After more than 100 years, an iconic family-run business is closing it's doors.

F.W. Parris and Sons, better known as "Parris’s" by locals, was opened in 1913 by Frederick William Parris and today is run by his greatgrandson, Bruce Parris. Recently, word has started to trickle out that Parris’ had been sold and Bruce and Gladys would soon close the store. FW Parris & Son will close for good by the end of October, but Bruce will keep the truck and continue to cart wool. Until then, they plan to sell every bit of stock they can. The Parris’s have decided to sell the property, and as Bruce put it, “get out of the game while we have our health.” It is impossible to understand Nagambie without understanding the hardware store at the Parris end of town — FW Parris has been a large component of what makes Nagambie what it is today. The family's dedication to community service that helped make Parris’ so special and both the store and the Parris family helped drive the town's growth from the 1910s to 2020. FW Parris and Son had a long history of going above and beyond, even talking people out of buying items they didn't need.

Bruce said shutting down is a difficult decision, but one that's been a long time coming. "It's not an overnight decision, Gladys and I have been planning this for some time," he said. “I’ve walked around here for 53 years,” Bruce explained of the decision, noting that he started working full time at the family business back in 1967 alongside his father. “Gladys and I have lived in the community and worked in the community for most of our lives. The timing is right,” he said. Peace of mind with the closure of the store didn’t diminish what will be lost, however. The family was quick to thank the many customers who have frequented the business over the years. “I’ll miss the people, and the customers, and the friendships that have been made,” Bruce said. Bruce and Gladys' son Robert will continue his volunteer work at Nagambie HealthCare. Currently he volunteers three half days per week. “He loves going up there to help out, you won’t keep him away from there,” said Gladys.

FW Parris is an historical landmark, by all means, but the people who run this business are wonderful. Like many customers at the store, the community is pleased that Bruce and Gladys will get to enjoy more time for themselves, but life at the ‘Parris End’ of Nagambie won’t be the same without them. The closing of the store is a big loss for the town and a big loss for the community. They’re down-to-earth. They’re friendly. They know what they’re doing. The majority of the customers, they probably know them by name. The property has been purchased by Damian Sanderson of John Sanderson Machinery and Rebecca Baker of Rebecca Baker Pharmacy. Damian Sanderson, has frequented FW Parris and Son for decades and echoed the bittersweet sentiments. “It’s been in their family a long time, and we are honoured to be moving into the premises,” said Damian. “It’s a local, small business. They have served the community well and I wish them all the best.” “Bruce will still be on site carting machinery and wool. Bruce has carted all our machinery

from Melbourne for the last 30 years and we are grateful he will continue to do so,” said Damian. Rebecca Baker Pharmacy will relocate to the premises in 2021. Rebecca is excited to be moving to bigger premises to offer an expanded range of products and services. “The new premise offers an exciting opportunity to expand our offering. We have outgrown our current space and look forward to what 2021 brings,” said Rebecca. There are hardware stores like the big chains but you can’t go to a big chain and always get some advice, some input that’s factual and good, and that is what FW Parris has offered. From the business network of Nagambie, we thank the Parris family for their contribution to the community and wish them good health and the very best. Enjoy the new chapter of your life Bruce, Gladys and Robert, you have served your community proud.

AVENEL ACTION GROUP STARTS FUNDING DRIVE FOR PIANO After a successful application to Bendigo Bank’s Community Enterprise Foundation, the Avenel Action Group has started a funding drive to top up the successful grant. Nagambie branch of Bendigo Bank awarded the group $8,000 for the project to provide a digital grand piano for the Avenel War memorial Hall. The targeted piano (a Roland P609) will cost approximately $12,500 delivered to the hall, therefore a top-up of $4,500 will be required. A local grazing property, Booroola, has generously offered to match community donations dollar for dollar up to $2,250. The Action Group needs to come up with $2,250 to reach the $4,500 top-up target. The project was initiated by Fleur Smith, to replace the current piano, which is around 100 years old. Fleur is a well-known local music teacher and music therapist, who has been instrumental in arranging concerts for local students and the community, including Carols by Candlelight.

Just as our Melbourne friends miss regional Victoria, the country folk miss the city just as much. Riversmith shares a glimpse of Melbourne like no other. Large granite purse-like object, designed as a seat located in the Bourke Street mall outside the old GPO. In January 1994, the City of Melbourne called for design submissions for unique

and distinctive forms of street seating. Simon Perry’s The Public Purse was one of the works selected. This piece was commissioned as part of the council's Percent for Art Program, in which one per cent of the council's capital works budget went towards funding public artworks, with the goal of integrating public art into the design and development of the city. In creating The Public Purse, Perry was interested in making an object that would work both conceptually and poetically,

while still addressing the context of the site. The Public Purse engages with its environment through its clear reference to the commercial nature of the area. Perry says of this red-granite sculpture that it ‘signifies an interaction between the city and citizens, the public and the private’. Looking like nothing less than an oversized dropped purse, this public seating can be located anywhere in the retail district without ever looking out of place.

She and the action group have a vision of Avenel as a music/arts hub in the future, to serve the surrounding towns and communities. With Fleur’s contacts in the music industry and the enthusiasm of the local community, the plan is to start an era of musical entertainment for the area, including concerts using local talent and having bands of different musical styles perform in Avenel War Memorial Hall. A bank account has been established at Bendigo Bank specifically for donations. Alternatively, cash donations can be made at the Avenel Pharmacy in Queen St. Ask the friendly staff.

MANGALORE FLORA WALK Mangalore Nature Conservation Reserve sits beside the Goulburn Valley Freeway. After initially losing 1.5ha from its western side to the construction of the freeway, it has been re-endowed and more than compensated. An addition of 14ha bushland from landholdings on the eastern boundary was made. Surprisingly, the freeway noise is relatively mute.

At 78ha, the Reserve is not a huge space. However, this area has been enough for it to qualify as an eBird hotspot where 155 species have been observed and recorded. It is also home to many flora and fauna species, including several that are threatened such as the swift parrot, brush-tailed phascogale, squirrel glider, bush stone-curlew and shiny wallaby-grass. Hope to observe any one of these. Also keep your eyes and ears open for

woodland birds with statewide diminishing populations such as Gilbert’s Whistler and the Hooded Robin. The 3.5km network of good quality tracks is distributed to make the most of a low rising forested site that squats above the undulating Goulburn River flood plains. The site is consistent with the drier of the lower slopes and plains of mainland eastern Australia adjacent to the Great Dividing Range. The soil is sandy clay based and littered with quartz pebble. The roadside vegetation experienced along the freeway and Mangalore Rd extends into and improves significantly inside the Reserve. It consists of a Grey Box (Eucalyptus microcarpa) dominated canopy of grassy woodlands and native grasslands. The large, old gums provide plenty of hollows and, along with the light understorey, an excellent range of habitats are provided for in this compact area. The Reserve is also home to flora protected on Crown Land such as Gold Dust Wattle (Acacia acinacea).

The ground layer is open and home to numerous indigenous perennials. At any time of year wildflowers are to be found. In spring there is a profusion of species. Orchid beds are a key feature. In autumn and winter the fungi are worth a visit of their own. Birdlife to be on the lookout for: Swift Parrots, Painted Buttonquail, Jacky Winter, Black-chinned Honeyeaters, Dusky Wood Swallow, Black-faced Cuckoo Shrike, White-browed Babbler, White-plumed Honeyeaters, White-browed Wood Swallows, White-backed Swallows, Striated Pardalotes, White-winged Chough, Noisy Miners, Eastern Rosellas, Crested Shrike-tits, Whitebellied Cuckoo Shrikes, Brown Treecreepers, Gang Gang Cockatoos and Raptors. Flora to be on the lookout for: Native grevillias, acacias, orchids, daisies, lilies, grasses and herbs. Fauna to be on the be on the lookout for: Yellow-footed antechinus, echidna, goannas, eastern grey kangaroos and wallabies

COVID CLEAN PROGRAM NOW CARRIES GLOBAL TICK 2200 tourism businesses Australia-wide have directly engaged with the COVID Clean Practicing Business Program since the COVID pandemic took hold.

Developed through ATIC’s Quality Tourism Framework almost 1000 businesses (940 +) are now recognised as COVID Clean under the national program. In further updates, ATIC has announced its COVID Clean Practicing Business Program has been recognised through the World Travel & Tourism Council’s Safe travels stamp. ATIC General Manager Erin McLeod said

the COVID Clean Program highlighted to travellers and stakeholders how so many tourism operators were now taking the right COVID safe steps

“The tourism industry is showing the resilience and capacity to lead the way and embrace health and safety requirements necessary to provide consumer confidence to travel,” Ms McLeod said. “The strong response and participation by industry in the COVID Clean Program is testimony to its practicality and attractiveness for tourism businesses wanting to show COVID-clean operations. “As domestic borders re-open, confidence to visit interstate destinations is aided by local tourism product’s ability to present

how traveller’s health and safety is a top and critical priority."

ATIC Executive Director Simon Westaway said the WTTC Safe travels stamp was recognition that ATIC’s COVID Clean Program reflected an important need within the international visitor market. “The carried global stamp can underpin confidence for returning travellers, that includes interstate holiday activity before our international border tries to reopen,” Mr Westaway said. “By global standards Australia is an emerging COVID clean destination. But industry believes we must powerfully signal that ‘Safe travels’ be effectively messaged to returning overseas markets.

“This includes travel wholesalers selling Australia and those seeking safe travels down under.” The WTTC ‘Safe travels’ stamp is provided upon completion of the COVID Clean Practicing Business module - https:// qualitytourismaustralia.com/home/ covid19clean/ The ‘Safe travels’ stamp is provided upon completion of the COVID Clean Practising Business module. Nagambie PRIMARY SCHOOL

NAGAMBIE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Mr. French is having a paws writing this week’s column and he has asked me if I could write a tail or two to let you know what has been happening at Nagambie PS. I told him I have four paws so no problem although I only have one tail so I’ll have to keep it short. It was so great to welcome back our wonderful students to Term 4. I couldn’t wait to tell them what I had been doing during the school holidays. Poppy and

I have had such fun at home with my puppies. We played tug of rope and we also took them to the vet clinic before they went to their new homes. I hope they all grow up to be Therapy Dogs and work at schools like Poppy and I because we have a wonderful time with all of the children at Nagambie PS. Bye for now, love Blossom x

ST JOSEPH'S PRIMARY SCHOOL Welcome back to term 4. We are so glad that we are back in the classroom this term. The children are happy to be back and working in the classroom with their friends. Here are some of their comments: “It is just better being at school!” Bas “I like it better at school as there is more of an education and the teacher can explain things better to me so that I understand it. At school you have to be there but at home, I can skip lessons or sleep all day.” Deanna “I think it’s great being back!” Maddie “I really enjoy being back at school!” - Gabby “My family were driving me ‘nuts’ at home, so it is great to be back at school!” - Grace “I love being at school with my friends and teachers!” - Addysin “I love being able to play with my

friends!” - Oliver M “It is much better being at school because at home I finished my work early and there was nothing to do and I get to see my friends now!” James “I can talk with my friends at school and at home my parents were busy so it was boring and I had no-one to talk to. School is better!” - Abdullah

AVENEL PRIMARY SCHOOL It has been a fabulous start to the week as we have welcomed all students back on site at Avenel Primary School. The classrooms have been full of keen learners with lots of enthusiasm while the yard has been loud with lots of excited noise as playtimes as everyone gets to see their friends again. We are all hoping that we can continue onsite learning for the rest of the year.

Extra cleaning is occurring in the middle of the day to provide extra protection for the toilet block and high touch areas around the school. Finally, I ask everyone to continue with the great work they are doing in keeping children at home even if they have the mildest cold or flu symptoms. This is crucial advice from DET and we appreciate everyone following through.

We know that there are rules in place from the school under DET guidelines, and I would like to thank everyone who is following the protocols so we minimise the risk of any transmission in the community. We are continuing to implement good hygiene practices at school. Students are washing their hand with soap and water before they eat, and using hand sanitiser every time they enter a new building in the school - for example, after a break or attending a specialist class.

We are really excited about the ability to have camps in term 4 under the current guidelines. The 3/4s will have a camp to Alexandra Adventure Resort, while the 5/6s will be travelling to Anglesea. It is always a busy time of the year, and in these unusual circumstances heading towards Christmas, please see me if you need to arrange a payment plan. With these unique times, I will be happy to work out a plan with you so that your child doesn’t miss out on camp.

DIGGING WITH DAVE

BY DAVE ANDREWS

HIDDEN ‘GEMS’ SECRET GARDENS! Well this week's tour was a complete surprise and delight, it is amazing what you can find if you get out and about. While pounding the pavement delivering pamphlets, I came across an area that I had driven past many times, as you no doubt have, but I was oblivious too. The ‘village’ of 46 permanent/relocatable homes just south of town, held a number of delightful and well-thought out gardens, that complimented the very impressive little homes. They were all neat, clean and obviously cared for. Some had a smaller floor plan and others were three bedrooms. All had lovely little front balconies and I said ‘gidday’ to several of the residents, who were enjoying themselves, relaxing amongst the greenery. All were very positive about their little part

of the world and why wouldn’t you be, with such variety and colour to be immersed in. I spoke to Wendy and Wes in the main office, who gave me the run-down of what went on behind the main gate. All owner/ occupied, minimum age of 55 years, to keep it a like-minded community..the parties are not too wild! There is a site fee which takes care of water and there are NO rates, oh to be so lucky! You do pay for your power and gas if fitted, but that’s about it. Plenty to do, or not, as you like. The large Recreational Room houses a full size billiard table, large screen for ‘footy’ etc, gym gear if you want to get sweating, two indoor bowls strips, books, CD’s for music, kitchen etc, etc., and all very neat and organised. There is also a good-looking 25 metre pool, for the summer

months, which are upon us, although the recent rains and bracing winds make me question if we will ever get out of winter. Lots of fun to be had all year round on site, with Xmas in July, Easter festivities, Melbourne Cup fashions and sweeps, Grand Finals etc. The bowls fire-up three days a week and there are craft afternoons, to get that quilt finished, plenty going on if you are keen. Now I’ve got lost in the infrastructure, so better get back to the gardens, which are quite stunning. All are kept up by residents and some have done a beautiful job. Seen in the pictures are some really gorgeous plants/trees and the colours just burst out at you. It is a really pretty place and there were plenty of

native birds enjoying it too. Just about all of the permanent/relocatable homes are made locally by Neatline in Shepp. The homes are yours and you can pick up and go, should you be seeking a warmer climate. What I like is the secure nature of the village, you can lock the door and head to the airport or hit the road for an extended period, and not worry about what’s happening at home. I know if I’m away even a few days, your mind turns to home and it affects your holiday somewhat. Anyway, enough dribble from me, please enjoy the pictures, and thank you Wendy and Wes for a lovely little interlude during my day. Cheers and have a great week.

AVENEL BOWLS On a glorious Spring day, with almost a full compliment of members, Avenel Bowls Club held the season 2020/21 launch last Sunday. After such a long off season, the buzz around the club was infectious as friends reconnected. The green and surrounds were picture perfect thanks to a lot of hard work by George and Spud and a few fellow members over the last few weeks. Chairman Geoff Hateley opened the proceedings welcoming members back. A minute silence was observed for Maria DeMaron, a much loved and valued club member who passed away in June. As the Presentation night was cancelled due to Covid, last season’s club Chairman, Spud Furletti presented the awards for the club champions of season 2019/20. Congratulations once again to the winners: Noel Slater (Men’s Champion) Pam Pedder (Ladies Champion) Charlie Kemp and Brett McDonald (Men’s Pairs Champions) Rob Kemp (Men’s 100 up Champion) Club stalwarts, Iris Sidebottom and Len Underwood rolled down the first kitty and the first bowl of the new season, and then it was game on as 3 games of six ends were

played for bragging rights as first winners for the new season. This honour went to Rob Kemp (s) Roy Cooper, Jenny Furletti and Bill Donovan winning 3 games. Runners up on a count back were Grace Kenworthy (s) Graeme Toy, Jason Toy and Fay Hateley who won two games. In the late afternoon sunshine, all bowlers enjoyed a delicious al fresco afternoon tea. Thank you to Jenny and her helpers for the preparation of the homemade goodies. The hours for the Sunday Chicken Run have been extended. Please be there at 9.40am to put your name down for a 10am start. Play will go through to 12.30pm. A full-scale practice match has been organised at Shepparton Park on Saturday 24 October from 12.30pm between Shepparton Park and Euroa. Please check notice board for all the details and add your name to the list if you wish to play. NB: We will be home in time for the AFL grand final! Photo 1. Situation fluid. So much for the information in the last edition, in this covid season situations change regularly. The Shepparton Cricket Association had to alter the start dates for the season so at this stage the season will commence in all senior and junior grades on the weekend of November 7. All senior grades will play one day matches only whilst the composition of the junior draw is still to be decided. Training for the senior teams is Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5-00 pm. The under 12 team practice session is on Monday at 5-00 pm, the under 16's train on Wednesday at 5-00pm with the under 14 side training on Friday at 5-00pm. The under 10 training is to be decided. Other changes for this season; players have to scan in and out when attending training or playing matches, clubrooms and change rooms subject to density limits. Hopefully restrictions may ease prior to the season opening. A junior registration day is planned for the morning of Saturday October 31st with a senior intra club practice match in the afternoon. Further details will be available in the next edition of the paper and on the clubs Facebook page
