The First Word WHAT a snow season we have experienced in 2019, but it is by no means over yet with bucket loads of snow to enjoy in spring. Crowds have flocked to the Snowy Mountains, and rightly so, we have snow depth over the two metre mark, one August storm delivered over a metre of snow and all resorts have great value season passes. When the big snow arrives, everyone comes out of the woodwork to enjoy it. Thredbo and Perisher both have their season pass on sale and when you look at the value it is a great deal. Make sure you grab one before any price rises. Spring is a season that offers more than just snow. Mountain bikers will already be dusting off the winter cobwebs and looking to hit the trails. It will be exciting when the signature Thredbo Valley Track (TVT) opens all the way to Jindabyne. The TVT from Thredbo to Jindabyne will be an all-day adventure and one surely to help boost tourism in summer.

The country races are scheduled in spring, and if you have never been you are missing out. Bombala races are on in October, Adaminaby and Tumut in November, with the Tumut Turf Club hosting several summer races. The Snowy Scheme celebrate 70 years of what is a true wonder of the engineering world. This huge scheme really shaped the region to what is today, and what better
way to pay homage than to join in the festivities, plus visit the scheme. Jump in the car, grab a map and explore all sides of the Snowy Mountains. You will be amazed at the scenery and the vastness of what was accomplished. Just to see where dams and power stations have been built, in such rugged country, is amazing. Festivals start to fill the calendar for spring and summer, so venture out and

Huge Spring Skiing AFTER massive early August snowfalls, the Snowy Mountains will enter the spring season with one of the biggest snow depths in the past 20 years. As of August 22, the snow depth surpassed well over the two-metre mark to 222.4cm. Only the 2000, 2004 and 2018 seasons have had more recent snow depth at this same time, although we are arguing over mere centimetres. This is great news for snow revellers
who want to also stretch their season to the very end. Such was the extent of the massive snowfalls, the resorts had some of the best powder skiing in years, Perisher even claiming day of the decade on Sunday August 11. Blizzard conditions on Thursday 8th and Friday 9th were topped up with more snow on Saturday as the “Slammin Sam” storm certainly packed a punch.
All up the storm exceeded a total of 110cm in the alpine region, and Thredbo experiencing some of their biggest village snow in recent years. The snow down to low levels also played havoc with traffic as roads were snowy and icy for consecutive days, chains required and numerous accidents due to conditions. That did not deter the snow faithful who relished the conditions and combated polar like temperatures. During the storm

the temperatures were hovering about -5 degrees, plus with the polar air blast streaming straight up from the Antarctic it felt like minus 15 to minus 20 degrees on some days. Those looking to make plans for September and the closing October long weekend can be assured the snowpack will last well beyond the season close. This will certainly suit the backcountry enthusiasts who will be eyeing off their touring lines.

Clearing of the Snow Ride
◼
PEDAL: Riders heading to Perisher with Charlotte Pass in the distance.
By Steve Cuff INSPIRED by a ride through the Col du Tourmalet, one of the famous French Pyrenees climbs on the Tour de France, Jindabyne Cycling Club President Gary Pearson created a local ride to replicate his experience. Established eight years ago and starting with less than ten riders, the Clearing of the Snow ride now continues to grow, last year attracting 40 cyclists who made their way from Jindabyne to Charlotte Pass. At the conclusion of each snow season, the road to Charlotte Pass is cleared of metres of snow and the cyclists schedule their ride to tackle the climb, usually the week after Perisher close their season.
◼
VIEW: The 2018 group with the Main Range backdrop.
There are some similarities with elevation and timing of the two rides. The Col du Tourmalet French ride climbs to 2115m above sea level, and the Charlotte Pass lookout, the turning point and end of the ascent at approximately 1900m. Both rides are scheduled as soon as the road is cleared after the winter season. “I called it the Clearing of the Snow to give it an iconic name,” said Gary. The ride is subject to weather, with Gary saying it has been cancelled in the past due to bad weather. And he admits it can be tricky for visitors to plan as they need to wait until they know the closing date of resort, then wait until the road is cleared, plus look at the weather forecast. “The cold doesn’t affect us, but the
wind does, especially if people are going to be blown off their bikes. You do have to watch out for any icy patches, you avoid like anything, skinny wheels don’t go really good on icy patches, but we have not had any incidents. National Parks have been really good with helping us out, they have been really supportive.” The ride starts in the Jindabyne Town Centre with a staggered start so riders can all arrive at similar times at the top. Support crew assist along the route and with supplies at the top, before the mandatory group photo. “It’s great when you are heading up to see all the snowbanks on the side of the road, and riding through ten foot high snowbanks here and there it is so surreal, it is cool,” said Kent Carpenter who contested the ride for the first year in 2018. Once at the lookout loop, riders then make their way back to Jindabyne before lunch at the Parc Café, an overall distance covered of 87 kilometres and varying riding times up to six hours. Visitors wanting to join the ride can find contact details on the Jindabyne Cycling Club website, www.jindabynecycling. com.au.

Snowy Celebrate 70 Years of Engineering Marvel In October, Snowy Hydro is celebrating 70 years of the Mighty Snowy Scheme. SEVEN decades ago, in October 1949, the first blast was fired at Adaminaby to mark the commencement of a hydroelectric construction project that would become one of the world’s modern engineering marvels. This historic milestone will be recognised on Saturday 19 October 2019 from 11am - 3pm with a public celebration in Cooma. The event will be held on the Snowy Hydro company lawns in Cooma North, where people associated with the Scheme over the years will come together and celebrate the achievements of both the construction era, and the many years of successful operation and maintenance since. The event will focus on people catching-up, reconnecting and sharing personal stories of their Snowy life and experiences. The festivities on the lawn will include a formal welcome, live music from local

The Snowy Scheme Key Timeline - 9 Power Stations - 16 Major Dams - 145km Interconnected Tunnels - 80km of Aqueducts - 33 Hydro-electric Turbines Generating 4,100MW CONSIDER the enormity of the Snowy Scheme. Starting in October 1949 the scheme was completed on time in 1974 and on budget at a total cost of $820 million. During that 25 year period over 100,000 men and women from more than 30 countries worked on the project. During construction, seven regional townships and over 100 temporary camps were established throughout the Snowy Mountains. Life in the camps was extremely hard, especially during the early years, when hundreds of men spent harsh winters in canvas tents with only basic amenities
and provisions. Some of the townships and camps operated for several years, while other camps were moved from site to site depending on where work was being done. Cooma changed from a quiet farming town to a cosmopolitan centre with nightclubs, hotels and delicatessens with new and exotic foods. The towns of Jindabyne and Adaminaby were moved and old towns flooded.

Signature TVT Ride BOTH local and visiting mountain bike enthusiasts will be anxiously awaiting the opening of the lower Thredbo Valley Track (TVT) this spring. Final work is currently being completed (September) around the final bridge crossing at Gaden Trout Hatchery and the lower parts of the trail. The upper 20km TVT ride from Thredbo to Lake Crackenback Resort has been one of the most popular cross country trails in the region. The complete TVT will take this signature ride to the next level. Meandering down the valley with various track surfaces, the upper TVT journey is on a natural ground base with all the associated contours, protruding rocks and tree roots, whilst some areas are smoother with a coating of hard packed gravel. A key feature of the upper TVT are the five crossings of the Thredbo River via three large suspension bridges and two archway bridges spanning the sub alpine river. The lower 24km TVT unofficially starts at Lake Crackenback Resort, the resort also providing the perfect lunch stop between the two sections before heading to Bullocks Flat and the Skitube (train)

bridge across the Thredbo River for the start of the track. Spectacular views of the Thredbo River are on offer from points both close to the water’s edge and from high vistas. Although heading down the valley, the lay of the land isn’t all easy going. The lower TVT gives a sense of remoteness as it runs entirely on the north western side of the Thredbo River. There is no access or exit points
other than the start or the finish of the track which should be considered for ability level. It is more difficult than the upper section. As of early September, there was no set date for the opening although it is expected to be in October. It will be mostly weather dependant to allow the track to dry sufficiently after winter. Stay tuned to social media for final opening updates.

Short Term Rental Changes OWNERS who supply properties for the short-term rental accommodation (STRA) market may not be aware that the NSW Government is implementing a new regulatory framework for the industry. This includes a state-wide planning framework, a mandatory Code of Conduct and changes to strata legislation. The NSW Government is also considering the introduction of a new industry-led STRA property register. The framework intends to ensure local communities enjoy the economic benefits of STRA, while managing potential adverse impacts. Interested parties can have their say on the draft documents by registering their feedback by September 11, 2019. In August 2018 the NSW Parliament passed the Fair Trading Amendment (Short-term Rental Accommodation) Act 2018 which allows for the proposed changes. The Department of Customer Service and Department of Planning, Industry and Environment welcome feedback from the community, government agencies, councils, industry and other
stakeholders during consultation. Feedback is welcome on these points, with all details available on the website. x Short-term Rental Accommodation: A new regulatory framework Discussion paper x Draft Code of Conduct for the Short-term Rental Accommodation Industry x Draft Fair Trading Amendment (Code of Conduct for Short-term Rental Accommodation Industry) Regulation 2019 x Draft State Environmental Planning Policy (Short-term Rental Accommodation) 2019 x Draft Environmental Planning and Assessment (Short-term Rental Accommodation) Regulation 2019 and accompanying ‘Short-term Rental Fire Safety Standard’. Local Businesses Gold Awards TWO local Snowy Mountains businesses have been recognised at the 2019 Destination Sydney Surrounds South and Destination Southern NSW Regional Tourism Awards in Ulladulla. Eucumbene Trout Farm had a very successful night winning gold in the ‘Tourist Attraction’ category, plus taking home a bronze medal in the ’Ecotourism’ category. Located on Stoney Creek Road at Rocky Plains, between Jindabyne and Berridale, Eucumbene Trout Farm attracts up to 6000 visitors per year who visit to see a working trout farm, plus catch fish. The venue has a café as well as accommodation, and guests can also cook their freshly caught trout on the supplied BBQ’s. The venue is highly popular with families where kids are thrilled to catch their own fish. In recent years they have won regional wards for the trout farm, plus awards for their smoked trout which is available at the farm. Winners in 10 categories were announced at the awards presentation night from finalists including tourism businesses, events, restaurants, wineries and accommodation providers. More than
60 industry representatives were in attendance to see who would take home the coveted awards. Lake Crackenback Resort captured the gold award in the ‘Deluxe Accommodation’ category, the first time the resort has entered the regional awards. Marketing Manager Rebecca Hedger said they were very proud to bring home the gold award. “To nominate for the awards we have to write a 12,500 word submission about how the Resort is committed to tourism excellence, who our target markets are, what sustainable practices the Resort has, how the Resort contributes to the local economy as well as sharing any innovations that have been implemented at the Resort over the last financial year,” said Rebecca. “We have so many great stories to tell here at the Resort and within the region that its actually quite interesting and enjoyable putting together the submission.” Both Lake Crackenback Resort and Eucumbene Trout Farm now qualify as finalists for the NSW State Awards to be held in Sydney in November. If successful there they would progress to the Australian tourism awards.

National Snowsports Training Centre NSW Government commits $5 million to new National Snowsports Training Centre in Jindabyne incorporating a cutting-edge dry slope airbag facility. ATHLETES will be the winner after the NSW Government’s announcement of a $5 million grant towards the establishment of a National Snowsports Training Centre (NSTC) in Jindabyne. To be incorporated within the existing Sport & Recreation site, Australia’s winter sports athletes will benefit from a new world class, year-round training facility in the lead up to the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing and beyond. A key feature of the NSTC will be a cutting-edge dry slope airbag facility, the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere. The airbag provides a reduced risk training environment for the Park and Pipe programs of skiing and snowboarding which has proven to be critical to the success of athletes in these disciplines, globally. The announcement by the NSW Minister for Sport, John Sidoti, and Deputy Premier, John Barilaro was well
received by all athletes and the snowsport community. NSW Deputy Premier, John Barilaro said it is very special that athletes can now be training on a dry slope airbag and then 40 minutes up the road they’ll be on the snow. “It is fantastic to be able to assist our winter athletes achieve their goals close to home,” Mr Barilaro said. “For a long time our winter athletes have had to train overseas for most of the year, but this new training tool will mean that they can stay with their families and train at home.” Minister for Sport John Sidoti said the new air bag was an asset to winter sport and the future development of athletes. “This air bag is the first of its kind in Australia and will help put our winter athletes on a level playing field with the best in the world,” Mr Sidoti said. Ski & Snowboard Australia (SSA) CEO
Michael Kennedy confirmed the establishment of a National Snowsports Training Centre (NSTC) as critical to the sustained success of our athletes in an increasingly competitive international sporting environment. “The NSTC will have a profound impact on Australian athletes’ capacity to maintain and enhance their international competitiveness,” said Kennedy. “The NSTC will also serve as a permanent administration base for SSA’s Northern activities which includes programs for the entire athlete pathway.” Along with the airbag facility, the vision is to create a world class training facility for the off-snow daily training environment (DTE) for athletes at
the pre-elite, development and elite performance levels. The airbag technology will allow Slope Style and Big Air competitors to perfect their tricks on a giant inflatable bag before they go onto the snow, greatly reducing the risk of injury. Olympic Snowboarder, Tess Coady said, “It’s a lot more comfortable when you’re trying new tricks that might be really scary or you’re just a bit frightened of.” Additionally, SSA is aiming to ensure affordable athlete accommodation as part of the overall NSTC concept. SSA said they look forward to working with the NSW Office of Sport, NSWIS and the local community to maximise this special opportunity to deliver a sport focused, world class facility which ensures Australian athletes will be equipped to enjoy success into the future.

Skiing Power Couple WHEN you invite the biggest names in skiing to visit the Australian snowďŹ elds, you better lay out the snow welcome mat in grand style. This was the scenario for Cody Townsend and Elyse Saugstad, two huge names in the free skiing world who visited Thredbo in August plus had a taste of our backcountry snow. Cody and Elyse could be described as the power couple of free skiing, Cody boasting 132k instagram followers and Elyse 46k followers, so you know the ski world will be watching their every move. Cody was in Australia for ďŹ nal product testing of his Le Bent pro model Le Send sock, the ďŹ rst ski touring speciďŹ c ski sock on the market. After a few days surďŹ ng on the northern beaches of Sydney, they bundled into the car of Le Bent co-founder Simon Blondel, timing their Snowy Mountains arrival to near perfection arriving just before the biggest storm of the season. Joining the Thredbo Backcountry Guides they had a quick ski tour to Mt Kosciuszko and blasted around the Thredbo groomed runs as an introduction. Their ďŹ rst powder day was spent lapping Thredbo resort skiing legendary powder
runs of Funnel Web and Golf Course plus popping off all the natural features in the trees. “We got a metre of snow just as we showed up. Which I soon understood was not the norm. Everyone was pumped, said Cody. “When we got the fresh snow, I was pretty blown away by how fun the mountain was. There were little terrain hits everywhere. It [Thredbo] was actually way more fun than some of the places I’d skied back East, in North America, because there were just so many little terrain features. I had a blast. With the snow now set in, the group spent the day touring out from Deadhorse Gap and testing the Le Send sock. It was typical Australian storm conditions including strong winds and deep wind packed powder. Cody and Elyse were both amazed by the gumtrees where they broke trail with 30cm of powder in places on the uphill and thigh deep turns in pockets through the trees coming back down. Very light, dry powder by Aussie standards. “I didn’t really anticipate too much, you know I couldn’t expect the mountains to be quite like my home mountains in Alyeska, Alaska, said Elyse. “Obviously Australia’s not known for that

but honestly I’ve been impressed. I mean the mountains aren’t huge, but there’s a lot of terrain and lots of pitches. Maybe it’s not one steep descent like Alaska, but there’s plenty of fun terrain here.â€? Standing in line at Thredbo for ďŹ rst chairs at Gunbarrell on Saturday morning, plenty of skiers recognised the two who chatted with everyone as the anticipation built for a big snow day. The crew are used to backcountry conditions and traversed out of bounds to Stanley’s where they were ďŹ rst people
there. After a few ski cuts they noted some convexities to avoid and skied two lines for the camera and boot packed back up. A handful of skiers and boarders then entered the zone, one of whom kicked off a decent little slide above their unsuspecting friend at the bottom. That was enough for the crew who headed back to the resort. Linking up with the Thredbo Mountain Academy, they rode with 25 plus excited youngsters. Spurred on by encouragement from Cody and Elyse, the group were blasting away all over the mountain. There

After lunch Cody and Elyse held a Q&A where kids asked more questions plus listened to an avalanche safety brief with respect to what the crew witnessed that morning. Elyse said it was great fun to get out with the kids from the Thredbo Mountain Academy. “They were just so excited to be out there skiing. And that’s what it’s all about with the kids. Following them through the gum trees was hilarious and a pretty surefire way to get slapped by a branch of gum leaves.” The final leg to their Australia sojourn was an early Monday morning start for a day touring the main range and western faces. Guided by Snowy Mountains Backcountry, they departed from Guthega carpark at 7:30am on what started as a beautiful bluebird day. Skinning through snow gums up to Mt Twynam, they had five minutes to survey some of the burlier lines Australia has to offer before the clouds engulfed the mountains. After waiting a few hours but unable to ski the lines they came for, they retreated to the treeline. Both Cody and Elyse admitted the backcountry lived up to the hype and there were some genuinely big lines. The timing was perfect for the couples visit with Le Bent’s Simon Blondel saying “It doesn’t get much better than this”, referring to the big snowfall. Plenty of people were stoked to run into the pow(d)er couple, and the connection between the two coming down under and the storm of the season occurring simultaneous wasn’t lost either. Hence, plenty of people - both in person and online - joked that they are both welcome back any time if they promise to bring the same conditions with them.

Glacier Creek and Rendezvous Lodges are big day lodges with all the facilities you could want, whilst Christine’s is a full-service lunch experience. Whistler often gets abundant early season snowfalls, with an average of more than two metres per month in November and December alone, so a pre-Christmas trip can be a great idea to avoid school holidays or other blackout periods. The access to Whistler is pretty straight forward with flights from Australia with Air Canada and Qantas direct to Vancouver in winter. This is a vibrant and beautiful city on the water, well worth a few days to explore on either side of your snow holiday. From Vancouver, there are bus transfers or private shuttles to get you to Whistler or if you have accommodation with parking, a rental car allows you to stop along the two hour drive and take in the magnificent views along the Sea to Sky Highway over the waters of Howe Sound, the world’s most southerly fjord. Interview on Perisher’s Future SINCE Vail Resorts purchased Perisher, people are interested to know what plans the resort have for a village, more beds and summer. Currently Perisher Resort and the Nationals Parks (NPWS) are in discussion regarding the head lease in Perisher Valley. The NPWS have jurisdiction over Perisher Valley, but they have entered into discussions as they would prefer Perisher to take over the head lease. Before any future development could take place within the NPWS jurisdiction, winter or summer, there needs to be clarification on who has control of the head lease, and then what is actually feasible to do. As part of our ongoing interviews, we asked Peter Brulisauer, Vail Resorts Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Australia and Perisher, what his thoughts were on the future. SUMMER OPERATIONS He said Vail Resorts do operate a network of resorts around America, Canada and some include summer operations. “As a group we understand the business of summer very well, of course we operate Whistler, which is widely acknowledged as being one of the best summer resorts in the
world,” said Brulisauer. “We understand what makes Whistler tick and we also really appreciate the nature of Perisher and what the environmental constraints are, what the weather constraints are and what the village constraints are and what we would be up against in terms of making the investments to compete with other resorts and other summer attractions to make Perisher a viable summer destination. “We think that is a significant task to be able to make summer operation in Perisher commercial. But we are interested in it and we really are interested in talking to the Government about what that opportunity might look like. But ultimately, that opportunity has to be commercial for us.” “Ultimately, there has to be a return out of that investment and one we think is going to be sustainable in the long term. “Also the environment we operate up here is fragile and there are a lot of threatened species around and when we look around to where we might build trails, we see a significant amount of hurdles to be able to get over to be able to construct an extensive trail network in the resort.” We asked the question could Perisher Valley be year-round, without involving
Perisher and the actual mountain, particularly if other lodges were interested to be open. “You would have to talk to them, but at the end of the day, I think they would give us the same answer, each one of these commercial lodges, you refer to, they are business’s as well.” “So, to the extent that summer activity could be commercial, yes, I think they would be interested. They are also aware of the challenges in making things commercial and there has been a number of master plans completed over time for the Village, which you know is the responsibility of National Parks and Wildlife Service to plan and manage under the current leasing arrangement, and the Park Service and NSW Government has responsibility for those sorts of things. “Those masterplans for one reason or another really haven’t delivered anything that might improve the summer amenity of the Resort. Right now, the amenity of the Resort been designed around a winter use and hence a big scale, like the Skitube building, and summer scale looks a lot different.”

CREATING MORE BEDS We asked would Perisher like to have more beds in Perisher Valley and if so how is that feasible in the coming years. Mr Brulisauer said “yes” they would like more beds and pointed out that the NPWS indicated when the Perisher Village was proposed there was enough environmental capacity to have about another 1300 beds in Perisher. Going back nearly 10 years, the NPWS released 500 of those 1300 beds that went largely into existing properties. “There was no new properties built for

those 500 beds. Then the balance of that 1300 beds was earmarked for the village which obviously didn’t eventuate. There are some approved beds for Perisher at the moment in the context of the plan management. So, the environmental capacity has shown to be there.” “There has been a couple of master plans to show potential where those beds could go. On that basis it is certainly possible to construct those beds. The Government would obviously have to reach an agreement with developers to see those beds realised.” We asked could a developer approach the Government and National Parks to
get approval and then build to house the available 800 beds. But the question could be would any developer be likely to want to build. “As it works now, there is an expectation that any beds developed in the Resort would be consistent with the Master Plan and while its quite old, it is still a relevant factor. The Government would need to determine to grant beds to someone to build them.” “There is environment capacity for more beds to be built. I think there is a very good agreement that they should be built because there hasn’t been new beds built in Perisher for many, many decades and over that time
as population has grown in the country, so too has the number of people who want to go skiing. “We find more and more people wanting to come in is by car, which puts pressure on roads, on car parking and we have seen in recent years the Barilaro/Berejiklian Government invest $10 million dollars to widen the road from the Barry Way to the Alpine Way which has really improved access capacity but it means more pressure on carparking. “I think guests are starting to say,” why can’t we stay on mountain”. “Perisher has the fewest on mountain
beds by a long way in any Australian ski resort. At the same time, Perisher has the most number of skier visits of any Australian ski resort. It is a legitimate question. The environmental capacity is there, there is demand and there is pressure on carparking and there is pressure on roads and it really should happen. “Number one, I think the impact on the environment would be less by housing more people up here. Jindabyne is still growing strongly and building more beds in Perisher is not going to take anything away from Jindabyne. It will only add to the vibrancy of Jindabyne over time as more people provide service up to Perisher Resorts.” “Guests ultimately would like to stay on snow.” In the near future could you see Perisher developing hotels to accommodate those beds. “I think the Government at some point, need to revisit the masterplan to where those beds should go. No at this stage we don’t have any plans.” Summarising the interview, it continues to revolve back to the situation that at present the NPWS are responsible for any future development, and those management plans now are so old and have sat on the shelf for so long, the dust has crystallised. The NSW State Government need to address some concerns and move into current era.

Slush Bumps and Long Lunch By Gina Woodward WE love awesome August snowfalls because it normally means great things for Spring. And don’t us Aussies love a good spring ski or ride until the very end… because for many of us it’s a long while before we may see snow again, even if we do get OS for a northern stint. Spring is often when the well-developed skills of the Aussie skiers shines brightest. Having to deal with a firm morning start, and then progressively softer conditions means we adapt to conditions by the hour. Days during spring often start with cold nights, meaning firm corduroy for a few hours, sunny mornings soon leading to soft snow and good times as you peel of layers. Yes, even at 5 degrees we think that is t-shirt weather and don’t we love working hard on the goggle tan before packing the skis and boards away for summer. Now that we have set the tone of what to expect, here is a quick guide to your Perisher spring day.
Hit the slopes that face the sun early and leave the others until later in the day. The Ridge Chair by far one of the best choices after the sun has baked it from sunrise. Long carved soft turns are great for the ego as well and Outer Limits is worthwhile for a try. Mid-morning you encounter prime time, where you can find perfect corduroy before applying another layer of sunscreen. Roller Coaster from the top of Pleasant Valley is a favourite long run and circumnavigate Mt Perisher as it evolves by the hour. Who doesn’t love slush bumps? Those mogul runs that may have spat you out in solid conditions over winter are suddenly your new best friend. They may not be there when you start off on a spring morning, but you can be guaranteed by lunchtime there will be bump runs everywhere. For slush bump heaven check out the moguls on Showboat at Blue Cow, skiers left of Eyre T-Bar at lunch time and of course around the corner from the

Olympic T-Bar dog leg where the sun is prominent. These could be your best Olympic skiing moments. Long lunches in the sunshine are a spring pastime, so relax and don’t be in a hurry. Great dining options include The Burning Log at Guthega, Pretty Valley Kiosk for some rocking tunes, MidStation with views and outdoor tables, Sundeck for an afternoon tipple and halfpipe spectator action, or Eyre Café for an ‘Awesome Eyre Burger’ in the sun. The Blue Cow deck is perfect for a cold ale, maybe a cocktail at the Marritz or an après at the Man From Snowy River Hotel. So many options. If your legs are done and you’ve had your skiing fill, consider an early finish and mountain massage and spa at “The Man”. After lunch Guthega is at its superb best where the sun has steadily softened the snowpack. Zali’s at Blue Cow has a similar aspect and can be glorious fun from lunch onwards.

Disabled Wintersport Fundraiser Success THE snow community came together in mid August for a true show of support for the annual Disabled Winterport Australia’s fundraiser. The Disabled Winter Fun’d event was a huge success with 250 tickets sold at Jindabyne’s Memorial Hall and over $20,000 raised for Disabled Wintersport. Organisers still had donations flowing in after the event. Disabled athletes along with family and friends were all in a jovial mood as prizes were auctioned and generous support shown from all. Event organisers should be congratulated for turning this event into

one of the biggest on the winter calendar, with Rick Coate, Chief Executive Office of Disabled Winterport Australia saying it was terrific and all done with volunteers. “The community of Jindabyne, Perisher and Thredbo and beyond really rallied, and I think it really resonated with everyone what we do. I am very proud of what we have achieved,” said Rick. One of the highlights of the evening was a speech made from Gretta Serov who has cerebral palsy. The whole room came to complete silence as Gretta, who uses her nose on an ipad to communicate, had a pre drafted speech read to the audience to huge applause. The following day Gretta skied at Friday Flat, Thredbo in a sit ski. The event, previously held at Jindabyne Brewery had outgrown that venue, and this night has now set the tone for the coming years. Disabled Winterport Australia assist people across all the major snow resorts to enjoy the snow and money raised will go towards more equipment to continue this great support. Each resort has a number of guides and volunteers who all create lasting memories for the athletes. Patron of Disabled Wintersport Australia, Richard de Crespigny said it

POND SKIM The October long weekend sees the pond skim events at both Perisher and Thredbo. This is truly a fun day and one that anyone can participate. A day where the hectic winter ďŹ nally winds down and adults and children head for a pre summer dip. Fancy dress is deďŹ nitely the order of the day, and no matter how you turnout for the occasion or whatever colour you wear, it is all taken as a gesture of fun. More importantly is to try and conquer the pond by skimming all the way across and make it out still dry. But as with any great plans, it can become unstuck with most pulling up short to a very cold surprise. Let’s just say a pool of water surrounded by snow is not going to be your balmy beach temperature. As far as spectacles go, this is highly entertaining to the crowds who watch from the side lines to see the look on
Four Pillars Gin Pig Feast FOR a feast you don’t often encounter, be sure to book the Thredbo Alpine Hotel’s upcoming special evening of feasting and fun at the Four Pillars Gin pig dinner. The September 10 event ads a twist on pork flavouring with pigs being fed the spent botanicals that created the award winning Four Pillars Gin. Four Pillars harnesses extraordinary flavour from a combination of rare, native and traditional botanicals. Once the distillation process is over the crew at Four Pillars realised the fantastic combination of flavours could be put to good use. Hence, they decided to turn dining on its head with the creation of the Four Pillars gin pig dinners! Collaborating with a local Victorian breeder, Yarra Valley Berkshires, the rare breed pure black Berkshire pigs are fed the spent juniper, coriander seeds, cardamom, star anise, lavender, lemon myrtle and, occasionally, turmeric and ginger. This nose-to-tail distilling approach means these flavours emanate through the meat to create a truly delicious experience.

One of the best is the adventurous trek to the roof of Australia which can be done on either mode of transport. Climbing to the top of Mt Kosciuszko on a bluebird sunny day is exhilarating. The view seems endless and you can brush up on your mountain geography, as all the big peaks can be seen. The 14-kilometre trek includes 600m of vertical climbing, mostly gradual ascending and a last push to the summit. For skier and snowboarders, etching your finest turns down the face of Kosciuszko is a bucket list adventure, and not one that everyone has experienced. For the more serious skier or snowboarder, who also have extra stamina and fitness, the Twin Valleys and Leatherbarrel Creek offer all day adventures. Farewell the Bear ONE of Thredbo’s most iconic venues, the Black Bear Inn will shut its doors in its present form for the last time at seasons end. The building will be demolished, and a new establishment built in the coming years. The Black Bear has a colourful history and has been the most popular venue in Thredbo for both the visiting skier and village residents. Designed in typical Tyrolean fashion of accommodation plus bar and restaurant, the venue has witnessed some wild nights, none more so than when legendary Austrian, Kurt Brandauer and wife Marita were at the helm. Kurt and Marita were engaged at the “Bear” with Kurt renowned for his zest for life. He worked in the Thredbo ski school for many years but was in his element behind the bar, ringing the bell and serving his friends and patrons. Kurt passed away in 2017, and the wake at the “Bear” was a fitting celebration of his life. “From four o’clock on the activity just happened, there was never really a quiet night. That was him, he thrived on that, that was how he lived. It was

an entertaining time, Kurt was an entertaining man,” said Marita on their time managing the Black Bear from 198697. “The biggest thing was the actual lodge scene we brought to it. The fun and people enjoying the mountain atmosphere.” Some of the biggest nights were for the Austrian slap dancing nights. “We eventually started having them three nights a week. The Austrian boys lived at the lodge, so that made for an atmosphere all the time.” Marita said they moved on for the children, daughters Anneliese and Giddy. “They were at a stage where they needed to live outside a boot cupboard. Those days in the lodges we had one bedroom we lived in. I turned the laundry into their bedroom. I took the door off and built a set of bunks. The kids slept in the boot cupboard.” Marita said a lot of the items still in the restaurant and bar were brought back from Austria by Kurt and herself. The Black Bear was owned by the Sommer family since 1971. Max Fryer and Emma Sommer were running the lodge prior to Kurt and Marita’s time. Allan and Helen Satchell followed as managers and for the past nine years current managers Sandy Connor and Steve Mason have been running the lodge. “I have some very fond memories and fun times, and lots of friends,” said Sandy. Sandy said they continue to have comments from patrons who said they would be disappointed that the original Black Bear will be no longer. “Times have changed, mainly due to the licensing laws. We still get people come in and talk about Kurt, and refer to him, and the Austrian ski school guys still keep coming in.” Sandy said they are looking forward to a change, they will eventually move to Canberra, but will miss Thredbo.
◼
HOSTS: Current hosts Sandy Connor and Steve Mason.
Both Sandy and Steve have been long term residents of the village and ran the gift shop for five years. Steve has been in the village for over 25 years, having worked for many years with Rudi Schatzle and family. Crag “Daf” Daly worked at the Black Bear when he arrived at Thredbo in the early 1990’s. He met Steve who Daf would serve drinks. Those roles have reversed now, Daf in his favourite bar being served by Steve. “There was myself, Noddy and Alfie, we used to work in the bar together. They were the days that had the Austrian nights. Kurt would often create a Congo line after dinner service when the bar was going, Everyone would storm outside singing and dancing, and up the street and around the corner and back in again,” said Daf. “It’s an iconic building, I think it is really hard to duplicate anything that has a history as long, as varied like the Black Bear, the culture behind it, it is very hard to duplicate that in a new place.” The new Black Bear is still in DA process. It is proposed to be apartments and will include a restaurant and parking.
◼
CELEBRATE: There have been many a good night at the “Bear”.
◼
LEGEND: Kurt Brandauer brought joy to many Thredbo visitors.
Thredbo Resort said it “is very positive about the development and the fact that developers are keen to invest in the future of Thredbo.” After the season there will be a fitting send off to such a popular venue, and a great farewell to the Bear.

CHALLENGE: Test yourself on either of two route distances.
L’Étape Le Four THE L’Étape Australia cycling race found its niche in 2018 with a revised race format encompassing both the longer 170km Race and the 108km Ride starting and finishing in Banjo Paterson Park in Jindabyne. The event sees cyclists’ race on closed roads in a true ‘Tour de France’ style and will run for the fourth consecutive year in late November. One of the biggest drawcards is the terrain where riders can test themselves in conditions similar to their professional idols. There is not shortage of tough climbs, none more so than the infamous Col be Beloka on the road from Dalgety to Jindabyne. During the first L’Étape Australia event this steep section took its toll on the unsuspecting riders. They were not only reduced to walking parts of the hill, they also vowed revenge and each year it is a major talking point of the entrants. Organisers have not yet confirmed where the event will be staged in 2020, so this could very well be the last chance entrants can compete on closed roads on both Col de Beloka and the tough Col de Kosciuszko, a 33km climb from Jindabyne to Perisher. Since its inception, the local community
have embraced the event showing their support along the roadside with colourful banners and cheering riders as they pass. This has been one of the highlights for the riders who relish the support and the atmosphere. Organisers are again seeking the help of the local community for volunteers and have reinforced the volunteer managers role for greater support of volunteers. They have scheduled a volunteer meeting on September 30, stay tuned to local media for the venue and time, or email organisers at volunteers@letapeaustralia. com to offer your services. The L’Étape Australia race is on Saturday November 30 this year. To enter visit www.letapeaustralia.com.
VISIT: Enjoy the atmosphere of the Bombala races.
Bombala Races Oct 19 LOOKING for a great day out with atmosphere and excitement, then head to the Bombala Races on Saturday October 19. The race day coincides with the Caulfield Cup race in Melbourne and is a great country race meeting on the picturesque Bombala track. For the keen punter the event has tab and bookie facilities for local and interstate races, and if you are just attending for the social occasion, dress up in your finest and consider entering the fashions on the field. The fashion event adds colour and style
to the day’s celebrations, keeping the crowd well entertained in between trying your best to pick a few winning bets. All ages can enter the fashions, so ladies, start designing your fascinator now. The feature Bombala Cup race is sponsored by Dongwha Timbers, a major local business, there is a marquee more formal lunch, and the bar is always well stocked. The course is situated just south of town via the Delegate Road and Bombala is a one hour drive south of Cooma. Visit the Bombala Races Facebook page for more details.

Gruelling Five Hour Race WHEN it comes to adventure and adrenalin sports, Jennie Milton, kite skier and local ski guide has a continued thirst to push the limits. Jennie, who appears on our Spring Cover recently competed in the world’s largest snow kite competition in Norway, a gruelling 150km ‘Ragnarok Red Bull’ five hour race. The name “Ragnarok” stems from an incident in Norse mythology, describing the last battle between the good and evil Gods, where only the heroes of the battlefield survive. “The start was my biggest fear to not get tangled in the 250 kites,” said Jennie. “I went to a downwind position which kept me out of danger but then the challenge of getting through the first gate with so many kites. The wind died on the hill to the second gate and I had to drag my kite and carry my skis for over twenty minutes. Over layered for hiking I was stoked to have great venting and went into Octopus mode (arms through vents).” Knowing it would be tough, Jennie had dedicated each lap to friends, family and for people with depression, a way of self-motivating herself to push harder. “This mental strategy a brilliant idea from James”, her mentor back home at Tabourie, Having walked through gate two Jennie felt some wind and launched her kite again and “took a chance of going up the cornice on windward side”. “This wasn’t the best decision as the ridge on top was all rocks and I crashed the kite. Worried that my kite was damaged, and the race might be over for me, but it relaunched, I walked over rocks and back in action. I prayed to my friend Laura Green to send me some wind and she did. I was now powered
up and going at full speed (dedicated to Dad) to complete my first lap.” On her second lap Jennie had improved overtaking many kites. Hoping that the Milton race genes (brother Michael is Australia’s fastest skier) were running in her blood, the third lap proved to be her fastest. “Lap four was getting tougher as the snow had softened under the sun and got very sticky making for slower speeds and more pressure on my arms. I was doing lap four for people with depression and their families. Dealing with depression was way tougher than what I was doing and the pain I was feeling in my arms and legs was nothing in comparison to the pain the mothers and families feel when depression wins.” “I made it through lap four and now it was time to do the last lap for ME!” “My mouth had been pasty for three laps and I’d drunk all my water. Food didn’t go down and I spat it out. So, I stuck to the plan and grabbed a Redbull through the fifth gate. This gave me a boost and I continued. “But now things got even tougher as the wind was dropping and my speed was slowing down. The final gate was in site and I had 10 minutes to go (five hour cut off) but I knew this was an impossible task to skate to the finish in time. “Five hours was done this was my finish. So close but I knew I’d given it my all. A skidoo dropped me back at my kites and I packed up. Unfortunately, I didn’t leave enough energy to get back to the bus and I collapsed from dehydration. Opening my eyes to see a group of organisers and first aid above me. “It was hours later that I discovered that my effort had got me into 2nd place behind

Draft Release of Jindabyne Masterplan By Steve Cuff WHEN the Go Jindabyne 2036 Draft Masterplan is released for public exhibition this spring, residents and interested parties who want to offer genuine feedback would be best advised to spend time studying the documents. Although the planners have bounced their ideas of several local working groups before releasing the draft, realistically this is the best chance ever of making positive improvement to Jindabyne and its surrounds. This will not be the time for social media ranting, that will not achieve anything. If you are genuinely concerned about the local community, read the details of each report and then submit constructive feedback through the correct channels. The NSW State Government have initiated and invested $2.4 million towards creating this masterplan, and as a collective group we can now tell them exactly what we think of their vision. Prior to winter many residents and interested parties attended the forums to inform the planners how they envisioned Jindabyne going forward. It is not just about Jindabyne the
town, the mountain resorts need huge consideration as well. We all understand the impact the snow has during winter and the State Government need to address many issues if they want to tick all the boxes. Compare NSW TO Victorian snow resorts and we seriously lack beds in the alpine region. Currently Perisher and the National Parks are in discussion about a head lease. While some might think this does not affect Jindabyne, it does. The National Parks have been dragging the chain on this subject and the State Government need to step in now and tell them to fast track negotiations, so everyone knows where they stand. The population has increased significantly in the past few decades, yet we are still working with infrastructure that was in place well over 20 years ago. It is not much point developing Jindabyne to be a grand destination without looking at all the fringe areas that affect our town, and more so how visitors perceive us. This winter, like dozens of winters prior parking has been a weekend concern in the alpine and it can

be addressed in many ways. One solution is to have more beds in the resorts, another to seriously look at infrastructure solutions. The NSW Planners have advised of their ten principles they are working toward, but it will be interesting to see all the detail around these points, the time frames to enact them and how it all gels together.
Naturally it can’t all be done or built immediately, we don’t expect that, but the NSW State Government needs to step up to the plate with serious investment to implement it all. Be sure to study the draft masterplan and submit all your feedback within the timeframe advised, and then see what final plan is presented after the planners absorb all your feedback.

Progress for Heritage Centre By Steve Cuff With the Jindabyne Masterplan currently underway, planners should not underestimate the huge potential the Snowy Alpine Heritage project has to assist greatly with ‘true’ year-round tourism potential for the region. Local based TRC Tourism have been busy behind the scenes pulling together valid information for their feasibility study. The latest update is that the Snowy Alpine Heritage Association committee has agreed on the strategic directions for the centre and the economist is currently putting together the demand modelling and economic impact assessments, based on inputs from TRC Tourism, Dabyne Planning and Thylacine. Thylacine, based in Canberra are experts in their field of design, concept and implementation of some of the biggest name visitor centres and museums, including the War Memorial in Canberra. Alexander Gillespie from Thylacine said they are envisaging a space for
exploration and learning that frames both the past and present histories. “The histories include five main themes, first peoples, pioneering and settler families, the Snowy Hydro scheme and the story of migration to the area, the leisure and the land as well,” said Alex. This project is only in preliminary stages, but when the study is completed the public can expect a broader overall view of its huge potential. Jindabyne’s Tom Barry, a driving force behind the idea said meetings so far has resulted in everyone having a similar vision and that the Snowy Mountains is a great story and one they want to tell. “Our vision has been incredibly expanded by what they’ve brought in and showed us what can be done, and at the same time I think they have grasped what our vision is. We want to tell this magnificent narrative of the Snowy Mountains and they’re showing us how it can be done, and it is incredibly exciting,” said Tom.

Come for the Snow, Stay for the Fun Each year I host two Monaro Service Awards ceremonies in Queanbeyan and Cooma. These awards are designed to acknowledge and celebrate many true community champions in our region.
◼ STUNNING: When it comes to snow Big White Ski Resort has bucket loads of it. PHOTOS: Courtesy of Geoff Holman and Big White Ski Resort.
The people awarded with a Monaro Service award dedicate an enormous amount of time to their community and selflessly give their support to a number of organisations. Monaro Service Awards are just one way I can say thank you to these hard working people. I am always amazed by the incredible work undertaken in our community and it was an honour to be able to recognise many generous individuals from within the Monaro. Recipients were: John Talbot, Stephen Geoghegan, Jane Jones, Victoria Thivy, Gary Harb, Laurel Rosin, Roza Tomeska, Kylie Johnson, Megan Scott, Terry Chalk, Casey Clarke, Barbara Fernance, Lisa McGowan, Adolf Franco, Peter Graham, Deidre Clarke, Geoffrey Simpson, Meagan Power and Teyarnea Griffis. Outstanding Community Groups were: Braidwood and District Historical Society, The women of Queanbeyan Calendar, Lake Light Sculpture Inc., Cooma Monaro Historic Automobile Club and The Nimmitabel Show Society. These people and groups have advocated for our community, selflessly given to the organisations they are a part of, and continuously offer their time for the betterment of our region. The resounding message I received when presenting awards to each of the recipients was that these people do not do what they do for the recognition, they do it to make their home a better place. I think that really embodies the Monaro as a whole. We are a community that will always assist because we love what we do. I congratulate the award recipients on their fantastic contributions to our local community, and I thank them for their hard work. The next Monaro Service Awards will be held in early 2020 and I encourage everyone in the community to nominate a person or community group they feel should be recognised for their hard work and dedication. Nominations can be emailed to monaro@parliament.nsw.gov.au and should include the person or group’s name, address, contact details and description of their work. I look forward to celebrating the next round of Monaro’s incredible volunteers. monaro@parliament.nsw.gov.au www.johnbarilaro.com.au 213 Crawford St, (PO Box 998) Queanbeyan NSW 2620 Ph: 02 6299 4899 - Fax: 02 6297 9998 JohnBarilaroMP

The Legend of
Alta - Utah ◼
DEEP: Tyler Knoles skiing legendary Alta powder. PHOTO: Alta Ski Area / Matt Wolfe
By Steve Cuff AS an aspiring snow photographer hooked on skiing in the early 90’s, I remember scouring magazines for exotic snow stories and admiring with envy deep powder photos. I could not ski that deep snow at the time, but that cared for little, it was all about the dream of wanting to and where. Reading Powder Magazine stories about legendary snowfalls at Alta in Utah captivated my imagination. Skiing a resort where they evoke the Interlodge rule, one where you are not allowed to leave any establishment should the steep slopes on either side of Little Cottonwood Canyon release and engulf you. And if you do leave you are fined by the police, this is serious snow. Lee Cohen is one of the great snow photographers who cut his teeth on the slopes of Alta and neighbouring Snowbird plus features countless times in Powder Magazine, the bible for skiers. Along the way he added to the folklore of Little

Cottonwood Canyon and defining Utah as a legendary powder mecca. Seeing Cohen’s images of skiers plundering powder, snow blasting well over head, faces full of snow and deep, it always seemed so deep, inspired many to visit Alta. Fortunately, I have skied Alta and Snowbird on several occasions, and while I still await my time to plunder that waist deep day of light dry powder, it does not matter. The images are there entrenched in my mind of what it is like. Plus, in all the days I have visited, the terrain and snow quality has been exceptional and accompanied by several powder days. Utah has become one of my favourite ski destinations and more so after the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. Having fond memories of capturing our first two gold medals with Steven Bradbury and Alisa Camplin only added to the allure. But for me it is all about the skiing, the terrain and the snow, plus being so close to Salt Lake City and the airport, you can be skiing in a very short time once you step off the plane. Hence why it is called Ski City. This past winter I was privileged to have lunch with the Alta crew at Alta Lodge. Communications Manager Andria Huskinson also invited Lee Cohen. To have lunch, talk photos and then cut a few laps on the legendary High Rustler run in a snowstorm was just the icing on the cake. Like many snow photographers Lee had his snow sabbatical saying he came out west after two years of college. “I went to Denver and ended up in the mountains at A Basin camping out, my buddy and I, we camped out for three months and were total ski bums,” said Lee. “We went on some road trips, I had heard of Alta, I don’t remember how I first heard about Alta, we had heard of the
powder myth and we went to Alta and I made up my mind I’m going to go to Alta when I get out of college. The day I got out of college I came here.” Lee said there were no other photographers at Alta at the time, but some at Snowbird. When he first started shooting Powder Magazine was the only place he submitted photos. He was first published in the mid 1980’s Now he says he cheery pics his days, “I have been spoilt by a lot of good years and skiing a lot of great snow.” “The photos get dictated by light and a lot of photography happens out of bounds now. I cling to my spots pretty hard. None of them are secret, there are no secrets around here, there are too many people. I have this one place I shoot it’s called Cohen’s Corner, or Lee’s Trees, everybody knows where it is. “It is just the perfect spot and I always go in there before anybody else, so I have seniority for going there more or less.” Driving into Little Cottonwood Canyon to Snowbird and a further two kilometres to Alta you would think they have made a mistake with the names. Big Cottonwood Canyon is the next canyon where Solitude and Brighton resorts are, all available on the ski city pass. Mount Superior dominates the sky and as you gaze upwards to the terrain you are about to enjoy; it is seriously impressive. As much as these two behemoth powder resorts beckon the off piste poacher, there is terrain for all levels, although Alta is a skiers only mountain. The beauty is the choices, and those who have skied will understand. You can ski very steep runs from a simple traverse or step over one rise and drop into to another long run. When the snow is on serious skiers are there for one reason, to plunder the legendary Alta powder.

The Finest of Colorado By Gina Woodward COLORADO is renowned for snow, is the home of Vail Resorts and in that state alone the Epic Australia Pass offers you unlimited access to Breckenridge, Keystone and Crested Butte resorts, plus ten days combined at Vail and Beaver Creek (and Whistler) with holiday restrictions applying. Telluride Ski Resort has also joined Epic Pass under a long-term alliance and passholders get seven days of skiing or snowboarding with no blackouts. These Colorado mountain destinations are well serviced by various transport options so getting there is the easy part. Deciding which mountains to hit up is the hard choice, but with Epic you can take your pick and ski or ride them all! Denver is the main air hub with shuttles, transfers or car rental an option to get up into the mountains where you’ll find the epic pass resorts of Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone. A bigger road trip south will get you to even more Epic Pass options to Crested Butte then Telluride,

although direct flights from San Francisco or LA are available to Montrose-Telluride Airport servicing both those resorts. Why go to Colorado to ski? You’re in the Rocky Mountains, heartland of skiing and riding with often great snowfalls, sunny days and literally mountains of options depending on the weather, time of year, other activities you want to try out and what terrain takes your fancy. Vail: This year sees investment by Vail in North America’s largest snowmaking enhancement project allowing the resort to open more areas earlier and for longer. The resort is huge, with 5289 skiable acres and happily boasts 300+ days of sunshine per season. The extensive village, activities, festivals, and a range of accommodations to suit everyone means that families making the most of snowsports lessons, or the more advanced hitting the Vail back bowls will be happy here too. Beaver Creek: One always feels a touch of class at beautiful Beaver Creek. With stunning dining options such as the wine dinners at Allie’s Cabin or the lobster taco at Spruce Saddle, the luxury of magic carpets and escalators for foot passengers, plus treats such as hot baked cookies served at the top of the lift daily at 3pm, this resort offers an unparalleled level of guest service at every turn. Across 1800 skiable acres, there is terrain to suit everyone. The kids snowsports is a fantastic learning facility and there are three distinct base areas to explore. Breckenridge: Back towards Denver you’ll find Breckenridge - a resort that encompasses five mountain peaks and has a vibe to match that mountain high. It’s a real town, it’s colourful, fun and has an incredible range of facilities, events and activities to entertain you almost 24/7. With 2908 acres to ski and 40% of that terrain in the high alpine area, their 34 lifts will have you moving across 1400 groomed trails, four terrain parks and a superpipe in

no time. Keystone: If you’re heading to Vail and Beaver Creek from Denver, stop at Keystone on the way where there is another 3000 acres to ski and ride. Plus the 60 acre terrain park, the A51 wins awards each year. Almost half of the mountain is noted as advanced terrain, and their cat skiing tours take you to another 800 acres of delicious powder bowls and tree skiing. Snowcats, sleigh rides, tubing and ice skating on Keystone lake are all fun options too. Crested Butte: With a rich history, literally, of coal and silver mines, this is a fascinating destination with some serious skiing opportunities to explore. At 2715m in town, rising to the top elevation of 3710m, the resort covers 1167 acres. Uley’s Sleigh Ride Dinner is a fine dining experience not to be missed, whilst first tracks or the renowned CB Steep Guides program is a great way to discover the terrain this mountain is famous for. This unique resort offers wide open green and blue groomed trails, through to advanced cruisers and the legendary North Face and Headwall for pushing extreme limits. Telluride: This high altitude adventure playground is fun for everyone. It has a beautiful mountain village and stunning views of the San Juan Mountain Range.

Guests access the resort via a gondola that lands you at 3212 metres to start your day on snow. The longest run on the mountain is Galloping Goose, a thigh burning 7.4km. With an annual snowfall of more than 7 metres, visitors enjoy more than 2000 acres and 17 lifts, including two gondolas. If Colorado is calling you and your Epic Australia Pass is itching for a few more scans, take advantage of the load of preseason deals that include accommodation, lessons, transfers and more. The more you pre-plan and pay ahead, the more you’ll save. It’s hassle free and ensures a smoother holiday, especially when travelling as a group or with family. across the six days of the tournament, with $1000 secret weight prizes daily for both brown trout and rainbow trout. Not that the wily angler needed any encouragement to catch fish, but if you can pocket some handy cash on the side it is happy days on the lakes and rivers. The festival is open to anyone who can throw in a line, or if you just want to register without too much fishing involved, you can still go into the draw to win the $10,000 boat, trailer and motor first prize in the raffle. A fishing kayak and car fridge are other major prizes. All up there is a prize kitty of over $30,000. Participants register at their desired weigh in station, with different categories to enter, plus kids’ categories. Entrants then weigh in fish each day at their weigh in stations. The majority of participants fish Lake Jindabyne and Lake Eucumbene, plus the rivers and streams. Each year the fishing faithful return for what has become a tradition for most, with many having competed in most of the 45 previous years. Snowy Mountains Trout Festival President Richard Burton said it was great
to see so many anglers supporting not only the festival, but the region for their fishing exploits. “As a non profit committee we are always grateful for the fishing communities support, and we would like them all to encourage their friends and introduce new people to the festival,” said Richard. “It has been a great competition over the past 45 years, and the committee are really looking forward to the 50th already, and what we can do to celebrate that as a bigger occasion.” Richard also mentioned that will big snowfalls this winter and the expected spring snow melt, that the fishing should be good on rising water. “We hope the fish get excited as the lake levels rise over new ground, that will be

Big Fish in Lakes this Spring

LURE: A ďŹ ne catch in Lake Jindabyne.
Lakeside Fishing Report By Brian Burns LAKE ďŹ shing in spring can be quite productive. Lake water surface temperature is usually below 10 deg C. Either trolling early and late in the day with 3-4 colours of lead line or walking and spinning from the banks with deeper diving lures around rocky points and structure can produce catches of brown and rainbow trout. Bait ďŹ shing with worms, bardi grubs, or powerbait can also produce ďŹ sh all day. Keep your ďŹ shing rigs light, just enough weight for casting and you don’t need to cast out very far as the ďŹ sh can be feeding in close to the banks around weed beds and rocky structure. Fishing a worm under a oat can be a good method in snaggy areas around the lake edge. There are many easy access locations around the lake, Curiosity Rocks inlet, Curiosity Rocks point, Hatchery Bay, the Clay Pits foreshore where the old clay excavation area provides a deep water edge that can hold feeding ďŹ sh. The lures that have been working recently are gold coloured Tassies and Atomic minnows, any lure that imitates a
Jindabyne GoldďŹ sh is a good choice at as the trout feed on them. A weighted casting y in the goldďŹ sh pattern is also a great choice, you ďŹ sh the weighted casting y with your spinning rod, they land soft on the water and are less likely to “spookâ€? the ďŹ sh, let the lure sink and then work it through the water column, pausing and retrieving all the way to the bank. It can be fun and good exercise to walk and spin ďŹ sh the lake edges or just set up a bait rod and take in the spring sunshine. We have everything you will need in the shop for sale and hire at the Snowline Centre, just past the Thredbo turnoff.
GOOD news for ďŹ sherman this spring is Gaden Trout Hatchery staff have been releasing large ďŹ sh into local lakes. In late August 150 ex brood stock rainbow trout were released into Lake Eucumbene, up to 12 pound in size, plus 130 ex brood stock rainbow up to 10 pound Lake Jindabyne. The ďŹ sh have been tagged are not eligible for weigh in at the upcoming Snowy Mountains Trout Festival. In addition, Lake Williams in Nimmitabel has had 30 ex brood stock rainbow trout released. Gaden Trout Hatchery are also discussing with the Department of Fisheries and Industry about upgrades to the premises, which would result in the hatchery capable to stock more, and bigger ďŹ sh into the surround waterways. In separate discussions, Snowy Hydro and the Monaro Acclimatisation Society issued a joint statement in August. Snowy Hydro said they continue to work closely with the recreational
ďŹ shing community to minimise issues associated with the possible transfer of redďŹ n perch between reservoirs by the Snowy 2.0 pumped-hydro project. Both parties have agreed to work together to look at practical ways to safeguard the trout ďŹ shery at Tantangara Reservoir, in response to concerns about the potential movement of redďŹ n from Talbingo Reservoir to Tantangara should the ďŹ sh or larvae survive the trip through the power station’s turbines and 27km of high pressure waterway tunnels. One of the practical ideas being considered between Snowy Hydro and the Monaro Acclimatisation Society is for some kind of trout grow-out activity. There is evidence elsewhere that growing trout out to a bigger size allows them to withstand attack from redďŹ n. A trout grow-out means the reservoirs can continue to provide a good ďŹ shing experience despite redďŹ n incursion and would help restock the lakes.
