The First Word SPRING is a great time in the alpine region. Not only do we have an abundance of snow to continue skiing until the very end of the season, but we also undergo a subtle change of thinking as we morph closer to summer mode. But before we think too much about the warmer months, what a great winter season 2018 has been. We have topped the two-metre mark for only the eighth time in 26 years, powder aficionados have been relishing the blizzards and the season has been extremely busy as people flock to the Snowy Mountains. September will be sensational spring skiing and snowboarding conditions, so be sure to step out onto the slopes and carve up some of that great corduroy and spring corn. Soon enough it will be flowing into the rivers and lakes and we will be wishing next winter to come around. Speaking of next winter, be sure to buy your early bird season pass from your favourite resort as well. We have a great spring edition for you with snow related stories plus a sneak peek at some of the summer opportunities.
There has been plenty of news with Kosciuszko National Park embarking on new hiking and mountain bike trails and Thredbo will again see two wheels schussing their slopes in summer. Hikers will soon be wanting to hike to Mt Kosciuszko and the alpine flowers will be blooming. A lot to look forward to indeed. On this page we have Dave Warby doing over 320 kilometres per hour in his Spirit 2 jet powered boat. Tumut’s Blowering Dam on September 1-2 will be Dave’s next weekend trial where he is expected to push up over the 400kmh, then return in late October for a final trial. In February or March he is likely to start his final campaign to break his father Ken’s 40-year-old world water speed record of 511.11 kmh. Make sure you visit Tumut to see Dave and stay tuned to our Facebook page for more updates. For now, sit back have a read and enjoy the spring …

INFORMATION FOR MEMBERS & THEIR INVITED GUESTS
Best of the best
This season the snow depth has passed the two-metre level for only the eighth time in the past 26 years. WINTER 2018 is shaping up to be one of the best snow seasons in the past 26 years judging by the Snowy Hydro snow depth levels recorded so far at Spencers Creek. In mid-August the depth exceeded 203cm with more snow in the forecast. In the past 26 years dating back to 1993 there have only been eight seasons where the snow has exceeded the two metre level. The year prior in 1992 a huge 316cm of snow fell with massive September snowfalls. Visitation this season has been one of the best on record and no doubt all resorts will report they have had their own individual record visitations, or at least on par with any of the recent best. Weekends have been extremely busy and Fridays and Mondays have seemed busier than normal as people venture away for extended weekends. People often ask what is regarded as a good snow season, and really any depth over 125cm has the resorts fully operational and for seasons in the past that have hit beyond the 150cm mark there has been exceptional skiing and snowboarding. This season has also seen some very low temperatures which
has been ideal for snowmaking. We start spring now with a massive base which will see snow on the Main Range until Christmas. Last year with a top base of 240cm there were pockets of snow lasting into February. Spring this year will see some exceptional snow just like 2017 ensuring weekends remains constant and midweek strong until the end of the season. September has always been a great month to ski and board, so just because the weather might warm up in the cities, keep your eye on the web cams here in the mountains and you will see the slopes covered in white for a long time yet. Regardless of whether it exceeds any of the previous best seasons only time and snowfalls will tell, but for now get out and enjoy the 2018 snow. Snow depth more than 200cm in past 26 years 2004 225.6cm 1995 212.2cm 2012 220cm 1996 254.2cm 2017 240cm 2000 262cm 2018 TBA 2003 201.3cm

$10 Million Charlotte Pass Masterplan Charlotte Pass Snow Resort has announced a $10 million, 10-year capital investment program for the resort. THE announcement made in July will see an unprecedented investment at Charlotte Pass which will include an increase in lifting capacity, refurbishment of Kosciuszko Chalet Hotel and extending their season to open on the June long weekend. Kevin Blyton, Chairman of the Blyton Group said the “announcement demonstrates our commitment to the long-term growth of Charlotte Pass Snow Resort. We believe this investment over the next 10 years will transform Charlotte Pass, building on its legacy as an on-snow experience like no other”. One of the highlights will see an expansion of accessible terrain through the installation of a brand-new surface lift towards Mount Stilwell and the replacement of the Basin Poma with a new surface lift. The new next generation Basin surface lift will be tailored specifically to beginners and increase capacity. The resort will undertake a feasibility and environmental impact study (EIS) and prepare a development application (DA) and EIS statements for both new lifts. New automated snowmaking will also be installed to cover the Kosciuszko Triple Chair (to Mid-Station), Kosi Carpet and Basin Poma areas including a new pumping station and fully automated snowmaking gun. In what is great news for early season skiers,
CPSR will extend their opening times to operate from the June to October long weekend each year. The ‘Grand Old Lady of the Mountains’, the Kosciuszko Chalet Hotel will undergo a major refurbishment of all guest rooms plus food and beverage outlets. The resort said the Chalet will still retain its heritage characteristics, but the accommodation will see an upgrade of all guest rooms and suites, re-configuration of Adams cocktail lounge and the cellar bar. The current gift shop and general store will see expansion. This investment will also see the development of year-round activation of the resort. The construction of conference and multifunction facilities at rear of the Kosciuszko Chalet Hotel will facilitate functions and conferences of various sizes. They will also look to develop a summer events program. The resort will also move towards the provision of accommodation, food and beverage facilities year-round, as well as the operation of the Kosciuszko Triple Chair during peak periods outside of winter. Access to Charlotte Pass is via oversnow transport for 8km from the Skitube building at Perisher. The transport fleet will be expanded

to include two additional oversnow vehicles to ensure ongoing rapid, safe and reliable access to the resort. Charlotte Pass will also be investing in a range of initiatives to improve the environmental performance of the resort. The sewerage treatment plant (STP) will see a replacement of automated programmable logic controllers plus additional construction on the STP to re-clad buildings and a new roof over outdoor tanks. Roads within the resort will be sealed, the development of a stormwater monitoring program and increased investment in energy saving initiatives. There will also be
a development of a new waste and recycling program to increase awareness. In addition to works on the Chalet, a new staff accommodation building will be constructed and a re-configuration of the current Bella Vista staff accommodation to become the new Charlotte Pass Snow Centre. This new centre will encompass an expanded space for further development of children’s snowsports programs, a new day lodge venue and be the central oversnow transport hub. The existing snow centre will become a dedicated equipment hire centre. The Charlotte Pass 10-year masterplan will deliver the new initiatives from 2019 onwards and all proposed works and timeframes are subject to NSW Government planning approval process. Jindy Idol springboard for artists FOR aspiring local artists Jindy Idol has certainly been a tremendous stepping stone to launch onto the bigger stage. In past years there has been no shortage of talent and this year the annual event will be hosted for the 8th time in October by the Tim Draxl Performing Arts Fund and supported by South East Arts. “It does actually get better every year, but this year was even beyond my expectations. I had an incredible sense of pride being able to share talent with my two judges,” said
Ŷ
Shelby Grace
Tim Draxl after the 2017 show. “The main objective apart from raising money for the fund is giving the kids an opportunity to get up and perform. The fact that they have something to work towards every year, it means they are going back to their teachers and saying Jindy Idol is coming up let’s put something together.” That opportunity has seen a host of Idol participants get a taste of performing before an audience. Notable contestants who have graduated to bigger audiences and budding music careers are Jindabyne’s Brad Cox, Cooma’s Shelby Grace and Oscar Litchfield and Kesha Oyada to name a few. Brad Cox won the Toyota Star Maker award at the Tamworth Country Music Festival, has now released an album and is touring the country with his powerful country voice. Young 16-year-old Shelby Grace has just recently graduated from the CMAA Academy of Country Music, Tamworth. “It was an amazing experience where I was privileged to co-write songs, learn about the music industry and perform with some huge stars including, Lynn Bowtell, Jayne Denham, Travis Collins, Roger Corbett and Alan Caswel. Inspired by her American roots,
Shelby is fast becoming a versatile and accomplished singer and guitarist. She was awarded Peoples’ Choice runner up in the 2017 Australian National Busking Championships and her recent performances include Tamworth Country Music Festival, The Peak Festival, Cobargo Folk Festival, Snowy Mountains Country Music Muster and Floriade. Jindabyne’s Kesha Oayda won Idol in 2017 and is following a similar path performing at the Australian Busking championships as well as Peak Festival at Perisher. Her unique voice is always applauded at Jindy Idol each year. Oscar Litchfield said the first time he performed at Jindy Idol he won the people’s choice award. “That really helped me get my first proper guitar, which was a dream come true. That guitar helped me at gigs and I still play that guitar today.” Oscar has been in demand at venues during the busy snow season and has just released his first single “Front and Centre” and will soon release an album. “A five track EP that I recorded with Mike Horneman at Studio 150, so that has five tracks on it and super keen to get that out in November,” said Oscar. Jindy Idol is not just for singers, it is also

a springboard for dancers. This year local talented dancer Gracie Anderson attend a workshop with the Sydney Dance Company. The Tim Draxl Performing Arts Fund also host workshops during the year. In June there was a drama and public speaking workshop for 8 to 12 year olds, run by Elise McCann who has also judged Jindy Idol. Tickets and artist entries are available from the Snowy Region Visitor Centre in Jindabyne and the Cooma Visitors Centre. To follow on Facebook go to TimDraxlFund. The 2018 Jindy Idol will be held on Sunday October 21 at Jindabyne’s Memorial Hall. Doors open at 6pm for 7pm start with supper supplied by the CWA.

L’Étape Australia Local Update OFFICIALS of L’Étape Australia will hold a community meeting in September where they will discuss aspects of the cycling race to be held on Saturday December 1 this year. Followers will know that this year the start and finish will be in Jindabyne for both the ride and race categories, with Banjo Paterson Park being the major focus and site of the L’Étape Australia Village. Organisers have been working to implement their full schedule of entertainment and extra activities to supplement the actual cycling event. Residents are reminded there will be road closures on the day, and the race

beginning at 6.30am and the ride beginning at 8.30am. More details of road closures will follow in later months. At the community meeting they will provide updates on the event as a whole and advise of other facets that may be of interest to schools, volunteers and the local area in general. L’Étape Ambassadors Mathew Hayman, Amanda Spratt and Matthew Keenan are some of the biggest names in cycling and leading into the event organisers have advised they will be visiting local schools to give speeches and share their passion for cycling with the youngsters. The speeches will include introducing the students to the sport of cycling, present information about the Tour de France, which is the biggest annual sporting event in the world and discuss the passion for cycling that has seen each of them reach the very elite in their sport. For the older students the ambassadors will hold talks and cover the mechanics of the sport but also the physiologic aspects of cycling. For any older students who would like to gain more of an insight into cycling and the L’Étape Australia event, they will be invited to volunteer on the Saturday in the L’Étape Australia village. The event is aiming to better their previous entries and attract upwards of 4000 riders, and with an event of this magnitude comes many logistics.

A volunteer at the Jindabyne finish line.
For this reason, the organisers are asking for local volunteers to be involved with a target of over 200 people. There are many different roles available: from the registration packs and the information points to marshalling on the race course, food zones and managing the start line. With the new race format starting and finishing in Jindabyne, the majority of these will be in town. Race officials will be liaising with key volunteers who would like to be team leaders to help recruit other local residents who they know would like to assist. One key reason local volunteers are sought after is for their knowledge of the surrounds which will be highly informative to the visiting competitors and their families.
Every volunteer will receive a uniform, a volunteer certificate (recognising the work done during L’Étape – very useful for the young professionals) and will be invited to the volunteers’ barbecue where the ambassadors will be in attendance. Volunteers do have to register their interest online at www.letapeaustralia.com. All community members and volunteers are welcome to attend the meeting, with volunteer registrations taken on the evening.
The community meeting will take place at the Rydges Jindabyne at 6:30pm on Wednesday 19th September.

Snowy 2.0 progress THE Snowy 2.0 project is still only in its infancy, but the wheels have been in motion with the Environment Impact Statement (EIS) for the exploratory works on public exhibition for a month now complete. During this time people could read the report and can make submissions if they have any concerns about this portion of the project. All submissions will now be submitted to the Department of Planning where they are processed. Charlie Litchfield, Snowy Hydro Manager – Environment said ““we have to satisfy the Department of Planning that we have addressed the concerns. Some of them are from members of the public and some of them are from agencies and there is a fairly complicated process called response to submissions.” Mr Litchfield said that normally with big infrastructure projects they get a lot of submissions and talking among people the general feeling is they want the project to go ahead. Snowy Hydro have noted prior and also in the EIS that make a conscious effort to address specific areas as they encounter them in the National Park. It is why in their Environment Impact Study they made concerted efforts around areas that are habitats for the Smokey Mouse and the Booroolong Frog which is on the endangered list. Mr Litchfield said you do a really thorough check of what is out there, flora and fauna and every now and then they come across some that are not common. This is why they have devoted more detail in their EIS for these animals. “We like to highlight that once we find
these we go back to the designers and we say listen, we are going to have to make sure if we are coming down the road we are not impacting significantly on the homes and habitat.” “There were quite a lot of adjustments to the designs to make sure were not significantly impacting on smokey mouse and you do that by literally saying on this section of the road where we know they are we are placing limitations on the designers to stay within a certain boundary. “In terms of the frog we said we are going to make sure we have a really healthy set back of 50 metres. We have designed in these measures that help the special habitat that we found.” The next cause of action from Snowy Hydro when the EIS has been approved is to start works for the upgrade of access road. This will be a three to four-month project alone and once this is complete they will then commence the tunnelling. Mr Litchfield said that’s when the project really kicks in as the tunnelling will take up to 34 months for the 3.1km tunnel. He pointed out that the exploratory works component is a very small component of the whole project and while the exploratory works may get approval in December, people should understand this is only the beginning of the project. DISCOVERY CENTRE COOMA The Snowy Mountains Scheme has truly been thrust back into the spotlight since the Snowy 2.0 announcement. What it has also done is bring back a renewed focus on the history of the original project which has been described as one of the great engineering feats in the world. Cooma is the home to the Discovery

National Park you can witness at every turn the Snowy Scheme with dams and hydroelectric. There are also visitor centres at Khancoban, Cabramurra and Talbingo. To find out more about the Snowy Scheme and Snowy 2.0 visit the website at www.snowyhydro.com.au.

Jindabyne Boat Ramp Upgrade BOAT owners are advised that the Jindabyne boat ramp will be closed for a huge upgrade from late August until early November. The $400,000 upgrades were announced in February as part of the NSW Government’s Boating Now program. From Kosciuszko Road there will be a totally new entry alignment with full asphalt road an increased turning circle at the boat ramp. In addition, there will a vast amount more trailer parking area which will be a grassed area. The boat ramp is the major gateway for boats to the lake and while construction is in place boat owners are asked to use an alternative boat ramp in the Claypits area off the Barry Way roundabout. Once completed this new boat ramp will offer boat owners a much easier venue for launching their boats. The timing off the new works was the best time of year to limit any inconvenience and the works are hoped to be finished prior to the trout festival in early November. For any questions please phone council on 1300 345 345.

Fundraising for drought relief LOCAL Snowy Mountains communities have rallied to help with the drought plaquing farmers by organising fund raisers. In Adaminaby, Andrew Smith from the Snow Goose Hotel said they had decided to use their upcoming Annual Pub Ball to now be a fundraiser on October 20. Combining with the Adaminaby Bowling and Sports Club they have now arranged a day’s activities with money raised going to the drought relief.
“We just put it together and we have contacted some different campaigns so far and we will decide closer to the time where the funds go, but we just want to get people to come along on the day and help the farmers cause,” said Andrew in early August. Last year was the first Annual Pub Ball Andrew had organised at the Snow Goose and said he was hoping for a huge roll out this year. The day starts at noon at the Adaminaby

Organisers urge the community to get behind the fundraising efforts and for more details please contact either the Snow Goose Hotel (02 6454 2202) or Adaminaby Bowling & Sports Club (02 6454 2248).
JINDABYNE resident Leisa Caldwell has organised a fund-raising effort aligned with “Doing it for our Farmers” which coordinates with “Aussie Helpers”, a nonfor-profit charity. Drop off points have been set up around Jindabyne at various businesses where supporters can donate anything from money to goods. “I just got frustrated several weeks ago (July) and it appeared there was not much media attention at the time on mainstream about the drought but there was a lot of discussion on the FB groups that I am on,” said Leisa. There has been great support with the local group expected to deliver their donated goods by early September and monies will be deposited in the Aussie Helpers bank account for them to buy goods and distribute. “I will be guided by Aussie Helpers then to see where to go, hoping they will distribute welfare packs to those most needy. I understand that the Monaro is also drought declared now but I don’t believe that our local farmers are in dire
need for welfare goods at this time. They need rain or feed for livestock first.” Leisa noted that the Jindabyne Lions Club and Nugget’s Crossing have made very generous monetary donations to the fund and that they have donation buckets in several local business houses. The Commonwealth Bank in Jindabyne is also accepting donations for the Burrumbuttock Hay Runners. As Snowy Mountains Magazine went to print other towns were also showing their support with fund raising efforts. You can donate directly at aussiehelpers. org.au or look for the Doing it for our Farmers posters in local stores.

SNOWSPORTS begin another four-year Olympic cycle and at a recent NSW Institute of Sport scholarship induction night in Jindabyne, NSWIS CEO Kevin Thompson said they will be investing $100,000 annually into scholarship programs to support snow athletes. Mr Thompson was attending his first induction night at the Sport and Recreation facility, which is home to the NSWIS program. He welcomed the 18 new athletes receiving scholarships for the first time and the 32 athletes who have committed to another four-year cycle. “I hope you feel as I do that it is a privilege to be a part of this world class program,” said Mr Thompson. “At the recent Olympic and Paralympic games 38 NSWIS athletes were selected, Jarryd Hughes and Matt Graham winning silver medals and Mel Perrine winning two bronze medals at the Paralympic games. But there were also a lot of top eight finishers. Presently I am informed we have six athletes ranked in the world top five, so this is truly a world class program.” Mr Thompson congratulated all the athletes on representing their country and commented that NSWIS athletes were also seen as role models not just for the sport, but for NSW and Australia.

The NSWIS program is supported by Perisher and Thredbo resorts who provide world class facilities at their respective resorts. The programs also align with support from the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia and Ski and Snowboard Australia with their respective CEO’s in attendance on the evening along with a host of dignitaries and snowsports supporters. During the evening retiring NSWIS mogul coach Peter “Toppa” Topalovic was acknowledged for his contribution to the sport and presented with a collage of pictures of his and his athletes’ careers. Topalovic will now work in a role as NSWIS winter sports coordinator.

Electric vehicle charging station JINDABYNE has two new NRMA fastcharging electric vehicle stations after an ofďŹ cial opening in late July. Situated in the Kalkite Street carpark opposite the Jindabyne Central School, the stations offer motorists the convenience of charging their cars within 30 minutes all within proximity to cafes and amenities. The Jindabyne station is the NRMA’s third electric vehicle station location to open to the public, following stations at Sydney Olympic Park and Wallsend, as part of the company’s $10 million investment to build Australia’s largest fast charger network across NSW and the ACT. NRMA CIO Rachel Wiseman said the electric vehicle fast charger network would ensure NRMA members were prepared for the future of motoring. “As Australia’s largest membership organisation, our focus is to keep people moving and we believe we have a key role to play in leading the transition from petrol to electric vehicles,â€? Ms Wiseman said. “Our network will cover major highway routes across NSW and the ACT, ensuring that 90 per cent of electric vehicle journeys will be within 150 kilometres of a fast charger, so that motorists know they can continue their journeys without fear of
range anxiety. “While Australia’s electric vehicle market is still in its infancy, there’s no denying this is the future of motoring. Australia no longer manufactures cars locally and global manufacturers have already shifted their focus and investment to electric and hybrid technology. Deputy Premier and Member for Monaro, John Barilaro, said opening up the region to electric vehicle motorists with a fast charging station would unlock the beauty of the Snowy Mountains to even more visitors. “Tourism is the lifeblood of the Snowy Mountains region, Mr Barilaro said. “Having fast charging stations in Jindabyne will ensure the local community are at the forefront of motoring and will boost local tourism and in turn, local small businesses. This is the sort of infrastructure we are going to need, Australians love technology, they’ll embrace electric vehicles I think more so than anywhere else in the world. Two vehicles were on display at the opening, a Tesla and Hyundai. Mr Barilaro was offered a drive in the Hyundai where he also viewed the new dual lane out of Jindabyne. The Hyundai showed enormous
power as it accelerated up the Alpine Way and was virtually silent. The cost of running an electric vehicle is estimated to be at about one dollar per day with limited ongoing service required like conventional cars. The Jindabyne site has been delivered with the support of the Snowy Monaro Regional Council.

Top to Bottom Race THE iconic Thredbo Top to Bottom, Australia’s longest race was run and won for a 28th time in August with Olympians and local legends claiming the prestigious titles A record 286 competitors across eight categories raced to the finish line for their share of the $25,000 in cash and prizes. “This was one of best Top to Bottom races we have had. The weather was ideal and the snow conditions were fantastic. The course had 35 control gates, we opened it up adding longer straights giving more opportunities for overtaking making for exciting racing,” said Adam Hosie, Thredbo Snow Sport Director and Chief of Course. Olympic silver medallist snowboarder Jarryd Hughes, racing in his first top to bottom come second to last year’s winner Jye Kearney while fellow Olympian Scott Kneller used his home mountain advantage notching up his seventh win of the open men’s event. “I was sixth in the run, then hit the lead at the top and maintained it to the finish. I love this event, coming up with your friends, on the mountain before the sun rises and head to head racing on a long fresh course,
there is nothing like it,” said Kneller. In the hotly contested open women’s snowboard, local Wiki Jones was riding for her sixth victory but was pipped on the line by Jindabyne young gun boardercross rider Georgia Baff. It was a big day out for ski racer Zali Offord who not only blitzed the open women’s ski field but was also the fastest on the day across the male and female categories clocking 1:58 down the 2.5km course. “You just have to go fast, there is no pacing, you just have to go hard the whole way down,” said Zali.

Historical Society Faces of Thredbo THREDBO Historical Society held their mid-winter dinner in July where they inducted two new faces to their Hall of Fame. Albert van der Lee and Bela Racsko were both recognised for their contribution to Thredbo, with Albert proudly accepting his award from Thredbo’s Resort Operations Manager Stuart Diver. Gabrielle Rackso and daughter Alexandra accepted the award on behalf of the late Bela Rackso. Albert mentioned he had very enjoyable times in his years at Thredbo but couldn’t give one example as everything was good. In his role as manager during the Lend Lease period of ownership, Albert was instrumental in the detailed planning and implementation needed to bring to fruition the vision that Dick Dusseldorp had for Thredbo. “Yes I am very proud of it,” said Albert when asked about his input over those years. On the current developments at Thredbo Albert said it was “beautiful, I had a good walk around, a lot of new places down at Friday Flat, its grown nicely.” Albert oversaw chairlift development, the fashioning of ski runs and traverses as well as the development of the road system. He was instrumental in the modernisation of the village that emerged from a haphazard settlement to a sophisticated resort. Bela Racsko was a prolific builder since his arrival from Hungary to Thredbo in 1957. By the late 1960’s half of the sixty odd buildings bore his stamp and he has Bela’s Corner named after him. Daughter Alexandra complimented such a lovely evening and thought the recognition of her father was very well deserved. “Even though he has been dead for twenty years he would have been thrilled,” said Alexandra. “My sister and I grew up here, we were born here. building lots of lodges around the village and it was a fantastic life.” The historical society said Bela’s contribution to the physical fabric of Thredbo and the look and feel of the village was immense. He was in great demand as a designer and builder in the alpine region which was little known to local builders at the time. The night saw a huge turnout of over 150 people of past and present Thredbo residents, their families and friends. Visitors can see more of Thredbo’s history at the Thredbo Museum, just below the Village Square stairs or visit www.thredboalpinemuseum.org.au.

Record entries for Interschools Interschools continues to grow and is a stepping stone for future snow champions. WHEN over 1600 students arrive at Perisher for the Subaru Australian Interschools Snowsports Championships from September 5 – 9, it will be the culmination of a successful season for not only all the athletes, but organisers and sponsors. Over 250 schools from NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, ACT, Queensland and South Australia will be represented with students ranging from kindergarten to year 12. Organisers are expecting record entries totalling 3,350 in the nine snow sport disciplines on offer. This makes the Interschools Snowsports Championships one of the biggest sporting
events in Australia. The event just continues to grow in popularity and is an ideal introduction to the snow for some students, and to competition snowsports of others. This season has seen record regional and state championships entries for NSW, ACT and QLD schools. The Interschools has been huge for snow participation with many students competing in every year they have been at school. Executive Officer of NSW & ACT Snowsports Wendy Olsen said “Interschools is a stepping stone for further competition and we appreciate that previous Interschools athletes that went on to compete at the

At each level of competition, the courses have been suitable for entry level participants but still
challenging enough for the seasonal athletes. “A big thanks goes to the school coordinators for managing their school entries and being an important contact between the event team and their participants.” The Interschools Championships would not run without volunteer course officials with over 50-60 volunteers required per day to run the events in a safe and fair manner. This equates to over 1,400 volunteer roles over the season. “Thank you to all the volunteers who were a course official this season,” said Wendy. “On behalf of the NSW & ACT Interschools Committee, we wish all competitors competing at the Subaru Australian Interschools Snowsports Championships luck in their events.”

Jindabyne Monument for Ulick O’Boyle LIFE on the Snowy Mountains Scheme in 1960’s was an eventful time for all the workers, many who had immigrated to Australia specifically for the scheme and others who gravitated to where the work was abundant. Irishman Ulick O’Boyle was one such immigrant who arrived in Australia with his English wife Anne Rutherford (O’Boyle) and two children Kieran and Shannon. They would have three more children, Conn who passed away at four years of age in 1968, and Odilla and Grainne born in the 1970’s. Ulick worked on the Snowy Scheme for about eight years, initially as a first aid officer before becoming a concrete labourer.
During his Snowy years from the mid 1960’s he captured the life of the Snowy through song which he would sing for decades after. “He wrote over 200 songs about the camaraderie, the life, the struggles, the joy, the internationalism that was surrounded during the building of the Snowy Mountains Scheme,” said daughter Shannon. Ulick was part of The Settlers band of the time, which was formed with wife Anne Rutherford and Peter Barry. Paul Davey would take over from Barry in 1967. The Settlers first album, Songs of the Snowy Mountains, was recorded in 1966 and they would make one more album, More Songs of the Snowy Mountains before they disbanded. Ulick performed for over 30 years, keeping the same band name and playing with several different musicians up until the late 90’s. He recorded more albums, West of Cooma, Snowy Rambler, Mountain Tracks, and Kiandra and Beyond. After he passed in 2011 the family created a songbook where they had all the music professionally transcribed into proper musical notation. That book was published and launched in Cooma in 2014. “Dad couldn’t read music, so his songs were simply written on paper with guitar

chords scribbled over the words. I thought it was important to have them preserved and available in a more professional manner.” “It’s a musical history of the Snowy Mountains, that’s what I like to say about dad, his contribution to the cultural heritage.” This cultural heritage will now be recognised with a monument to Ulick O’Boyle after the family lobbied the former Snowy River Shire council for recognition, before taking it up with the new amalgamated council. “Snowy Monaro Regional Council have acknowledged the cultural and music heritage of his music and contribution was an integral part of the Snowy Scheme,” said Shannon. The monument will be placed adjacent to the Irish Harp on the Lake Jindabyne foreshore path near the Strzelecki statue. The family have paid for all associated costs to build and install the monument. It is only fitting the monument will preside over Lake Jindabyne as the family’s local history goes back to the days of the old town. “The first song he wrote and recorded in Australia was Farewell to Jindabyne, my first school was Jindabyne and we all lived there in the old presbytery,” said Shannon.

In The Chair with Grant ‘Shifty’ Turnbull
EACH edition Snowy Mountains Magazine interviews an interesting character for a quick insight to their mountain life. We put them ‘In The Chair’ and ask them questions on how it all came about. This edition we talk to Grant Turnbull who also has a run ‘Shifty’s’ named after him wide of Eyre T-Bar at Perisher. GRANT, WHERE WERE YOU BORN? I was born in Drummoyne, my father had a big milk run and during the depression my poor old dad went bust, so we packed the old car and said where do we go, and my mum said, “they tell me the Eastern Suburbs is a nice place to stay” so we turned right and went to Bondi. I have been in Bondi my whole life. HOW DID YOUY GET INTO SKIING? At the time I wasn’t interested in skiing, I was a mad surfer and bought my first surfboard in 1947. I knew a few fellas who were working at the Charlotte Pass Chalet, they were all North Bondi surf club guys. My first job was working down in the boiler room shovelling in the coal. It wasn’t a bad job but I learnt to ski, I picked it up pretty well and at the end of the season, 1959 I was skiing everywhere.
WHERE DID YOU GO AFTER CHARLOTTE PASS? In 1963 I didn’t go to the mountains, I stayed on this Swedish ship. I used to do all the coast up to Portland and into Vancouver, Honolulu. I enjoyed it, it was great down in the engine room. WHEN DID YOU WORK AT PERISHER? I came here in 64 and got a job on ski patrol with a fella called Brian Davidson and there was only two of us on ski patrol then. You could ski around and you wouldn’t see a sole. When I first came through here in 1959, Perisher wasn’t here. In 1965 I got back into the bar game in the Valley Inn (Perisher Manor). HOW DID SKI INSTRUCTING COME ABOUT THEN? That never came until really late, not til 1970. In the meantime, I was on ski patrol and then I ran the ski patrol all the way up to 69.
as well stay on and finish the season with us and teach. And I have taught all the way through from 1970 to 2011. HOW DID YOUY END UP WORKING IN AUSTRIA? I stayed down there until 1974 and then a ski instructor said we can use an Australian over there or someone who can speak English and is a good teacher, you can come to my resort. So I went to the resort of Soll.
WERE THERE INSTRUCTORS AND DID THEY GIVE YOU TIPS? They would see me out there all the time, Larry Adler was the assistant ski instructor at the time.
WHAT MADE YOU SWITCH OVER? The thing is I managed a ski lodge up here, Perisher Huette and I was there for about 32 years as manager, so I thought give the ski patrolling away and do a little bit of odd work here and there. The ski school director at the time, the ‘7ft snow goose’ we called him. He said Grant I have been watching you ski and I see how you handle people would you like to be an instructor.
HOW MANY JOBS DID YOU HAVE AT CHARLOTTE PASS? One of the guys in the bar had to leave urgently and the boss Stan McGuinn came down and I am shovelling this coal in and he said, have you got a white shirt, have you got a black tie, I am putting you in the bar.
SO THAT WAS THE BEGINNING OF A LONG CAREER? I did a little course and then I got in and starting teaching. He said what we’ll do Grant, we’ll start you off here in school YOU HAVE THE NICKNAME SHIFTY, HOW holidays and teach the kids. After that I did DID THAT COME ABOUT? pretty well, he said you done well you might Well that was put on me, a very maligned
HOW MANY YEARS WERE YOU AT SOLL? I started there in 74 and finished in about 2010 I think, every year all those years back to back, back to back, back to back. YOU MUST HAVE TAUGHT SO MANY PEOPLE? I taught James Packer to ski when he was ten years old. And his sister Gretel, she was beautiful.

name that I didn’t deserve. Johnny Gibson, I think he still lives in Jindabyne, I took one of the guy’s girls out, it was just a friendly thing, a party or something and Gibbo said “oh you’re shifty” and from then on it just stuck. HOW DID YOU GET THE RUN SHIFTY’S NAMED AFTER YOU? They said about naming a run after me and honestly it didn’t worry me, and I said who cares. But a few of the guys there said oh no we should name a run after you. I let them do all the work, I didn’t have to do anything. That was my favourite place, I used to go up the top of Eyre and head over, beautiful skiing, and no one around, great skiing. YOU DON’T SKI NOW? No, firstly my age and my body is cracking down a little bit, but when you are 89. But I am still down the surf club every day, I walk to the beach have a dive in the water and go to the RSL and have a couple of beers every day.

Mogul Matt’s Perisher have renamed a run at Blue Cow in honour of Matt Graham, our Winter Olympic silver medallist mogul skier. By Steve Cuff COLD Shoulder run at Blue Cow is now officially known as Mogul Matt’s after Perisher renamed the run in August. Mogul skier Matt Graham who earlier this year won a silver medal at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics has skied Perisher since he was three years old and spent countless days training moguls on Cold Shoulder all through his career. “It’s obviously an extreme honour and very proud to be a Perisher skier and Perisher boy and this particular run is where I learnt how to ski moguls,” said Matt. “I spent a lot of my childhood here learning and competing at interschools and all the way up through the junior comps. It’s very special and this run is very close to me in a lot of ways and we still spend a lot of time here training throughout the season. “I pretty much loved this run from the get go, all the rocks and everything you can jump off over here at Blue Cow at Mogul Matt’s is pretty awesome.” He may have attended two Winter Olympic games and won a silver medal, but Matt said he had his first taste of mogul skiing when he joined the Perisher Winter Sports Club program in 2002. “Matt is a huge role model for aspiring athletes and will always remain one of Australia’s most internationally successful skiers, and we are so pleased to name Mogul Matt’s after him,” said Peter Brulisauer, Perisher’s Chief Operating Officer. The unveiling of Mogul Matt’s happened in conjunction with the start of the NSW Junior Mogul Championship, an event designed to introduce young athletes to the next level of competition and provide a platform for junior mogul athletes to show their stuff in a fun competitive environment. A large group of junior mogul skiers, mogul supporters and members of the Graham family were on hand for the occasion.
HIRE Race ski packages Snow play packages Skis Snowboards Jackets & pants Accessories Snow chains KIDS SKI FREE with every performance rental over 3 days After the announcement and prior to the start of junior event Matt had a celebratory ski through the course, and was followed by elder brother David, himself a former representative mogul skier. His sister Eliza works as a mogul coach for Perisher Winter Sports Club. Matt said it was good to see so many kids out there enjoying the moguls and getting into the sport. “I remember being in their shoes when I was their age as a youngster and it can be somewhat daunting to be training alongside the best guys in the world. For me I just try to be as friendly as I can to all the kids and make sure if they want to come up and chat to me or want an autograph or ask a question about the sport or how to do something I want to be as helpful as I can and give back as much as I can.” This will be the second run at Perisher named after a Winter Olympic medallist, with Zali’s on the Summit Chair named after slalom skier Zali Steggall who won a bronze medal at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics in Japan. Steggall trained at Perisher and raced on the run named after her, which was formerly known as Stampede.
Added snowmaking for Toppa’s Dream PERISHER have made a huge commitment to mogul skiing by announcing they will invest a further $260,000 in snowmaking on Toppa’s Dream run at the bottom of the Ridge chair. This investment will see automated snowmaking installed on Toppa’s Dream allowing this iconic run to be open earlier each season providing a longer training period for the Australian and visiting International mogul skiing teams each winter. The run has become an institution for the world’s best mogul skiers who descend on Perisher in large

numbers to train in the Southern Hemisphere winter. Through the months of August and September you can expect to see the elite mogul skiers in the world training on the run including the Australian team. Guests riding the Ridge chair have always had a bird’s eye view of this run, which is very daunting to the skiing public but loved by the mogul community. Toppa’s Dream is also home to the Australian National Mogul Championships that will be held this year from 28-29 August.

High altitude journey FOR most people their mountain experiences extend to sliding around a favourite resort, perhaps a small hike for some powder turns and during summer the 23km Kosciuszko Main Range Track is a great all-day alpine adventure. Canberra’s Zac Zaharias has a different aspect on mountain adventures which has led him to summit Mt Everest and be involved in some unique Mt Everest experiences. Along those journeys he also mentioned he had lost three friends and in 2001 had a fellow climber die in his tent on the final leg to the world’s highest peak. On that occasion he reached 8750m, only 100m short of the summit, the death playing its part in the timing of the final ascent. A Lieutenant Colonel in the Army and a highly distinguished high-altitude climber, Zac became involved with mountaineering when he joined the army at Duntroon. “It was back then in the seventies, Everest had not been climbed by an Australian and we thought jokingly, wouldn’t it be great to go and climb Everest,” he said. “We progressively got more and more experience in New Zealand and spent five or six seasons there before going off to do a number of expeditions in the Himalayas.”
His first Everest expedition was in 1988 as part of the Australian Bicentennial. The group comprised of army representatives and civilians with three members of the 18-team summiting. He would reach within 300m of the top on that occasion via the traditional south route. This particular trip was also significant as they climbed solely within their own group. “We did it without using Sherpas. We were the only expedition ever to never use Sherpas and we carried all the ladders and ropes ourselves. We did all the hard work, an achievement never repeated anywhere in the world. It was a tough trip, absolutely brutal carrying all our gear ourselves with no support.” Patrick Cullinan, SC, OAM, a fellow army member with Zac wrote a book about the expedition called “White Sherpas”. After twice being so close to the summit, the 1988 south col and the 2001 north col via the Tibetan side, the summit was achieved. “I finally went back in 2010 on the same north route and summited with no dramas and no disasters and got up pretty easily actually, nine hours leaving from top camp.” He said he preferred the more physical

north route as “It is a much more physically demanding route”. These days he spends Australian winters working with K7 Adventures at Perisher and offers overseas trekking and mountaineering expeditions that he leads with his Peak Learning Adventures. “My real passion is the more remote treks and I really like getting off the beaten track and managing risk and the isolation of being off the beaten track. With my expertise in logistics and managing risk we can do those more adventurous trips.” He guides to Mera Peak, Nepal’s highest trekking peak and describes it as one of the most scenic vistas in the Himalayas where you can see five of the world’s highest peaks.
Another of his favourites is Kokoda to Mt Victoria in Papua New Guinea and he has his sights on taking groups to Afghanistan. Another Canberra climber Andrew Lock, Australia’s most experienced highaltitude climber and first Australian to climb all fourteen of the world’s 8000m mountains often guides with Zac on overseas expeditions. They both spend their Australian winters offering mountaineering, ice climbing, cross country guiding and skiing with K7 Adventures. If these adventures interest you, they can be contacted at www.K7adventures.com. au/guides or for overseas adventures see advertisement below.

CHALLENGE: Amy Rendell will attempt to climb Mt Everest in 2020 and the Himalayan mountains in Nepal.
MT EVEREST INFORMATION NIGHT On Monday 27 August Amy will be holding an information night where you can hear her speak about her quest, plus guest speakers and Everest legends Andrew Lock and Russell Brice will share their Everest experiences. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at Rydges Snowy Mountains or phone 02 6456 2562.
Everest summit fever
JINDABYNE’S Amy Rendell has set her sights on climbing Mt Everest in 2020. But before she sets foot on the highest mountain in the world she will be virtually starting from the beginning as a mountaineer. “I am starting from scratch and I have done a lot of trekking, I have been to Nepal before, in terms of technical mountaineering climbing there hasn’t been any. Up until now I’ve basically been working on rope skills, a lot of abseiling and rock climbing.” “The dream was always there to climb Everest I just didn’t think it would happen as soon, but obviously you’ve got to mentally prepare yourself and I am definitely mentally ready, it is just the training and peaks that you’ve got to do before that,” said Amy. In late August Amy will join an ice climbing course with noted Canberra mountaineer Andrew Lock. During the four days at Blue Lake in the Snowy Mountains, Amy will be absorbing every word from Lock who has climbed every 8000m peak in the world. They will be valuable skills as she embarks on her own mountaineering career. “I have always been fascinated with mountains, especially Everest, I am not sure where it came from, but this climb
has definitely been pushed forward due to the loss of my grandmother who raised me. She died last year to a rare cancer and since then I have been on board with Race Cancers Australia to help raise awareness for that charity.” So now her Everest campaign will start, firstly at Blue Lake and followed by a series of planned ascents and skills courses. A trip to Nepal in October will see her climb the 6189mt Island Peak (Imja Tse). Amy’s next phase has her enrolled in a 2019 advanced high-altitude mountaineering course on Mt Cook in New Zealand with experienced guide Dave McKinley. Apart from querying Lock for advice, Amy also has Russell Brice for additional guidance and mentoring. Brice is one of the most established commercial climbers on Everest, having run expeditions for 24 years with his Himalayan Experience company. “Russell is fabulous, he is definitely a mentor. When I approached him about Everest he most certainly gave me a certain number of mountains and a guideline to follow before I can be on one of his Everest expeditions. There’s definitely companies that will allow you to climb without any experience whatsoever, but with Russell being one of the best he definitely has these requirements.” In October 2019 she will return to the Himalayas with Andrew Lock to climb her first 8000m peak and in April 2020 will attempt to summit Everest, an altitude of 8848 metres. She is more than aware of the history of summit fever and how people have pushed too far to reach the top when they should have retreated. “Over the years of reading and watching documentaries I think I am mentally equipped with knowing the summit is not just there. I almost know that mountain like the back of my hand even though I have not been there. Even if you are at the bottom of the Hilary
step, it’s not just there, you’ve got a lot to overcome.” In the meantime, it is a lot of strength training and cardio to increase her VO2 capacity. Any spare time is devoted to trekking, amongst personal life with fiancé Chris and her ten-year-old son Cayden. When asked had she thought of worst case scenario consequences for family Amy said, “I don’t necessarily think of that because there’s so many things that can go wrong with everyday life. I have more chance of being killed in a car accident than I am with an expedition with Russell Brice on Everest. He doesn’t have any fatalities touch wood on his expeditions so far, that’s why he is so good.” You always think about your kids and loved ones, so you want to do it the safest way possible.” Rare Cancer Fundraising Amy said not enough people know about race cancer, so she is trying to raise awareness through her climbing. “If we can get them heard and get them noticed that is definitely when the funds will come to help.” You can also donate via the rarecaner. org.au website, just search for ‘Amy Rendell’. Go Fund Me As part of raising awareness Amy has set up a go fund me page to help her reach her Mt Everest goal. She said she will be paying for all the lead up courses and the go fund me page will be just for the Mt Everest expedition. The target is $80,000. “The reason I reach out and ask for the community to get behind me is I want people to know about race cancer,” Amy said. “If I can do that and get to the top and raise awareness for rare cancers and have people realise that it’s really in need of charity, then I think they will be quite successful. “For me to get there I need the communities help. Go to www. gofundme.com and search ‘Amy Rendell’.

EVERY season there are countless images that really define how the season is progressing. This season there has been no shortage of snow and powder days have been plentiful for those who seek the fresh snow. Here is a just a snippet of some of the best in early August that elevated the season to the next level. What all this snow means is that September is going to be another exceptional month for skiing and snowboarding. We hope you manage to venture onto the slopes yourself to see how much fun you can have in the Snowy Mountains.

New work to start in Kosciuszko National Park By Steve Cuff KOSCIUSZKO National Park is set for major works to commence this summer as part of the $27 million announcement made prior to winter by NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro. Work will start on the new $17 million Snowies Iconic Walk, completion of the lower Thredbo Valley Track (TVT) in 2019 and a new TVT extension from Dead Horse Gap in 2020 as part of a further $9.8 million. In addition to these big-ticket items there will be a new toilet block at Seamans Hut, renovation work for Cootapatamba Hut, upgrades to the walking path from Thredbo to Mt Kosciuszko and renovation on Bullocks Hut on the Thredbo River. In an exclusive interview with Snowy Mountains Magazine, Mick Pettitt, Director, Southern Ranges Branch NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service outlined the timing of the works and what visitors can expect to see. SNOWIES ICONIC WALK The new Snowies Iconic Walk is a four-year project that will see a new trail constructed from Charlotte Pass to Guthega, then proceeding to Perisher before finally finishing
at Lake Crackenback Resort. The new 24km section of trail will complement the Thredbo to Mt Kosciuszko walk and the 23 kilometre Main Range Walk and link with Charlotte Pass who have recently announced their commitment to summer as part of their $10 million tenyear plan. Work will commence initially on the Mt Lee bypass section of trail near Charlotte Pass with Mr Pettitt saying NPWS will be working on finalising the route this summer. “The reason we need to work on it over the summer is we need to undertake some flora and fauna surveys. We had done a fair amount of surveys over the last year and half, but we want to do some more to actually finalise the exact route of where it will take,” said Mr Pettitt. “Come this summer 2018-19 we will have a better-defined actual route of where we are going to go.” When discussing different aspects of the project Mr Pettitt said most of the trail is expected to be constructed with rock which would last for centuries and they would not be installing any new toilets in this new section.

EXPLORE: Kosciuszko National Park will see the start of a new Snowies Iconic Walk to rival the Main Range Track pictured here. Photos Steve Cuff.
NPWS staff have walked some of the alignments of the steep descent from Perisher to Lake Crackenback Resort and noted it will require a fair amount of work with steps being constructed. “It is actually a beautiful walk down in there as you are off areas with very little vegetation walking through quite tall forests and quite significant boulder outcrops as well, but it will be quite a steep descent to Lake Crackenback. “The advantage is people can go the other way if they feel it is too hard on the knees to go down, they can always go back up.” “Once we finalise exactly where we
are going with the route, what we need to then do is talk about the marketing opportunities and that will come as the track construction goes.” The full length of the walk from Thredbo to Kosciuszko, then to Charlotte Pass and via the new route to Guthega, Perisher and finishing in Lake Crackenback Resort would be ideally suited to day trips with stopovers. It is likely to be a three-day minimum walk or more if you take in the Main Range Track. The beauty is you are not in the wilderness for the duration, but close to accommodation services and different access points.

SCENIC: Taking in the view of the Thredbo River on a TVT bike ride.
Ŷ
ALPINE: Riding the Summit Road to Seaman’s Hut.
OUTDOOR recreation, sport and team activities are the heart-beat of regional communities. We all know that sport is incredibly important for health and wellbeing, as well as bringing people in the community together. Whether it’s fundraising for a footy trip, cooking the sausage sizzle alongside the game, or parents bracing cold mornings to get their kids to sport, members of our community always make a concerted effort to get involved. THREDBO VALLEY TRACK (TVT) The 17km TVT from Thredbo to Lake Crackenback Resort has been one of the most popular cross-country trails for mountain bikers and hikers since its inception. The track follows the Thredbo River with five bridge crossings along the route. Work has already commenced on the lower TVT from Lake Crackenback to Jindabyne. This summer the final 7-10 kilometres will be finished as part of the $9.8 million invested by the NSW Government. The exit from the national park will be within proximity to Gaden Trout Hatchery although the exact pinpoint location has not been finalised yet. This finish of the trail will include a bridge over the Thredbo River. Mr Pettitt said they’ve done all the planning works and environmental factor reviews have been undertaken for the track itself and they plan to finish construction on the lower TVT by March 2019. Riders will then be able to link up with the Hatchery Bay trail and ride all the way to Jindabyne. This trail once finished will be eligible for Epic status with the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA), which will be added incentive for more mountain bikers to visit. The following year the TVT will be extended up river from Thredbo to Dead Horse Gap. NPWS staff will take the opportunity while constructing the lower TVT to actually do the planning works, the site location and micro siting to actually enable construction to start about October or November 2019. This uphill leg is set to open for autumn 2020. “It is a very separate product we are trying to produce, importantly this track extension will be separate to the current River Walk track.” “We have recognised that one, the track (River Walk) was built for walkers in mind so it’s not under IMBA standard, so water, movement and impact of bikes on the track and bridge construction is for people.” When this trail is complete riders will have two great riding options to Jindabyne. The cross-country trail from Dead Horse Gap or take the Thredbo chairlift and ride from the top of Thredbo all the way to Jindabyne on the Thredbo Valley Track. This will be one of the best mountain bike rides in Australia. MT KOSCIUSZKO Climbing Mt Kosciuszko is a main summer attraction with a 6.5km walk each way from Eagles Nest at Thredbo to the top of Australia.
The walk is rather gentle although virtually all uphill along a dedicated path that makes for simple navigation. Or you can take the other option of walking the Summit Road from Charlotte Pass at a longer 9km each way. This summer the path from Thredbo to Kosciuszko will see some upgrades with installation of new steel mesh walkway adjacent to stairs near the top of Thredbo. National Park staff’s aim is to bypass those stairs and construct the steel mesh around the stairs allowing for good access for search and rescue and getting people off the mountain. The changes will also improve traffic flow in the busy hiking season. The bright red Cootapatamba Hut is highly visible from the route as you approach Rawson Pass from Thredbo. This summer the hut will see over $60,000 in renovation work to repair damaged timber. The hut is often buried in snow during winter months. SEAMAN’S HUT The stone hut just below Rawson Pass is like a beacon for the outdoor photographers and one of the most photographed huts in the snowies, summer and winter. You can walk via the Summit Road from Charlotte Pass or take a downhill detour from Rawson Pass if coming from Thredbo. This summer a new standalone $200,000 toilet facility will be built adjacent to the hut, not necessarily for the summer hiker but mainly for the winter backcountry visitors. Mr Pettitt said for many years they have been concerned about toileting use around the edge of the hut and they have done the planning works in terms of design and environmental review to enable them to build this toilet in the 2018-19 summer. “In winter people stay overnight in the hut and it is an emergency shelter and people have nowhere to go to the toilet.” Consciousness back country enthusiasts carry out their own waste but there are people who just bury it in the snow. Naturally when the snow melts this is not a pleasant sight. Work is expected to start after the snow has melted and will be finalised prior to winter 2019. BULLOCKS HUT Located on the Thredbo River next to the Skitube bridge, Bullocks Hut will have $35,000 invested in renovations to overcome some rising damp in the walls of the building. The hut is a popular stopping point for walkers and bike riders, plus has been a popular location for wedding photos. With a perfect location on the river with relatively easy access makes it a popular spot. Snowy Mountains Magazine - 2018 - 41
Locals across the Snowy Mountains show time and time again that community always comes first. A large part of what keeps us connected is the recreational activities we are able to enjoy together. That’s why I am proud to be part of a Government that actively supports regional communities and is injecting funds where they’re needed most – at grassroots levels. Recently we have invested record levels of funding for sports projects across the Snowy Mountains region. Of note is $27 million for new trails in Kosciuszko National Park. In addition, $9.8million will be used to extend the Thredbo Valley Track by 21km and $17 million will be used to fund the extension of the Kosciuszko Snowies Iconic Walk by 25km. This funding will inherently change our region’s tourism and truly put one of our greatest assets on the world map. The hundreds of additional jobs that will be created through this funding, not to mention the bolstering of locally-owned tourism destinations, will help our regional economy grow. I was also pleased to announce funding for other worthwhile sporting projects such as $60,000 to install access paths at John Connors Oval in Jindabyne, $120,000 for resurfacing work at Berridale Oval and a $5,600 grant for the Berridale Tennis Club. The NSW Government is also proud to fund $65,000 for new Dalgety Showground equipment and a pavilion refurbishment. Playground facilities are being updated across the region with $135,000 has been set aside for a new playground at Adaminaby and $40,000 for a new playground at Kalkite. In Jindabyne $100,000 will be used to construct fitness stations and over $19,000 for a Community Auspice Accessible Garden. Around $200,000 has been set aside for water drinking stations along sports and walking paths across the region and the NSW Ski Association will receive funds to buy life-saving defibrillators. The Snowy Mountains has a rich history of sporting excellence and these projects will ensure that facilities are up to scratch in order to encourage strong participation in the future. As always, if you identify a community asset that requires attention, please don’t hesitate to get in contact with me. monaro@parliament.nsw.gov.au www.johnbarilaro.com.au 213 Crawford St, (PO Box 998) Queanbeyan NSW 2620 Ph: 02 6299 4899 - Fax: 02 6297 9998 JohnBarilaroMP

A taste of Tumba’s finest Looking for something different in your weekend getaway, then the Tumbarumba Tastebuds on October 27-28 will fit that bill. TASTEBUDS has two main components of open gardens and wine tastings. But mixed in among this event landscape is scenic relaxing country drives to each of the locations, a colourful flower show and fine seasonal menus to excite your taste buds. OPEN GARDEN Proud owners open their manicured gardens for all to see and have timed the mid spring event to perfection with flowers and plants blooming and every blade of
grass attended to with love. Up to ten different gardens can be viewed including across the Tumbarumba region. Ellerslie in the Tooma Valley is a scenic drive down Possum Point Road and the drop in altitude will see this 1 and 3/4 acre garden weeks ahead of Tumbarumba in full bloom. Manchurian pears border each side garden and a verandah festooned with grape vines. Burraleigh just 3.5km’s outside of town is a splendid garden with features to compliment the layout. Here you might see

rosellas busily flirting and an array of colour scattered throughout the property. In town Rob-Lyn lee is a garden based on permaculture principles having a productive home orchard including cherries, apples, pomegranates and persimmons. There are several berry patches and lavender and roses offer as beautiful scent. Earth and Sole and Magenta Cottage see two intertwined gardens with a cottage style featuring hundreds of irises, roses, section gardens and engaging vistas. The silver birch pathway draws you to
the front circle garden with crab apple and roses. Asgard is located in the heart of Laurel Hill Village, and a stop at the Sugar Pines Walk is just around the corner. The annual flower show is held at the Tumbarumba Motel where growers have presented their finest for judging. The Motel also have wine tastings and the superb Elms Restaurant that should feature on your itinerary at least one night. The food here is of the highest calibre and one of the highlights of any Tumbarumba visit.

THE beauty of this weekend for wine lovers is accessing these cool climate vineyards that are not normally open to the public. In addition, you can meet the growers and owners and discuss all aspects of wine if you want to delve into their individual details. Courabyra Wines is an award-winning vineyard and is open all year round. Here you will ďŹ nd a wonderful setting with the cellar door overlooking the vineyard below and vistas across the valley. While the scenery is spectacular, the wine and cellar door are standouts. Owner Cathy Gairn has won numerous awards and their 2013 vintage won a trophy for best sparkling wine at the 2017 NSW Wine Show. Be sure to book for lunch on any day you plan to visit such is the popularity. Obesssion Wines have developed their winery immensely in the past few years with wine make Adrian Brayne attending to his vineyards and making his wine on premises. Taste at the cellar door and peer into the winery or ask Adrian for a tour. As well as tasting some of Obsession’s top-class wines, the walk along the vineyard to Braymont Gardens cafĂŠ affords stretching
views to the western side of the Snowy Mountains Main Range. Johansen Wines on the edge of town do have plans for a new cellar door, but a visit to meet owners Rob and Heather in their established tin shed has charm. The drive through the vineyard itself offers a true country style setting and admire their new labels while tasting. Tumbarumba Wines Escape have a fantastic cellar door setting with a lake and stunning views. Stroll through the vineyard entrance and settle in for lunch while tasting their chardonnay and pinot grigio. The garden and boardwalk are perfect to stretch the legs. Mount Tumbarumba Wines offer tastings of their On the Fly range in the chic Nest CafĂŠ in town on both days. Relax for lunch and meet owners Richard Cottam and Elvie Yates from one of the oldest and smallest vineyards. Ask at Nest for their Saturday night dinner options. Excelsior Peak on the Jingellic Road is only open this weekend where owner and wine maker Juliet Cullen will be happy to explain the intricacies of their vintages. They always have an excellent tasting plate of home cooked food to accompany their wines.

HOME: Big White is great for ski in ski out accommodation.
A Big White welcome By Kim Mason WHOEVER coined the term “the happiest place on earth”, could have easily been referring to Big White Ski Resort. This resort keeps us coming back year after year and it is the emphasis on family that draws us in. It’s value for money. What we spend to stay on snow in Australia for one week, we are able to enjoy a month in Big White, often heading over for school holidays. The Sundance Resort has steadfastly become our favourite home away from home, and it’s not just for the waterslide, spas, cinema room and on demand shuttle, but the friendly, helpful team looking after us and of course the kids club. Our kids have often raced out the door to the club before we have even got our snow gear off! It’s the terrain we love - Long uncrowded runs, with great variety. Often we find
ourselves enjoying a run all to ourselves, and in fresh powder! Always being one for the groomers, Big White has taught me to fall in love with tree runs and everything off-piste. There is so much fun to be had from green runs to double blacks. We are still finding new hidden gems and stashes of pow! Lift lines? What lift lines, our mountain hosts were apologising on our first visit, as we barely had time to unstrap our boards before boarding the next chair. The dining choices on the mountain make it hard to stay in for a home cooked meal. As a family we are spoilt for choice from tapas, to pub bites, to fine dining. Never a boring meal to be had! The BullWheel hot chocolates, laden with cream, marshmallows and sprinkles are just the thing to start the day! One of the most important considerations
for us is the reassurance our kids will be safe. With Ski School, Big White uses Flaiks (GPS trackers), which let us know each day what our kids got up to, and more importantly, if they have taken a wrong turn they can be easily found. Our kids love the week-long race training camps which are an awesome introduction to racing or a time to refine their race skills. Having a medical centre and doctor on the mountain adds to the surety that help is at hand. Big White isn’t just about the downhill slope action either. A day off the slopes will see our family enjoy snowshoeing, cross country skiing, snowmobile touring, ice skating, ice climbing, tubing, sleigh rides and more. We never have the kids telling us they are bored! It’s not just the regular activities on the mountain, but also the events Big White
hosts that we love like Cruz the Blues, kid’s carnival nights, Aussie/NZ welcome nights and recently The Intercontinental Cup, which has allowed our kids to experience racing in a fun environment ... and give those Canadians a run for their money! The biggest drawcard is the welcome we feel, and we are always sad to leave. This truly is our home away from home. Kim Mason is a TravelManagers’ personal travel manager with over 20 years’ experience specialising in family ski holidays and escorted family Snow Safaris to Big White.

Silver Star - The Australian connection AUSTRALIANS love to travel for overseas snow holidays and one of their all-time favourite destinations would be Silver Star Mountain Resort in Canada. Silver Star has the perfect terrain to suit all levels of skiers, the most unique village of all resorts and the Canadian dollar has always been a favourable exchange. The connection for Australians though is much deeper, with the Schumann family owning the resort. The late Desmond Schumann is synonymous with skiing in Australia, purchasing Mt Hotham in 1968 and running the Victorian resort until its sale

in 1995 to BCR Management. Mr Schumann purchased Big White in 1985 and acquired Silver Star in 2002. He passed away in 2012 at the grand age of 94. Daughter Jane Cann (Schumann) now oversees Silver Star in her role as President. Silver Star have installed a new Doppelmayr 8 seater gondola over summer and the new lift will be named “The Schumann Summit Express” in honour of Desmond Schumann who was so passionate about Silver Star and the snow industry. Like the ski resort itself, Silver Star Mountain Resort President Jane Cann is both unique and a proven performer. While there are few female owners of ski resorts in the world, Jane has over 35 years of experience in the ski industry with the last sixteen years being spent as President of Silver Star. Born in Adelaide in South Australia, she was raised in the ski industry as her father owned and ran Mt Hotham when Jane was a child. A family-run business, Schumann Resorts invested in modern chairlifts and facilities in the village and transformed Mt Hotham from a one-rope-tow ski area to a major resort.

After joining the family business, Jane was responsible for the ski rental business, resort retail and the ski school at Mt Hotham until the resort was sold in 1995. When Schumann Resorts acquired Big White Ski Resort in 1985 Jane was responsible for day-to-day operations of their ski rentals, retail and the ski school businesses. In 2002 when Silver Star was acquired Jane relocated to Silver Star as President of the resort. Since then Jane and her family have invested $75 million in upgrades for Silver Star, a significant investment. Jane said she is passionate about maintaining the charm and beauty Silver Star offers (not succumbing to over development). She has a French bulldog (named Desmond, of course!) that she shares with her partner Robert Walker. Jane’s Board of Directors are also quite

different than most other ski resorts or businesses around the world… she has more women than men on her board (70%)! This year as you are whisked out of the village in the new gondola you can relate to how the name came about. The Gondola has initially started with 21 cabins but can be expanded to a maximum of 42 and with a ride time of only 4.4 minutes ascending from the village will be easier than ever. This will allow you ski and snowboard all your favourite front side runs and access the backside for more terrain. Silver Star has an abundance of terrain that truly suits all levels. From the gentlest of green runs, a vast selection of blue groomed runs and for those seeking advanced terrain numerous black and double black diamond. For all your Silver Star travel requirements call the team at Travelplan.

Japan’s powder secrets By Glenn Cullen / The Snow Gauge WHEN it comes to skiing or snowboarding in Japan, it’s fair to say people can be a little narrow minded. Ask to pick three resorts from the land of the rising ski fields and I’d hazard to suggest the responses will be Niseko, Hakuba and Nozawa Onsen. But as powder-filled and popular as these places might be there’s plenty of epic riding beyond them. One such place is the Myoko Kogen region. For the most part this huge multi-resort area may not have all the bells and whistles of the bubble era ski resorts but what you do get is a more unfiltered Japanese cultural and snow experience that really does offer something for all-comers. WHAT IS MYOKO KOGEN? One hour north of Nagano on the main island of Honshu, Myoko Kogen is actually a series of separate ski areas that are either directly linked or (mostly) reachable by bus. The main resort is Akakura (Kanko and Onsen) which will most likely be your base. From there you can also hit the big cruisers of Suginohara, or on a powder day the must do experience at the noticeably steeper Seki Onsen. If freestyle is your thing, check out Ikenotaira Onsen. You mostly won’t get the uber dry powder of Niseko in Hokkaido but depending on the season, you may well get as much snow. It’s big, fun and varied - not the kind of place that holds your hand the entire way but all the more interesting for it. Expect to get a four-mountain pass for around $A55 a day. LOTTE ARAI IS OFF THE CHARTS New on the Myoko ticket from the 2017/18 season is Lotte Arai. Shut down and

Powder turns four days after the storm at Lotte Arai.
effectively abandoned in 2006, the place was thought to be cursed and laid dormant for the best part of the next decade. Taken over by huge multinational Arai, they refurbished the main hotel, put in some news lifts and eateries and re-opened to the public last season I must admit when I received a press release about this and looked at the trail map, I was a bit non-plussed - but skiing Lotte Arai is believing. Quite simply this place has some of the best inbounds steeps I have skied in Japan and its more coastal location generally sees greater snowfalls too (14m annually). The trail map and five-lift set-up doesn’t do this place any justice. But a 931-metre lift-serviced vertical drop hints at least at the great white expanse that lays out before you in a series of wicked alpine bowls. Four days after a storm, we were skiing long, shindeep runs with hikes of 20 minutes. Yes, it’s a little more expensive than the dirtbag places in Japan (day passes around $A70 and twin share accommodation from
north of $A250 night) but given the distinct lack of crowds you need to put this place on your Japan to-do list. AND YOU MUST CHECK OUT MADARAO Not on the Myoko ticket but close enough to add-on to your stay is Madarao. This little gem between Nozawa Onsen and Myoko has garnered a reputation as an unassuming powder-haven for Aussies. It may have just a 440m vertical drop; a little more vert than the major Australian resorts (and less than Thredbo) but is well serviced by 15 lifts, has some sensational tree skiing and a liberal back/sidecountry policy, that more than makes up for its modest proportions. To be honest a full week is probably a stretch here, but three days would be perfect. There are daily buses from Akakura/ Myoko Kogen to Madarao and another two from Nozawa Onsen for around $A20 too. GETTING THERE AND GETTING AROUND When it comes to Japan snow trips, Deep Powder Snow Holidays are the snow holiday professionals. With over 25 years’ experience and offices in Sydney and Niseko, they have that leading edge with access to the best Japanese ski resorts. Their hot tip for Japan 2019 is to travel in
spring. Managing Director, Dale Goulding says “Spring skiing is by far the most underrated season of them all. There is a huge snow base, blue bird days are more frequent, but the snow storms keep rolling through, from mid-February the crowds disperse, and accommodation is at its cheapest. Spring is my pick of seasons”. For the best possible Japan snow experience, their team of travel professionals can assist you with all things snow. They also have a trip for two that they’re giving away to Shiga Kogen and Naeba. Contact them today via ad on adjacent page and enter the competition. In Myoko (including Lotte Arai) I’d highly recommend the services of Tom Langtry and the Myoko Snowsports team. They offer English lessons, rentals and transfers services which are simply first rate. www. myokosnowsports.com And if you’re tripping around Japan there’s no better way than to use their stunningly efficient train system. Your “guide” to skiing the Italian Dolomites By Phil Doyle SNOW visitors anywhere in the world can have an enjoyable time with or without ski guiding, but for many of the larger resorts in the world many visitors go home much less the richer for not exploiting the knowledge of a guide. So imagine what it must be like to land in the spectacular Dolomites Mountains of northern Italy, the world’s largest skiing region steeped in history, culture and village atmosphere. Here you can ski through 12 valleys and 45 ski resorts on 450 ski lifts covered under one ski pass! In this region there’s skiing as far as the eye can see…in every direction. It’s
approximately 120km from one end to the other and you can ski a 35-70km circuit in a day without catching the same lift twice! It’s true, you can come to the Dolomites, grab a map of the local area and find your way around. If you have a great sense of direction you will even find your way to multiple resorts. But without a ski guide in this vast arena you won’t capture a fraction of the eye-opening bliss you deserve. That’s where Sydney-based Dolomites Ski Tours has made its mark in the ski industry – highly experienced Aussie guides showing groups of like-minded visitors all over the Dolomites. A ski guide will show you the best places to ski, the best breath-taking mountain
restaurants and coffee stops or the many 5-10km ski runs. Why fall at the last hurdle when you’ve come so far to enjoy your holiday? Pay a little extra and let Dolomites Ski Tours’ experienced guides show you just how much fun a ski holiday can be. A guide can safely lead you 40km away, regale you over a lavish-but-inexpensive mountain lunch and still have you back before last lifts. Timing is what ski guides become masters at; timing is the black art you’ll struggle to acquire when tackling the region alone. Contact Dolomites Ski Tours for more information www.dolomitesskitours.com. au or see ad on page 54.

Property Guide Snowdrift at Woodridge
Ŷ
LOCATION: Willow Bay gated community will have private access to the Lake Jindabyne waterfront.
Waterfront land in gated community JINDABYNE is set to have its first gated community at Willow Bay Estate situated between the Alpine Sands and Tyrolean Village estates. Thirteen community lots will be on sale ranging from $350,00 up to $700,000. The lot sizes are large and will vary from 3,679 square metres up to 7,592 square metres. Each lot will offer privacy and secured views all with stunning vistas of the Snowy Mountains and Lake Jindabyne. Residents will have private access to Willow Bay, with lots 7 and 8 situated directly over the Willow Bay waters. Driving access will be via Alpine Sands through a stone security entrance. The land is undulating with natural rock and sloping blocks and would be suited for more mature families with older children, or investors looking for that ultimate
holiday getaway in a stunning environment. Depending on lake levels, residents would have a short walk to access a large beach area and all the benefits of a superb summer location. On high level water the lower blocks would have the lake just below their boundary. The zoning allows for residential and short-term holiday usage and will be sold by Kosciuszko First National Real Estate in Jindabyne. Gordon Jenkinson from Kosciuszko First National said he expects that these waterfront blocks will set a new urban lot sale record in the Jindabyne area. Land sales in Jindabyne have been exceptionably strong with over 120 vacant lots sold in the last 15 months, and once on the market these blocks could be expected to move fast.
