NEW COUNCIL ON THE WAY FOR STRATHBOGIE SHIRE In a year like no other, the 2020 local government council elections will see all but one, elected Councillors of the 2016 election not nominating for re-election in the 2020 Strathbogie Shire elections.
Ms Bower and Ms Stothers announced their resignation from council in 2019, Councillor Little, Councillor Gardner, Councillor Mason, and Councillor Thomson, and Councillor McClaren will not be nominating for re-election. Councillor Williams is yet to decide on whether or not he will stand. Councillor Raeburn will nominate for re-election after winning the HoneySuckle Creek in a by election earlier this year. The Community Voice caught up with Lake Nagambie Ward Councillor, Mayor Amanda McClaren who will not stand in the upcoming Local Government Elections for Strathbogie Shire. Cr McClaren made the announcement today, saying she was proud of the achievements she had made during her four years on Council and urging others to put up their hand to represent “our amazing community”. Cr McClaren was first elected onto Strathbogie Shire Council along with Cr Debra Bower to represent Lake Nagambie Ward in 2016. Shortly after being elected, Councillors elected Cr McClaren to the role of Mayor, a
role she was proud to take on and represent the Council and community. Following three years of her mayoral term Cr McClaren was awarded Emeritus Mayor status by the Municipal Association of Victoria in 2019.
all of whom work very hard for their community,” Cr McClaren said.
Cr McClaren was the youngest female Mayor to be elected in Strathbogie Shire and she is the only Mayor in Strathbogie Shire’s history to serve an entire four year council term as Mayor.
Cr McClaren said it was a difficult decision for her and not one she has taken lightly.
During her term on Council she has attended hundreds of meetings with the community, businesses and with Victorian and Australian Government Ministers as well as our local members. As Council spokesperson she has undertaken more than 40 television interviews, 50 radio interviews and provided information to our community through countless social media video clips. “I have given the role 110 per cent over the past four years, it has been a privilege to serve our Strathbogie Shire community alongside my fellow Councillors,
“Those who know me well, know that I have worked 24/7 in this role and after four years this has had an impact.”
“After four years representing the Strathbogie Shire and the Lake Nagambie Ward, I have taken the difficult decision not to stand for Council elections again in 2020,” she said. “I had already made the decision that if re-

elected I would not be putting up my hand for the position of Mayor again as I believe it is definitely time for a change, however family and business commitments mean I am now not going to stand for Lake Nagambie Ward in the upcoming October 2020 Local Government elections. “My sons are growing fast and our business is also growing and requiring a lot more of my time and focus, so I am putting my family and our family business first, they have supported me over the past four years and now it’s time for me to focus on them. 2 | THE COMMUNITY VOICE | ISSUE 458 “I would like to sincerely thank the Lake Nagambie Ward community for electing me to represent them in 2016. It has been a privilege and honour to serve our Lake Nagambie and Shire community.” Cr McClaren is the first to admit, the role has not been without its challenges. These have included but are not limited to; Natural Disasters including bushfires, floods, a localised storm cell through Avenel and Violet Town, a Victorian Auditor General audit into fraud and corruption controls, changes to federal electorate boundaries, managing service needs of a growing population while being sensitive to the fact we have high rates, a CEO resignation and the recruitment of a new CEO. When asked if she would run again for Local Government in the future, Cr McClaren has not ruled out running again in the future. “I learnt many years ago you should never say never, and that if you feel you can contribute to your community in a positive way then you should put your hand up,” Cr McClaren said. Cr McClaren wished all the candidates in the upcoming Local Government Elections the best for their campaign and said she hoped new Councillors enjoyed their role and the opportunity to represent the Lake Nagambie Ward community. She also thanked community clubs and volunteers for all the work that they do.
“It is impossible to list everyone who should be acknowledged and thanked for their support as I fear I would inadvertently miss some one, and I appreciate all the volunteer efforts that go into keeping our town active and vibrant as Nagambie flourishes,” she said. “Nagambie is certainly moving ahead and the growth we are experiencing is definitely going against the trend in regional Victoria. I sincerely thank the Lake Nagambie Ward community for electing me in 2016, it has been an honour and a privilege to serve you.” For anyone interested in standing for the Lake Nagambie Ward in the upcoming Local Government elections on 24 October 2020 please visit www.strathbogie.vic.gov.au for more information.

“The people coughing, the people gasping for air - it was terrifying.” Sam was admitted to the COVID ward, struggling to breathe, to the sound of others around him coughing and gasping for air. One by one, he watched patients get taken into negative pressure rooms, sealed off by multiple doors, with no support network. As a healthcare worker who’s now recovering at home, Sam’s hope is that in this fight against coronavirus, we all understand that we are the front line. We all have a part to play by staying home to help stop the spread of the virus. If you have symptoms - please get tested. Payments of $450 are available to help you stay home and wait for your test result.

NATIONAL THANK A COP DAY Let’s take a moment to remember what police do every day and how they would feel to have people give them a genuine thank- you. The special day during ‘Police Week’ to ‘Thank A Cop’ is on the 19th September. It is a chance to recognise and appreciate an over stretched, often abused, overworked, and somewhat underappreciated group of individuals, in any positive way you see fit. Each state has acknowledged, offered support or encouraged the day as a worthwhile community initiative but the sincere thanks of a local community cannot be overlooked. It is your opportunity to personally thank each and everyone of them. Just a simple thank you as you pass by them doing their job will be greatly appreciated and received.
HOT NEW FIRE STATION In what has been labelled as great news for the area and something that has been a long time coming, the new Nagambie CFA Station is finally up and running.
The $1.4 million construction of the modern facility is complete and replaces the outdated Vine Street station. The areas serviced by the Nagambie CFA have changed significantly since the Vine Street station was built and the new fire station will now cater for the changed landscape which includes more commercial buildings, residential estates, and a growing population.
Valerie Rose Monigatti ~
Thank you to everyone for all the cards flowers and kind expressions of sympathy. Your support at this difficult time was very much appreciated and a nice comfort to our families. Deirdre & Darron Muir
"The surrounding areas continue to grow, which require different firefighting methods that the new station will be better able to meet,” said Nagambie CFA Captain, Allen Treble. The current Nagambie firefighters have been involved in the design process to ensure the station would meet their needs, taking into consideration the current and projected growth of Nagambie. The station is based at the southern end of High Street creating
better access to emergencies in and out of town. “The station has the capacity for expansion, which means we can increase the number of volunteer firefighters onsite, introduce a junior training program and accommodate for population growth and changes to the landscape," said Allen. “Our volunteer firefighters now have access to modern facilities and the latest emergency management equipment.” said Allen. The new station will make operations safer and more efficient for members. It features male and female turnout rooms, and upgraded meeting spaces and amenities. There’s an office, local command facility, kitchen, rear storage shed, off street parking, full concrete rear yard and pergola area. Captain Treble said the station provides space to train new and existing members without having to go offsite. “We didn’t have the room to be training at the Vine Street station. We can now streamline everything we do and hopefully attract more members,” he said.
Mr Treble advised drivers and pedestrians around the new location to be aware that from now on you may see CFA vehicles entering High Street with emergency lights activated. “As a driver on Victorian roads you are required to give way to emergency vehicles displaying red and blue flashing lights and or sirens, and we ask the community of Nagambie to be mindful of the changes,” said Allen. The brigade is always looking to recruit new members and they seek a wide range of skills to suit the varying positions. “There are many positions behind the scenes. The CFA is more than just fighting fires,” finished Allen. Nagambie CFA's captain Allen Treble thanked the Nagambie community for their ongoing support of the brigade and the Victorian Government for providing the funding for the project.

WORKING TOGETHER CREATES BETTER DECISIONS Strathbogie Shire Council will at its Ordinary Council meeting on Tuesday, September 15, 2020 consider a Draft Community Local Law No.2 that shows how working with the community means better decisions for our municipality. A total of 66 submissions were received on Council’s Draft Community Local Law No.2, more than 20 people attended online sessions to provide their thoughts and advice and Council officers had about 80 one-on-one phone discussions. Strathbogie Shire Mayor Cr Amanda McClaren said through this feedback, Council had made several significant changes from the draft document released for community Consultation. She said the Community Local Law No.2 aimed to ensure the safety of the community and protect its amenity. “This is a seriously important document for Council because it protects the amenity of our Shire,” Cr McClaren said. “We are so lucky to live in such a special place and to call Strathbogie Shire home.” Changes included in the Community Local Law No.2 which will be considered by Council include: • The removal of the permit to move stock within the Shire, while safety requirements continue. • The removal of a permit requirement to launch drones from Council-managed land. • The clarification that a requirement to remove (pick up) animal excrement applies to domestic animals in townships. • The removal of a permit requirement to use shipping containers for agricultural use in the farming zone, proving they are appropriately screened or located, and; • The removal of a permit requirement to busk in our Shire. “Council doesn’t create these local laws to make it hard on our residents. They are not designed to restrict activities or stymie creativity,” Cr McClaren said. “This local law is about making sure activities are carried out safely and people living in our Shire are protected. “More than this, it is about protecting the amenity and beauty of our municipality.” Upon adoption the new Community Local Law No.2 - the Strathbogie Shire Council Community Local Law No. 6 (2010) will be repealed.
BENDIGO BANK RETURNS $47,500 TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY THROUGH 2020 GRANTS PROGRAM The Nagambie branch of Bendigo Bank will return a total of $47,500 to Nagambie and Avenel communities with the announcement of their 2020 Community Grants program recipients. Branch Manager Michael Prowse said that the Community Bank was thrilled to be able to return such a large sum to the local community this year and spoke about the power of Community Banking. “The only reason that we have these funds available is because of our loyal customer base. It really is as simple as the more people we have banking with us, the more funds we will have available for projects such as these.” Mr. Prowse said. This year’s program sees 5 local community groups receive funding towards their projects. The Avenel Action Group will receive $8,000 towards a digital grand piano to be used by the community at the Avenel Memorial Hall. “The Avenel Action Group is delighted at the Bendigo Bank grants outcome. We will need to raise a further $4500 to contribute towards the purchase of the piano, but a well known property in Avenel, Booroola, will match dollar for dollar to $2,250. That is, they will contribute half the top up, providing we can raise the other half of the funds,” said John Hyland from the Avenel Action Group. “We intend to develop an arts/music program in Avenel, using local artists and
imported musicians. We are very excited and enthusiastic about using the new piano to assist students as well, as we have an excellent music teacher in Fleur Smith living in the community. We are looking forward to the future as we believe the new piano has the potential to help assimilate newcomers and improve the sense of community in our town,” said John.
making it safer for all concerned,” said Brendan Dalrymple, Nagambie Mens Shed member.
Nagambie Lakes Tourism and Commerce will receive $25,000 towards the restoration of the town’s war memorial.
Each group recently presented their projects at an online ‘Pitch the Community’ session, which was attended by over 50 members of the community. After the event the community was able to vote for their favourite project with the Goulburn Region Pre-school Association being the lucky recipients of the $250 ‘People’s Choice’ awards with over 100 votes.
“The Nagambie War Memorial and Cenotaph had its last significant upgrade in the 1960s. The RSL are proud to be working with Go Nagambie to deliver this project and thank the Bendigo Bank for their generous contribution, without their assistance this project wouldn’t be achievable” said Larry King, President of the Nagambie RSL. The Nagambie Community Carols will produce a YouTube Advent Calendar with the help of $1,500. The Nagambie Lakes Men’s Shed will build a new small storage shed with the contribution of $3,000. “The BBQ trailer will have its own shed which frees up the Mens Shed workplace,
Goulburn Region Pre-school Association has received a commitment of a $10,000 Challenge Grant if they are able to raise the remaining funds for their playground project at the Avenel Kindergarten.
Mr. Prowse thanked the community for their involvement in this year’s Community Grants program and encouraged anyone looking to make a difference in the community to pop in and discuss their banking with one of the Team. The Nagambie branch of Bendigo Bank is located at Shop 1/263 (across from IGA) and is open Monday to Friday 10am to 3pm. They can be contacted on (03) 5794 2565.

REPORT A CONFIRMED COVID-19 DIAGNOSIS If a COVID-19 diagnosis happens at work, it's important to make sure that people are safe. An obligation to notify On 28 July 2020, temporary regulations were approved under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (OHS Act) that specify when employers and self-employed persons must notify WorkSafe of a confirmed diagnosis of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the workplace. Failure to notify WorkSafe can result in a penalty.
When to notify WorkSafe Employers and self-employed persons, with management or control of a workplace must notify WorkSafe immediately after becoming aware that: an employee, independent contractor, employee of the independent contractor or self-employed person has received a confirmed diagnosis of coronavirus (COVID-19) and the employee, independent contractor, employee of the independent contractor or self-employed person has attended the workplace within the relevant infection period. An employer will be considered to be 'aware' of the incident when they have been notified of the confirmed diagnosis by either the employee, independent contractor, employee of the independent contractor, or by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Notification is not required when a person's workplace is their home, and that person has not attended any other workplace over which their employer has management or control of, within the relevant infection period.
The infectious period under these regulations, is the period of time between: the date, being 14 days prior to the onset of symptoms consistent with coronavirus (COVID-19) or a confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) diagnosis (whichever comes first), and the day on which the person receives a clearance from isolation from DHHS. A confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) diagnosis means a person has undergone a diagnostic procedure and has received a positive result for coronavirus (COVID-19), also known as 'novel coronavirus 2019'.
How to notify A coronavirus (COVID-19) notifiable incident in the workplace requires immediate notification to WorkSafe by either: Option A: Completing the COVID-19 reporting form COVID-19 reporting form Report a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis in your workplace. Option B: Calling WorkSafe on 13 23 60 WorkSafe will then record details of your incident and send you an email with a unique link for you to complete the last stage of notifying us of the full details in writing. It is mandatory that you complete the full details in writing within 48 hours.
Duty to preserve incident sites Generally, there is a requirement under the OHS Act to preserve the site of a notifiable
incident. However, you are not required to do so if there is a need to: protect the health and safety of a person aid an injured person involved in the incident or take essential action to make the site safe or to prevent further occurrence of an incident. If a person with a confirmed diagnosis of coronavirus (COVID-19) has attended the workplace during the infectious period, it is essential the site is cleaned and disinfected, in order to prevent further transmission of the virus. Therefore, the requirement to preserve the incident site does not apply after a confirmed diagnosis of coronavirus (COVID-19). Employers should follow any advice or direction provided by DHHS when a confirmed case of coronavirus (COVID-19) has been identified.
Who is required to notify WorkSafe? The duty to notify WorkSafe of incidents applies if you are: an employer, who has management or control of a workplace a selfemployed person, who has management or control of a workplace. An 'employer' is defined in the OHS Act as a person who employs one or more other persons under contracts of employment or contracts of training. This definition covers an individual, a company, body corporate, partnership, unincorporated association, franchising
operation or not-for-profit organisation, in the private or public sector who has one or more employees. A 'self-employed' person is defined in the OHS Act as a person, other than an employer, who works for gain or reward otherwise than under a contract of employment or training. The employer or self-employed person, who has management or control of a workplace where a notifiable incident has occurred, is under a legal duty to notify WorkSafe of that incident. This legal duty to notify does not apply to a manager or supervisor or any other staff member of the employer. Whilst a manager, supervisor or other staff member may be delegated the task of reporting an incident, the ultimate legal responsibility rests with the employer.
Failure to comply Failure to comply with the reporting requirements in the OHS Act can lead to fines (for each offence) of up to: $39,652.80 for individuals* $198,264.00 for companies* *Subject to variation depending on the value of a penalty unit.

Go Nagambie and the Nagambie RSL have joined forces to restore the Nagambie War Memorial and Cenotaph. The Nagambie War Memorial and Cenotaph had its last significant upgrade in the 1960s. Despite being well maintained, forces of nature and time itself have resulted in the War Memorial requiring significant restoration works. “The Nagambie RSL were discussing possible restoration works to the memorial, so when we were approached by Go Nagambie offering their support, the timing was perfect,” said Larry King, President of Nagambie RSL. Both organisations met with the landscape architect and the concept drawings were
developed.
Restoration and renovation of key infrastructure within the War Memorial precinct:
•
•
Improvement of aesthetic appeal of the War Memorial will attract all generations
•
Greater accessibility for people with disabilities and families
•
Planting of species of significance to the region and history
“The entire community stands to benefit from this project as the War Memorial represents a pivotal place of cultural significance to all residents and remains the key landmark of the town,” said John Beresford of Go Nagambie.

The outcome of the project will deliver:
•
“We are excited about the vision that has been put forward and thank the Bendigo Bank and Go Nagambie for their commitment to this project,” said Larry. Located in the Nagambie central business district, the Memorial is considered the centre-piece landmark in the heart of the town commemorating local fallen service men and women from the Great War, WW2, Korea and Vietnam.
Improved experience for people attending commemorative services
Increased community knowledge about the local history and purpose of the memorial.
Visitors to the town will benefit with the provision of a welcoming access to view plaques and memorials. This project will benefit all sectors of the community and it will be one to be proud of. The project will be administered and managed by Go Nagambie in partnership with Nagambie RSL.

STAND AND DELIVER FOR YOUR COMMUNITY Strathbogie Shire is seeking diverse and passionate representation from individuals committed to their community. Could you be exactly what your community needs in 2020 and beyond? Nominations for the upcoming local government elections must be lodged before 12noon on Tuesday, 22 September. So, if you’ve ever thought about contributing more for your community, now is the time to put your plan into action. Sitting on council offers an incredible opportunity to create meaningful, longlasting change through providing leadership across many local issues and services. Councillors take a stand on decisions and planning for sporting and recreation facilities, or for libraries and local roads. They also provide input into decisions related to maternal health and childcare services, rubbish and recycling, and infrastructure essential for local amenity. Strathbogie Shire Chief Executive Officer Julie Salomon said standing for council presents a chance to give back to your community. “Being on council is a way to become actively involved in your community, while providing
a clear and strong voice for your fellow citizens,” Ms Salomon said. “We strongly encourage all those who are considering to stand, or who have ever thought about standing, to nominate before the deadline. “We want to hear voices from all cross-sections and backgrounds of our municipality. We want your unique qualities on council.”
Talking to a councillor in your area may help you to understand the role and the required commitment. Before lodging a nomination, candidates are required to have completed the mandatory online candidate-training.
Elections and safety during Covid-19 pandemic
Potential candidates may be surprised to learn they already possess many qualities required to represent their community at local government level. For example, skills such as public speaking, business acumen, leadership and budgeting are highly regarded.
The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) has confirmed elections will be held statewide through postal vote only, due do the Covid-19 pandemic. Through its COVIDSafe Election Plan, the VEC has also announced a series of measures to ensure the 24 October election will be safe and accessible for all participants, while complying with state and federal regulations.
On a regular basis, councillors are required to attend meetings, participate in civic events and can be called on to inspect planning or infrastructure projects.
While the plan will remain subject to change in the lead-up to the election, the VEC is taking steps to ensure the safety of all participants in the election process.
While there are significant time commitments, there are options available to allow you to work flexibly; including for full-time employees and working-parents.
For more details on the 2020 local government election, visit www. strathbogieshire.vic.gov.au or www.vec.vic. gov.au

HUGHES CREEK BRIDGE, AVENEL The town of Avenel is steeped in history. "Avenel Run" Pastoral Holding 60,000 acres was taken up by Henry Kent Hughes in 1838 and named after his former property "Avenel" in England. Hughes also gave his name to the creek running through the property. The Hughes Creek Bridge on the Hume Highway at Avenel was erected in 1859 by the Board of Land and Works, and replaced a timber bridge erected in 1847. The contractor was Hugh Dalrymple. It is constructed in rusticated sandstone and comprises six segmental arches supported on piers. The restrictive width of the bridge resulted in the construction of a new bridge over Hughes Creek in 1970.
The Hughes Creek Bridge survives intact and shows little sign of structural decay. It is presently used solely for pedestrian traffic. The Historic Hughes Creek Bridge is perhaps better known for its association to Ned Kelly. At the age of 11, Ned rescued Richard Shelton who had fallen into the creek after trying to cross over on a tree bridge. The incident occurred only 150 metres downstream from the Bridge. A green silk cummerbund was awarded to Ned for his bravery by Richard's parents. Ned was wearing the cummerbund when he was captured at the Siege of Glenrowan.
By RiverSmith
This is a fine example of nineteenth century bridge design. It is superbly constructed and stands as a monument to the early stonemasons and road engineers of Victoria. It is well composed and articulated by rusticated voussoirs, imposts and string courses and is notable for its number of arches. The fine quality stone and stonework is a distinctive feature. The bridge is picturesquely situated in a park-like setting.
DIGGING WITH DAVE
BY DAVE ANDREWS
“CHICKEN OR THE EGG?” Well ‘viewers’, another challenging fortnight, locked down in ‘DefCom-3’. I am pleased to notice and say, that whilst getting around town and to the outer reaches to enact an ‘essential’ function, people are friendly, positive and getting on with life. When in the supermarket line, there’s almost a ‘box-on’ to see who can let someone else in, in front of them. I’ve never heard so many apologies from people for almost imaginary inconveniencing. Hopefully you have had similar experiences and are heartened, as I am. I am positive about the future as a result. So whatever footy team you follow, doesn’t matter, and I’m sure we will be a bit more resilient on the other side. That was a bit D & M, but I felt the need to get it out there. It may yet end up on the ‘cutting-room floor’. Well how can you do a gardening story that doesn’t involve you visiting a garden and speaking to the carers and creators of those gardens. I don’t have to tell you that gardens are amazing areas which give great pleasure and hold many different, interesting features. The theme this week is Chooks. What regional garden could be complete without chooks, and that errant rooster next door, that reminds us that dawn is upon us. We have one near us, but like the trains, I enjoy the familiar sound. I am in ‘egg-heaven’ at present, with four chooks giving us four eggs a day. Bartering in the Court we live in has never been better. However, this is a recent revelation, as our over-priced chooks, due
to the ‘toilet paper syndrome’, have decided to lay. You couldn’t buy a chook for love nor money at the beginning of the pandemic And we finally procured some at the high ransom of $25 ea! My first comment was, “they better lay golden #@*###@ eggs at that price”! I don’t know about you, but chooks give me a ‘calm’, like a young child, the missus (remember she likes being called that) and I are in competition to see who can feed the chooks first and bring in their bounty. And scraps, no more wastage, they see the yellow bucket and start darting about, like their headless, in anticipation. Much like the dogs tail-wagging, it brings a smile to the dial. Eggs, whatever way you like them are wonderful things. They are a very good source of inexpensive, high-quality protein. More than half the protein of an egg is found in the egg white, which also includes vitamin B2 and lower amounts of fat than the yolk. Eggs are rich sources of selenium, vitamin D, B6, B12 and minerals such as zinc, iron and copper. Now when you gather your eggs each morning, there is generally some poop and other delights, stuck to them. While you can brush off the obvious, DO NOT wash them. Apparently there is a membrane on the shell protecting the insides and you can push bacteria through in the process. They will stay fresher a lot longer and you can wash immediately before use if desired. Now talking of ‘poop’, our plants are appreciating the addition of it to the compost. Can be a bit strong for some plants if not broken up with soil, bark and other additives. For all you
backyard chicken keepers in the know, chook manure is a super ingredient for creating great compost. It’s readily available, free and environmentally friendly. Once composted, it is abundant in Nitrogen, Potassium and Phosphorus, and has good moisture retention, perfect for our dry summers. A chook shed is a very easy task for DYIers and you can repurpose all sorts of secondhand stuff you have lying about the yard and put it to good use. Do have a solid roof over the laying area and a bird net over the rest of the yard. TRUE STORY: we were finding golf Balls in our backyard, and it would have to be a Guinness Book of Records drive from the 5th hole at the NGC, to get to us. We were also losing eggs. They were being holed and left without contents, again around the backyard? The missus worked out that the crows were effectively exchanging golf balls for eggs, which may have been a fair exchange if either of us played golf! So, a covering of bird netting stopped the egg thefts and ball drops. Now that doesn’t solve the age-old question about the chicken and egg, the cartoon below doesn’t shed any light either. If you have been thinking getting some chooks, do. If you haven’t, do anyway. You’ll love’m. They are clean, no rats or other such vermin, I guess the dog earns his keep by warding off the foxes, and of course there is the bacon and eggs....Yum. Have a great fortnight.

The joy and value of reading “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” - Dr Seuss For all the additional focus on online learning, having more time with a real book is still one of the best learning experiences. During flexible and remote learning, some of my reading highlights have included: • Recording stories for our junior students, which are available at: http://www.nps.vic.edu.au/index. php?page=story-time-with-mr-french • A particular favorite was recording the

‘The Lion Inside’ with Avenel Principal Mr Davis. It’s a story about a mouse and lion, and between us we just happened to have those two costumes. Grade 2 reading superstars Eliza, Alexia and Amelia recording ‘The return of Thelma the unicorn’. Prep student Leticia giving me a beautiful drawing of Mr Percival after she read Storm Boy with her mum. Discussing ‘One hundred Australian cricketers’ with Grade 1 student Cooper.
ST JOSEPH'S PRIMARY SCHOOL Wow! It is hard to believe, but we have been learning from home for the past 6 weeks, and unfortunately it is not quite over yet! We now have next week and the first week after the holidays, to still complete remote learning. Our children have been very busy and have adapted really well to learning from home. They have completed a variety of schoolbased tasks, as well as learnt from the tasks that just ordinarily happen at home, like cooking, gardening, exercising and helping out.
Thank you to all the parents and carers for their hard work with remote learning. It has been another fabulous example of the great partnership between school and home. Remember it takes a village to raise a child. If you haven't decided where to send your child for the 2021 school year, St. Joseph’s school is open for after hours tours. Here are some more photos of our children working from home. Have a great holiday everyone! We will see all the students back at school on the 12th
Our 3 & 4 year old kindergarten programs have been enjoying learning about the lifecycle of a frog after Jess from joeys brought in some tadpoles. They have been engaging in lots of frog themed experiences aimed at extending our knowledge about frogs, and our tadpoles. Raelene sourced two fish tanks from her local community and kindly delivered a tank, and some tadpoles, into Wattle Room. We can't wait to watch them
grow into frogs. We learnt that we could be waiting another two months for the tadpoles to finish growing limbs! After our acknowledgement of country we spoke about Dreamtime stories, and listened to 'Tiddalik the Frog'. 2021 Enrolments for our Government funded three & four year old kindergartens are now open & places are filling up fast. Please jump onto www.grpsa.com.au to apply.
AVENEL PRIMARY SCHOOL The first week of term 4, commencing Monday 5th October, will be the last week of Remote Learning, as directed by DET. Students who have no option but to attend onsite will be able to do so, with the regulations the same as they currently are. The second week of term 4, will see all students commencing school onsite, on Monday 12th October. DET have advised that schools may stagger the return to school, but I am sure you will agree with us that we want all the students back at school as soon as possible. It was great to see so many students participating in “Crazy
Head Day” today organised by the Junior School Council. These days put a smile on everyone’s face and help with the daily challenges of Remote Learning. The combination of longer days, some more sunshine, warmer weather and the fact that we know have an end date are hopefully all contributing to everyone feeling a little better this week. It can be difficult, but I thank everyone for their positive attitude and remember that you can contact me or your child’s teacher if you need some extra support.

CAROLS’ COMMITTEE ARRANGING A YOUTUBE ADVENT CALENDAR Spring might just have sprung, but Christmas is coming, this year as well as last. Many things will of course be different. As this article is being written, we do not yet know if we will be able to see our loved ones or hug our family members. It is easy to feel discouraged at all the things which may not be, but at the Community House, we are trying to come up with alternative ways of bringing us together and celebrating. As part of the Nagambie Carol’s Committee, we are supporting and helping to organise a YouTube Advent Calendar. Never heard of one before? Neither have we, so this will most definitely be fun! Last year's Carols event, held at the NLCH and Tennis Club premises, was very popular. In spite of hot weather, the hour long program which took place on the 8th of December, seemed much appreciated and gathered over 150 people. The success should be attributed to some amazing local talents as well as the generous participation from the CFA, the Larks, the Lions and the Primary Schools. We believe events like these are important; they bring us together and help us celebrate. This year however, we will not be able to meet in person and that’s where the YouTube Advent Calendar comes into the picture. Every day, starting on the first of Advent leading up to Christmas, we will release a link to a short clip featuring different local talents and community organisation. The clips will have different content, but will
all aim at lifting our Christmas spirit and helping us celebrate. This project has also been the recipient of a grant from Bendigo Bank, which we are incredibly thankful for! “We are right now reaching out to different community groups, schools, organisations and Sports Clubs, asking if they would want to be part of one of our Advent episodes", Community House Coordinator Anna Close says. "They can read a poem, sing a song, do a craft or anything they like really, the sky is the limit!” “Just like with the Community Quilt, we are hoping this project will bring us together, even if we may not yet be able to see each other face to face,” Anna continues. So watch out everyone; Christmas is coming!
