THE LINE HAS BEEN CAST FOR GPFJTI NAGAMBIE 2020 Launched on the banks of the Goulburn River, in magnificent conditions, the line has been cast for the 2020 GoFish Nagambie tournament, which is promised to be better and bigger than ever.
GoFish Nagambie Chief Executive Rod Lockwood said, “Our plan in 2019 was to lay a platform, learn from the experience and develop a sustainable long-term event. We have built relationships and connections building an event that is driven by community support. It has been one of the most successful ‘Fishing Events’ that we have ever seen, and it’s set to GROW in 2020. Everyone had expectations for GoFish Nagambie, and for us we have exceeded them all.” Nagambie is home to Australia’s richest and largest freshwater fishing competition and has seen a notable increase in recreational fishing since the inaugural tournament in 2019. Executive Chef of Mitchelton Wines, Dan Hawkins said, “Every day I notice more boats, and more fishers on the banks of the Goulburn, testing the waters in search of pockets of luck. We’re only 90 minutes from Melbourne, this area is very accessible”
Australians across the country are prepping their fishing gear in anticipation of the highly successful landmark annual event, GoFish Nagambie tournament. Women in Recreational Fishing Leader, Karen Rees said, “This is the first fishing event targeting women, it’s groundbreaking. It’s a rare thing to see women in the lime light and it’s pretty exciting. I encourage all women to come and have a go, bring your family and enjoy some time together.” The GoFish Nagambie fishing competition has a focus on environmental sustainability as it uses a catch, measure and release model to honour the environment and our native fish stocks. Victorian Fisheries Authority CEO, Travis Dowling has been casting a close eye on the waterways of Lake Nagambie and is extremely proud of the success of the native fish restocking program that has been taking place over the last ten years. “We came together ten years ago with a plan to restock the waterways. We’re seeing a reduction in carp and an increase in native species being caught. The restocking continues and today the children of Nagambie have assisted with the placement of 10000 Murray cod into the river. It’s about educating for generations to come.”

Whether you’re a keen angler, never fished before or are just looking for a weekend away, the 2020 GoFish Nagambie tournament is the perfect event to fill your last weekend of daylight savings. GoFish Nagambie 2020 is expected to attract thousands of visitors which will see up to 5,000 anglers compete in the fishing competition with over $500,000 worth of prices to be won. Beyond the fishing competition, GoFish Nagambie is a lifestyle and outdoor festival where there is something for the whole family. The outdoor event will feature family friendly entertainment, educational programs and a unique opportunity to promote the region’s local epicurean offerings and small businesses. “Fishing is good for you physically, it’s good for you mentally and socially. It will take you to new places to meet new people and develop lifelong friendships. There’s not much, not to like about it,” concluded Rod Lockwood. The competition is held between the 2nd – 5th April 2020.

LOCAL STUDENT, JENNA LED&UX OFF TO CANBERRA Local student off to Canberra to contribute to the political debate on Australia’s water issues
On 17 March 2020, 120 students will be attending the 25th National Schools Constitutional Convention to be held at the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House in Canberra over three days. These students have been selected from across Australia to debate the topic 'Federalism: The Constitution and Australia’s Water’. As a national delegate, Jenna Le Deux at Notre Dame College was selected from over 800 students from government, independent and Catholic schools. Jenna resides in the lakeside town of Nagambie and knows that water is a major topic of conversation. “I am very excited about the convention. I hope to gain a better understanding of Australia’s Water Management and politics itself, said Jenna. The purpose of the NSCC is to promote learning of the Australian Constitution and how it shapes our democracy. It is designed to inspire students to take an active interest
in the operation of government for those studying legal studies, history and/or politics, to consider careers in law, journalism, history and politics.

“Seeing as I live in the Goulburn Valley, water is a major political topic due to the farmers using irrigation and having to buy water to farm. Water management is very controversial, I see it on WIN News and in The Weekly Times that it doesn’t seem to be working for everyone and some farmers believe they are getting a bad deal as people are trading water and making money and inflating prices. I can’t wait to learn more about it when I go to Canberra, Jenna said.
“I think a coordinated State and Federal response is required and consultation with all stakeholders should be a priority. Goulburn Murray Water operates the largest irrigation delivery network in Australia, so their involvement is vital. Fundamentally, farmers should be able to access affordable, clean water to grow Australia’s food and they should be supported in this, Jenna said.

Students will participate in a mock referendum to determine the outcome of their deliberations.
Outcomes from the Convention will be incorporated into a CommuniquÊ that will be presented to the President of the 4FOBUF o ćF )PO 4DPUU 3ZBO GPS UBCMJOH JO Parliament. The Convention is supported by all state and territory Ministers for Education and is funded by the Australian Government

What’s in store for Jenna post Year 12, “After finishing Year 12 this year, I hope to move onto University, studying either criminology, forensics science or law. Anything to do with the Criminal Justice System interests me! If not, working in the media has always seemed fun and fascinating to me, finished Jenna.

STRATHBOGIE SHIRE TO HOST THE 2020 RURAL COUNCIL’S VICTORIA SUMMIT Strathbogie Shire Council will host the 2020 Rural Council’s Victoria Summit in May, with the theme Does Size Matter? Doing More with Less. The forum is an opportunity for councillors and local government staff from across the state to join with business and industry leaders, economic and community development officers, academics and education providers to collectively discuss the challenges faced by rural Municipalities. The event will take place at Mitchelton Wines in Nagambie from May 6th to 8th. Strathbogie Shire Mayor Cr Amanda McClaren said Strathbogie was proud to be hosting such an important event on the rural Victorian calendar. “This summit aims to equip all these leaders with the information, skills and capacity to respond to the ever-changing environment we are facing,’’ she said. Ms McClaren said the theme Does Size Matter? Doing More with Less significantly reflected what local government was trying to achieve by addressing national and global issues with limited time and resources. “The ability to do more with less has never been more important,’’ she said. “The Summit program will showcase how small organisations can overcome size and resource funding constraints to achieve positive outcomes for their communities.’’ Chair of Rural Councils Victoria, Cr Mary-Ann Brown, said the Summit will focus on delegates engaging in group discussions and information sharing. “It is quite rare for so many people from across the state to get together to discuss how we can all work better to serve our communities, so we’re really pleased to be bringing everyone together in Nagambie to do this,” she said.
NAGAMBIE 3608 BREWERY AND DISTILLERY CELEBRATES ITS 1ST BIRTHDAY In March 2018 the old buildings that once stood beside Jacobson’s Outlook were demolished to make way for a modern state of the art brewery and distillery, café and information centre. Two years on, the community struggles to remember what once stood on the site as they now enjoy passing the day away on the deck of the Nagambie Brewery DQG 'LVWLOOHU\ ZLWK PDJQL¿FHQW YLHZV DFURVV /DNH 1DJDPELH It has been 12 months since The Brewery flung open its doors to the public and to celebrate their 1st birthday, the Brewery management and staff invited locals to join them for a bite to eat and an ale or two. Operations Manager Christian De Vrieze said “We hope to see many of our regulars here tonight to thank them for their support in our first year and to welcome those who may come in for the first time.” Master Brewer and Distiller Jamie Chesher unveiled his “3608 Classic Day Gin” at the celebrations. Presented in a classic bottle, it’s sure to be a favourite of those that visit the Brewery and Distillery. Seven beers have been brewed over the past few months, some regular and seasonal and some test batches. A red wine experiment and the bottling of their new 3608 Classic Day Gin has been an exciting progress for the venue. “The Brewery now sustains itself. Some of the Brewery beer is now on draught
in Melbourne, and some venues there are ordering the new 3608 gin as well.” said Jamie. It wasn’t all smooth sailing, there have been a few teething problems along the way. “There were some monumental problems to start with at the beginning of last year but they were surmounted and finally the distillery and brewery started producing its brews and spirit,” said Jamie. The Nagambie 3608 Brewery and Distillery is becoming well known and the venue has expanded their distillery equipment which now provides an overflow that can be released into other hotels and restaurants around Melbourne and other areas. Jamie has great plans for making his beers, gin, vodka, and whiskey, all forecast for release as they are produced. A year ago he said “This is a step up in my education, running this smaller scale brewery and distillery. I hope to place my own mark on
the beers and spirits I produce.” He is now doing this. A birthday cake took pride of place on the public bar and Christian and Jamie cut the special cake during the evening. Christian said, “The Public Bar Café and Bistro will offer a small variety of pizzas, and a wide variety of seasonal delicacies and easy eats designed for simplicity and satisfaction with a wood cooking style in the fore.” The hope to make the restaurant a warm, cosy, hospitable place for folk to meet and greet and dine leisurely here while enjoying one of the brews made in the establishment or a local wine is happening. The Brewery employs over 20 staff and is open From Wednesday through to Sunday, midday to late. The Nagambie 3608 Brewery and Distillery 295-299 High Street Nagambie (03) 7019 8170
“We hope attendees will leave with great insights on how councils and other community organisations can support their communities to grow and flourish,’’ Cr Brown said. The summit features an impressive lineup of speakers including Craig Reucassel from ABC TV series War on Waste, climate change specialist Charlotte Turner. Speakers also include Victorian Gender and Sexuality Commissioner and Violet Town local Rowena Allen, and the Hon. Adem Somyurek MP, Victorian Minister for Small Business and Local Government. In a Rural Councils Victoria Summit first, a Rural Youth Summit for those aged 18 to 25 will be held to coincide and integrate with the Summit proper, recognising the importance of this demographic to rural Victoria.
On Friday the 21st of February between 8pm and 9pm, a yellow Ford BA Falcon sedan drove erratically and dangerously around Nagambie. This vehicle drove on parkland and was speeding along High St placing members of the public in danger. The male driver was arrested by police. Nagambie Police are seeking any witnesses, CCTV or dashcam of this vehicle. Please call Nagambie Police Station on 57942526 if you can assist.

RESIDENTS URGED TO HAVE SAY ON WATER PLAY AREA Residents are being encouraged to have their say about the idea of a water play area in Nagambie. The idea has been voiced by the community over many years, particularly in line with the desire for Lake Nagambie to return to its glory days of being a huge tourism and community drawcard. Strathbogie Mayor Cr Amanda McClaren said the Council had done significant community engagement over many years, with the reinvigoration of the lake a recurrent theme among residents. “We have heard the community tell us that they wish to see some significant water activities that the family can enjoy at Lake Nagambie,” she said. “Based on what we have heard so far there are two concepts which could complement each other. “The first is for an inflatable water park for the more adventurous which is currently being considered as part of the second round
of drought stimulus funding. The second is for a water play area, which could have land and water-based play areas.”
users are supportive of the idea, what the best location would be and what features could be included if the proposal went ahead.
To progress this second idea, Strathbogie Shire Council has engaged At Leisure Planners to undertake a feasibility study into the location and construction of a proposed water play area, which would include land and water-based options.
“We would encourage as many people as possible to share their views with us,” Cr McClaren said.
“Nagambie’s Buckley Park is a site which people have most commonly suggested to us, and now the Council is keen to gauge residents’ views on whether it is a feasible option.” “Similar parks at Bright and Tocumwal are huge draw cards to people and we believe that something similar would be a huge coup for our Shire.” Input being sought includes whether residents, community groups and potential
“An inflatable pool will be there at the Buckley Park consultation on Saturday March 7 as a Lifesaving Victoria initiative, which will hopefully draw a lot of people to the area, so we would encourage those in the area to come and chat with us about the water park concept. For those who can’t attend in person, we have made available a number of different ways in which our community can voice their views.”
THE CONSULTATION SESSIONS ARE AS FOLLOWS: In person at Buckley Park, Friday, March 6 from 4pm to 6pm and Saturday, March 7
from 9am to noon. Online at Our Say – www.strathbogie.vic.gov.au – (after 4 March) - visit the Nagambie Water Play Area Feasibility page to see what is going on and to provide feedback. This page will also be updated regularly throughout the project. Via social media on the Council’s Facebook page when posts about the project occur. FOUR PEOPLE ARE DEAD AFTER TWO TWIN-ENGINE PLANES COLLIDED MID-AIR AT MANGALORE Four people are dead after two planes collided mid-air before crashing into a paddock near Mangalore on February 19th 2020 at approximately 11:30am. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau reported that both planes were on training flights. The Piper Seminole aircraft left Mangalore airport to the south-west before turning east and was on a climb at the time of impact. It had been flying for about three minutes and hit the ground within seconds near SeymourAvenel Road, south of the Mangalore airport.
The Beechcraft Travel Air aircraft, operated by the Peninsula Aero Club, was travelling inbound from the south, from Tyabb to Mangalore. It was on a descent when it collided with the other plane south-east of Mangalore airport. It continued flying north after the collision for about two kilometres before slamming into the ground near Lambing Gully Road in Avenel, on private property. The planes were at 4000 feet at the time of the crash. It was reported that witnesses on the ground and in a helicopter saw the mid-air collision and the first plane crash.

AVENEL RESIDENTS VISIT VICTORIAN PARLIAMENT On Wednesday the 19th February eight Avenel residents visited Victoria’s State Parliament, all having an interest in government, they were keen to witness democracy in action. The group was made up of Avenel Action group members and 2 Councillors, Malcolm Little and Rob Gardner. They were guests of the local member Steph Ryan who had organised the visit for them. They had a full itinerary of meetings with members of both houses of Parliament and attended Question Time in both houses.
Lunch in the Sessions Restaurant was a highlight where we raised the issues of the storm damage, the interchange at Avenel and the train service on the Albury line. The history of the buildings, architecture and sheer opulence of the buildings were worth the visit alone without the theatre of the 2 houses as members of parliament goaded and shouted at each other. Thanks to Steph and her PA Lyndel for a most enjoyable and entertaining day. Supplied by Avenel Action Group

IT'S HERE, NOW! NAGAMBIE'S ANNUAL WATER FESTIVAL The annual Nagambie on Water Festival (NOW) is just days away and is set to bring High Street Nagambie and the Lake alive. The NOW Festival has been showcasing Nagambie’s stunning natural resources, home grown products and community spirit every year since 2008. This year the Nagambie Lions will partner to present the 2020 Lions NOW Festival. Our favourite events are back, some with enhancements and others that are brand new. The uniquely Nagambie events focus on our connection to water and local agriculture. The Tahbilk Great Grape stomp is one such event, using Tahbilk Wine grapes, contestants stomp and squish some of this year’s harvest to see if they can win the major prize. New events this year include the Neil Beer Floating Golf Shootout, with a car up for grabs and all profits going to Lions Need for Feed to support farmers in the North East
who have been dealt a double whammy – drought and fire. Enhancements aren’t just for the adults, as this year Go Adventure Nagambie brings a suite of activity to the festival’s Stay and Play event. Yabbie races on shore, pedal boats, paddle boards and even a pontoon river ride are just some of what Go Adventure Nagambie has to offer. There will be face painting and a mechanical bull to test both young and old at bronco riding. Don’t forget our favourite Aqua Orbs proving anyone CAN walk on water. If high energy is your thing then the Lions NOW festival and Mitchelton Winery have you covered with two open water swims, 600 meters for those just “testing the waters” and the traditional 1.1km swim, both races with kids and adult categories along with the Ryan Gowty memorial fastest female and male perpetual trophy. The Costa Community Canoe challenge pits you and 3 mates against other 4 persons relay teams. We have heard
some polies have been practising and are looking for 2 more energetic individuals to join their team. If you’re not in for high energy activities then sit back and relax at the Taste Nagambie’s Story event situated on Jackobson’s Outlook. Browse the history stands that provide a taste of our multicultural history, listen to the tunes of Cush Ryder brought to you by Royal Mail Hotel, watch the traditional Smoking ceremony and welcome to country, spend the afternoon immersed in poetry and spoken word, and watch this all with a nice local wine, refreshing regional cider or ice cold beer. And that’s just Saturday! If you’re lucky enough to be in town over the entire long weekend, get to Glass Square on Friday night for some homemade, wood fired pizza and some open mic opportunities, let the kids and teens go wild at the Block Party at the Youth Hub. Sunday sees a chill out closure to the main Saturday events again in the
Glass Square precinct. There’s an ecumenical service at 11am, Reel Racing at Nagambie Bowls from 2pm and the start of the wind down from 3pm, special appearance from our own Lady Gaga and Rod Stewart. The major raffle prize will be drawn at 8pm and the Charity auction for Nagambie Healthcare starts straight after. Items on offer include a weekend at a Southbank apartment (fits 4), with access to gym, pool spa as well as 4 tickets to the Big Bash (next season) courtesy of Prue and Geoff Dobson, there’s also lots of other great items donated by our many businesses who want you all to come, stay and play in Melbourne’s backyard waterway. Nagambie… you’ve gotta love it!

COME AND BUY FRESH VEGETABLES AT THE COMMUNITY HOUSE
The Community House Garden has been a labour of love for over seven years. Designed and instigated by Donna Winter-Irving, it has continued to grow and now produces wonderful vegetables and herbs all year around, available to the community of Nagambie for a small donation. Today, around ten people meet up every Monday to plant, harvest, weed and have a jolly good WLPH WRJHWKHU *RW JUHHQ ¿QJHUV RU ZRXOG OLNH WR JHW VRPH" 7KHQ 0RQGD\ PRUQLQJV DW WKH +RXVH is your time and place to be! Every year, Australians spend $7 billion on professional gardening and landscaping services. A staggering number, perhaps especially considering it is Baby Boomers and older generations who are leading the way. The figures do however highlight how very important the great outdoors is to us all. To some, gardening isn’t only about making the immediate surroundings look beautiful and inviting, to them, gardening is also about community. Every Monday at 10am, a group of enthusiastic volunteers meet up on 7 Prentice Street where a very productive garden is constantly growing, changing and expanding. The idea and vision back in 2012 when the group started, was to recycle, reuse and reinvent, rather than buying new. Fruit boxes were painted and

ST JOSEPH'S PRIMARY SCHOOL
SWIMMING SUCCESS
BUSY BEGINNING AT ST. JOSEPH’S
Congratulations to Mitchell House on winning the 2020 House swimming carnival. It is their fourth victory in a row, while Goulburn won the three years before that. All swimmers performed so well, and had lots of fun.
We have had a very busy start to 2020. Some activities that we have been involved in include…Cheering on the cyclists at the Jayco Herald Sun Tour at Mitchelton. Gabby & Morgan even got to hold the starting ribbon! The commissioning of our grade 6 leaders at our Opening School Mass. Money line fundraiser for the Bushfire Appeal in which we raised $370 and the F/1/2 class had the longest line. Enjoying our garden and building some new garden beds and creating an irrigation system. Human body workshop where the students learnt through hands on experiences about the heart, brain and eye. Opening School BBQ and get together evening. It was lovely to meet our new families. Grade 5/6 leadership day in Mooroopna - we were inspired by several guest speakers about what being a good leader means. St. Joseph’s Swimming Carnival - congratulations gold team! We had 9 students compete in the District Swimming Carnival in Euroa. Congratulations to Micah, Max & Hunter who also competed in the Division Swimming Carnival. We cooked and ate pancakes on Shrove Tuesday because traditionally Christians cooked and ate pancakes to clear their pantry before the season of Lent. Thanks to the grade 6 students for cooking the pancakes. All donations went to Project Compassion. Ash Wednesday Mass - Father Tony reminded us of the three things we should try and do during Lent: Fasting, Almsgiving and Praying. Our year 6 leaders distributed the ashes to everyone with a sign of the cross on our foreheads.
Congratulations to the P &F team of Katie & Linc Sullivan, Alicia McLeod and Luke the lifeguard who took out the staff, student, P&F relay. Congratulations to our team of 24 swimmers who swam at the Euroa District swimming carnival. All swimmers showed great skill, fitness, team spirit and commitment. The cheering and encouragement of each other was a highlight. It was lovely to see so many parents and grandparents come along to assist and cheer their children on. Congratulations to Campbell, Eliza, Jazarah, Leyla, Zuri, Abbey, Dash, Liam, Darcy and Tyron who all represented the school at The Ranges Division swimming carnival in Seymour.
AVENEL PRIMARY SCHOOL
NEWS AT AVENEL PRIMARY Thank you to everyone who was able to come in for Parent/Teacher Interviews. This is a really valuable time where teachers and parents are able to talk openly about meeting the needs of your child. If you haven’t had an interview yet, please feel free to contact the school to set up a time. We believe in open two way communication between home and school. Not only are these interviews an opportunity to discuss what your child knows now, and what their next point of learning will be, but it also gives parents the chance to talk to teachers about their child and pass on relevant information to us. After a great effort at the Swimming District Sports where Avenel were the winners of the Handicap Shield, 19 students qualified to compete at the next level. Congratulations to our Junior School Council representatives who were presented with their badges at Monday’s assembly. The councillors were voted in by their classmates and will now represent their peers to make improvements around the school, organise special events and complete fundraising activities.

SPORT UPDATES NAGAMBIE WOMENS GOLF On 26/02/20 only a small group of 8 ladies played a Stroke event. Even though numbers were down, it was none the less enjoyable. We were pleased to welcome a new member Fiona Crawley and look forward to her joining us as often as she can. The ABC Grade winner was Irene Keogh with 77. As the Shrimp character in 'Shark Tale' says Irene was "Fairly happy". 9 hole winner was Irene 39. 18 hole ball winners were Irene 77 and Annette Mills 79. Great to see Annette finding her form again. 9 hole balls went to Irene 39 and Annette 40. NTP on the 3rd was Irene and no one managed NTP on the 16th. Next week 04/03/20 will be a Stableford game. Chicken Run Results The Chicken Run played on 27/02/20 was a Par Competion played on the back 9 with 34 competitors, a great turn up. The winner was ditto , oh sorry, I mean Lindsey Hall with + 3, making his win a Hat Trick. NTP on the 13th was Dave Love. Next week 05/02/20 will be Stroke.
NAGAMBIE MENS GOLF The laws of physics were put to the test at the Nagambie golf club on Sunday, entropy being the lack of order or predictability, just because something is possible does not mean it is probable. The probability of Shaun Bryant winning two weeks in succession was such a high probability finding a household calculator with enough digits to gain the answer would have been difficult. Bryant returned his best score ever for 18 holes 78-9-69 with his usual highly entertaining round having it all, 3 chip ins from off the green, great shot making when he found himself in trouble and a shaky last 3 finishing holes to earn the victory and the March monthly medal. Runner up went to the always competitive Phil Hageman producing a 87-16-71 finishing ahead of David Love who had the pleasure of witnessing Bryant's winning round and pushing him the entire way with a 83-12-71. The nearest the pins went to Tim Baldwin getting one pin high on the 3rd, Mick O'Connell knocking it close to the 13th and 'Steggles' Hall belting one with all his might onto the 16th. Next weeks golf will be a Par event with the inform S.Bryant on office duty and G. Whiteman in the bar.

YEAR 10 NAGAMBIE GIRLS CONVINCINGLY BEAT ‘OPEN’ CLASS SCHOOL GIRLS TO TAKE VICTORIAN STATE TITLES. Two dedicated and determined 15 year old Nagambie Rowing Club girls, have taken ‘all’ before them, culminating in winning the ‘Open School Girls’ Victorian State Championship in the double scull, this past weekend. An arduous ‘heat’ race followed by a well contested finals race, saw the Nagambians push through at the thousand metre mark, and drive for home, winning by 15 seconds. That equates to five boat lengths against older, bigger and stronger competition. State races are held over 2000 gruelling metres, which takes about eight and a half minutes of concentrated effort. There is a big difference in physicality and development between athletes of 15 and
17/18 years old, not to mention extra years of training. Imogen Cafasso and Sadhbh (Sive) O’Sullivan, seen below with their coach, Suzan Andrews, beat the odds with good rowing and a healthy dose of ‘can-do’, against what was on paper, a far superior field. Coach Sue and the girl’s parents are all about balance in life and ensure that the girls are well-grounded, and understand that other areas of life need equal attention too. Whilst the girls are understandably excited by their results, they know not to rest-on-therelaurels, and need to keep working steadily and quietly towards future goals. The immediate Goal is the National Rowing Championships in Penrith, NSW, this March, 23rd to 28th, where they will step-up in class against the countries best. The Coach said she would be pleased if they made the Open School Girl Double Scull Final, which
will see thirty-odd other school girl crews, fighting out in heats, semi’s and finals. “It is a big step-up in class and the atmosphere can be overwhelming. It is important the girls keep it together mentally and physically, to achieve their best result. Their parents are great people and will play
an important part in their progress,” Sue said. We wish the girls good luck and good rowing at SIRC (Sydney International Rowing Centre, Penrith) later this month. The second picture shows the girls with the other place winners in their event.
