ski racing, but skiing itself, if they don’t have those simple fundamentals skills, they will hit that ceiling very quickly. “The goal is to give kids as much fundamental skill as possible for longterm development of athletes. It’s basically nothing new, its realigning the clubs because they veered away from that in the past.”

EACH winter the Thredbo Historical Society host several events, one of which is their exhibition launch winter welcome in June. This year should be a fascinating insight into Thredbo’s transformation during the 1980’s decade. Wayne Kirkpatrick, Thredbo’s Managing Director at the time will be guest speaker where he will reflect on the era which included the implantation of vast infrastructure and the 1989 World Cup. Wayne said they had a lot of fun in the 80’s with carnival week and all the entertainment and music, but the most significant part was the planning for the upgrade of the resort and snowmaking, where the resort went from 20 days top to bottom to 100 days. “We worked with Group Delta and Ted Farwell and we put together that $40 million plan for slope grooming to create the supertrails, snowmaking, quad detachable chairlifts and Friday Flat. That really was a major investment that Greater Union undertook as Lend Lease sold Thredbo to Greater Union in 1986. It cost $18 million to buy Thredbo but they had to spend the $40 million.”

Traditional Alpine Lodge In the Heart of Thredbo Village

Another major event that is likely to never happen again in Australia was hosting an alpine World Cup. “The world cup was just an opportunity to unveil what we had done and present it to a very large audience. The key to which was to getting Wide World of Sports, Channel 9, to cover the whole thing for a period of four or five days to the world. It was a 200-millionperson audience that watched the world cup live telecast.” Interested parties can attend the evening on Saturday June 15 from 5.30-8.30pm at the Thredbo Alpine Museum. Tickets are $20 for non-members and drinks and nibbles are provided. RSVP to Victoria Incani on 02 6457 6400 or email thredboskiclub@bigpond. com.

The series features event-experience opportunities, including a time-trial, primarily targeted for new participants to the sport. Those that have participated before and are looking to practice their raceskills for the upcoming regional events are also eligible to register for the series. The time trials will be in Alpine, Snowboard GS, Ski Cross and Snowboard Cross. Educational sessions will also be held around the event dates. There will also be an Interschools Participation and Development event at the end of the season on September 14 at Thredbo for those looking to compete and try out Interschools in the 2020 winter season. This year will mark the 32nd year

We are currently planning for 19 days of competition during the winter season at the Travelplan Ski Northern and Sydney Regional Championships, the SSA Red Energy Northern Cross Country Championships, the Subaru ACT-Southern NSW Regional Championships and SSA Subaru Northern States Championships for all junior Snowsports athletes, their schools and families. These Championships will be held at Perisher and Thredbo Alpine Resorts. The Australian Championships will be held in Mt Buller in 2019 and return to NSW in 2020. We hope to see you at Interschools in 2019. For more information on the Interschools Snowsports Championships, visit interschoolssnowsports.com.au.

2019

THE Interschools Snowsports Championships is a series of snowsports competitions where students from Kindergarten to Year 12 compete for their school as part of a team or an individual in any of our nine discipline events. Thousands of students have been introduced to competitive ski and snowboard competitions through the Interschools

Championships. Many athletes have gone from competing for their school, to competing for Australia, and we have seen 40 NSW and ACT Olympians and Paralympians begin their competition days in Interschools Snowsports Championships. In 2018, 3,279 students from 385 NSW, ACT and QLD schools competed. At the recent Australian Ski and Snowboard Awards, two NSW schools were recognised for their achievements during the 2018 winter season. The Scots College was awarded Snowsports School of the Year, while PLC Sydney was awarded Outstanding Achievement of the Year for a Small School. Both schools were awarded on their merits of encouraging new participants to compete in Interschools and encouraging existing participants from the school to try new disciplines. Every winter season, many new participants enter the Interschools Championships for the first time. Understandably, competing in a snow sports event for the first time can be overwhelming. Because of this, Interschools has

Snow Photo Tips WHEN it comes to taking good snow photos, sometimes it does not matter whether you are wielding an expensive SLR digital camera or the simplest of phones. If you consider a few basic principles, you will create more interesting snow photos. Here are a few tips to start your winter but do apply to all photos. BACKGROUNDS One key aspect of snow photography in early season is your favourite resort may not be totally covered in snow like mid-season, so you need to think of

your background. This is where directing your subject to adjust their position or - which is often easier - moving slightly yourself and lining up a nice background before anything else. You can do this without anyone knowing. A simple step to the right or left could give a nice blue sky instead of a horrible orange net or a messy background with lift towers and unwanted people behind your subject. If there is a nice snowy backdrop, move the group or people by even walking them to a better position. In this group photo there was snowmaking in the trees, so I moved the whole group to where I wanted them, away from skier traffic. You would not know if this image was June or midseason August, but it was opening weekend in June some years back. The key here is to ďŹ rst look beyond your subject and have a mini game plan, and don’t be lazy. Most people simply just point and shoot when they could do so much better. What they get then is boring messy photos. After all, what you are creating here is your own history of your family, friends or travel so make them better photos.

â—ź

TIP: Move your groups to have nice backgrounds and shoot the kids from below their eyeline. PHOTOS: Steve Cuff.

KIDS PHOTOGRAPHY Look in the magazines or newspapers of any kids’ photos and what you will most always see is the photographer below the eye line of the child. By crouching, bending or lying on the ground you bring the child to life and they truly become the centre of attention in the photo. There is an additional beneďŹ t here as well, you can hide a lot of background distractions behind the subject or limit them at least so

they are not distracting your eye. To get this friendly snow ďŹ ght photo of two brothers, I kneeled on the snow which has the boy in front within the upper part of the image, so all the attention is on him. No matter whether you are just uploading images to social media, or you may want to print one for the office, a little pre planning will totally improve your photos. Happy shooting this winter and keep your hands warm.

THE Australian snow industry has entered a new era with Vail Resorts acquiring the Victorian lift company leases and related infrastructure at Falls Creek and Hotham in April for a final purchase price of approximately AU$179 million. Vail Resorts purchased Australian Alpine Enterprises Holdings Pty. Ltd and all related corporate entities that operate Falls Creek and Hotham lift companies from Living and Leisure Australia Group (LLA), a subsidiary of Merlin Entertainments. Adding to their existing ownership of Perisher Ski Resort in New South Wales, Vail Resorts now operate three of the largest lift companies in Australia providing even more options for skiers and snowboarders in Australia. How this will change the Australian snow landscape in future years is yet to be fully understood. What it does mean for skiers and snowboarders with Vail Resorts’ Epic Australia Pass is you have great value that offers three Australian resorts on one pass plus the international stable of Vail Resorts in North America and affiliated resorts in Japan. The existing Hero Pass will be valid in Falls Creek and Hotham during the 2019 Australian season with guests having the option to upgrade to the Epic Australia Pass. Hero Pass must have been paid in full before upgrading. At time of going to print the Epic Australia Pass access to Hotham was also dependent on an amendment to the lease, which requires additional governmental approval. The advantage of Hero Pass holders upgrading to the Epic Australia Pass would be for use at Perisher in 2019 plus international

travel this coming northern winter. The pass also affords many other discount benefits at Vail Resorts’ properties including food and beverage, snowsports lessons, retail discounts and depending on the resort, accommodation discounts. If you were not travelling overseas in 2019/20 or did not want to ski at Perisher in 2019, you could use your Hero Pass for this Australian winter. The Epic Australia Pass is valid in the northern hemisphere after it has been used in the Australian season, meaning purchase now and use in the 2019 Australian winter to be valid then for the 2019/20 northern hemisphere. While Hotham and Falls Creek have had a joint pass, the addition of Perisher is sure to tempt guests to travel in both directions. Victorian skiers with the Epic Australia Pass may be interested in heading north to Perisher, and current Epic Australia Pass holders at Perisher to visit Victoria. Without doubt the Epic Australia Pass is the best pass for not only Australian snow options but international travel. Vail Resorts have a stable of top shelf resorts from their flag ship Vail and Beaver Creek resorts plus Breckenridge in Colorado, Whistler in Canada, Park City in Utah, Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood in Lake Tahoe, California plus

Snowy Mountains Magazine - 2019 - 26

affiliated Japanese resorts of Hakuba Valley and Rusutsu. Vail Resorts, Inc., through its subsidiaries operate 20 worldclass mountain resorts plus their affiliated partners. For international travellers some resorts do have holiday restrictions which are easily overcome by choosing dates carefully, plus with so many resorts to choose from there are options galore. Guests can also upgrade to Epic Australia Plus to avoid any restriction dates. Hotham and Falls Creek websites have all the details and frequently asked questions relating to the Hero Pass. Visit www.hotham.com.au or www.skifalls.com.au. For all information on the Epic Australia Pass including all international options and resorts visit the www.epicaustraliapass. com.au website.

New Leichhardt Chair Set for Opening PERISHER will unveil its new $4.2 million Doppelmayr Leichhardt quad chair project as soon as snow and weather allow. The new chair replaces the old Leichhardt T-bar, which started out life as “number 8” in a line of surface lifts that stretched across Front and Centre Valley. The new chair will increase lifting capacity by 75%. During the summer crews from Perisher and Doppelmayr worked together along with impressive skills of the Blackhawk helicopter pilot who lifted fours towers and their assemblies into position. In early May the chair was baptised with an early snowfall and by mid May chairs were on the cable. Perisher Chief Operating Officer, Peter Brulisauer, said the project had run smoothly and on time, due to detailed planning and a great working co-operation between Perisher staff and Doppelmayr. “There is not many lifts that you can build where you can say there really is something for everything, but this lift

really does do that,” said Brulisauer. “It’s going to be really different. My earliest memories of Leichhardt are getting lifted off the ground when T-bar ropes used to be pretty short and we had wooden T-bars, and when you came in to both compressions, if you were by yourself then you were in the air, especially if you scored a short T-bar rope, which was a pretty fun ride. “I remember getting my ticket pulled by the mountain manager for doing helicopters over the number 8 lift track skiing when the powder was on. You know, I grew up skiing Perisher with all the other kids and we were just having fun in the resort. It’s a great place, Leichhardt is an awesome place to be skiing, as a kid all that terrain in there is just super fun. “The way that the T-bar used to cut up the middle of it in many ways ruined a lot of the terrain because you had to keep your distance from the T-bar line. Now the way that we’ve constructed the lift, the tower locations and the lift alignment means you will be able to get off the top

and head straight back down the fall line and branch out to the right and enjoy all that great terrain, whether it’s fresh or whether you are heading to the terrain park or if you are a beginner heading around through Snowy Trails.

Name that Run By Steve Cuff FOLLOWING on from our last edition where we mentioned how some of the run names came about at Perisher, this edition we have scoured the trail map again to come up with some information that may be new and of interest to you. Looking at Blue Cow in the summer you would easily understand why Rock Garden would have such a name bestowed upon it. During the early winter as westerly snow falls blow and deposit snow it gradually starts to fill in. But realistically, it is not a run you venture in after one or two storms as is it does take longer to be fully skiable. But when Rock Garden is at its best in peak season it is without doubt one of the best off piste runs in the resort. Riding the Ridge Chair look to your left and scout your line even before you ski it. Just make sure you take a left turn of the top of the chair and follow the traverse line staying high. This will lead you to great fall-line with mixed terrain that is best suited for advanced or experts. On a powder day and especially if the wind has blown in more snow it will be deeper than most places and the best part of this run is it leads straight into

Yarrandoo to give the best advanced vertical run. Yarrandoo in Aboriginal language means “place of the white gum tree” although the spelling does seem different. Yes there are many gum trees that line the run, and the trees are skiable to skiers right but again when this run has an abundance of snow, on a powder day or perfect corduroy you should only have eyes for lapping this loop until that Blue Cow Ridge chair crowd arrives. There are many great runs at Perisher and wide on Eyre is Shifty’s, named after Grant Turnbull a long-time ski instructor who turns 90 this month. While Shifty does not ski anymore he still frequents the resort numerous times a season for a few ales. When Grant was teaching, he would often lead his groups out here where the terrain is somewhat gentle closer to the groomed runs, and as you venture out wider there are great hits and stashes. Don’t go too far or be prepared for a short walk back to Eyre T-bar. There is less vertical on Shifty’s as opposed to Rock Garden, but each will afford you great turns during the winter.

Park and Air LOOK skywards in Perisher’s Front Valley and you are sure to see a plethora of athletes styling up their best performances in the terrain park. Each year some of the world’s best athletes, emerging stars and international teams visit Perisher purely to access their world class parks. From Olympic gold medallists, skiers and snowboarders, it has been an impressive list over the years. To the uninitiated it may appear to be just spins and big air, but there is a method to their madness and another language altogether. The vocabulary and names for all the tricks are just as impressive as their manoeuvres. Pictured here are young athletes from the Alberta Park and Pipe Team which train at Fernie in Canada when they are not attending competitions. They paid a visit to Perisher last year for a month of training with head coach Chris Ebbern and are expected again this season. Snowy Mountains Magazine caught up with the crew for a photo session and was highly impressed. Who is up for a bit of air time this winter…..?

Progress for 2036 Masterplan By Steve Cuff AFTER the second round of community consultations in Jindabyne in early May, the NSW planning department will now sift through their accumulated content in preparation for submitting a draft Go Jindabyne 2036 Masterplan later this year. There was a strong turnout of residents for the consultations and robust discussion which will assist in fine tuning what the community wants and needs. Attendees were able to further refine their main goals for the masterplan and a panel including Bruce Easton, Dean Lynch, Alice Chilcott and Ian Grant engaged in set topics of discussion.

In addition, you could have also participated via an online survey and there was a community paper distributed that offered information relating to the first round of meetings in December. Snowy Mountains Magazine spoke to principal planner Rukshan de Silva and Gary Barnes who has replaced Lee Shearer, who was originally overseeing the masterplan. Gary steps into the role well up to speed and has hit the ground running. Gary said from his perspective he will continue with a very strong commitment to bring the community along with him and they are hoping to capture the sentiment of the vast majority of people that represent the broad community. “The technical studies are close to being finalised and when you put those technical studies alongside the very rich information from the community consultations it will allow the next steps in the masterplan process to take place,” said Gary. “Some people would be very clear about their aspirations what Jindabyne and surrounds will look like, the technical studies will be able to tell you whether that is possible and provide options going forward.” Rukshan De Silva said they are working

comments that come back from the exhibition, we make changes to the plan and test it again with the community working group and then take it up to the minister’s office.” The NSW planners will take all this information and start the behind the scenes process. So, while it may seem that it has gone quite over the winter months, be assured that there will be plenty of behind the scenes activity. Once the public exhibition is released this will be an important stage for the community to look closely at the draft masterplan and make sensible and constructive comments should they be needed.

Alpine Conference in Tasmania By Genevieve Fahey THE Northern Tasmanian Alpine Club (NTAC) on Ben Lomond hosted the 6th Australian Alpine Snowsports History Association (AASHA) conference in May. The hosting by NTAC coincided with its 90th anniversary with guests privileged to hear from two of their very early pioneers – David Harvey and Kathy Petrovsky, both born in 1929 when the club began.

FASHION: Ken Dawes with his collection of old ski clothing.

The conference was a great success with more than 70 participants including speakers, registrants and organisers. There was good representation from the Tasmanian Ski Clubs, Thredbo Historical Society, Perisher Historical Society, National Alpine Museum of Australia (Mt Buller), Falls Creek Historical Society as well as from individual clubs and locations, including Charlottes Pass, SLOPES, Koscuisko Alpine Club, Mt Stirling and Cooma Ski Club. The approach to Ben Lomond is via the spectacular unsealed road aptly named Jacob’s Ladder. At an elevation of 1570m it is described as one of the world’s famous hairpinned roads. There had been rain in the days prior to arrival so it was extra challenging for those driving up for the first time. Graeme Holloway gave an engaging presentation on the construction of this road which, once opened in 1963, improved access to the Ben Lomond ski fields. The conference included presentations on the Mountain Huts on Ben Lomond and other Tasmanian mountains, the flora and fauna, the geology, the establishment of a ski patrol and the early years of skiing on Ben Lomond. The highlight of the conference was a parade of skiing fashions throughout the ages. Ken Dawes, an avid collector, presented his collection using live models. He projected photographs on a screen matched the clothes on the models as faithfully as possible to those in the photographs. It was a wonderful walk

Two separate groups walked up the slopes, one lead by Ambrose Canning to the Summit Hut and the Dumitchmill SC Hut; the other went with Robert Tilley to an area known as Little Hell where the 1955 Australian National Ski Championships were held. The first and only time this event was held in Tasmania. Shann Turnbull, a competitor in that event, talked to the conference about this event. Another group took in the village and the history of the various huts/lodges built at the base of

The 2020 AASHA conference will be hosted by the Falls Creek Historical Society, the dates are yet to be finalised but most likely be in April. Everyone is welcome to attend, stay tuned at Facebook Australian Alpine Snowsports History Association.

Alpine Australia

Life on the Currango High Plains and Beyond

Thredbo: Pioneers, Legends, Community

By Craig Lewis and Chris Munn Edited by Judi Hearn and Helen Taylor A celebration of the Australian Alps portrays the stunning high country region unique to the Alpine areas of New South Wales and Victoria – the areas which are often snow covered for a number of months each winter. This superbly photographed coffee table pictorial features over 150 stunning images of this magnificent region, allowing readers to become immersed in the beauty which alpine Australia offers by way of aweinspiring images, many in panoramic format. Available at local outlets including Fox Tale Books in Cooma, Café Nest in Tumbarumba and Thredbo Newsagency and on the www.booktopia.com. au website.

This book is about the mountains. Our mountains...and the men and women who lived and worked there for over one hundred and fifty years. Mostly we are exploring the Northern side of the Snowy Mountains because that’s the central point of our story, Currango...the sweetest place to all who have lived, worked or visited; the cattlemen, the miners for gold, the drovers, the fishermen. The 101 page book has a plethora of wonderful old images and is available at Jindabyne Snowy Region Visitors Centre, Cooma – Foxtail Books, Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre, Cabramurra General Store, Adaminaby Store, Yarrangobilly Caves, Tumut Visitors Centre and Tumut Newsagent.

By Chas Keys As part of the 60th anniversary celebrations, Thredbo released Chas Keys book, Thredbo: Pioneers, Legends, Community which contains 33 chapters, 176 pages and details Thredbo’s history right from the beginning. Twenty two chapters are dedicated to the pioneers and legends who helped shape what Thredbo is today. The book was recently awarded the Skade Award by the International Ski History Association which was accepted in Park City by Randy Wieman on behalf of author Chas Keys. The book is available at the Thredbo Alpine Museum or visit the website www.thredboalpinemuseum.org.au.

Building the Best Instructors By Paul Lorenz HAVE you ever wondered why the technique you learn in a snowsports lesson is often very similar despite your instructor’s accent? Better yet, have you thought about where technique is developed or why we aspire to ski the way we do? Chances are that your instructor (regardless of their nationality) has been trained and certified by their national instructor training organisation who send a team to attend the Interski congress. Interski is an event that facilitates the collaboration and exchange of ideas between the finest snowsports instructors, coaches and athletes from 37 nations around the world. Since 1951, Interski has been held every 4 years with Pamporovo, Bulgaria playing host in March for the 2019 congress. For professional instructors and coaches, representing their country at Interski could be considered the pinnacle of their career. It is not a competition, however it is incredibly competitive with each country wanting to prove to the world that they are the highest performing, most innovative and the most evolved organisation within the international snowsports community. The six-day event features daily on-

snow workshops and indoor lectures led be each country, technical demonstrations, nightly skiing exhibitions, formations runs, key note presentations by prominent individuals within the industry, and plenty of opportunities for individual team members to meet and share ideas. All of this with the focus of evolving and progressing snowsports instruction, coaching, technique and the snowsports industry in general. Interski is a festive event where the best skiers, snowboarders, adaptive skiers, telemarkers and nordic skiers in the world, demonstrate and share their ideas. The Australian Professional Snowsports Instructors (APSI) fielded a team of 16 and for the first time ever, included demonstrators from all snowsports disciplines. Our on-snow workshops and presentations were very well attended by other countries and tied in with our general theme: “How we train versatile instructors the Australian way”. Australia lead a morning and afternoon onsnow workshop along with an indoor lecture in the evening. On-snow we gave attendees the option of either joining a session focused on how we train instructors to be versatile teachers, or how we train instructors to be

versatile skiers. During our indoor lecture our objective was to share a little bit about Australia, our culture, the variables we face within our industry, and the simple structure used to communicate knowledge, understanding and ability to our instructors to operate quality lesson experiences in all situations. All the workshops and lectures presented by other countries were attended by at least one APSI team member across all disciplines. We will now be sifting through all the valuable information learnt to determine which will inspire change and be implemented within the Australian method. Once determined, this new information and changes will be disseminated throughout the

Australian resorts, in our instructor training courses and instructor manuals, with the effort to improve snowsports instruction throughout Australia. Ultimately the beneficiaries of our attendance at Interski is each and every guest who takes a lesson in an Australian resort. To follow the #AusDemoTeam’s experience at Interski, watch the 10-part Interski TV webisode series on the APSI YouTube channel. You can also find more about Interski by visiting the APSI website, www.apsi.net.au.

SAFE: Protect your gear with some insurance.

Insure Your Gear DURING a snow holiday it is often disappointing to hear people have their gear stolen. But it is a fact it can happen so what can you do to protect your valued assets of skis or snowboards. Ski & Snowboard Australia and Snowracer have teamed up together to offer Snow Equipment Cover for the recreational skier and snowboarder as well as race competitors. Snow Equipment Cover provides insurance for your snow equipment against theft and/or damage to skis, snowboard, boots, bindings and poles both domestically and internationally from the date of policy purchase through to April 2020. Whether you work in the snow, ski or snowboard just for fun or compete at any level, Snow Equipment Cover is available to you. Naturally there are some terms and conditions and you will need to have receipts of proof of purchase, but if you have just recently purchased new

You will need to sign up as a Snowracer member for free, and from there follow the prompts to the insurance page. For more details you can visit the www.snowracer.com.au website. WE HAVE THE BACKCOUNTRY COVERED

International Resort Choices EVERYONE loves a great snow deal, and if you book early for your overseas travel you will save the most. So where do you go? Aspen Snowmass is one of the most famous resorts in the world, and better still has the skiing and terrain to back up all those great après stories you may have heard. Mogul Ski World have some great early bird deals for couples where you can choose a selection of hotels or guest houses from Aspen Square, Hearthstone House, Hotel Aspen, the Little Nell Hotel of the Chateau Aspen. With four resorts within a short drive the skiing is unlimited, so if you can stay an extra week, you should just so you can experience it all in one trip. Aspen Mountain rises straight up out of downtown Aspen with long groomed runs, a great lift system and plenty of advanced terrain if you like a challenge. With stunning scenery, 996m vertical rise and 762 cm of annual snow, you know it is serious skiing and boarding to be had. Ride the Silver Queen gondola to the top and choose your line while you admire the view. The choices are endless from great Colorado corduroy, tree runs, powder, bumps and great fall line. Aspen Highlands is another great choice that offers sensational groomed and intermediate terrain from mid mountain down, and for those wanting more the black runs are plentiful and the hike to Highlands Bowl a tradition for most. Snowmass Village is perfect for the family where cruising takes on a whole new meaning. Here you can roam from one side to the other on majestic blue runs, with scatterings of black runs should some family members want more. Buttermilk is another family friendly mountain and when you had all four together, Aspen stands out from the crowd with endless variety. Canada has a better exchange rate than the USA, plus they also have a huge range of resorts. The always scenic Banff has three resorts, Lake Louise, Sunshine Village and Norquay and is a true ski town. Sun Peaks has something for everyone from the mid to lower slopes for kids to carve up no matter what their level. Intermediates are in heaven with long runs descending all the way from the summit and when the powder is on, those glades, tree runs and steeper terrain higher on the mountain certainly deliver. With a cosy village at the very base, ski in ski out does not get much better and all with that friendly Canadian hospitality. Travelling to Europe is there any more impressive alpine village than Val d’Isere in the heart of the French Alps. With the aroma of fresh baguettes wafting through the village as you wander to the lift, you will be soon be engulfed in the French way of life. The skiing is awesome and no other way to describe it. Oh and big. Allow one day to travel from one side of the resort and back which consists of great skiing and gondolas, chairlifts and a funicular above the Tignes area. With such long and varied groomed runs you will never be short of options, but if you want to ski off piste in the powder, be sure to enlist a guide. In Europe they have different rules where you are responsible for your own safety once off the groomed trail. Brush up on some French words before you go to engage more with the locals. Bonsoir…..
