Matt Graham, Olympic Silver Medalist. Red Energy Ambassador.

Behind you every bump of the way. It takes much more than just technique, ability and talent to be considered one of the world’s best. Just ask Aussie mogul skier and Red Energy Ambassador, Matt Graham. After missing out on the 2014 Winter Olympic finals by just 0.01 of a point, Matt showed grit, courage and determination to climb up the world rankings to number 3. And then, at last year’s Winter Olympics, Matt’s hard work paid off when he put in the run of his life to pick up the silver medal. Red is proud to get behind Matt as he continues to chase his dream and do Australia proud.

WIN TICKETS TO WARREN MILLER

The First Word WHILE I have not succumbed to the pressure “yet” to strap on the ski boots while I work on this Snow Holiday edition, let’s just say that I am as excited as anyone about the looming winter snow season. Looking through snow photos to place on pages and writing about what is ahead, it is easy for the mind to wander to past great days skiing and the buzz of a snow season. Friends return from their northern hemisphere work stints with snow tales from across the globe while we all await the first snowfalls. It did snow in Tasmania in late March, so surely that is one of the many strong indicators of a bumper winter. If it is anything to judge by, wow didn’t North America get hammered with massive snow. Some could say a little too much on certain days if I can say that. We all hope some of that precipitation arrives early in the form of good Aussie snow, just like our cover shot of Lee Rolls in the Perisher powder in 2018. I will admit that for the first time in a long time I did venture for a ski holiday to Utah. More about that in later editions and even though I have had a snow fix during our summer, nothing beats a home winter. Talking with friends in Sydney who venture down each winter to the Snowy Mountains and hearing the excitement in their

voice reinforces my theory. You can’t beat an Australian winter. It is where most of us learnt to ski or snowboard, and along with that some of the best days skiing that to this day you can reminisce with precise detail. Yes, memories galore from the past and more to be created this season. But what is install this winter? Well there is huge development happening at both of NSW’s big two resorts. Perisher have a new lift with the $4.2 million Leichhardt Quad Chair project ready to run for the start of the season. They also have big plans for a six-seat chair on Mt Perisher in the future. At Thredbo they have over $50 million worth of projects in the pipeline starting with a new 8 seat Gondola to replace the old Merritts double chair. This project is set to commence next summer and be ready for the 2020 season. Read all about this plus more in this Snow Holiday edition. See you on the slopes...

Season Snow By Steve Cuff TRYING to predict the snow season months ahead is like winning the lottery, you might not win every time. So we are hardly going to gaze into our crystal ball at the end of March when we go to print. But if you look at the snow depth chart on page 36 you will see that recent years have indeed been very good. The past two years in particular have seen great snowfall topping well over the twometre mark. You know it is going to snow as it always does so planning ahead is the key. Yet some still hesitate and prefer the wait and see method which can lead you to be caught out. Sure, it is good to try and time a visit with fresh snow, but you don’t always have that luxury. Most people book their snow holiday ahead for July school holidays or their preferred time in July and August otherwise you will most likely miss out on accommodation. This is the best strategy, lock those beds in. Regular snow enthusiasts already have their season pass so you have one part of the equation solved.

Just as incentive to think ahead we bring you a few classic snow images from the 2018 season. We sure hope it snows like this again so bring on winter 2019.

PRIOR to winter 2019 Snowy Mountains Magazine will introduce a brand-new newsletter called Mountain Mail. The Mountain Mail newsletter will keep subscribers not only informed with the latest snow falls but notifications on when our online edition is posted, new website stories, all the happenings across the mountains plus our giveaways in case you do not see the print edition. One of the beauties of our newsletter is we live right here in the heart of the mountains and can relay information you might be interested in but don’t otherwise hear. The Snowy Mountains is really developing into a true year-round destination, so we think the timing is perfect to keep you well informed outside of our popular eight print editions. Naturally we will still print all the relevant stories and information we would normally publish, but the newsletter will be all the in between stories plus latest news. You can subscribe now to the newsletter by visiting our website at www.snowymagazine.com.au.

Buying a Snowboard By Adam Begg ARE you new to snowboarding and want to buy your first board or does your exiting board need an upgrade? A new snowboard is money well spent and always a worthy purchase, after all you can’t put a price on fun but there are a few factors to consider when buying. The length of your board should be somewhere between your shoulder and your chin depending on what sort of riding you do and your ability. Next, consider what terrain and type of riding you are going to be doing. Is it freeriding, freestyling or just cruising the groomers? No matter what your style or ability there’s a board to suit you and your style of riding. The main board types are All Mountain or Freeride which are best for any terrain, Freestyle, best for park riding, Powder boards which are best for Japan and Split Boards which are best for the backcountry enthusiast and growing in popularity. Once you’ve selected what board, you now need to decide if you want camber, reverse camber dual camber, flat, banana, triple base technology or magna-traction?

Yes, there’s a bunch of crazy confusing terms but with a little help you can find the right board to make your snow holiday enjoyable. For those holidaying once a year you should buy a board to suit your current ability. Riders doing seasons who have ambitions to be the “next big thing in the park” make sure you buy a board that can handle all the big tricks as you develop. For mainly groomed riding a cambered board is a good choice and a directional board is better suited to all-mountain freeriding. If you prefer the park you will need a twin tip that rides equally good in both directions. A reverse camber board could help your jibbing or if you just can’t decide or you want the best of both worlds a dual camber board could be your weapon of choice. Nearly every major brand offers an option to suit every style and type of riding you can think of. Buying a snowboard is a VERY important decision that could be the difference between a good or bad holiday so don’t be lured purely by fancy graphics you may see on the internet. Snowboard shops play an important part in our industry and the knowledge of the

“shop staff” is not to be underestimated. I buy all my boards from POW Boardstore in Jindabyne where the staff really know their stuff, with up to 100 or more years of combined knowledge. These guys live, breathe and work snowboarding, plus also ride for fun too. Staff that work in snowboard shops want to sell you the best board that suits you. They know every detail, technology and crazy term that snowboard companies use and can talk you through what it means and how that will

help your riding. Most stores offer a demo program to let you try before you buy. I highly recommend this once you have an idea of what you are looking for and test a few options to see what you like. So, what are you waiting for? Head into your local snowboard store for the best advice, customer service and community that the internet can’t give you. Grab yourself a new sled and get out there and start having some of the best days of your life.

Buying the Best Ski for You By Steve Cuff WHAT determines a good ski and how should you approach buying the best ski that suits you. That is a question that many buyers ask themselves. There are no bad skis on the market these days but finding the ski that makes you ski better will ensure you have more enjoyable days carving up the mountain. You can visit a store and say wow, look at those flashy graphics, they must be the ski for me as impressive marketing campaigns do influence choices. There is a lot of terminology that ski companies throw at you, different widths to consider, shapes and lengths, but these can be fine-tuned depending on what is your preferred terrain, height, weight and build. This is where experienced ski shop staff can assist with their knowledge to get you started. Reading ski test reviews will greatly assist you in gaining more knowledge, especially if you can relate to a tester that skis like you. You may be loyal to a favourite brand and you upgrade every three years. But will that ski “Suit You” as this is

what it is all about? You must remember that each ski reacts totally different to each individual. Yet some people don’t test drive before they buy. That is why the best way to know a ski will suit your skiing is to take it for a few runs, ski

your normal turns on your preferred terrain and see how it performs. I can guarantee you out of three, five or eight skis, you will have one or two that

you like better. More importantly, that ski will make you ski better and with less effort. It will feel like turns are smooth as opposed to skis that fight against you and don’t suit you. There is nothing wrong with the other skis, and your mate probably likes one that you did not. It is all about your style, turn shape, weight, height, speed, everything that is characteristic to how you ski. The length of ski

is usually best between your chin and nose. If you are like most Australians and ski 80% on groomed runs you should consider a ski that is 80mm or less under foot. These skis perform best on the corduroy. All mountain skis range from 80mm to 95mm and are well suited for a mix of groomed and venturing into the off piste. The extra width will assist in powder or chopped up snow. More advanced skiers who prefer to chase more off piste snow may well

Snowy Mountains Magazine - 2019 - 9

consider a ski in the 90-100mm range. Australia generally has heavier snow so extra width does help you here. For powder skiing in Japan for instance, people often prefer big fat skis so a width of 100mm-110mm may be your choice, but Japan snow is lighter so width choice could depend on your ability. The fatter the ski the more you stay on top of the powder rather than getting full depth. Ski companies spend huge money on research and technology with today’s skis far superior than previous decades. Yet you still see people on old equipment. That is their choice, but they are missing out. Ask your local ski shop for advice and if they have demo models. Look for ski demonstration weekends on the calendar at your favourite resort test drive before you buy. You will not be disappointed and will be skiing better than before. Then find the shop that sells that ski.

How to Book a Snow Holiday VISITING the snow is a great holiday for the whole family or groups of friends and here is your how to guide to book your holiday. First you need to decide where you want to visit. The Snowy Mountains of NSW have four resorts, Perisher, Thredbo, Charlotte Pass or Selwyn Snowfields. Depending on your budget, you can either stay on snow in the resort or stay off snow in one of the nearby towns. Off snow will allow savings on accommodation but you need to drive to the snow each day. Once you have your accommodation finalised you can then pre book your lift tickets if you plan to ski or snowboard. The bigger and most popular resorts are Thredbo and Perisher which also offer great skiing and snowboard terrain for all abilities. They each have extensive on snow options and respectively different mountain characteristics. Thredbo have a quaint European style village and the longest vertical terrain in Australia and Perisher is Australia’s largest resort where you stay on the snow at higher elevations. The town of Jindabyne is popular and perfectly situated similar distances (approx. 33km) from each resort. This is classed as

STYLE: Picture yourself here on snow in the Marritz Hotel at Perisher.

off snow. This Snow Holiday edition has a plethora of snow information on resorts and accommodation advertisements that will assist you, but you will need to make some enquiries initially for costs to suit your budget and your choice of resort if staying on snow. Once you have chosen either on snow or off snow you will need to source accommodation. The best tip here is don’t leave it too late. School holidays, weekends and peak season months of July and August fill up quickly, so

best to get in early to secure your beds. If you are visiting for the first time the months of June and September offer great non peak season deals. Accommodation choices are categorised as either a hotel, ski lodge, apartment or larger house (ski chalet). For the best deals book direct with the hotel or one of the reputable snow accommodation booking agents listed in this edition. They all have extensive knowledge of their respective properties, resorts and towns and offer all the information you need to make the best of your snow trip.

Hotels are great if you want the convenience of having your breakfast cooked and plan to eat out at either the hotel restaurant or other establishments for dinner. Each hotel may offer their own individual packages which may include dinners and have options for singles, couples, families or groups. Hotels have their own restaurants and separate bars meaning you do not necessarily have to leave the venue unless you prefer to dine at different restaurants each night. Ski lodges have members and are often looking for new members, plus they advertise beds commercially. They offer mostly private rooms and some dormitory style rooms, have either self-catering, meaning you bring your own food or offer packages including breakfast and dinner. Lodges tend to have a communal living area for all guests. Apartments and houses are ideal if you want more space and the intimacy to be with your own group or family. They are selfcontained and you will need to pack your own food unless you intend to dine out. They offer all the comforts of your own home. Remember, book early to secure your preferred property and enjoy the snow.

to the snow this winter

Kids - Family Fun in the Snow By Gina Woodward

How many sleeps to go? Are we there yet? Yes, the build-up to a snow holiday is pretty much like that of Christmas. To ensure your family has a great snow holiday and you get met with cheers and excitement the next time you say, “We’re thinking about going to the snow” rather than “Noooo… we want to go on a HOT holiday”, here are some tips to help. Make it positive, do the hard yards and it will pay off with a lifelong career of family snow experiences. HAVE FUN: The joy you find on a snow holiday is not only just in skiing or learning to snowboard. Some of the best memories are made just playing in the snow. If you’re fortunate to stay on the hill, then your kids are most likely going to be outside playing in the snow - think snowballs, snow angels and snowmen - right up to when you call them in for dinner, just like the good old days. EAT: It sounds simple but often the biggest issue is fuel. Make sure your kids eat breakfast and you have a good range of pocket snacks to avert any crisis or use as bribes later in the day. STAY WARM: Think layers. If they don’t own thermals, wear flannelette pjs or tracksuit pants underneath that is not cotton – and that’s a big NO to cotton socks too.

STAY DRY: Make sure kids’ clothes are waterproof. Not just pants and jacket, but gloves or mittens too. There’s no faster way to a miserable time than cold, wet hands in the snow. PROTECT: Ensure your kids have eyewear - goggles are preferable so their eyes don’t dry out, but sunglasses are ok on a sunny day. They only get one set of eyes, in the same way they only get one head. When they are at home, kids are used to wearing helmets for skateboarding and bike riding so it’s a no-brainer to wear one for snowsports too – they’ll also never have cold ears again.

bike trails or challenge your family to a game of disc/frisbee golf. If it’s different from home then it feels like a real holiday, not just for the kids but for everyone in the family. STAY POSITIVE: This is key to your successful family snow holiday. It’s one of the few sports you can actually do for a whole day, together. You’ll be planning your next snow holiday before you know it, so most of all just have fun.

TREATS: Yes, let them have the holiday treats – embrace the hot chips, the smores or the hot chocolate with the marshmallow snowman on a stick. Sometimes you’ll hear kids say the best part of their holiday was just that. A good start anyway… LEARN: Take snowsports lessons. Let the kids learn correctly in a safe and supportive environment. Kids encourage other kids, so it can be a bit of competitive fun to learn in a group. With good technique, kids are set up for life. REST: Get plenty of sleep plus relaxation away from screens. Play board games. Take an afternoon off and try a different activity such as snowtubing, XC skiing or snowshoeing. If you’re staying offmountain, check out the town, skate park,

Vail Resorts

Buys Hotham and Falls Creek

BIG: Vail Resorts have purchased Falls Creek (ski) and Hotham (aerial) for $174 million. PHOTOS: Courtesy Falls Creek and Hotham/Craig Parry.

HUGE news for the Australian snow industry with Vail Resorts to purchase Victorian snow resorts Hotham and Falls Creek for AU$174 million. In a statement released in February, Vail Resorts announced that it has entered into an agreement to purchase the ski fields at Falls Creek Alpine Resort (“Falls Creek”) and Hotham Alpine Resort (“Hotham”) in Victoria, Australia. The acquisition, which is subject to certain regulatory approvals, is expected to close prior to the commencement of the Australian snow season in June 2019. Vail Resorts will then own three Australian snow resorts after its purchase of Perisher in 2015 for AU$176.6 million. Vail Resorts will purchase Australian Alpine Enterprises Holdings Pty. Ltd and all related corporate entities that operate Falls Creek and Hotham resorts from Living and Leisure Australia Group (LLA), a subsidiary of Merlin

Entertainments, for a purchase price of approximately AU$174 million, subject to certain adjustments at closing, including an increase (or reduction) in the price for operating losses (or gains) incurred for the period from December 29, 2018 through closing. The acquisition includes ski school, retail/rental, reservation and property management operations at both resort areas. When the transaction closes the 2019 Epic Australia Pass and 2018-19 Epic Pass will include unlimited, unrestricted access to Falls Creek and is expected to include unlimited, unrestricted access to Hotham, subject to certain approvals. Vail Resorts will continue to honour previously sold 2019 Hero Pass products for both Falls Creek and Hotham. “We are thrilled to welcome the guests and employees of both Falls Creek and Hotham into the Vail Resorts family and further strengthen our position

in Australia, which is one of our most important international markets. The acquisition of the leading mountain resorts in Victoria is part of our continued strategy to drive season pass sales and build loyalty with guests from around the world,” said Rob Katz, chairman and chief executive officer of Vail Resorts. “After our success connecting with skiers in Sydney and across New South Wales since acquiring Perisher in 2015, we have a huge opportunity to create a deeper connection with Melbourne and broader Victorian skiers and riders.” Nick Mackenzie, Managing Director of Merlin Entertainments’ Midway division said “Vail Resorts has a great track record in developing world-class resorts. We’re confident that guests, employees and the surrounding communities of Hotham and Falls Creek will benefit from Vail Resorts’ expertise, investment and know-how, and we wish the teams every success for the future.” Vail Resorts is a publicly held company traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: MTN). Vail Resorts, Inc., through its subsidiaries operates 15 world-class mountain resorts and three urban ski areas, including Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and Crested Butte in Colorado; Park City in Utah; Heavenly,

Northstar and Kirkwood in the Lake Tahoe area of California and Nevada; Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia, Canada and Perisher, Falls Creek as well as Hotham (subject to certain approvals) in Australia. Vail Resorts also have affiliate arrangements with Japanese resorts Rusutsu and Hakuba Valley, offering five consecutive days with no blackouts. Falls Creek is Victoria’s largest alpine resort with 450 hectares of terrain, roughly 90 runs accessed by 14 lifts and offering a huge variety of terrain including fantastic beginner and intermediate trails that are well suited to families and first-timers. For advanced skiers and riders, the Summit is packed with steep black runs. Hotham is famous for its off piste skiing and one of the few resorts in Australia that has access to true side-country terrain. The resort has 13 lifts, 320 hectares of ski terrain, a nearby airport and is the only resort in the Southern Hemisphere where the village is located on top of the mountain. When the acquisition is complete, current Epic Australia Pass holders will be able to access Perisher, Hotham and Falls Creek on the same pass, plus Vail Resorts’ stable of overseas resorts.

Athletes Podium Success AUSTRALIAN athletes have continued to produce stellar results in the northern hemisphere season, with the standout being Scotty James who simply dominated in snowboard halfpipe. James who won the Winter Olympic bronze medal in 2018 was unstoppable this season winning all his six halfpipe events for the perfect season. He finished with wins at The Dew Tour, X Games, US Grand Prix, Laax Open and the US Burton Open, as well as a third consecutive FIS World Championship title, an unprecedented feat as the firstever snowboarder to do so. Of winning his third-consecutive world title, the Melbournian said he couldn’t believe it. “I was pinching myself when I won my second world title, and now I’m triple pinching myself that I’ve won my third. It’s amazing.” Snowboard Cross rider Cameron Bolton had a breakthrough season claiming his maiden World Cup event in Feldberg, Germany in February. He then backed up that result with a bronze at the World Cup Final in Veysonnaz, Switzerland. NSWIS Snowboard Cross athlete Adam Lambert captured a silver World Cup medal in Baqueira Beret, Spain. His second place finish was the 21-year-old’s first podium appearance since last season. Valentino Guseli won the 2019 Burton US Open junior snowboard halfpipe jam for under 14 year olds after being runner up in 2018. “I’ve just been snowboarding, having fun and trying to send it and it’s finally paid off and I’m so happy,” said Guseli. Aerial skier Laura Peel from Canberra won her second ever World Cup event, and the first in seven years when she graced the top step of the podium in Shimao Lotus Mountain, China. It was her second podium of the season after a second place in Moscow. “I couldn’t be happier with how today went! We had some really tricky conditions with the temperature in double digits, and

some swirling winds,” said Peel. In moguls Australian Olympians Matt Graham and Jakara Anthony won men’s and women’s moguls World Championships silver medals in Deer Valley, Utah in February. Anthony had a breakthrough year winning her maiden world cup in Lake Placid, a silver medal in Mt Tremblant and a silver and bronze in Japan, “It’s been an incredible night, Deer Valley is such a special event, skiing under the lights, and I had my whole family and a massive Australian crew here watching,” said Anthony. Para Alpine vision impaired skier Mel Perrine and sighted guide Bobbi Kelly were crowned World Champions and had a medal haul winning one gold in women’s super combined, two silver and a bronze in Sella Nevea. They added to their World Cup success at La Molina (ESP) where the pair won the first of two giant slalom events but slipped to third position in the third race. They finished second on both slalom occasions. Triple Paralympian Mitchell Gourley picked up a medal for Australia, claiming bronze in the World Championship men’s slalom. Australian Para snowboarders Ben Tudhope, Simon Patmore and Sean Pollard have completed an excellent World Cup campaign in La Molina, Spain which included multiple Snowboard Cross and Banked Slalom races. Tudhope was a regular on the Lower Limb 2 podium across his four races, scoring two gold, one silver and one bronze after winning two golds in the world cup of the season. While Patmore also found himself on the podium three times in the men’s Upper Limb category, claiming gold in his first race, followed up with a bronze and silver in the banked slalom races. Teammate, Sean Pollard earlier in the season won a silver medal in a snowboard cross event in Big White, Canada.

Water Ramp a Launching Pad for Winter Athlete Pathways AFTER false starts, years of hope and rejections by communities who did not want a water ramp, Brisbane will finally be home to a new $6.5 million International Freestyle Skiing Training Facility at the Sleeman Sports Complex at Chandler. The project is a collaboration between the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia (OWIA) the Federal Government through Sport Australia, the Queensland Government and the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) and is expected to be completed in early 2020. AOC Chief Executive Officer Matt Carroll says significant investment from the Federal Government, the Queensland Government’s contribution of the site and the AOC’s own financial contribution is a shot in the arm for aspiring athletes and future Winter Olympians. “This project is a great example of a partnership between sport and government delivering positive outcomes,” Carroll said. “This is time and funding that will be invested here in Australia rather than at overseas facilities.” With aerial and mogul skiers providing eight of Australia’s 15 medals in

Winter Olympics, including three gold, this facility will see Queensland as the development hub for future Olympic champions. The project will be managed by the OWIA, who have been instrumental in securing this Australian-first facility. OWIA Chair Geoff Henke AO says the goahead is a tremendous boost for Winter Olympic sport in Australia. “I am excited this facility will come to fruition and continue to develop Australian freestyle skiers of all ages and abilities,” said Henke. “At the elite level this will eliminate a competitive disadvantage, allowing Australian athletes to train at home that provides a critical edge. It also provides a talent pathway to identify and develop talent from the grassroots up to ensure winter sports continue to grow. Australian Institute of Sport CEO Peter Conde says a world-leading water ramp facility will literally be a launching pad for the next generation of Australia’s Winter Olympians. “A key feature of the facility is that there will be different-sized ramps to cater for a variety of standards so athletes can

progress,” said Conde. “Our current Australian athletes will be able to train on the completed facility before the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, but the impact of this facility will be a gamechanger for years to come. The AIS has also boosted its investment to the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia by almost $2.3 million over two years for the development of our future Winter Olympians.” Five-time Olympian and aerials gold medallist Lydia Lassila was excited at

the benefits of the ramp saying it will be incredible for winter sport in Australia. “It means having more people participating in the sport, funding going to athlete development rather than travel costs and allowing athletes to spend more time in the country rather than 10 months a year overseas,” said Lassila. “Having that home base is so important – both for performance and to provide for a more balanced life close to your family and support group.”

Thredbo to Spend on Redevelopment By Steve Cuff THREDBO have plans to invest up to $50 million over the coming years if all their proposed plans come to fruition. Starting with a new $10 million Doppelmayer gondola replacing the old Merritts double chair, plus a major revamp of the Merritts Mountain House restaurant will see this side of the mountain transformed. The 8-passenger gondola has been approved through NSW Planning and while Thredbo will not make any official comment at this stage, it is understood their board have approved the project and work will commence at seasons end. The gondola is expected to open for the 2020 season. Other plans that have Development Applications submitted include three separate car park upgrades within the Friday Flat area, a knock down and rebuild of the entire Thredboland precinct at Friday Flat plus changes to the poolside area of the Thredbo Alpine Hotel. The gondola will run on the same line as the existing chair over the Schuss Run, will have a new mid station location allowing options to upload from the lower part of High Noon, or download back to the Valley Terminal.

NEW: Thredbo will build a new gondola and redevelop Merritts Mountain House and Friday Flat precinct. PHOTO: Ron Molnar

The new gondola will see increased lifting capacity to 2000 per hour, up from the slow 520 skiers per hour on Merritts, the oldest chair in Thredbo constructed in 1967. The Dream Run also has a DA submitted for snowmaking to boost the cover in this area and compliment the access from the Gondola. Plans for the rebuild of the Merritts Mountain House will see the existing main floor areas raised 500mm to provide direct grade access with the gondola level. There will be added outside decking. This area will then be ideal as an additional summer facility to compliment the Kosciuszko Chair and could be used for functions as well as added sightseeing for

foot passengers on the gondola. The proposed redevelopment of Thredboland would see the existing building demolished down to the ground level concrete slab and replacing it with a new building with a larger floor area and footprint. The new building would double the existing floorspace with a two story structure plus mezzanine. Housed within the new building could be retail, tickets, kiosk, guest services, lockers, rental, ski patrol plus the Thredboland facilities for kids. The carpark DA submissions comprise three different applications. CP1 is over two stages which would see an elevated car

park over the upper section of the Friday Flat day car park and increase parking by 219 positions. CP2 application would see a new carpark by constructing an on grade car park above Friday Drive along the northern edge and would achieve 79 new spots. CP3 proposal is to expand the existing Friday Flat car park by constructing an on grade car park below Friday Drive and above the Thredbo River which would result in 171 new car spots. Thredbo have also submitted a DA for a new 3.1km mountain bike trail (N6) from the top of the Gunbarrel chair that will be in a similar design to the Flow trail underneath the Kosciuszko Chair.

Thredbo to skin to mountain peaks for great views and untracked snow makes it so special. The unique rock formations and riding through gum trees makes this a true Aussie ski and snowboard experience,” said Thredbo Guide Jennie Milton. Peter Fuchs has also been guiding in the backcountry for years and loves that every tour has its own highlights. “My favourite day last year - it was a perfect spring day with no wind and we timed the steep descents at Twin Humps to perfection to ski all-time spring corn conditions. Then on our descent to Dead Horse Gap, we were surprised by two Wild Brumbies grazing peacefully as we skied by. A memory I will never forget,” he said. Trips are graded green, blue and black and include a guide who will show you the way and share backcountry safety tips. Tours are suited to both the curious backcountry new comer or a regular rider who is seeking more than the resort slopes.

Worldwide Snow INTERNATIONAL snow travel has always been on the Australian radar, and rightly so as there is a world of mountains to explore and so many resorts to visit in one lifetime. Travellers are always looking for great deals and Mogul Ski World are keen to reward the early bird buyer. They currently have exceptional packages including a variety of kids ski free deals, so enquire for more details. WHISTLER When you need to explain the word big in the snow world just mention Whistler. Two massive mountains, Whistler and Blackcomb side by side and both lead to the most beautiful of villages forming the biggest resort in North America. It is a true winter wonderland with long wide cruising slopes and with 1565m vertical it will test your stamina, as will the multiple steeps and chutes should you desire. Off the mountain you have bobsled, zip line, extensive bar and restaurant options. Access is very easy from Vancouver, the exchange rate also favourable and the Epic Australia Pass is valid, just check for any restrictions.

ASPEN SNOWMASS Four mountains of Aspen, Snowmass, Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk offer the skier every snow dream you have imagined. Waking to your view to Aspen Mountain you will be in awe of scenery and fall line all the way from the summit to the après bars in town. After all, they are very famous for their après. But don’t let that take away from the snow and the skiing, it has everything. From ego corduroy, gentle cruisers from Snowmass Village or hiking Highlands Bowl, you will encounter a lifetime of memories from even the shortest stay. VAIL The impressive flagship of Vail Resorts has a lot to like here. Walk from your front door in either of two village base stations and ski straight onto the lifts for a day of pleasure. Extensive terrain options from blue cruising corduroy, steep black runs to their legendary back bowls where you can float through the finest of deep dry Colorado powder. With over 5,289 acres of which 29% is intermediate and 53% advanced, the choices are plentiful. At days end relax

in a plethora of après bars and dine in the finest of restaurants with a vibrant village scene. Epic Australia Pass is valid, just check for any restrictions. NISEKO Japan’s most famous Hokkaido powder awaits with abundance for a Niseko holiday which has been a mecca for Australian snow enthusiasts. If the thought of snow flakes the size of 50 cent pieces falling continuously from the sky appeals to you, then you have come to the right place. The skiing is great, but this often means no sunshine for days or weeks on end if you need your vitamin D. A highlight is the culture and food which is just as spectacular as the snow in this scenic town that will see you sampling the finest food and perfecting your new language skills. UTAH - PARK CITY The biggest resort in the USA you will find everything about Park City just about perfect including the historic bustling town and Main Street. Whether you spend a week or a month you will find it hard to ski all terrain but be sure to give it a good go. Cruise among the pine tree lined runs stretching from the Canyons base to the Park City Mountain base, multiple restaurants, nightlife, fast lifts and only 30 minutes from Salt Lake City airport

makes accessibility easy. Epic Australia Pass is valid. UTAH – SKI SALT LAKE CITY The first thought you have as you drive up Little Cottonwood Canyon is someone should have renamed it big. But that is the canyon name next door and between them you have four world class resorts of Alta, Snowbird, Solitude and Brighton and all on the Salt Lake Ski City Superpass. Alta is a skiers only mountain but don’t despair as Snowbird has more than their fair share of sensational terrain and boy do they each pack a punch when it comes legendary deep snowfall. With awesome views stretching at every direction it is hard to focus on the skiing which seems endless. Even a month holiday will barely touch the trail map. Super easy access from Salt Lake airport.

Leichhardt Chair has Lift-off ECHOING through Perisher Valley the whirling blades of the Blackhawk helicopter were welcomed sounds as the towers were lifted into position in late March for Perisher’s new $4.2 million Leichhardt Chairlift project.

The new quad chairlift replaces the old T-bar and will increase lifting capacity in the Leichhardt area by 75% giving access to terrain including Powder Ridge, The Cleft, Snowy Trails and the Leichhardt Terrain Park. The project also includes new snowmaking from the bottom of Happy Valley T-bar around to the base of the quad chair. The chair will be ready for the start of the 2019 snow season. The impressive skills of the Timberline Helicopter pilot to position each piece perfectly and great workmanship from the Doppelmayr Australia and Perisher lift crews saw four towers and cross heads lifted and in place in under two hours. The top two towers were installed via crane in days prior to the $9000 per hour Blackhawk helicopter arriving. The crew will now be full steam ahead with finishing the bottom station, running cables and installing the chairs. The chair will be ideal for all levels of skiers and snowboarders and will allow beginners to loop the Snowy Trails run

WHIRL: The Blackhawk helicopter lifts towers and cross heads into position on the Leichhardt Quad Chair. PHOTOS: Steve Cuff. and ride a chair as opposed to the T-bar. For advanced riders Powder Ridge has always been a popular spot on stormy days, and the Leichhardt terrain park will now have faster laps for riders. With the

T-bar track now opened up the area is certain to have a different feel. The new quad chair is also a key piece of the puzzle in future planning for a sixseat chairlift on Mt Perisher.

A Fleet of Groomers ONE of the huge advantages of skiing and snowboarding at Perisher is the extensive network of runs. Let’s just say you never get bored when you can cruise the 3076 acres across the four mountains of Perisher Valley, Blue Cow, Smiggin Holes and Guthega. It seems to be endless choices from one side of the resort to the other and by day’s end your legs know you have accumulated plenty of kilometres. Everyone has their favourite run of course, and to list them all here we might run out of ink, but some that come to mind are Excelerator at Blue Cow, Towers and the Hypertail on Mt Perisher and Parachute at Guthega. In total there are over 100 named runs across the entire resort and that spells busy nights for the Perisher grooming team. Perisher’s ongoing investment in grooming machinery continues in 2019 with the purchase and addition of another AU$410,000 Prinoth Bison X winch snow groomer to the eet. This is the third Bison X snow groomer added to the Perisher grooming eet in as many years, making the total investment in excess of AU$1.2 million.Â

Home to the largest eet of snow groomers in Australia, Perisher have 18 groomers who work their magic across the mountain every night during the winter. The experienced snow grooming team working in shifts from lift close to sunrise apply the ďŹ nishing touches ensuring when you arrive each morning there are perfectly groomed runs for every level. Perisher’s snow is always the best and let’s be honest, who doesn’t like that exhilarating feeling of carving up fresh corduroy and leaving your own signature turns. Better still is to ride the chair and look below to see your handiwork. Even better on Sunday mornings you can register to join First Tracks, which will ensure you have the best conditions as the Ridge Quad Chair at Blue Cow starts early allowing you to make turns just after the sun has inspected the run with its warm glow. Yes, groomed runs are fantastic and are preferred by most, but the fun doesn’t stop there. The friendly grooming team always leave untouched snow for you on the powder days so that you can ride to your heart’s content and when you are done, they will return to smooth it all out for you again.

STRENGTH: One of Perisher’s Prinoth groomers and a classic sunrise over a freshly groomed Front Valley. PHOTOS: Courtesy of Perisher.

While you do want them all to be busy each night, it is also cool that they leave the occasional mogul run should the desire to tackle those big bumps overcome you. Yet we just know they want to take that big Prinoth Bison and level those moguls out.

Name that Run By Steve Cuff OPEN the Perisher trail map and you are presented with hundreds of words naming trails and lifts. But where did they all come from….? This winter Snowy Mountains Magazine will delve into the history books and see what we can find. Although with so many named runs we are already anticipating a few long nights of investigating. Last year Perisher named a run on the Brumby T-bar at Blue Cow after Winter Olympic silver medallist mogul skier Matt Graham. Mogul Matt’s is so appropriate as Matt has spent hundreds if not thousands of hours on that slope fine tuning his mogul technique. Having known Matt from a young age, he was always destined to be a great skier, but dedication and absorbing countless bumps while constantly lapping the Brumby T-bar certainly helped his cause. At the official naming last season Matt said, “I spent a lot of my childhood here learning and competing at interschools and all the way up through the junior comps. It’s very special and this run is very close to me in a lot of ways and we still spend a lot of time here training

throughout the season.” Another Winter Olympian Zali Steggall has a run named after her at Blue Cow. Off the Summit Chair and formerly called Stampede, Zali’s run was renamed after she represented Australia with distinction as a slalom skier. Steggall won a bronze medal at the Nagano 1998 Winter Olympics plus a gold medal at the 1999 Alpine World Championships in Vail, Colorado. She is Australia’s most successful alpine skier and an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) recipient. Her family lived in France for most of her junior years and she was in fact a member of the French junior ski team. Returning to Australia she debuted at the Winter Olympics in Albertville as a seventeen-year-old and competed in four Winter Olympic games from 1992 2002 Zali’s run is a FIS homologated slalom course and many FIS championships have been held on the run. Zali also trained at Blue Cow on Zalis for many years so it was a fitting tribute to one of Australia’s best skiers. The Olympic T-bar gives you access to the same named Olympic black diamond

run, which by all accounts has intimated many a Perisher skier and snowboarder. The Dogleg black run is also off the same face, and naturally starts where the T-bar dog legs around the corner to its higher unload point. It is not uncommon to see a trail of traverse lines across the slope as once people arrive at the top and look over the

edge, a sense of steep fear strikes them and they gracefully travers across the slope and exit. This is understandable, but it often plays havoc with people who want to ski the fall line and have to negotiate the traverse. There has been many a brave tale told of Olympic run exploits in the après bars of Perisher.

Snowy Mountains Backcountry SKIERS looking for a backcountry experience from Perisher Valley can now book with Snowy Mountains Backcountry, a new business debuting this year with Doug Chatten. While the business name might be new, business proprietor Doug Chatten has enormous experience having skied on the Main Range for over 25 years, guided for over 20 years plus worked as a full-time ski patroller at Perisher for 15 years. With an intimate knowledge of the local backcountry and a want to share their deep passion for adventure with you, you will be in safe hands with Doug and his selected experienced guides. The base area for Snowy Mountains Backcountry (SMBC) will be in

Guthega. They are also in the process of establishing a shop which will stock backcountry rentals including alpine touring skis, climbing skins, adjustable poles and snowshoes. They will also retail a range of backcountry essentials like gas, food, drink bottles, maps and lots of other needy items for people heading out or back in to the resort to stock up. “The Guthega location is perfect, nestled in between the Perisher Range and the Main Range,” said Doug. “With the superb ski touring slopes of the Main Range, Guthega River area and The Paralyser Range at the doorstep it is ideally located in the sub alpine at one of the best trail head departure points for backcountry touring in Australia. “This is where our tours commence, starting off with an equipment familiarisation, route overview and safety briefing. A variety of programs are offered from introductory backcountry courses through to demanding arduous tours. There is a pathway from a beginner backcountry skier up to a ski mountaineer.” Doug said they have a great suite of tours that cater for a wide variety of skill levels, having taken time to design their programs

TOUR: Doug Chatten skiing and hiking and (bottom left) a group in the Snowy Mountains Backcountry. PHOTOS: Tony Wehr. so that participants can position themselves into the tour that most suits. “SMBC staff genuinely take interest in your experience and work hard to ensure the group has a safe and happy time, we have a high care factor.” Trips with SMBC are as much about learning as they are about an outdoor experience. They pass on knowledge that will increase your skill level and teach you tips and tricks to help you along the way. The Snowy Mountains has a rich and diverse natural and cultural history which guides will also share with guests throughout the journey. The team will also have a strong conservation ethic and are committed to conserving and preserving the flora and fauna and minimising their impact on the parklands. Having encountered many situations

Driving in Winter Snow WEATHER plays a huge factor in the mountains during winter and never more so than on the roads. Each day you drive to the snow resorts you never know what you may encounter, and it is extremely important to be prepared. Those who take it for granted often come unstuck with either travelling too fast or not taking enough caution as snow and ice build on the road. If you are mainly driving in the city it is also important to check if your car is winter ready. CAR PREPARATION Imagine if you sat in the car park all day during a blizzard. You would be extremely cold. This is how your car feels and the main precaution is to ensure you have enough antifreeze so that your engine’s cooling system does not freeze solid. Should that happen it could be a hugely expensive exercise. Your mechanic can check that your antifreeze is at least down to -20 degrees. Fill your window washer with suitable additive to help from freezing. Using water on your windscreen on a sub-zero day will only freeze instantly reducing your vision immediately. When leaving the resorts ensure your lights are clear of snow. Carrying a compact shovel is handy in case it is needed on snowy days. Always keep your petrol tank full in case you need to run the car to stay warm during any delays.

TYRES Driving all season long or frequently for multiple weekends or snow holidays? You should consider having winter tyres. “These tyres are manufactured with a specialised rubber compound and tread design which differs to their “cousins” the mud and snow tyre. They are specifically designed to work on snow and ice,” said Ian Arnold from Snowy River Tyrepower. “The winter tyres that we import are rated as All Season tyres in the European and North American markets, as they have far more extreme cold temperatures to us and therefore have more specialised extreme winter tyres. So, the winter tyres that we import are definitely OK to be used all year round here in Australia if you wish to avoid having to buy two sets of tyres.” Winter Tyres incorporate high-silica compounds that retain flexibility as air and road temperatures plummet. Summer tyres, even the knobbier varieties found on many 4x4s harden rapidly in sub-zero temperatures, causing the tyre to lose traction and ultimately grip. The specialised tread design in winter tyres, with extra-deep channels, disperses the slush and surface water and is configured to combat aquaplaning on the treacherous film often found on top of ice on the roads surface. Regardless of brand, one feature all modern winter tyres share is the multitude of tiny slits, known as sipes, cut deep into the tread blocks. These create countless grippy edges that grab hold of bitumen and help retain snow and ice crystals within the tread design giving the benefit of snow on snow traction. This ensures extra traction, safety and

COLD: Be sure your car is ready for winter snow conditions.

mobility as compared to the lack of traction with a cold, hard rubber tyre on snow. WEATHER When you visit the mountains, the weather can be extremely variable. From sunny days to blizzards, temperatures can fluctuate from between plus 15 degrees down to below minus 15 degrees all within a quick period. Mixed in with these temperatures are snowy days where roads are covered in snow, and clear days where ice forms on the road even though no snow has fallen. Listen to radio road reports and read daily weather forecasts to know in advance what conditions to expect. CHAINS During the NSW winter season two wheel drive cars must carry chains into the Kosciuszko National Park driving to Perisher and are recommended to carry chains when driving to Thredbo. Chains must be carried beyond Thredbo past Dead Horse Gap.

Four wheel drive cars are exempt from fitting chains in NSW, but they are mandatory to carry them and fit them when directed in Victoria. NPWS always recommend carrying chains. If chains are required police can refuse entry to those who cannot fit chains. SPEED AND STUPIDITY The major cause for all road accidents in the winter is people driving too fast, especially on snow. Overtaking dangerously causing people to brake suddenly also causes numerous accidents. Speed limits are reduced in winter for good reason so be patient. SKITUBE Perisher have a great alternative instead of driving to the resort. Skitube is a train that starts below the official alpine snow line and delivers you straight to the resort at either Perisher or Blue Cow. The parking is plentiful at Skitube and makes your day easier, especially if you have left later in the morning.

FUTURE: The Go Jindabyne Masterplan will help shape the future of Jindabyne.

Go Jindabyne Masterplan FOR people who have been away for the summer, the NSW Government initiated and fast-tracked a $2.4 million Go Jindabyne Masterplan in late 2018. The masterplan is to help with town planning and looking at the rapid growth Jindabyne has experienced in recent years and will consider all aspects of Jindabyne, including tourism, jobs, services, accommodation, housing, roads, local products and all factors that contribute to the distinct local character of the town. With the popularity of increasing yearround tourism combined with strong snow visitation, Jindabyne has seen a mini boom, especially the past five years. Housing developments and land sales are ongoing for holiday homes, people relocating to the area and investment properties. The NSW Government has stepped in to assist the recently merged local Snowy Monaro Regional Council who may be under staffed and resourced to keep up with demand and growth of Jindabyne which has ballooned well above all expected projections. The Masterplan will: ̋̽ġłòķŽøĀ̽ÕłÕķƘŭġŭ̽ŋł̽ŶĝĀ̽ķŋòÕŶġŋł̽ŋĔ̽ future services including schools, health services and community facilities.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Since before Christmas 14 community consultations were scheduled where NSW Planning staff spoke directly with 461 residents and interested parties to gauge their opinions on what they think Jindabyne needs. Never short of opinions, 315 people also attended workshops that generated 1731 comments and 88 surveys were completed with 616 survey comments. Over 350 social pinpoint map comments with 1448 social map interactions were statistics NSW Planning forwarded to Snowy Mountains Magazine ahead of a Community Statement being released in early April. The Community Statement will be presented as a reader friendly newspaper

style document that captures the values and insights shared by the community engagements from December to the end of February. Part of the Community Statement will be a Spotlight on Jindabyne where NSW Planning spoke in depth with selected locals for their opinions. In conjunction with the Community Statement a series of videos will also be produced and published. All this captured content will help shape the Go Jindabyne Masterplan and the future of the town to 2036. COMMUNITY VISIONING MAY 6-8 NSW Planning have scheduled a follow up called Community Visioning which will commence from May 6-8 with staff returning to Jindabyne for more community engagement. They will schedule day and evening

workshops during this time plus conduct pop us sessions around town. This will help them to establish a clear community vision for what Jindabyne should look like in 2036 and develop a set of principles that will guide the creation of the masterplan. Snowy Mountains Magazine will publish more on our website as it comes to hand, plus keep the community informed via website and social media of details for the Community Visioning. The consultation, research and analysis will inform the development of the Draft Go Jindabyne Masterplan that is scheduled to be released for the public from comment by August 2019. The final Go Jindabyne Masterplan is scheduled for release in November 2019 and you can find updated information on the www.planning.nsw.gov.au/ gojindabyne website.

Snow Fitness THINKING about winter but you’re not quit snow fit yet. Dual Winter Olympian Manuela Berchtold has created this Snow Fitness program for you with three exercises to kickstart your winter training. JUMP SQUATS Squats are amongst the best exercises to have your legs ready for skiing and snowboarding. There are many variations and I suggest you always start with body weight squats to become proficient with this exercise. As your confidence and overall strength improves try varying your squat stance before adding the explosive jump. *Begin with a small, sturdy box or bench and then gradually increase the height to challenge yourself a little more. *Start with your feet hip width apart, swing your arms back to generate the power to jump. *Land softly on top with your weight evenly distributed in both legs and absorb the impact. Step down and repeat.

LUNGE – STATIC Lunges deliver fast results and use several muscles and joints and are one of the best overall leg and butt strengthening, shaping and toning exercises. *Take the feet long and wide for stability and ease of movement. *Lift the back heel to be on the ball of the back foot. *Be sure to keep the knees in line with the big toes and keep the front knee above the front ankle. *Lunge straight down until knees are both bent at 90 degrees and then return to start. *Complete entire set on one leg, feel the burn in the muscles and then repeat on the other side.

SIDE BRIDGE HOLD Side Bridge Holds are a great exercise for overall upper body and core strength. Falling over on snow is an almost inevitable part of skiing or snowboarding and we need the strength to be able to get up again. Side Bridge Holds help to mimic the positions in which you may find your body in during and after a fall. It is essential to have upper body and core strength to help you up and to also keep you upright whilst on snow. *Sitting on your side, start by putting your elbow down, just out from the shoulder to protect it. Stack your knees which are bent at 90 degrees on top of each other and then lift your hips. *To advance the exercise from here, rise on to your hand, keeping it just out from the shoulder to continue protecting it. *When ready straighten out the legs and hold your long, strong Side Bridge Hold.

VISITING the snow but don’t want to ski every day this winter. That’s ok as there are a multitude of options away from the snowfields and here are a few to get you thinking ahead. The Snowy Mountains is full of history and one of the most important is the might Snowy Scheme. You can visit the Discovery Centre in Cooma and view great artefacts, memorabilia and watch footage of the construction. Plus, you can see what all the power stations are currently producing to the minute. In Cooma visit the Raglan Gallery for art lovers, the historic town walk or the Heidi’s Teahouse at the Mt Gladstone lookout. For something different the Corrective Services Gaol Museum where you will see 200 years of penal history in NSW gaols dating back to 1788 convict days to present. Everyone loves to catch a fish, right? Of course you do, and Brian from Lakeside Lures and Tackle says the fish are always biting in winter. He can also outfit you with a rod and reel, bait and some inside knowledge of where to catch your trout. Visit his shop for advice. Talking of fish, Eucumbene Trout Farm is worth the visit to see a trout
