“The new facility means improved safety and the ability to offer training for a junior brigade as well as the opportunity to share spaces with other groups in the community. We need to encourage junior members and this will allow us to serve our community better,” said Allen.
“The new station will allow for future growth of the brigade and will improve operational capability, it will be a huge asset to the Nagambie community,” Allen said.

The Nagambie CFA Brigade was established in 1901 and has been housed in the Vine Street location since 1955. In October 2018 the Victorian Government announced the funding to replace the existing station in Vine Street. The new facility will provide a modern base and better facilities, for the volunteer fire fighters who respond to close
Nagambie CFA captain Allen Treble said, “The current station was built in 1955 and is too small to accommodate the brigade and the future needs of the community. The new site will give us room to grow as Nagambie continues to grow.”
The Nagambie Fire Brigade contribution to the project is applaudable with the volunteers raising funds to purchase furniture and items needed to fit out the new station, “We’ve been working towards this for a long time. We help out with traffic management at local events, so we’ve done a lot of work at a local level to get the best station we possibly can,” Allen said.

The total circulation of the Community Voice has steadily increased with the population growth of Nagambie and the distribution to include Avenel. The Community Voice provides information to our community members, promoting and encouraging discussion. We currently deliver 2000 copies each fortnight free of charge and have also added an online publication to further increase our reach and engagement. With this of course comes an increase to costs associated with the production, mail delivery and overall distribution. The decline of the printed newspaper industry is old news. Whatever the indicator we look at – circulation, revenues, number of active contributors, or ad revenues – we are bound to conclude that to safeguard the future of the Community Voice we need to make some changes to our distribution strategies. With our print copies, we are trying to strike a delicate balance: maximising our readership while distributing more efficiently. As a result, mail delivery of the Community Voice will cease immediately as we transition to circulation points, in Nagambie. Readers will be able to collect their own copy of the Community Voice at the circulation points listed below. Avenel deliveries will remain the same with the Avenel Action Group covering delivery costs.

AUSTRALIA DAY WITH GUEST SPEAKERS
There’s plenty happening in the Strathbogie Shire on Australia Day with residents hearing from inspiring, educational and motivational guest speakers at ceremonies throughout the shire on Sunday January 26. The townships of Avenel, Euroa, Longwood, Nagambie, Strathbogie and Violet Town will host the presentations of Australia Day Awards, with a citizenship ceremony taking place in Euroa and Nagambie. The Australia Day Awards acknowledge and celebrate the community service, contributions and achievements of local residents, while new residents will receive their citizenship. In Nagambie, everyone is invited for breakfast starting at 8am. Come along and enjoy a sausage or egg and bacon roll cooked by the Nagambie Lions Club before hearing from one of this year’s Nagambie Australia Day ambassador, Fabian Dattner. Fabian has been synonymous for more than 20 years helping organisations throughout the country
overhaul their leadership capacity including daring expeditions to Antarctica. Revered Australian cartoonist and writer Michael Leunig, whose political commentary spans more than 50 years, will address Avenel residents at this year’s ceremony. He is also a painter, philosopher and poet and describes his approach as regressive, humorous, messy, mystical, primal and vaudevillian. Leunig is no stranger to the region, with the devout nature lover dividing his time between the region and Melbourne. Emily Quattrocchi, who suffered a minor brain injury and was left with a T4 spinal injury following a car accident in 2018, will inspire Euroa residents with her story. Before her accident, Emily is an avid cheerleader and has worked extremely hard to recently
be crowned a Nationals Cheerleading Champion. Emily has made an inspirational documentary called “Emily … you never give up” and films weekly segments for her YouTube channel sharing updates of her life post her accident. Longwood residents will learn of the adventure and exhilaration of being a coxswain for the Port Phillip Sea Pilot when Ivor Guest takes the stage on Australia Day. The powerhouse was at the helm of the iconic orange pilotage boats from 1990 until his retirement in 2015. He is now a familiar face around Longwood, regularly visiting his daughter Shona and riding through the picturesque Strathbogie ranges. In Strathbogie, futurist, strategist and author Dr Peter Ellyard will provide insight into how
communities, companies and individuals can develop successful pathways in the emerging 21st century global society. He chairs Foundation 2050 and is currently the chairman of the Preferred Futures Institute. Violet Town will host one of its own community members Ro Allen, an experienced, passionate and long standing advocate of LGBTIQ Victorians. Ro has a deep understanding of the issues faced in rural and regional areas having been a member of government advisory boards, CEO of UnitingCare Cutting Edge as well as establishing the first rural support group for young LGBTI people. Ro was appointed Victoria’s first Gender and Sexuality Commissioner in 2015.
As a member of the Community Interlink health services consortium, Nagambie HealthCare been named winner of the 2019 Victorian Public Healthcare Awards' : Minister for Disability, Ageing and Carers Award for Excellence in Public Sector Aged Care. In what is believed to be an Australian first, the Community Interlink health services consortium was formed in 2015 to ensure ongoing home care could be provided to those most in need in the communities the consortium services. During a gala presentation at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, GV Health Chief Executive, Matt Sharp received the award on behalf
of the consortium. Matt said receiving the award was wonderful recognition for the outstanding work carried out by the entire consortium. Board Chair Jim Tehan and CEO Bronwyn Beadle noted that our proud of Nagambie HealthCare's achievement and that the award highlights Nagambie HealthCare's commitment to partnering
with others to achieve the best care services for the Nagambie Community.

Most people are not doing too much New Years Day morning, let alone setting off to $QJOHVHD DW DP WR WDNH SDUW LQ RQH RI $XVWUDOLDÂśV ROGHVW ERDW UDFHV Formed in 1911, The Anglesea Recreation & Sports Club are in their 109th continuous year and are still racing the wooden boats commissioned back in 1913. They are lovingly maintained by Club members and get a real work-out on the day. The course covers some 300 metres on the Anglesea Lagoon and requires participants to give their-all, using a single oar each on opposite sides of the boat. It is surf-style rowing, without moving seats or slides, and just about everything you know about river rowing, you can chuck out. Short powerful strokes in quick succession appear to be favoured and holding on, wearing your opposition down, is the key. The field of fifty-odd rowers is a mix of footballers, netballers, triathletes and of course conventional rowers. Melbourne
Clubs feature strongly and the odd Olympian makes a low-key appearance. Nine Nagambie Rowers made the journey this year and teamed up to participate in pair and four racing. Each boat requires a coxswain to steer them and the boats are quite twitchy, so the cox is an essential part of the crews’ success or otherwise. Sadhbh (pronounced ‘sythe’) O’Sullivan and Imogen Cafasso took out the under 18’s Ladies pair. A mistaken entry saw Rick Woodard and Dave Andrews row in the ‘open’ pair, against the young blokes, both being north of 60 years old, and giving away several decades to the younger crews.

Ava Cafasso, daughter of Linda and younger sister to Imogen, did a sterling job of steering all three crews to victory. Ava, who has just turned 13 years old, not only coxed over ten races, but rowed in several as well. THE STORY SO FAR (LA STORIA COSI LONTANA)

From all reports Carmela is travelling very well working at the Top Pub with Zia (Auntie) Emilia and Zio (uncle) Paul. She has slotted in very nicely with staff and customers alike and is extremely happy meeting new people every day. Whilst her main role is in the cucina (kitchen) with Emilia, Kathleen and the team, she is happy to work anywhere she is required including unloading, delivering and shifting stock. She has come a long way since stepping off the plane on December 1 st 2019 where her only English was “hello my name is Carmela from Italy to now being able to make herself be understood and also understand, in part, customers and staff conversations. From an employer’s perspective both Paul and Emilia are extremely pleased with Carmela’s initiative and work ethic. Whilst there is an obvious bias when it comes to family Paul says, “Carmela is an absolute pleasure to train and is extremely quick to pick up on things. In essence whether she is preparing a pizza, cleaning a table or shifting a keg she is at home in her new working environment.
When asked how she is enjoying Nagambie Carmela’s face lights up, and she responds with, “I love the town and the people. Carmela has been very impressed with what she has seen so far including the lake, Kirwans Bridge, Eloura, Mitchelton Wines and the magnificent Goulburn River. Carmela has also enjoyed the drive through the ‘bush’ and cannot believe how vast the countryside is. She enjoyed a recent visit to Swettenham Stud where she was given a guided tour by Kelly and Sarah and is grateful to Jason for organising the tour. Carmela tells us that Zio Paul said, “Prima lavoriamo (first we work) then the fun! Carmela intends to see as much of not only this area but also Australia with the Golding family. As we go to press Carmela is touring the magnificent Great Ocean Road and at the end of the month she is off to meet some more cugini (cousins) and is looking forward to completing the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb. The Community Voice looks forward to following Carmela’s Great Australian Adventure over the next few months.

NLCH INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY BREAKFAST IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER For many years, the Nagambie Lakes Community House has been arranging an International Women’s Day breakfast on the 8th of March. As many of you already know, the 8th of March marks the world wide celebration of women’s social, economic, cultural and political achievement. The day also challenges us to take action for increased equality and equity. This year, the Community House is very proud to announce the speaker will be Strathbogie Shire Mayor Amanda McClaren. But why an International Women’s Day at all? What is its history and why is it still important today? The Community House takes a closer look at the idea, the reason and the potential. The very first International Women’s Day gathering happened back in 1911, although ‘national women’s day’ observations can be traced back even further. It all started in August of 1910, with an agreement between 100 women from 17 different countries, to promote equal rights for women. The following year, over a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland protested and in the Austro/Hungarian Empire alone, there were 300 demonstrations recorded. The women demanded the right to vote and hold public office and an end to employment discrimination. In 1975, the United Nations began celebrating the International Women’s Day. The General Assembly also invited its members to proclaim March 8 as the UN Day for women’s right and world peace. Since then, many yearly commemorations have taken place,
including President Obama proclaiming March 2011 to be Women’s History Month and Australia issuing a 100th IWD anniversary 20-cent coin. The same year the Red Cross challenged all states to not relent their efforts in preventing rape and other forms of sexual violence that harm women in conflict zones. You might think all this is good and well but doesn’t the issue of women’s human right mostly concern developing countries? Does Australia really have anything to learn or change when it comes to this area? “It is a valid question and truth be told, there has been some amazing advancements made the past 100 years, where women’s human rights have expanded with leaps and bounds, Community House coordinator Anna Close says. “The fact that we have already made huge improvements however, shouldn’t really be an excuse for us to accept all that
is still unjust, unfair or blatantly wrong, she continues. According to the Australian Human Rights Commissions, more than one in three Australian women has experienced physical or sexual violence in her lifetime and it is estimated that violence against women and their children cost Australian economy $22 billion in 2015-2016. On average, women spend almost twice as many hours performing unpaid care work compared to men and Australian women are also over-represented in low paid industries and in insecure work and underrepresented in leadership roles, both in the private and public sectors. “If you you want to see true change, it always starts with recognising that there is a problem, Anna conclude. I love that the Community House is willing to take part in the responsibility of both celebrating women’s
accomplishments, but also shine the spotlight on injustice so we can not only be aware, but also work together for change. This year’s breakfast will be held on Friday the 6th of March, at a location in Nagambie, not yet determined. “I would really like to emphasise that BOTH men and women are welcome to the breakfast, Anna concludes. “Human rights is not just the responsibility of men or women, it is something we need to stand and work for together.
Last year's International Women's Day breakfast gathered over 60 people at Le Penelope's.

THE CHANGING OF THE GUARD ST ANDREW'S NAGAMBIE CHURCH CLOSES IT'S DOORS As you would no doubt be aware the Golding’s decided to close their gift and souvenir shop after almost 3 years of trading. In that time they have enjoyed the opportunity to serve the community and its visitors in this unique little shop. Starting out as Coach Stop they changed the name to you. me us about 18 months ago and continued to trade in store and online. The store was a real family affair for most of the time with all of the Golding clan contributing in some way from initial set up to the management of the store. Paul and Emilia are eternally grateful for the effort and travel that Alexandra and Evie did weekly to ensure the store was a premium retail environment.
‘made to order’ products.
Paul and Emilia would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support and they hope that you will continue to support Leesa in her new venture.
Leesa preparing her unique Upcycled Jeans Succulent Morning Planters.
The 1914 - honour board you see was unveiled on 1 December 1916. Over 40 are listed on it.
AVENEL CEMETERY TRUST Originally it was made up of two delegates from each church, Methodist, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic and Church of England. Many delegates have given service to the Trust and none more deserving of thanks than Joyce White who joined in 1986 and retired as Secretary after 33 continuous year’s service. New office bearers are Chairman Les Hemphill, Secretary Margaret Greenaway and
Treasurer Yvonne Sloper. While Les Hemphill and Yvonne Sloper are long time Avenel residents Margaret Greenaway is a relative newcomer having relocated to the area from Gippsland in 2015. She was the former Secretary of the Alberton Cemetery Trust, one of the oldest cemeteries in Victoria. NAGAMBIE SENIOR CITIZENS Seniors are back after the holiday break. All our usual fun activities have or will commence shortly. We are now having a movie afternoon, every 2nd Tuesday at 1pm (see the board at the rooms for movie to be screened – next one is 28th January) Monday Craft Activities 12 pm and Cards at 1 pm.
1870 saw John Cameron inducted as minister for Nagambie and surrounding districts, An intrepid and growing group while waiting for a permanent building to be erected, they met in a woolshed, a private home, under a large gum tree (perhaps praying for rain on those Sundays?) the flour mill and a slab and sapling school house. 1873 saw the first permanent home for Nagambie Presbyterians. A brick church on the church reserve between the new RC church and the Lake. 1899 plans were being made build this church we now know on the corners in Prentice Street and Glass Streets. The Foundations tone was laid on 14 April 1900. Total cost, land, church and Sunday school was 2000 pounds. It was paid off within three years from the first service.
The exciting news is that an ‘eleventh hour’ deal has been reached between Paul and Emilia and Leesa Waters to keep the store trading. For those of you that have visited the store in recent times you will recognise Leesa and her unique Sassy Creations. Leesa is a very talented individual and along with operating the you. me us store she will be creating her unique homewares and gifts on site at 1/346 High Street. Leesa is looking forward to growing her own business with her special
At the recent annual meeting in December 2019 of the Avenel Cemetery Trust, life member Len Underwood, who joined the Trust in 1974, gave a short history of how it was established.
For it was around 150 years ago that new settlers to this district began to serve God as Presbyterians. Petitions were sent to Melbourne asking for a settled minister.
Line Dancing – Every Wednesday at 9.30 and Friday at 1.30 (except 1st of the month). Members Bingo – Every Wednesday at 12.30pm. Bowls will commence again on February 6th at 10am. Evening at the Trots 27th February. Tram Boat Trip March 10th.
There an honour Board for the Second war 11 in the church as well. The first wedding was held on 24 September 1902. Miss Hannah Dickers to Mr William Waite. The last wedding was Miss Cassandra Gauci to Mr Timothy Day on 18 October 2019. One hundred and eighteen years of Sunday worship, funerals, weddings, baptisms, good sermons and long ones; floods and droughts. This old church has seen them all. It was sad to be present for the last planned service in the Nagambie Presbyterian church, on 24 November, but remember a church is not a building, it is the people with a common saviour Jesus Christ meeting together to love and worship Him. My prayer is that those people sheer worship will continue in Nagambie. Christ was dead and buried but rose again on the third day to a magnificent victory. As Winston Churchill said. “Never, never, never give up.” - Bill Day
9TH COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS TEA IN NAGAMBIE - DI GRANT In 2011, I had an idea to conduct a community Christmas tea for those who live alone, who are isolated or are housebound in Nagambie and district. Similar to what Christ Church did in Seymour years ago during Epiphany. I approached the four church groups in Nagambie and the Hub Community House, the Lakeside Larks choir and Lions Club and the idea spread across the town and showed Christmas good will to those who were alone at Christmas time. In 2019, it is the 9th year since the idea took heart and the combined churches and community groups are still spreading their Christmas spirit to those who may not have their family near to them to share this Christmas time. I felt it was important to spread the Christmas spirit and to share the love of Jesus Christ to those in need. It does not have to be elaborate, but it needs to be joyous and not cheap or scrooge minded. The Golf Club looked very festive with its Christmas table decorations and Christmas cheer was expressed by all present on Thursday, 19 December. Over 80 attended the Christmas Community tea and enjoyed
the meal prepared by volunteers and the evergreen Christmas Carols led by Larks Sally Fyfield, Wendy Mason, and Russell Turner on their guitars or keyboard. The visit by Santa was as popular with the oldies as it is when children see him; and all the guests who attended said that they had a great time and looked forward to coming again next year. A small gift of jellied fruit packs and lollies were given to the guests by Santa, and thanks goes to SPC for donating his treat for the folk. Certificates of appreciation were given to the various individuals and groups who support the event each year. Thanks to everyone who made the night a success, such as the folk from the four churches, the Kitchen team of volunteers led by Ronda Richards, The Nagambie Lakeside Larks choir, Nagambie Lakes Community House, Nagambie Golf Club, the Lions Club, Marlene Brew, Nagambie Primary School, Champions IGA supermarket, SPC Shepparton, Santa, Nagambie Healthcare, and individual volunteers; hamper prize donors and those who gave up their time and effort to share some Christmas goodwill with those who live alone or are isolated in our community.

SPORT UPDATES NAGAMBIE MEN'S GOLF A par event was played in gusty conditions with the wind keeping the temperature down and making it quite fresh for the golfers for the time of year. A strong finishing Dave Fullager was the days winner with birdies on 17th and 18th giving him a final score of +1. Runner up after starting the day poorly dropping to -3 early and working it back to a square result was Shaun Spicer, Glen Evans rounded out the top three with a -1 beating Jeff Lodding on count back also -1. Only one nearest the pin prize was achieved with the wind gusts making hitting green difficult that was Alby Seenan on the 13th. The Nagambie golfers have embarked on another pennant season with the 1st round for the Nagambie men being played at Merrigum golf club the team came away with a 2.5 to 2,5 draw against Rushworth which was enough to keep their hopes of a final berth alive. Next week the pennant team will be away at the Tatura Hill Top course taking on Hill Top. A reminder to all Nagambie golfer that the men's competition will continue to be 7.00 to 7,30 hit off for the remainder of January, next weeks golf will be a stroke event with J .Mills on office duty and J .Lodding in the bar

AVENEL BOWLS CLUB Congratulations to Pam Pedder on winning the 2019/20 Ladies Club Championship. Pam now goes on to represent Avenel at the Goulburn Valley Champion of Champions next week. All the very best of luck Pam, Team Avenel are right behind you. (R) Club Champion Pam Pedder (L) Runner Up Kate Donovan.
The C Grade played Mooroopna Blue at the Primary School on a fast outfield which led to an entertaining, high scoring game. Unfortunately Nagambie lost in the last over of the game but remain in sixth position. The highlight of the match was the century by Blair Taylor-Lloyd who spanked the ball to all parts amassing 127 runs. He was ably supported by fellow opener Dale Short with 92 runs of the team score of 4 for 257. Harley Taylor-Lloyd was the best of the trundlers taking 2 wickets from his eight economical overs. The Under 12 team are in seventh position recommencing on Friday January 17 after the Xmas break. The under 14 and 16 teams are both in second place and restart on Saturday January 18. Congratulations to the several Nagambie junior players who represented the Shepparton Association with distinction in the recent Country Week cricket matches. Please check the Nagambie Cricket Club

NAGAMBIE NAGAMBIE BOWLS PETANQUE CLUB CLUB Ladies and Men's Club Champion bowlers were recently decided at Nagambie Bowls Club.
NAGAMBIE CRICKET CLUB The first round of matches after the Christmas break provided no joy for the two senior sides. The A Grade side played Northeners at Tallygaroopna and were defeated by 76 runs. After a quick start by the home team Nagambie managed to restrict the opposition to 9 for 189. Nagambie made a poor start and never recovered to be dismissed for 113. Josh Sanderson top scored with 24, Brayden Biggs claimed three wickets. Nagambie are now in fourth position with four matches remaining.
Division 6E had a bye Next week, Round 10, Division 4 play fourth placed Hill Top at home and Division 6E play cellar dwellers Dookie at Dookie.
WEEKEND PENNANT Division 4 had a successful day on the green in the first game back after the Christmas break with two wins, one draw and one loss, Avenel claimed the valuable ten points for a club win against Merrigum with an overall score of 15/98 to 3/93. Howard Geldard, Geoff Hateley, Jenny Furletti, Noel Slater (s) scored a five on the first end and never looked back, maintaining the lead all day to come away with a solid win 31 – 23. Rob Kemp, Jake Wall, Pam Pedder, David Furletti (s) had a close game with the scores tied five times including the second last end at 25 all. On the last end, Avenel were down at the head, when Ladies Club Champion and Third, Pam Pedder delivered a ripper bowl, drawing to the kitty to cut out Merrigum’s shot bowl to win the game 26 – 25.
Angel Manneken was victorious over Lyn Sinden in the Ladies Championship. Sinden was able to get off to a good start, taking out the first 4 ends. Manneken's first score was on the 5th end and after 10 ends the score was 7 all. Manneken then took control winning 25/17 after 21 ends. Manneken goes onto represent Nagambie on January 22 at Hill Top Bowls Club. William (Billy) Smith a new bowler to Nagambie (previously at Finley Bowls Club) has been a real asset for the club. Smith took on multiple previous champion Greg Brack in front of a good crowd. Smith got off to a flying start being 7/1 after 6 ends, but Brack came back with some brilliant bowling to be 13 all after 16 ends. Both players put a good show on for spectators with Smith dominating in the end to be the victor 25/23 after 30 ends. Smith goes onto represent Nagambie on January 19th at Shepparton Golf Bowls Club. Nagambie would like to wish both players all the best for the finals
Rusty Schwab, Jason Toy, Grace Kenworthy, Brett McDonald (s) went into smoko three up. Then Merrigum came out strongly winning the next seven ends after the break doubling Avenel’s score. But there was fire in the belly as Avenel re-grouped to win five out of the last six ends including a four on the last end to draw the match 21 all. Kate Donovan, Graeme Toy, Graham Lewis, Archie Patterson (s) won twelve ends on the day and were one shot down with one end to be played. However, Merrigum prevailed scoring a three on the last end to win 20 – 24.

Another holiday break has been completed, although we did not officially take a break, there were quite a few days, too hot, too smoky, too windy etc etc. A few dedicated members still managed a game here and there over the period.
