2019

The First Word WHEN we look back on the 2020 snow season, we are sure to view it very differently to a normal season. For the snow season to proceed at all, all the Australian snow resorts joined forces under the Australian Ski Areas Association (ASSA) banner and worked furiously in the background to be compliant with health authority directives to reduce capacity. The strong cases the ASSA have presented to state governments have allowed the season to open in late June but with numerous changes to individual resort operations and ticket structure. With the COVID-19 situation changing continuously over recent months, there was some doubt as to whether the snow season could actually proceed in any form. In this edition we have been mindful to offer the best advice we can in an ever-changing environment. But please understand, depending on when you may be reading this edition, who will know what further revisions to the whole covid situation may have occurred, or even restrictions eased. Not everyone has been approving of the amendments their preferred resort has made to their operations. Some people

have been downright angered, which is understandable if you have booked your holiday prior to the coronavirus interrupting your plans and you have missed out. But others have appeared quite selfish in their demands they be give preference over others when they actually had more flexibility in their plans. With reduced numbers allowable, the school holidays for example were always going to result in guests missing out on their snow holiday. The demand simply outweighing available number capacity to comply with regulations. But let us be clear, the alternative staring at us prior to June was no snow season at all. The world pandemic has changed our life in 2020 and disrupted how we go about daily life and how we like to enjoy our winter season. But it is only an interruption, and who knows, maybe August or even September will be much different. Look back at the NSW Government saying regional travel would not happen until June 29, then it was lifted on June 1. They said in April and May that pubs and clubs “may” not open until September. Yet they are open in June.

The Snowy Mountains Magazine would like to sincerely thank all our loyal advertisers who have continued to support the publication over many years. Like other small businesses, we were unsure of the exact future in recent times, and more so when we might publish our next edition. But thanks to the ongoing support from businesses across the region we have been able to publish earlier than expected after our forced adjournment. We are always proud to promote the Snowy Mountains and provide our readers the information they deserve for their mountain holiday.

SNOW: Let there be great snowfalls this winter like this image of Thredbo last season. PHOTO: Thredbo Resort. Yes, it certainly does not suit everyone, but the key is to adjust and take advantage as restrictions change going forward.

Essential Planning Guide for 2020 Snow VISITORS looking to ski and snowboard this winter or just visit the snow will need to plan ahead. In any other year you could simply arrive, purchase a day ticket, and enjoy your day on the mountain. But to keep the community and visitors COVID-safe there are changes this season. You must pre purchase tickets for the resorts in advance to be assured you have access as there are capacity restraints. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the resorts need to monitor how many people visit the resorts each day to comply with current regulations. Here is a simple guide of the procedure you should take to ensure you are not disappointed when you arrive. 1 - SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING If you intend to ski or snowboard you must pre purchase a lift ticket well in advance. There are no day tickets available at the window. Visit your preferred resort website for latest details. 2 - ACCOMMODATION For skiing and snowboarding, there is no point having the accommodation first if you then cannot access the mountain, so once you are assured you have lift tickets, then consider your accommodation.

safety and know how many participants are withing the area. Guests are also recommended to book with licenced operators for these activities for further safety measures. You can download Trip Intention Forms. www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/tripintention-form 6 - ROADS AND ACCESS NPWS will not be stopping cars to check for valid day tickets or TIF forms, but compliance officers will be checking cars as usual for valid national park entry passes. When staff interact with guests partaking in activities outside resorts, they will ask for your appropriate Trip Intention Form.

PLAN: Visitors should plan for a snow holiday. PHOTO: Perisher Resort

3 - NO TOBOGGANING ALLOWED If your sole intention is to visit with the family and try tobogganing, it is NOT available this season at any snow resort area within the Kosciuszko National Park. Additionally, the Perisher Snow Tube park will not operate for the 2020 season. 4 - SNOW PLAY National Parks and Wildlife have stated to help the resorts manage numbers people are urged not to go to the resort areas for

snow play. Outside of the snow resort areas snow play is permittable and should be undertaken safely. 5 - BACKCOUNTRY, CROSS COUNTRY AND SNOWSHOEING To participate in backcountry skiing or snowboarding, cross country skiing and snowshoeing within Kosciuszko National Park, you must fill in and carry a Trip Intention Form (TIF). Authorities are requiring this form to manage health and

Selwyn Snow Resort Update DURING the January bushďŹ res, the northern most alpine resort in Australia, Selwyn Snow Resort, was destroyed enforcing the company to announce it would not be able to operate for the 2020 winter season. More updates will be released during our winter, but Selwyn have committed to rebuilding the resort and demolition work is currently underway. Andrew Dunkerley, General Manager of Operations recently said, “As far as making it bigger and better, it’s probably the opportunity to iron out a few of those kinks the resort had - where it didn’t ow as well, such as having ski hire where it was.â€? “We want to develop something that is going to ow a lot better and suit the century that we are in - being 2020, a lot of technological advancements have come since Selwyn was initially built.â€? The initial assessment shows that the lifting infrastructure has gone relatively undamaged. The top of New Chum has been damaged including the motor and

housing burnt out. Full inspections by engineers are underway and advice will be ongoing. State Government and National Parks have been involved in the conversation and they are supportive of the rebuild given Selwyn is a big part of the snow community and local towns such as Adaminaby, Tumut, Talbingo and Tumbarumba. The impact of losing a winter season has been taken on by John Barilaro MP and his team and they are looking at how they can help the surrounding communities through this period. Permanent staff have all stayed on to assist with the planning and rebuild process. They are essential to this process and the plan is to have the workshop up and running ďŹ rst. Seasonal staff with return contracts have been offered positions at Charlotte Pass Snow Resort for 2020. Selwyn Season Pass holders will be offered the ability to transfer their season pass at sister resort Charlotte Pass at no

additional cost or alternatively receive a full refund on any payments made to date. The town of Adaminaby and many of its smaller businesses will be affected including the ski hires who relied on the snow visitor renting equipment to supplement their year round income. Many of the accommodation houses will notice the loss in revenue, although at present Snowy Hydro have committed to securing a big portion of beds for their Snowy 2.0 staff. During the same January bushďŹ res, the township of Cabramurra suffered extensive damage with 36 houses lost.

These same houses were being occupied by Snowy 2.0 staff who have been working at nearby Lobs Hole. When news of Selywn’s predicament was publicised, it was encouraging to see the outpouring from the snow community who had visited the resort in past years. We are sure they will all revisit once the resort opens again.

Covid Testing in Jindabyne and Cooma THE COVID-19 situation is not over and there are concerns across the snow communities regarding increased crowds for the winter, and the possibility of COVID-19 cases developing. It is especially important each person abide by all health guidelines to ensure communities remain safe and it is the responsibility of the individual to take precautions to not only stay safe, but protect others. Washing hands regularly and using sanitisers often where available at venues is considered good practice. Guests who may be feeling unwell at their home are urged not to visit the mountains this winter. Everyone is advised to download the Australian Government COVID-19 app. Social distancing will be enforced across the winter season at venues and resorts to suit the current regulations. The NSW Police have the power to enforce restrictions and social distancing rules designed to limit the spread of coronavirus in Australia and have indicated they will have a strong presence during winter. There are COVID-19 testing clinics including Cooma Hospital and now Jindabyne.

COOMA HOSPITAL Cooma has a dedicated testing area, along with a temporary inpatient space to manage patients requiring admission. Free COVID-19 testing is available on site 9am to 5pm, 7 days per week. If you think you may be experiencing symptoms (even outside of these hours), please call 1800 999 880 (option 1) prior to attending to talk to a registered nurse. JINDABYNE DRIVE THRU TESTING CLINIC In Jindabyne a free drive thru COVID-19 testing clinic opened on June 24. The testing clinic will operate seven days per week at the old Community Health Building in Bent St, Jindabyne. This testing clinic is by appointment only. To book your free test call Southern NSW helpline on 1800 999 880 (option 1). People who arrive without a booking will be turned away. In addition, with Stage One of the Cooma Hospital redevelopment now complete, the hospital has capacity to operate two emergency department spaces during the winter snow season. This will allow patients at high risk of COVID-19 to be managed separately

to those at low risk. Screening is also occurring for all staff and visitors before entry to the facility. Decisions on patient care for a COVID-19 positive case and the appropriate location for treatment are made on a case-by-case basis. For those who test positive for the virus, the Public Health Unit will conduct a health and well-being assessment, and the person may be requested to selfisolate at home. Southern NSW Local Health District offers a virtual care service to help monitor their health during isolation, and if necessary, may notify the local hospital if a person requires a higher level of care. THREDBO MEDICAL CENTRE The medical centre has relocated to the old gymnasium at the Thredbo Leisure Centre due to no isolating room and distancing capabilities at its previous facility. For any on mountain injuries, ski patrol will now transport people from the mountain to the leisure centre. PERISHER MEDICAL CENTRE The Perisher Medical Centre operates out of the Skitube building at Perisher Valley. They will have an additional

staging area, waiting room, opposite the Perisher pharmacy to the left of Aldos. JINDABYNE MEDICAL OPTIONS There are two medical centres in Jindabyne, see page 49 for contact details in business listing and contact for further information. Local doctor, Mike Williamson, said he personally does not have any concerns for covid in winter. “We have had six here in the surgery in Jindabyne and they have all been well behaved, I have no real concerns as long as everyone does as they’re told.” Rumours of covid cases shutting down the whole area and resorts are not true. Each case will be dealt with on an individual basis. Should cases be detected NSW Health will commence tracing and notify people to self-isolate. “The NSW Health uses national guidelines to follow up every case of COVID-19. Our efforts to trace contacts of confirmed cases has been highly successful. The ability of swift contact tracing is important in slowing the spread of COVID-19,” said a Southern NSW Local Health District spokesperson. www.health.gov.au

Upgrade for Gaden Trout Hachery THE Gaden Trout Hatchery in Jindabyne will receive a significant investment of $3.3 million dollars to revitalise the educational centre and tourist attraction. The Deputy Premier and Member for Monaro John Barilaro announced the news in May saying it will help boost tourism and jobs after a challenging start to 2020. The investment will be sourced from the $300 million Regional Growth Environment and Tourism Fund, part of the NSW Government’s commitment to the delivery of infrastructure projects that improve the productivity and competitiveness of the state under Restart NSW. The project will deliver the infrastructure required for a modern nature-based tourism hub such as a new educational facility with an office, meal room, toilets, carpark and integration of the Thredbo Valley Track (TVT) into the hatchery picnic area. Since the TVT extension has opened, the Gaden precinct has become very popular and is an ideal picnic spot on the banks of the Thredbo River. “The new education centre will build on the success that the existing trout fishing industry in this part of the state is known so

Valley Track biking and walking trail into the hatchery picnic area will entice bike riders and hikers to visit the educational centre during their next jaunt on the mountain. “During the warmer months, riders and walkers will be able to stop by, have a bite to eat and learn a little bit about the other great activities they can enjoy while they are visiting the area,” Cr Beer said. The Gaden Trout Hatchery is an essential breeding ground for trout, which are then

released back into the local waterways to stock rivers and lakes. In a recent NSW DPI Fisheries online information meeting regarding the Snowy Mountains trout fishery research update, attendees were informed of the recent research by Fisheries Scientist, Dr Nathan Miles, and analysis from Senior Fisheries Manager Inland, Cameron Westaway and Gaden Trout Hatchery Manager, Mitch Elkins. Fisheries have been monitoring data across the region and implementing measures to improve the fish stocks, all good news for anglers. While there are still some concerns on a decrease of rainbow trout in the rivers, there had been great sightings of large brown trout via fishery cameras set up in various waterways. “Just as an overview with Jindabyne, we have at least 16,000 fish within the 20-70cm size categories,” said Dr Nathan Miles. The department have also been operating hydroacoustic surveys which are maps of fish, plus have more documentation of the studies. All information for anglers is available on the DPI website. www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fishing/ recreational/fresh-rec-fish-research

Snowy 2.0 Forging Ahead and Creating Jobs By STEVE CUFF THE Snowy 2.0 project has taken significant steps for its next phase with Snowy Hydro receiving two key planning and environmental approvals from the NSW Government for the Cooma Segment Factory at Polo Flat and the Snowy 2.0 Main Works. Snowy Hydro now awaits the Federal Government approval on the main works. The $55 million factory in Cooma will create 30 jobs during construction. It is expected to be operational by end of year, will create 125 operational jobs and produce 130,000 segments that make up the concrete rings that will line the 27km Snowy 2.0 tunnel. Exploratory works have continued at the Lobs Hole site near Cabramurra, with works progress on the construction of permanent bridges, main access tunnel portal works and temporary accommodation camps. At present 300 people have been working onsite. “As Snowy 2.0 continues to progress, even more jobs and business opportunities will be created across the region’” said Snowy Hydro CEO Paul Broad. “We are committed to working with more locals and are proud that to date more than 100 businesses have been involved with Snowy 2.0, with more than $35 million spent in the local region.” Snowy 2.0 are looking to hire hundreds more people over the coming months for roles such as: carpenter, fitter, welder, electrician, truck drivers, general labourer, trades assistant, rigger, dogman, scaffolder and plant operator. To help make it easier for local residents to find and apply for jobs, Future Generation (the principal contractor building Snowy 2.0 on behalf of Snowy Hydro) has set up an online register for those who live in the Snowy Monaro and Snowy Valleys council areas.

People can provide their resume and contact details on the futuregenerationjv. com.au website - just go to the Work With Us page. Sub-contractors looking to hire staff will be provided with details of those local applicants who have expressed interest and registered, and Future Generation will also have your details on-file for upcoming roles. Snowy Hydro and contractor Future Generation Joint Venture are also looking to employ some of the affected workers in regional industries impacted by recent bushfires, such as timber, farming and orchards. Initial jobs drop-in sessions have been held in Tumut, Tumbarumba and Cooma, attracting almost 400 people with workers from impacted industries discovering more about available jobs. Further sessions will be available in coming months.

THE 2020 Snow Australia Awards were awarded via online announcements after the cancellation of the traditional glittery Melbourne event in April. Crystal Globes winners, snowboarder Scotty James and aerial skier Laura Peel, were named the joint winners of the Olympic Athlete of the Year title for 2020. Both finished the season ranked number one in the world and previously shared the title in 2015. Triple Olympian James now becomes the first person in history of the Snow Australia Awards to win the Athlete of the Year Award four times. It was an extraordinary season for both athletes, with dual Olympian Peel claiming her career first Crystal Globe, and James becoming the overall season champion for the third time. Peel finished the season with two gold, one silver and one bronze medal, in her first year jumping triple back somersaults. The 30-year-old Canberra local said that this season far exceeded the expectations she had set for herself. “It was a great season - was pretty magic for me. I went in doing triples and completing triples for the first time - so the goal wasn’t to win the Crystal Globe, it

was to gain some experience doing triples,” Peel said. “But that (winning the Crystal Globe) has been a dream of mine pretty much since I started the sport, so this was a really amazing season,” she said. James successfully defended his X-Games titles and won the Dew Tour event in Copper Mountain. He qualified first in every World Cup event, before going on to finish the season with three golds and one silver World Cup medals. James echoed Peel’s sentiments, adding that he feels extremely honoured to be named Athlete of the Year. “It’s getting harder every year to win this award, so each year brings a different excitement,” James said. “I’m very happy to be the winner of this award, alongside Laura again. She’s been amazing and I’ve been watching from afar. As winter athletes we don’t get to be together that often so it’s been good to watch and support each other from afar.” Snow Australia Chief Executive Officer Michael Kennedy said he couldn’t think of two more deserving winners for the title of Athlete of the Year Olympic Disciplines. “Scotty and Laura had fantastic seasons. sport to the next level,” Kennedy said. Ben Tudhope was named Snow Australia’s 2020 Paralympic Athlete of the Year after producing his best season to date, winning two gold and three silver World Cup medals and crowned Crystal Globe champion. The 20 year old NSWIS snowboarder from Manly is Australia’s youngest ever Winter Paralympian, 14 years at Sochi 2014, and was arguably Australia’s best athlete on the World Para Snowboard World Cup circuit. Ben’s performance on the world stage was inspirational after the sudden passing of his coach and mentor Mikko Wendelin at the start of the season. “This is such an incredible title to have - I’m overwhelmed with joy right now. It’s just amazing to see how far my career has come and to be honoured with this achievement just really puts me at the top of my game,” Tudhope said. Jindabyne snowboarder Josie Baff was named as Snow Australia’s 2020 Junior Athlete of the Year after making history and winning Australia’s first ever Winter Youth Olympic Games gold medal at Lausanne 2020. The 16-year old claimed gold in a dramatic Big Final, where she finished a narrow 0.05 seconds in front of French snowboarder

SNOW Australia have launched a new formal recognition of athletic achievement in winter sports, the Snow Australia Medal. The legacy award will be presented to honour past and retiring athletes who achieved success for Australia at the highest levels of the sport across the Snow Australia Alpine, Cross Country, Freestyle, Snowboard, Park and Pipe and Para-disciplines. Snow sports athletes who won a medal at World Championships or World Cup level, or who represented Australia at the Winter Olympic or Paralympic Games during their careers, will be eligible to receive the Snow Australia Medal. The medals will be presented by Snow Australia, retrospectively, to past athletes and, in the future, to retiring athletes at the end of their final season. The initial list of medal recipients, which comprises almost 200 top Australian snow sports athletes dating back to the 1952 Winter Olympics, boasts our sport’s biggest names including Malcom Milne, Kirstie Marshall, Zali Steggall and Olympic Gold Medal winners Alisa Camplin, Torah Bright Lydia Lassila and Steven Bradbury to name a few. full list of recipients will be progressively announced by Snow Australia in the coming months. Snow Australia CEO Michael Kennedy said: “Our sport has a proud history at the Olympic, Paralympic, World Championship and World Cup level. The Snow Australia medal will allow us to recognise and celebrate the achievements and careers of those athletes that pioneered Australia’s strong reputation on the international stage.” The design of the Snow Australia Medal will be finalised later in the year, with Snow Australia seeking to capture the tradition and iconic imagery of the sport in the design.

Snowy Business Growth WHEN managers and lodge owners receive a delivery of any Snowy Laundry products, owner Mick Roberts knows it will be the absolute best quality as he and wife Rebecca oversee the entire operation in their state-of-the-art laundry in Jindabyne. Since they first purchased the business five years ago, Mick said they have invested heavily in new machinery and grown the business. “It was quite small then, and in that five years we have increased the business over tenfold of volume turnover. We have upgraded to the latest high tech machinery which allows us to deliver a better product in a more efficient time frame,” said Mick. Looking to the future, Mick and Rebecca

both agree they still have plenty of room to cope with more demand which in turn will lead to offering more employment. “We have a year-round team of eight staff, but that really grows during winter months of course when we employ up to 30 staff. They are a mix of locals and also winter seasonal staff, but we would really like to offer more year-round jobs so we are looking to expand the business by attracting new clients.” Snowy Laundry have strategies in place to manage with all demand and new customers are welcome to visit their laundry. “We are happy to invite lodge owners to see our operation. They can then see for themselves that we have the latest machinery and the capacity to take on

their work, plus more. It’s all state-ofthe-art machinery and we are not at our limit at all.” “Everything is processed here in Jindabyne, we don’t outsource any of our washing or ironing needs. We provide delivery services to Thredbo, Perisher, Charlotte Pass and Jindayne. We also service the south coast from Bermagui in the north to Gypsys Point in the south. “We offer excellent specialised service all the time and be believe our pricing is very competitive. Our pricing is very transparent, the price we quote is the total inclusive price, there are no hidden levies or surcharges.” Snowy Laundry is based in Leesville Estate in Jindabyne, you can see their ad on page 19, or call Mick Roberts for any enquiry.

Public Consultation for SAP THE NSW government planning department will return to Jindabyne in July where they will commence public consultation for the Snowy Mountains Special Activation Precinct (SAP). Planners will be engaging with the community, ideally through pop-up events, meeting with the Community Advisory Group and online to progress the master plan process for the SAP. Consultants are also now on board conducting technical studies that will inform the master plan. Behind the scenes, work on upsizing the Jindabyne master plan into the much bigger Snowy Special Activation Precinct has been moving ahead. Technical studies will be drafted this month that enable the

team to clearly determine the practical capacity of the area, for significantly broader infrastructure growth. This combined with the fieldwork and technical studies that take place in July will be integral for the final presentation of the SAP Master Plan. The Deputy Premier and Member for Monaro, John Barilaro said the Go Jindabyne was an exciting prospect, but it quickly became clear that the community wanted something bigger and the Special Activation Precinct model was a perfect fit. “The Snowy Mountains is one of the most sought after destinations in the country and I am excited by the prospect of working with local communities to further unlock the potential of the

region,” said Mr Barilaro. “This July we will be engaging with locals and meeting with the Community Advisory Group to receive feedback and progress the master plan process for the Snowy SAP. “When completed, the SAP will revolutionise the Snowy region, allowing businesses and tourism operators to work

New Book on the History of Hotel Kosciusko I know that our region and our local businesses have struggled with the restrictions placed on NSW due to COVID-19. With restrictions eased on June 1, our region is preparing to return to some level of normality. Over the summer we faced disastrous bushfires, which had a significant impact on everyone. The bushfires were off the back off the worst drought in living memory and now on top of it all we are facing a global pandemic. This has been an incredibly testing time for all of us across the Monaro. But during this tough time, it has been heart-warming to see the resilience of our community shine through as we look to the future. As restrictions ease we will see our communities come back together, with cafés, pubs and clubs able to accommodate up to 50 customers at a time. Beauty and nail salons can reopen and visits to museums, galleries and libraries can again take place. These are positive steps for our community. Small businesses are the heart of our region’s economy and they need our support now more than ever. Intra-state travel in NSW for holidays and recreational purposes has also recommenced, which will give a much needed boost to NSW’s regional tourism industry. This is great news for the Monaro, with our region feeling the pinch following what we can all agree was a terrible summer tourism season. It is important that we remain vigilant throughout this transition. Whilst this is a great opportunity for us to begin to return back to normal, we need to ensure we continue to protect our community. I take this opportunity to remind everyone to maintain physical distancing, practice good hand hygiene, and ensure that you have installed the Government’s COVIDSafe app. If you have a fever, cough, runny nose or shortness of breath please ensure you are tested for COVID-19. Testing facilities in Monaro can be accessed 7 days a week at Queanbeyan Hospital and Cooma Hospital or at the Bombala MPS pop up clinic every Thursday 8:30am to 12:30pm. Anyone planning to be tested should call 1800 999 880 before presenting for testing. Our region is well prepared for the transitions taking place and I thank everyone for their efforts in protecting our community. We still have a long way to go, but we have done a great job so far. I look forward to seeing you out and about, even if it is from a distance, and I encourage everyone to support our local businesses through this difficult time. By STEVE CUFF THE history of skiing in NSW is captivating and dates back to the early 20th century. Author Donald Johnston has recaptured an intriguing and important piece of this history in his just released book, “Hotel Kosciusko”, the history and legacy of Australia’s first planned alpine resort. The Hotel Kosciusko, now called Sponar’s Chalet and situated on the road to Perisher is still a stunning site, but its total grandeur was lost in the fire of 1951. In his preface for the book, Donald said he first visited the hotel in August 1958, when at the age of 17 embarked on his first skiing experience. “I was immediately fascinated by the tales told by my travelling companions about the loss of the original Hotel by fire and how it had been a popular recreational establishment in the early part of the 20th Century,” said Donald. Donald started researching his book in 2012 and finished writing the final words in December 2019. What he has produced is 310 pages of tales and historic photographs that will make for compelling reading for those with history or snow interest. He has also created a scale model of the original building. “When I first started, it was after I discovered the original architectural plans and the original 1911 hotel registers.” That sparked his interest into looking at the social side of the hotel. To source more information, he had support from the Sydney Morning Herald RSVP column when they noticed he was asking for anyone who had information on the building. “Amazingly over that 7 years, 150 individuals or families suddenly discovered all their old family albums of their parents or other relatives including those on the staff. They were wonderful contributors to the background of the research.” “This discovery was fortunate as so many of the early records were lost in the fire in April 1951. These included personal papers of George Petersen (manager 1931-1959), which in detail had encapsulated much of the Hotel’s life, as well as many of

the Hotel’s trading files and historic guest registers.” One reader, Mark Hutchinson, contacted Donald as his father Herbert was an engineer at the hotel and present on the night of the 1951 fire. Herbert suffered burns to his hands and arms on the night. “Mark has kept some wonderful records, photographic and documentation from his father about his time at the hotel, he has been a wonderful contributor as well.” Visiting Sponar’s Chalet today you can still see the original building footings. Sponars was actually the staff quarters of the Hotel Kosciusko, and itself alone is an impressive building with much history documented inside. The book is available now from the Perisher Historical Society website. The society have also been instrumental in supporting the publication of the book. President of the Perisher Historical Society Philip Woodman said, “As a retired heritage architect Donald was drawn to the heritage of the destroyed hotel building and its remaining four storey staff accommodation. he realised the gold mine of history that was generated by this building. Donald went on a voyage of discovery that has resulted in this wonderful book. It contains details of humanity, derring-do and structure presented so as to reveal the culture of the times, of the guests, of the employees and the managers.” “Donald Johnston is to be congratulated on the accurate and realistic detail that his book provides.” Visit the website to purchase a copy of “Hotel Kosciusko” and experience the full history of its trading, meet its former management, staff and guests who patronised the Hotel plus hear their stories, anecdotes and eyewitness accounts of escaping the fire. www.perisherhistory.org.au

COOKIE lovers are in luck this winter with Snowy Mountains Cookies now available from the Jindabyne NewsXpress in Nugget’s Crossing. Previously you would have purchased the delicious cookies from their factory outlet at Leesville Estate, but recent restrictions around visitation resulted in a change of strategy. Snowy Mountains Cookies owner Nolen Oayda said, “We’ve always been aware that our factory outlet, located in Leesville Estate, meant we missed out on a lot of walk by traffic and that some customers didn’t have the time or the drive to visit Leesville Estate.” “COVID-19 had us shutting down the

factory to visitors so we could focus on maintaining a high level of hygiene for our manufacturing environment and staff. So, with no visitors allowed our factory outlet was vacant and non-operational.” Customers will find a full cookie display just inside the front door at the Jindabyne NewsXpress in the courtyard. “Still the same discounted prices, ‘imperfect but delicious’ range including trials, excess stock and short shelf life stock,” said Nolen. A huge advantage for buyers is the newsagent is open more days per week and longer hours than the cookie factory, plus you have extra options of gifts and other stock at NewsXpress.

ONE STOP FOR ALL THINGS SNOW HIRE Stockli Demo & Performance skis Skis Snowboards Season Rentals Jackets & Pants Snow Chains STRONG: Matt Graham is looking ahead to the 2022 Winter Olympic games.

Road Ahead for Athlete THE season ahead for competing athletes could be interesting with events not assured of proceeding plus the northern hemisphere still uncertain. Winter Olympic silver medallist mogul skier Matt Graham is one such athlete who is looking ahead to see what his options are. “It’s all pretty early days what will be available this season,” said Matt. The next 12 months for winter athletes are important leading into the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in China. “The team is kind of expecting the worst and hoping for the best as far as the 2020 northern hemisphere winter is concerned. There is so much unknown with international travel, there is a possibility we won’t be able to go overseas during the summer.” “Hopefully, there will be somewhere to go overseas to train, it will be a massive blow to us if we can’t get overseas this northern hemisphere winter to ski. Most of the internationals will be at their home destinations and be able to ski. “We are hoping for something, but the public health and our safety is probably the biggest priority.” The mogul team have been on a June training camp utilising a water ramp in Melbourne, but their sights are set on the new $6.5 million Brisbane year-round freestyle ski jumping facility. “The facility down here (Melbourne) is quiet old, I think it might have been built in the 80’s, we jump into a dirty old pond, whereas up in Brisbane it will be a state of the art facility. It will be a really cool change, it is a year-round facility and a lot more comfortable in the colder months.”

Life on the road for Matt is nothing new, he has been mixing education and competing for many years both in Australia and internationally. His family have all been extremely supportive along with sponsorship, which all athletes would struggle without. Matt said Red Energy is his main sponsorship, plus mum and dad, and it has been great to be part of that brand for the past two years. “We are heading into our third year on contract now, they have been great support to me. I really enjoy the company and like what they are about, they are 100% owned by Snowy Hydro and Australian owned, so that is something everyone can learn from now, especially with the current economic circumstances and everything, it is quite good to support the locals.” Combining a degree in civil engineering and business at the Newcastle University, the university schedule works well having a break over summer when Matt competes on the World Cup. The rest of the year he manages by studying from abroad or away from home when training at Perisher. “The University of Newcastle have helped me out a lot in that regard, it is just a balancing act between university and training really. It is something I have been doing my whole life, even growing up through school it was schoolwork and skiing, and now it is uni and skiing.” Matt said he never considered hanging up the boots after the South Korean 2018 Winter Olympics and is committed to the next Winter Olympics in China 2022. “It would be nice to go one better than the last Olympics.”

With the winter season open and increased heavy vehicle activity from the Snowy 2.0 project, sharing the road in the Snowys has never been more important. “Transport for NSW have been working with Snowy Hydro to deliver a number of road upgrades to help improve safety and efficiency for all motorists ahead of an increase in heavy vehicles needed for the Snowy 2.0 project,â€? said a Transport for NSW spokesperson. These upgrades are currently underway to improve safety and allow safer movements of large machinery and heavy vehicles along highways and vital intersections. New Thredbo By STEVE CUFF THREDBO unveiled their new Merritts Gondola in June with the $15 million project ready to welcome guests for the 2020 season. The high speed eight-person Doppelmayr constructed gondola has replaced the old Merritts double chair and is the only alpine gondola in Australia. The gondola quadruples the capacity to 2000 people per hour with the ride from the village to the top taking only six minutes. Thredbo Resort General Manager, Stuart Diver said it is a significant investment in Thredbo and will revolutionise how people move around the resort. “It is going to be really exciting and I think Thredbo people don’t realise just how good it’s going to be,” said Mr Diver. Mr Diver said he really liked the fact that guests will be able to access both the Cruiser chair and Friday Flat precinct much easier from the village area. The gondola base station is adjacent to the village bridge and next to the Kosciuszko Express chair. “It’s going to be great for our skiers, great for our beginners, it is going to be a lot safer and it is going to really add to the offering of Thredbo.” Guests can load the gondola at the village base, ride to the mid station near the lower High Noon run and alight for access to Friday Flat, or continue straight to the Merritts area and the Cruiser chair with a comfortable ride in the gondola cabin. For those wanting to download from the alpine to the village, or particularly for kids in snowsports lessons at the Cruiser area can now download via the gondola to the mid station for a return to the Friday Flat precinct. Previously they would download on Gunbarrel chair. “It really will revolutionise the way that people move around the mountain as well as opening up a really good, bad weather

day alternative for intermediates to ski down the newly snow made and widened Dream Run.” The Dream Run will be easily accessed from the top of the gondola, as will the Merritts Mountain House Restaurant and Cruiser chair. On blizzard days where there might be a possibility of wind hold higher in the alpine areas, the gondola should allow access to Dream Run to then ski back to the mid station. The popular Dream Run has received a huge makeover with a fully automated snowmaking system and slope works. During this summer of construction, the crew from the Australian arm of the Doppelmayr company, the leading ski lifting company in the world will have unpacked and installed 45 containers of equipment, delivered 20 truckloads of reinforcing and steel, poured 150 truckloads of concrete plus employed a Blackhawk helicopter to fly the lift towers into position. “It is a remarkable engineering

Gondola Open on time for the 2020 snow season. “Merritts is the first eight passenger gondola in the Australian snowfields and offers world leading European quality, safety and green technology,” said Mr Turner. “Thredbo’s new gondola is driven by a massive slow turning motor which is super quiet and more efficient than a conventional gondola. We would like to commend Thredbo for demonstrating their commitment to sustainability and the environment with the update of this innovative technology.” Guests who ride the gondola in 2020 (at least to start the season) will have to abide by any NSW health department restrictions of social distancing. This may limit how many people can ride at one time per cabin. achievement thanks to the tenacity and depth of knowledge and expertise at Doppelmayr,” said Stuart Diver. Frank Prihoda Honoured with Frank’s Face Run By STEVE CUFF ACCOLADES have often flowed for Thredbo’s favourite resident Frank Prihoda. He was inducted as one of the Faces of Thredbo in 2014, operated a gift shop in the village for many years and is a past Winter Olympian for Australia. Frank was bestowed another honour in June with the naming of Frank’s Face, a run next to the Karel’s T-bar which will be a cause for more celebration on his 99th birthday on July 8. When asked was it exciting to have a run named after him, Frank responded, “Yes, look I was very touched and pleased when I heard about it.” “It is more poignant in as much as Karel (Karel’s T-bar) was my brother in law, and Sasha’s Schuss, Sasha was my sister and my slope will be in between. So, it is sort of a family affair and very pleasant and exciting yes.” Thredbo general manager Stuart Diver revealed the news when offering Frank a guided tour of the new Merritts Gondola. “Yes, enormous gondola ride and photo taken at the bottom station with Stuart. It was an honour for me, and I appreciate all the gestures of Stuart and

of course the KT company,” said Frank. Karel Nekvapil and wife Sasha were inducted as the Faces of Thredbo for their contribution of what Thredbo is today. The Frank’s Face run along with Sasha’s Schuss and Karel’s T-bar will now form a Czech triangle. The intermediate blue run is skiers right of the Karel’s T-bar and starts from Australia’s highest lifted point. Frank had fled his home in Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic) with his brother-in-law Karel in January 1949 when a Communist government was established in Czechoslovakia. Tony Sponar, another Czech and friend had escaped in December 1948 in Frank’s jeep to St Anton in Austria. Later in that same winter of 1949 Sasha Nekvapil simply slipped off a train in Switzerland after a race meeting in Grindelwald; unbeknown to her fellow team members of the communist Czechoslovakian Ski Federation. The jeep that Tony drove during his escape was cleverly utilised as the engine-power for the first ski-lift in the adjoining village to St Anton, the village of St Christoph. They would all be integral to the

history of Thredbo, and a huge link to the St Anton region in Austria whey they spent many years after their escape from Czechoslovakia. Frank’s last day of skiing in 2011 also included the Thredbo master’s race at age 91, which he said was “the last hurrah”. There will be many hurrahs on July 8 when Frank gathers with friends to start his 100th year where he noted, there “maybe a glass or two” of champagne. “I am looking forward to it and as I say, age is age.” “Unfortunately for me, I can’t even get drunk these days. My body doesn’t take kindly to it. Anyhow, yes, we shall try to celebrate in quiet style and in accordance with general regulations at the time.” Having resided in Thredbo since 1974, Frank said, “I love the place that’s why I am here. I love the people. I love the nature. I love the snow. I love the skiing sport. When I look back on my life, I see that lot of my life was connected either directly or indirectly with skiing.” “Yes the changes in Thredbo itself are tremendous, the technology, the lifting, the roads, the building, all the surrounding and all the people and all the generations, actually in my time - I

saw at least two generations of skiers go through, so it’s something to look forward to yes.” A ski champion himself, Frank represented Australia at the 1956 Olympics in Cortina, Italy, placing 54th in the slalom event and is now Australia’s oldest living Olympian. He has also just been awarded the new Snow Australia Medal for past representatives of Australia in snow sports. He said he was honoured to accept his Snow Australia Medal. “I shall be proud of it,” he said.

A ReThynk on Sustainability IN an era where people are becoming more conscious of the environment and sustainability, it is refreshing to see someone actually act on their beliefs. For Jindabyne carpenter Jason Gammell, this way of thinking has been embedded in his mind for many years. Now he has started a new business called ReThynk. For Jason, it is all about rethinking how to use everything, to repurpose and reuse, as he does not want to see the excess wastage being unceremoniously discarded at the tip. This is also where he has garnered even more inspiration to make products from others waste, after visiting the tip for years in his work. “I have been thinking about this for 20 odd years,” said Jason. “We were probably one of the first generations to come through school where they were actually teaching us about holes in the ozone layer, and recycling stuff and what we can do about sustainability.” “This was when I was in primary school in Berridale. I remember the teacher saying this would take a whole generation or two

ways of recycling that, like chipping them up or making them on site. I would love to have a made in Snowy Monaro aspect to it. I have engaged chemical engineers and structural engineers for their thoughts.” “The end goal would be to just repurpose everything and nothing to go into landfill from the building site.” Making doors and benchtops from timber, stairs from old concrete blocks or even weights from old car disc brake drums, there is a purpose for everything in the eyes of Jason. He has also built tiny homes including one at his house, and he sees a future neighbourhood in the area consisting of multiple tiny homes along with living off the land more as well. The affordability aspect of the tiny home setup also appeals to him. “There are many aspects of the tiny home, it can be more of a modular home approved by council or removeable on wheels, or a module ensuite that plugs onto the site of the house and maybe you only need it for a few years.”

for this come into practice. And now I feel it is culminating up to that point where people, my generation are buying into it. “Talking to the next generation it is starting to come through with them as well.” For his ReThynk business, Jason said, “Almost everything can be reused or repurposed for something.” “A perfect example of that is the wood we collect goes into benchtops or other wooden products. Smaller scraps of wood can be used for heating, or chipped. “I have been researching the offcuts of treated pine from the building industry,

“Where I differ from a lot of other people is I like having the client being involved, they can pick up the tool belt and jump on the saw and help create, I can help them do that in a way it is safe. I have the knowledge to help them achieve what they want to achieve. “I like the clients to be on site if it’s a bigger build, or if it is a tiny home, we are there together they can make the decisions on what they want to line it with, clad it with, what they want to roof it with.” In his perfect world the tiny home community would be sustainable, and he is working towards these goals. Talking

with other people, council, researching and looking for prospective sites are all in the pipeline. “Our centre will have a permaculture; we would love it all to be self sufficient have community involvement and even a volunteer aspect to it. People can help and then reap the rewards of having their own produce.” “We are already a good community; I

am just trying to shine the light on the benefits on how rewarding we can make it.”

THINKING: Carpenter Jason Gammell has been rethinking how he uses all material. Building tiny homes, using recycled material and weights out of car brake drums.

Exploring the Alpine Backcountry By GINA WOODWARD THE backcountry, yes that beautiful expanse of our Main Range that many of us wistfully stare at from the comfort of the resorts… well now is your time to explore it and gain a huge sense of achievement as you truly earn your turns. It’s not to be messed with as it’s the real deal out there and Mother Nature is the boss. However, she’s playful, surprising and welcoming all at the same time, especially when you’re in safe hands with the guides from Snowy Mountains Backcountry (SMBC). Based in the Guthega Centre, Doug Chatten and his team of expert professional guides offer a full range of programs. Alpine ski touring and snowshoeing options are on offer with short course, half days, and full days. The most popular in 2019 was the full day Backcountry Intro Tour, designed to help you enjoy and understand the backcountry environment, plus give you access to all the gear needed to explore it.

UR N O DEAL O ECT BEST R I K D R THE O O B E FO T BSI WE

Included in this introductory program price is the loan of a backpack and emergency equipment for the day. As the risks in the backcountry are real, safety is always number one. Participants needing to rent additional gear can access a special program price for alpine touring skis, climbing skins and adjustable poles. Those wanting to do the program on a snowboard can rent snowshoes and bring their own board. On our trip out from Guthega in Spring 2019, we enjoyed sunshine and soft snow with a small group all eager to learn more. Starting in the SMBC headquarters, we worked through the expectations of the day and how to use safety equipment including personal locator beacons. Leaving Guthega with a sense of excitement and slight trepidation, we descended to the dam wall and began our adventure into the backcountry after learning to apply our climbing skins to the skis. Learning to traverse efficiently, how to read a slope, when to stop, and what pace to climb at are all important parts of the

process with techniques and tips shared by the guides. In this friendly learning environment, we explored not only the environment but learnt about the heritage of the area and enjoyed magnificent views in all directions. Well-deserved snack breaks gave us the energy to continue climbing, and enough to yell out a few ‘woohoos’ skiing untouched slopes we’d never seen before. Owner, Doug Chatten, says the programs are as much about learning as they are about an adventure experience. “Each participant takes away a lot of knowledge - you will leave SMBC knowing how to move through the mountains more safely,” he says. Their range of courses offer a fantastic way to learn about the skills and equipment

PERISHER have continually invested in snowmaking to the tune of $22 million in the past decade. They are renowned for the highest quality and most reliable snow cover in Australia, and implementing and improving snowmaking systems across the resort have allowed the resort to open more terrain earlier, even if mother nature does not fully co-operate with natural snow falls. WE HAVE THE BACKCOUNTRY COVERED

MOUNT Perisher has forever been a favourite area and the Towers run a haven for the Perisher faithful. Good news on the horizon is Perisher have a Development Application (DA) lodged for a new six seat detachable chair to replace the current double and triple chairs on Mount Perisher. In what Peter Brulisauer, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Vail Resorts Australia and Perisher described as a “significant development”, the Mount Perisher landscape is set to be vastly changed. The development is much needed, and some would say long overdue, as the double chair was installed in 1961. Included as part of their overall plans would see the Towers run widened and the new bottom station lower than the current triple, plus take a similar line to the triple chair. With a 90-degree unload at the top the chair would also be the highest lifted point in Australia. Currently Thredbo have the highest lifted point with Karels T-bar at 2037m. This would be surpassed with the new sixseater top station unload area at 2041.69 metres. There would be two new skier bridges at the bottom of Towers for access and the Eyre T-bar bull

wheel would be relocated downhill 11.2 metres. The estimated cost for the entire project is over $19 million. The DA is currently under assessment (June 2020) and Perisher have indicated they do not have a timeframe for construction yet. “Once we receive approval, we will assess the landscape and determine the best path,” said Brulisauer. Considering a recent statement from Vail Resorts saying all capital expenditure will be deferred, once the project is approved who knows when we will ride the new chair. In discussing the finer points of the project, Brulisauer, who grew up skiing at Perisher and knows the resort terrain intimately said, “We are really excited about how well the run will ski and ride once its widened and the towers from the Mt Perisher Double and Triple chairlifts are removed. It’s excellent terrain and it will be an unbelievable improvement.” “The 90 degree unload like the Village Eight Express will deliver guests higher up on the hill, sheltered from the prevailing wind and ready to head out high and wide past Eyre T-Bar to Shiftys, or select more fall line and choose from one of the many runs from the top of Mt Perisher.” Regular visitors are well aware that when the blizzards deliver new snow, they often arrive with

Snowy Mountains Magazine - 2020 - 32

strong winds which result in wind hold days for the chairs. Mr Brulisauer said, “We are very confident that the chair design will perform very well in the wind, just like the Village Eight Express. It will be a massive improvement on the current wind performance of the chairlifts on Mt Perisher.” When we queried once the new chair is installed would Mt Perisher become overly busy and create traffic problems, Brulisauer said, “I think it will be loved like the recent chairlifts we have added to Perisher, only on a much bigger scale. In 2014, our guests rushed to Guthega to experience the new Freedom Chairlift and for many it is still their favourite place in the resort. Likewise, in 2019 the new Leichhardt Chairlift changed the way that skiers and snowboarders experienced Perisher Valley with far more people enjoying that part of the resort including the much loved Leichhardt Terrain Park.” There are also plans to revamp the double chair restaurant, but no confirmed schedule as yet. You would expect the new chair would see increased traffic, so the current Powder Inn restaurant would be in dire need of an upgrade. The restaurant plan is to expand the facility and create an indoor and outdoor dining venue and bar. Access to the new chair would be via a slight downhill traverse from the deck area across to the loading station.

When will ski season start?

What do I need to do?

From June 22 the alpine region will be open for snow sports with restrictions in place and limitations on numbers.

If you are visiting be sure to plan ahead.

The NSW Government, through NSW Health and NSW Police, is working closely with ski field operators, associated businesses, suppliers and industry associations to ensure COVIDsafe measures are in place when the season commences.

Book your travel and accommodation well in advance. Ensure you confirm your plans before you leave. If you feel unwell postpone your trip.

Measures and how to purchase a lift ticket will be listed on individual ski resort websites.

What precautions will be in place to protect people? Fewer people will be allowed to visit and stay at resorts this season. There will be measures in place on the ski fields as well as in accommodation, dining and other recreational facilities. Measures that will be in place include:

Maintaining physical distancing at resorts. Limits to the number of people in ski areas. Controlled access to ski lifts. Increased cleaning of all facilities. No snow play.

Supercars Legend Tyrepower Ambassador

Interview with Peter Brulisauer WITH MANY QUESTIONS BEING ASKED TO START OUR WINTER, WE ASKED PETER BRULISAUER, VAIL RESORTS SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT AND CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER, AUSTRALIA AND PERISHER HOW THEIR DECISIONS WERE MADE.

In the lead up to winter, it was a group effort from the Australian Ski Areas Association (ASSA), how did you approach approval for having a winter season? We were trying to make the best of the information we had and thought that we were going to be far better off working as an industry to find solutions rather than going it alone. We had to assess our respective resorts to gauge whether there was a way we could safely operate and if so, we had to develop those plans and communicate them to the government. All the resorts came together to engage more broadly with both industry and government to put an operating plan forward that we thought would be safe for our guests, our staff, and the communities that we operate in. Both the Victorian and NSW Governments were excellent to work

In July school holidays you are selling multi day tickets, how will you know how many days to sell and still have space for season pass holders, especially if there is limited terrain open? The July school holidays were going to be a big challenge for all resorts whether you are accommodating season pass holders, selling day tickets or both. If you are selling any products in advance, you are relying on what the experience has been based on historical snow fall patterns. We have a later start this year and because of how weather conditions have been of late, we have had to factor that in terms of the tickets we have been willing to sell and reservations for pass holders in regard to the amount of snow and terrain that we think we will have open.

cost for those people who prefer not to drive to Perisher? We refunded the Skitube add-on to season passes in another effort to manage capacity. That said, things are changing quickly, and we aim to adapt Skitube capacity as quickly as we can as regulations change. The current revised timetable will be on a 25 minute basis throughout the day and daily prices will be shown on our website.

with and it was a real collaborative effort.

For school holiday limits, season pass holders must register, will there be some people who miss out? Unfortunately not all season pass guests will be able to secure a reservation. We are trying to give our pass holders as many choices as we can, while we navigate through the physical distancing required due to COVID-19. We told pass holders that if they would like a full refund on their pass, to notify us by 19 June. If restrictions ease, we look forward to offering normal season pass access that our pass holders are looking for but to get to that point, it does mean that in this early season period there is a reservations system and capacity limits.

the curve flatten. We took an educated guess that restrictions would continue to ease, so we were hopeful that we would be able to allow pass holders to ski and ride on their season passes and we didn’t want to shut the door on those options. So, just like with the Skitube, we looked at putting in place a system that would allow people access and we’ll hopefully increase capacity through the winter.

It was obvious you had to show you could reduce number capacity but how could you keep your season pass and still run under that capacity? That was obviously a challenge, but one that we think we have figured out, so too has Mt Buller. Ultimately, it is all about data. We understand the behaviour of our pass holders and know that their visits are always somewhat dependant on snow. By requiring pass holder reservations at the start of the season we are able to control visitation which will allow us to ensure physical distancing among our guests. Later in the season we think we will have sufficient resort capacity to allow paid guests to visit our resorts alongside pass holders who won’t need to make reservations in advance.

Skitube - you must limit numbers and have refunded the season pass component. How will Skitube look and

Now that restrictions have eased, did you take an educated guess the situation would improve, was that a key decision of keeping the seasons pass? Yes, we had to make some assumptions as to how we plan the season. Australians were doing the right thing and doing exactly what the government asked of them and as a result, we were seeing

Fast forward to August, if snow conditions are good and the whole resort is open can Perisher handle all capacity of season pass visitors and day ticket people? We don’t know what the restrictions are going to look like in August, but I am hopeful there is also a scenario where there are no restrictions in August. We have always safely managed the August

crowds and we will continue to do so again this year. I am also very mindful that some of the guests who visited us in previous seasons might not be in a position to do so this year. We are keeping a very close eye on capacity and will try to understand how many lift tickets we can sell. We have only sold tickets to 19 July at this point, another one of the strategies we’re employing to give us a good picture to what is happening with restrictions and what is happening with snow. Interview with Stuart Diver THREDBO GENERAL MANAGER STUART DIVER WAS ASKED FOR HIS THOUGHTS ON THE START TO THE 2020 SEASON, READ ON FOR THE INTERVIEW.

When the NSW government advised you had to reduce numbers to open, you had no choice but look at other options as you could not meet the demand anyway? Yes, correct, capacity restraints were the logical way for the resorts to be able to open. Obviously, we sell tickets and it was the best alternative of constraining capacity, so all resorts agreed we would limit the number of tickets available each day.

contacting guests and making sure we looked after as many people as we could.

Could you not have reduced capacity by keeping season pass and registering season passes? No, because the issue you have is, we are not providing season pass holders to be able to ride every day of the season as they would have liked. We simply can’t fit the number of season pass holders within those capacity restraints regardless of, and that is without selling another ticket into the marketplace. The only option for us was to refund that and come up with another discount approach for our season pass holders.

Do you have any sympathy, have you contacted the accommodation providers who may have lost bookings due to guests not being able to acquire tickets? Absolutely, we are working very closely with all accommodation providers in Thredbo - the main commercial ones to make sure their guests who have accommodation bookings have access to tickets if there is passes still available. But sadly, for a resort the size of Thredbo, there is just not enough tickets to go around, so people who have booked accommodation are going to miss out unfortunately, especially during that school holidays period.

The whole ticket purchasing process, it didn’t work out well for the consumers. Most definitely. I am as disappointed and as frustrated as many of our Thredbo guests are but hopefully, we have rectified those issues and moving forward it will be a much smoother experience for everyone. Guest services and my team in Thredbo did an amazing job in pulling it back and

You were never going to able to meet that demand, were there always going to be more guests than you had capacity for? Absolutely, just look at school holidays - there was three times the demand for what tickets were available. Unfortunately, that means people are always going to miss out.

Now you have gone to the market with your new ticket structure and with the NSW restrictions changing rapidly and starting to open, does this change your lift ticket structure for after July school holidays going into August? No not at all. We said our strategies

FULLY LICENSED

are all based about being able to ramp up whenever we want. We can limit as required by the government and ramp up as needed. If restrictions ease and conditions change, I have always said we will definitely be able to release more passes into the market and that was always our intention and is why I believe our strategy is a really good one. For season pass holders who ski say more than 20 days, it is going to cost them more. What do you say to all those people disappointed they can’t ski as much as they want? If you actually look at it, the season pass discounts we are offering are unbelievably generous especially for those who ski for more than 20 days and we have a lot of really positive feedback in that regard. Thredbo has done everything they can within the government restrictions of COVID 19 to make sure our season pass holders are looked after. If more days are released the more days they ski and as you know, receiving huge discounts. Sure, it may cost a little bit more, but we are in very, very changed times, very challenging conditions and Thredbo is doing absolutely everything to look after our stake holders to make sure everyone gets an opportunity to ski this year. Those capacity restrictions are based around the size of the mountain facilities and Thredbo does not have as much

Stuart Diver.

overall terrain in hectares as bigger resorts, that is obviously a factor? Yes 100%. You have to be very clear that Thredbo is of the firm belief that we were unable to service our season pass holders because we were unable to give our season pass holders unlimited access throughout the entire season to the mountain. So regardless if restrictions eased, we based our model on the fact that we needed to be able to provide our season pass holders with surety that they could come on a certain day and they could ski and that is what I believe the Thredbo model provides. Snowy Mountains Summer Splendour

◼ STUNNING: Flowers blooming above Lake Albina on the Main Range Track. PHOTO: www.mikeedmondson.com.au

FORGET the age old saying of ‘stop and smell the roses’, next summer embark on an exciting holiday adventure breathing fresh alpine air and acquainting yourself with the aromas of alpine wildflowers. Scattered across the roof of Australia and unique to Kosciuszko National Park, the 25 different alpine wildflowers have their main bloom during summer ensuring you an opportunity to witness their splendour no matter what summer month you travel. While the flowers are a magnificent sight, it is only a small component of summer exploration across the Snowy Mountains. The beauty of sighting the wildflowers means you have embarked on a hiking adventure where you will find a plethora of trails and routes for easy walks or extensive multi day hikes. The hiking list is endless no matter what area of the National Park you travel. In the southern region choose from Porcupine Rocks, picturesque Rainbow Lake, the Main Range Track via the spectacular Blue Lake and the most popular of all, the hike to the top of Australia and Mt Kosciuszko. Besides the high alpine options, the trails around Thredbo Village present many choices including the Thredbo Valley Track, a shared trail from Thredbo to Lake Crackenback Resort, ideal for hiking or mountain biking with the Thredbo River an attraction. Lake Crackenback Resort itself has

numerous scenic trails for both hiking and biking. On the western side of the ranges, Khancoban and Tumbarumba are ideal base points where you can explore the Khancoban Pondage surrounds and Snowy Hydro sites, the fast flowing Paddys River Falls, a true hidden gem, or the Hume and Hovell Track. Yarrangobilly Caves is a rare jewel in the crown for exploration and a mustsee destination. Venture beneath the surface inside purpose lit caves and witness mother nature’s most stunning creations. Plus be sure to pack the swimmers for a dip in the 27 degrees thermal hot springs. Talbingo and Tumut to the north opens a whole new world again of trails, biking and fishing with the Snowy Scheme dams and power stations offering a touring route of sites. Fishing is in abundance across the region with Snowy Mountains trout luring many an angler to the weaving mountain waterways. The Tumut River, Blowering Dam, Talbingo Reservoir in the north or the vast Lake Eucumbene with multiple access points near the town of Adaminaby. Adaminaby have their big trout in the town centre, just to give you a not so gentle reminder of what you could catch. Seek out local guide Col Sinclair if you want the inside knowledge of where to land the best fish. Staying in Jindabyne or surrounds will surely tempt you to throw a line in at Lake Jindabyne or the Thredbo River. Ask at the local fishing shops

of High Country Outfitters, where Murray Ogilvie guides and teaches fly fishing, or ask Brain Burns at Lakeside Lure and Tackle opposite the Thredbo turnoff for all the best tips to lure a great lake trout. The thrill of descending down a gravity trail or blasting along a single track has seen mountain biking become a huge part of the summer landscape across the region. It is not uncommon to see streams of visitors with multiple bikes strapped to their cars as they seek their next biking adventure. There are literally hundreds of kilometres of trails, just stop at one of the bike shops or visitor centres to find maps of all the trails. With a calendar full of events and endless inspirational activities, we hope to see you during the summer for your next Snowy Mountains adventure. See ad on adjoining page for ideas and locations to visit.

NEW: The Mt Lee raised mesh walkway. PHOTO: NPWS Photo Collection.

Snowies Iconic Walk THE new $17 million Snowies Iconic Walk from Charlotte Pass via Guthega to Perisher and eventually finishing at Bullocks Flat continues progress after being interrupted by the January bushfires. The Mount Lee stage 1 was completed last year with a realigned 1.7km raised mesh walkway protecting one of the rarest plant communities in the world, the Windswept Feldmark. Rehabilitation work on the bypassed Windswept Feldmark will recommence in spring 2020. Stage 2 work of the 5.6km track that runs parallel to the Snowy River is underway between Charlotte Pass and the Illawong bridge near Guthega.

As regional NSW is reopened to tourists, the Snowy Monaro is welcoming visitors back to our wonderful region. Whether you’re here for the snow, mountain bike riding or platypus spotting, there is something on offer for everyone. « When passing through the Snowy Monaro, be sure to visit the Council operated visitor information centres in Bombala and Cooma. « The Bombala Platypus Country Information Centre is open 10am - 4pm Monday to Saturday. « Cooma Visitor Centre is open seven days a week from 9am - 3pm. Located next to Centennial Park in Cooma, we are now open with a modern look and increased accessibility for visitors. Our friendly staff are there to help. Drop by and see the new Visitor Centre for yourself or call 1800 636 525. «

Looking for that extra activity to do in winter across the region? For more information go to www.visitcooma.com.au.

Snowy Mountains Magazine - 2020 - 46

Construction methods and surfaces being used include rock paving, steel mesh elevated walkway, and gravel or natural surfaces. Around 85% of the steel mesh and 40% of the gravel sections were completed before winter. Track construction has been mindful of the environment avoiding significant impacts on threatened species and communities, especially alpine bogs, threatened reptiles and Mountain Pygmy-possum. Seamans Hut is also undergoing a change with a new toilet block being constructed, to be finished in early 2021. You can find more information by searching Snowies Iconic Walk at www.environment.nsw.gov.au.

VIEW: The new pump track in Talbingo.

OPEN: The crew at Sacred Ride are ecstatic about their bike shop renovations in Jindabyne.

Passion Pumping for Biking THE passion and dedication of the mountain bike and cycling community across the region is at an all time high. With many employed as trail builders who design and sculpt trails, plus more people jumping on their pedals, it is no wonder the sport is on the increase here in the mountains. Most towns have seen new trails, pump tracks and even rail trails being built in recent years. This is a welcome sight not only for residents, but also creates extra riding options for visitors. In summer, visitors flock to the region to experience the trails, but that does not

mean biking is dormant in winter, far from it. All towns in the mountains will see riders out and about regardless of the month. While the main trail building may have ceased until warmer months, locals still take to their bikes to stay fit and enjoy the outdoors. Prior to winter the Jindabyne Trail Stewardship (JTS) have been active with their continued trail maintenance. “JTS have been working with the Snowy Monaro Regional Council to improve existing trails,” said Matt Murtagh from JTS.

“We have been employing two workers and using in-kind machine donation, plus money raised through our partnership program to improve the trails.” Expect more news from council on funding for more major upgrades in coming months. Jindabyne’s local bike shop, Sacred Ride, said they are expecting more interest in hire as some people may be restricted with some days skiing. “We have fully renovated our shop before winter, so we are excited to welcome customers looking for a day off skiing, or

an alternative activity,” said Sacred Ride owner Nic Davoli. “The trails have been riding well, and everyone has been involved in the trail maintenance, so it is really great times here for riders. We have all our hire fleet available, including E-bike.” “There is a huge winter sale on until end of August, plus specials for winter services.” If visitors are wanting options in the region, ask at visitor centres or local bike shops for the best riding trails, they are literally everywhere.

Property Guide ‘Openn Negotiation’ Auction achieves sale well above reserve EVERY business has had to adapt to different circumstances in recent months. The coronavirus situation has forced their thinking to change and new strategies to reach their clients. The real estate industry is no different, and with potential buyers unable to travel due to restrictions, online platforms have proven their worth in gold. Kosciusko First National Real Estate’s ďŹ rst foray into On-line auctions in early June resulted in the successful sale of an Alpine Way property and has opened up a whole new avenue to reach buyers who are based hours away from the region. The Alpine Way property sold for $1,389,500, some $89,500 above the reserve price. The ďŹ nal bidding stage lasted 24 minutes with nine active buyers raising the price via 41 bids. Observers were also present with 26 watching the action. ‘Openn Negotiation’ is an online property purchasing platform and app designed to be transparent and fair for both buyers and

sellers. It allows qualiďŹ ed buyers to openly negotiate on price with the advantage of knowing exactly how many real competing buyers there are. The agent remains completely in control of the sale with the auction conducted

entirely online with all legal documents automated on the app so there is no need for any physical contact between buyer and seller. An ideal platform to facilitate transactions in the current Covid-19 climate.

Principle Gordon Jenkinson reports that around 80% of all Kosciusko First National Real Estate listings are purchased by out of area buyers, many from interstate with the occasional international prospect. The ‘Openn Negotiation’ platform allows these buyers to participate from wherever they currently reside. “Buyers are demanding a more open and transparent method of purchase and this process allows ‘pre-contracted’ buyers to bid on a property from day one with the leading bid able to be shown on all real estate portals, even if it is lower than the seller wants,â€? said Gordon. “It combines the ease of private treaty, transparency of auction and cutting-edge technology to ensure the best possible sale outcome is achieved.â€? Owners who are interested to ďŹ nd out more about this exciting selling process can contact the KFN sales team of Gordon Jenkinson (mob’ 0427100915) or Sally McCoullough (mob’ 0484322214) or visit their Nugget’s Crossing office.

Willow Bay Subdivision Work SITUATED on Lake Jindabyne foreshore, the Willow Bay gated development is evolving with civil works being conducted by McMahon’s Earthmoving on roadways and infrastructure. The idea of the gated community has great appeal with a waterfront outlook and views across the lake, a private road for access to your property and the peaceful surroundings adding to the ultimate lifestyle. Two of the most prime blocks (7 and 8) have already been purchased with eight remaining blocks still for sale. Although the zoning allows for dual

occupancy and short-term holiday letting, the developers are targeting the high-end residential market and buyers that are looking for spectacular views close to the water’s edge. The price of the 10 community titled lots start from $425,000, while the allotments range in size from 5,107sm to 17,304sm. Developers anticipate registration of the lots by the end of July this year (subject to weather and red tape).
