The First Word SUNSHINE is here, the mountains are warming, the snow is melting and we are settling in for what will be a great spring and summer season ahead. November is a big month for events and the ideal opportunity to venture outdoors and soak up the crisp alpine air. See our calendar on pages 24 and 25 plus the features on the bigger events. Cooma have a host of big weekends ahead, the Motorfest at the showground will see car enthusiasts drooling over shiny chrome and immaculate paintwork, all part of the 20th anniversary of the Cooma Car Club. Everyone likes to welcome the Snowy Ride to the mountains, and November would not be the same without the roar of the bikes as they traverse the roads in all direction. The event supports such a worthy cause for children’s cancer research, so please donate. For fisherman eager to catch a prize trout and be rewarded with a prize, the Snowy Mountains Trout Festival will be in full swing for a week, with the presentations in Berridale. Good luck to all. The Australian National Busking Championships have a new date in November but still the great talent on display, so venture to the streets of Cooma and support what could be the next big music artist.
The Snowy Scheme are celebrating their 70th anniversary. The scheme has shaped the region from the outset when they started back in 1949. The achievements these workers accomplished is unbelievable, and you can relive the history at the Discovery Centre in Cooma. The Snowy Mountains as a summer destination is growing, and rightly so. There are so many fantastic individual destinations within this iconic destination. If you have visited before by all means return, surely you could not have seen it all in a week or even a month. Better still, sing the mountains praises to your friends as the Kosciuszko National Park is one big adventure playground. On a personal note, the Snowy Mountains Magazine is celebrating its 3rd birthday. We would like to thank all our supporters who have advertised during the past three years. We are honoured to help promote not only your business, but the region as a whole. May we have many more editions in the future for everyone to read. Enjoy the summer ahead.

Warby Ramps Up Speed By Steve Cuff THE quest for Dave Warby to break his father’s 40 year old world water speed record is fast becoming a reality after cracking the 400kmh barrier for the first time in his latest Tumut trial in August. Ken Warby set the 511.11kmh record in 1978 on Tumut’s Blowering Dam in his home-designed and built Spirit of Australia boat. For the past two years Dave Warby has been testing his Spirit of Australia II boat, each trial run slowly increasing speed and ironing out any technical issues as they arise. Dave has said from the outset that it would be a slow process, with small increments in speed each time. He described the recent weekend in September as really good, with the boat reaching 407kmh on the Saturday. “I didn’t expect to go much faster today (Sunday), because we’ve got to sort out a minor issue with the boat that we learnt from the difference between 230 mile per hour and just over 250,” said Dave. “But it is something we can solve and that is why we do the testing. We’ve done practice rescues today which are just as important as developing the boat, so a really good weekend. We’ve got a lot of data that
we can go back and improve on now.” During the past 12 months the crew have had rudder issues, but they now seem to be resolved. “I will probably look at the depth of the rudder and the width of it as well. The lateral movement of the boat, and the back of it - it’s starting to wag its tail a little bit decelerating. When it is coming down from speed it’s moving around a little bit, so I just want to work on that now. “The biggest problem I had is with the rudder, we have been using the rudder design that Dad had on Spirit of Australia, but it just doesn’t work on this boat, its really caused a lot of grief. I probably persisted with that longer than I should have, now we’ve developed a new style of rudder and it works really good. It is a different boat to Dad’s, its got different balance, different power, we’ve learned a lot and been valuable this week.” Ken Warby, based in Cincinnati in the United States, continually talks with his son on Skype, with Dave saying his father couldn’t be happier. “The whole idea of this is to be safe, and he is glad I am safe and he is really impressed with the way the team is going about it in increments the way he did and that’s why he is the only person

But Dave had an operation on a broken finger in October, and those plans may now be revised. The boat will trial again, most likely in the new year on a date yet to be announced. “We’re probably looking to go around 260 mile an hour (418kmh) to 280 mile an hour (450kmh) the next time we go out,” said Dave.

Longest Snow Season AFTER 136 days of skiing and snowboarding, Perisher have recorded their longest snow season in memory. Starting with early season snowfalls that kicked up another gear in late May, with 75cm of snow across four days, Perisher opened a week ahead of schedule on May 31. With the mountain operations team working around the clock, the brand new $4.2 million Leichhardt Quad Chairlift made its debut on June 6. The chair has proved to be one of the most popular during the season and is a key link to the six-seat chair planned for Mt Perisher. Another big storm in mid-July, and a huge August storm resulted in excellent conditions, the snowpack easily topping
the two-metre mark. It would peak at an incredible 228.8cm base. With prodigious snowfalls, snow enthusiasts made great use of the conditions where they were greeted to the best groomed runs, some of the best powder days in recent memory, events, Australia’s only half-pipe and their popular five terrain parks. Sensational spring skiing capped of a fantastic year, with everyone already looking forward to 2020. Guests looking to lock in the best deals for 2020 can visit www.epicaustraliapass.com.au.

“Alcheringa Sunshine” Launch THE third story picture book of the Alcheringa series by local author/ Illustrator Toni Cary, “Alcheringa Sunshine”, was launched at the Snowy Monaro Regional Library in Cooma in October. Ideal for children aged 6 to 10 years, “Alcheringa Sunshine” is a tale about summer in the Snowy Monaro, where the animal friends, along with Francine the Pyrenean Mountain dog who is the narrator of the stories, undertake a new adventure trekking to the very top of Mount Kosciuszko. Along the way the friends discover two special and ‘critically endangered’ creatures, the tiny Southern Corroboree frog known as Kozzie and a pair of Mountain Pygmy possums named Digby

Climbing for Charity THE thought of climbing 1504 stairs of the Sydney Tower Eye’s 98 floors does not faze the team of eleven firefighters from the Jindabyne Fire and Rescue NSW Station 338. On Saturday November 9, 600 firefighters including the Jindabyne team will be climbing the iconic Sydney Tower Eye to raise money and awareness for Motor Neurone Disease. They will be in full structural fire fighting ensemble, weighing an additional 20kg. As they say, “it is nothing in comparison to the challenge patients with Motor Neurone Disease face every day,” the cause for which they are climbing. Training and fundraising for the gruelling event continues in the lead up, with Captain David Farmer admitting his training consists of walking the Pallaibo walking track, from Thredbo River to Sawpit Creek, an elevation of 114m and 5.5km, with his full gear. So far this year (mid October) the team have raised over $17500, adding to the impressive total over the past three years of $65000 raised for this great cause. “We have been blown away by the generosity and support of our local businesses and community who have come out in droves to donate and attend the fundraising events,” said Matt DeWaard.
“Jindabyne 338 is currently the top fundraising team this year, which is impressive for a small town and indicative of the community spirit that lives within the Snowy Mountains. We can’t thank them all enough.” Events have included a day of coffees and brisket at Coffee Beats Drinks, BBQ’s and book sales at the local markets, a comedy night at Rydges Horizons and a fun night of bingo at the Banjo Patterson Inn. The local businesses have been the true heroes, donating days takings, offering prizes for the events and raffles, as well as the incredible assistance and support from their staff. “Climbing so many floors wearing our protective firefighting clothing is hot work. Not only does it weigh around 20kg, it’s very good at protecting us in a fire, but just as good at keeping your metabolic heat trapped inside also. Much like going for a run wrapped in plastic bags and a heavy blanket. Getting to the top is an experience and requires motivation, training and some solid effort on the day.” “We were originally drawn to the event in 2017 after a close friend and family member of one of our firefighters sadly passed away from MND. Since then, we’ve been touched

It strikes indiscriminately, at any

Tantric Hatha Yoga Training “Let your next getaway be a time for reflection, self-study and transformation” YOGA has been around for tens of thousands of years and in recent years, modern yoga has spread across the western world like a wildfire of selfinquiry. One in seven people now practice regularly. The Snowy Mountains is a wonderful destination to not only practice yoga but also embark on the next phase of your yoga life. In Jindabyne, local yoga teacher Jane Corben and fellow yogi Amy Bassett have joined forces at Jai Yoga Australia to offer training in the profound ancient science of Tantric Hatha. “The new buzzword in the yoga world of today is Tantric Hatha,” said Jane. “Tantra actually predates “The Yoga Sutra”, it’s been around for 10,000 years.” “Yogis have all heard of Tantra and there are modern day misconceptions around the term. That school of Tantra is one wild left wing that embraces external rituals.
We don’t need to go there today.” Most of us are familiar with seeing the word Hatha on yoga schedules. So, what is Tantric Hatha?? Tantra is the most technological, comprehensive, sophisticated and inclusive system of yoga in the world. It’s both a philosophy and a system of techniques that empower growth on all levels, steering us towards freedom from our fears and self-imposed limitations. Traditional yoga says energy follows thought. Tantra says thought follows energy. Purify and strengthen your vessel first in order to tame your mind. Tantric Hatha utilises structured methods of asana, breath and meditation techniques, rather than the typical gymnastic style of yoga currently on display - making it accessible to all of us. The first training starts on November 4 in Jindabyne and runs for four weeks. For those who are interested in the

full month and travelling to Jindabyne, Jane has also secured well priced accommodation for the course. The beauty of Jindabyne is not only its peaceful surrounds and alpine location, but in town you virtually commute on foot to the studio. For those who can’t make that time commitment, Jai Yoga are offering sections of the training as workshop drop in modules. Modules are History and Philosophy, Introduction to Chakras, The Yoga Sutra, Anatomy and Physiology and Teaching Methodology. This makes the teachings even more accessible to all. “Yoga trainings are not restricted to those who want to teach. Curious minds come to Yoga trainings to learn more about masterful living, the psychology of the mind, the intelligence of the heart and

most importantly, themselves,” said Jane. “Tantric Hatha is the next movement in Yoga and we have the knowledge, alongside a wealth of life experience, to guide you into a strong connection with self and soul; to mentor you into the path of a teacher; to nurture your evolution into an awakened being who has complete command over their life experience.” “When was the last time you took time out from life to fully focus on yourself, to clean up your hard drive, indulge in some self-love, learn something beautiful and set some new intentions?”

Wonder of the World CONSTRUCTION of the Snowy Scheme was recognised as one of the modern civil engineering wonders of the world. To be able to construct and complete a project never before undertaken in Australia required not only skill, planning and tens of thousands of workers, it also required engineers to be innovative, to find new and better ways of meeting the challenges of building the Scheme. The ingenuity displayed in building the power stations, high dams and drilling tunnels through mountains was, and still is, a wonder to many Australians. The most significant of the advances in construction was the development of a technique called rockbolting, a safer and cheaper alternative to concrete lining for supporting rock in tunnel walls. An individual rockbolt was usually used to pin a piece of rock to the rock wall behind it. However, a Snowy design team found that by placing rockbolts in a pattern across the roof of the tunnel or power station so one interacted with the other, they created a structural arch. As the scheme celebrate the 70th

anniversary, this is just a snippet of the magnificent history of the scheme. Every visitor to the Snowy Mountains, and resident, should take time to learn more about the scheme. The Discovery Centre in Cooma has memorabilia and a theatre showing vision of the scheme, plus there are countless books written about Snowy, all available at the Centre. Touring the mountains and Kosciuszko National Park gives you a broader view of the scheme and its components. The Snowy Scheme Museum at Adaminaby has fascinating history, Talbingo a display centre. In Khancoban a black and white Mural (pictured) which details the town’s historical involvement on the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme, has proudly been put on display in the
town centre. The Mural was commissioned to and painted by Rebecca Page, Artist/Illustrator of Ashala Creations and paid for by community raised money. The Mural depicts various workers roles on the project. Apart from the use of heavy and light machinery, many jobs were carried out by hand including very dirty jobs and dangerous jobs like working high up on power lines where very few safety mechanisms were in place. The Khancoban pondage, now quite popular as an area for water sports, is represented by the white space on the Mural with the township / camp illustrated just beyond that. Khancoban was originally built by the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Authority to house workers on the scheme. The Snowy pipeline and the powerlines

Snowy 70th Celebrations CELEBRATIONS for the Snowy Hydro 70th anniversary kicked of in mid October with a series of events in Cooma, highlighted by a huge gathering on the lawns of Snowy Hydro head office and a photo exhibition at the Cooma Library (see page 15). Such is the bond with former Snowy workers and their families, plus huge interest from the public that the mere mention of an anniversary ensures the faithful are making travel arrangements to visit from all corners of Australia. The Snowy Mountains Magazine will have a full wrap of Cooma celebrations in our following summer edition. The Snowy Scheme was such a massive project that it spanned the full width of Kosciusko National Part. During construction there were over 100,000 workers, many of whom were migrants. With such remote locations to build the scheme, townships were erected for each project, then dismantled and moved to the next township. As part of the 70th anniversary, two of the smallest towns and arguably the most scenic will partake in their town celebrations. Khancoban and Talbingo are
both situated on dams, where residents now comprise mostly of Snowy Hydro workers. Khancoban is adjacent to the Murray 1 and Murray 2 power stations and the Khancoban Pondage and is the gateway to Kosciuszko National Park from the south west. Talbingo resides on the Jounama Pondage with the Tumut 3 power station and Talbingo Dam a short scenic drive. KHANCOBAN REUNION CELEBRATION EVENT Lady Hudson Rose Garden | Saturday 26 October | 11am - 3pm The Khancoban community event will be held in the Lady Hudson Rose Garden, with former workers, their friends and families and those interested in the Snowy Scheme invited to come along and share their Snowy stories in the beautiful gardens and reunion marquee. People can bring a picnic or purchase food from local providers. There will be some chairs available - people can also bring along their chairs and picnic rugs. The rose garden was created during the construction of the Murray side of the Scheme and has been upgraded recently by the local Council. The Khancoban Public School will also be open for tours between 9-11am.

Snowy Photographic Exhibition THE Snowy Scheme dominates much of the history in the region with Cooma often described as the first multicultural town as it welcomed migrants and workers on the scheme. As part of the 70th celebrations of ‘Snowy’, the Snowy Monaro Regional Library, National Archives of Australia and Snowy Hydro opened a photographic exhibition in October at the Cooma Library. The exhibition depicts 42 different scenes of people during the Snowy Scheme era. Many of the images are just everyday working people going about their daily lives. Five women who had association during this era also had their stories told, the exhibition officially opened by Betty Mattner AM, whose husband Dick worked on the scheme. The five women comprised of Judy Costello, Betty Mattner AM, Margaret Keefe, Hazel McKenzie-Kay and Claire Neumeyer. Each woman had their own individual connection to the Snowy Scheme, many of the women living in the various townships of the day, including Tantangara, Island

Bend, Bella Vista, Cabramurra, Jindabyne and Cooma. Betty Mattners previously said in her book, “the men built the tunnels and the dams, and the women built the community.” Their story in brief along with a portrait of each are hanging at the library along with the permanent photo exhibition for all to read and admire. During the formalities, Snowy Hydro’s Kelly Palmer said, “We focus a lot on the engineering wonders of the scheme, but it’s the people who actually made the scheme.” Kelly said she was like many Snowy employees, who have a link to the past through family with her grandfather and mother both working on the scheme. Jason Van Ballegooyen from the National Archives of Australia spoke and said although he grew up in north Queensland, he knew of the scheme. “Here it seems, modern Australia was forged, in the tunnels, camps, and imposing infrastructure of the Snowy Scheme.” He said each image of the exhibition helps tell the story of the scheme, a migrant worker learning English, or the first wedding at Happy Jacks. Betty Mattner, who is 91 and has been heavily involved in the Cooma community said she loved every bit of the ten years she was involved in the Snowy camps. Margaret said it was unexpected, but she was very proud of the exhibition. “It was very remote, rugged country and access difficult. Tough times, the weather was very harsh, it rained a lot,” was how she described Bella Vista. Husband Bill who was a policeman at the camps said they were good people although “there was trouble, now and

again, but it usually sorted itself out”. Hazel McKenzie-Kay started working at Smiggin Holes as a nurse during an adventurous round the world trip from England before Snowy called. Hazel said Snowy first stationed her at Talbingo in the last of the construction areas, and she relieved other nurses in Cabramurra and Khancoban, and Cooma. “The whole thing was absolutely amazing, and the whole scheme so well thought, and we were so well covered, and we were allowed to use our initiative.” To view the exhibition, visit the Cooma Library.

Busking Street Talent Right across rural and regional New South Wales the impacts of the worst drought on record are clear as day. In my own electorate of Monaro it is no different. Driving down the Monaro Highway on the way to Cooma or the Kings Highway through to Bungendore and Braidwood – it is clear we are in need of rain. The paddocks are dry and our stock are struggling. Now more than ever it is crucial we support our local regions to ensure we all pull through this drought. Over recent weeks I have shared my concerns that it may be a decade before we see more dams built, but our farmers and our regions need help now. We need to use this crisis to cut through the red tape and build new dams quickly. It is crucial we make critical water infrastructure our priority. I am standing side by side with our farmers and our drought-affected communities to ensure the support is out there. Some of this support includes $1.8 billion for an emergency drought relief package. This package includes;
$185 million for on-farm Emergency Drought Relief Package support measures including transport cost rebates for fodder, stock and water and the waiving of annual land rates.
$36 million in funds to support rural and regional communities including mental health, sporting grants, money for pre-schools and skilled pathway opportunities.
$55 million in the Emergency Drought Relief Package for water infrastructure projects, emergency water carting, improving town drinking water, reducing water wastage and rebates for water licences.
But it is not just through the Emergency Drought Relief package that the community is seeing support. The Stronger Country Communities Fund is delivering critical local infrastructure and programs. In Monaro round three of this Fund will provide an additional $100 million, with at least $50 million dedicated to youth related projects. The State’s very first Minister for Regional Youth, Bronnie Taylor MLC, is delivering for our young people. More than 270 applications were received for the inaugural NSW Regional Youth Taskforce. This initiative will enable young people to voice their concerns and share their ideas on issues including getting a job, mental health and wellbeing, access to transport and activities in the community. We know the best way to support our youth is to listen to their ideas.
TALENTED musicians will bring the streets of Cooma alive on November 16 when the Australian National Busking Championships™ (ANBC) return for 2019. Both the Cooma regional competition and the Australian titles will all be decided on the one day with multiple free concerts. The culmination of seven regional titles will come to a head as buskers rotate through Cooma’s CBD performing for the public and the judges in what is an entertaining day of street music. All genres of music are performed from blues, country, rock, folk, classical, jazz, hip hop, R&B, and many more. Performers range from young entertainers seeking their breakthrough event to seasoned veterans who just love to perform. The quality is astounding to watch, you just require your busking guide, your walking shoes and the odd coffee or beverage, depending on venue and you could be witnessing artists who could be the next big music act. The ultimate prize is the ANBC National Grand Final which will be decided on the Saturday afternoon once the judges have submitted their scores. Founder and organiser Allan Spencer said, “there are more and more towns joining this national network of regional busking festivals. After eight years of steady growth the network now includes towns in Victoria, NSW, Queensland and South Australia”. “These events have uncovered some extraordinary talent across the country.” While artists will have their eye on the top prizes, there are also

over twenty generous cash prizes for various categories including: primary and secondary age categories, community music, best group, blues music, country music, classical music, most innovative, to name just a few. There is also the hugely popular People’s Choice Award, where the public get to vote for their favourite busker or street performer. For more information visit the Busking tent in Centennial Park where you can pick up your guide and more importantly, purchase busking dollars to help vote for your favourite artist. As well as the serious business of competing in ANBC Cooma, there will be a welcome party on the evening of Friday November 15, and an after party on the evening of Saturday November 16. To cap off a great weekend, a free Blues and Roots Music Festival

WHEN the Motorfest opens at the Cooma Showground on Saturday November 2, you know that each entry will have been polished and buffed to within an inch of its life. On display will be $10 million worth of machinery and there are no prouder owners than the folk who have rebuilt and brought back to life these magnificent older cars. With chrome glistening in the sunshine, it will be a pleasure to wander the isles and see the meticulous details and care that thousands of hours have produced. The biennial Motorfest will also coincide with the 20th anniversary of the Cooma Car Club who are hosts for the event. Club President Kel Goodman, said
the Cooma Car Club had 166 members and a key reason they have endured for 20 years is they don’t just specifically have one make or model. “We invite everything, motorbikes, cars, all sorts of things, said Kel. “The people enjoy the cars and the company, and you meet a lot of people outside of Cooma as well that just have the same interest, it is a common interest that keeps it going more than anything. There will be at least 200 entries including trucks, motorbikes and cars this year with Kel adding, “what we have found over the years, if it’s a beautiful day people from Canberra will make the run down. Kel admitted to owning eight cars himself, starting out with an FJ Holden which he fell in love with. A 4-door HJ GTS Holden is also one of his favourites. During its 20 years, the Cooma Car Club have raised money from their events and donated to local charities. You can find a full list of events on their website including the popular Mt Gladstone Hillclimb.

Fourth and Final L’Étape By Steve Cuff CYCLISTS looking to experience the alpine cycling route of L’Étape Australia will need to register for the 2019 race before it moves in 2020. The L’Étape Australia by Tour de France will run for the fourth time in the Snowy Mountains on November 30 offering cyclists the unique opportunity to ride on closed roads, with the best atmosphere outside of France.
◼ AMBASSADOR: Pro rider Amanda Spratt in 2018.
Organisers have always intended for the event to move locations, just like the Tour de France changes their route each year. After the 2019 event the L’Étape will relocate to Kiama for the following two years. L’Étape Australia event director Florent Malézieux said, “The local community of the Snowy Mountains have been fantastic and has supported the event since its inception in 2016. The 2019 L’Étape Australia is set to be the most memorable one yet. The two routes, the 170km Race and the 108km Ride will remain the same as last year, with both events starting and finishing in Jindabyne. Competitors in the Race will be eligible for the traditional Yellow, Polka Dot and White jerseys for male and female. The routes have been altered slightly in their three years, but one of the key elements of both events is the Col de Beloka climb near Dalgety. This has been the talking point from the first year, its gradient daunting to the riders who will be keen to tackle it for one final time. In 2018 organisers created a great atmosphere with Banjo Paterson Park in Jindabyne hosting the village for

registrations and presentations. This year they have improved once again with the village set to be buzzing. On Friday November 29 all the 3000 plus riders will have to register at the park. The entry point in Bay Street opposite the Jindabyne Bowling Club will be the key feature with a true sense of arrival. Then once riders finish their respective events on Saturday, they will all be directed to the village to collect their medals instead of the Town Centre. With a revamp of the village marquees, the atmosphere will be memorable for the grand finale in the Snowy Mountains. Each rider will be able to find their name on a huge banner near the entrance where they can also have a free photo taken in a simulated Tour de France setting with crowd. The traditional French game of Pétanque will also be able to be played in the park. ENTERTAINMENT On Friday registration there will be music including local schools who can allocate a singer for both days. On Saturday the local group Hit Replacements will play in the afternoon. Bright Lights ◼
CHRISTMAS lights are one of the highlights of the festive season, and Jindabyne resident John Mcloughlin will switch on his spectacular light show on Friday November 29. Visiting the lights at his Bent Street home has long been a Jindabyne tradition, with John flicking on the switch for the 27th consecutive year. Each night he talks with guests who often donate on their visit with money raised going to the Snowy Mountains Care and Early Learning Centre across the road. Last December John raised $3711.65 for the centre through donations. Centre Director Jackie Jackson said, “He is a wonderful community person and we are very grateful.” Such has been the popularity of the lights, surrounding residences in Kurrajong Street have increased their light show with displays now flashing brightly at numerous houses. John said he welcomes visitors from afar, including international travellers who are fascinated by the huge display. Such is his dedication to the annual light show, John continually spends thousands of dollars each year

Festive Day Out DRESS in your finest “Feathers, Frills and Finery” and step out at the annual Adaminaby Races on November 23. The highly popular event is not to be missed, with people travelling from afar to this picturesque country racetrack for an action-packed entertaining day. Colour is not only displayed on the jockey silks, the ladies and gents who contest the fashions in the field are immaculately dressed plus added entertainment from the groups who prefer fancy dress. The fashions on the field has categories for all ages including kids and couples, so be sure to put that extra effort into your style with dress, fascinator, hats or suits. While many arrive to try their luck at
picking the fastest horses or to extract cash from the bookies, for others it is to celebrate the end of another busy winter and enjoy the company of friends in this festive atmosphere. There is a six race program with first race at 1.30pm and one of the attractions of country races is being able to be close up and personal as the horses flash past the winning post to the celebrations of eager punters. The region has numerous country races with Tumut hosting four events across the summer including November2, December 26 and January 4 and Cooma races on December 7 which is always a popular meeting. For race goers at Adaminaby note that there are no ATM’s so bring extra cash.

The 19th Annual Snowy Ride OVER 3000 motorcycles riders will once again roar across the Snowy Mountains region for the annual Snowy Ride on Saturday November 2. The event is a huge fundraiser for the Steven Walter Children’s Cancer Foundation (SWCCF) which has raised over $8 million since its inception in 2001. While on the surface it appears to be a mass ride, which it is, behind the scenes a large team of volunteers help with arrangements for families with children suffering from cancer to visit the mountains. The goal of the week for the Snowy Hydro Family Program is for these kids and families to have fun and bring a smile to their face. With a chance to fly in a navy helicopter from Lake Crackenback Resort, day trips to Charlotte Pass plus joining in the mass ride on Saturday afternoon as passengers on the Honda Goldwings, the kids take their mind off their cancer issues for a short time and enjoy the experience.
◼◼ WELCOME: The mass ride is greeted by crowds at Thredbo.
All monies raised by SWCCF goes to childhood cancer research programs and support of children with cancer. This year will be the penultimate Snowy Ride event, with Sue Walter saying the 20th anniversary ride will be the last. “After much discussion by the SWCCF Board and significant personal deliberations, the decision has been made that the 2020 Snowy Ride will be the 20th and final Snowy Ride and SWCCF’s headquarters in Kirrawee will close in June 2021,” said Sue Walters. Sue said it had been an honour to be able to fulfil her son Steve’s final request of raising funds for childhood cancer research “so that no other child has to go through what he went through”. “In March this year, a partnership between the NSW and Federal Governments, the University of New South Wales, Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Children’s Cancer Institute was announced with funding of $608 million to create the largest childhood cancer research facility in Australia – the Comprehensive Children’s Cancer Centre in Randwick. “We are proud to announce that it will be a permanent home to the Steven Walter Laboratory. This will ensure that Steve’s legacy, which you have all played an important role in helping establish over the past 19 years, will live on in future discoveries in the search for a cure.” “On behalf of the SWCCF Board, and perhaps more importantly as Steve’s mum, I express my deepest gratitude for the time

and dedication that you have all provided to SWCCF’s mission of 100% survival for all children diagnosed with cancer. Steve would be so honoured and proud of what we have all achieved. Together we have become a formidable force in the fight against childhood cancer.” For riders who have attended in the past 18 years their support of the Snowy Ride and SWCCF cause has been tremendous. While yes it has become a tradition for most, and they enjoy riding and visiting different towns in the region, the entry fee of $60 goes straight into supporting childhood cancer research. Even if you do not ride you can still enter and support the cause, plus every entry goes into the draw to win the Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sport valued at $20,000. This year the Phillip Island Moto GP is on the weekend of October 26-27, so expect to see bikes across the region in big numbers from the 23rd of October until the 4th of November.
◼◼ CREW: A group of riders at Thredbo in 2018. The Snowy Ride culminates with a mass ride from Skitube Bullocks Flat to Thredbo at 3pm Saturday afternoon. The presentations will take place at the Alpine Bar (formerly poolside) at the Thredbo Alpine Hotel from 4pm. For all Snowy Ride details visit www.snowyride.com.au

Signature Mt Bike Ride MOUNTAIN bike riders can be excited for the summer ahead with the new lower section of the Thredbo Valley Track (TVT) now open from Lake Crackenback Resort to Gaden Trout Hatchery near Jindabyne. This signature Snowy Mountains cross country trail has been years in the making, and now with the new section open the TVT has elevated itself to the next level. With the upper and lower sections totalling 35km from Thredbo to Gaden Trout Hatchery, the track offers the mountain bike enthusiast an all-day riding experience. Add to the equation you can take the chairlift and ride from the top of
Thredbo, plus then the Hatchery Bay trail on Lake Jindabyne, you could be in the saddle for 60km in one continuous ride. The undulating upper section from Friday Flat at Thredbo to Lake Crackenback Resort caters to all levels on owing single track. The upper TVT is much easier compared to its new lower counterpart, crosses the river ďŹ ve times and allow up to three hours. While it is downhill in elevation, there are numerous climbs where the legs are tested. Lake Crackenback Resort is the halfway point and a timely place for rest, food and drink before you continue. To start your adventure on the lower TVT

follow signs from the Skitube parking area or Lake Crackenback Resort to the Skitube bridge where you cross the Thredbo River. Before you start, consider there are no exit points on the lower TVT until you reach Gaden Trout Hatchery 18km away. This challenging trail includes tight switchbacks, high berms, rocky surfaces, and steep gradients. Since it opened in early October, the trail has been popular with riders eager to test it out. All agree it is more technical with numerous rock armoured sections that require more skill. It is not suited to the novice rider. Jindabyne Trail Stewardship’s Matt Murtagh said it is a great trail but was “deďŹ nitely harder than the rest of the TVT.â€? From a riding perspective Matt said, “there is a lot going on you need to be aware of – the approaches to the platforms, and being in the right gear and the right place and trying to carry your speed and also, controlling your speed to negotiate everything.â€? When asked how difficult the lower TVT was, Sacred Ride’s Tim Davoli said, “more than I expected, some pretty tight sections that would be pretty full on for most people. Rock gardens – the odd one that you have to pedal up, which is a bit rough. But all round pretty good. Pretty even to going up and down.â€?

Riders need to be self-sufficient and should carry food, water, extra layers, bike repair supplies and a ďŹ rst aid kit as you are in a remote area. Should you require assistance there are plates on the platforms with identiďŹ cation points and latitude and longitude for reference. The trail ends at Gaden Trout Hatchery, where you can then take the bitumen access road to Kosciuszko Road. From here, cross the main road and link up with the 7km Hatchery Bay Trail, an intermediate ride back to Jindabyne. The beauty of this ride if staying in Jindabyne is you can take a shuttle to Thredbo and spend the remainder of the day riding back down. Bike Tunes for Summer
◼ TRIAL: The Hatchery Bay trail at Lake Jindabyne. PHOTOS: Steve Cuff.
TEMPERATURES are heating up in the Snowy Mountains and with a busy summer of biking ahead, now is the time to prepare your bike for the trails. As with any sport, your equipment needs to be in peak condition to extract the best results. Local bike shop Sacred Ride has been servicing Jindabyne and visiting riders for over 19 years, so we asked the crew for their mountain biking insights. New this year at Sacred Ride is a full suspension service including shocks and forks to accompany their existing workshop repairs. The team of five highly experienced mechanics will now not only be able to service your mountain bike, road bike, kids’ bike and E-bike, but can fully service your shocks and forks. Staff can now charge shocks with nitrogen, an inert gas that is not affected by temperature or altitude, allowing the rebuild of a larger variety of brands. The service includes a full overhaul of seals and bushes which was previously sent away but is now done in house. “Bike owners should have their shocks and forks checked after 50 hours for a new bike, and then every 100 to 200 hours depending on manufacturer,” said part owner Nic Davoli.
“We also recommend that you service your bike regularly, and especially before summer as trail riding does put pressure on your equipment when continually hitting bumps and rocks.” Owners Nic Davoli and Marty Whittington have both been busy during winter sourcing the best gear plus attending all the major bike trade shows to see new product. The boys understand riders want the latest equipment and have new model bikes stocked plus a full shop of accessories. Brands include Giant, Merida, Norco, Kona, GT and a new addition this year with boutique brand Yeti in store. “This summer I think there will be a lot of people looking at upgrading their bike. In this town everyone is really getting hooked on the sport and you are probably unsocial (laughs) if you don’t ride a bike.” E-bikes have also been a huge hit, both in sales and rentals. “We have been pushing hard the past few years with the E-bike, it is now a major part of our business.” Nic said there were a lot of people who had stopped riding bikes but are now getting back into riding because of the E-bike. “They allow you to venture further and with less suffering, you can see them with a big smile on their face all the time. They can

Enquire in store. This summer the Sacred Ride crew are inviting people to join their social rides and are finalising an exact schedule. If you would like to join like minded people, stop by the shop and enquire about where and how often they will ride. Plus, they have their scheduled Full Moon tours for an experience unlike any other, riding under the full moon to the top of Australia.

Cannonball Set to Fire for 7th Year THREDBO’S CANNONBALL MTB FESTIVAL RUNS FOR 5 DAYS WITH 5 EVENTS AND OFFERS A MASSIVE $100,000 PRIZE POOL. THE famous Thredbo Cannonball mountain bike festival will return for its seventh running on December 4-8, with legends, superstars and everyday riders lining up for their share of the $100k in cash and prizes. The Festival is the biggest, richest and most prestigious mountain bike event in Australia and the huge range of categories and diversity in events has made it a winning format for the world’s best, rising stars and recreational riders. “Cannonball is an amazing festival, so many events and categories, something for everyone. We don’t have many ski villages in Australia and to have one this good is amazing. I love coming to Thredbo, I was here for the first and hope to keep coming back,” said Troy Brosnan, world number two and four time Cannonball champion. With a sensational atmosphere and 22 categories in each event catering from under 13’s to the most experienced over 50’s, the Cannonball Festival is a great introduction to mountain bike competitions. For 2019 changes to the schedule will ensure a more structured event to cater for the 1000+ riders expected to descend on Thredbo. The Deity Whip Wars will become an invite only competition with the wizards of whip invited to send themselves sideways of a purpose built Whip Off jump. This year the introduction of a Mini Groms Pump Track Challenge is sure to excite the crowd as they cheer the budding stars around the berms and rollers. There is a new E-bike category in all events that will change the pace in the Osprey AllMountain Assault. The five day program is packed with
five mega gravity inspired events and along with non- stop entertainment there is something for everyone on both on the mountain and the village. The mix of events include the prestigious SRAM Australian Open Downhill, Maxxis Flow Motion Cup, Osprey All Mountain Assault, Deity Whip Wars Big Air and the RockShox Pump Track Challenge on the Village Green. Riders looking to be crowned overall king and queen of Cannonball will compete across all disciplines and accrue points from each event. The jewel in the crown of Cannonball is the SRAM Open Downhill where champion Troy Bosnan said he “can’t wait to be back this year”. As well as pedals pumping on the mountain, the village will have an awesome line up of DJ’s and live gigs to add to the adrenalin enthused alpine atmosphere. EVENT INFORMATION SRAM Australian Open Downhill | Sunday 8 December The SRAM Australian Open DH will see the best riders blast down Thredbo’s famous Cannonball Downhill where mere seconds make a huge difference to overall results. With technical sections, rocky chutes, booters, slippery roots and high speed straights, this event boasts the biggest pay day for any downhill race in Australia and is not to be missed. Maxxis Flow Motion Cup | Friday 6 and Saturday 7 December The 5km Kosciuszko Flow Trail is home to the Maxxis Flow Motion Cup, and while not overly technical, riders are aware they cannot be complacent. Cornering and pedalling ability will be paramount, and this event is ideal for those wanting to step it up in gravity racing. The Online Auction, which was live from 24 September – 1 October, attracted an overwhelming response from bidders, all wanting to secure their own piece of Thredbo history. Chair #2 attracted the highest bid at an impressive $4,005 and Akja Chair #55 was the lowest price at $1,935. In a presentation at Thredbo in October Stuart Diver, General Manager of Thredbo Resort, presented six local Snowy Mountains charities and non-for-profit organisations with $12,000 cheques as part of the $200,000 plus proceeds raised from the Merritts Chair Online Charity Auction. The remaining funds were then presented to Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation at their biggest fundraising event of the year, Radiothon at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in October. A Mountain Lifestyle WHEN photographer Randy Wieman started his Hot Shots business at Thredbo in 1988, little did he know that some 32 years later he would be still in Thredbo, camera in hand and capturing images of people to this day. That is set to change, with Randy deciding it is time to retire and sell his
business so the next chapter of Hot Shots can prosper. One he hopes will be just as successful as his version, and with the same desire and passion for the mountains. “I want continuity with Hot Shots, I am not interested in making a lot of money, I am interested in finding someone who can keep the business going that I have run for 32 years,” said Randy. “The plan is to find someone who can do the job that I can I do, someone who can ski or snowboard, can photograph and video and have some business nouse and continue on with the clients I have.” Randy said the changeover would involve him working next winter with the new business owner where he can advise and show how all facets of the business operate. How during winter, each individual week evolves plus introduce the new owner to his current clientele. Aspiring business owners would be mentored by Randy, who has a wealth of experience. During his tenor at Thredbo, Randy has not only become a legend of the village but has seen decades of changes at Thredbo. He has photographed the historic 1989 World Cup event, spent thousands of

On the business side he has photographed generations of families and understands what photos people desire. “It is has given me a lifestyle for 32 years. For someone who would like to take it on, Thredbo is growing summer and winter and for someone who is entrepreneurial and can come up with ideas and follow through, there is potential for them to have the same great lifestyle.” Randy said he had come a long way from his first year where he processed slides by hand in a toilet block in the alpine apartments. “We had a shop that was two metres by three metres for six employees in that first year.” “That’s how we started, this hadn’t been done in Thredbo before. Then we had the minilab come in and now we are fully digital.” I have a bunch of ideas, but at my age I

Snow Industry Awards
◼
Former Perisher CEO Asley Blondel
EACH year the Snowsports Industries of Australia (SIA) members attend the annual trade show at season end in Canberra. Wholesalers have their next year’s model brands to show, retailers place orders for the following year and all with a relaxed end of season vibe. As part of the event there is an awards presentation for the season best in various categories, plus in more recent year’s members of the industry who have made a significant contribution to the sport are inducted into the SIA Hall of Fame. Most retail stores would nominate representatives for respective awards, plus the all-important resort of the year. This year Falls Creek in Victoria won best resort, with Perisher winning best terrain park. A full list of awards is below. SIA HALL OF FAME The inductees into the hall of fame for 2019 were Ashley Blondel and the late Gary Rae. Ashley Blondel started out as a volunteer ski patroller at Perisher in 1980. He subsequently became a committee member of the Perisher Ski Patrol Association, later
its President and then President of the NSW Ski Patrol Association and the Australian Ski Patrol Association. He is a Life Member of Perisher Ski Patrol Association. He was also a Member of the Legal Committee of the International Ski Patrol Federation, and Chairman of the Safety Committee of the NSW Ski Association. His career in the resort industry began with his appointment in July 1994 as Administration Manager for the then Kosciusko Alpine Resorts (Perisher Smiggins). A significant change from his then career as a Barrister in Sydney. Following the merger in 1995 of Perisher Smiggins with the adjoining Australian Alpine Group (Blue Cow, Guthega, Skitube and The Station Resort), he was appointed Deputy CEO of the new Perisher Blue Ski Resort. This led him to being appointed as the NSW ski resort representative on the Kosciuszko National Park Advisory Committee. He became the CEO, and a Director of Perisher Blue in 1996. His position with Perisher Blue resulted in his appointment as a Director and later, the Chairman of the Australian Ski Areas Association. He retired as CEO of Perisher Blue in 2006 but remained a Director of the company through to 2015 when the enterprise was sold to Vail Resorts. For several years following his retirement in 2006, Ashley was appointed as the CEO of the Australian Ski Areas Association, as well as becoming a Board member and later, the President of Disabled Wintersport Australia. He is also a Life Member of Disabled Wintersport Australia. Gary Rae sadly passed away at his Berridale home in 2019 but not before he left a lasting impression on everyone he crossed paths with. Gary was an icon of the snow industry, having been involved for 30 years, firstly as owner of Sunski, and then as a cofounder for the XTM brand. The XTM brand
SIA Hall of Fame
catalogue had a fitting tribute to Gary, of which a portion is published here. He lived his life by the acronym of PIE standing for Perseverance, Integrity and Enthusiasm. He made you feel like a better person whenever you were lucky enough to interact with him (and he loved to interact). Most of us called him X and rumour has it that he let a few goals in at soccer so he was dubbed X Ray. His club mates called him Exa, later just Ex then Gaz to most of us. Many of you know him as the happy, helpful ski rep, and indeed he was the best – a benchmark for all who follow – but he was much more. A wonderful dad, a great mate and a tireless community worker for his beloved Berridale region. He did not have a mean bone in his body and saw only good in people and the world. He was uncomplicated, what you saw is what you got. A Shire boy who morphed into a High Country Cowboy, helping people and bringing sunshine into their lives and businesses. We dedicate this one to you Gaz, may your spirit and kindness live on through us and the brand that you had such a big hand in helping create for ever more…. You were like a brother from another mother to us all. Vale Gary Rae, 1956 – 2019, a good mate gone too soon.

New Face for Tourism Snowy Mountains THE board of Tourism Snowy Mountains (TSM) have appointed Luke Kneller to the role of Executive Officer. Chairman of TSM Wayne Kirkpatrick said, “We were very pleased with the calibre of the candidates the position attracted and Luke was a stand-out amongst the very strong field of twenty who applied. Luke is a Jindabyne local who has extensive and very relevant experience for his new role.” Having started in mid October, Snowy Mountains Magazine caught up with Luke in his office to quiz him about TSM’s future. Admittedly he had only been in the job briefly, but he is armed with extensive knowledge of the region and a tourism background. His previous jobs consist of work in the media department at Thredbo resort and his production company/creative agency, Rhosa, has worked with Lake Wanaka Tourism, Tourism NZ, Air New Zealand, Japan Tourism, Toyota and The North Face. The first task is developing the next steps of TSM’s Business and Marketing Plans and be responsible for their implementation. With an annual general meeting scheduled for mid December, he realises there is a lot to do. He said there has been good foundations laid in the past and that the Snowy Mountains brand is incredibly strong. He was also excited to work with such a great board, one where a representative of all key tourism related businesses in the region have a voice. “It’s testament to the work that everybody has done at TSM over the past few years to get everybody at the table and

it being a recognised Regional Tourism Organisation. I think there has been a lot of incredible work going on behind the scenes that probably a lot of locals haven’t understood. Now that we have all the big industry players at the table catching up monthly is huge. It is working with them and figuring out what is the best way forward for this area, for the locals, the businesses and for the tourists.” “I am really taking the time now to understand the landscape of everybody’s input, what people think of Tourism Snowy Mountains currently, where they want TSM to be and what they want from this area as a year round sustainable area. “A big thing for me with strategy is really getting a return on investment and building on our own database. Everything we do will be closing the loop, when we put funds into a social spend or a marketing spend, we can really follow that money along to a return.
OPEN SATURDAY & SUNDAY
LUNCH from 12pm.
“We are one of the most unique and beautiful parts of Australia and the world, and it’s really just sharing this idea and getting people to understand our passion and to visit here. “We need to be funding smart, we don’t have a massive pool of money
where we can spend millions on advertising campaigns, but what we do have is an amazing place where people are interested in and people are coming. It is about being smart and investing the money we have to get maximum return and maximum growth.

REFRESHING: Khancoban Pondage at the end of the Alpine Way drive.
Scenic Alpine Drive KHANCOBAN may be a smaller town on the western side of the mountains, but what it may lack in population is more than made up for when it comes to charm, scenery and a peaceful location. And are these points not what we all want a piece of in life. When the Snowy Scheme was being built the Alpine Way was not more than a dirt access road for workers to access the locations deep into Kosciuszko National Park. Now it is one of the most scenic drives in the mountains. Travelling from Jindabyne or Thredbo, it is a comfortable return day trip, each leg just over two hours’ drive, and the glistening waters of Khancoban Pondage your pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Scammel’s Spur Lookout, Tom Groggin and Geehi camping grounds are all worth a stop on the journey, a drive through each campground sure to divulge tents and caravans tucked in between vantage points to the rivers. The lookout at Scammel’s Spur offers a grand view of the western side of the
mountains. These rugged valleys are where surveyors trekked to find locations for the huge pipes to be laid for the Murray 1 Power Station. The water diverted from the southern Snowy complex of rivers and dams will reside in Khancoban Pondage, forming a great summer destination lake. The town has a National Parks office, Lakeside Caravan Park, Khancoban Roadhouse for petrol and café and the Khancoban Alpine Inn situated on the Alpine Way. A short diversion brings you into the small Town Centre where you will find a café, chemist and a post office that stocks souvenirs and gifts. For an added reward if you have taken the day drive from either Jindabyne, Thredbo or the scenic Snowy Valleys Way from Tumbarumba is a stop at the Alpine Inn for lunch. With a vast front lawn ideal for the kids to stretch out, a cold Kosciuszko Pale Ale on tap and great pub food, you can relax and absorb some of that charm, scenery and peacefulness first hand.
The Snowy Valleys region is fast becoming the leading produce area of the region. Batlow have the best cherries and apples, Tumbarumba the wineries and recently the Tumut Region Producers and Makers Coop have formed. Sarah Kynaston said they first started talking about it four years ago, so it has been brewing for a long time. The concept came about as a result of fluctuating success of Tumut Farmer’s market which was affected by hot weather, wet weather, seasonal lulls, and only limited hours restricting the customer base. The coop now has a shop front in the beautiful Learmont Drapers building with Sarah adding, “there is a lot of buzz about the whole thing across the community.” “It’s a 1920’s glass fronted traditional Australia store with polished floors and
pressed tin ceilings, it’s just beautiful and has the original wooden counters. It is right slap bang in the middle of the shopping area.” They are hopeful of having upwards of 20 stalls where producers would stock their goods. Just like any other market, purchasers pick their goods and proceed to the checkout. Members will be producers and makers from Snowy Valleys Council and Cootamundra-Gundagai Council areas, but they will consider others from outside of the area if they provide product not available locally. Products including berries, jams, lamb, eggs, bread, apples, woollen yarns and products knitted from it, vegetables, mushrooms (oyster and shiitake) and quilting are available. For more information follow their Facebook page at Tumut Region Producers & Makers Coop.

Tumbarumba Adventures DRIVE through the main street of Tumbarumba and it may appear to be a very quiet country town, but on its peripheral there lies a wealth of hidden secrets that await the adventurous traveller. As the social media platform Instagram continues to grow, so has the Sugar Pines walk near Laurel Hill grown in stature. It seems that everybody wants a piece of this short but stunning walk. One where with creative angles or wide angles lenses, nothing is out of the spectrum when it comes to creativity. Weddings have been photographed there, kids run through the narrow gaps of tall aspiring pines, and those with extra time have erected their own timber tee-pee creations possibly to just amuse themselves. A 20 minuet drive north of Tumbarumba or a shorter 14 minutes from Australia’s

apple capital of Batlow, you can immerse yourself in tall timber to your hearts content. For photographers, early morning and later afternoon permit rays of sunshine streaming into the forest for images to be adored by your followers. Scenic locations like Mannus Lake are idyllic for a picnic, Paddys River Falls has a spectacular plundering waterfall that is in full flow during spring. The Hume and Hovel track, a lengthy hike at its total offers numerous shorter sections from the Henry Angel track head, close to Paddys River campground. The visitor centre in town has more information on attractions. Once you have expended your energy exploring, it is time to relax at the wonderful award-winning wineries where the scenery alone is a relaxant, let alone a few glasses of their finest in the afternoon sunshine. Courabyra Wines have an additional decking area this summer that allows for more outside seating, the place to be for a superb luncheon with friends as your mind wanders to the vineyard below. Vigneron Cathy Gairn does not only meticulously cultivate her grapes during season but hands on at the cellar door each day both serving and offering guests information about her wine and exquisite food. The cellar door has continued to acquire accolades, winning the best cellar door by Gourmet Wine Traveller in three of the past six years, their sparkling wine continues to be a sought-after bottle after NSW wine awards in 2015 and 2017 plus readers’ choice awards. For guests looking for the ultimate getaway, Courabyra and Obsession Wines have joined with Truenorth Helicopters from Tumut where you can fly in for a winery tour and sampling at Obsession, then take another short flight to Courabyra for lunch before a scenic flight back to Tumut.

Tumbarumba Tradition for 75th Rodeo By Steve Cuff WHEN the chutes open at the 2020 New Year’s Day Tumbarumba Rodeo, it wont only be the cowboys receiving the accolades. The townsfolk of Tumbarumba will all be celebrating their rodeo as they have done for the past 75 years. It is this long standing tradition of community support for the rodeo that is key to ensuring it has remained one of the best pro rodeos. Plus, having some of the best home-grown riders on the circuit. In 2017 the Tumbarumba Rodeo Committee was inducted into the Australian Professional Rodeo Association (APRA) Hall of Fame for being the longest running affiliated rodeo in NSW and the third oldest rodeo in Australia. In their 75 year history Tumbarumba have produced countless local and Australian champions, many of whom are detailed in a new Tumbarumba Rodeo book being launched in late November. As part of the celebrations there will be a reunion on New Year’s Eve held at Tumbarumba Showground from 11am where old memorabilia will be on display, slide shows, plus you can purchase the book as you join in the festivities.
The Tumbarumba Rodeo community spirit was evident when Snowy Mountains Magazine spoke with a few stalwarts before a committee meeting at the Union Hotel in September. When asked how many people were on the committee, we were surprised to hear “about 34.” It seems once you have been involved, or have retired from competing, there is a lifelong desire to continue the support for the town’s premier day. Former President Paul Doughty said he rode for about ten years, and when asked what he preferred riding he said, “Pretty average on both, the broncs I would say. I used to get on the barebacks, we would go in everything. Wild horse race, steer, whatever.” With his riding days behind him, Paul devoted 41 years as a pick up man. “Started in 1973 and finished in 2014.” Tumbarumba have always had champions and people involved for decades. Current President Tim O’Brien reinforced a key reason the rodeo has survived as one of the best “is the strong committee we have.” “The town really gets behind the rodeo and tradition and probably the fact we have always had competitors. So, it gives you someone to follow,” said Tim. “From the very early days, Ron Boardman,

he was the first Chairman of ARRA, which it was then, and he was one of the blokes that helped start the Tumba Rodeo.” Colin “Dennis” Lavis has lived here all his life and said in years gone by attendance has always been great. “Way back years ago, we used to have big crowds when we used to use the whole big arena down there. Packed all the way around. Sometimes hard to judge the people, until they tally up at the gate. I remember years ago, they put two extra trains on to bring people up from Wagga way,” said Dennis. In an excerpt from the new book, it states the first Rodeo held in 1945 was a huge success with a crowd of 3,000 people attending. Over the years crowds of over 10,000 have attended, and the committee has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Tumbarumba Hospital. It has
also provided local organisations with the opportunity to fundraise for their clubs. Some years up to 200 volunteers generously give their time to ensure the Rodeo runs smoothly. The Tumbarumba Showground is a picture-perfect arena for the rodeo, with big elm trees casting their limbs for extended shade for the faithful to cheer on the cowboys. An extra big cheer is reserved for one of their own. Local riders will once again jump out of the chute and try for the magical eight second ride on the first day in 2020. The Tumbarumba Rodeo is a great family day out with kids loving the sideshow alley and stalls offering more than just the entertainment of cowboys hitting the dirt. BRAND: Harald Tietze and Sam Hughes at the Mountain Made announcement.
Mountain Maid in Batlow THE name Mountain Maid was significant in Batlow and was used as the trading name of the Batlow fruit Cooperative from the 1930’s until it’s closure in 2002. Mountain Maid closed after some years in receivership, but at its peak approximately 400 people worked their either full time or casually. The steel frame of the WWII Lend Lease–constructed building was used in the production of food for the allied troops and is still visible today. Just recently the brand name became available again and was snapped up by Batlow locals Harald Tietze and Sam Hughes. They have been able to secure the lapsed brand name as it was inactive. They are now offering local producers the
opportunity of placing the brand name on their products and produce to identify they are grown and produced in the Batlow area. Member for Wagga Wagga, Dr Joe McGirr MP, along with dignitaries and Snowy Valley and Batlow businesses officially launched the new Mountain Maid logo name in September. Batlow is a significant fruit producer, supplying 10% of the Australian apple market and sought-after cherries during the cherry season starting in December. It is also home to popular Ciderfest event in May and some of the best apple cider. The Batlow Road from Tumut to Batlow has several roadside cellar doors where the general public can stop and by fruit and produce direct from the growers.
THIS New Year’s Eve the Tumbarumba community will come together from 11am for a rodeo reunion and to celebrate their new 75th anniversary book. It will be a day of celebrating old times, with memorabilia, slide shows and a light lunch available at the Tumbarumba Showground before the following day’s rodeo. The book contains details from the beginning in 1945, through each decade and points out key years that shaped today’s event and the people who were instrumental in establishing Tumbarumba as a rodeo force. Excerpts from the book include, in 1946 Jack Bradley, Ossie Cottam snr, Royce O’Shea and Stan McKay were permitted to spend 50 pounds in order to purchase up to 20 rodeo horses to start the Tumba Rodeo string, which are still in existence today. In 1986 cowboy Danny McGuire won the bulldogging event in a new Australian time of 2.8 seconds on the Tumbarumba showground arena. This Australian record still stands today. Numerous mentions also for the
Pierce family, legendary Johnny Pierce who won the All-round Australian Champion in 1946 and the Australian Bareback Champion in 1947, and his son Jimmy who shared first place of the World Bull Riding Championship in 1979. Everyone is invited to attend in what will be a great day for the town as they reflect on the history of their rodeo.

Early Season Fly Fishing By Murray Ogilvie
and learn more river craft. If you have not heard, NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) scientists have found a way to count migratory spawning trout in our alpine rivers. And the good news is they will now monitor four streams across the Jindabyne and Eucumbene catchment with a VAKI River watcher, which uses infrared technology to measure, scan and automatically count fish. It also triggers a video recording to allow species identification. The VAKi river watcher has been running in the Eucumbene catchment since July 2019 with DPI saying over 500 brown trout passed through the counter including a monster fish of over 90cm. Anglers can follow live updates on fish moving through the counter at www. riverwatcherdaily.is/Rivers. Select Australia from the homepage and you will see Eucumbene River. You can view the Riverwatcher video situated in the upper Eucumbene catchment on Swamp Creek. This Riverwatcher is part of the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries monitoring program of the Snowy Lakes trout fishery. This program
NOW that the rivers are open and the fly fishing season has started, it’s time to think about where and how to fish. Recent warm weather has seen great run off from the snow melt, so the mountain streams are expected to fish well. It was a big snow year so rivers will be flowing strong during spring and into early summer. Techniques for finding fish vary, from nymphing and swinging wets in bigger streams to fishing a dry fly with a dropper in the smaller streams. Heavy nymphs are a must to get down to fish that are feeding on the bottom plus add a small unweighted nymph behind it to improve your catch rate. Indicators also help with detecting a fish and should be adjusted to the depth of the water. High Country Fly Fishing can help you with all the information you need to successfully fish the rivers and streams. With the Thredbo River closest to our shop, we have great knowledge of that waterway and access is easy if you are based in the Jindabyne area and require guiding or need to improve your technique

Fishing Report With
Brian Burns
◼
CATCH: A recent catch in Lake Jindabyne. PHOTO: Brian Burns.
THE lake edges have been fishing well so far during spring with some good brown trout and a few Atlantic salmon being caught on lures and bait fishing. We are now well in to “polaroiding season” when it is possible to spot feeding trout in close to the edges of the lake from any high vantage point on those clear blue sky days. The best fishing methods are small to medium hard body suspending or floating lures that are less likely to get snagged on the structure that the trout like to habituate. Large wet flies can also get results, woolly buggers, black matukus and goldfish patterns have all produced fish recently. For the boat trollers, you can’t go past Tassie Devils in black and gold patterns trolled between four and six meters or within two meters of the lake bottom early morning and late afternoon. If you haven’t tried assist hooks behind your favourite Tassie instead of a treble hook, give it a go. They do less damage to the fish if you
want to catch and release and when you get hooked up you stay hooked up. I recently tried out a new lure from Rapala with great results, it is the Shadow Rap Jack Deep in a Live Rainbow Trout pattern. It gave results both trolling and casting from the boat at rocky structure. It has a very fast vibrating action and runs quite deep, four to five meters when trolling, well worth a try. The rivers and streams re-opened on the October long weekend so pack the waders and fly rods and enjoy the warmer weather. We have everything you will need in the shop for sale and hire at the Snowline Centre, opposite the Thredbo turnoff.

Property Guide
Alpine Way Retreat IT is rare such an ideal property presents itself to the market, but “Ashfield” on the Alpine Way just out of Jindabyne could be your ideal retreat. Comprising approximately 80ha (200 acres) of undulating granite country in the tightly held Crackenback Valley locality, the property has direct frontage to the Alpine Way for easy access plus multiple extras. The property comes complete with a habitable three bedroom ‘heritage listed’ cottage, a 4-bay machinery shed and a producing Truffle Orchard with 800 Oak trees. With truffles in high demand you can have an immediate income stream. Phone and power are available, and the heritage listing could provide some additional commercial opportunities (subject to council approval). With Wollondibby Creek frontage and a bore, 3.42ha crown leasehold land, six paddocks (all with water) and 3 dams the property is virtually self-sufficient for water. The rural E3 – Environmental Management zoning allows for detached dual occupancy and the setting offers several potential house sites most with lake or snowy mountain views. With possibilities of Eco tourism, bed and breakfast or farm stay, the property could be developed further. Located 30km from Thredbo Village, 6km from the centre of Jindabyne and minutes from Wild Brumby Distillery and the Crackenback Valley tourism precinct,
the property is close to all the amenities the Snowy Mountains has to offer including fishing, snow sports, mountain biking, hiking and sailing to name but a few. The property is listed for $1,600,000 through Kousciusko First National Real Estate. For further information and to arrange a viewing, contact agent Gordon Jenkinson on 0427 100 915.
◼ LOCATION: The Ashfield property house, the orchard in snow, a big truffle and water is plentiful.
Thank You Leesville Laundry would like to thank our loyal customers for all their support over recent months after the fire at our business premises. As you can understand, this has been a very difficult time for all our families and staff. We would like to thank the local community for all their offers of help and support, and all the essential services involved with the fire. A big thank you to the Jindabyne and alpine communities.
