FIREHAWK 1, A NEW TOOL ADDED TO THE KESTREL AVIATION AERIAL FIRE FIGHTING TOOLBOX Media and dignitaries were invited to Kestrel Aviation’s base at Mangalore to see the Firehawk 1 helicopter in action. Kestrel Aviation has been in partnership with Firehawk Helicopters for several years, with Firehawk 1 coming online this year as the first aircraft with an internal tank. Firehawk 1 will carry the designation ‘Helitak 125 when working on fires in Australia and will operate with a two man crew to operate the helicopter during fire season. The hawktank is able to be filled in approximately one minute, dramatically increasing its effectiveness in both capacities versus a bucket and time required between drops on fires. The Community Voice invited Aviation Spotters Online photographer and writer, Dave Soderstrom to report on the launch.

A significant expansion has occurred within the local aerial firefighting operators. Kestrel Aviation based at Mangalore has added their first type 1 helicopter. Arriving via boat in December 2020 from the USA N125FH a 1979 model UH60 Blackhawk converted to Firehawk status. Kestrel Aviation continues to invest in its Australian owned and operated business. With the introduction of Firehawk 1, the company will employ a second helicopter, named Firehawk 2 later in the year for deployment within Australia. If this wasn’t enough, Ray and Eleanor Cronin have also invested in an Airbus Super Puma which will arrive to be employed as a larger type 1 fire fighting helicopter that can also carry passengers. This tanked machine will be the first of its type to work in Australia in this role.

N125FH HISTORY Ordered by the United States Army, it was delivered as 79-23307. The machine was operated in its later life in a Medivac role with large red crosses on white backgrounds marked on the fuselage. Auctioned off after retirement from the Army initially sold to Brown Helicopter Inc as N796ZB. It then went to Brainerd Helicopters Inc from Leesburg International Airport becoming N125FH. Now named Firehawk 1, the machine will become a welcome

asset to aerial fire fighting within Australia.

KESTREL AND THE FIREHAWK Last fire season Kestrel brought two Firehawks N2FH and N9FH both owned by Firehawk to Australia. The machines were on contract in Victoria and Queensland respectively. N2FH has remained in Australia for this fire season and will return to the United States at the end. A second tank equipped Firehawk will return to Australia in lieu of this machine. Currently, in Australia, civilian operated UH60 Blackhawks are USA FAA registered and operated in the ‘restricted category’ or

‘experimental’ category. This prevents them from carrying any passengers and restricts them to carry essential crew only. This is hoped to be changed soon with the local regulator CASA working with local operators to change this. Most Blackhawks are typically fitted with a longline and firebombing bucket. Kestrel has also added an internal tank to N125FH. Making it the first internal tank operated Blackhawk in Australia. The tank allows for hover filling with its drop-down suction hose. The tank has a carrying capacity of 3500 Litres and is FAA and STC issued. Continued on page 3.

FIREHAWK, BHI, AND BRAINERD HELICOPTERS Founded in 1973 Brainerd Helicopters was the first commercial company to obtain and operate the Sikorsky Black Hawk and established the company Firehawk Helicopters Inc. to operate the fleet. The company today now operates nine Firehawks. Firehawk Helicopters has continued to develop the Blackhawk for fire operations over the years. In 2019 the company along with its subsidiaries announced a new internal tank for the Blackhawk fleet. The tank can be installed in Black Hawk helicopters without cutting or modifying the aircraft. Using the existing tie-down points on the Black Hawk are used to secure the tank in the aircraft. Leading Edge Composites designed and developed the tank system from a concept. This project took several years of development, R&D, prototyping, and manufacturing. The 15-foot snorkel can fill the tank in roughly 50 seconds when only the pump is under the water. In instances where there are deeper water sources and the snorkel can be further submerged into the water, the tank can be filled in about 40 seconds. Flight tests with the tank installed on the research and development aircraft (H-60X) began in September 2017, and it was tested through the spring of 2018. The tank has been successfully tested at the aircraft’s Vne of 193 knots. The tank will be flown at a speed of 160 knots. The potential to go as high as 175 knots which is the same speed as the bubble window is certified at.

With the long line and bucket fitted the pilot can fill 3500 liters of water from suitable water sources. The crew can also mix a measured quantity of fire fighting suppressant foam to increase the effectiveness of the load when it is dropped on a fire. The State Governments of Australia have contracted, through NAFC, four Sikorsky UH60 Blackhawk helicopters for the 2020-21 fire season. Strathbogie Shire residents are being asked to help shape our region’s future. During the next nine months Strathbogie Shire Council will be calling for the community to share its thoughts, feedback and advice to develop a Community Vision, Council Plan and Financial Plan. These important documents guide the work of Council over the coming years. Strathbogie Shire Mayor Cr Chris Raeburn said it was essential Council worked with the community to develop these plans. “This Council is committed to representing our community,” Cr Raeburn said. “We want to know that Council and our community share the same vision and are moving together towards a better future. “You will hear me say this a lot, but we can’t do this alone. “As a Council we’re only successful if we’re meeting our community needs, so we’re asking you to share your vision for the future and help set our focus to get there.” There will be several stages to the community engagement program and many opportunities for the community to have a say.

Council is kicking community engagement off with a series of face-to-face sessions its calling, Share Strathbogie. “We’re hitting the streets, heading to townships throughout the Shire to ask our community what they love about living in Strathbogie Shire and what would make it an even better place to live in the future,” Cr Raeburn said. “We’ll also be asking you for advice on what you might be able to live without.” For Council balancing service levels with liveability and cost is always a challenge. However, a sustainable financial future for Strathbogie Shire is non-negotiable. The first Share Strathbogie drop-in session will be held in Strathbogie at Community Hall on Tuesday, February 23. Mt Wombat Ward Councillor Laura Binks encouraged the Strathbogie community to drop-in at any time from 4pm to 6pm. “I encourage the community to put their creative thinking hats on. We want our community to think big and help us create a shared vision for our future,” Cr Binks said. “Together I am sure we can set a positive direction for Strathbogie Shire that makes our home and even better place to live.” Council will also be offering the opportunity for the community to have their say online and will soon be calling for people to put up their hand to be part of its first ever Community Forum. It has had a colourful past with many popular water based events based around Buckley Park such as the famous Park to Pub swim, canoe races, and some previous Festivals have included the Moomba Water Ski show, carnival amusements and much more. But this year NOW Co-ordinator Claire Sampson has taken over the reins from Andrea Richards, and I was decoded to organise the Festival under COVID safe restrictions. So it will be a smaller Festival because of that.

The weather has always been kind to the festival organisers and they are hoping it will be again this year from March 6.

The NOW organisers, volunteers, participants, patrons and entertainers will try to ensure that there will be plenty of activities and fun for all patrons on the day. On the day the format is a little different with most activities being held in the main street like the community market and the school art display. On the water craft hope to do a brisk trade and the highlight of the water activities will be from Buckley Park Rowing Club to Pub 1.1km swim will take place around midday. Spectators can have a great vantage point to view the start at the walk bridge near the Rowing Club or on the banks of the lake near the Rowing Club.

Swimmers of all ages will venture into the waters of the bowl of the lake to take part in the loop swim from the Rowing Club’s boat ramp to the town side boardwalk jetty area and back. Some of the other events planned for the day will include the community market 9am-2pm, the Go Adventure Nagambie Stay and Play program, (on land) the Costa Community Canoe challenge 1-2pm and much more. Like the one Hour river cruise, stand up paddle boats, pedal boats, pontoon boats, Go Adventure yabbie races, canoe rides, and at 3-5pm at the Royal Mail Hotel, the Spoken word Story Telling and Poetry competition in the marquee in High Street. HISTORY WANTED FOR MECH HALL AND OP SHOP The Nagambie Mechanics Hall Opportunity Shop started many decades ago and is now the major fundraising body of the Nagambie community’s Mechanics Hall. Now the Op Shop is the beneficiary of the hard work done by many volunteers working bees over many weeks since it closed its doors for major improvements in early December. New President of the Mechanics Hall, Hugh Lawrence, led an eager team of volunteers in the working bees that brought the Op Shop up to scratch and more modern looking. Mr Lawrence said “I am keen and eager to gain information about the volunteers of the Mechanics Hall and the Op Shop. I would like to see an honour board raised in recognition of all those hard working volunteers over the years placed on the wall of the Mechanics hall” He would also like information on the 1873 Mechanics Institute building that will celebrate its 150th anniversary of opening in just under three years time. Mrs De Bono said “The new Committee of Management wants to attract more users of the hall. The hall looks terrific the new work and would be ideal for concerts, shows, movies, weddings, funerals and for other activities.” Mr Lawrence reiterated “Our new committee and volunteers want the Mechanics Hall to be restored to its former glory. A reunion of volunteers from many decades would be a good way to recognise their work and maybe gain important historic information for the Hall’s 150th. If you are interested in the Mechanics Hall to retain this community asset contact Hugh Lawrence 5794 2307 or 0488 770 733. Pictured: Mech hall PRESIDENT Hugh Lawrence in two of the op shop’s rooms before Christmas. Before improvements were carried out over the Christmas period. Now thanks to working bees the shelves and rooms are full and the Op shop is going great guns however volunteer workers still needed.

THE OLD EUROA FLOUR MILL Jared Graham built and operated the mill from 1873. Subsequently it was owned by J Birkett, C Lance, Palmer and Son, Palmer Bros. (who updated the building in 1903) and W McGregor (who purchased it in 1909 and closed it in 1917). Brands of flour produced were “Pride of Victoria” and “White Eagle”. It is important historically as one of Euroa’s early large industries, and notable architecturally for its Romanesque detailing such as the banded brickwork central arch (now painted over) and the Art Nouveau-patterned, rendered bank at the parapet line. NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER AND FASTING The National Day of Prayer and Fasting is held in over 80 locations Australia-wide and is to be celebrated on Saturday, February 27, with combined church gatherings for prayer, repentance, worship, hymns of praise and celebration between 10AM – 4PM, with hundreds of other smaller prayer meetings all around the nation. The theme for 2021 is “Wake up, o sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on You.” If representatives from our district churches and interested locals could attend for an hour or so at the Seymour Salvation Army hall for this ecumenical worship day to show that the district and Seymour churches can be closer and more united together, especially in prayer. The Official Prayer service is from 2pm-3.30pm as part of the Zoom Prayer call in which prayers and input from key national leaders and church leaders. It will highlight gospel songs, and various prayers for a wide section of our government, community and about continuing to pray for the full breaking of the drought; covid 19, for the quenching of the fires, those people affected by them and those people assisting in their recovery. Other prayers for salvation, a rise in numbers at the local churches, prayers for the homeless, sick, mentally ill and many other social issues that relate to Australia may be covered in this National Day of Prayer. Thanks to Co-ordinator Carolyn Mowat and Seymour churches for organising this special day and let’s hope the prayers given on the day may help those who cannot support themselves.

CHANGES TO SPEED LIMIT IN NAGAMBIE’S MAIN STREET The speed limit in Nagambie’s main street will return to 40km/ hr during February, while the marquees in the Go Dine precinct are closed. Strathbogie Shire Mayor, Cr Chris Raeburn, said while the marquees were closed it was safe for traffic to return to the 40km/hr speed limit. However, when tourism and visitor activities again increase in March, and the Go Dine marquees reopen, traffic will again be reduced to 20km/hr along the 600m section of High St. “When the marquees are open, we need to ensure our community and visitors to Nagambie are safe,” Cr Raeburn said. “We’ve worked closed with the Department of Transport to ensure the best possible traffic management plan.

“For Council the safety of our community is paramount.” The three marquees in the centre grassed median strip of High St were initiatives funded through the Victorian Government's Outdoor Eating and Entertainment Package. Council received $250,000, with the direction from government that it could be passed on to hospitality businesses in the form of reducing or waiving permit fees or invested in infrastructure. Currently, the marquees in the Go Dine precinct are looked after by The Royal Mail Hotel and Zephyrz. Go Nagambie Executive Officer Sissy Hoskin said Go Nagambie had supported local hospitality businesses to safely expand their outdoor dining during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Go Dine precinct was established to support local hospitality traders and it’s been great to see locals and visitors enjoying them,” Ms Hoskin said. “During March there are several events in Nagambie that will draw an increase in visitation numbers. These will include the labour day Long Weekend (March 6-8), NOW Festival (March 6) and Go Fish Nagambie (March 26-28). “The Go Dine precinct will re-open to cater for increased visitors to Nagambie and the surrounding region. We will continue to monitor the changing COVID-19 situation with council and use the marquees when required to assist with safe social distancing and open dining measures as directed by the Chief Health Officer.”

AVENEL"GETTING ME TO THE SHOPS" INITIATIVE MAIDEN VOYAGE! Herewith the maiden voyage of the Avenel Active “Getting me to the Shops” initiative today, 4th February 2021. Jim Billings, driver and Coordinator (pictured), reported a 100% satisfaction from the participants. Even those who felt a bit reluctant to divest their autonomy beforehand had a really good experience. Thanks also go to Avenel Active volunteers and the absolutely unbeatable support of Seymour Coaches. Older residents in Avenel can find routine shopping very difficult in our small town. However this group of volunteers are turning the tables and residents found it a most enjoyable social outing.

The Getting Me to the Shops experience will operate every Thursday morning and participants are picked up from and returned to their homes with their shopping which minimises difficulties. There is a modest charge of $10 which helps to cover the very generous subsidised payment to Seymour Coaches. The 12-seater coach is clean, comfortable and will carry a trailer to hold everyone’s shopping! Walking aides are no problem to accommodate either. Those wishing to book a seat may do so to Jim Billing directly on 0433 270101.

BAKING WITH BARB

White Chocolate & Cranberry Cookies Well we are a little shy of Anzac Day, however who is to say it’s not the right time for a scrumptious Anzac-style cookies. When your mates visit for a cuppa or the kids stagger in from school, you will be ready to dazzle them with some home-baked goodies. Some like ‘em chewy, some like like ‘em crisp, I think a touch longer that the recommended 15 minutes in the oven, will satisfy the ‘crispies’. Now I may get on the wrong end of Barb’s rolling pin for putting my two bobs worth in, but I kind of like the idea of substituting the chocy bits for some sultanas, better for the waistline if nothing else. Cheers and happy baking. 200g softened butter 1 cup brown sugar firmly packed

Baking Instructions

1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk

1. 2. 3.

1 egg 1/2 tsp vanilla essence 1/2 cup plain flour 2 cups rolled oats

4.

1 1/4 cups cranberries 1 cup white chocolate bits

Preheat oven to 180 degrees. Line two baking trays with baking paper. Cream butter, brown sugar and condensed milk. Add egg and vanilla essense. Beat until light and fluffy, then add flour, oats, cranberries and choc bits - mix well. Place heaped tablespoons of mixture onto prepared trays, press down with fork.

DIGGING WITH DAVE

What else features in a garden? You will recall last issue that we were lucky enough to get a tour of a working vineyard/farm by Sarah Gough and that the article barely did justice to the extensive set-up Sarah and Viv have created. So not too much ‘digging’ this week, as I would like you to focus on the unusual and very interesting Garden Art. Like the rest of the vineyard, the garden art has been well thought out and placed to give it great effect. You’re first confronted by bushrangers as you come down the drive, in what is a subtle and fun display. All made from recycled farm materials, they lurk among the pine trees and can be hard to spot in their camouflage. They instantly put a smile on your face in anticipation of what other curios you may come across. The resemblance to Ned Kelly and his gang, is undeniable, and not out of character with the area. Believe it or not, Hughes Creek was once a deep and fast flowing waterway, and the Kelly Gang was part of the areas rich history. According to my Google search, Findery.com’s, Kate Andrews posted the following: “In 1866, young Ned Kelly (11

years old) saved even younger Richard Shelton (7 years old) from drowning in Hughes Creek, near the old stone bridge. Richards parents, Esau and Elizabeth, were the owners of Avenel's Royal Mail Hotel. They presented Ned with a silk sash - green on one side and gold on the other - as thanks for his bravery. Ned wore the sash under his famous battle armour at the siege of Glenrowan and it is now in the collection of Benalla Museum (complete with bloodstains).” Let’s hope that a picture of Ned’s ‘treated pine’ gang survives the cutting room floor. Sarah also reckons that a lot of the dogs in the district are named “Ned”, in recognition of the Kelly’s influence in the district? Well, Coffs Harbour has the Big Banana, Queensland the Big Pineapple and Box Grove the Big Banksia! Biggest I’ve ever seen and right up there with the other icons in my book. This is one of Sarah’s favourite pieces and it is impressive for sure. Standing 6ft tall, the well sculptured Banksia stands out in what is a little banksia haven. They do well in the sandy soil and are tough, withstanding our hot, dry heat. When they flower they are

stunning, the taller bush has an apricot flower, with the ground-bush a bright red. Bit of a “Briar Rabbit” hideout as they are quite prickly, however if you don’t intend to dive into them, they are worth the effort. Someone has painted up thepumpshed colourfully, with a watering can one side and a dripping tap the other. I did like the corrugated iron dog, working the sheep, which takes pride of place as the drive divides. Again a lot of fun, I wish I was that clever. Intriguing stuff which adds another layer of interest to the vineyard equation. Now I believe bookings for functions or just casual tastings, are required. I have had a couple of inquiries this week regarding contact details, one was a ‘hens’ afternoon and one a family get-together, a great location for either I would say. I encourage you to look at the Box Grove Vineyard website, which showcases all areas of interest. For those of you off the Net, here are the details: 955 Avenel-Nagambie Road, Tabilk, Vic. 0409210015 will get you Sarah or Viv. Good luck and stay ‘COVID Safe’.

NAGAMBIE PRIMARY SCHOOL

SWIMMING CARNIVAL Last week we held our annual House swimming carnival at the Nagambie Pool. We have a long and proud history of House sport at Nagambie PS. The purpose of the swimming carnival was to enjoy a day of healthy physical activity, have lots of fun, enjoy each other’s company and for Mitchell and Goulburn to compete for the shield. I hope the photos I have

included show we were successful in our goals. Mitchell House had won the shield for past four years, however this time it was Goulburn’s victory. We have 24 excited students now looking forward to District swimming at Euroa.
