The First Word WE congratulate all the brave skiers and snowboarders who endured the wild July weather, especially the school holidays. There were some extremely cold days as Mother Nature arrived with ferocity. This image at Perisher really sums up some of those days, where the snow was good but visibility perhaps not desirable for all. Personally I love days like this, the snow is at its best when it is falling and while I understand it can be often uncomfortable in the cold and wind, if you rug up with the correct layers and stay warm the powder skiing is great. When the snow arrives in Australia most times it is accompanied by nasty blizzard weather, but when it delivers a metre of snow you can’t complain, and it really has set the peak season up with great conditions. See our story on page 9 where we offer

some tips for the cold blizzard days on how to stay warm and how to get the best of your day on the mountain. The season has already been off to a very busy start and you would expect this will continue at least until early September. If you are visiting on the weekends the best advice is to leave early for the resorts and if it has snowed, the Skitube is by far the best option for access to Perisher. On those busy days leaving Jindabyne allow at least 45-60 minutes to reach either Perisher or Thredbo. If it has snowed to lower levels possibly much longer. If you are staying beyond Jindabyne you should factor in that driving time as well and add some. That is a realistic overall travel time especially for the weekends. Enjoy the snow and see you on the slopes.

The Evolving Storm EVERY season we rely on key weather systems to deliver the snow, the beauty often being the anticipation and never knowing exactly what to expect. In late May and early June we had heavy snowfalls that allowed for an early and great opening followed by a warm spell. Then July arrived and we patiently waited to see what flakes, or how many Mother Nature might gift. Even the great weather forecasters admit it is difficult to be exact and predict months or even weeks away, so what often starts out as an estimated 10-20cm total can soon escalate and be the game changer each season needs. The Polar Express in the second week of July (yes they all seem to have names these days) never looked as promising from afar, but as it edged closer the storm was upgraded daily and eventually dropped the mother lode. Up until July 15, Thredbo had 85cm and Perisher 106cm in one 7 day period. To say it transformed the resorts is an understatement, it was greatly needed and

now has set up the following months of August and September with a great base to build on. Naturally when the snow arrives everyone wants to get amongst it, none more than the media crews at Thredbo and Perisher. You may well have spotted a few of these images on social media, but there is nothing like seeing a good snow shot in print. We have started here on this double page plus have a gallery on page 17 with more great pictures. Let’s hope this is just the beginning of many more evolving storms, those that don’t necessarily get you too excited at the beginning, but soon have you waking each morning to see how much snow they have deposited. See photo gallery on page 17.

By STEVE CUFF FANS of the James Bond movies will understand what a ‘Vesper Martini’ is, with James classically naming the drink after Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale. This drink was discussed numerous times at Wildbrumby Distillery when The Martini Whisperer, Phillip A. Jones conducted a martini and cocktails session prior to winter. With a full range of Wildbrumby products available the group set about first listening and watching Phillip create his drinks, then tasted the creations before experimenting with their own version of cocktail concoctions. During peak season we know the après scene is vibrant and many indulge in a few beverages, all part of celebrating a great snow holiday. Wildbrumby have every drink you need to join in the celebrations with various flavours of schnapps, vodka, gin and European beers on tap. As well as ordering these drinks, you can now take home the product and create your own style of cocktails. The Martini Whisperer has created his own version of the vesper, called the

Some conditions apply but it’s still a great deal!

POLAR: Simon Blondel from lè bent testing his thermal products during the polar express storm in July. PHOTO: Thredbo Resort / Tim Clark.

Beating the Blizzard EVERYONE looks at blizzards with a different perspective. The hardcore skier and snowboarder relish the fresh snow, the intermediate often retreats to an easier run and the snow play enthusiast might give up when it is too cold. You can combat the blizzard when it is freezing, snowing heavily and blowing an absolute gale, you just need to have a good battle plan with strategy. DRESS WARM You must stay warm, so before you leave the lodge dress correctly. First is a good thermal underlayer that helps keep the warmth in and wick away any moisture and consists of leggings and top layer. If you know it will be freezing cold, a second layer of thermal can be used. For your upper half you should then

apply at least a warm fleece layer, or the second base layer and then a warm fleece for third layer. A good quality jacket and pant outer layer that are waterproof and have good insulation are a must. The last thing you need is for heat to get out and the snow to start seeping in. Once outside be sure to have a neck warmer, goggles, beanie or helmet depending on your activity and a hood on your jacket. You lose the most body heat through your head, so a beanie is mandatory. Top quality gloves are worth their weight in gold, and there is nothing worse than cold fingers. If your kids are playing in the snow, two pairs of gloves are advisable. For snow play and walking good snow boots are a must, sneakers just don’t cut it and you will have frozen feet.

For skiers and snowboarders, proper designed ski socks are recommended and if your feet really suffer from the cold, look for a heated boot or heater insert for your boot. Goggles are the key to improved visibility. Different colour lenses suit for different days with the yellow lens your best friend for blizzards. The higher quality goggle the less chance they will fog up, and don’t put goggles on your head, the moisture will only make them fog. Never rub the inside of the goggle lens with your gloves, it will ruin and scratch the lens. Have a second pair in case if you are blasting around the mountain. ON THE MOUNTAIN When the weather is whiteout or blizzard conditions you need to batten

down the hatches. But you can still ski and snowboard. On these days the trees are your best friends, they give definition with the snow and with the right goggle really improve visibility. It helps if you know the terrain, so on the sunny day try and memorise the runs so when the weather changes you know the surface is smooth, no sudden drops or bumps and then you can cruise among the trees and still ride. On the groomed runs hug the edges and you will find the visibility far improved than out in the middle. Sure, you get battered at the top of the lift, but that is only momentarily and if you are all rugged up correctly it should not be too nasty. Then you will find that the best snow to ride is the flakes when they are falling.

Warby Speeds Up for August By Steve Cuff THE Team at Dave Warby Motorsport will return to Blowering Dam at Tumut on August 30-31 as they ramp up their campaign to break the unlimited world water speed record. For those not familiar with the past 20 months, Dave Warby is attempting to break the world record of 511.10 kilometres per hour set by his father Ken way back in 1978. Dave has been trialling the boat both in Tumut and Taree, and in their last outing in May on Blowering Dam they reached their fastest speed so far at just under 400 kmh.

The overall campaign to break the record was always intended to be increased in smaller increments. The team is all about safety and with good cause, there have been other hastier attempts at the record, but those people have all died in their attempts. Dave has constantly said he and the team know it is a dangerous sport, hence their continued testing, assessing and safety mindset. Just because his father built his Spirit of Australia boat in his backyard and achieved the record, does not mean it is a simple equation. “Anyone can buy a jet engine and post online that they're going for the water speed record but how many get to a running boat dwindles to a handful," Dave Warby told Australian Associated Press. "People from other countries thought 'If a guy can build one in his backyard in Sydney I can (too) with a few million dollars' - but they've really overlooked a lot of the basics." His father Ken has been waterside on several test weekends and is constantly giving his feedback from his home in Cincinnati, United States. Dave has also built his own boat, Spirit of Australia II, and has assembled a

knowledgeable team. “I don’t think you can buy the team we’ve got,” said Dave Warby. They have had minor setbacks in the past year and have constantly adjusted the boat for improvements. Just recently they swapped jet engines and will recondition engine number one while they use number two engine.

Snowy Mountains Magazine - 2019 - 11

When they arrive in Tumut in late August they will be looking to increase speed from their last outing. It will be a key testing weekend for the boat and crew. With increased speed and more importantly a clean bill of health for the boat at higher speeds, the decision may well be clearer on when they might attempt the world record. Their ambition is to reach 560kmh. The record attempt will be on Tumut’s Blowering Dam, it is just a matter of having everything aligned perfectly. Undisputed King of Halfpipe By Adam Begg SCOTTY James has accomplished the ultimate dream season where he remarkably went undefeated in competition setting him up as the most dominant snowboarder to drop into a halfpipe since Shaun White. His array of technical tricks including a switch backside 1080 has his competitors scrambling to keep up with his rapid progression since he won a bronze medal at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. Starting the northern hemisphere season

with his first win at the Grand Prix at Copper Mountain Colorado in December, James went on to make it 6 wins from 6 starts, a feat no other snowboarder has ever achieved. The Dew Tour second event featured a unique modified halfpipe with a mix of jumps and different transition types where he proved he can adapt to differing terrain. This contest was the first of its kind with James securing top position. He proved that his transition skills could translate to jumps as well, and his win in this event made it clear to his competitors that he would be the one to beat this season. Heading to Europe for the Swiss Laax Open, James had the competition wrapped up early with a very convincing victory. Such was his dominance he didn’t even have to complete his last run, instead opting for a victory lap for the people. Most riders do a style run for a victory lap, but not James. He rode down the wall of the halfpipe giving hi 5’s to all the kids and fans. It was the first victory lap of its kind and truly reflective of his generous personality, stoking out the kids and thanking his fans for braving the cold to watch him ride. James is always willing to give back and he stayed out in the cold and dark until late signing autographs whilst most other riders headed back to the village for warmth and dinner. His fourth win was the highly prestigious XGames in Aspen. After breaking his snowboard in training, he managed to peel off his sponsor stickers at the top of the course and replace them onto his back up board, re-set mentally and drop in for the win. It was his second XGames victory in three years and once again had the

competition won before the last lap and proceeded with another victory lap of hi 5’s down the wall of the pipe. In February James won his third consecutive World Title at the FIS World Championships in Park City, Utah. No other snowboarder has ever captured three world titles until Scotty James completed the hat trick earlier this year. He completed what was possibly the best run ever in a halfpipe, a run that would have clenched gold at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympics. Victory number five was now in the bag for the season. “I was pinching myself when I won my second world title, and I’m triple pinching myself now that I’ve won my third one, it’s absolutely amazing,” the 24-year-old said. James’ last competition of the season was the US Open where he was the undisputable firm favourite and clearly had a target on his back. Again, he performed under pressure with big clean technical tricks and outscored the best riders in the world to complete an undefeated competition season. The US open is one of the longest running and most prestigious events in snowboarding and James has wanted to win it since he watched it with his mum ten years ago. “I went with my mom, when it was in Vermont, and I remember just saying to her that I’d love to be a part of the halfpipe finals one day,” he said. “Now, to be crowned US Open champion, I’m absolutely speechless.” Scotty James is undeniably the best halfpipe rider in the world now and has the rest of the snowboard world chasing him heading towards the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

Snowy 2.0 Community Information THE Snowy 2.0 pumped-hydro project has ramped up significantly but it may not be so visible to the general public. Located at the Lobs Hole area in the northern region of Kosciuszko National Park, the project will be mostly constructed away from any public viewing due to the remote location of the site. Unlike the original Snowy Scheme, where they constructed nine power stations and 16 dams, most of which was visible during the building stage, the only view we will have of Snowy 2.0 is the increased road movements of machinery and personnel travelling to the site in coming years. Snowy Hydro staff recently held community information meetings across the region where they updated interested residents on project traffic movements, jobs to work on Snowy 2.0 and general information. Currently there are 70 workers on site as part of the exploratory stage where they are upgrading road access to the portal site before any drilling work can commence.

Project Director of Snowy 2.0 Kieran Cusack said the exploratory works are about gaining access to the main cavern area portal site and testing the rock for the power station cavern which will be 800m underground. That size of the eventual cavern could fit the Sydney Opera House inside. There will be an accommodation camp built for the exploratory works so Future Generation, the joint venture company tasked with building the project can start tunnelling. Once full operation of construction commences there will be an extensive community for the workers on site. In October there will be drilling and blasting occurring at the portal site in anticipation of tunnelling boring machines (TBM) arriving mid next year. “Once the main works commence there will be three tunnel boring machines and some drill and blast far enough into the portal to launch the TBM,” said Kieran Cusack. The TBM’s will be tasked with creating 27km of tunnels 10 metres in diameter

Lining the finished tunnels will be 130 thousand concrete segments that will be manufactured in a new concrete plant to be built at Polo Flat, Cooma. “First power we expect late 24, early 2025, and then progressive commissioning from there so the full station will be complete and online in mid 2026,” said Kieran. Snowy Hydro’s Environmental Services Manager Charlie Litchfield advised of procedures they have put in place and answered questions on concerns the public raised. Ben Hughes the local content advisor for Future Generation addressed the meetings stating his role is to bring together suppliers and buyers and

different stakeholders to create as many opportunities for local businesses and local workers. He highlighted the responsibilities of all parties if they want to be involved in the project and stated all the information is available on the Future Generation website. Jobs will also be listed on Seek and can be viewed by searching ‘Snowy’.

Snowy Mountains Magazine - 2019 - 14

This year Snowy Hydro celebrates the 70th year of the Snowy Scheme. IN October 1949, the then GovernorGeneral Sir William McKell, Prime Minister Ben Chifley and Snowy Mountains Hydro-electricity Authority Commissioner William Hudson fired the first blast at Adaminaby to commence construction on the mighty Snowy Scheme. Now 70 years later the Snowy Scheme will celebrate another milestone anniversary. Celebration events and activities will be held in the coming months, providing the opportunity to reflect on our history and celebrate one of the nation’s greatest engineering achievements. Dates and locations are being finalised for the anniversary with updates and information about 70th events to be listed on the Snowy Hydro website. The beauty of it all can be witnessed in every corner of the Snowy Mountains as nine major power stations and 16 dams form the backbone of the scheme. In addition, 145km of interconnected tunnels and pipeline plus 80km of aqueducts feed water to the power stations.

Broadly the Scheme falls into two sections: the northern Snowy-Tumut development and the southern SnowyMurray development. Both developments are connected by tunnels to the Scheme’s main regulating storage, Lake Eucumbene on the Eucumbene River. The Schemes 9 major power stations – Murray 1, Murray 2, Guthega, Blowering, Tumut 1 (located 366 metres below ground level), Tumut 2 (located 244 metres below ground level), and Tumut 3 plus two smaller recently constructed hydro power stations at Jindabyne and Jounama generate 4100 megawatts (MW) and produce on average, 4500 gigawatt-hours of clean renewable electricity each year During construction of the scheme the towns of Jindabyne and Adaminaby were relocated to higher ground to allow for Lake Jindabyne and Lake Eucumbene to form. The Scheme was designed to collect and store water, including water that would otherwise flow east down the Snowy River

to the coast. Diverting it through transmountain tunnels and power stations and then releasing it west of the Snowy Mountains into the catchments of the Murray River and Murrumbidgee River allowed for irrigation and environmental use plus town water supply. While the diversion of water for irrigation was always the original vision of the Scheme, the engineers were well aware of the potential for the generation of hydroelectricity. The Government was able to pay for the massive undertaking through the sale of that hydro-electricity, making the Scheme a reality.

New Faces of Thredbo Honoured EACH year the Thredbo Historical Society induct two new Faces of Thredbo to the perpetual honour board to recognise those who have made a significant contribution to the skiing and development of Thredbo. At their 2019 mid-winter dinner in July, Ludwig Rabina and Wayne Kirkpatrick were honoured.

Ludwig Rabina (right) with Tommy Tomasi (left).

LUDWIG RABINA Born Ludovit Rabina but known as Ludwig, he was one of many who escaped from Slovakia after the Second World War. He worked against the rise of communism in the underground movement and was warned to flee for his life, arriving in Australia in 1950 as a refugee. He commenced working in Thredbo in

1961 digging the foundations of the Alpine Hotel and in 1962 started his employment with Kosciusko Thredbo (KT) as a chairlift operator. In 1963 KT appointed Ludwig to take over and formalise the ski patrol and he became the first paid patroller and in 1964 incorporated the volunteer patrol. He was responsible for recruitment, conducting rescues and mountain safety, and in 1969 he recruited paid professional patrollers. He became Slopes Manager then Mountain Manager, supervising ski trail cutting, slope grooming, race management and PR. In summer he enjoyed taking visitors on walking tours to Mt Kosciuszko and Dead Horse gap. Nobody made the trek from Eagles Nest to the summit of Kosciuszko more often than Ludwig, including on cross country skis. In 1976 he initiated the Kosciuszko Classic, a 12km race from Eagles Nest to Mt Kosciuszko return as well as the Crackenback Challenge, a gruelling 2km climb of 600 vertical metres from Valley Terminal to Eagles Nest. He died in 2007, having returned to his native Slovakia a few years before, but his 30 year contribution to Thredbo was considerable.

Wayne Kirkpatrick with wife Leslie.

WAYNE KIRKPATRICK Wayne Kirkpatrick came to Thredbo in 1979 after an early career in marketing and advertising. He acquired a job as Kosciusko Thredbo’s Information Officer, but within five years was appointed as the company’s Managing Director. Wayne held this position until 1989, overseeing an upgrade of the mountain with considerable investment in slope grooming, snowmaking, quad chairs and the development at Friday Flat. The culmination of his years in Thredbo was the staging of the 198990 FIS Men’s Alpine World Cup. This was an ambitious undertaking never previously attempted in Australia, but

Snowy Mountains Magazine - 2019 - 19

Wayne saw the World Cup as a means of selling Thredbo to Australia and the world. Lend Lease, looking to make Thredbo attractive to a potential buyer, agreed and developed a master plan to spend $40 million on improvements to the mountain, including facilities to manufacture snow and the development of improved ski runs. Some considered the World Cup to be a serious risk financially and in terms of commercial benefit to the resort, but it brought many positives. The new snowmaking was vital to the event being granted to Thredbo, and Wayne and KT were central to the running of what turned out to be a highly successful event. Many of the world’s top skiers were on show including Pirmin Zurbriggen and Alberto Tomba. The competition was telecast by Channel 9’s Wide World of Sports in Australia and internationally. When Lend Lease sold Kosciusko Thredbo to Greater Union in 1986, Wayne was seconded to the new owner until the conclusion of the Cup. Wayne is now chairman of Tourism Snowy Mountains.

Thredbo powered by Renewable Energy IN an Australian snow industry first, Thredbo announced in July that all their major resort operations are now powered by renewable energy. Reinforcing Thredbo’s core commitment to the environment, the resort has signed a three year agreement with Red Energy to obtain the resort operations’ electricity supply from renewable sources. Thredbo will purchase 9 gigawatt hours of energy per year, the equivalent to the electricity consumed by 1,500 average homes. Thredbo said being in the Snowy Mountains, electricity consumption peaks in the winter months with the addition of snowmaking, heating and guest amenities so this agreement goes a long way to preserving the backyard they love, for future generations. “Becoming powered by renewable energy has been our goal for some time now and by achieving this we’ve set the environmental benchmark for Australian resorts. We are extremely proud to be at the forefront of reducing our carbon footprint into the future,” said Stuart Diver, General Manager of Thredbo. Red Energy is 100% owned by Snowy Hydro, making this a valuable partnership with two local environmentally conscious businesses. Paul Broad, Managing Director of Snowy Hydro said, “This landmark Energy Supply Agreement with Thredbo represents one of the first direct offtakes for ‘firmed’ renewable electricity of this type. On-demand hydro from the mighty Snowy Scheme will underpin our contracted wind and solar generation, meaning Red Energy can supply Thredbo with reliable renewable energy. It’s really satisfying to play our part in

CELEBRATING

21 YEARS

Thredbo’s commitment to reducing their carbon footprint”. The announcement coincided with the launch of Thredbo’s Environmental Week held in late July. The week is designed to raise awareness of the amazing environment Thredbo is located within; together with the initiatives the resort has in place to protect it. Highlights of Thredbo’s Environmental Week included: HIKE TO KOSCIUSZKO WITH TORAH BRIGHT Celebrating the environment with Thredbo’s favourite Ambassador Torah Bright, the community came together in nature’s playground to showcase the environment and what is needed to do to take care of it. The mass hike to the top of Mt Kosciuszko was open for all backcountry snow enthusiasts to show their support. NATIONAL TREE DAY Thredbo has teamed up with Toyota and Greenfleet to make a positive impact on the local community and the environment. Across the weekend of 27-28 July guests purchased a tree for $4.00 that will offset the emissions of their travel to the snow that is then planted regionally. Thredbo matched all weekend donations dollar for dollar. Since 2014, Thredbo guests have offset nearly 8,000 tonnes of carbon emissions by planting over 30,000 trees. “Thredbo understands caring for the environment is a team effort so in collaboration with Protect Our Winters (POW), residents, guests and local businesses, we aim to preserve, protect and prioritise the mountain and its surrounding environment everyone values so much.”

Backcountry Tours

SPEED: Racers blast past Kareela Hutte. PHOTO: Thredbo Resort.

Top to Bottom Après THREDBO’S iconic Top to Bottom race on August 10 attracts a mix of podium seeking racers and enthusiastic competitors who are now contending with the après crowd for top billing. Since the resort revived their après scene six years ago, plus introduced Kareela champagne breakfasts to watch the action, the weekend has attracted not only the gung-ho racers but an enthusiastic après crowd. While they like to ski, their main victory of the day may well be at the Mumm Red Sash Sets in the Alpine Bar. With an early Saturday sunrise start competitors may well have to forfeit the initial celebrations where the number 1 live electronic DJ Duo Mashd N Kutcher kick off the party with Jamie Allan on Friday evening. The Top to Bottom start sees competitors blast down the Supertrail after an all-in start from above Eagles Nest, some 600m of thigh burning hell. Racers begin with their skis and boards in hand and run to launch line before they strap and click in

for a swift schuss to the valley. Along the way they negotiate gates, straights and other racers. There are eight categories contested with over $25,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs. The weekend revellers who opt not to race prefer the sunrise breakfast at Kareela Hutte. Here the vociferous crowd cheer and sip bubbles on the deck and urge racers for more speed as they negotiate the tricky Kareela corner into World Cup. While the victory celebrations take place at the base, breakfast is complete at Kareela and the crowd disperse to the slopes and await the afternoon and evening après scene. Saturday really heats up at the new Alpine Bar with Hot Dub Time Machine, DJ Tom Loud, famous for playing songs in a “strict” chronological order from 1954 to now with enormous mashed visuals all scratched live from vinyl turntables. Supported by Jamie Allan and Falcona DJ’s get set for the party of the season. Visit thredbo.com.au for more details.

FRESH tracks, fresh air and the serenity of the Main Range have lured many new adventurers to experience a Thredbo Backcountry Tour. Launched last season with great success, the six different tours offer a mix to suit the novice who wants to know what is involved, the experienced powder poacher who seeks fresh lines and the adventurer who wants the Mt Kosciuszko bucket list trip of reaching the top of Australia under snow. Guests can choose their respective tour that are graded green, blue and black and all led by experienced and passionate guides who brief you in every aspect of safety in backcountry. Setting out from the top of Thredbo you will find uncrowded slopes with breathtaking views, pristine snow and spectacular scenery. The introductory Signature Peak green tour from the top of Karels is ideal to familiarise yourself with gear and backcountry awareness, plus enjoy the out of resort fresh stashes. The Bogong Creek tour also graded green ventures further afield high above

the Golf Course and Bogong Creek where you have the thrill of being in the backcountry but still at arms length from the resort. The next blue level you can choose from the Mt Kosciuszko or Etheridge Range tour. Standing on top of Mt Kosciuszko is exhilarating in winter and is more an adventure, plus skiing the face of Mt Kosciuszko. Etheridge Range will see you hike several times and each run etch your own style of turns into the powder snow among the granite tors and boulders. For black graded tours, Leatherbarrel Creek is a big day out for experienced adventurers into untouched territory, and the Twin Valleys tour is for the advanced rider seeking longer and steeper terrain with bowls and ridgelines. All Thredbo Backcountry Tours include snow and safety awareness, avalanche safety, backcountry familiarisation, basic navigation and snow survival skills. Interschools Snowsports in Full Swing WE are now in the middle of the busy Interschools events season after starting the season in June with two new participation events in our schedule. The SSA SUBARU Interschools Participation and Development Series at Perisher was targeted at new participants to the sport as well as those looking for a practice ahead of the Interschools Championships. The event day included a time trial for Alpine and Snowboard GS.

athlete pathway to parents and schoolaged athletes through official appearances at Interschools presentations and club events. Our 2019 Interschools Ambassadors include Zoe Spanos, Antonia Murphy, Theodore Coates, Jack Adams and Saskia Fawcett, all former Interschools athletes who currently still compete in national and international FIS events. We look forward to working more with this new team throughout the 2019 winter season and beyond. The three Regional Interschools Championships were held in July and saw record entries achieved. Over 3,000 entries were reached at the Travelplan Ski Northern NSW & Queensland Championships (Perisher – July 9 to 13) where 1,387 students from 228 schools competed. This event saw a 10% increase from the previous year. The Travelplan Ski Sydney Regional Championships (Thredbo – July 16 to 20) saw 1,061 students compete from 72 schools with a total of 2,310 entries across the 5 snow sport disciplines; Alpine, Ski cross, Moguls, Snowboard GS and Snowboard Cross. The SUBARU ACT-Southern NSW

STAR: Two juniors meet Olympic snowboarder Adam Lambert and Sophie from Perisher snowsports school. Regional Championships (Perisher – July 24 to 26) entry numbers continue to grow too, with a 5% increase in entries from last year. The event reached 2,147 entries from 1,039 students at 117 schools. We now look ahead to the SUBARU SSA Northern States Interschools Championships August 20-25 at Perisher for NSW, ACT and QLD competitors who qualified from the Regional Championships. READY: Kids at the participation event in June.

“We had just under 100 athletes and their families attend and participate in these new ‘Come-and-Try’ events, and a fabulous time was had by all,” said Steve Cooper. “Attendees received a range of added surprises, including Interschools backpacks and our Subaru cow-bells to ‘ring’ the participants down the slopes, with some of the youngest being only five years of age.” “We look forward to building these events in future years, and it was also a great way for us to celebrate World Olympian Day (June 23), with participants able to chat with OWIA Snowboard Cross Olympic Athlete – Adam Lambert who attended and participated in the day.” On June 30 at the Interschools Participation and Development Series, we launched the new Interschools Ambassador Program where the newly appointed ambassadors were on hand to give advice to participants on the time trial during course inspection and at the top of the course. The Interschools Ambassadors will continue to provide expertise to the community sport sector, providing inspiration and advice on navigating the

Cool Times at Interschools It’s the biggest school-based snow sports competition in the world, and Danielle Cook takes a look at what the thousands of young skiers and boarders expect to gain from competing in the Interschools Snowsports Championships. And it’s a formula that works incredibly well. Last year, there were around 20,000 entries from across Australia at the regional, state and national championships. The three NSW regional championships alone had participation by 385 schools with more than 7,000 entries. Only a handful of Interschools competitors can ever hope to reach the pinnacle of competition, but almost all of snowsports athletes who represent Australia have raced at Interschools in the early stages of their careers. At least 20 of Australia’s winter Olympians started out at NSW & ACT Interschools Snowsports Championships, according to the Interschools handbook. One of those is the former Australian Olympic mogul skier, Manuela Berchtold. The Jindabyne local has fond memories of those first NSW Interschools championships in the late 1980s. “I remember it being so much fun, Manuela says. But more important were the life-long friendships that she forged

â—ź FOCUS: A racer at the State Championships in 2018. PHOTO: Steve Cuff. during those early days of Interschools competition. “One of my best snowsports friends is Alice Jones, who is now Alice Chilcott, and we competed together at the 2002 Olympics,â€? Manuela says. Alice and Manuela both attended Monaro High School and began competing against each other at Interschools. “I remember one year, I may have been in Year 9 and she was in Year 10. Alice decided to compete in the moguls

event at Interschools against me. Can you believe that she beat me? I was so devastated that an alpine skier had beaten me at my own game, but that Interschools experience taught me so much about healthy competition. It’s those experiences that help shape the type of people you are and will become. While it is more serious for some racers, for most they are there to enjoy the racing so be encouraging no matter what their result.

ACCORDING to the NSW Interschools promotional material, the focus is on fun and participation. It’s about being part of a team, skiing and boarding with friends and making new friends from other schools. Jonathan Mandl agrees. As the Technical Director of Snowsports with Canberra’s private school, Radford College, he manages a team of around 65 young snowsports athletes each year who train for and then compete in Interschools championships. “For the majority of our team, they just love the social aspect of Interschools,â€? says Jonathan. “It’s about having fun, competing as a team and showing the very best they can do no matter what level they are at. “There is a lack of boundaries between age groups on the snow that doesn’t happen at school. They are bound by a common love of snow and snowsports. It’s cool, it’s fun and it’s deďŹ nitely better than a day in the classroom or stacking the dishwasher for Mum at home.â€?

Navigating Perisher YOU don’t need a GPS when you ski in the resort, the trail map offers you more than enough information and directions. But does your thinking change this year about where you ski and where you start because Perisher have their new Leichhardt Chair in Centre Valley. Do you head there on your first day just to tick it off your list, or do you eventually weave your way over just to make sure it is done on this holiday. That is the beauty of Perisher, it is BIG. The biggest in the Southern Hemisphere in fact, so you do have multitudes of options. It’s always interesting to see where Perisher visitors gravitate. Following everyone else is not always the best decision. Here are a few of our favourite runs that you may not have skied previously. Making the trip from the top of Perisher Quad chair to Guthega can be a long journey, but one of the best green runs is without doubt the Pleasant View run from near the top of Pleasant Valley at a left angle all the way to the Freedom Chair. The groomed run is easy enough, but you can have a small adventure cruising in the trees in the powder if it has snowed. Trees are reasonably spaced, and it is a great introductory run if you have not skied much powder previously. At Guthega, The Screw is rated a black run, which really is because

VIEW: Skiing Parachute at Guthega.

it is off piste and does have some interesting humps and hollows. But when the snow is on, this is one of the best runs at Guthega that is super fun. Just memorise the bumps for the second trip and make sure you ski it all the way to the bottom traverse. Although it often means a slow double chair ride back, the Woodpecker, Wombats and on occasions Parachute if conditions are good are often less skied, and if you are heading to Guthega Pub for lunch, they are a great option. On page 30 we talk about expansion plans for Mt Perisher, and one of the less skied runs is GS

Bowl, to the skiers right of Towers. Everyone likes the groomed Mt Perisher, but this off piste run is always rewarding and brings you to the International T-bar. Why this T-bar is mostly deserted still astounds, especially with Hypertrail another great groomed run. But hey leave it for the people in the know….! When the weather is atrocious plan to ski Smiggins. Yes, the runs are shorter, but you are sheltered from the weather, not too many people ski off piste and you can find some great powder. Plus, the Smiggins Hotel is a great lunch stop.

Shifty’s 90th Birthday WHEN you have a run named after you and are considered a Perisher legend, a 90th birthday is just as big for Grant ‘Shifty’ Turnbull’s friends as the man himself, and they gathered at Perisher’s Eiger Chalet in June for a good old fashion roasting, drinks and dinner. Grant started out at Charlotte Pass

in 1959 before ski patrolling and then instructing at Perisher from 1964. He received a telegram of congratulations from the Packer family on the night and a few key friends from Perisher and his beloved North Bondi Surf Club revealed his past and various pursuits with the women that had the crowd in laughter.

A Snowshoe Stroll

By Steve Cuff NATURE is always inviting you to explore more in the mountains and one of the easiest ways to venture away from the mainstream slopes is to try snowshoeing. It’s just like walking, except you have snowshoes to keep you on top of the snow and makes walking relatively easy. Having ski poles to use is an advantage, but not entirely necessary. But they did prove handy on the steeper descends for stability.

Plus, you don’t need to be super fit to walk on the snow covered roads and trails that are close to the resorts. Looking for something different last season, we rented snowshoes from Wilderness Sports in Jindabyne, drove to Perisher and set off for an afternoon walk from the Perisher Skitube towards Eyre T-bar. Once opposite Eyre there are signs for the cross-country tracks to circumnavigate Mt Wheatley, but we opted for a short climb over the top for great views of Mt Perisher. You then descend

towards the South Perisher lodges. There are many scenic and more exciting trips to escape further afield but be sure to allow yourself enough time to return. Knowing how many kilometres you can walk in soft snow will determine how far to try if it is your first time. And be prepared with enough food, water and clothing to suit the weather. The beauty of a short walk is you only need snacks, water and a map of where you are going should you venture out of sight of the resort. Bring a backpack and pack an extra layer or two. For a longer trip you would be advised to consider the weather forecast for the day, or overnight if you are camping out. The last problem you need is to be stranded or lost in a whiteout and not be sure of your intended direction. If you have no experience, it is highly

recommended to join with a tour guide who has all the knowledge and experience, especially for longer adventures. The serenity once you are away from the masses is relaxing to say the least and you never know what scenery you will encounter. Finding trees saturated in warm colours in the middle of winter was a pleasant surprise. Each resort has numerous areas to explore and for more information contact K7 Adventures for tours (see ad page 26) or to just hire gear visit Wilderness Sports in Jindabyne (ph 6456 2966) or their Perisher store in the National Parks building.

Future 6 Seater for Mt Perisher

PERISHER have so far had a big season, the resort opened early and the new Leichhardt Chair was operating prior to the June long weekend. The new chair has been well received but realistically it is just a link in the chain that allows future expansion for Mt Perisher. In a wide-ranging exclusive interview with Peter Brulisauer, Vail Resorts Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer

Australia and Perisher, he explained what is next in their plans regarding a new sixseater chair for Mt Perisher. Additionally, they would like to expand the Towers run wider and move the snowmaking accordingly. “We don’t have a timeline for constructing that chair,” said Brulisauer. “We are still going through the planning process and we hope to lodge a DA

(development application) for the chairlift later this year.” The chair is expected to take the line of the existing triple chair but Brulisauer said there is still some different thinking and they have not finalised plans yet. “We are really happy with how that thinking is shaping up, but it’s a really big project.” “The principle is to take the six seater

from the bottom of Mt Perisher to the top, pull out the double and the triple and do a bunch of slope grooming on Towers run, to make it wider and push the snowmaking back a bit further to skiers right. “We really want to end up with another run in the resort like Roller Coaster, Excelerator, Zalis that are nice and wide. In recent years our guests have been flocking to Blue Cow and Guthega for those sorts of runs so we really want to try and create something similar on Mt Perisher, acknowledging that off to the side of Towers there’s still all the traditional type terrain that Mt Perisher will offer. “I think one exciting part is we will certainly have to rename the run because it will no longer be Towers. Right now you are dodging twenty something towers, so it will be less than half the number of towers that we currently have and it will greatly open up the skiing.” When suggested that to the skiers’ right there is room to expand Towers run wider, Brulisauer acknowledged as much. “We are currently working through what the environmental impacts of that are and just where to best widen. We want to try and widen it as a principle but there are some areas really difficult environmentally and other areas that are easier.”

As part of the plans the Mt Perisher restaurant at the base of the double chair will be upgraded but at this stage there is no plans to move the restaurant. “We are looking at a couple of different options to make a bigger restaurant, we obviously know that the F and B (food and beverage) facilities over there have to be significantly improved to cater for what we expect. A lot more people will come from the Blue Cow, Guthega side of the resort back to ski Mt P.” “I think that’s what happens when you build new stuff, it would have been 2004, 5, 6 we put snowmaking in on Roller Coaster and then we automated that over the next couple of years, and Excelerator as well and that really improved that triangle of skiing. “Then we put the Freedom Chair in and that added another element of new terrain in many ways, and more people have gone

to that side of the hill. “I think with a wider run here and a great high speed six, we will see more people come back this side and they will want to have some great eating, drinking and toilet facilities on this side of the hill as well.” When queried about the data and traffic movement of skiers across the resort accessible via the RFID pass, Brulisauer said they 100% they see those patterns on a weekly basis. “We are really keen to put this chairlift on Mt Perisher and see how it changes the dynamic of how people use the resort, but I think it will.” “Just the extra lift capacity on Mt Perisher and the great quality run, and we already know the snowmaking up there works really well, we will see more people come over and use this side of the hill.” The current Mt Perisher double chair is 2034m, three metres less than the current highest lifted point in Australia, Thredbo’s Karels T-bar. When asked will the new chair be the highest lifted point Brulisauer responded, “You will have to wait and see”. “I guess when that lift is built, we will see how high it is and we will see how high everyone else goes, but that is not our focus.” “Our focus is really to make sure that we design this lift in a way that is going to provide great skiing on Mt Perisher for

the next 30 years, and it works well in the wind and that the towers are located well so that the skiing is not interrupted.” Commenting on the wind hold, we asked does Doppelmayr have a chair to suit and do they monitor how many days they expect chairs on Mt Perisher to be on wind hold each season. “The double obviously goes on wind hold the most in the resort. And that is just a reflection of how engineering has improved over the years to safely enable you to run chairlifts in wind. The best illustration of that is the eight seater on Front Valley that very rarely stops due to wind, big heavy chairs with eight people on them and good safety systems. They are pretty reliable and sure it is more

sheltered down here as well but still, on some of those days when it’s still just as windy down here the V8 still chug along.” “Our expectation is Mt Perisher will become a lot more reliable.” “Getting Leichhardt done was a key plank in being able to go to Mt Perisher and talk about expansion in that area. Leichhardt enables us to bring people back more effectively than the old T-bar. “We are working on a bunch of things beyond Mt Perisher to try and improve the skier experience, but in the short term we are really pleased, in 2014 we built the Freedom Chair, and five years later we are putting another chair in, and we’re excited to plan what Mt Perisher might look like in the future.”

Help Raise Funds for Disabled Wintersport IN August Disabled Wintersport Australia will be hosting their National Disabled Winter Sport Day (NDWSD) followed by a fundraising evening at Jindabyne’s Memorial Hall. Thousands of people living with disabilities and their families and carers travel to the Australian snow fields and without the help of DWA they otherwise might not visit. The DWA group have hundreds of volunteers who help people each season experience the snow. NATIONAL DISABLED WINTER SPORT DAY - FRIDAY AUGUST 16 The aim of the NDWSD is to raise awareness and inclusion while celebrating courage, adventure and fun in the snow. DWA invites everyone to join them at their Thredbo, Friday Flat clubhouse on August 16 from 9.30am to 12 noon where you can meet members, athletes and guides and see the specialist adaptive equipment. As part of this day DWA is also hosting a presentation on adaptive skiing by sits skiers Gretta Servo and Kate Swain. Introduced by DWA, Gretta and Kate will share her story and passion for snowsports including time for questions and socialising.

DWA members, guides, instructors and all interested parties are invited to attend this free presentation at the Jindabyne Sport and Recreation Centre’s convention rooms from 5pm to 6pm with canapés and refreshments provided. DWA is also the National Sporting Organisation accredited for the delivery of disabled winter sports across five Australian alpine resorts and has been helping people find freedom on the snow since 1978. From hesitant first timers through to our Paralympians, DWA provides equal opportunity and pathways to people with disabilities to find freedom on the snow. DWA currently have over 1000 members who utilise and rely on their services, equipment, staff and volunteer guides. WINTERFUN’D FUNDRAISER SATURDAY - AUGUST 17 For the past two years, DWA held a successful fundraising night at Jindabyne Brewing and the event was so well attended that they have decided to expand for 2019. This year they have given the event a name, WINTERFUN’d - A Social Night of Fundraising. The night is Disabled Wintersport Australia’s major NSW fundraiser of the year at Jindabyne’s

Upgrading Your Skis THE snow has fallen, the mountains are looking great but are you getting the best out of your skis. If your current skis are old and you ski regular those planks may well have lost some of their zip and life. After all nothing lasts forever. New ski equipment has continued to evolve with the latest technology and while the ski companies will impress you with their smart marketing, the best way to know how a ski performs is to test skis before you buy. There are great skis on the market these days, but not all will be suited ‘exactly’ to you. Everyone has their individual style so don’t just rely on your mate’s advice. Here a few tips to help you decide. INTERMEDIATE SKIER Be truthful to yourself when assessing your ability, as you don’t want a super stiff ski if you are only an intermediate. If your preference is to only cruise the groomed corduroy blue runs and you never venture off piste, you may want to consider a ski that is 80mm or under in

X Country Skill

width. The ski should be ‘about’ your chin in length. This style of ski will still give you a stable platform and with most skis having good shape and sidecut, they will be easy to turn. Intermediate skis tend to be lighter which is ideal. UPPER INTERMEDIATE You ski the groomed runs but often like to try the off piste and sometimes powder. Your best option might be to choose something slightly wider, from 80mm to 90mm but still an intermediate ski, not an advanced ski. The softer flexing lighter ski will be forgiving but the extra width will help you as the terrain changes in the off piste. Length can be from your chin to your nose.

The Kastle MX all mountain ski.

ADVANCED Most advanced skiers have been skiing long enough to have a better

understanding of what they prefer. Blasting down the Thredbo Supertrail or the Ridge at Perisher a narrower ski of 80mm or less is more favourable for groomed runs only. Advanced skis will be stiffer as stronger technique allows you to bend this ski. People wanting to attack the whole mountain have multiple choices and often the ski can be dictated by how big and strong the skier is and how fast they ski. The length of the ski is at your nose or longer. Visit a reputable ski shop who can give you good advice and who also allow you to demo skis before you buy. Testing skis in the mountains is ideal as you can try several during your week holiday. Also look at the calendar for demo days. This is only a guide to get you started and once you try skis you will find you like some more than others.

The Travelling Snow World ONE of the great aspects of snow travel is no matter where you visit, whatever country and resort you choose the chances are you either bump into someone you know, or a long time friend. It nearly seems uncanny. Everyone has their own version of this scenario, but we think Canadian schoolboy friends Eric Chabot and Chris Ebbern have an interesting tale of connecting again. Eric now runs the Jindy Inn in Jindabyne with wife Claire, who he met in Canada. Chris Ebbern is a freestyle coach who formerly worked at Perisher and now coaches the Alberta Park and Pipe Team. The boys first met in high school in Barrie, Ontario and became good friends in grades 9-12 before venturing their separate ways. Their lives occasionally crossed paths and then last season Chris’s team stayed at the Jindy Inn with Eric and Claire. Eric’s snow story is an interesting one, having grown up with a skiing family his brother, five years older called him from Whistler in 1997 and offered the then 18 year old Eric a job. “My brother was a lift supervisor and he calls me up three weeks before my examines and says ‘I’ve got a job here if

you want it’ and I’m like, I am just about to do my exams,” said Eric. “He tells me ‘you’ve got to be here in a week’ and I said, let me see what I can do. So I went to the principal and showed her my grades and my grades were good enough, so I got exempted out of all my exams and I headed to Whistler.” “It was crazy, I was eighteen in Whistler, it was an eye opener.” Eric met Australian girl Claire in Whistler in 1998. When Eric returned home Claire, who was travelling across Canada secured a nanny job near Eric’s home where they started dating. Having completed a commercial diving course, Eric came to Australia with Claire who returned home to the Gold Coast. They travelled for a while and were married. Eric found work as a commercial diver on Sydney Harbour where he and Claire lived for 11 years. Claire had jobs at Virgin Airlines and Commonwealth Bank before they both decided to sell up and visit Jindabyne. Claire commenced a job at the Jindy Inn in 2015, before they both eventually acquired the leasehold for the Jindy Inn in 2016. As a kid growing up in Canada Chris Ebbern said their whole group would ski around Snow Valley and “cause chaos on the mountain”. “It wasn’t a big hill, there were a lot of straight lining and hitting jumps.” Having gravitated to Fernie in British Columbia, where he instructed, he would end up travelling to Perisher via an exchange program in 2000. He would work five seasons at Perisher and coached some of Australia’s leading freestyle skiers. “I knew nothing about Australian skiing, I knew kangaroos and Crododile Dundee.” “It was such a cool experience being 20 years old and travelling across the world

skiing, which was my passion and what I wanted to do. To top it off I was just getting into competitive skiing and they had a scene here.” They both kept in touch briefly over the years and Chris also spent time on the Gold Coast. Eric visited on one occasion but the two had not really seen other that much since leaving school. “You forget, I showed up here last year and totally forgot that Eric moved to

Jindabyne and bought a hotel,” said Chris. “I was booking this accommodation and totally forgot I had some connections here, it is a small world but also a big world. He has treated us amazing and for my team and what we are doing, it is ideal.” Eric said they don’t often host teams, but they would like to have more stay, and Chris and the Alberta boys will be back again this winter.

Vision for Jindabyne

An aerial view of Jindabyne. PHOTO: Dave Birss / Epsom Studios.

By Steve Cuff

The 10 Principles 1) Jindabyne is a multimodal and connected town, with pedestrian links, cycle routes, sustainable transport alternatives, improved road safety, and better managed congestion and car parking, that together, enhance mobility around town and access to the mountains and other towns in the area. 2) Jindabyne is an accessible community that supports aging in place, with access to healthcare and aged care facilities to meet the needs of people of all ages and abilities. 3) Jindabyne’s unique alpine environment continues to support yearround tourism and sustainable activities, particularly by protecting natural areas, enhancing access to Lake Jindabyne, activating its waterfront and adopting renewable energy. 4) Jindabyne has accessible and modern community, arts and culture, recreation and education facilities, including new opportunities for tertiary education. 5) Jindabyne’s housing choices are

affordable and cater for a variety of household types that are suitable for residents, seasonal workers and shortterm visitors. 6) Jindabyne’s built form is respectful, sustainable and enhances the town’s alpine character and country town charm. 7) Jindabyne’s employment lands provide opportunities for established and emerging businesses, which assist with business attraction and retention, supports more jobs and fosters a diversified, year-round economy. 8) Jindabyne has a united, vibrant and safe town centre where locals and visitors can gather, supported by public spaces, mixed uses and walkable streetscapes. 9) Jindabyne has high quality public open spaces that are co-located with community facilities, as well as local walking and cycling trails that connect the town to surrounding trails in the region. 10) Jindabyne’s Aboriginal culture and heritage is recognised and celebrated throughout the town.

THE Jindabyne 2036 Masterplan is in full development phase with up to 50 personnel currently working on the project. It is expected the masterplan will be available for public exhibition during September. The Vision for Jindabyne, a document that highlights the 10 principles (see left) that will guide the masterplan content was released in July. Snowy Mountains Magazine spoke to NSW Planning, Industry and Environment Principal Planner Rukshan de Silver in mid-July to enquire how the plan was evolving. Rukshan said when creating the masterplan they are trying to make something that will actually embody those vision principles which was a priority for the community. As well as the vision document, Rukshan said the planners have made numerous technical studies that provides the information that informs the masterplan. Invested in these studies is copious amounts of content and research which eventuated from the many community meetings conducted. Once the masterplan

is published, each technical study will also have available an individual document, which could be upwards of 200 pages per study. Technical studies include: Demographic, Housing, Transport, Infrastructure and Service, Environment and Heritage plus Economic Development and Tourism. Additionally, they have been in constant communication with approximately 25 people who are involved with different strategic working groups. “Because we have the new vision for the town and these 10 principles that will guide the masterplan, this group is able to help us evaluate our concepts and ideas against the 10 principles,” said Rukshan. As the NSW Planners decipher more

information, they test various scenarios with the working groups to obtain feedback on different subjects. “When we were here in May we had a postcard activity, we asked people in town far and wide to write a postcard to themselves in 20 years from now, Jindabyne in the future and to tell us what they saw. We got nearly one thousand postcards and we put them altogether and it’s resulted in this vision. “There were a lot of common themes that came up and this vision, it is essentially the story of Jindabyne in the future. When you are walking down the streets of Jindabyne in 20 year’s time what do you want it to be, if you read that vision it really captures all those different

ideas in one place.” One of the common themes he said the community wanted was to respect the environment. This plus connectiveness of the town were paramount. Among many other subjects, planners are also looking at how they will integrate the existing approved development with their new visions and future development. At present there are several housing developments in play, mainly Alpine Sands precinct and the Highview Estate on the higher side of the Jindabyne township. There is projected significant growth for Jindabyne, and one major component of the masterplan will look at housing and the effects various sectors will have on the future development. “We are doing projections for the visitor population, the permanent resident population and also the seasonal worker population. They are all three very different populations, they are connected to each other but they have implications on what housing needs to be applied to each.” The planners see many of the issues that Jindabyne are experiencing at present relate to seasonal peaks and lows in the year round cycle. If Jindabyne can create a more year round economy it would balance out the town to have less peaks and troughs.

Discover Canada MAKING the decision to visit Canada is easy, the Canadians are fun loving friendly people and really do connect with Australians. Plus, they have big mountains, great scenery and extensive choices when it comes to the best ski resorts. Here are a few of the best to consider from Mogul Ski World that boast big numbers including big vertical and big terrain. WHISTLER BLACKCOMB Mention Whistler resort to those who have visited and expect to be lectured on everything that is great in a snow resort. It’s big, very big, has seemingly unlimited terrain for every level, kilometres of blue run cruisers, 16 powder filled bowls and for those chasing the steeps, multiple double black super steep chutes and couloirs. Whistler and Blackcomb mountains sit adjacent to each other and have impressive vertical of 1530m and 1565m respectively, essentially presenting you two resorts in one behemoth resort. The biggest decisions are often where to start. Both mountains have their own distinct feel and funnel all the way down into Whistler Village, or should you decide

to switch mountains from the alpine, ride the Peak to Peak cable car across the valley. The charming village just oozes winter wonderland, but the big appeal is the abundance of snow they receive, 11.6 metres annually, allowing you great skiing and boarding options. You simply never get bored and it would take you seasons to ski it all, let alone your two-week holiday. Easy access direct from Vancouver and a must visit for every snow lover. PANORAMA MOUNTAIN RESORT While Panorama may not have been on the snow enthusiasts’ radar previously, it certainly should be now as this ski in ski out village is hot news of late. Boasting the third biggest vertical rise in Canada at 1300 metres, Panorama is a mountain resort and alpine village in the Purcell Mountains of British Columbia and only a 3.5 hour drive from Calgary, the nearest big city. With intermediate terrain occupying 55% of the mountain, it is perfectly suited to the Australian skier to cruise what has been described as endless boulevards of corduroy. One of the beauties of Panorama is it also has less crowds meaning when

it snows there are more fresh tracks for you. Think open glades and endless turns through snow filled pristine pine trees. To add to its impressive vertical, 2975 acres of terrain and its big mountain feel, the resort recently expanded into Taynton Bowl with a further 128 acres of off-piste backcountry style terrain. This is the first phase of as multi stage terrain expansion to open up new alpine areas. REVELSTOKE When you have the biggest vertical in North America with a descent of 1713 metres, the iconic ‘Snowy Rodeo’ signature run from the summit to the valley is nearly a holiday by itself. Yes, long runs backed up by 10.5 metres of annual snow should catch your attention, but if that is not enough you have three of the leading heli skiing operations right next door. Which is reassuring knowing they are based there for the renowned Selkirk and Monashee powder, of which you can ski within the resort. Revelstoke really has something for everyone from the 44% intermediate terrain, a new quad chair going in this summer and the town itself which offers a true Canadian holiday experience.

Whether you stay on snow or in the town itself, only 7km away, you will be assured the authentic friendly Canadians will be welcoming you, and maybe a bit jealous you are skiing if they are working. Revelstoke has a history steeped in skiing and a collective passion for all things winter. Located on the powder highway in central British Columbia, Revy as it is referred to offers plenty of stoke for the avid snow visitor, just be sure you have some stoke in your legs for all that terrain.

Memorable and Magical at Big White LOOKING for a ski resort that’s the perfect mix of convenient, memorable and magical? Look no further than Big White Ski Resort in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada, known as Canada’s favourite family resort, and with good reason – it’s ALL about family here. With something always going on here’s the full guide to making the most of each hour of the day as a family. 8am: Wake up in paradise Get to Big White by flying direct to Vancouver, followed up with a quick 45-minute connecting flight to Kelowna and a 55-minute shuttle to the mountain. Big White is Canada’s largest ski-in, ski-out resort village, making for great accommodation options for families looking to get comfortable in a snowy home away from home. Top picks include Sundance Resort just above the Bullet Express chairlift, which features a heated outdoor pool, waterslide, hot tubs, kids room, movie theatre, fitness centre and more; Copper Kettle Lodge, full of luxe units that offer up stone fireplaces, granite benchtops and private hot tubs; and Trappers Crossing, modern multi-level townhouses that offer ski-to/ski-from access from Perfection Run, as well as

FUN: Enjoy quality family time in the snow.

easy access to the village centre just across the road. For the ultimate parenting hack, order your groceries online at Vacation Foods before you arrive on the mountain, and have them delivered directly to your condo. 8:45am: Have the instructors pick the kids up Parenting hack number two, coming right up. Big White has an award-winning ski school, and instructors will pick the kids up from your accommodation for their lesson. While the kids enjoy the Kids Centre (they may never want to leave), the grown-ups can get exploring on the mountain. Sign up for adult’s lessons, join a complimentary Snow Host Tour at 10:30am daily to get the local down-low on the best runs, or hop on a chairlift and see where the runs take you. With 118 runs in total across the mountain and a green run from the top of every chairlift, it’s easy to explore a whole lot of terrain regardless of ability level. And did we mention over seven metres of natural snowfall each season? 12:30pm: Lunchtime When it’s time to have lunch with the family, head to any one of the resort’s 18 on-mountain dining options for familyfriendly dining options. A favourite is Globe Cafe & Tapas Bar for Tabletop S’mores. Think graham crackers, a chocolate ganache and homemade giant marshmallows delivered to the table with your own personal tabletop firepit. 2pm: Fun times in Happy Valley Work off the sugar rush at Happy Valley, which is paradise for kids. Accessible throughout the day and night thanks to the complimentary Lara’s Gondola, it’s a hub of activities: dog-sledding, tubing, snowmobiling (including mini kid-sized snowmobiles), snowshoeing and ice skating/fun little hockey games on Canada’s

highest outdoor skating rink. There’s even an ice-climbing tower, where those of all ages can strap crampons to their boots and attempt to ring the bell at the top. 5pm: Go night skiing – or horse sleigh riding Five nights a week, the lights come on and the lifts start spinning for night skiing at Big White. With access to 2569 metres of terrain, it makes for Western Canada’s largest night skiing area, with the longest vertical drop in North America. When it’s time to settle in under the starry winter sky, opt for a magical nighttime experience with the on-mountain horse sleigh rides. Cosy up under a blanket and enjoy hot chocolate while gliding through snow-covered forest trails during the ride; you can even take the entire family to a gourmet dinner in a cosy cabin in the middle of the woods for a dining experience that’ll be one for the family bucket list. 7pm: Carnival night and fireworks Big White hosts a huge range of free activities throughout the week for families – including Family Games Night, Bingo Night, free hot chocolate nights and twice-weekly Carnival Nights, along with fireworks every Saturday night. The perfect end to a perfect day… until you wake up and do it all over again. Check out bigwhite.com for further information and accommodation packages.

SilverStar - The Undiscovered Gem By Megan Pustetto

This year’s state budget was a huge win for Monaro with investments in education, roads and infrastructure that will support our community for generations. I am thrilled to be delivering high schools for Bungendore and Jerrabomberra, the expansion of Jindabyne Central School, as well as funding for Googong Public School, all of which were included in the budget. It will be exciting to see students across the Monaro receiving the very best education close to home. Also included in the budget was funding for a new school hall at Queanbeyan West, to fit all the students in together. I know how crucial a hall is to school spirit and the community. More opportunities are being created for Jindabyne students looking to take on further education, with a new connected TAFE Learning Centre set to provide the fundamental next step in education the community requires. We have also seen a great amount of funding dedicated to major roads in the region, which is the start of a four year investment in regional roads across the Monaro. Transport and safety are a priority, with the first allocations towards the $20 million Kings Highway and $20 million Monaro Highway safety upgrades. Bus services are set to expand in the Queanbeyan district, with the NSW Government working to ensure public transport is accessible for those living in the regions. There will be accessibility upgrades at the Queanbeyan Train Station to make sure it is user friendly for everyone and the Regional Seniors Transport Card will become active in January 2020. There are key infrastructure projects taking place too, including $9 million for the first stage of the Queanbeyan Courthouse upgrade and $817,000 towards the Braidwood Police Station upgrade. An incredible $7 million has been allocated to the Thredbo Valley Track extension to improve tourist infrastructure in Jindabyne, and $9.3 million is going towards the major upgrade of Cooma Hospital. The next four years are an exciting time for the Monaro, we can see with the projects listed above just how much is going on, and there is more to come. Our communities deserve the very best and I am proud to be delivering key infrastructure, education and roads for you.

REMEMBER when Bali was an undiscovered paradise? A rare occasion where if you were lucky enough your parents would treat the family to an overseas holiday once every two years to tick the cultural box of your upbringing. It was cheap, close enough to home and it didn’t have the crowds many other overseas destinations were swamped with. But slowly, everyone else caught onto this little off-thebeaten-track tropical getaway. The same could be said for many ski destinations. A google search of ‘the most famous places to go skiing’ will bring up the obvious choices: Whistler, Vail, Aspen, St. Anton, St Moritz, Zermatt, Cortina D’Ampezzo and Niseko. These hotspots have long been held in high esteem by the ‘rich and famous’ for their elite snow, but they’ve also become somewhat of a Catch-22. Their snow fields are no longer exclusive and have become busier than a Balinese street - and every true skier knows that’s not an ideal environment if you really want to ski. While a bustling hotel and busy streets may be what some travellers search for in a holiday, every true skier knows that the best way to experience the snow is when there aren’t many people around. When you want to ski well you need space: uncluttered slopes and vacant runs, and SilverStar Mountain Resort has both. The ubiquitous yet humble alpine ace sits atop a mixed terraneous mountain in British Columbia, Canada, and while it isn’t on the map as much as other ski resorts, that’s exactly why it’s so appealing. While it has largely flown under the radar, SilverStar is the third largest ski resort in British Columbia sitting on an impressive

3,282 skiable Acres (1,328 Hectares). With over 132 runs, it’s variety of terrain is what sets it apart from other mountains. With an annual snowfall of 7metres+ all-natural dust that has been nicknamed ‘Okanagan Champagne Powder’, the snow quality is unrivalled to its distant overseas relatives. Consider SilverStar the quiet achiever of ski resorts. Many of the top ski destinations have become ‘too touristy’ and now for many it’s all about queuing in long lift lines just so they can say they went ‘there’ to their followers on social media, and not about the snow or the ride, which is why many fervent skiers are noticing the beauty of SilverStar. One of them being Rod Katz, who first visited SilverStar in 2001 and has been every year since and now refers to it as his “favourite place.” “I had some friends rave about it,” he says. “We had been to Whistler, Aspen-Snowmass and many European resorts but when we first went to SilverStar we thought ‘wow’ – this is seriously perfect” “We took our four-year-old daughter into the horse drawn sleigh around the icy pond and she just could not believe it,” he recalls. “You can make your most magical dreams about what a snow holiday experience should become true. It’s just perfect.” But while Rod adores the familyfriendly sides of the resort, he mostly appreciates what the locals endearingly refer to as the ‘backside’ – the vast terrain that consists of more challenging slopes

BLAST: Relishing the Okanagan Champagne Powder. PHOTO: SilverStar / Will Evans. that he says hasn’t received the street cred it deserves. “Brilliant blacks that are just so good which feels like you could be skiing in back-country terrain because there’s no one on the runs. You don’t feel like it’s’ another day commuting on a ‘busy street’ like you would in Australia, you feel like you’re having an out-thereexperience.” “You can do the extreme or difficult runs if you want a challenge or the intermediate or easy runs if you want to have a cruiser ride, so it caters to all different needs and wants.” His advice to first timers to SilverStar? “If you’re really keen, you get there first thing in the morning when they let the rope down and discover some fabulous snow,” he says. “It really is a ‘heart in your mouth experience’.” Our advice? Experience SilverStar before everyone else does and it becomes another “famous” ski resort bursting at the seams. Tick SilverStar off your bucket list this season.

THUNDEROUS serpentine space-rock and smouldering falsetto R’nB. Stadium supports for Aerosmith and AC/DC and earnest covers of Destiny’s Child and First Aid Kit. Flybynight gigs in war-torn Afghanistan and recurring religious pilgrimages to the wood-grained heart of Nashville. Welcome to the world of Kingswood. Don’t be confused by the veneer. Like the iconic Aussie car of the same name, it’s all about what’s under the hood. “We wanted to make something that would rival Abbey Road, guitarist Alex Laska told Rolling Stone magazine in the throes of their second album, After Hours, Close to Dawn. “I know it sounds insane but if you don’t strive for that kind of

thing, what are you doing? Seriously, what are you doing?â€? The goal posts refuse to yield on the Melbourne rock quartet’s third album, currently under construction across four studios in Sydney and Nashville. The ďŹ rst taste, Messed It Up — all sinewy synthsoul compulsion with a restless rock undertow — presages another stunning act of evolution. “We’re a band that, in a philosophical way, wants to continue to change,â€? says singer Fergus Linacre. “We don’t want to make the same record twice and the support we’ve received so far has made us realise that we actually can do whatever we want. It’s a great position to be in.â€? More gig guide info on page 54.

SSA Futures Celebrates 17th Year SSA Futures continues to engage developing ski and snowboard athletes by providing expert coaching and pathway education. SSA Futures is a Ski & Snowboard Australia (SSA) athlete development and talent identiďŹ cation program. Engaging the highest proďŹ le athletes and national coaches together with the sport’s brightest rising stars, the program aims to enhance the opportunities and resources for emerging athletes in the SSA athlete pathway. The SSA Futures program was ďŹ rst introduced over 16 years ago and has operated across all the major Australian Resorts during this period. With over 60 programs and more than 1500 participants, the SSA Futures have become an important ďŹ xture on the snowsport calendar. The program’s value to athlete development and talent ID has been demonstrated by the achievements of past participants including Winter Olympic athletes Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin,

Jarryd Hughes, Belle Brockhoff, Nate Johnstone and Paralympian Sean Pollard. The ďŹ rst programs, entitled ‘SSA Talent ID Camps’, were introduced in 2003 as an initiative to identify and educate emerging talent in Snowboard Cross and Halfpipe disciplines. Since then the SSA Futures program has grown to incorporate Alpine (Ski Cross), Cross Country, Freestyle Moguls, Park & Pipe (Freeski and Snowboard) and Para Snowsports. Programs off the snow focus on improving the physical literacy standards and acrobatic skills of all young snowsport athletes. SSA Futures has also recently expanded to include coach education opportunities for club and program coaches. The key aims of SSA Futures is to: Ě‹Ě˝OĹ‚ŜŊĹ‹øŽòÄ€̽øĀƑĀġŋżĥłĖ̽ÕŜÄ?ġĀŜĀŭ̽ŜĹ‹Ě˝ elite sporting opportunities and elite sports people Ě‹Ě˝OĹ‚òŊĀÕŭĀ̽ĴĹ‚Ĺ‹Ć’ġÄ€øĖĀ̽ŋĔ̽ŜÄ?Ā̽ÕŜÄ?ġĀŜĀ̽ pathway, selection criteria and the various opportunities, resources and programs available to Australian snow sport athletes Ě‹Ě˝.ŭŜÕïġĥŭÄ?̽Õ̽òŋłŭĥŭŜĀłŜ̽Ă•Ĺ‚ø̽ŽĹ‚ÄĄĆŽÄ€ø̽ approach to athlete development Ě‹Ě˝.łĖÕĖĀ̽nĂ•ŜĥĹ‹Ĺ‚Ă•ġ̽¤Ä€Ă•Ŀ̽Ă•ĹśÄ?ġĀŜĀŭ̽ and programs in pathway development initiatives
