Evolve Youth Committee team are still buzzing from the incredible success of the Blue Skies Youth Music Event held at the Northern Republic in Euroa on Friday October 4th. The awesome lineup of talent performing included Rat hammock, Nancie Schipper and Splinter Kiss. Entry to the event was free, made possible through the Victorian Government’s FReeZA program that supports young Victorians to get involved in their community by planning and running drug, alcohol

to the delight of the crowd. Nancie has played to a crowd of 40,000 at the 2019 St Kilda Festival with rave reviews.

Northern Republic,” said Strathbogie Shire, Youth Development Officer, Melanie Likos.

Headlining the show was low-fi indie rock group Rat!hammock. Rat!hammock are a band on a steep upward trajectory, with their music on regular rotation on national broadcaster Triple J.

Local Euroa band Splinter Kiss, did not disappoint! The group of four mates from Euroa Secondary College were thrilled to have played alongside such a quality line up. No doubt we will be seeing more of this band as they have already tasted success winning Regional Battle of the Bands last year and placing in the finals nationally.

“The free transport from surrounding towns made it easy for them to attend without trying to find a mode of travel to and from the destination,” Melanie said.

Talented 19-year-old Nancie Schipper, a recent finalist in Triple J’s Unearthed High Competition, took to the stage

“All those that attended had an amazing time with their friends enjoying great pizzas dished up by the team at the

and smoke-free events for other young people. The event ran from 12.30 - 4.30pm providing a great opportunity for the youth of the region to see what live music was all about.

“The event offered a taste of what live music can do for the region, and we hope to be able to provide further opportunity for young people to experience the thrill and enjoyment live music provides.” added Melanie.

On Tuesday the 1st of October, a keen eyed member of our community reported a suspicious male in a vehicle around Bailieston. Police attended and found the male to be in possession of stolen chainsaws and other items from rural properties in the area. He was also in possession of a quantity of drugs. The 25 year old male offender from Shepparton was arrested, interviewed and charged for 3 counts of theft, burglary, handle stolen goods, deal property suspected proceeds of crime, drive whilst disqualified, use unregistered motor vehicle, possess drug of dependence and commit indictable offences whilst on bail. The male was remanded by police to appear at Shepparton Magistrates Court. This highlights the need for everyone to be vigilant and immediately report suspicious activity to police. Conduct regular checks of your property including sheds and tools. Unfortunately it’s becoming common for criminals outside of the area to come to our neighbourhood and steal items. We all play a part in policing this brilliant part of Victoria. Great communication from our community

helps us with evidence against criminals leading to their arrest and discourages other criminals from committing offences in our area. So if it looks suspicious to you then be sure to give us a call. In addition, there’s increasing reports of sheep thefts in the area. Make sure all stock is tagged and conduct regular checks of stock numbers, locks, fences and gates. Many farms are starting to utilise field cameras and CCTV for extra security. So it’s worth investing in these additional measures. Keep in mind that the new Police Assistance Line is now up and running. You can report theft, lost property, property damage, register a party or inform police when you are away from home on a holiday. It’s as easy as calling 131 444 or going to police.vic.gov.au

The highest point in the small township of Avenel will be the focal point for the seventh annual fun run and walk. On Sunday 13 October families will gather and take part in the annual run or walk up Lovers Hill, if nothing else but to enjoy the view from the top. This annual event encourages children and adults to take a new look at Avenel while enjoying a run or walk over 2.5 km and this year organisers are encouraging people to also be part of the Friendship Walk which could include a friend or a canine on a lead. The run which commences at 9 o’clock (assemble at Tennis Club 8.30am) can be walked at a leisurely pace as well. If participants are really keen they can do it twice to test their aerobic fitness. With the spring sunshine and a Sunday market organised Avenel

will include this extra event just for the fun of it. Participants are asked to register by phoning 0438 678 323 to assist organisers with plans however, it is possible to register on the day as well. The run starts and finishes near Jubilee Park and contestants are visible from there as they tackle the hill. There is an open class, secondary and primary age

group but the essence of the run is just to “have fun” and take-in the views, with families encouraged to participate. At the same time the Avenel Market will be showcasing some of the best local fresh produce. The market which is held monthly is proud of its ‘make it, bake it, grow it’ mantra providing talented local people with an outlet for their crafts and produce.

Over the past 100 years, the Forbes family has lived in Nagambie for over three generations, starting with James Forbes in the 1800’s with his foundry business, and following him was William Livingstone Forbes his son, in the 1900’s.

It was not unusual for a father to serve in WW1 and then a son to serve in WWII. But saying goodbye to two sons heading off to war would be hard and difficult to imagine how Eva must have felt when her sons ventured off to foreign places as teenagers of a similar age as their father was when he went to war.

William married Eva Haines from Whroo when he came home after World War One in Europe. They were blessed with two sons, Lindsay and Bruce who both were brought up in Nagambie and worked here as young men.

Bruce served in the A.I.F and went to Alice Springs and was in a Transport Unit until he was sent overseas, to serve in the infantry in Morotai which was part of the Dutch controlled Islands now in Indonesia.

In 1925 Bruce was in the Ford motor car business in Nagambie. Bruce Forbes is now 95 years of age and is one of Nagambie’s well known and respected, retired local businessman, and historian. He followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the Australian Imperial Forces A.I.F, in World War Two when he was 18 and served from 1942 – 1945. Bruce asked permission from his father William if he could enlist, as he was under 19 years of age. His father said “yes” and signed his enlistment papers. William’s other son Lindsay also joined the A.I.F and went overseas to serve his country as well. Bruce and Lindsay’s father William had served in the A.I.F in the First World War in France, in the 3 Motor Transport Company unit. So he knew what his sons would face when they went into combat.

Come one, come all, the young and the young at heart, male and female. November is approaching and so we prepare for men’s health month. Better known as “Movember,” where men grow moustaches or beards, colour their hair or eyebrows or simply do something different and enjoyable to create an awareness of the importance of good Health. All funds raised will go towards local men’s health. This year’s Nagambie Men’s Health Events kick-off with the “Movember Walk/Run/Ride” from the Royal Mail Hotel to the Murchison East Hotel (22 Kms), on Sunday 10 th November, from

His brother Lindsay also served in the Islands overseas with the American forces making runways with heavy machinery for the aerodromes required by the military. Bruce was demobbed in 1945 and was happy to come home. In 1946 he joined the Nagambie RSL and is now a respected Life Member of the Club and is the oldest member there. He married Carrie (Caroline) Henderson on 24 March 1951, and was blessed with a daughter Sandra. He left the Ford business to his brother Lindsay and started a Massey Ferguson Tractor business where the stock and feed shop is now. By 2014, Bruce had established himself as a well known historian of many unique collections of memorabilia. One of his most impressive collections

6.30 am. If you think you can’t walk that distance, why not ride your bike or just do part of it (maybe to the Wahring Service Station) and then get a lift with one of the support vehicles. At the end there will be a get together at the Murchison East pub dining room. It’s a social event, all welcome. The next event will be a “Men’s Health Breakfast”, also for men and women to celebrate men’s health together, on Wednesday 13th November. To be held at the Royal Mail Hotel, kicking off at 7.30 am and going through until 9.00 am. Guest speaker will be Brent Davies

is of his father’s 100 year old photos, 1916-1918 booklets of overseas places he’d visited, his medals, postcards, war memorabilia, newspaper cuttings, The Red Baron history and many other items that his father, William Forbes had brought home.

Congratulations Bruce on behalf of the community and your fellow RSL members for your valuable 60 years membership service to the RSL of Australia and your local Nagambie RSL sub-branch.

Bruce was amazed to find this collection after his father died. “My father” Bruce said, just placed it all in a cupboard and shut that part of his life off. He was pleased to be home. He went into the Forbes family foundry business.” Bruce was thrilled with what he had found and archived his father and family’s historic photos and memorabilia in his private museum. However, for the past few years, Bruce has resided in the Nagambie Healthcare’s Lakeview Lodge hostel. On Thursday, October, 3, in front of Bruce’s daughter Sandra Speck, nephew Brian Forbes, Nagambie RSL Vice President Larry King, his fellow hostel residents, staff and volunteers and visitors, Nagambie RSL President David Keall presented Bruce Forbes with a framed 60 year membership certificate from the Returned and Services League of Australia; the national body of the RSL. The certificate read, ‘To Bruce Forbes, in recognition of 60 years cumulative service as a member of the League. Signed by Major General Greg Melick AO RFD FANZCN SC. National President.’

RDA SEYMOUR NEED VOLUNTEERS Do you have a love for horses and a little spare time to help the team at Seymour’s ‘Riding Develops Abilities’ club?

trained to teach children, but gain a huge sense of satisfaction from seeing the pure joy on the children’s faces.

Riding Develops Abilities Seymour helps children or adults with disabilities by providing riding lessons. Horses are wonderful therapy and it is amazing what can be achieved whilst on the back of a horse.

We need more volunteers, people who can lead a horse, people who can walk beside the horse to relay instructions from our Coach and ensure the child’s safety. We need people to groom and saddle the horses prior to each rally. We need people to do many other jobs as well, no experience necessary... we will train you!

The club are calling for new volunteers and are reaching out to the Nagambie community to be a part of the club delivering the program. There is no financial gain, but the reward is much greater. You will see first hand the participants enjoy the freedom, the responsibility and companionship they develop whilst being involved with the horses.

Our program can only run due to volunteers donating their own time to help children who aren’t their own. RDA Seymour is a unique sporting club because we and our volunteers aren’t there for our own children, we are there for the child of someone we don’t even know.

The improvement in areas such as speech, concentration, confidence, physical improvement, muscular development are all clearly displayed in each lesson. The total joy and laughter provided by our horses gives these children a unique outlet. Even the thrill of sitting up high and learning to steer a powerful animal gives these children a sense of control and independence not found in their everyday lives. Seymour RDA are happy to announce a new partnership with Nagambie Primary School, with 7 new riders starting in term 4. The children will be bused from school on a Wednesday afternoon thanks to Seymour Coaches. Our volunteers are an amazing group of people who may not have any horses skills, may not be

We have 4/5 children per lesson, a horse leader and at least one side walker, that’s 8 or 10 volunteers besides the coach. If you can have time to help on a Wednesday 1-3.30 or every second Thursday 8-12.30 please contact us and volunteer your time. It doesn’t matter if you have another commitment and can’t make it to every lesson. We welcome anyone who is interested to come along and see what we do. DO YOU WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT, BUT ARE TIME POOR TO ATTEND YOUR MEETINGS? However, we are aware that many people have other commitments at this time which make it difficult to attend the meetings each week.

T.O.W.N. (Take Off Weight Naturally) Club Nagambie have been operating in Nagambie for nearly 3 years and have had many successes with members losing weight and becoming healthier as well as developing life long habits to sustain their goals. We meet each Wednesday at 4.00pm in the Conference Room of Nagambie Health Clinic 20 Church St Nagambie, for our weekly weigh in and Group Discussion.

An exciting new venture is now commencing. In view of the limited time available to many people, an initiative known as T.O.W.N. Weigh and Go is being established. There is a joining fee followed by a low-cost weekly payment of $5. Weigh ins are encouraged each week, but membership only requires a monthly weigh-in. Full support is provided, dependent on members’ availability.

T.O.W.N. Weight Loss Clubs have provided a community service for over 50 years, with over 90 Clubs meeting weekly throughout Victoria. T.O.W.N. is a low-cost organisation, run by volunteers, to support members to lose weight, maintain their loss, and change their habits to embrace a healthy lifestyle. In Neil’s final newsletter report, he reflects, “As the old saying goes, ‘find the job you love and you’ll never work another day in your life.’ My ten years at Avenel have never felt like work because there has always been a spirit of adventure amongst our staff, parents and students. We have sought to carve out new territory together so that our children could have a broad, high-quality education. The great thing about our school is that

NAGAMBIE TENNIS COACH RAISES NAGAMBIE SCHOOL UP FOR VICTORIAN TENNIS AWARD Nagambie Primary School Principal Rob French received a letter from Gabriella Tobias of Tennis Victoria. It said “Tennis Victoria recently asked the Victorian tennis community to nominate worthy applicants for consideration for the 2019 Victorian tennis Awards. The quality of the nominations was so strong that selecting finalists was an extremely difficult task for their voting panels.” She continued on, “Having said that, it is with great pleasure that I inform you that Nagambie Primary School is a finalist in the Most Outstanding award category. Congratulations.”

THANKS NORM – TENNIS LEGEND For over 55 years Norm Cahill, formerly of Kirwan’s Bridge, has been involved in coaching tennis at a major level. Norm now lives in Nagambie Healthcare units in Church Street. Nagambie with wife Bernice of 61 years. and he wanted them to get together to play tennis in a friendly relaxed environment. Norm’s passion has always been tennis since he was a young man playing inNagambie’s High Street courts. 88 year old Norm has been married to wife Bernice for over 60 years; and shehas supported him in all his endeavours. They had a large family of 10 children of which many are interested in tennis too. Norm was selected as the third ever Tennis Coach Australia-Victoria legend and presented with this prestigious award by tennis legend Ken Rosewall in November 2011 year at a presentation ceremony function held at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club. So Norm is a Tennis Legend in his own right and is a fine example to tennis players across the world, and especially in our sporting district, he is accepted as a fine tennis coach. For many years Norm has been

coaching young players on a regular basis at the Nagambie tennis courts and St Joseph’s ones. To encourage the young players he has for the past seven years conducted the Cahill Cup - Inter school challenge for participants from Nagambie Primary School, St Joseph’s, Avenel Primary School and Rushworth Primary School. All of Norm’s efforts are recognizable each week when the young school tennis players improve their playing skills. Thanks to his continuous and dedication the local schools have benefitted from his teaching and skills and appreciate all that Norm has done for them over the many years he has worked with them. He believes, like Don Bradman, that sport can play an important part in a child’s life. It teaches them teamsmanship, and offers them alternate interest and a healthy activity than just staying indoors.

A SIMILAR SOLAR PANEL PROJECT AT ANOTHER SITE Goulburn Valley Water is in the implementation stage of a project to install 1.9 megawatts of solar systems on GVW land and infrastructure to help tackle climate change. Over the coming months GVW will be rolling out 16 solar systems across sites in ten GVW townships, including Shepparton, Kilmore, Cobram and Mansfield, to help the Victorian Government reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. GVW Managing Director Peter Quinn said GVW has committed to investing $5.39M to the initiative and says going down this path just makes sense. “This is about maximising the efficiency of our business and embracing renewable energy to reduce our operating costs, keeping bills low for our customers.”

Project Manager Glenn Bewicke said GVW is committed to its carbon emission reduction targets and has selected the largest power consumer sites as priorities for the roll out.

“The technology is expected to contribute to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 4,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent each year, with the average annual renewable energy output more than 3,000 megawatt hours. This is equivalent to providing clean energy for 330 average residential homes."

“This is a technically feasible and cost effective way for GVW to meet some of our objectives,” he said.

Mr Bewicke said the new solar systems will pay for themselves in around eleven years through reduced energy usage.

out as an obvious step forward in this space, and one we’re more than ready to take.”

Any customers affected by works or their impacts will be advised prior to construction taking place.

“The treatment of water and wastewater is an energy-intensive business, in particular at our sites with food processing industries, so the installation of solar arrays at these larger sites was a priority.”

“This project aims to deliver multiple benefits to GVW, our customers and the environment.”

Over a 12 month period, more than 4,800 high-efficiency solar PV panels will be installed on available land surrounding some of GVW facilities, as well as some clearwater storage tanks and building roofs.

“With land available around much of our infrastructure, and favourable climatic conditions in our service area, consideration of solar technology stands

“This project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well as costs associated with energy bills.”

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH -

Helping communities stay safe A brand new group has recently come under the umbrella of the Community House. It is the Nagambie and District Neighbourhood Watch. However new to the NLCH, the group has existed for nearly 25 years, just five years shy of the Victorian Neighbourhood Watch itself. Derek, the president, has been involved for twenty-four. “It was the wife who brought me along,” Derek tells me as we meet up to talk about the group and its future, “she drags me everywhere!” Derek continues with a warm laughter. But if it was her doing that Derek got involved, what made him stay? Read on to find out more about the Neighbourhood Watch and what you can do to help keep our community safe!

minimise preventable crime and promote closer ties. It can involve anything from changing numberplate screws on cars and thereby reducing risk of theft, to visiting local schools, teaching kids about crime prevention or regularly meeting up with the Victorian Police to find out what is going on in the area. Back in the day, the Nagambie Neighbourhood Watch also pitched in to clean up around town. “We had these big “Clean Up Days” when we used to pick up rubbish on backroads and there was tons of it!” Derek says. “Although it’s been a while since we’ve done that now, as we’d like to focus more on activities relating to crime prevention.”

any suspicious activity, like cars driving past really slowly for instance. The Police reports are also important as they clearly explain what is happening; did anyone get their house broken into? Is there crime happening in the area? That kind of information is crucial.” So what is Derek’s vision? What is he hoping to see happen in the future with the Nagambie and District Neighbourhood

Watch? “We’d like to have a lot more members!” Derek immediately states. - “And for people to start thinking more about each other and about what is going on in town. How can we improve safety and security and not just take for granted that things are always going to stay the way they are now…”

Most people today would know at least a little bit about the Neighbourhood Watch and what they do. Perhaps you came across the group when they participated in the Glass Square Block Party, where they changed screws on about 20 numberplates? Or maybe you've noticed one of their ads in the paper? In brief, the Neighbourhood Watch is a community based crime prevention program, where the police and community work together to

So what is the local Neighbourhood Watch group all about? As I ask Derek what he thinks the group represents or involves, this is his response: “We’re a very friendly group and we welcome anybody! When the Police come around we get a report from them about what’s been going on, but essentially we’re all about helping our communities stay safe. We encourage people to keep an eye on their neighbours and report if they see

Nagambie PRIMARY SCHOOL

NAGAMBIE PRIMARY SCHOOL By Principal Rob French.

ANOTHER GREAT ATHLETICS SEASON AT NAGAMBIE PRIMARY We love athletics at Nagambie PS and just before the holidays we held our annual House athletics carnival at the school. Having postponed the event for a week due to bad weather, we enjoyed a beautiful day. Steve Elson, Mr B and Greg Heathcote had the track looking fabulous. All Prep to Grade 6 students had a great day of fun, friendship, activity and competition. We had been practising our running, jumping and throwing all term in PE and after school Sporting Schools and all of the practice paid off with great performances. Congratulations to Goulburn House on their very close win this year. Their House Leaders Georgie, Murph, Jacob & Alysha were very proud to accept the shield.

NAGAMBIE PRE-SCHOOL

Bocce, Word Finder and Charades - just to name some of the fun things the students enjoy participating in with the residents. Both residents and students look forward to their time together. The residents have made the comment that they enjoy the activities that make them think and that the students make them feel young again!

NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB MEN’S RESULTS The fourth round of the Social club trophy was taken out by in form golfer Shane McCormick returning 37 points, with the greens cored only a week earlier putting was the big concern but McCormick negated that by chipping in on two occasions. Runner up with a handicap equaling 36 points went to David Love while third place went to the ever consistent Lindsay Hall with his usual nonchalant round managing 35 points. The nearest the pins were collected by Michael Sloan on the 3rd making a return from a completed footy season, Alan 'Angry' Anderson claimed the 13th and Tim Baldwin floated one up to the 16th. The McPherson Wines two man ambrose proved a popular event with 13 pairs contesting, the course was in fine condition with the spring growing season benefiting the fairways and the greens looking great after coring a fortnight ago. With a strong south wind blowing constantly across the course the scores returned from the top finishing pairs were surprisingly good. The winners taking home a dozen bottles each of McPherson Wines finest were Kal Winnell and Jeremy Ezard, taking full advantage of the strong southerly birding all 4 par 5's on the course and shooting a 67 five under par nett 63.5 They were 3 shots ahead of runners up the surprise pairing of Des Phelan and Peter Lawrence with 76 nett 66.5, third place went to Ben Cassar and Tim Baldwin 73 nett 67.25. AVENEL BOWLS CLUB The weather stayed fine although it was a little cooler last Tuesday, 1st October, for the first match in Midweek pennant. Division 2 went up the Hume Freeway to Euroa where their hosts finished the allocated number of ends as the overall winner by 9 shots; well done to Pam's team on their 5 shot win but unfortunately not enough to cover the other two teams' losses. Meanwhile Division 5 travelled a bit further along the Goulburn Valley Highway to Shepparton Park. After all their ends had been completed Avenel enjoyed an overall win by 7 shots; Maria's team managed the better while Mia's team went down by only 1 shot. This week Division was playing host to Shepparton Park while Division 5 had another away match, this time going to Euroa. Last Saturday a large contingent of our members

went to Euroa for a practice match against Euroa and Seymour; an opportunity for the Weekend Match Committee to try some different team combinations for the coming pennant season. Some teams fared better than others. We will have another opportunity this coming Saturday as we are once again journeying to Euroa for another practice match, this time Hill Top and Violet Town will be joining us. Those members interested in playing are asked to write their name on the list on the noticeboard and the teams will be picked Thursday evening after practice. Tomorrow, Thursday 10th October, there will be a Working Bee starting at 9am: the aim is to continue the refurbishment of the ditches. Remember the adage: 'many hands make light work'. A big thank you to those men who worked on the ditches last Friday, 4th October.

NAGAMBIE CRICKET CLUB The opening round of the Shepparton Cricket Association was a case of nearly but not quite. The A Grade side played Tatura at home. With three overs remaining in the first innings Nagambie was in the commanding position of 6 for 187 when two Tatura fielders collided which resulted in both players sustaining severe injuries and being taken from the ground by ambulance. Due to the lengthy delay the match was abandoned and declared a draw. Matty Martin dominated proceedings with a rapid fire 60 runs which included 9 boundaries and a six, Luke Nolan compiled 42 whilst Zac Winter Irving 32 and Brayden Biggs 20 both remained not out. The C Grade team travelled to Numurkah and amassed 4 for 167. Blair Taylor Lloyd smashed 80 and Will Ulrich remained 43 not out. Numurkah chased down the total with two overs remaining losing five wickets in the process. Jayden Sanderson 1 for 17 and Tyler Ritchie 1 for 25 were the best of the bowlers. After a promising first season in the Shepparton Junior Cricket Association the club is fielding teams in the under 16,14,12 and 10 age groups. The under 16 and 14 teams commence on Saturday October 12, the under 12 side starts on Saturday October 19 and the under 10's to be confirmed. Rick Misiti is the coordinator of the Woolworths Junior Blasters program. It is a six week introduction to cricket for boys and girls aged from 5 to 7 years. Commencing on Thursday October 17 through to Thursday December 12 from 4.30 to 5.30 pm at the recreation reserve. For more details call Rick on 0438791312.
