Spring in farm sales FARM sales in the Southern Farmer region showed life in the prime spring-early summer selling season in 2013 compared with the same period in 2012, according to estate agents. Geelong agent Michael Stewart said there was no doubt that demand for farms was stronger. “Lifestyle farms are ticking over well and there has been increased demand for cropping country and more life in grazing farm demand, too,â€? the Charles Stewart and Company agent said. Mr Stewart said the 2012 drought through much of the Western District had greatly restricted demand well into 2013, but in spring the ďŹ rm had sold a good number of all types of farms. “There is certainly no boom because we are coming off a low base,â€? he said. But Mr Stewart had seen strong enquiry from overseas interests ranging from Malaysia, SingaS REDUCE SE OU GREENH SION IS GAS EM
pore, and China to New Zealand, Ireland and the United Kingdom. Warragul agent Bruno Persico, of Alex Scott and Staff, said that Gippsland’s farm market was starting to move but was still tough. “Most of the listings we made in 2013 are still sitting there, he told Southern Farmer. “For a while we had people buying farms who just wanted to park their money but that market has dried up totally. One sale Mr Persico noted was a 60-hectare property at Drouin South sold to a dairy farmer for $1.4m – realising the equivalent of $23,300 per ha. He also had an 80ha dairy farm on his books for $1.8m. Mr Persico suggested that this latter farm was an option for an existing dairy farmer because of its 100cow carrying capacity. While $18,500 to $21,000 per ha was realistically achievable for properties with few improvements, Mr Persico

was conďŹ dent a 39ha farm at well-held Ellinbank, south of Warragul, would achieve around $25,000 per ha. “The property was inherited and the owner has spent the last ďŹ ve years re-fencing the farm and renovating the house,â€? Mr Persico said. Nick Myer from Elders in Melbourne said that there were increasing signs of optimism in the rural property market. Buyer conďŹ dence had returned significantly since late spring last year. “The level of enquiry has certainly improved in this period compared with the previous year,â€? Mr Myer said. Mr Myer said enquiry for rural lifestyle properties had picked up in all areas in Victoria’s south. At the same time interest in commercial-scale farms remained reasonably stable. But there was clear scope for an expansion in interest given Australian agriculture’s and horticulture’s potential in improving Asia’s food security.
CRACK HEIFER BRINGS HOME DAIRY WEEK TRICOLOR
BLIGHTY (NSW) Holstein breeder Meg Campbell (above right) was shy of presenting her cattle at last month’s International Dairy Week national youth show in Tatura until a telephone call from Cardinia-based fellow breeder John Gairdiner in December convinced her otherwise. It was a change-of-heart that brought the eye of Girgarre Jersey breeder and show judge Pat Nicholson (centre) to Meg’s heifer, Avonlea Crackholm Dorinda-IMP-ET, at Tatura showgrounds on January 20 – and show grand championship honors. Meg and her cattle competed against 190 entries in the ABS Australia/Ridley Dairy Feeds' All Breeds national show. The 17-year-old works full-time on her family's 300-cow southern Riverina farm and has pursued her interest in dairying from the age of 14 when she bought five frozen embryos from Canada. Kialla's Emma Castle (left) took home the reserve grand championship ribbon also with a Holstein heifer, Carisa Sanchez Piper.

Holsteins hold the high ground Daughter joins dairy enterprise By DAVID PALMER
ate a top notch dairy farm. Nicole moved in year 10 to Leongatha High School so that she could enrol in its agriculture course, which she topped in years 11 and 12. She then studied for a diploma in agriculture at Warragul TAFE and had a number of dairy farm work placements. As with any livestock enterprise, breeding and feeding go hand in hand. Like most dairy herds, 98 per cent of the Harveys’ calves are AI-bred Holsteins. For some reason in the last couple of years they seemed to be getting less heifers from standard semen. “So we were going to try sex-selected semen this year until I read a couple of articles about poor conception rates,” Mr Harvey said. “If you get 50 per cent you are doing pretty well, apparently.” Currently the Harveys’ cows are in calf to four sires which the father and daughter management team has determined will suit them best.

POOWONG couple Neil and Linda Harvey are clearly delighted that their daughter Nicole is determined not just to carry on but to take the family’s dairy herd to the next level as a Holstein stud. The Harveys currently milk about 100 Holsteins on their 75-hectare (185 acre) Settlement Road dairy farm. The herd is in the top 10 per cent of Holstein herds in Australia for the Australian Selection Index (ASI) so Neil Harvey reckons “we must be doing something right”. The Harveys formed Harvey Hill Holsteins as a partnership last season and bought a 45ha neighboring farm to enable Nicole to carry on dairying on a bigger scale when they retire. “If you don’t help the young they will not get anywhere much,” Mr Harvey said. “In the past 12 to 15 years it has become virtually impossible for young people to break into the dairy industry. “You have to have some family backing to get started.” Three years ago Nicole married Mark Gurney who is responsible for half of Victoria as area manager for Kubota Tractors. Two years ago the farm next door came on the market with the Harveys given the first opportunity to buy it. One of the children of the late neighbors told Mr Harvey that their mother had said that the Harveys should be given first offer if ever the farm was to be sold.
“That was lovely,” Mr Harvey said. Married three years next month, the Gurneys now live on the new farm and have a daughter who is almost one. Because it was leased, the property had run down but they plan to increase the herd size from the current 100 or so. The farm has a separate 4ha title and a planning permit to build a house so the family is hoping to reduce debt by selling the small block. “It has a creek running through it and hopefully it will appeal to someone,” Mrs Harvey said. Mr Harvey said the 40ha minimum for a building permit was unfortunate and particularly for those people who had bought 8-12ha blocks as retirement farms and had never secured a building permit. Mrs Harvey’s parents bought their Settlement Road farm in 1948 and she and Mr Harvey bought it from them in 1980, two years after they married. They are clearly delighted that 26-year-old Nicole wants to follow in their footsteps and oper-

Mindsets shape dairy direction THE past year was a sobering one for people in dairying and businesses serving the dairy industry. A late but very beneficial spring, a higher milk price and a forecast of summer rain have turned the tables. However, many farms
carry a significant financial liability from the past 12 months. The violent volatility in our industry is relatively new, but predicted to become the ‘norm’. Clearly the general mode of operation from previous prosperity and
stability does not fit this volatility. Mindsets vary – and dramatically. Over the years I’ve observed that successful people are those who focus on the things they recognise as limitations, or bottlenecks to farm

We lag dramatically in production per cow (dilution of fixed costs) against our northern hemisphere colleagues. Mike Hutjens, professor emeritus of animal science at the University of Illinios, and visitor to Australia in 2013, has listed a number of issues and their impact on dairy business viability. None of them are new, however, it is time we reviewed these limitations/ bottlenecks and set some goals for improvement. Number 1: Milk production per cow (litres drive profit). 1kg DM feed produces 2+ litres after maintenance has been met. Higher feed intake equates to higher profit. At 20c/kg DM average over the ration, we produce (at current milk price) 80 cents of milk
income – 400 per cent return. Number 2: Optimum milk solids. Energy density/intake is the main driver of MP per cent, minimising negative energy balance/ body fat mobilisation. We have experienced good support to BF percentage using lower micron limestone this year, increasing income per cow by up to 50c/day. Perhaps a significant factor in both solids tests is rumen pH stability. We developed a new yeast-based feed additive through trial work in 2012 that impacts this, feed efficiency and fertility. Number 3: Feed efficiency. This is highly correlated to total feed intake – dilution of fixed maintenance energy cost. We run a calculator on our monthly ration analysis. It is simply litres divided by kilograms of DM intake. Our goal is 1.6 to 1.7 depending on herd stage of lactation. This figure is directly related to milk income over feed cost (profit). See #1, and December’s article. Number 4: Fertility. In a study cited in January’s
article, fertility was #1 in the separation in profitability between farms in a study that has recorded data for over 20 years on a large number of farms. Figures cited are $2/day for cows open beyond 120 days-in-milk. This cost can blowout to $5 to $7/day as days open elevate. The negative impact of poor fertility is due to low feed conversion efficiency as a result of longer daysin-milk. Seasonal calving herds highlight this; high production and feed efficiency during low days-in-milk. Sale of excess livestock also impacts total farm income. Number 5: Calf rearing programs. Heifer calves should double their birth weight by weaning. They need two per cent of body weight as milk solids. Higher milk solids intakes delay grain intakes and weaning. Calves weaned early due to rapidly achieving double birth weight, reduce rearing costs, produce 500+ litres more in lactation and have improved immunity. Continued page 7

Farmer flags hopes enza outbreaks were in intensive housing systems operated by big producers. “The last two outbreaks in 2012 and 2013 were in very large ‘free range’ flocks so the risks of avian influenza on free range farms should be discussed in the context of the size of the flock and the stocking density.” Despite claims to the contrary by vested interests, the model code of practice for the Welfare of Animals – Domestic Poultry, does impose a maximum outdoor stocking density of 1500 hens per hectare on free range egg farms. “Higher densities referred to in the appendix relate only to chickens raised for meat.”
garnered most attention. The International Year of Family Farming aims to stimulate policies for the sustainable development of family farms, communal units and cooperatives. Mr Westwood said one example of the problems generated by the dominance of corporate farming was the vulnerability of egg farms to outbreaks of avian influenza, or bird flu. “Statements by politicians and others about the outbreaks were factually incorrect,” Mr Westwood said. “A comparative analysis on the number of avian influenza outbreaks in Australia between 1976 and 2013 demonstrates that most avian influ-
FARMERS hope that government and consumers will recognise the benefits that agriculture provides to the nation and the community, says Grantville farmer and Freeranger Eggs’ Phil Westwood. The United Nations has called 2014 the International Year of Family Farming. The UN says that family farms are important for sustainable food production and the achievement of food security. Mr Westwood said that farmers across Australia would show politicians in Canberra and in all state parliaments that family farms were a greater benefit to the country than corporate giants which usually

Number 6: Age at first calving. 23 to 24 months is essential for economic reasons. Beyond this age feed costs can blowout by up to $2/day, and no return on investment in heifers. Number 7: Feed additives. This is an area Mike Hutjens spoke on during his Australian visit last year. His list is common in our industry:Rumensin, yeast products, silage inoculants, macro and trace minerals, rumen buffers and biotin. We use and recommend all the above.
The economic responses are well documented, but frequently are only seen as “costs”. Number 8: Optimum mineral nutrition. Like the above, macro and trace minerals are essential for health and production. This includes growing heifers and dry cows. There is a growing body of research, particularly highlighting the needs of these two groups, for mineral nutrition correlating it to whole-of-life production/profit. Number 9: Lameness. The two major causes in our system are rumen pH and hoof nutrition.
I mentioned rumen pH in #2, our new yeast-based feed additive. We run biotin in all our premixes with many years of supportive evidence on its benefit to lameness. This list of course contains nothing new. However, there is room for increased profit on most farms through identifying ‘bottlenecks’ and focusing on improvement.

using’. But the pair will not commit to the long-term use of a new sire until they see his progeny. “I don’t want to knock genetics representatives but they know damn well not to come in and tell me what bulls to use because some reps are only there to sell you the bulls that they will make the most money from, Mr Harvey said. From the current offering Mr Harvey said that Buddha – or Bushlea Perfector Bold-etto, to give him his full name, from Genetics Australia – showed potential. “As well there is a young genomic bull that Nicole is trying out this year, Mr Harvey said. Some of the best bulls the family has used for breeding were from the Southwind line. Mr Harvey said he had tried two Canadian bulls not only without success but with potentially poor managerial outcomes for the herd. “The first Canadian bull would kick your head off given half a chance and then the second pro-
duced really big calves, Mr Harvey said. “I’ve never seen calves so big and I remember one weighed 83 kilograms at three days old. “The cow calved alright by herself but never got in calf again. Mr Harvey said that it did not matter how good the sires – it was important to see how progeny performed under Australian conditions. In South Gippsland that often means dealing with rain coming horizontally across the hills, Mr Harvey said. With 1150 to 1250 millimetres of annual rainfall in the region quite a lot of it takes that trajectory. But with two or three in the herd aged 12 years old or more and quite a few others close to reaching their teens, the herd’s survival skills are of the top order. In an on-farm Holstein challenge run in conjunction with the Bass Coast summer show at Wonthaggi a few years ago the Harveys won champion female with a 12-year-old cow and
several ďŹ rsts and seconds as well in a ďŹ eld of about 120. The top cow, Winnie, went in the joints shortly afterwards. “We originally said she’d die on the property, but eventually you have to be cruel to be kind and we shipped her off,â€? Mr Harvey said. Nicole took over rearing the calves in 2013 – there were 70 last year - which used to be Mrs Harvey’s job. Apart from replacements for the herd, surplus heifers will be available for the export market and a few of the bigger bull calves were steered and will be grown out. At the end of January, Mr and Mrs Harvey were due to visit India for a few weeks (see page 9), leaving Nicole and husband Mark to milk the herd and look after the farm. Nicole has run the farm before but only when the herd has been dried off. “This time it will give her a good feel for full on dairying,â€? Mr Harvey said.

DECISIONS made while building, extending or renovating today go well beyond what color to paint the walls. In view of climate change and growing energy costs we are now looking for energy efficient ways in which to build and ultimately run our homes. The GOTAFE Building Lecture Program at this year’s Seymour Alternative Farming Expo will
explore sustainable building options and promote products for the energy conscious. Building practices once considered alternative are becoming increasingly mainstream and the daily speaker program promotes innovative ways to benefit the environment as well as the hip pocket. Owner builders will be offered
tips and tricks on how to build in fire prone areas and be stepped through what is involved in obtaining building permits and settling building disputes. Presentations centred on energy efficient windows, solar hot water and electricity, and waste water systems will all feature during the three-day program, providing something for everyone.
The GOTAFE Building Lectures will run from 10am to 4pm each day of the Expo at site 348. Please note that the GOTAFE Building Lectures program is subject to change. For current program information go to www.seymour-expo.com or www.gotafe.vic.edu.au.

Alternative farming expo is set to shine
FARMING SHOWCASE: Seymour Alternative Farming Expo organisers Colin and Bev Stray believe a great day out will be had by all those who attend this year’s expo. are on hand each day and more than willing to help visitors with any information they might need particularly if they’re considering starting up a livestock enterprise,” Mr Stray said. Two breeds of cattle will make their expo debut this year - the Texas Longhorns exhibited by Don Constable and Julie Brown, and the Nargun Den stud’s Speckle Park cattle. A special attraction for the 2014 expo will be the Keilor Obedience Dog Training Centre’s fly ball competition which will take place at the main arena on Saturday, February 15. The Australian Miniature Horse Society will strut their stuff before the judges in a range of competitive events on Sunday, February 16. For those expo visitors who own or are contemplating the
purchase of a small holding and wanting to start a new or different farming enterprise, the expo’s Ag Hub is where they will find all the answers. Within this precinct patrons can sit in on the Farm and Rural Lifestyle seminars where industry experts will cover topics ranging from compost to livestock selection; from permaculture to the keeping of geese, bees and pigs. Running parallel with the seminars will be the Seymour Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s practical workshops featuring talks and demonstrations on cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry and alpacas. The educational focus of the expo also embraces the GO TAFE building lecture program that will highlight new and innovative building techniques and products
applicable to home and farm. Complementing the agricultural and educational elements, the expo also shines a spotlight on rural lifestyle through its offering of fine local produce and wines, an outstanding selection of food from no less than three food courts, and a fascinating expose of country crafts. The food theme is carried through to the Butcher Shop and Country Kitchen. Expo patrons can see top butchers at work breaking down carcases, creating and advising on the best cuts of meat and watch local chefs prepare a smorgasbord of mouthwatering dishes. The CraftAlive exhibit features a raft of hobbyists and craftspeople that will demonstrate and display everything from needlework, patchwork and quilting to cupcakes, jewellery and home wares.

AUSTRALIA’S premier alternative farming showcase will get under way on Friday, February 14. During the three days of the 2014 Seymour Alternative Farming Expo, about 45,000 visitors are expected to pass through the turnstiles to experience the latest in agricultural technology and the best in rural lifestyle. About 500 companies, organisations and individuals will be on site to promote their products and services. According to expo director, Colin Stray, the event is to some extent reflective of some of the challenges faced by agriculture in Australia today. “Our farmers are among the world’s best,” Mr Stray said. “They have to be because of the tough conditions they deal with day in day out. “Their uptake of the latest technology is very high and there are key elements of this technology, particularly in the area of machinery and implements that we have on display at the Expo,” he said. The collection of the latest small-to-medium sized farm machinery and implements – tractors, quad bikes, trailers, slashers and more, will resemble a huge outdoor showroom across the expo site. Mr Stray said that livestock is a major attraction with the expo focusing on some of the more alternative breeds in cattle, sheep, goats and poultry. “Breeders and owners

It’s A Trap is making feral headway IT’S A Trap carries a range of traps for feral animals so that ongoing headway can be made against feral animals all over the country. The retailer’s principal Robin Wawn said the feral management battle must largely be fought property-by-property. To that end, It’s A Trap will be at the Seymour Expo on stand G3 near gate three at the Edward Street entrance. On display will be traps, deterrents and lures to reduce pest animal problems.
“The alternative of no action means being over-run, Ms Wawn said. “When enough individuals take action, serious headway against feral animals can be made. “The people of Canberra have virtually eradicated the Indian Myna. “They took action of mass trapping of this murderous pest with around 40,000 euthanased to date. “They bought their Myna traps and neighbour by neighbour, collectively wiped out these ferals.
“Native birds then returned to trees and nesting hollows, she said. Like Canberrans, Landcare groups get it with many running feral animal trapping programs. “But Australia excels at native animal extinctions, Ms Wawn said. “The once-widespread barred bandicoot’s national population fell to 40 animals thanks to introduced foxes and cats, before a last-second captive protective breeding program began. “So a lot more people have to

get it and take action; the scale and immense damage to native animal populations by 20m killer feral cats across Australia, each eating six to ten native birds and animals daily is immense, she said. Even more native animals are taken by pet cats whose owners let them roam at night and millions of foxes are brazenly preying on wildlife and vulnerable livestock. For more information visit www. Recharge keeps deep cycle batteries going for years bought Recharge to maintain serious banks of batteries, storing power from off grid alternative generating systems like wind turbines, photovoltaic cells and diesel generators. “We get the best results with those big deep cycle lighting batteries because they are particularly good batteries with good lead in them, Mr Anselmi said. He said a two litre container of Recharge is about right for operators of most lighting systems and they will be on special at the Seymour Expo for $230. “Normally they cost $380 each
off the website, he said. Mr Anselmi said sulphation was a major problem with leadacid batteries. “All batteries sulphate. “You buy them with sulphation and they only get worse until they die. “But Recharge will dissolve those sulphur ions back into the electrolyte so they hold a charge again. “The battery regains its capacity, corrosion of lead plates is stopped and battery life is significantly increased in most cases, he said. For more information visit www.recharge.net.nz.

RECHARGE, a life enhancer for all lead acid batteries, has extended battery life for a Queensland farmer’s vehicle batteries by up to eight years. Recharge Battery Revitalizer’s Gerard Anselmi, who will be at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo again this year on site 13, said that Claremont farmer Shane Perry reported that most of his Recharge treated batteries had lasted between four and six years. And on one of his bulldozers the battery was still performing well after eight years. Mr Anselmi said many customers at Seymour each year

BUY from someone you know and buy local is the motto of Riverina Poly owner Phil Penhall. Riverina Poly is a NSW/Victorian border-based company that provides quality polyethylene water tanks that can stand up to the harsh Australian conditions. Specialising in the manufacture of 22,500 litre (5000 gallon) tanks made at the company’s state-ofthe-art manufacturing facility in Corowa, Mr Penhall said Riverina Poly tanks are thicker at the base because the pressure at the bottom of the tank is greater. “With my experience in plumbing and water storage tanks, I believe you cannot go

Hi Water Concrete Tanks built for longevity

STEVE Miller knows his tanks and takes great pride in his work. This is not surprising seeing he has been building them for 37 years while owning and managing his Wodonga-based business, Hi Water Concrete Tanks, for the past 20 years. And he said unless you are building or using concrete tanks, you are wasting your time and money. “With just about any other material sunlight is a killer, for drinking temperatures, water quality and tank longevity,” Mr Miller said. “Concrete tanks are there for a lifetime providing fresh cool water. “Plastic tanks don’t insulate against heat and light allowing

bacteria and algae growth to contaminate your precious water supply. “This will not happen with a concrete tank. “Concrete tanks will survive a bushfire, not like plastic and metal tanks as seen in recent bushfire news footage,” he said. Hi Water Concrete Tanks are available in a variety of sizes ranging from 22,500 litres to 118,000 litres and are available for in-ground or above ground applications, with either concrete tops, silo roofs or open tops. “Our tanks are suited to industrial, rural and residential applications, for example hobby farms, water storage, cellars, shelters, water conservation,
milk chilling, water treatment, fire fighting, security and many other applications,” Mr Miller said. “And all Hi Water tanks are made using the highest quality materials, exceeding the requirements of Australian standards.” The company also undertakes tank repairs and is always available to give quotes, and are willing to travel all over Victoria and New South Wales. For every concrete tank ordered at the Seymour Expo, Hi Water Tanks will give you a Hi-Jet submersible or above ground pump valued at $1200. For more information visit www. hiwater.com.au.
Big pole and wire bill prompted move to solar A QUOTE of $17,000 to supply electricity to the middle of his two kilometre long farm, ‘Equidistant’ between Colac, Cobden and Camperdown, prompted Robert Armitt to investigate less expensive options. That led him to investigate solar panel powered pump sets in the $6000 to $10,000 range in China. Mr Armitt said that less than half a decade later, they are much cheaper again and he will be displaying Sunstream Solar Pumps in the $2000
to $5000 range at this year’s Seymour Expo on site 225. The demonstration unit will be operating in a section of bore casing. Mr Armitt said he sold two basic types - centrifugal pumps moving 50,000 litres per day against a five metre head and screw pumps operating from a 100 metre head and lifting 10,000 litres per day. “As well, I’m hoping to get hold of another screw type operating to a head of 150 metres,” Mr Armitt said. “One screw model with a 60 metre head capability and 10,000 litres per
day capacity is proving popular as a trouble-free replacement for windmills. “Occupational Health and Safety concerns with farmers or plumbers servicing windmill towers about 30 metres high has made their retention much more problematic,” he said. He added that the availability and cost of spares was a hindrance to them continuing in service. Mr Armitt said the smallest in the Sunstream range, producing 5000 litres per day, required one standard panel of 250 watts - the equivalent of six horsepower. The Chinese-made pumps come with a two-
year guarantee, but Mr Armitt added that he has had his running without any problems for the past three years. The solar panels are guaranteed to still produce 90 per cent of their power output after 10 years and 85 per cent after 20 years. A new item Mr Armitt will display at Seymour is the Ezview tank level indicator. Made in Ballarat where Mr Armitt runs his business, the external part of the indicator goes down level with the float inside the tank. For more information visit wwwinfo@ sunstreampumps.com.au.

EDUCATION and the free exchange of ideas and experiences have been cornerstones of the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo since its inception over two decades ago. In 2014 this knowledge interchange will be exemplified by the Farm and Rural Lifestyle seminar program and the Seymour Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s practical workshop sessions that have been scheduled on each day of the event. The Farm and Rural Lifestyle seminar program has been designed to attract expo patrons who have an interest in new and different livestock enterprises, soil health, farming sustainability, permaculture and machinery purchase options for their holdings. New to the program this year are a number of open forums and panel discussions that have been included to heighten audience involvement and interaction with the various industry experts including: z Compost forum – a panel of three representatives from the composting industry will provide an overview of their respective

Harlequin minis on display ONE of the first breeders to take the plunge into Harlequin mini meat sheep will have them on display at this year’s Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Sandy Simpkins, stud owner of Mulcra Downs Stud in Murrayville is breeding the Harlequin Minis that have been developed as a result of a miniature gene discovered in South African Persian sheep that were imported into Australia in 2000 and mated to a White Dorper hybrid ram. The resulting progeny was half size sheep that are polled with a variety of colors. Several different bloodlines have been used to maintain genetic diversity and in 2012 there were three separate lines of Minis within the Genelink breeding group. According to Dennis Russell from Genelink who works with Ms Simpkins with the Minis “swapping rams, the White Dorper influence
has given a good muscling on a small sheep that can produce lamb carcasses of 18 kilograms (kg) in about five months. “The Minis are also clean shedding with no shearing or crutching required, Mr Russell said. “Most grow a type of short wool or down in winter and shed it in spring. “They have a good temperament and they respond to a little hand feeding, he said. Small groups from the source flock are now in Victoria, NSW, Western Australia and Queensland, with inquiries coming from small farm owners and organic vineyards. Mini sheep are not currently registered with a breed society, pedigree tracked or recorded. “We recommend that purchasers of our sheep begin the process of pedigree recording for future use, as a breed society will be organised when flock numbers reach critical
mass, Mr Russell said. Ms Simpkins said that ewes are able to breed all year round and can have up to two pregnancies per year. “Growth is also quite good – at about 40kg - and will fit into the light trade lamb category at about 18kg to 20kg, Ms Simpkins said. “All our wether lambs not used for the sale table have been included in shipments of Dorper cross lambs to the works and have made the same grid prices as the others. “They also have great potential for private sales as lawn mowers, for meat and spit lambs, she said. She added that the Minis are easy to handle, which is ideal for hobby farmers and sheep enthusiasts, low maintenance and produce the same amount of meat, or more, per hectare as other lamb breeds. THE timber craftsmen at Envisage Furniture boast that they custom make furniture for people who appreciate quality craftsmanship with the natural beauty and warmth only found in timber. The founders of Shepparton-based Envisage Furniture, Mathew Irwin and Chris Willis, are two very talented timber craftsmen who put all their creative energy and passion for quality, handcrafted timber furniture into every piece they create. “Our passion and creative energy is embedded in the cabinet making and joinery practices of the past and present, Mr Willis said. “We have an in-depth knowledge of the timber working industry, so we are able to use the best structural joints in each piece of furniture to create not only a beautiful piece of timber furniture, but a structural piece of furniture that will last for generations. The company design and create custom made timber furniture from solid timbers in the Goulburn Valley and also source a wide range of timbers from Australia and overseas to capture the “right look for their customers. They also personally deliver to Victoria and some areas of NSW or they will arrange freight for other areas. “Our team of professional craftsmen sit
down and design each piece, Mr Willis said. “The design process can work in a few different ways. “The most efficient is being able to talk to you in person. “One of our team can sit down with you and design your piece of furniture based on the size and style you have in mind. “Within our showroom, we have a range of beautiful furniture along with numerous photos of pieces we have created in the past, these can help you get those ideas flowing and it also shows what is possible. “We can also work with your design, he said. The range of timber products the team at Envisage Furniture have produced has grown over the years and continues to grow from tables to chairs, to feature walls and restoration pieces, with some of their work on display at this year’s Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. “Our goal is to produce uniquely individual pieces of furniture, introducing the natural beauty of solid timber into the modern environment, Mr Willis said. “We pride ourselves on our customer service and work hard to achieve the highest goals. For more information visit www.envisagefurniture.com.au.

Heritage Tanks on display at expo
t/05d06925/06-14
ANOTHER year has flown by with everything gearing up for another fantastic range of displays at the 2014 Seymour Expo of which Heritage Tanks are a proud sponsor. The expo offers you the opportunity to assess Heritage Tanks from the inside out. The sales people will be there to assist with information on what tank will best suit your needs from: ‡ HVWDEOLVKLQJ WKH DPRXQW RI water you can capture ‡ ZKDW RSWLRQDO H[WUDV \RX ZLOO need for your application ‡ HVWDEOLVKLQJ \RXU ZDWHU XVDJH
Heritage Tanks offer a range of optional extras including the only true gutter for their tanks. This gutter enables up to 100 per cent of the water off the tank’s own roof to be collected, minimising erosion from water runoff. In basic terms, in a 500 millimetre rainfall area you can save about a quarter of the capacity from the company’s 2.3 metre range of tanks. That could be at least a truckload of water saved extra to get through the drier months. Heritage Tanks will be at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo

displaying their tanks for those looking to secure their own water supply. David and Helen Kennett of Pinjarra Alpaca Stud visited the Heritage Tanks site at last year’s expo after having previously purchased two 110,000 litre Heritage water tanks for their Strathbogie property. After a wet winter came a summer of almost no rain, which nearly depleted their supply through stock and domestic use. They knew they needed to add more storage to ‘drought proof’ their property so they added a third storage tank from Heritage Tanks.
Heritage Tanks is a manufacturer of rural, domestic and commercial rainwater tanks that can help with increasing your water storage for future events of prolonged dry spells to sustain your family and/or livelihoods. You can save and store ‘overflowing’ winter rain for fire events, or to reuse in manufacturing or for crop preparation, such as spraying. Heritage Tanks can provide 55,000 litres to 375,000 litre tanks for domestic use. For more information visit www. heritagetanks.com.au or phone 1800 115 552.

to join forces with Branson,” Mr Spring-Brown said. Founded more than 40 years ago, he said Branson Tractors were sold worldwide and were in the same league as world class Korean products such as Samsung/LG phones and televisions and Hyundai/Kia cars. “We are impressed with the build quality and high-end features and they have plenty of weight, which makes them perform very well in practice,” he added.
A comprehensive line-up has models for all kinds of applications. There are 20 kilowatt (kW) manual and hydro transmission models in the 00 series. They are nimble yet capable sub compacts, ideal for smaller lifestyle properties and commercial applications requiring a smaller size such as orchards and vineyards. The 20R series includes versatile compacts ranging from 26 to 41kW.
ROPS models are available in 26kW, 30kW and 41kW configurations and a cabin model develops 40kW. At the top of the range is the 6640C utility tractor that comes standard with cab and a 50kW rating. Mr Spring-Brown said the Branson range has the backing of an industry- leading four-year warranty and nationwide service agents. For more information visit www.midwaysales.com.au.
Whitlands Engineering clocks up 20 years in business FAMILY owned country Victorian company Whitlands Engineering is celebrating its 20th year in business. The company specialises in designing and building domesticsized hydraulic wood splitters and industrial firewood processing machines. But 20 years ago, it started with one machine - the Superaxe. David Burder, chief executive officer and head designer, was chopping 12 tonne of timber to heat his home every season. So he had a go at designing a hydraulic machine. With a background in welding and construction, an eye for good design and a decent amount of

common sense, he designed the first pivoting blade, vertical, hydraulic wood splitter in the country. At that time wood splitters were horizontal and close to the ground, meaning the amount of bending and lifting defeated the purpose of efficient splitting. Mr Burder’s design featured a vertical configuration meaning that the operator could stand up straight while working. An innovative log lifter on the side cut out even more effort. Trialling the first prototype attracted lots of attention from neighbors and family and it wasn’t long before the first order was in. By five years, the business
had taken on its first employees - a bookkeeper, a field day representative and three to help in the workshop. Fifteen years on and those first five employees are still with the company. As the company grew, the laws around farm safety evolved also. The change in WorkCover laws in 2009 forced pivotal changes for wood splitters and Whitlands Engineering introduced a new range of machines in response. The new Aussie Chopper range set the benchmark for safety, efficiency and ease-of-use and was quickly adopted as the machine of choice for hire and rental companies, arborists and
firewood production businesses. Small changes in the Superaxe design further cemented the company as a leader in innovative design. The company has overcome increasing competition from Asian imports, increasing steel prices, drought and the global financial crisis. Every machine is still built from scratch in the Whitlands workshop and shipped directly to the buyer and all machines are still grounded in the company design philosophy: ergonomic, built to last, productive, safe and efficient. we regularly eat from and preserve the extras as much as possible from our own garden. We would never have known that alpaca meat could be eaten (and we would never eat our pet alpaca) but we do eat our home-grown lambs so the butcher shop/cooking demos are a great place to learn new things. Every single item in the trailer prize will be worth more than its dollar value to us; the trailer and crate, the water tank with firefighting pump and hoses, the Stihl products and probably my two favorites, the spot sprayer tank, which is just what I need for the four-wheeler to make my least-favorite but totally necessary dreaded task of killing weeds more pleasurable and my number
one favorite, that log splitter. Our home is heated in winter by a wood heater and our entertaining area has a self-built pizza oven that we fire up every Saturday night so we burn a lot of wood. I was excited to read that CraftAlive would be there as I attended the one held in Shepparton last year and enjoyed that. Being a country-girl at heart, I enjoy crafts and cooking, so there were times during the day when Peter went and looked at some blokey things and I went in search of inspiration at CraftAlive. I always return home from the expo motivated and inspired to try something new, save for something for next year and try something new in the garden (plus I haven’t spent the $20 voucher from the Farm Store yet). It is a credit to the expo staff that it is such a great event to attend. It has a great, friendly atmosphere with vendors all too willing to help those of us who want to get the best of both worlds by enjoying a slower-paced lifestyle when we get home from work. into a small hobby farm and are proud to have a pet alpaca, more than sheep (and have had lambs born each year), chickens, a puppy and we have also fostered a neighbour’s calf. We are also foster carers with Berry Street and have always wanted to share our home, the garden, open space and animals with lots of children and know that it will always give them fond memories to look back on. We are extremely waterwise and water all of our garden by hand (no taps or hoses connected outside) and that includes a huge collection of more than 120 roses plus several fruit trees, table-grape vines and 12 olive trees - all established in the past five years. We have a Mediterranean herb garden and vegetable beds and

while watching the dogs on the oval. It was hot, but those glorious water-misting fans, the pavilions and plenty of spots to stop and rest made for an enjoyable day out in the heat (plus we knew the ice-cream vans would be there). For us, attending the expo is like going to the show as adults, but the showbags are better. Each year we have collected a free native tree or shrub from the Mitchell Shire and planted it onto our property. We make it a day out, not only because we know it is good value, but to specifically seek out specific stall holders for products and information. Two years ago we purchased a chicken tractor at the expo so we could buy some chickens (which we did) and we have had a regular supply of eggs and fertiliser for family and friends ever since. This year we had a shopping list. From the moment we dreamt of building our home, it was always going to be part of a lifestyle property and we wanted a haven from the world of work and rushing. Eight years ago we began to transform 14 acres of dirt paddocks in a dry, but picturesque landscape

DEAR Seymour Alternative Farming Expo organisers and staff We were fortunate enough to win the Weekly Times Expo Trail prize and cannot express in anywhere near enough words just how delighted we are with our prize. It was a perfect end to the weekend after a great day out. We have attended the expo several times and it is always a highlight and big day out for us. Last time we attended we met up with my parents for a barbecue lunch and this year we brought along our foster child (our good luck charm) and enjoyed the exhibits, shady spots under the big trees and ate lunch

Mobile phone gaps sap food growth AGRIBUSINESS Gippsland chairman Paul Ford said Gippsland deserves better mobile phone coverage to fulďŹ l its promise as Australia’s leading food export region. Mr Ford said that the most effective way to boost mobile phone coverage is to concentrate on plugging coverage gaps , or ‘black holes’, in main arterial routes. “Upgrading and extending the existing infrastructure along the Princes, South Gippsland
and Bass highways would give the region a cost-effective communication boost, Mr Ford said. Agribusiness Gippsland has lodged a submission with regional federal parliamentarians following the release of a discussion paper, seeking feedback on regional mobile phone coverage. “We are very aware that many outlying districts of Gippsland do not have strong coverage, which can be a result
of topography, Mr Ford said. “A more immediate improvement to the region’s logistics could be gained by plugging the black holes on the main logistics routes. “This should be addressed as a matter of priority. “Our region is moving to the forefront of the food productivity challenge and it needs clever connectivity to underpin this. Agribusiness currently contributes about $6 billion of Gippsland’s $13b gross re-
gional annual production. The agribusiness sector is a signiďŹ cant employer with 52 per cent of Gippsland’s businesses involved in or supporting agriculture, forestry, ďŹ shing and upstream processing. Mr Ford said that a Gippsland food plan would be launched in March with a focus the region being globally competitive in food exports. “It is essential to have reliable mobile phone coverage to achieve this potential,â€? he said.

RESEARCH has documented a single mediumsized serrated tussock producing up to 80,000 seeds and large plants more than 140,000 seeds per plant per year. Then they can remain viable in the soil for up to 20 years. Seeds can also be blown up to 60km and a 50 per cent infestation is equivalent to a 50 per cent reduction in carrying capacity. Tasmania’s Department of Primary Industries has also suggested that if left unchecked it takes only 12 years for tussock completely to overrun a paddock. Granular Products’ sales manager Hugh Munro says that’s why the control of every serrated tussock counts. Traditional treatment methods have involved heavy spray packs or long and tangled hoses. New GP Flupropanate granular herbicide is a light, easy-to-use and ever-ready control option. Mr McCormick described Knight as a durable and versatile variety for sowing as straight pasture or mixing with clover. “Before sowing an Italian ryegrass this autumn, ask how much winter feed the variety can be expected to generate in your area,â€? he said. “Knight is setting new standards in improving winter grazing opportunities, when every mouthful of feed counts.â€? autumn and winter yields. “This speed of growth also makes it ideal for pasture renovation because it is such an aggressive competitor to weeds.â€? He said home-grown winter feed was often the most valuable feed, as pasture growth rates generally slowed in the cooler conditions and fodder stocks ran low in the lead-up to spring. “Switching to Knight is well worth it, when you consider the additional feed it can produce in winter and the savings it offers by reducing feed bills,â€? he said. Results from 13 trials nationwide between 2008 and 2012, showed Knight produced an additional 844kg DM/ha over the ďŹ rst winter compared with Crusader. “That’s worth up to $253/ha, if it can replace purchases of feed at current prices of around $300/t,â€? he said. Available January 2014, Knight is the latest diploid Italian ryegrass variety from Stephen Pasture Seeds, supplier of the current market leading variety, Crusader. Blair McCormick, of Stephen Pasture Seeds, said it was a tall order to improve on Crusader, but Knight had been selected to replace it because of its rapid establishment capabilities and outstanding autumn and winter yields. “Farmers who are familiar with using Crusader to grow more winter feed, will be pleased to know that Knight has out yielded Crusader on average by 651kgDM/ha, in 13 trials across Australia between 2008 and 2012,â€? he said. “Knight’s quick speed out of the ground means the pasture is up and growing quickly to produce strong

The challenge runs to February 5 and allows studs to display heifers which will feature in their breeding programs. With almost 50 years experience in the livestock agency field, Mr Horne – a respected former stock agent from Dubbo, NSW – brings a broad range of talents to his task. He will determine 10 finalists and from them champion and reserve champion pens of 10 registered heifers born in 2012. The winners will share
$4500 in prize money. The finalists and the championship winners will be announced at a special dinner in Bendigo on February 7. In the first heifer challenge in 2012, the champion was Eloora Shorthorns, Bulart, with Rockwood Charolais from Ladysmith, NSW, reserve champion. Last year the champion was Riga Angus, Mansfield, with the reserve award going to Yavenvale Herefords, Adelong.
Mr Horne started his agency career in 1965 with four years at Melbourne’s Newmarket saleyards and then at Echuca with Younghusband. He then worked with AML, travelling throughout Victoria for 15 years. He moved to Dubbo in 1985 and after 12 months at the Dubbo saleyards he joined Elders’ stud stock team. The period that followed saw dramatic change in the way studs sold cattle.

BULL AND ON-FARM SALES
Southern Farmer, Page 13
Prestige Hereford herd for dispersal By DAVID RIZZOLI ONE of the oldest and most prestigious beef cattle studs in Australia, South Boorook, will after 75 years be dispersed on Friday, February 28. Founded by the late Jim ‘J.R’ Allen south of Mortlake in 1939, South Boorook Hereford stud cattle have exerted a vast influence on the Hereford breed and the Australian beef industry as a whole. The Allen family will now concentrate on commercial beef production. Jim’s son and the stud’s current principal, Peter Allen, said that the sale of 152 females and 35 bulls would give cattle producers a once-in-alifetime opportunity to buy quality seed stock with a background of diligent attention to performance recording for 59 years. Jim Allen was a pioneer in performance recording when in 1958, weights and average daily gains and ratios were listed for each bull, in that year’s sale catalogue. Also in 1958, the stud started recording weaning weights and ratios for all female calves, to aid the selection of replacement heifers. “This,” Mr Allen said, “was in fact selection for milking ability.” Peter Allen says that the installation of state of the art mainframe computers in 1980, on which all performance records are maintained, ensures accuracy and makes better use of figures and remarks collected over 50 years. The computer keeps a record of service and calving dates, calving ease, 200-day ratio, weaning ratio, joined weight and ratio, frame score and ratio, a 20-point character classing form for each animal and group breed

varied and influential clientele who have returned year after year to buy. Leading these is the Galway family, Stuarts Creek, Roma, Queensland, who in over 50 years have purchased around 130 bulls for well over a million dollars, including the top priced bull at most sales. Naturally Victorian stud breeders are well represented too. Tim Hutton, Cheviot Hills, Penshurst, has purchased over 85 bulls since 1989; Donald Calvert, Hopkins Hill, Caramut, 30 since 1991 and Brendan Fitzgerald, Cammais Hereford stud, Casterton, 20 bulls and 19 heifers including one for the $22,000 top price at the 2007 sale. Andrew Kippel, Sugarloaf Creek Hereford stud, has purchased 112 heifers and four bulls and Geoff and Di Notman, Mount Widderin, Skipton, have bought 14 bulls, some of which sired their record breaking weaner calf price of $1012 a head at
Hamilton in 2011. Other notable return buyers in recent years have been Kevin Stark, Bilink Bonnie, Casterton; Booroola Estate, Yea; Onalim Nominees, Hansonville; M.T.Sullivan and Sons and Shallum and Garry Marshall, Jarrawood. From 1978 to 2011, South Boorook spent over $700,000 on new sires. Peter Allen says “apart from being of a standard demanded at South Boorook all these bulls are the longest and tallest to be found in Australia, while maintaining thickness and muscle with good color and hair”. “A bull is not a bull if he can’t look over a gate,” JR once said. South Boorook will disperse 90 four to eight year old cows, 42 three year old heifers, 20 two year old heifers, all PTIC, and 35 bulls on February 28 from 11am. For information call (03) 5599 2092 or 0427 992 082 or email south boorook@bigpond.com.

NATIONALS’ Victorian Senator Bridget McKenzie has voiced her support for the Victorian Government’s application for a cattle grazing trial in the Victorian Alpine National Park. ‘‘Graziers have taken cattle into and across the mountains of Victoria’s Alpine regions as far back as the 1820s,’’ she said. The Brumby Labor government banned grazing.
plan figures. The stud’s most influential early sire was Vern Milton, bred by British genetics genius Dick de Quincey, imported as a five months old calf. He was followed by Vern Australia sired by Vern star Vern Robert. Tarrington Keep On (imp) followed these two, carrying as he did, five crosses of Vern Robert. On the female side, South Boorook was founded on Golf Hill blood, together with other quality Australian females and 18 females imported from England. From the outset, selection for milking ability has been vital and only the best milking strains have been retained in the herd. South Boorook has been a pioneer in a number of other ways too. For example, Jim Allen was the first in Australia to erect a purpose-built sale barn for his inaugural onproperty bull sale. The writer was privileged, as a young stock agent based at nearby Lake Bolac, to attend that sale and witness one of the very first on-property stud bull sales to be held anywhere in Australia. And JR did it in style. Prior to the sale, all the bulls were paraded on carefully graded turf and a leading judge awarded first, second and third prize sashes. During the February sales, a sprinkler system on the roof, keeps the barn cool. Following early sales, in a marquee set up on the lawn, JR entertained buyers and visitors with a banquet, followed by films of his most recent buying trip overseas. The stud’s influence on the Hereford breed in Australia can be seen in the

Te Mania shows cutting edge TE Mania Angus Beef Week display at its Mortlake headquartersthis year will include a record number of its autumn onproperty bull sale team, along with reference sires, a catalogue of 55 stud females to be offered at the bull sale and stock from its breeding herd. In the words of Te Mania Angus director Tom Gubbins, it will be “a complete one-stop shop for cutting edge Angus genetics”. “This year 1000 com-
‘One-stop shop for Angus genetics’ mercial cows will be offered through AuctionsPlus, in the Team Te Mania online commercial female sale, on the eve of our March 5 sale,” Mr Gubbins said. “At the sale we have catalogued 155 bulls as well as 55 stud females, who have sons in the sale, PTIC to calve in spring. “The females will be sold on the Helmsman sys-
tem finishing 30 minutes after the bull sale. “The bull sale will again be a video auction under cover, with bulls penned outside. “The bull catalogue features 15 sons of super sire Tuwharetoa Regent D145 sons, and 13 from the $91,000 bull Te Mania Emperor E343. “Regent is currently the highest long-fed

herd book-recorded sire on Breedplan and has matched that with the most progeny recorded on Breedplan in the past two years and is highly sought after for his meat quality and growth traits. “Te Mania Emperor sold for a then Australian record price at our 2011 autumn on-property sale and he currently ranks in the top one per cent of the breed for seven traits. “He is being used widely throughout the industry, as well as via semen sales to Chile, New Zealand, Britain and Europe.” Sires used in the breeding program at Te Mania Angus focus on sound structure and are commercially orientated to provide breeders with next-generation genetics. “That is reflected in the sire list for the 2014 catalogue and its diverse range of largely homebred sires with excellent temperament, including Te Mania Flame F565, Festivity F327, and Fitzpatrick F528,” Mr Gubbins said. “Increasingly the success of the Te Mania Angus gene pool is being achieved with homebred bulls and a cow herd run strictly under commercial conditions. “That has helped us reverse the genetic flow;

instead of importing genetics we are now exporting them with growing success. “We have always been focused on breeding Australian bulls for Australian conditions – with good temperament – something for which our cattle have long been recognised. “Our genetics are exported to some of the industry’s traditional powerhouse regions, and now through live export, to some of the more rapidlyemerging world markets.” In 2013, Te Mania Angus exported 120 stud heifers to China, 93 bulls to Russia and 29 to Kazakhstan and to expanding global semen markets. Team Te Mania members have also exported more than 400 breeding heifers to Russia and China.
The Te Mania Angus story started in 1928 in New Zealand and the same bloodline has been in Australia since 1971. Now under the management of Tom and Lucy Gubbins, and Hamish and Amanda McFarlane, Te Mania Angus includes a herd of 1600 breeding cows at Mortlake, 400 recipients for the embryo transfer program at Mansfield in Victoria’s high country and up to 80 lease sires at Connewarre. From 1971 Mr Gubbins’ parents and the stud’s Australian founders, Andrew and Mary Gubbins, helped to pioneer objective measurement in the Australian beef cattle industry and performance recording has since been a corner-
stone of Te Mania Angus. The herd now has more than double the number of trait leaders in Angus Group Breedplan than any other Australian stud. Its genetic program is also computer-analysed and matched for best possible joinings. Mr Gubbins said that by using the data from each animal, recorded on Breedplan, the program was able to select sire candidates from Australia and occasionally overseas for an out-cross sire best suited to the Te Mania Angus herd and its aim of breeding Australian bulls. He said once potential candidates are identified, the stud uses Total Genetic Research Management, to pick the most suitable matches.

ad smells coming from your septic system are a good indicator that something is not right. Not only are smells unpleasant and embarrassing, but they could be a clear sign that things are soon going to get worse. Your septic system is the digestive system in your back yard. It relies on naturally occurring, good bacteria to break down all the waste and grease that you flush away. The wrong type of bacteria or too few good bacteria in your system, leads to smells, clogged drains, overflowing septics and blocked absorption trenches. Families have been relying on Australian made Ecocare Activator for years. This Quality Assured product will clean, clear and condition everything from kitchen

During that period I have had no occasion to use the services of a plumber. Drains run freely, never is there an offensive odour and the septic system works perfectly,” commented V. Wright from New South Wales. One product – multiple uses. But it doesn’t stop with what you can see. As you flush it down the drain it continues to work unseen within the confines of your septic system. Restoring the natural balance of good bacteria and keeping smells and blockages away naturally.

n unpleasant smell is often the first sign that you have a problem with your septic system. But once the smell is there, the problem is already in place. Ecocare Activator, trusted for decades by families across Australia, is your one-stop solution to septic system woes. Ken and Glenise Outch, from Victoria, have been using Ecocare Activator for many years. This is what they had to say, “The product itself is fantastic. We use it around the house for all the cleaning and in turn it is constantly keeping our bacterial level in the septic system at optimal levels. It is also removing the need to use any harmful chemical cleaners which can kill off the system. “Thank you again for your product and the great service you provide…we always know you are only a free phone call away!” Used as an all over cleaner for the house, it is then simply flushed down
the drain or toilet where it continues to work within your pipes to clear blockages and condition your system. No need for expensive maintenance, no need to call out the plumber (and certainly no need to replace the system!).
ever used…The best product and the only one in my house for cleaning!” said Debbie Godfry from Queensland. “I purchased Activator as I had a problem with odour; a build up of fats; blockages in my seepage drains and wetness at the surface of my trench.
…it is keeping our costs low by saving on regular pump outs and having to get a plumber out to remove blockages and/or replace the system…we also don’t have the cupboard full of all different types of cleaners. Thank you again…” (Ken and Glenise Outch, Victoria) “We use it in the drains (toilet, shower, spa etc) and it has been great. I have even used it on my stainless steel oven, stove, sinks, benches, laminated benches and they have come up cleaner than any other product I have
